In the music business, Brian Eno is a name to conjure with. He's been the producer of tremendous hits by U2, Talking Heads, David Bowie, Grace Jones, Coldplay, and many other top artists. But he's also a conceptualist, nicknamed Professor Eno in the British music press, and a foundational figure in ambient music—a genre whose very name Eno coined. Amanda Petrusich speaks with Eno about his two new albums that just came out, “Luminal” and “Lateral,” and his new book, “What Art Does.” “One of the realizations I had when I was writing this book is that really the only product of art is feelings,”  Eno says. “Its main point is to make your feelings change—is to give you feelings that you perhaps didn't have before or did have before and want to have again or want to experiment with. So it seems very simplistic to say, ‘Oh, it's all about feelings.' But actually I think it is. Feelings are overlooked by all of those people who think bright children shouldn't do art.”

This technological gap created a constitutional crisis that would ultimately topple the Tokugawa Shogunate and usher in the Meiji Restoration of 1868.Jonathan Clements guides us through this pivotal period where Japan found itself facing what one historian calls "an invitation to an alien game" - forced to adopt international norms and institutions they never agreed to. Rather than becoming colonized like China or India, Japan's new leaders determined to become players in this global power game. They systematically studied Western nations, adopting what they perceived as the best elements of each: a German-style army, British naval technology, and aspects of French law.This selective modernization happened against a backdrop of growing militarism and expansionism, particularly toward Korea - strategically described as "the dagger at the heart of Japan." The 1894-95 Sino-Japanese War demonstrated Japan's new capabilities, but the subsequent "Triple Intervention" by Russia, France and Germany (forcing Japan to abandon territorial gains) created a humiliation that would fuel future aggression.Throughout this period, the Japanese government struggled with "gekokujō" - military insubordination where officers initiated "incidents" that expanded Japanese influence without authorization. Today, we are exploring a topic that doesn't get talked about much — the British tanks that ended up serving with the Red Army during the Second World War. We often think about the Soviet Union producing huge numbers of its own tanks like the T-34, but in the early years of the war—and even before it—the Soviets were looking abroad for armoured vehicles to strengthen their forces. Britain, with its long history of tank development stretching back to the First World War, was one of the countries they turned to.   On this episode of Unsupervised Learning, Razib talks to Bo Winegard and Noah Carl, the editors behind the online publication Aporia Magazine, founded in 2022. Winegard and Carl are both former academics. Winegard has a social psychology Ph.D. from Florida State University, and was an assistant professor at Marietta College. He was an editor at Quillette before moving to Aporia. Carl earned his Ph.D. in sociology from Oxford University. He was a research fellow at St. Edmund's College, Cambridge, before becoming a contributor to The Daily Skeptic and UnHerd, and a managing editor at Aporia. First, Razib asks Winegard and Carl about their respective cancellations, and the recent attacks on Aporia from the British media in particular. Winegard observes that many of the criticisms were muddled, as journalists struggled to get basic facts straight about who did what, as well as mixing up present associations among various editors with past ones. The two also address the change in the culture over the last few years, as cancellations seem to have lost some of their bite. Then Razib asks Winegard about the perception that Aporia is fixated on the third-rail of American culture: race and IQ, and its relevance to social policy and politics. Winegard talks about how he has long since said everything he has to say on the topic, but he still finds that the public conversation fails to address the possibility of cognitive differences between populations, and so keeps finding himself wading back in, to fill a gap in the discourse. Razib also asks the editors about their view of “cold winters theory,” which attempts to explain the higher IQs of temperate zone populations versus tropical ones. Then they discuss the disappointments of the MAGA movement, and its appeal to populist emotion. Winegard had hoped that despite its inchoate nature, it might have been able to pare back the radical excesses of the progressive cultural changes of the 2010's, but now he worries that overreach may up the chances that woke policies make a comeback with the inevitable political backlash in the next few years. Winegard also addresses his personal souring on reflexive anti-wokism, and Carl shares his own views from across the Atlantic, where Britain appears to follow in the US' footsteps, even if from an entirely different social-historical context. Winegard discusses the difficulties of maintaining a consistent heterodoxy in the face of tribalistic demands for conformity. Finally, they discuss the path forward for publications like Aporia that do not toe any particular party line.

Kit microsite delivering vital prevention information and advice.The PRmoment Award judges said: “Crisp and clear articulation of what you did, why you did it and what your campaign generated - both in terms of coverage but also in behaviour shift.” Winning Campaign Case StudyNigella meets GreggsGreggs is known for its playful tone of voice and position within British culture. Its biggest challenge at Christmas is to launch its festive menu in a disruptive way (when media is saturated with high-budget launches). Step forward culinary queen Nigella. The resulting campaign generated over 1,520 pieces of coverage from start-to-finish. The “ad” was hailed a triumph and Greggs reported that Q4 like-for-like sales rose 2.5%.The PRmoment Award judges said: “A strong, unexpected idea and execution with great post-campaign data, showing the true impact of PR when done well.”Winning Campaign Case Study:The V&A - If You're Into It, It's In the V&AThe V&A has over 2.27m objects in its collection. There's something for everybody so “if you're into it, it's in the V&A”. Hope&Glory offered nine people the opportunity to advise the V&A about its collections – enhancing its understanding of modern culture. The campaign reached 87% of the core audience and, of those exposed to the campaign, 76% said the activity made them think more positively about the V&A brand. Amongst non-V&A visitors, 40% said the activity made them think it was more relevant to them.The PRmoment Award judges said: “Huge results for a modest budget. Tapped into culture. This is gold standard”

"I'm an individualist." The Throbbing Gristle co-founder on extreme experimentation, difficult women and her new album, 2t2. As long as underground culture has existed, there have been pockets of resistance—people at the fringes who challenge societal expectations and create work that pushes against societal norms. Cosey Fanni Tutti is one of them. She's a founding member of the defunct British band Throbbing Gristle, a visual artist, pornographic model, solo musician and writer. Tutti, now 73, grew up in the English city of Hull, where she met like-minded performer Genesis P-Orridge. Together, they formed Throbbing Gristle and the collective COUM. Their activations and installations were, unequivocally, shocking. In one show, Tutti urinated on the audience as she swung naked across the stage. In another, the band performed alongside framed displays of her used menstrual pads. Throbbing Gristle's extreme experimentations flirted with the erotic and the grotesque, pushing the limits of sound and frequency. Their outsider approach to making music—and their erasure of the boundary that separates life and art—went on to influence a generation of creatives across genres, especially in early techno. After Throbbing Gristle disbanded, Tutti performed as synth pop duo Chris & Cosey with her husband and ex-band member, Chris Carter. Her work as a solo artist has blossomed in recent years. She published her memoir, Art Sex Music, in 2017. After turning 66, she also wrote two full-length albums and wrote another book, Re:Sisters, which explores the life and legacy of the late composer Delia Derbyshire who faced adversity as a woman in a male-dominated world, like Tutti herself. In this Exchange with with Chloe Lula, Tutti discusses her dedication to living alternatively, expressing herself by any means possible and her forthcoming album, 2t2, composed during a time of extreme difficulty in her personal life. The underground icon also talks about mastering Mongolian throat singing and her upcoming solo art exhibition in New York, which will display the pornographic photos she took as a model in her 20s. Across the EU, citizens already grappling with a cost-of-living crisis have been reacting with alarm to Donald Trump's threat.  Canada Caved and Begged Trump for Peace, And Somehow the Entire World Missed It If you did not hear about one of President Donald Trump's latest tariff-related victories last week, you have company. It escaped our attention, too. Of course, the global establishment has enriched itself on the current system of “free trade.” So you must look closely to find positive reporting from the establishment media on the effects of Trump's tariffs. According to Bloomberg, the economic advisory firm Oxford Economics calculated last week that the new Canadian government under Prime Minister Mark Carney has quietly adopted a conciliatory approach in the wake of Trump's aggressive tariff policies, resulting in a minuscule tariff increase of “nearly zero” on most U.S. products entering Canada. Tony Stillo, Oxford's director of Canada economics, explained. “It's a very strategic approach from a new prime minister to really say, ‘We're not going to have a retaliation,'” Stillo said in an interview. “It's a strategic play on the government's part to not damage the Canadian economy.”   In March, the Canadian government retaliated against Trump's tariffs by imposing its own 25 percent import taxes. Those taxes affected roughly $43 billion worth of American-made imports. Then, another round of Canadian tariffs hit U.S.-made autos in April. A series of exemptions from Carney's government, however, have effectively reduced those tariff increases to “nearly zero.” And that represents a significant victory for Trump.
