(0:00) Leroy Irvin and Cerrone Battle begin the show with reaction from the (5-4) 2OT/Final as the Panthers knot the Oilers in the Stanley Cup Finals (1-1). Former Bruin, Brad Marchand played a major role in the Panthers' Game 2 win, with 2 goals - including the game winner in 2OT. How should the Bruins fans feel about Marchand's impact this postseason? The musical theme is revealed to be songs about "Rain" - as it's another rainy, gloomy day in Massachusetts on a Saturday. (15:14) Leroy and Cerrone react to the Red Sox (9-6) loss to the New York Yankees. Leroy proclaims, "The thrill is gone!" and asks, "How can the rivalry get back to being exciting?" The panel share their thoughts. (25:28) Irvin and Battle break down the woes for the Red Sox following comments made postgame by Sox manager, Alex Cora. Leroy poses the question, "Who's to blame for the Red Sox underachieving thus far?" Is it fair to label Cora as the scapegoat for the Red Sox early season struggles? The duo discusses. (36:10) Who is the correct person/situation to direct blame towards for a team's demise? - The Owners? Upper Management? Coaching? Star Players? Lack of Supporting Talent? Being Soft? Boeing's upper management is being singled out as the main reason for its continued problems. The aerospace manufacturer's CEO is being questioned in the US Senate over safety issues and allegations the company has faced this year. Ex-employees allege the company has been cutting corners, hiding evidence from regulators, and skipping safety inspections. Aviation researcher Boyd Group International President Mike Boyd told Mike Hosking that Boeing has stopped investing in its planes. He says the problem is the upper management is more worried about the stock price than managing the company. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A few episodes before this, we focused on the tried and true leaders in Star Wars and all the redeeming qualities they shared as great leaders. This week? We're flipping the switch and going straight into Middle and Upper Management across the galaxy. Who do we think reigns supreme as Upper Management? And who we do think juuuuuust can't quite cut it and thus, remains in Middle Management? There's a lot of laughter in this episode, but we think we did a fairly good job labeling the bad bosses of Star Wars! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/most-things-kenobi/support

Wes Schaeffer states that his purpose in life is to rehabilitate salespeople and train their managers. Most managers are hired from within because they were successful. They were successful because they were hungry, aggressive, and impatient—not necessarily because they were the smartest or most detail-oriented salespeople. Those attributes are at odds with the management role. Those skills can harm them because they are aggressive and impatient with their team. They're putting pressure on their salespeople but don't have the skills to teach them. Salespeople are left on their own to make it or break it. Territory planning isn't taught. If it is, it's taught from a book—not from someone who did it successfully. So how do you change that? Find out from Wes in this episode of Sales Reinvented. Outline of This Episode [1:08] Why territory sales planning is underrated by salespeople [2:43] How to reduce reactivity with territory sales planning [5:13] Wes's ideal territory sales plan [8:08] Wes's version of the ABCs [10:38] Why you need to just start writing [13:50] Top three sales planning dos and don'ts [18:01] How to take control of your territory How to reduce reactivity with territory sales planning Most people are reactive to everything in their lives—it's not even necessarily a sales problem. The type of people that are drawn into sales are outgoing “people's people.” They're not engineers or accountants but simply good at making friends. Their personality is not methodical and goal-oriented. They're relationship-oriented. Now, they're being asked to plan. Wes wrote “The Seven Deadly Sins of Selling.” The first sin is shooting from the hip i.e. winging it. Most salespeople have been hired as a cultural fit. A sales manager probably isn't detail-oriented or has a methodical process for hiring and onboarding. There isn't a culture built around territory planning. Wes's ideal territory sales plan Wes instructs managers to manage activities and pay on results. Just like losing weight, closing a sale is a lagging indicator. If you want to lose 10 kilos in 90 days, stepping on the scale at 90 days only proves how diligent you were at following the process. What did you eat for every meal? How did you exercise? Maybe you hired a fitness coach or a dietician. Maybe you have a tracking app, planned your meals, and planned when to exercise and how much. If you're diligent for 90 days, you'll hit your goals. Sales managers don't give salespeople the activities to do. Wes tells people to batch phone calls: before breakfast, during lunch, and at the end of the day to get around gatekeepers. He has different scripts for each call. They're telling a story through multimedia and different steps. Wes gives his community a way to track their time in 15-minute increments. Whatever you measure, you can improve. Break your big plans down into 15-minute increments, i.e. what you have to accomplish to reach your lofty goals. When you are diligent with this, you're more likely to be successful. The characteristics a salesperson should have Wes emphasizes that the mantra “Always be closing” is crap. This idea was propagated when people the age of our grandfathers were in sales. Yet we still live by the adage. Wes's version of the ABCs is “Always be curious. Always be courteous. Always be concise.” Ask more questions. Take a step back and ask, “Where are you a product fit? Why do people buy your stuff? What pain do you solve?” Start there. Where do these people congregate? Wes was working for a startup in Austin, TX. The technology was beneficial in the healthcare space. Wes looked at technology in healthcare and there was a huge community with state and regional chapters. He joined those chapters and became active in those communities. He went where the fish were. You can't just go to the local swimming pool and drop a pole in the water because it's convenient. Tools, tactics, and strategies Wes embraces Wes gives out a free guide called “Process Before Login.” The concept is that you need to document your steps and track your activities before you log in to any tool. Because a tool won't save you. You know what your territory is. You have to figure out how to get in front of people. Can you knock on their door or go to events where they congregate? Once you plan daily and weekly activities, you can manage them. How many phone calls can you make? How many emails can you send? How many handwritten letters can you write? Do you have scripts for text messages? How are you engaging people on social media? If you're in B2B, LinkedIn can be good. But Wes gets more crappy messages on LinkedIn than anywhere else. Why? Because people don't know how to communicate. People are spending money to get in front of Wes with an awful message. Learn how to communicate. Blog. Write a post for LinkedIn. It can even be a FAQ post. Prepare written answers to objections ahead of time and link it to a blog or LinkedIn post you've written. Your prospect will be impressed. They'll think you know what you're talking about. If you do anything, Wes implores you to just start writing. Write a daily article for LinkedIn that your prospects would be interested in. Your life will change in 30 days. What are Wes's three sales planning dos and don'ts? Listen to find out—they might really surprise you. How do you take control of your territory? How do you disqualify a prospect to focus on the important accounts? Listen to hear Wes's process! In this episode of The QSR guru Podcast, the podcast dedicated to helping quick service restaurant leaders be the leaders that they want to be, we're going to discuss a problem that comes up a lot. And that is how to have the tough conversations with upper management.Sometimes you run into a situation where you have something that you think needs to happen, that's not really on the agenda of everyone that you work for. How do you have that conversation and not sound arrogant or not sound like you're trying to step on anyone's toes. You don't want to sound like you know more than they do, because that's not going to come across well, and odds are, you don't know more than they know, on every topic. Though on a specific topic, you might be more educated. And you might be able to provide some input that nobody else has thought of. So how do you go about having that conversation? Well, Matt, was recently in that situation, where not only did he strongly feel that he had ideas that were a little bit better than what were already happening. He had already vocalized his thoughts on the person that they brought in, to run the plan. This person had worked for the brand in the past, and he was terminated in the past. So Matt was very vocal about this not being the right direction. And this person was hired anyway. So as he wants to go about running his marketing plan, how does he talk about that, with the people above him without sounding like he has a personal vendetta against this new individual. You have to be very, very thoughtful in how you go about this, because you don't want to come off the wrong way. Part of being a leader is having those tough conversations. And another part of being a leader is being able to step back and know when you've gone too far, or stop yourself before you have gone too far. That's what Matt and Tricia are going to talk about in this episode of The QSR guru podcast. They're going to talk about how to navigate this specific conversation without stepping on anyone's toes and without sounding arrogant, and without coming across, like you have a bad attitude. The difference between the current paradigm of practicing as a Clinical Therapist in our conventional, outdated, and toxic system is ruled by politics and bureaucracy. Rachel Kelly has transformed her life as well as up-leveled her impact she can have on clients by taking her method of helping those in need into her own hands. In this episode from a recent Instagram Live, Rachel and Gabby both share their own experiences of practicing within the current therapy system, and just how backwards the system is. This outdated and mismanaged structure not only produces overwhelm and burnout for therapists, but also prevents them from being empowered to help their clients. They explain the difference between conventional therapy and the realm of coaching which has such a stigma, that it is disregarded and assumed to be illegitimate and unethical. Rachel answers questions from the live audience and explains her view, and Gabby talks about how coaching being an “unregulated space” can be a very good thing. “The Irony of it was that all the people that were making decisions about my clients were people that were not actually working with my clients or actually therapists at all, it was just Upper Management and there was such a hierarchy, and there was no sense of Empowerment therapists to be able to advocate for their clients” -Rachel Kelly [3:42] Rachel Kelly, Emotional Wellness Coach, introduces herself and talks about the repetitive theme of toxicity and burnout in the conventional therapy space that she experienced for years on end [10:02] Rachel talks about how she was treated by her manager and director when she told them that she was “overwhelmed” with her job seeing way too many clients per week [18:41] The major difference between therapy and coaching, and why traditional clinical therapy is driven by politics and bureaucracy an horribly outdated [26:04] Rachel talks about how she started to discover the world of coaching and how the more she learned about it, she felt more and more drawn towards becoming a coach [27:58] Rachel and Gabby answer a question from the live audience “What do you think of folks who are coaching without psych training? The stigma comes from folks giving bad unwarranted advice” [33:02] The GOOD and BAD of Coaching being an “unregulated space” This week's guest was Rachel Kelly! Rachel is an Emotional Wellness Coach. Should we oversimplify statistics, or should managers learn more about statistics? If you've been working as a statistician for a while, you know that you have to keep it simple if you want managers to understand you. Of course, I speak about those managers not being statisticians themselves. There are a lot of ways to explain statistical concepts to them, but this adds time to the presentation. Sometimes there won't even be a presentation, and all you have is sending the report via email. From reading, from my experience, and from talking to other experienced statisticians, I have distilled the knowledge about this challenge into 5 steps.

Well, it has finally happened. I have died and come back. And through it all, I just kept on playing the game with my American opponent. One move per day: One black stone for him and one white stone for me. Now, I didn't actually die but an attempt to shut the game down was made. It came from a source that on one level had nothing to do with the game, yet the signs were there in hindsight. So now you, dear listener, must be wondering what's so special about the game we are playing? On the surface, to that question, the answer is nothing. But on a deeper level, the game represents a world in which that source (I'm referring too) has been eliminated by the fact that they just don't exist and therefore are irrelevant. This may seem totally ridiculous and not worth trying to shut the game down for, but imagine a world in which your whole idea of the game, for example, revolves around The Middle Kingdom and who controls it. And then, all of a sudden - POOF! The Middle Kingdom is no longer in the middle. If your frame of reference no longer exists as an ongoing concern, what then? What should have happened was to relearn the game and not live off the coat tails of previous sages. Instead, what did happen was that nobody was allowed to play the game on home ground. And so nobody did or does. Which is in the game of weiqi how you lose stones: Surround and capture. One moment a group of stones exist on the board, and then, in the next moment they no longer exist. Sucked straight out of the game's reality and into the basket of no return. Except of course, if you play by the rules of “Upper Management”. These so called Shen or spirit stones have a habit of dying off the weiqi board and then reappearing somewhere else to fuck up whatever strategy or tactic was in motion. These Shen or spirit stones exist so that The Middle Kingdom does not stagnate and die from isolation. They move and act by the paradigms that only the Jade Emperor can elect. No earthly governance can force Heaven's Will. So when a game of weiqi has begun, it must be allowed to play itself out to its own conclusion; least the ramifications be manifested in the physical (jurisdiction) ⚔️圍棋戰聖 Follow on Insta: @baguazhang_

The traditional Chinese character for qi is made up of two parts. The first upper part is the character for air. The second lower part is the character for rice. For a lot of rice eating countries, rice is the staple and represents earthly qi; earthly nourishment. And by further extension: A person's wealth. From time to time, you will notice that I will talk about qi and wealth combined. They are interlinked. Even now, in our Western capitalist based society in which wealth and success tends to get measured by how much money we have, money is a form of energy exchange between people: Electronic numerical transactions that is only underwritten (these days) by the might of the country that prints it, if that. The Genchitaofu Baguazhang's Qi is about fully comprehending qi in all its tangible forms. And as a result, appreciating what true reality was for the ancient masters instead of just idealizing romantic notions of the past, by having real life as the ultimate sensei. To give you an example. Towards the end of 2019, a guide of the Japanese Imperial Palace, posted on social media a picture by Yoshitoshi called 'Inamurgasaki no akebono no tsuki" or in english: The Promontory Moon at Daybreak. As part of the posting, the guide wrote: I feel heartbreaking grief when I see the painting by Yoshitoshi. Nitta Yoshida (1301 – 1338) was about to throw his sword into the sea. The sword is a symbol of the samurai. To throw a sword (into the sea) means to die for a samurai. It was a beautiful yet poinent scene. And because it also touched something within me as well, I decided to leave this comment: I love this moment. I can't tell you how many times I've experienced this moment in my own life. I thought that would be it, but to my surprise, I got a reply: Peter-san, did you? Would you tell me more about it if possible? Sure, I answered. If you don't mind... Out here in the west, the samurai are seen from a highly romantic ideal. And while a lot of men and boys dream of being one, we give lip-service to it by choosing to only focus on the fantasy that never was. To live in the modern world like a true samurai (in the original meaning of the word, first) is to confront the stark realities of everyday life. Yes, I do martial arts everyday & yes, I practice with katanas. But it is when I'm kneeling on the wooden floor with the katana laying in front of me, that there are times when I have to confront a scene where my rice bucket is literally (NOT metaphorically) less than half full. Yes. I kid you not. My wealth is tied to how much rice I have in my house. The day I discovered this truth was the day I was arguing with my wife about the original meaning of samurai. For her (being Chinese) it meant Japanese Bushido. But for me it means to serve. But without an earthly lord, I work for "Upper Management". Have I come close to throwing away my katana in the trash? Many times. Usually over money issues. But each time, I listen to my soul. Put the katana back in its resting place. And cross the river. When I was done, I posted my reply. But she replied, saying: Peter-san, thank you. Everything starts to dream, and I am sure we are reaching a romantic ideal, slowly, day by day. Thank you. I enjoyed it! I don't think she fully understood what I was saying. And I don't blame her. I was recounting a specific moment of my life I do not want to repeat, relive or revisit. It was part of my 'staying grounded and keeping it real' martial arts phase. Which is ironic. Because what was a painful series of situations for me, and my family, sounds to other people like a sailor's tall tale about catching the big one that got away. But whatever you want to believe, and you're welcome to laugh on it, but I can tell you this: I will always make sure my house is well-stocked with rice.
In this episode of the Qualitalks Podcast, Alex Hall and Yan Kugel discussed Risk Management in the pharmaceutical industry. Risk Management is a critical topic that is, unfortunately, misunderstood by many pharmaceutical companies. Many take the reactive approach instead of the proactive one, which can cause them a lot of money and risk customer lives. Any decision–making process about risks to product quality involves risk management to a greater or lesser extent. Here are some of the things that we can learn in the pharma industry about Risk Management: 1. What is the definition of Risk? 2. How does it affect the pharma industry? 3. How to avoid these Risks in the pharma industry? 4. What is the Role of Upper Management? 5. What are the strategies for Risk Management? The cult classic, Office Space, was released to VHS and DVD 20 years ago this month. It came out in theaters earlier in 1999, but hardly anyone saw it then. It only became popular after the home video release, so it seemed timely to commemorate that event with a set of blog articles reflecting on the quintessential lessons therein. In late 1999, I was early in my professional IT career. I was living the hilarity that I saw on the... Have you ever been in a situation where you had to reprimand an employee? Or how about confront a friend or family member about their actions that hurt your feelings or came across the wrong way? If you're anything like me, you probably want to give them a piece of your mind LOUD and CLEAR but you and I both know that we cannot effectively communicate with anyone when we are angry and spitting hate at the other person. So I've been practicing the concept of Love Sandwiches for about 10 years now or ever since I've been in Supervisory or Upper Management roles in previous careers. When you have to bring in an employee to discuss their performance or reprimand them for an unacceptable action, you can't come across guns blazing and telling them everything they have done wrong. Chances are they already know why you want to talk to them in the first place so I always give them the opportunity to explain why I want to talk to them prior to me saying anything. For example, "Do you know why I brought you into my office today?" They usually replied with a head nod or a simple yes with an explanation as to why they did what they did and how they will correct it going forward. I give people the space to come to their own conclusion before I say a word. Then I drop the Love Sandwich on them. Nobody likes to be constantly told what they are doing wrong so I like to start with what they are doing right. Bottom of sandwich: Give them praise for the things they do well either as an employee, family member or friend. People LOVE hearing what they are great at and actually love getting compliments even when they are hard to receive sometimes. I often share specific examples of things they do well, things they've gone above and beyond for or specifically praise one aspect of their personality that really stands out to me. Middle of sandwich: Drop the truth bomb. This is where you say what they did wrong, what needs improvement, how they upset you or the family, or whatever interaction that was unpleasant or unacceptable. This is where you talk about the areas of improvement. I always like to write this out before I speak it because sometimes I can use harsh language or too proper of language and it doesn't sound like me which can also be misleading. I don't want others to get the feel that someone is MAKING me do this. I want them to know that I genuinely care and I want to help them work through this challenge that we are currently having. Top of sandwich: This is where you give them praise again and reassure them that you will get through this together. You will also want to empathize with them and let them know that you can understand things from their perspective and what they did what they did or thought the way they thought. This is where you will have to remove yourself from the situation and gain a better understanding of how they process thoughts, action and feelings and understand where they are coming from. People really love it when you can empathize with their situation and genuinely care about them and why they do the things they do. Who knows? You might actually learn something new about this person because you were able to allow them the space to open up to you! Make sure that whatever they say to you in private, stays that way. Often times when you allow others the space to trust you an open up, they expect you to keep their words confidential, as you should. So that is it! A Love Sandwich. This works in so many situations. Employees. Clients. Friends. Family. Kids. You name it. Anytime you need to have an uncomfortable conversation with someone, create the time and space that works for both of you to sit down and have a meaningful conversation around the topic at hand. This will allow you both some time to think about what you want to say prior to saying hurtful things in the heat of the moment. I know I have said hurtful things that I later regretted far too many times. It hurts my heart to know that I can never take back those words. I'm not perfect and still sometimes loose my shit when I'm talking to someone but I try my best to make sure that I can reflect on what I want to effectively communicate to the other person and set up a time that I can have a heart to heart where we both feel heard and understood. Essentially, a Love Sandwich is a meaningful effective conversation where you share what you love about the person, what you'd like to work on, repeat what you love about them and how you understand where you both are coming from. It's simple really. Be a good human. See things from more than one perspective. Tell them what they are great at before you tell them what they need to work on. Say it with kindness and with love. Be authentically you and express your concern and how you're willing to help them through this challenge. If you loved this, please share with a friend on social media! I'd also love to hear your thoughts if this works for you or if you've tried a Love Sandwich before. Send me your emails to support@saushadavis.com or DM me on Instagram @Sausha.Davis. In this episode, Dave and Jamison answer these questions: How do I deal with the manager on my team who is both not very technical and positions himself as the “boss” spending almost no time with the team (except dragging everyone into more and more meetings! 😡) . My manager upsets and demotivates the team but not upper management and is clearly trying to climb the career ladders as fast as possible. Obviously everyone wants the team to succeed but the friction is growing. Some team members already left with (maybe too subtle) hints at the problem. Should one stage a coup and take over? Silently manipulate people to go to into “the right” direction? Switch teams/jobs and see it burn from the sidelines 🍿? While testing my system at work, I was shocked how little security there was. Two issues exposed the entire system’s data by just changing the query string. Also every API call had no backend check on the user making the call. These are just two examples of many. This is at a gigantic multi billion dollar institution handling hundreds of thousands of people’s data, some of it incredibly sensitive. This fact will be known on my resume. This leads to my question: I am looking for a new job now, and wondering how much detail about these security issues is appropriate to share on a resume? I feel this helps me stand out as a newer dev, but would this be frowned upon by prospective employers that may worry I might overshare their own security issues? Thanks for all your help!

This week Jamison and Dave answer these questions: Upper management has a negative impression of me because of an early manager. How do I manage and improve my reputation with mid and upper level management, who I interact with very rarely? I have a job offer I feel unqualified for. Should I decline this offer I honestly don’t deserve, or face a massive amount of impostor syndrome and risk not delivering?
