How Can Architects Ditch the 'Starving Artist' Mentality and Design a More Profitable Future? To kick off Season 12 of Practice Disrupted, Evelyn Lee returns from her term as AIA President with a special episode, turning the tables to be interviewed by Tyler Suomala, founder of Growthitect. In this candid conversation, they reflect on Evelyn's year of travel and leadership, discussing the often unseen advocacy work of the AIA and the disconnect between national efforts and local members' perceptions.Evelyn and Tyler examine the core challenges facing the architecture profession, particularly the limitations of the traditional fee-for-service business model. They argue that the industry's "starving artist" mentality and reliance on slim margins are hindering innovation and the ability to offer competitive benefits such as parental leave. The discussion explores practical ways architects can capture more value, from rethinking "pre-design" and "post-occupancy" services to exploring subscription models for long-term building maintenance."You don't build your business first and then your life second. You have to build a business around the life that you want." - Tyler SuomalaBoth leaders emphasize that transformation starts at the individual level. They challenge listeners to stop waiting for permission or industry-wide change and instead take ownership of their careers by raising fees, embracing new skills like sales and marketing, and carving out dedicated time for strategic thinking. Whether you are a firm owner or an emerging professional, this episode offers a roadmap for building a more sustainable, profitable, and human-centric practice.Guest:Tyler Suomala is the founder of Growthitect, where he helps architects and designers master sales, marketing, and business development. After starting his own design studio early in his career and realizing the gaps in his business knowledge, Tyler pivoted to learn these essential skills in other industries. He is now dedicated to bringing those lessons back to the architecture profession, helping firm owners escape the "feast or famine" cycle and build thriving businesses. Is This Episode for You?This episode is for you if:✅ You are frustrated by the "starving artist" narrative in architecture and want to build a more profitable business. ✅ You are curious about alternative business models, such as subscription services or productizing your expertise. ✅ You want to understand the value of national advocacy and professional organizations like the AIA.✅ You are looking for strategies to balance design excellence with business operations and personal well-being. ✅ You are ready to stop waiting for the industry to change and start making moves in your own career today. What have you done to take action lately? What happens when a classically trained chef who cooked at Michelin-starred restaurants decides the future of cooking isn't fire—it's light? Today's guest is Travis Rea, Head of Culinary at Brava, the company that's reimagining home cooking with an oven that uses infrared light instead of traditional heat. But Travis's path to revolutionizing kitchen technology wasn't straightforward. Born and raised in Houston, he grew up watching his mom cook from scratch and fell in love with the transformation of ingredients at just eight years old. That passion led him to ditch a conventional business career for culinary school in San Francisco, where he spent four grueling years cooking at Restaurant Gary Danko—eventually helping the restaurant earn its Michelin star. But after years of vampire hours and relentless pressure, Travis made a bold pivot back to the business world, spending eight years at Williams-Sonoma developing over 800 food products and collaborating with legendary chefs like Thomas Keller. When he first heard about Brava—a startup claiming they could sear a steak in seven minutes using light bulbs—he thought it was "total nonsense." Now, eight years later, Travis has helped build a product that's been used over 13 million times, with a digital library of 9,000+ recipes. This is a story about knowing when to pivot, surrounding yourself with people smarter than you, and why the best career moves often require you to embrace being a beginner all over again. What You'll Learn in This Episode: How failing a class became the wake-up call that changed everything – Why Travis's freshman year failure was "one of the best things that happened" to him and taught him the importance of living up to his own potential The real cost of following your passion – Why Travis walked away from Michelin-starred kitchens after realizing he loved cooking but couldn't sustain the restaurant lifestyle for 30 years How to know when you're ready for a pivot – The signals Travis noticed (and ignored) that revealed he was reading cookbooks while his peers read marketing journals, and what that meant for his career Why working for the best matters more than the biggest paycheck – Travis's philosophy on taking lower-paying jobs at elite organizations early in your career and how it compounds over time The white belt mentality in action – What it's like to be the only "cook" in a house full of physicists and engineers, and why being the least qualified person in the room might be exactly where you need to be Get your free copy of The Career Pivot Playbook: https://www.omaid.me/newsletter

“Brazilian fans are brutal… the training ground is being invaded… any kind of malcontent he will see in N17, he's already been through it all in Santos.” We're joined by South American football expert Tim Vickery as Spurs close in on 19-year-old Santos left-back Joao Souza. Tim explains why fans feel trepidation about South American imports, then makes the case for why this one's different: Souza came through a brutal relegation scrap with training-ground invasions and still stood out because he doesn't hide. We talk rawness vs readiness, how he compares to Udogie, what his game looks like (driving runs, cutting in or going outside, low deliveries), and whether Spurs should throw him in immediately. Plus Brazil's wider issues at full-back and central midfield, and a big Richarlison chat about Ancelotti, and criticism in Brazil. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

In Episode 5 of Allegedly Sports, M|M and Tom Schneider react to a packed weekend across college football, the NFL playoffs, the NBA, and beyond. The conversation blends real time reactions, sharp disagreement, and context driven analysis on what actually matters when the games get tight and expectations rise. The episode opens with a breakdown of the College Football National Championship, where Indiana's dominance sparks a debate about coaching, preparation, fourth down decision making, and why well coached teams consistently separate themselves in high leverage moments. M|M and Tom discuss Fernando Mendoza, quarterback leadership, iconic fourth down plays, and why Indiana's run may signal a longer power shift in college football rather than a one year peak. The focus then shifts to the NFL playoffs, starting with Patriots versus Texans and the evolving perception of Drake Maye. The two break down quarterback expectations, turnover context, and why winning in the NFL often comes down to execution, experience, and avoiding catastrophic mistakes rather than chasing perfection. The conversation continues through the AFC and NFC playoff matchups, including Bills versus Broncos, Bears versus Rams, and Seahawks versus 49ers. M|M and Tom debate fourth down philosophy, coaching tendencies, and why some quarterbacks rise in chaos while others stall when structure breaks down. On the NBA side, the discussion turns to Jimmy Butler's season ending injury and how it reshapes the Warriors' ceiling. The two explore on off switch teams, playoff intensity, and why assuming success can be turned on at will often leads to disappointment. The episode closes with a discussion on Major League Baseball spending, legacy franchises, and whether teams like the Dodgers are buying championships. Drawing comparisons to past Yankees dynasties, M|M and Tom debate whether financial dominance guarantees success or simply raises expectations. Allegedly Sports delivers unfiltered conversation, thoughtful disagreement, and analysis rooted in how sports are actually played and won.

In this episode of the Marathon Mentality Podcast, M|M sits down with DJ for a raw and honest conversation about discipline, personal growth, identity, and what it really takes to build momentum in life. The episode explores DJ's personal journey, from mindset shifts and accountability to learning how to show up consistently when motivation fades. Together, M|M and DJ break down the difference between wanting results and earning them, emphasizing why structure, routines, and self awareness matter more than hype or short term inspiration. The conversation moves into the realities of modern pressure, including social media comparison, unrealistic timelines, and the temptation to cut corners. DJ shares insights on staying grounded, trusting the process, and how embracing discomfort became a turning point in his growth. M|M adds perspective on why most people fail not because of a lack of talent, but because they quit when the process becomes boring or uncomfortable. They also discuss identity, including how people cling to old versions of themselves, why growth can feel isolating, and how redefining who you are is often required before external success shows up. The episode reinforces the Marathon Mentality philosophy that progress is built through daily execution, not dramatic breakthroughs. The episode closes with reflections on consistency, long term vision, and why staying patient while remaining relentless is the real competitive advantage. Topics Covered Discipline vs motivation Building momentum through daily habits Accountability and self awareness Navigating pressure and comparison Identity shifts and personal reinvention Trusting the process when results lag Embracing discomfort as a growth tool Long term thinking vs short term gratification Why consistency beats intensity Key Takeaways Motivation fades and discipline sustains progress Growth often requires letting go of old identities The process works even when it feels slow Most people quit right before momentum compounds
Episode 163 – Missing In The ForestArsenal leave the City Ground with a point, but not without frustration. In this episode of The Non-Negotiables Podcast, the panel break down a goalless draw that felt defined by control, territory, and chances that never quite turned into goals. The conversation begins with Mikel Arteta's selection choices, rotation decisions, and how Arsenal approached a Nottingham Forest side set up to sit deep and limit space. From there, attention turns to the pattern of the game itself — early pressure, sustained dominance, and a growing sense that the first goal was becoming increasingly important.Missed chances become the central theme, with detailed discussion around key moments in both halves, decision-making in the final third, and whether Arsenal's attacking structure is giving the right players the right types of opportunities. The panel also assess individual performances, physical match-ups, and how certain moments shaped the rhythm and confidence of the side.Focus then shifts to the midfield balance, exploring the roles of Rice, Ødegaard, and Zubimendi, and whether Arsenal's current setup is providing enough fluency, control, and threat against low-block opponents. There's also reflection on substitutions, game management, and how fine margins can quietly define results like this.Beyond the Forest match, the episode widens out to the bigger picture — Arsenal's scoring output, historic context around title-winning teams, and what separates very good sides from truly elite ones. Despite the frustration on the night, rival results mean Arsenal extend their advantage at the top of the Premier League, prompting a broader discussion about mentality, pressure, and navigating a title race.Part two features a full Whip Around the Grounds from Matchweek 22, VAR decisions that dominated the weekend, and a look ahead to Arsenal's upcoming Champions League trip to Inter Milan, including selection questions and fitness considerations.Chapters:(00:00) - Arteta's Non-Negotiables Intro(00:51) - Nottingham Forest Setup, Rotation & Selection Debate(02:42) - Missed Chances Theme & Early Frustration(04:17) - Zubimendi Decision-Making & Wasteful Moments(06:11) - Gyökeres vs Murillo & Physical Limits(08:50) - Second-Half Pressure & Rice's Poor Contact Volley(09:54) - Saka Header & Goalkeeper Save(10:37) - Set-Piece Chances & Merino Blocking Gabriel(11:39) - Handball Shout, VAR Frustration & Perspective(13:21) - Arteta Substitutions & Game Management(16:48) - Midfield Balance, System Issues & Tactical Fit(20:30) - Ødegaard Form, Captaincy & Physical Games(25:42) - Rice vs Ødegaard Axis & Structural Questions(28:11) - Eze Debate & Timber at Left-Back(29:18) - Arsenal's Scoring Problem & Historic Context(30:46) - Top-End Talent Debate & Title Ceiling(32:20) - Mentality vs Margins Discussion(37:08) - The Champions Difference & Elite Match Winners(39:34) - Recruitment Philosophy & Building Champions(41:41) - Match Stats, xG & Defensive Control(43:26) - Part Two Intro & Zinchenko Joins Ajax(45:15) - Whip Around the Grounds – Matchweek 22(52:42) - VARse: Manchester Derby, Anfield & North London(01:00:26) - Studio Debate & Weekend Fallout(01:01:01) - Champions League Context & Inter Milan Preview(01:05:29) - Havertz Fitness, Rotation & Forward Options(01:10:50) - Closing Thoughts

The episode opens with a breakdown of the NFL playoff slate, including close games across the board and why public criticism of quarterbacks like Justin Herbert often ignores context. M|M and Tom discuss offensive line injuries, unrealistic fan expectations, and why playoff losses are not always quarterback indictments. The conversation touches on Drake Maye's first playoff appearance, Caleb Williams' growth, Brock Purdy's efficiency, Jalen Hurts criticism in Philadelphia, and why fans often overreact despite recent success. From there, the focus shifts to injury trends and player safety, sparked by George Kittle's Achilles injury and broader concerns around ligament and tendon injuries across the league. M|M and Tom debate field conditions, turf versus grass, stadium standards, and whether the NFL should implement stricter field regulations to reduce catastrophic injuries. They also discuss the physical toll of longer seasons and why availability remains the most important ability. The episode then moves into the NFL coaching carousel, quarterback durability, and the fine line mobile quarterbacks must walk between making plays and preserving their careers. Comparisons range from Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen to Aaron Rodgers, Patrick Mahomes, and Derrick Rose, highlighting how adaptability often separates long term success from unrealized potential. On the NBA side, M|M and Tom break down a Celtics versus Pacers matchup, Jaylen Brown's ongoing tension with officiating, Nike, and league respect, and the reality of illegal screens across the league. They also zoom out to discuss Victor Wembanyama's trajectory, international stars, and whether the NBA's current generation resonates the same way past eras did. The conversation explores star power, changing viewing habits, and why the NBA playoffs still deliver a more compelling product than the regular season. The episode closes with full NFL Divisional Round predictions, including Patriots versus Texans, Bills versus Broncos, Bears versus Rams, and Seahawks versus 49ers, with honest uncertainty, bold picks, and a reminder that playoff football always exposes weaknesses. As always, Allegedly Sports delivers real conversation, thoughtful disagreement, and context driven analysis without manufactured takes. When we start taking action to improve upon ourselves, there's typically some form of criticism that can go along with it. It can be from those closest to us or complete strangers. Regardless, this type of judgment can hurt and cause our ego to feel a sting. In this episode, I've listed five mentalities that we may come across when adjusting our lifestyle for the better. The purpose of this is to recognize them and understand that they have nothing to do with us and are almost always a projection of the insecurities, envy, and conditioning of the other person. Once we can see that, and not take it personally, we become more immune to insults or discouragement. While I'm not an expert on human behavior, I've experienced these mentalities in the past. I think it's also beneficial to be honest with ourselves and assess whether or not we're carrying any of the personality traits that look to destroy rather than encourage.Contact Mike:Mike Sinopoli - NASM Certified Personal Trainer & Nutrition CoachInstagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn: @mfswellness email: mike@mfswellness.comphone: 630-361-4907www.mfswellness.com

In Episode 2 of Allegedly Sports, M|M and Coach Tom Schneider return for another wide-ranging conversation on football, media narratives, athlete accountability, and how sports culture continues to evolve. The episode opens with a deep dive into the NFL MVP race, where M|M makes the case for Drake Maye as the clear frontrunner over Josh Allen and Matthew Stafford. The two break down schedule strength, advanced quarterback metrics, deep-ball efficiency, and why MVP voting often becomes a battle between statistics, narrative, and the eye test. From there, the conversation shifts to the expanded College Football Playoff. M|M and Tom debate whether the 12-team format has improved or diluted the sport, using games like Indiana's shocking win over Alabama and Miami's upset of Ohio State as examples of how parity and coaching have reshaped college football. They also dive into Lane Kiffin's controversial departure from Ole Miss and whether a head coach should be allowed to leave during a playoff run — especially when recruiting and program identity are on the line. Later in the episode, the focus moves to combat sports, with a breakdown of the Jake Paul vs. Anthony Joshua fight. M|M and Tom discuss whether the bout proved the legitimacy of Jake Paul's boxing career or simply exposed the limits of a celebrity fighter when facing a true heavyweight. The conversation then turns serious with a look at Stefon Diggs and the growing tension between off-field controversies and on-field value. M|M and Tom explore how leagues decide when to step in, why stars often receive more leeway, and how public perception, evidence, and PR all shape league responses. The episode closes with a heated but thoughtful discussion about DK Metcalf's suspension after an altercation with a fan. M|M lays out why leaving the bench and engaging with a fan crosses a line, while Tom adds perspective on player conduct, emotional maturity, and why the league has to protect the integrity of the game — even when fans behave poorly. As always, the episode blends real analysis, strong opinions, and honest disagreement — staying true to what Allegedly Sports is all about. Topics Covered NFL MVP race: Drake Maye vs. Josh Allen vs. Matthew Stafford Why MVP is not a lifetime achievement award College Football Playoff expansion and early upsets Indiana's rise and Alabama's collapse Lane Kiffin, Ole Miss, and coaching power in college football Recruiting, program identity, and playoff chaos Jake Paul vs. Anthony Joshua and celebrity boxing Stefon Diggs and how off-field issues affect teams DK Metcalf's suspension and player-fan confrontations Accountability, league discipline, and emotional control
In Episode 3 of Allegedly Sports, M|M and Tom Schneider return to break down one of the most chaotic weeks across both college football and the NFL. From the College Football Playoff semifinals to NFL Wild Card weekend, the conversation blends sharp analysis, strong opinions, and real football perspective. The episode opens with Indiana's continued dominance in the College Football Playoff, including their convincing win over Oregon and what makes them the most complete and well-coached team in the country. M|M and Tom debate quarterback Fernando Mendoza's NFL future, his personality, and whether leadership style actually matters at the next level. The conversation expands into coaching pedigree, with the surprising statistic that nearly every remaining head coach in the playoff tree traces back to Nick Saban's coaching tree. They also dive into one of the most controversial moments of the playoff — the missed pass interference call that helped send Miami to the national championship. M|M and Tom debate officiating, game-deciding calls, and whether refs shy away from making big calls in big moments. From there, the focus shifts to the NFL Wild Card slate, including Carolina's upset potential, Bryce Young's strange career arc, and why momentum late in the season often matters more than regular-season records. They also break down Caleb Williams' evolution in Chicago, Ben Johnson's impact on his development, and why Justin Fields was never the long-term answer for the Bears. The episode closes with a broader look at NFL disappointments and expectations — including the Lions' post-Super Bowl collapse, coaching turnover, Jared Goff's ceiling, and why defense and experience still rule in the playoffs. M|M and Tom finish by making full Wild Card and playoff predictions, including bold picks for Jaguars, Steelers, Eagles, Patriots, and Rams as potential deep-run teams. As always, the conversation stays unfiltered, opinionated, and grounded in how the game is actually played. Topics Covered Indiana vs. Oregon and the College Football Playoff semifinals Fernando Mendoza, QB leadership, and NFL projection Nick Saban's coaching tree dominating the Final Four Miami's controversial win and missed pass interference Refereeing and high-leverage calls NFL Wild Card matchups and betting lines Bryce Young's resurgence and Carolina's momentum Caleb Williams, Ben Johnson, and scheme vs. improvisation Justin Fields vs. elite QB ceilings The Lions' collapse and coordinator departures Jared Goff and Detroit's Super Bowl window Playoff defense, experience, and team identity Full NFL Wild Card and playoff predictions

Your mentality sets the tone for your entire school. In this episode, Chip and Glyn Ann break down why leadership isn't about motivation or hype. It's actually about discipline, ownership, and choosing strength in how you think and speak. A victim mindset spreads fast, kills momentum, and shows up through excuses and complaints. They share how to train your mind like a muscle, guard your words, and lead with clarity instead of emotion. If you want a stronger culture and better leadership, it starts with mentality.
