In the latest pod, you chatted about installing solar cells over parking lots in France. Here in South Africa it is becoming the norm. Below is a picture taken at a large national chain. A time when so many people, including us, had a cheap second-hand upright piano in the house. The idea - great pianists played their tunes which were ‘recorded' onto paper rolls and those who made the Piano Rolls of paper with holes in them, sold them to Joe Public and anyone with the Pianola could then slot the roll into their piano (with an opening hatch at the front so you could see turning it if you wanted to) replicate perfectly the performance as it was originally played. Some performers cheated with this and conned the listeners of course! I remember playing with the speed - so if you pedalled slower, it slowed down and the tones became deeper - speed up and vice-versa. As a 5 year-old boy, I was fascinated! How did they work? I shall try and uncover it before we record - take a principle like a music box cylinder perhaps and apply it to holes instead of twang-prongs?! I couldn't get hold of a Nexus One, so settled for the Desire, which I still think is one of the best looking Android phones we've seen. I did jump on the Nexus train with the Nexus S though, which I picked up on impulse from CEX Great Yarmouth while on holiday! I loved that curved screen. As Gareth pointed out, the OEM's UI's were horribly intrusive and slowed the devices down, so the pure Android experience meant significantly more then, than it does now. Most phones I bought were rooted and running Cyanogenmod within a few weeks. Once you're set up, having the ability to play anywhere you want, is pretty great. The games are fun, well-rendered, hook you quickly, and we had really good experiences in terms of resolution on our TV and frankly our Chrome browser too. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/elgordocircuito/message

On this episode, we talk about announcements to expect at Google I/O 2021, massive corporate earnings, and a truckload of new devices. We also wonder what the world would be like if Apple's iMessage came to Android. Finally, we say goodbye to Russell Holly and Hayato Huseman as members of the team. Russell is moving on to become a Managing Editor for CNET, and Hayato will be joining the crew over at MKBHD's YouTube empire as a video producer. Maybe we can start calling him HHUHD? Good luck to you both, gentlemen. We will miss you so much! Tom discusses a new feature from Facebook in this replay episode. They will be testing then rolling out a feature that will allow users to "snooze" desired key words. Tom gives his thoughts on that decision and speculates as to the reason for the feature and the possible backlash that may arise. He also talks about new phones, specifically the posibility for a flip phone with 3 screens could be on the market soon. Tom then goes over what's new from Amazon, as they have annouced the release of a dock for your Amazon Fire HD 8 or Fire HD 10 that will allow it to funcion like an Echo Show. It will be complete with Alexa hands free features. Amazon updated its 8-inch Fire HD 8 tablet for 2020 and introduced the HD 8 Plus, with wireless charging, better performance and a slightly increased price. So which one is for you? CNET's David Carnoy has the review.
Steven's here, Robin's there, and Andy is... somewhere! Yes, it's Tech Talk o'clock! On today's show, we hear from RNIB Library and Newsagent Manager James Bartlett, who chats to Rowland Myers about the RNIB's online accessible book library, Steven gives a demo of how to set up and access the service using the Dolphin EasyReader app, and Robin tells us all about the updates to Narrator, and gives a rather eye-opening horse/donkey analogy! Also on this weeks episode: Andy McNab vs Hamish Macbeth, details about the impending Windows update, chocolate in the fridge, Linux, ElBraille, NVDA vs Narrator, Apple Watch recommendations, Andy's confusion regarding the how Amazon name each new Fire HD, and who remembers Clippy? We do jest about the email inbox overflowing, but in all honesty the show would be a shell of its former self without your correspondence! So come natter with us at TechTalk@RNIB.org.uk (mailto:techtalk@RNIB.org.uk) and we'll read them out - and whisper it quietly... rumours around that the next show will be more focused towards emails, so now is a good time to write in! Until then, stay safe!

Amazon has solid tablets at really great prices. And they have just released a new version. PayPal's older credit card offering just wasn't that great. But the new one is definitely worth considering! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Executive Director of the Book Industry Study Group Interview starts at 5:19 and ends at 36:00 “With respect to blockchain, there's an opportunity to--I wouldn't necessarily say disrupt--but to create an alternative to the closed ecosystems that Amazon has with Kindle and that other online platforms have and to provide peer-to-peer trading as well as easier e-commerce networks for publishers. Your App Lady Show Notes Series 1 Episode 32 Welcome to series 1 episode 32 of the Your App Lady Podcast! All about apps and tech that I love and use every day. On each episode, I’ll talk about recent tech news, recommend apps that I use myself and leave you with a great tech tip. Tech News Amazon’s Fire 7 and Fire HD 8 tablets can now be used as hands-free Alexa speakers. This feature is currently available on the Fire HD 10. Amazon is expanding it to other tablets. Both compatible models, the Fire 7 and Fire HD 8, were released last year. Once the latest software update rolls out to the devices, you will be able to use Alexa’s full array of voice commands whenever the tablet’s screen is turned on. For more information: https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2018/4/4/17197730/amazon-fire-7-hd-8-tablets-hands-free-alexa-new-feature Featured App: Apps Gone Free Available for iOS devices (iPhones and iPads). I use this app daily to find high quality free apps. While every day hundreds of apps reduce their price to free for a limited time, many of them are not worth downloading. AppsGoneFree finds the apps worth trying out. Each app includes a summary and a link to the App Store. The app features 4-6 apps a day. Tech Tip How to Dispose of An Old Laptop If you can’t give away or sell an old laptop, here are directions on how to safely get rid of it. Step One: Back Up Your Computer Store your files on an external hard drive or back up your data using iCloud if you have a Mac. Step Two: Sign Out of Everything Sign out of all your applications and software. Make sure none of your login information is stored in your keychain or any other app or software on the computer. Then wipe your hard drive. Here's the full guide to deleting everything off your computer. Step Three: Recycle Your Device at an E-Waste Location. Apple Recycling Program: Apple accepts old devices online at any Apple store. If your Mac or PC has any monetary value, you'll receive an Apple gift card in the amount it's worth. Gazelle: Gazelle is another reliable buyer that will take your old devices. Similar to the process above, all you have to do is enter your laptop's serial number and ship it to its processing center using the prepaid shipping supplies they send to you. Best Buy: You have the option of dropping off your old laptop at any Best Buy store for proper disposal. Staples: If your computer has any value, you have the option of trading it in store for a Staples eCash Card, or sending it in through an online process. Goodwill: Drop off your laptop to any Goodwill collection center. According to its site, "One working computer given to Goodwill is worth 5.3 hours of career counseling." Find a local drop-off center in your area: Do a quick search to see if any nearby stores accept e-waste. Many manufacturers, office supply retailers, and even hardware stores will be able to take your laptop off your hands. Opening up the Amazon Fire HD 10 will tell you everything you need to know about it. It doesn't come in an immaculate white box, like an iPad or fancy Galaxy tablet, and there is no lid that makes that pleasant suction sound as you gently lift it, revealing a glass and metal slab so pristine it could part the heavens. Nope—my Fire HD 10 came in a cardboard pouch. Like a FedEx box, you simply tear a tab off and yank out your brand-new Fire. But hey, that's OK.
The guys ring in their 40th episode by looking back at some of the tech innovations and geek happenings from 40 years ago, umm Star Wars anybody?! They also touch base on news from Amazon and Google both having new smart home devices on the horizon, will Nintendo get in bed with Netflix and of course some fun movie news to finish up the turning 40 celebration! Weekly Riddle: Lovely and Round, I shine with pale light, Grown in the pale darkness, A ladies delight. CCleaner the latest software to get hacked It never seems to end as this time CCleaner by Avast has been exposed to malware by hackers. Netflix coming to the Nintendo Switch? Based on some reports, it seems like Netlix may be headed to the Nintendo Switch. But fans of the Nintendo handheld are split on if this is good or not. What do you think Souper Friends? 40 years ago the tech world was changing Taking a look back at what sort of tech was out there 40 years ago, 1977. It's actually a pretty big year for tech, gadgets and geekery! Amazon's latest tablet is also an Echo? With the announcement of the new Fire HD 10. Amazon has added the hands free voice services of Alexa to their latest tablet. At around the $200 mark, is this new tablet a viable alternative to the highly acclaimed iPad? Amazon is also looking at Smart Glasses See what I did there, “looking” at “Smart Glasses”. Anyways, it seems that Amazon wants a piece of that sweet Google Glass Pie. Though as of now they aren't looking at a screen for the glasses, simply a bone conducted Alexa voice assistant built right in. The Google Home Mini IF this ends up being a real thing, which we'll know soon since Google is set to announce it in early October, Google will be doing their best to take a potentially serious bite out of Amazon's bottom line. Blasting through some movie and tv talk, the guys discuss the new Tomb Raider trailer set to release in 2018, an intense looking survival movie called The Mountain Between Us starring Idris Elba and Kate Winslett, The Punisher dropping sometime soon, but Netflix is being tight lipped about it and of course the new Star Trek series that just debuted along with The Orville.

Senior Writer and Features Editor at Publishers Weekly Interview starts at 12:44 and ends at 32:05 "The fact that we have rapidly declining eBook sales from major publishers and that we see for two years running now in the Pew surveys that eBook readership is not growing is stunning, considering the vast offerings that are now available in digital format. I just hope that the publishers haven't, if not killed then wounded their golden reader, which is a reader that will read on any device, and certainly the data show they will read print and eBooks, toggle from one to the other. They'll buy more books, they'll check out more books. I think as reading becomes more pressured by other media, to hold back your power readers like that can't be considered a wise strategy any more." Rowing medalist, challenged reader trying a Kindle Interview starts at 14:43 and ends at 42:48 I remember walking home from third grade and throwing a workbook away, it was a book that I had made out of paper and was keeping notes in. I threw it in the bushes, because my teacher said, “You're supposed to take this home and get your parents to sign off on your assignments, that you've done them all.” I threw it away, and I said I'd lost it. because I didn't want to show that I'd not done the reading, because I hated it so much. I just didn't like it. I can do the reading; I just don't like it. And I still have that feeling today. Author of Substitute: Going to School With a Thousand Kids Interview starts at 8:44 and ends at 41:26 The thing that really hit me was, this is compulsory. None of these kids have a choice. Whatever the cutoff age is, they have a choice, but all of those earlier years they cannot just decide, “I don't want to go to school today” unless they had a very understanding set of parents or something. They have to go. And they have to get up really early. Often they're on a bus for an hour, and then all day long they're being told what to do. And some of what they're learning, especially in elementary school, is very valuable—reading, for instance, and arithmetic—really, really valuable things to know on this planet. Other things are often really a waste of time. That feeling of its being both an incredibly long day and a day in which a lot of it feels kind of futile—it's kind of a terrifying combination when you look at it from the kid's point of view. In this episode of Cost of a Coffee, the Prof and Brian have been playing CollectOrb, the brain child of Peter Daish that first appeared on the PlayStation Vita in May as part of the now defunct PlayStation Mobile programme. Now DaishGames have ported the title to Android and Amazon's Fire HD, meaning many more people can experience the shear frustration of rolling a ball around a maze in the dark.
Author of Shadow Work: The Unpaid, Unseen Jobs That Fill Your Day Interview starts at 21:13 and ends at 39:30 Becoming aware of shadow work enables us to prune away some of the clutter in our lives. Take, for example, surveys—the inundation of our time with surveys, requests for surveys. It seems you can't buy anything or go anywhere or receive any service without having a followup survey usually emailed to you to ask you, “How did we do?” And I would just encourage the citizens to throw those away if they don't feel like writing them. We are not obligated to fill out these surveys, but these organizations are preying on our time and asking us to do it. And that's the kind of clutter that you can prune away. [2:45]What did you learn from New Media Expo? People need to make sure what they say their podcast is about - is accurate. We come up with a great title, but it has nothing to do with the episode. Dave is ready to see people blow up the podcast bluebprint, and do something original. Podcasting For Free forced Dave to get out of his comfort zone. Make the beginning of your show great to get people sucked in. Its going to be interesting to see if people start growing their audience through podcast spots. Its gibberish until you put it into the piano. Likewise your RSS feed is just noise until you put it into software (like iTunes) to decode it. Cast Feed Validator is a great service to use to see if your RSS feed is valid 23:35 Podcasts.com Free Hosting DPodcasts.com a Good Idea? This is to a good choice for a primary solution, but as a secondary point of distribution it may be valuable. [25:30] How Should Politicians Use Podcasting? Dave feels politicians can use "behind the scenes" and explain why they are the better candidate (instead of ripping on the other candidate). [35:22] What Directories Should I Be Listed In? I recommend iTunes, Stitcher, and Tunein. From there go to www.podcast411.com and use the directory of directories. When you go to list yourself in directories have your artwork URL, your description and everything you will be asked in a document and copy and paste to speed up this process. iTunes watches your RSS feed, and your RSS feed is updated by your posts. [49:00] Why Do People Love SoundCloud? [spp-timestamp time="49:00"]Different companies have embraced SoundCloud and they appear successful because of associations. They are technically not as cool as they were years ago, and they still need to make money. Jim uses different services for different strategies. Some players look better in different places. If you have multiple websites you visit, organize the websites into a folder (as bookmarks) then you can right click on the folder and open all the websites in the folder with different tabs. [58:45] Subscribe on Android This is a great initiative from the folks at Blubrry to help make subscribing on an Android platform easier. The idea is you can make a button and if the person has the right app it wil subscribe. If they don't have the app, they will be prompted to download one of the approved apps.
