Convention season is now in full swing. Next up - Comic Con Revolution (CCR)! Programming director David Nieves joins us to discuss what goes into putting on a pop culture convention. What were our first convention experiences? San Diego Comic Con was first for some, while others were relegated to a single banquet room at the local Sheraton Hotel (looking at you Richard). If you ever dreamed of working at a con, David gives tips on how you can make that happen.    David tells us about a NEW feature for this year's CCR. Attendees will have an opportunity to experience a special pop up with Trapped Escape Room. In The Henchmen's Heist, you and your crew are aspiring villains! You join Madame Graffiti's band of art thieves. The mission? To steal as many pieces of art as possible from the world-famous Lumina Museum at their annual Spectrum Gala.    Along with the many superstars and escape room, we will also be there with TWO of our Trivia party game shows. Sunday May 18th we will host our Pop Culture Trivia Challenge at 12pm. At 2:45 we will play our Star Wars Trivia Challenge Strikes Back!   Today in Star Wars History 5/2/2006   Revenge of the Sith wins top honors in two categories at the 32nd Saturn Awards. Based on Finn's short film Laura Hasn't Slept (2020), the film stars Sosie Bacon as a therapist who witnesses the bizarre suicide of a patient, then goes through increasingly disturbing and daunting experiences that lead her to believe she is experiencing something supernatural. It also features Jessie T. Usher, Kyle Gallner, Kal Penn, and Rob Morgan, as well as Caitlin Stasey reprising her role from Laura Hasn't Slept. A feature adaptation of Finn's short was announced in June 2020, and the cast was added in October 2021. Principal photography began that month in New Jersey and ended in November. Originally set for release on the streaming service Paramount+, distributor Paramount Pictures opted to release the film theatrically after positive test screenings. Smile premiered at Fantastic Fest on September 22, 2022, and was released in the United States on September 30. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and grossed over $217 million worldwide on a budget of $17 million. A sequel, Smile 2, is scheduled to be released in October 2024. The Ring is a 2002 American supernatural horror film directed by Gore Verbinski and written by Ehren Kruger. Starring Naomi Watts, Martin Henderson, David Dorfman, and Brian Cox, the film focuses on Rachel Keller (Watts), a journalist who discovers a cursed videotape that causes its viewers to die seven days later. It is a remake of Hideo Nakata's 1998 film Ring, based on the 1991 novel by Koji Suzuki. The Ring was theatrically released in the United States on October 18, 2002, by DreamWorks Pictures. It was a box-office success, grossing $249.3 million worldwide on a $48 million budget, making it one of the highest-grossing horror remakes of all time. The Ring received mixed-to-positive reviews, with critics in particular praising the atmosphere and visuals, Bojan Bazelli's cinematography, Verbinski's direction and the performances of the cast (particularly Watts). At the 29th Saturn Awards, the film won in two categories: Best Horror Film and Best Actress (for Watts). The film is the first installment of the American Ring series, and is followed by The Ring Two (2005) and Rings (2017). The success of The Ring inspired American remakes of several other Asian and Japanese horror films, including The Grudge (2004) and Dark Water (2005). Plot Teenage girls Katie and Becca discuss an urban legend about a cursed videotape that causes whoever views it to die in one week. That night, Katie, who viewed it one week ago, is killed by an unseen force. At Katie's funeral, her mother asks her sister Rachel, a Seattle-based journalist, to investigate her daughter's death. Rachel discovers that Katie's friends all died in bizarre accidents at the same time as Katie's death. Rachel visits the Shelter Mountain Inn, where Katie and her friends saw the tape. She finds and views the tape; it contains strange and frightening imagery. She then receives a phone call from an unknown caller who whispers, "Seven days". Though initially skeptical, Rachel quickly begins to experience supernatural occurrences linked to the tape.

Bekx hails from the Heart of the South-Atlanta, Georgia. A city teeming with talent and a remarkably diverse musical industry. And even though she moved to Catalina Island off the coast of Southern California at an early age, Atlanta had already left its mark on her life to come. As a child, she was drawn to the stage. First with impromptu, but very choreographed performances, as famous choreographers from LA would travel to Catalina, the Island of Romance, and work with developing the children there. Then, by her early teens, she found herself in front of audiences in more prominent settings, like the Wilshire Ebell Theater in LA, as well as the famous Casino Theater on Catalina Island. Now, Bekx has launched her career into the music industry as she draws off her childhood years spent camping, surfing, horseback riding, hunting and fishing, as well as her years of vocal training, performances, competitions and so much time just doing what she loves–singing. She has grown as a performer, as an artist and as a person–she has dedicated her life to chasing her musical dreams and is excited to share her story and her talents with anyone who will listen. Now, she is eager to introduce youto Bekx. The journey hasn't been easy. Bekx has had her share of growing pains, life lessons and difficult or deals along the way. But no matter what has happened, she has always overcome and has used those experiences to mold a fresh new outlook on life. As a songwriter and performer, she summons both the good times and the challenging as she seeks to breathe life into her music and invite others to feel the emotions behind her powerful vocals.Bekx has come a long way since Atlanta first left its mark. She has lived in multiple cities from coast to coast and met many diverse and influential people. In early 2019, the journey led her to Nashville, where she plans to leave her mark on listeners and labels alike. Already in her short time in Music City, she has been in the studio with Grammy-winning country artist Rebecca Lynn Howard and rising hip-hop star JC. She has worked alongside veteran artist & producer, Lincoln “Barnone” Morris. She released her first single, “Scissors”, in June 2019, and confidently celebrated its rise to #51 on the Music Row charts. She followed that release with an original and exciting Christmas song, “I Still Believe”, as well as her firstEP,Rabbit Hole. Recently, she has completed a radio tour across the southeast, made an appearance on the Red Carpet in LA at the Saturn Awards, and has performed twice at the music festival SXSW in Austin,TX. Bekx has been in the studio for the last three years, churning out the lyrics and vocals for all of her current and upcoming original releases. Now, she is working on her second studio EP and cannot wait to share her more of her compelling lyrics and formidable sound. featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 2621: RoboCop Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 8 July 2024 is RoboCop.RoboCop is a 1987 American science fiction action film directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner. The film stars Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Daniel O'Herlihy, Ronny Cox, Kurtwood Smith, and Miguel Ferrer. Set in a crime-ridden Detroit in the near future, RoboCop centers on police officer Alex Murphy (Weller) who is murdered by a gang of criminals and revived by the megacorporation Omni Consumer Products as the cyborg law enforcer RoboCop. Unaware of his former life, RoboCop executes a campaign against crime while coming to terms with the lingering fragments of his humanity. The film was conceived by Neumeier while working on the set of Blade Runner (1982), and he developed the idea with Miner. Their script was purchased in early 1985 by producer Jon Davison on behalf of Orion Pictures. Finding a director proved difficult; Verhoeven dismissed the script twice because he did not understand its satirical content, until he was convinced of its value by his wife. Filming took place between August and October 1986, mainly in Dallas, Texas. Rob Bottin led the special-effects team in creating practical effects, violent gore and the RoboCop costume.Verhoeven emphasized violence throughout the film, making it so outlandish that it became comical. Censorship boards believed that it was too extreme, however, and several scenes were shortened or modified to receive an acceptable theatrical rating. RoboCop was a financial success upon its release in July 1987, earning $53.4 million. Reviewers praised it as a clever action film with deeper philosophical messages and satire, but were conflicted about its extreme violence. The film was nominated for several awards, and won an Academy Award and a number of Saturn Awards.RoboCop has been critically reevaluated since its release, and it has been hailed as one of the best films of the 1980s and one of the greatest science fiction and action films ever made. The film has been praised for its depiction of a robot affected by the loss of humanity, in contrast to the stoic and emotionless robotic characters of that era. RoboCop has continued to be analyzed for its themes such as the nature of humanity, personal identity, corporate greed and corruption, and is seen as a rebuke of the era's Reaganomics policies. Its success created a franchise: the sequels RoboCop 2 (1990) and RoboCop 3 (1993), children's animated series, live-action television shows, video games, comic books, toys, clothing and other merchandise. A remake was released in 2014.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:28 UTC on Monday, 8 July 2024.For the full current version of the article, see RoboCop on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Russell.

PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Ted Geoghegan (WE ARE STILL HERE, MOHAWK) returns to discuss his latest feature, the Saturn Award nominated BROOKLYN 45 with Adam, Joe, and Arwen. From trying something completely different on the heels of his successful 2015 horror film WE ARE STILL HERE with his 2017 historical action drama MOHAWK… to the pride he takes in hearing from an indigenous elderly Mohawk man that his film was “the first time he ever saw a film in his native language”… to making his triumphant return to the horror genre with BROOKLYN 45 and working closely with his father (a US Air Force veteran) on the screenplay's authenticity… to the benefits of shooting a contained story on a built set with fly away walls… to the incredible reception BROOKLYN 45 received after it's world premiere at the South By South West film festival (it is currently available on SHUDDER and available to rent digital)… Ted returns 300 episodes later with a seasoned perspective and lots of great new stories! Also, Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” to a listener who is growing tired of gratuitous cursing in so many modern TV series and films, Joe's SUITABLE FLESH premieres on SHUDDER, and Adam announces 3 more conventions scheduled for March and April in his ever growing list of 2024 appearances.

Suzume (Japanese: すずめの戸締まり, Hepburn: Suzume no Tojimari, lit. 'Suzume's Locking Up') is a 2022 Japanese animated coming-of-age fantasy adventure film written and directed by Makoto Shinkai, produced by CoMix Wave Films, and distributed by Toho. The film follows 17-year-old high school girl Suzume Iwato and young stranger Souta Munakata, who team up to prevent a series of disasters across Japan by sealing doors from the colossal, supernatural worm that causes earthquakes after being released. The film features the voices of Nanoka Hara and Hokuto Matsumura, with the character designs by Masayoshi Tanaka, animation direction by Kenichi Tsuchiya, art direction by Takumi Tanji, and music by Radwimps and Kazuma Jinnouchi, making it Shinkai's third collaboration with Radwimps and Tanaka, after Your Name (2016) and Weathering with You (2019). It began production in early 2020, eventually being announced as completed by October 2022. A novel adaptation, also written by Shinkai, and a manga series illustrated by Denki Amashima both debuted prior to the film's release. It was inspired by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. Suzume first premiered in IMAX in Japan on November 7, 2022, and was theatrically released nationwide on November 11. It received positive reviews from critics, with praise for its animation, characters, emotional weight and music, although the film's plot was criticized by some for being structurally similar to Shinkai's previous works. It has grossed over $323 million worldwide, becoming the fourth highest-grossing film of 2022 in Japan and the fourth highest-grossing Japanese film of all time. The film received multiple nominations, including at the Golden Globe Awards and Saturn Awards.
