In this episode of PhotoWork with Sasha Wolf, photographer Mike Brodie talks about his raw, intimate and powerful new book, Failing (Twin Palms). Growing up with a tough home life, Brodie found escape in the punk and BMX scenes before, at just 17, he began hopping freight trains and photographing the drifters and outcasts he met on the rails. Those images became A Period of Juvenile Prosperity (2013), a groundbreaking book that launched his career. After that early success, Brodie walked away from the art world to become a diesel mechanic. Now, age 40, with a son, he reunites with longtime collaborator Paul Schiek ( TBW Books) to publish Failing and reflects with Sasha on his journey, the challenges of early fame, and what it means to return to photography on his own terms. https://www.instagram.com/mikebrodie_thepolaroidkidd https://www.twinpalms.com/products/mike-brodie-failing Mike Brodie's first monograph, A Period of Juvenile Prosperity touched down more than a decade ago, depicting his fellow rail-riders and drifters in a rebellious and wildfire pursuit of adventure and freedom. “Brodie leapt into the life of picture-making as if he was the first to do it,” Danny Lyon wrote about the book in Aperture. Next came Tones of Dirt and Bone, a collection of earlier SX-70 pictures Brodie made when photography first led him to hopping freights, when he was known as “The Polaroid Kidd.” And then Brodie seemed to disappear from the art world as suddenly and mysteriously as he'd first appeared. Maybe his vanishing was another myth. Maybe it was just a necessary retreat. “I was divorcing myself from all that,” he says. “I was growing up. I was pursuing this other life.” In Nashville he became a diesel mechanic. Fell in love. Moved across the country again. Got married. Bought land on the long dusty Winnemucca road Johnny Cash sang about. Started his own business. Built a house. Put down roots. And when that life exploded, the open road called again. Throughout almost all of it, his cameras were with him, and at last those pictures are coming to light.

Today's Headlines: Jimmy Kimmel may be back on ABC's late-night lineup, but viewers in markets like Salt Lake City, Nashville, and New Orleans didn't get the show—thanks to Nexstar and Sinclair, which own nearly 70 ABC affiliates and refused to air it. Meanwhile, the UN General Assembly in Manhattan is serving drama: Trump told NATO to shoot down Russian aircraft, promised Ukraine could reclaim all its lost territory, and in a glitchy, rambling speech claimed he ended seven wars, trashed climate science, and basically asked for a Nobel Prize before bailing on diplomats. He also canceled a budget meeting with Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries. The Secret Service, on the other hand, actually did something: it dismantled a huge illegal telecom network in NYC that had the capacity to send 30 million texts per minute, potentially crashing cell service citywide. Across the pond, the UK is telling people to ignore Trump's Tylenol-autism warnings, with the health secretary quipping he trusts doctors over Trump. Also in court news, Ryan Routh—the man who tried to assassinate Trump on his golf course last year—was found guilty on all charges and tried to stab himself in the neck after the verdict (unsuccessfully). Finally, a hacker broke into Nexar, a dashcam data company, exposing footage of everyday drivers—including one on the way to CIA HQ—and revealing its client list of government agencies buying that data.  Resources/Articles mentioned in this episode: CNBC: Nexstar-owned ABC affiliates won't show Kimmel's return Tuesday, joining Sinclair in preempting program AP News: Live updates: Trump says Ukraine can win back territory lost to Russia PBS: Trump cancels meeting with Schumer and Jeffries on keeping the government open CBS News: U.S. Secret Service disrupts telecom network that threatened NYC during U.N. Chatting today with Kashena Sampson all about music and witchcraft!Nashville artist Kashena Sampson will release her powerful new album, Ghost Of Me, on October 3rd. Born of shadow work and transformation, Ghost Of Me tells a testament of survival, personal discovery, and resilience. Rolling Stone has said her music evokes "the best of Seventies folk," and she has drawn a lot of comparisons to Stevie Nicks. This time, though, she digs deep beneath the surface to explore new territory, summoning her childhood influences (like Mazzy Star, Björk, and the Pixies).Besides being a singer-songwriter, Kashena is a tarot reader and practitioner - she was raised in a non-religious Jewish household with mother who taught her about Kabbalah and herbalism. The family didn't have a television, so Kashena's profound creativity blossomed at a very early age. Always drawn to witchcraft, her very first job was at an occult/esoteric bookstore. Her practice has been instrumental in her success on her sobriety path, and her commitment to shadow work has changed her life. Her songs are spell work, and her music is enchanting. Her album release is a lunar journey: the album and single releases are structured like a ritual under the phases of the moon - a cycle of letting go, calling in, and rising again. What man intends for evil, God intends for good. And so today, I will walk with him?'"— Raechel MyersToday's Episode: Join us as Raechel Myers (cofounder of She Reads Truth) walks us through the story of God and her own story—helping us consider how God is working all things for the good of his people.         More than 8 years ago, Paul Asbury Seaman came to me with an idea for a mix. He would provide the theme and tracklist, and I would man the faders and knobs to create his first guest mix. Of course that first mix was a train-themed set. Now, after 9 railway mixes & many hours traveling on the audio tracks, Paul brings us his tenth train-themed mix. This one is a b it different than the others so I'll let Paul tell you about it: "To celebrate my tenth train mix for Low Light Mixes I'm doing a collection of vocal tracks. There are way too many great train songs to call this set a “Best Of,” thus the qualified title. (I have five CD-length train song mixes for my own use.) These are some of my favorites. And here's several more to start your own playlists, that didn't make the cut only because of time limitations: “People Get Ready” (several good versions), “City of New Orleans” (Arlo Guthrie), “Locomotive Breath” (Jethro Tull), “Long Train Runnin'” (Doobie Brothers), “The Midnight Special” (CCR), “Downtown Lights” (Annie Lennox version) and of course “Hear My Train a Comin'” by Jimi Hendrix (from the Winterland LIVE box set)." Thanks, Paul, for another thoughtful collection of songs. Here's to 10 more excursions on the rails. The Rizzuto Show takes on one of life's hardest questions: Are you riding with "Big Tip"… or not? Yep, we're talking circumcision, people. It's awkward, it's hilarious, and it's exactly the kind of barely informed hot takes you've come to expect from Rizz, Moon, Lern, Rafe, and, King Scott. Yep, somehow we managed to turn a perfectly innocent conversation into a full-blown investigation into whether you're repping "Big Tip" or proudly rocking team "Big Cut." Along the way, we dish out way too many visuals, way too much laughter, and just enough awkwardness to make you question why you ever listen to this show in public. Of course, it's not just all about tips—there's the usual mix of nonsense, hot takes, and wildly inappropriate banter that only The Rizzuto Show can deliver.
