The TV show Severance debuted on Apple TV+ in February 2022. It was created by writer Dan Erickson, and developed into a series by director and executive producer Ben Stiller. He directed the pilot and most of the episodes. After the first season came out, Severance was nominated for 14 Emmys, including Outstanding Drama Series, and it won two Emmys: for Main Title Design and for Musical Composition. I love this show, and the main title sequence is incredible. I was so excited to get to talk to the composer, Theodore Shapiro, about how he made the main title theme music. In this episode, you'll hear how that theme first came into existence in a totally different form, and then, how Teddy re-imagined it to become the final version. Take funny music seriously! Though often dismissed as silly or derivative, funny music, Lily E. Hirsch argues, is incredibly creative and dynamic, serving multiple aims from the celebratory to the rebellious, the entertaining to the mentally uplifting. Music can be a rich site for humor, with so many opportunities that are ripe for a comedic left turn. Taking Funny Music Seriously (Indiana UP, 2024) includes original interviews with some of the best musical humorists, such as Tom Lehrer, "the J. D. Salinger of musical satire"; Peter Schickele, who performed as the invented composer P. D. Q. Bach, the supposed lost son of the great J. S. Bach; Kate Micucci and Riki Lindhome of the funny music duo Garfunkel and Oates; comedic film composer Theodore Shapiro; Too Slim of the country group Riders in the Sky; and musical comedian Jessica McKenna, from the podcast Off Book, part of a long line of "funny girls." With their help, Taking Funny Music Seriously examines comedy from a variety of genres and musical contexts--from bad singing to rap, classical music to country, Broadway music to film music, and even love songs and songs about death. In its coverage of comedic musical media, Taking Funny Music Seriously is an accessible and lively look at funny music. It offers us a chance to appreciate more fully the joke in music and the benefits of getting that joke--especially in times of crisis--including comfort, catharsis, and connection. Lily E. Hirsch is a musicologist and author most recently of Can't Stop the Grrrls: Confronting Sexist Labels in Music from Ariana Grande to Yoko Ono; Weird Al: Seriously; and Insulting Music: A Lexicon of Insult in Music. Every time you find yourselves here, Settlers, it's because you chose to come back. The boys share their theories for what the "work" actually is, draft their top Lumon employees, and continue their anti-temp crusade.
When it comes to biting satire and outrageous humour, Tropic Thunder remains a standout in the annals of Hollywood comedies. Released in 2008, this film, directed by Ben Stiller, is a unique blend of action, absurdity, and razor-sharp commentary on the entertainment industry itself. In this Tropic Thunder Movie Review, we dive deep into the film's multilayered humour, its over-the-top performances, and the controversies that have kept it relevant long after its initial release.Plot Breakdown and SetupTropic Thunder follows the chaotic production of a Vietnam War film that spirals out of control when its pampered, clueless actors are dropped into the jungle for some “method” filmmaking. What starts as a fictional movie quickly devolves into real-life danger, though the cast has no idea they are no longer pretending. The plot is as meta as it gets—a movie about making a movie, where the line between fiction and reality is hilariously blurred.Ben Stiller plays Tugg Speedman, a fading action star desperately seeking credibility by taking on a “serious” role in a war drama. His co-stars include Kirk Lazarus (played by Robert Downey Jr.), a multiple Oscar-winning actor who undergoes a controversial pigment alteration surgery to play a Black soldier, and Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black), a drug-addicted comedian known for his gross-out humour. Alongside them are Kevin Sandusky (Jay Baruchel), the earnest newbie, and Alpa Chino (Brandon T. Jackson), a rapper-turned-actor trying to maintain his street cred. As the film's director loses control, the actors must survive real threats in the jungle, thinking it's all part of the shoot.A Satirical Punch to Hollywood's EgoAt its core, Tropic Thunder is an unflinching satire of Hollywood excess, egotism, and the absurd lengths actors go to in search of acclaim. The film skewers method acting, self-important stars, and the exploitative nature of the movie business. Ben Stiller, who not only stars but directs, doesn't shy away from poking fun at the very industry that made him famous.Stiller's Tugg Speedman embodies the desperation of actors clinging to their fading stardom. His previous attempts to earn respect as a serious actor—most notably in the disastrous Simple Jack, where he plays a mentally disabled man—are a clear jab at how Hollywood sometimes exploits sensitive topics for awards. The film pulls no punches in exposing the cynical calculation behind some “prestige” performances.Robert Downey Jr.'s portrayal of Kirk Lazarus, a method actor who famously “doesn't break character until the DVD commentary,” takes method acting to absurd extremes. The decision for Lazarus to undergo a skin pigmentation procedure to play a Black character is undeniably provocative, pushing the boundaries of satire in ways that sparked debate even upon the film's release. The character is a vehicle for Tropic Thunder to critique the pretentiousness of actors who go to unhealthy or inappropriate lengths to inhabit their roles—without excusing the controversial nature of Lazarus's arc.Meanwhile, Jack Black's Jeff Portnoy represents a different Hollywood trope: the comedic actor known for lowbrow, bodily-function-driven humour who secretly longs for artistic respect. Black leans into this portrayal with reckless abandon, turning Portnoy into a parody of a certain kind of comedian trapped by his own public persona. The Performances: A Career High for Downey Jr.Though the entire cast delivers hilarious performances, Robert Downey Jr. steals the show with his portrayal of Kirk Lazarus. His commitment to the role is complete, both playing up the absurdity of Lazarus's method acting and delivering an authentic, sharp commentary on Hollywood's more troubling habits. Downey Jr.'s performance walks a very fine line—one that could have easily veered into offensive territory. However, by using the character to critique the very behaviour he is embodying, the role becomes an effective, albeit a controversial, form of satire. His role earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, cementing it as one of the most memorable comedic performances of the 2000s.Ben Stiller's turn as the washed-up action star is also noteworthy, mainly because his character serves as the audience's guide through the absurdity of the film's events. Stiller's deadpan delivery and earnest attempts at drama make Tugg Speedman's cluelessness all the more entertaining.Jack Black, as Jeff Portnoy, veers into more chaotic, physical comedy, adding a layer of absurd humour to the group's dynamic. His struggles with drug addiction while lost in the jungle add a layer of vulnerability to the otherwise outlandish character.Controversy and Cultural ImpactTropic Thunder courted its fair share of controversy upon release, particularly for its portrayal of Kirk Lazarus and its use of blackface as a satirical device. Robert Downey Jr. defended the role as an exploration of actors' ethical boundaries, and the film itself uses Lazarus's storyline to highlight the ridiculous lengths some performers will go for their craft. Still, the role continues to prompt discussions on what constitutes effective satire versus offensive content.Additionally, the film's subplot involving Tugg Speedman's role in Simple Jack—a blatant parody of Hollywood's handling of disability—also generated pushback from advocacy groups. These controversies, however, are key to understanding the film's legacy. Tropic Thunder was always intended to provoke, challenge, and make audiences uncomfortable as they laugh.Despite (or perhaps because of) these controversies, Tropic Thunder remains a touchstone in discussions about satire, comedy, and filmmakers' responsibilities when dealing with sensitive topics. Its willingness to push boundaries and make audiences question the ethics of the film industry itself is part of what keeps it relevant more than 15 years later.Cinematic Elements: More than Just ComedyOn the technical side, Tropic Thunder is surprisingly well-made for what is primarily a comedy. John Toll's cinematography brings an epic, blockbuster feel to the film, particularly in the action sequences that are staged with the same level of intensity as a serious war movie. Theodore Shapiro's score also works in tandem with the action, providing a dramatic undertone that heightens the film's satirical edge. The jungle setting, explosive battles, and grandiose direction all emphasise how over-the-top Hollywood productions can become, underscoring the film's satire. While Tropic Thunder could have quickly been shot with a straightforward, low-budget comedy aesthetic, the decision to treat it like an actual war film makes the story's absurdity all the more pronounced.Legacy: A Satirical Time CapsuleIn many ways, Tropic Thunder serves as a time capsule of mid-2000s Hollywood. It captured a specific moment in the film industry when method acting, prestige pictures, and action blockbusters dominated the cultural conversation. The film remains controversial, but it's also widely regarded as one of the best satirical comedies of its time. Whether it skewers egotistical actors, lampoons Hollywood's excesses, or simply delivers absurd, laugh-out-loud moments, Tropic Thunder stands as a film that invites laughter and introspection in equal measure. As we explore Tropic Thunder's genius and provocations in this podcast episode, we ask: Does it still hold up? Is it a biting satire of Hollywood or an offens...

On this episode, I'm gushing about Severance, a horror science fiction psychological thriller television series from Apple TV that debuted last year. This show is a peak at a world in which our work life is completely severed from our home life through the severance program created by a very ominous company called Lumon Industries. We are introduced to the Macrodata Refinement team and also to the newest coworker who wants to escape this weird, creepy cubicle hell. She sounds like me on a daily basis. It's a short spoiler free shoutout to a show i'm late to the party about it but glad I finally arrived! For the title, Severance, the artist is Theodore Shapiro.

Spoiler Warning: Skip 29:22 - 30:48 to avoid some Severance spoilers. There is an audible warning before spoilers within the interview as well. Theodore Shapiro's versatility as a storyteller spans across genres from slapstick screwball comedies like Dodgeball all the way to nuanced character dramas like The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty. Recently he re-teamed with director Ben Stiller for the acclaimed Severance on Apple TV+. The series is a wonderfully executed thriller that blends science fiction in a grounded modern reality with plenty of social commentary on top of well-developed characters and storytelling. Theodore shares a bit about his path to becoming a composer including taking us into his general approach. We discuss the great traits he loves in his regular collaborators like Paul Feig and Ben Stiller, and why he loves working with them. Theodore tells the story of how he first met Ben Stiller, which led him to scoring Dodgeball and eventually working with Ben when he was in the director's chair on Tropic Thunder. We look back at projects like Tropic Thunder, Zoolander 2, and do a bit of a dive into Severance. For Severance, we examine the approach Theodore took musically including how that intense season 1 finale was crafted, developing character arcs, working on the source music in the show, how the extraordinary main title sequence came together, favorite moments, and much more! A Film.Music.Media Interview | Produced & Presented by Kaya Savas
Theodore Shapiro is one of the emerging superstars of film and television composing, with a background in comedies and recent breakout hits such as Apple TV+'s SEVERANCE, directed by Ben Stiller. Teddy talks about getting started on another breakout hit YELLOWJACKETS before handing off the series to his friends Craig Wedren and Anna Waronker. Then, we dive into the intensely cinematic, deeply intimate and isolated music for SEVERANCE. Plus, how Teddy and Ben Stiller found their groove during pandemic lockdowns. #ProcessingSeverance host Rasha Goel talks to Theodore Shapiro, composer of the new #AppleTVPlus series #Severance. Process the show alongside our Hollywood Critics Association experts and share your feedback! More about Severance, Season 1: Cast: Adam Scott as Mark, Britt Lower as Helly, John Turturro as Irving, Christopher Walken as Burt, Patricia Arquette as Harmony Cobel / Mrs. Selvig, Jen Tullock as Devon, Zach Cherry as Dylan, Tramell Tillman as Milchick, Yul Vazquez as Petey, Dichen Lachman as Ms. Casey. Showrunner: Ben Stiller.
In a world where so many people have learned to start working from home the last couple of years(and many still do), the phrase "don't take your work home with you" has become ever more dubious. But what if you could really leave it all at the office -- not just your work, but your memories of doing that work? That's the eerie premise of Apple TV+'s latest series, Severance, a Ben Stiller-directed corporate satire that imagines a company that allows its employees to undergo an experimental procedure to cleave their memories in twain. One of you, the "Innie," only remembers the time you spent in the office; the other, the "Outie," gets to live their off-work hours blissfully unaware of the stressors or responsibilities of the job. It sounds nice in practice, but for the Innies who actually work for the Lumon Corporation, it's a special kind of existentialist hell, where all they know are the four white, antiseptic walls of their office. And it's a place that Mark (Adam Scott) and the other three members of his department will have to navigate, as they work to figure out what their real lives are like and discern what they're actually doing for Lumon. Severance is easily one of the best shows of the year thus far, flitting effortlessly in tone between horror and workplace comedy and haunting character drama thanks to Stiller's stylish, unpredictable direction. Aiding the feeling of banal claustrophobia the show engenders is the score by Emmy-nominated composer Theodore Shapiro, who's scored just about every comedy you ever loved in the 2000s (13 Going on 30, Dodgeball, Jennifer's Body). But his versatility really shines through in his work with Stiller, especially here, where the existential emptiness of Lumon, and the Innies' lives in it, is personified by ominous descending piano melodies and mind-mending instrumental distortions. I was lucky enough to sit down with Teddy to talk about Severance, the challenges of TV scoring, stepping out of the comedy wheelhouse, and finding the right, restrained sound for such a complicated show. You can find Ted Shapiro at his official website here. Severance is currently streaming on Apple TV+. You can also listen to the score for Severance on your preferred music streaming service courtesy of Endeavor Content. qcLMwdMXGXnrdWZvMjqB

Theodore Shapiro was born Washington, DC and is a composer who has delivered memorable music for some of the funniest movies of the past 10 years from the upbeat, jazzy sounds of THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA to the jungle-adventure send-up of TROPIC THUNDER and the sentiment of last MARLEY & ME. He has scored a long list of amazing movies covering the spectrum from his work on the 2003 hit Old School, to the 2019 motion picture 'Bombshell'. He has created the music for other amazing films such as 'Destroyer' directed by our past guest Karyn Kusama, 'Last Christmas', and 'The Devil Wears Prada'. And we can't skip mentioning his amazing work on the HBO T.V. show "Game Change" for which he was nominated for an Emmy! His careful touch has made him a sought-after collaborator for some of Hollywood’s leading directors. Shapiro is a classically trained composer with a bachelor’s degree from Brown and master’s from Juilliard who, despite commissions for classical works, decided he’d rather be working in film. “ "Ask yourself the question, are you being kind to yourself, and take up that struggle to do it as much as you can." - Teddy Shapiro Topics we discuss: Asking young people "what are they listening to" Taking the leap to Movies Difficulty of making the decision Turning down a huge Opera opportunity Being better His view that his work isn't good enough Using the next project to get better Being a composer for Comedy Films His aspirations What Creation is to him His process The instillation of confidence and belief His dad The people he collaborates with Early childhood musical influence What support looked like for him Managing Family with Success Impact of having Children References: Theodore-Shapiro.com Iconoclasm John Adams and Thomas Ades (composers) John Williams Daily Chronicle Credits: Lead editor + Producer: Ruf Holmes Music: Main Theme: "Eaze Does It" by Shye Eaze and DJ Rufbeats, a More In Common Podcast Exclusive. Then, Kenny asks Robert to share how his best buddy Bruce Willis helped turn Hudson Hawk into a reality in the latest installment of "Score Stories." Later, Theodore Shapiro joins the show to share his many tales of scoring some of the greatest comedies of the last two decades including Old School, Dodgeball, I Love You, Man, Tropic Thunder. Teddy also details his grueling, yet rewarding experience working with actor/director Ben Stiller, why he's always battling being pigeon-holed as the comedy composer and his process of trying to get editors original music before temp score is put into a film. "Maybe you're a penguin, Tim, but Julie's not a penguin. She's a lioness. Don't try to mate a lioness with a penguin. Ever.” Aside from a few dips onto other genres, Jay Roach generally sticks with comedies, and seems to fare well when he's doing big, broad ones. Take the Austin Power films, or perhaps Meet the Fockers. With such a strong curriculum vitae in comedy films, having him direct a remake of Francis Veber's Le Dîner de Cons looks great on paper. But when it comes time to write, make, and release the movie, does it hold up as well? Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we wrap up our Francis Veber and His Remakes series with the remake of his 1998 film Le Dîner de Cons with Roach's 2010 film Dinner for Schmucks. We talk about the general vibe that this remake feels so American, and what that means to the farce in the translation. We look at the construction of the characters and why we preferred them in the original. We chat about comedy beats that worked really well for us and gave us a sense of the Roach we were wanting. We discuss the nature of Veber's films and why they seem so translatable. We talk about the actors, notably Paul Rudd and Steve Carell, but also Bruce Greenwood, Octavia Spencer, Stéphanie Szostak, Zach Galifianakis, Jemaine Clement, Lucy Punch, and more. We touch on Theodore Shapiro's always great comedy score. And we touch on the title and how it compares to the original. It's an interesting concept for a film that doesn't hold up to the original, but it still allows for a great conversation. So check it out then tune in! On today's new episode of THE FLAGSHIP SHOW on CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO, I begin a four-part series dedicated to my favourite scores from the past ten years. On part one I’ll be talking about and playing music from my number 20 – 16 favourite scores of the past decade. You'll be hearing music from such composers as Andy Hull, Robert McDowell, Marco Beltrami, James Newton Howard, Christopher Willis, Theodore Shapiro and Jonny Greenwood. Selecting the scores for these shows was an interesting exercise. I had to go back through all my best-of lists since 2010, listen to all the top 5 scores from those years and then pick my 20 favourites. Putting them in order was the toughest part because, in all honesty, I love all of these scores featured in these shows. I was actually contemplating presenting them alphabetically to make it easier for me, but that would be cheating and wouldn’t be as interesting or as fun! Again, these are my favourites. No doubt you are going to have a much different list. If you do, please share it with me on Twitter, Facebook or on cinematicsound.net. I’d love to read what you liked over the past ten years! Welcome to the premiere episode of FILMIC WITH LEY BRICKNELL on CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO. —— Note from Erik Woods: I have been a fan of Ley’s show for years. I first discovered her eclectic program when it was on the RadioNowhere network where it debuted back in 2009. Her month show brought me much joy and I discovered a lot of music I had never heard before AND I even stole a few ideas from her show for myself. For instance, when I was on WROCK Radio I presented a segment called the “John Williams Score of the Week.” Well, that was completely ripped off from Ley’s monthly John Barry segment on her show. Sadly in 2017, RadioNowhere shut down and FILMIC didn’t have a home. Fortunately, Ley began broadcasting her shows on Mixcloud. Back in the fall of 2019, I was losing Brandon Shea-Mutala’s excellent BREAKING THE WAVES program and I immediately put out the call to Ley to see if she was interested in joining CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO to fill the spot. Ley was struggling to find an audience on Mixcloud so I thought her jumping over to CSR was the best way for her to find that audience. I’ve even had the pleasure meet Ley face to face back in the summer of 2016 when she vacationing in Ontario. We went out for a wonderful lunch at a local brewing here in Kitchener-Waterloo. We would have talked forever if we were allowed to, unfortunately, we could only spend and hour chatting about… well… film music of course. Ley is a charming, sweet. funny, friendly, warm human being and I hope I have the honour of meeting her again sometime soon. So, please give a warm CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO welcome to Ley Bricknell and her brilliant show FILMIC. Say hi to Ley in the comments below or send her an email to let her know how much you love her show. I’m sure she would appreciate it! —— On FILMIC's premiere episode here on CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO, which is actually FILMIC’s 71st broadcast, Ley presents some late 2019 releases, new releases, a classic vintage soundtrack from 1947 and a tribute to Kirk Douglas. Composers include John Powell, Ennio Morricone, Brain Easedale and Theodore Shapiro with music from such films as CALL OF THE WILD, MY NAME IS NOBODY, BLACK NARCISSUS, SPIES IN DISGUISE and much, much more. Enjoy! —— ABOUT LEY BRICKNELL A miss-spent youth can be applied to Filmic presenter Ley Bricknell, she missed the Rolling Stones, a lot of classic TV and the phenomena that was Discotheque due to inhaling movies as often as she could. Black & White, Technicolour, world and indie – she watched them all. It became the scores which made the most impression. Whilst friends were boogying on down to the latest chart hits, Ley would spend endless hours listening to the John Barry scores for the 007 films and other movie music. Hard earned cash soon disappeared on soundtracks, be it vinyl or CD (and now downloads) and what started as an interest has grown into a passion with a collection which seriously needs to be put in alphabetical order! Ley has been involved in radio production and broadcasting for over 25 years. Filmic has been on the air for 10 years playing new and vintage scores and together with it’s ‘weird and wonderful’ segments – you never quite know what you’re going to get! Popcorn compulsory. —— Cinematic Sound Radio Web: http://www.cinematicsound.net Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/cinsoundradio Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/cinematicsound Cinematic Sound Radio Fanfare and Theme by David Coscina https://soundcloud.com/user-970634922 Bumper voice artist: Tim Burden http://www.timburden.com
Our guest on this week's soundtracking is something of a protofeminist in Hollywood terms, in that he makes it his mission to put strong, charismatic women at the very centre of his narratives. Paul Feig made his name with Bridesmaids in 2011 - a much loved comedy starring Kristen Wiig, Rose Byrne and Mellisa McCarthy that has more than stood the test of time. 8 years later he's back with another female-led offering, Last Christmas, which was written by (and features) Emma Thompson and sees Emilia Clarke take the lead. Scored by Paul's regular collaborator Theodore Shapiro, Last Christmas is held together musically by a string of George Michael classics, both of whose work you'll hear plenty of ...

On today’s episode, we are presenting the long-awaited, final episode of our TOP 20 FAVOURITE SCORES OF 2017 program. I’ve been absent from the program for about a month now. A terrible flu ripped through my family in February, which also affected me, and only now am I starting to feel somewhat normal. The first part of our countdown celebrated selections 20 through to 11. You can hear that program by going to http://www.cinematicsound.net/favourite-scores-of-2017-part-i/ Today’s program presents suites from selections 10 through to 1 featuring the film, TV and video game music of Alexandre Desplat, John Williams, Theodore Shapiro, Jonny Greenwood, Yoko Kanno, George Kallis, Christopher Willis, Yasunori Mitsuda and Michael Giacchino. While I’m sure your personal best of 2017 list is very different than mine, I never expect anyone’s favourites to mirror my own, I offer you a chance to put me in my place. Please feel free to contact me or write in the comments section below with scores that I might have left off the list. With that, enjoy the countdown! [Watch the video interview on our YouTube Channel] Composer Theodore Shapiro sits down and talks in great depth about his career and recent works in this episode of All Access. Shapiro's filmography is unique in that his scores always seem to transcend genre boundaries and focus solely on the characters and emotional arcs no matter if the movie incorporates comedy, action, horror or drama. We talk at lengths about how he aspired to be a composer and that film composition came later down the road. The topic of typecasting comes up and Theodore talks about why it seems he tackles lots of comedies and action/comedies. We go into great lengths about building relationships and working with directors such as David Mamet, Ben Stiller and John Hamburg. Theodore also discusses his approach for certain films like The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty, Spy and his most recent score to Ghostbusters. We also touch upon the controversial backlash towards the new Ghostbusters and Theodore shares his whole view on the situation. Theodore Shapiro is such a great talent and a composer who has been able to build a unique sound as a storyteller whose music is admired by many. It was a great honor to have him as a guest.
