Our goal as a podcast has been to prove that anything can be made funny, and sometimes we have to point out the times that DON'T work. Comedian and host of the Kill Tony Podcast, Tony Hinchcliffe, found himself in hot water after video surfaced of him using a racial slur and several stereotypes when referring to Chinese comedian Peng Dang immediately after taking the mic from Dang onstage at the Vulcan Gas Company in Austin. Instead of our scheduled episode, we decided to devote a special episode to consider the situation from multiple angles, and ask: What didn't work? Why? What could've worked? How could everyone have handled the situation better? We also talk about: -Why Tony's jabs at Peng Dang and Chinese culture created an uproar. -Trying to find the funny in culturally insensitive riffing. -Playing devil's advocate. -Poking holes in outrage. -How words unintentionally empower action. -If Peng should've reached out to Tony personally before posting the infamous clip. -Examples of equally cringeworthy and hilarious social commentary from people like Sacha Baron Cohen and Eric Andre. -How nuance is conditioned out of people and replace by thinking in absolutes. -Far right comedians profiting off of ignorance. -And more! If the Covid-19 pandemic has taught us anything, it's that we all need to be prepared to navigate our business (and lives) through disruption and uncertainty so it's strong and secure enough to weather any storm and emerge stronger from it. The question is how do we do this? The simple answer is by building resilience into your business. “There’s always hope, you have to take the first steps.” -Tony In today’s episode, I’m talking with a current patient who has been with us at Rock Recovery Center for three weeks and is 31 days clean today! He is 37 years old and comes to us from Detroit, Michigan. His sister would take care of him and his siblings, as his mom was “in and out a lot” as a result of her addiction to drugs and alcohol. He didn’t lead a “normal” childhood life and grew up on the rough streets of Detroit. Tony remembers visiting his aunt and cousins, who lived down the road. When his father found out where he was living, he drove to Detroit and moved in with his mom. They were trying to mend their marriage when his dad died of an asthma attack in 1992 when Tony was seven years old. Tony found himself in the same previous situation with his mom’s addiction and his unstable childhood. Tony and his siblings were dispersed among both sides of the family, he ended up with his grandmother and a violent uncle. At the age of 16, Tony decided he had enough and left his home to find his mom. He enrolled in school and stayed with his mom. He grew up in and out of foster care as a result of his mother’s addiction and ran away from the group home where he was living. At the age of 17, he remembers meeting up with other kids who ran away and recalled taking his first drink of alcohol. “I don’t know if I liked it, but I did notice that it got me out of myself. It made me more comfortable with my surroundings and what was going on at that time.” As a child of mixed races, Tony experienced racism from both white and black communities and felt that he never “fit in” either culture. He started working out and landed a job as a bouncer in a local nightclub. Tony found it easy to hang out with the girls who worked there, who were also addicts. At this point, he was introduced to cocaine, and he found he liked the excitement and attention he was getting. He started experimenting with shooting up the pills and found out that he needed to have his opiates to feel good. Tony then realized that heroin was cheaper and easier to use and became addicted to heroin. Listen in to find out how Tony hit rock bottom and finally ended up clean at Rock Recovery Center. At Rock Recovery Center, we take a humanistic approach to recovery, teaching our clients how to live independently in a sober world. We care about the success and safety of each and every one of our clients from the moment they step into our center to the future of their well-being. Check out my new website where you can download any episode right from my site along with other useful information for those in recovery. Share this podcast with a friend and leave us a review! Tony Nash is co-founder and CEO of Booktopia, which employs 260 people, generates over $170M and sells one item every six seconds. Tony’s story, however, really starts when he dropped out of college to travel the world for three years - what he now credits to being his version of a degree. It paved the way to founding several businesses across different domains, one of which was sold to a listed company, before several strokes of serendipity led Tony to found Booktopia in 2004. We unpacked numerous topics in this conversation, including: How to build great teams Why you should just start, instead of waiting for a great idea The value of a positive and empowering outlook ...and so much more that Tony credits with the success of Booktopia. This is a must listen for anybody trying to build anything great and enduring, so without further ado, I bring you the one and only, Tony Nash. Note: We’ll have Tony back on the show in the near future to talk going from zero to $170M in part 2 of the conversation, with all of the struggles and challenges overcome along the way. --- Topics Discussed: Playing ZORK Dropping out of college Lessons learned traveling the world for three years in his 20s Recruitment and people How to attract and retain great talent What Tony looks for in new hires Questions to ask when hiring Why Tony set up his own firm instead of working for someone else How an SEO company evolved into Booktopia Building company culture Starting Booktopia as a side hustle on $10 a day Not raising capital Thriving through disruption to the book landscape Tony’s most impactful books read Show Notes: Booktopia.com.au We are the only company to make the AFR/BRW Fast 100 for 8 years from 2009 to 2017. We are proudly 100% Australian owned and love what we are achieving here. I started Booktopia in February 2004 on a budget of $10/day as a side project. All of this has been accomplished with no external investment. We simply sold more books and reinvested the proceeds. I have been in business with my brother, sister & brother-in-law for the past 21 years. Booktopia has 13,000 sqm of office and warehouse and it is our stock holding of 150,000 titles and ability to ship books immediately that is proving to separate us from any local competitors. SELF MADE STRATEGIES EPISODE 056 WITH TONY LUKE, JR. (NOTE: Listener Discretion is Advised - This Episode Contains Adult Content and Subject Matter That May Be Difficult to Listen to. We chose to maintain the integrity of Tony's message by minimally editing this episode, so use your discretion when listening. We hope you enjoy it!) Anthony Lucidonio, Jr., better known as Tony Luke, Jr., is an American entrepreneur, restaurateur, actor, TV personality (way back on Prism), musician, media host and (NOW) an anti-addiction-stigma activist. Tony co-founded the cheesesteak and sandwich franchise Tony Luke's. In the early 1990s Luke, his brother, Nicky, and their father bought a property near the expressway in South Philadelphia, where no one (at the time) wanted to build anything in that area, to open a small sandwich shop. To compete with other local businesses, the original Tony Luke's stand offered a more diversified menu, initially offering roast pork sandwiches, hoagies and other fare. Originally, there were no cheesesteaks, but as always Tony Luke gave the people what they wanted (eventually adding cheesesteaks to the menu). Soon thereafter, PhillyMag ranked Tony Luke’s as BOTH the best Roast Pork sandwich AND the best Cheesesteak in Philly. That doubled their business almost overnight and led to Tony Luke taking over the store's marketing. Eventually, the business grew to include several locations in the Philadelphia area and a line of frozen sandwiches. Through a partnership with Rastelli Foods Group, the business now has several franchised locations worldwide, including in Bahrain. Tony Luke’s would turn into a household name, and Tony Luke Jr would become the face of the franchise: starring in TV and radio commercials, facing off with Bobby Flay in a “Throwdown,” and even getting his own show on Spike TV (“Frankenfood”). But, before his father even had the thought to build a sandwich shop, Tony Luke Jr had already lived multiple lives: from being a rough-and-tumble South Philly kid, to a budding Hollywood movie star in LA, to scoring a record deal as the crooner of an R&B band. Tony Luke was born in South Philly and attended the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts in its first year (Tony was an “original”). Tony Luke credits CAPA as having saved his life. During his time at CAPA, Tony hustled his way into a cast party for Rocky II (in Philly). Using methamphetamine and other drugs as a teenager, Tony Luke now uses that experience, as well as the fighting and hustling of his youth, to explain to kids that difficulties can be overcome. SHOW AGENDA On today’s episode we will: Get to know Tony and hear his amazing story We will discuss Tony Luke's strategies for maintaining your edge Discuss the benefits of collaborating to make magic happen What you will hear on this episode: Why Tony believes that his gut leads him where he needs to be How every day in life, Tony tries to strengthen his weaknesses and tries every day in his life to share his strengths with other people to help their weaknesses become stronger (and why you should do the same) Why ego can never be a part of growth How Tony Luke, Jr., along with his father and brother, literally built Tony Luke's Why strategic marketing initiatives were at the core of making "Tony Luke" into a household name How a Heroin overdose brought Tony Luke to collaborate with several musicians to raise mental health and addiction stigma awareness Information about the Sound Mind Network and their initiatives to raise awareness How Tony Luke deals with competitors And so much more! When I started the podcast, The School of Greatness, one of the top three people I wanted to get on the show was Tony Robbins. That happened in Episode 109, and it's been one of the most popular episodes to date. With the release of the paperback version of his book, we were asked to bring him back on, and I gladly accepted as I knew there was much more wisdom we could all learn from someone doing this work for nearly 40 years. This time we met on his private jet as he was about to take off from LA. My good friend Nick Onken, one of the world's top lifestyle photographers, came along to take all of the photos you see on this post as well. It was awesome. And our conversation took a different turn than the first time we discussed money. Tony took a deep dive into the mindset of abundance, positivity, faith, and prosperity. He told incredible stories of how this applies in real life - even when you're broke! And he gave some important updates about his previous financial advice in the book.Don't miss this powerful conversation in Episode 311 with the man, Tony Robbins. Some questions I ask:How can someone have a mindset of giving when they can barely pay their bills? (2:03)What is the one strategy you would coach if you had nothing else to share? (13:19)How do you stay hungry? (15:25)How do you stay grounded in your personal relationships with so much demand for your time? (18:36)Is your intimate partner a big influence in how much wealth you will create? (23:40)In this episode you will learn:Why Tony is so driven (not what you'd think) (11:50)The common denominator under every successful person (13:33)What a fiduciary is and why Tony is changing his recommendations about them (33:30)Where the power of commitment makes the biggest difference in your happiness (42:00)Plus much more...Learn more about your ad choices. This week on the PRmoment Podcast, in the latest of our life stories series, I’m pleased to welcome co-founder and CEO of Lansons Tony Langham.Lansons is one of the UK's largest independent PR consultancies - with a fee income of circa £14m.The business was founded in 1989 by Tony and his now wife Clare Parsons. Lansons has about 110 employees. Here is a summary of what Tony and I discussed:[00:00:42] Tony tells us about the series of events that led to him and Clare launching Lansons. [00:02:56] Why, despite maxing out his and Clare Parson's new AMEX cards when they launched Lansons, they didn't really see it as a risk. [00:03:55] Tony tells us what it's like running a business with his wife for nearly 30 years. [00:06:47] Tony talks us through Lansons' ownership structure - where half of the business is owned by employees and approximately 50 percent is owned by Clare and Tony. [00:07:28] and [00:05:23] Why Lansons tends to follow a business cycle of investment where profits flatten for a while before it goes off on another growth spurt. [00:08:25] How, driven by uncertainty around Brexit, Lansons is hedging its bets by looking at international expansion. [00:11:11] The process of how Lansons has "themes" of investments it would like to make and then attempts to recruit the right person or people for the opportunity. [00:11:55] Why the need for consolidation in the agency market is an opportunity for independent cash rich firms like Lansons. [00:14:56] How does entrepreneurship manifest itself within an agency environment? [00:15:56] Why every single entrepreneurial decision has an upside and a downside. [00:18:33] Tony talks us through the investment decisions he made for Hope&Glory and Opinium Research, the combined revenues of which are now almost the same and Lansons. [00:23:28] Why Tony believes the British are too cautious investors in business and why he worries that we're getting more cautious. [00:24:36] Tony tells us why he decided to write a book on Reputation Management: The Future of Corporate Communications and Public Relations. [00:26:20] Why Tony believes the PR sector is not defining its contribution to business in the right way. [00:29:22] How writing a book meant he only got four and a half hours sleep for six months.[00:33:49] How Tony sees the PR agency model changing. [00:38:12] Why holding companies like WPP and Omnicom seem to be accepting that agency brand names aren't that important. [00:39:20] Whether an agency’s customers buy its services because they trust the brand or because of the quality of its people. [00:40:19] Tony identifies which agencies he believes are on the up. [00:42:04] Why Tony believes that "if the (PR) industry has a danger, it is that it's running itself at too lower margin and it's competing too aggressively." [00:42:41] How the differential in remuneration between management consultancies and investment banks on the one side and PR firms on the other has increased during Tony's career - and why he worries this will impact the future talent the sector is able to attract.

Everyone feels fear. From the biggest, toughest, most jacked dudes on earth to small children and frail, elderly women, fear is an emotion all humans know well. If we all feel it, what separates those who take action and do what’s necessary in the face of fear from those who let it cripple them? The answer can sometimes mean the difference between life and death. Tony Blauer has dedicated his life to teaching people how to understand and manage their fear even, and especially, in the most stressful, dangerous and violent situations. He is the creator of the Spontaneous Protection Enabling Accelerated Response (S.P.E.A.R.) self-defense system. Back on Renegade Radio for the 2nd time, in this episode Tony provides an in-depth explanation of the emotion known as fear and teaches you what happens physiologically when you experience it. Whether it’s so you can defend yourself if necessary, give an amazing presentation, perform well in a job interview or just have the confidence of knowing you’ll take action when faced with it, you must learn to conquer your fear. But before you can defeat it, you need to understand it. To learn how, listen as we discuss: Why Tony started doing Tai chi with Dr. Mark Cheng [12:23] Is his intensity sometimes misconstrued? [18:25] Would fear stop you from defending yourself? [22:59] Why learning self-defense is as easy has flipping a switch. [31:26] Does he actually teach self-defense, or is it something else? [37:39] Strategies you can implement today to lower the “fear spike” of a violent encounter. [43:14] How he created an algorithm for self-defense by teaching the elderly. [55:42] What happens to your body during an attack? [1:03:27] Tips to mentally prepare for a big meeting, speech or presentation. [1:08:05] Does he ever second guess himself and is he still his own worst critic? [1:16:00] How has he improved and what means more to him now than it did 20 years ago? [1:20:10] His thoughts on man’s search for meaning and creating amazing relationships. [1:26:24] What got him reignited to start writing his book? What could happen in your future if you could make your past work for you? It’s an incredible thought, isn’t it? Today’s guest, Tony Grebmeier has lived that story and continues to live it day by day as he seeks to add blessings and benefit to the lives of those he meets. On this episode of Growth to Freedom, Tony shares his powerful story of personal failure, addiction and the road back to wholeness. It’s a story that traverses many highs and lows and ends with a man on fire to bring help to those who are ready to help themselves. This is one of those inspiring stories that could turn someone’s life around, so make sure you not only listen to it yourself, but share it with others as well. Everything I have is a byproduct of me admitting that I need help ~ Tony Grebmeier Tony recognizes that his fast track to the bottom was precipitated by his unwillingness to allow others into his life. The way he says it is that he “spent a lifetime pushing people away.” But once he came to the realization that he needed the help of others and that many people had been placed into his life to BE that help, he began to make the long climb upward. Now he is at a place few entrepreneurs reach: co-founder of an Inc. 500 company (Ship Offers) and fiercely focused on adding value and blessing to the lives of everyone he meets. Tony’s story is an example of what can happen when you begin connecting with people on deep levels and allowing those who care about you to speak truth into your life. Be sure to pass this story along to others. As much as any conversation you’ve heard on Growth to Freedom, this one has the potential to truly change the lives of those who might need it most right now, and you can be an instrument of that change through sharing it. Thanks for caring. Today we talk with Tony Stubblebine. Tony is the CEO and Founder of Coach.me. Tony originally started his company as Lift. It was an app you used to help you make personal changes. But it was failing fast. Lift looked successful to users but was losing money day after day. Tony had a choice to make, close down Lift or make a change. And that change is what Tony and I discuss in today’s show. Here’s what else you’ll discover in this episode: Why he wanted to build tools that helped people to achieve, as he said, “really astounding things.” Tony response when he went to the bank to get a loan and they asked him, “How is it you have so many users but you’re losing money?” How the fear of losing your team when you make changes in the company stops some founders to stop growing. How they made the decision to pivot when the choice was either “shut down or try something new.” How the branding change was the beginning of the difference that made the difference. How Tim Ferriss, one of their advisors, had an idea for a challenge inside Lift started their coaching platform. The importance of a name change and why it was necessary to evolve from no profit to a revenue generating company. How their old name caused a support nightmare. What does it mean to be a ‘founder’ of a company? Why they took 4 years to, “find our legs.” Why Tony brought his investors along to coach.me after the change. The problems facing you don’t always change because the baggage you had before is brought along for the change. Tony’s challenge running a startup with revenue coming in and expenses to support staff. How he faces the challenge to bring on quality new people who aren’t sure this is something they want to risk and commit to. Why he said, “It’s interesting to look back on how much failure effects you physically and emotionally.” How things seem much simpler for Tony now that coach.me is moving more smoothly. How they evolved to creating a business-to-consumer-to-business coaching model now. Why Coach.me is moving into the business coaching market and how they’re making the transition. Why Tony loves to read case studies of successful people. How Jerry Seinfeld accidentally became the productivity hero with his one tip. Why Tony would love to have the opportunity to talk with Oprah. What Tony means when he said, “It’s not about finding the optimal strategy. It’s about finding the optimal packaging that makes it easy to adopt that strategy.” Why he said, “My job is to learn about human potential. What makes humans excel and succeed?” Enjoy the show.
Today’s guest is Tony Woodall. Tony is involved in so many different things, it’s really mind boggling. He’s a man of different talents. He’s an Electronic Content Management Specialist, a blogger, a speaker, a podcaster, and author of “The 9 Steps To Successful Goal Achievement: The How To Guide For Goal Setting Success!” One of Tony's first passions is helping people succeed and improve their careers and lives. He created a training program, “GoalGetting, Don't Just Set'em, Get'em” as a way to share the skills needed to set goals effectively, use techniques to change the negative, limiting beliefs and thoughts in the subconscious mind and turn them into goal-achieving, success-oriented, positive beliefs and thoughts that will allow you to Get The Goals You Set! You’ll enjoy this conversation. Tony’s a great guy! TWEET: The 9 steps to achieving any goal, on this episode of #ChasingDreams with Aimee J What are limiting beliefs and why are they so difficult to overcome? Whether you’ve heard the term “limiting beliefs” or not, they’ve impacted your life to a great degree. To simply define the idea, limiting beliefs are the things you believe that are not true, but you live as if they are. The reason these beliefs are so powerful is because you accept them without question and they dictate what you will do, attempt, or follow through on. They’re incredibly difficult to overcome because you don’t see them. It takes a lot of work to recognize them, identify them, and begun “unprogramming” yourself from that wrong belief. Tony Woodall helps people overcome limiting beliefs all the time and he’s going to unpack the concept of overcoming them, on this episode of Chasing Dreams. TWEET: Your #LimitingBeliefs are showing! Find out how to overcome them on this episode To accomplish your goals you’ve got to be clear on WHAT it is you want to achieve. And by clear, today’s guest means CRYSTAL CLEAR. So clear that you can write it down. Why is writing it down so important? Because if you can’t write it down, you won’t be dedicated to exactly what it is. You won’t be able to know when you’ve accomplished it. You won’t experience the exhilaration and confidence that comes with accomplishing your goal. But you’ve also got to determine some sort of realistic timeframe for achieving it. Notice the word “realistic” in there. You can’t make a goal to become a millionaire and tie it into a one week timeframe. You’ve got to be smart about it, setting a time limit that is both realistic but challenging. Tony Woodall is an expert on this stuff, so be sure you take a listen to his explanation of these vital aspects of goal setting. After you know WHAT you’re going for, you’ve got to determine HOW you’re going to get it. Some people call this an “action plan.” Others consider it to be the steps that make up the goal. No matter what you call it, you’ve got to systematically figure out how you’re going to move toward your goal. Doing this gives you tangible steps you can take, day by day, to move you toward the goal. It’s a great part of what will keep you motivated as you slog through the grind of getting things done. It’s an important aspect of seeing your goal come to fruition right before your eyes as you do things every day to make it happen. Without this vital piece, you’re sure to miss the goal altogether. Find out more on this episode as Aimee J chats with Tony Woodall about his “9 Steps to Successful Goal Achievement.” The motivation piece of every goal: the WHY. You remember the kid in your neighborhood who always asked, “Why?” Then when you told him, he asked, “Why?” again! You know, that kid was on to something important. Knowing exactly and clearly “why” you are going for the goal you are is the foundational thing that will keep you motivated every day as you do the hard work of overcoming obstacles, beating down roadblocks, and ignoring the negative voices so that you can reach that goal. When you have a clear “why” behind your goal you’re able to revisit it time and time again, as many times as it takes, to keep you motivated and on track. Be sure to hear what Tony Woodall has to say about this vital aspect of goal reaching, on this episode of Chasing Dreams with Aimee J.
