This week's podcast in on Cesare Lombroso, an Italian anthropologist and criminologist that had the unfortunate assertation that criminality was inherited and could be directly identified through physical traits. While we now know that some congenital abnormalities can affect brain function and lead to psychological issues, most of Lombroso's assertations have been proven wrong. The most unfortunate aspect of Lombroso's ideas was the inherent racism at the root of many of the ideas of what made someone physically, and thus mentally primitive. This led to a lot of the ideas later being adopted by the fascists and their thoughts of racial supremacy. While the ideas were incorrect and often hurtful, ironically a lot was learned over the years in proving them wrong.
--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/stefano-dambrosio5/message

Viaggio in Colombia. Today's ID the Future takes us to a conference in Turin, Italy, where scholar John West speaks about the roots of intelligent design, roots that stretch back to ancient Greek and Roman philosophers. In his talk, West also makes the case that design thinking was crucial to the rise of modern science, and he traces how Darwinism has eroded design thinking, fueled scientific racism, and undermined belief in human exceptionalism. West celebrates some of Italy's contributions to Western civilization but also calls attention to Italian criminologist Cesare Lombroso, who championed various racist ideas undergirded by Darwinian thinking, disturbing work that West learned more about when he visited the Cesare Lombroso Museum in Turin.
Today's ID the Future spotlights Darwinian racism, past and present. In this first half of a panel discussion at the 2022 Center for Science and Culture Insider's Briefing, Darwin Day in America author John West introduces the other panel members, teases an upcoming book, Darwin Comes to Africa, and discusses his experience visiting the Museum of Criminal Anthropology in Turin, Italy, where the work of infamous Darwinian criminologist Cesare Lombroso's racist ideas about evolution and race are on dramatic display. Then historian Richard Weikart, author of Darwinian Racism, debunks the popular media claim that white nationalist racism in America is a Southern evangelical phenomenon. Weikart shows that the most prominent white nationalists show little if any interest in promoting Christianity, Read More › Source

In the first episode of our Noisy Spirits series, we begin our exploration of the poltergeist phenomenon.Beginning with a ninth century case in Bavaria, we can see the impact that poltergeists can have on an individual. We started here because it is the first poltergeist case on official record! We then fast forward a millennium to Turin where Cesare Lombroso used science in solving a poltergeist eruption. Through scientific observation and experimentation, the case was solved in a few short weeks. This case helped to solidify the notion of person-centeredness, not place-centeredness during a poltergeist manifestation. This paranormal knowledge helped to inform the scientific investigation of poltergeist cases going forward. Finally, we wrap up with an introduction to some modern theory about poltergeists, including the term Recurrent Spontaneous Psychokinesis (RSPK) which will become a much more important term in future episodes in this series. This episode was researched, written and produced by me, Tim Woolworth. --------- Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/crimeandcomedy Youtube: https://youtu.be/rrv6wVt_diE Tutti i Podcast: https://link.chtbl.com/CrimeandComedy Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/crimeandcomedy.podcast/ Telegram: https://t.me/crimeandcomedy Sito: https://www.crimeandcomedy.it Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/crimeandcomedy/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/CrimeComedy Instagram: Clara Campi: https://www.instagram.com/claracampicomedy/ Marco Champier: https://www.instagram.com/mrchreddy/ Caricature - Giorgio Brambilla: https://www.instagram.com/giorgio_brambilla_bookscomedy/ Capitoli: (00:00:00) | Intro (00:00:36) | Sigla (00:00:50) | Ringraziamenti Patreon (00:02:23) | Chi era Cesare Lombroso? Photo: Sanctions and world trade: Storck Harbour scene. "Pre-crime, a term coined by science fiction author Philip K. Dick, is increasingly used in academic literature to describe and criticise the tendency in criminal justice systems to focus on crimes not yet committed. . . . The term embodies a temporal paradox, suggesting both that a crime has not occurred and that the crime that has not occurred is a foregone conclusion. . . . Precrime in criminology dates back to the positivist school in the late 19th century, especially to Cesare Lombroso's idea that there are 'born criminals', who can be recognized, even before they have committed any crime, on the basis of certain physical characteristics."
Today on our show we'll learn about Cesare Lombroso's biological theories of crime and the ways "the father of criminology" was the first person to make crime and criminals a specific area of study. Now, more than one hundred years after his death, there has been an upswing in studying the biological causes of criminal behavior once again. People will never tire of trying to determine the roots of a criminal's actions.

The body brings together a number of vexing questions: it is ‘animal' yet ‘human'; ‘natural' yet the ultimate object of cultural inscription? The part of the body that most represents us to others is its surface: for Victorians, skin, especially of the face and hands, was an important medium through which to read character and selfhood, a membrane that both divided the inner and outer worlds and served as a medium for the projection and interpretation of interiority. In this talk, Gilbert discusses Charles Bell, Charles Darwin and Cesare Lombroso's discussions of blushing and the emotions. She surveys examples from both literary and visual culture to show how Victorian perspectives on the skin aid our understanding of representations of the relation between selfhood, the material body and the emotions. Speaker: Professor Pamela Gilbert (University of Florida)

Well, here we come, waltzing down the street, getting hot and sweaty, with all this humidity. Hey hey we’re the Nerds yeah, and people say we look kind of funny, particularly Buck the big Boomer. Haha, admit it, you started to sing that in to the Monkey’s theme tune didn’t you, if not you just went back and tried it. We this week we bring you another awesome episode to listen to while you rest in the shade and enjoy a breeze on the long weekend.First up we are taking flight with Buck, Toyota, and Joby. No, Joby is not a new host, it is an aviation company that Toyota is investing in to increase its presence in the transport arena. Also this is the next step to having vehicles like in the Jetsons. Check out the drawings in the link, a tilt-engine vehicle that looks like a cross between a drone and a helicopter. This is seriously cool. Also while looking around at all the different transport tech news Buck also found some artists renderings of potential vehicles for space travel from Lexus. Wait till you hear what Buck and Professor think one of them looks like. Which is your favorite option?Next up DJ has a story about the Producers Guild Awards, in particular 1917. Want to know what movies won which awards, listen in. Also you can hear about the movie 1917, with some of the various story plot points to look out for. For those unfamiliar with it 1917 is a movie set in World War One. It is the story of a soldier and his friend trying to save the lives of 1600 British troops. There are some funny parts, but it is a moving drama based on stories told by the Grand Father of the Director Sam Mendes. DJ has also asked for your predictions for the Oscars and who you think should be nominated and win, so let us know on either: Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.Next up we have Professor bringing us an update on the saga of Crytek and CIG (Star Citizen). Would you believe that so far CIG have spent over $900,000 on this legal matter? Yep, for the company started on kickstarter and now sells space fleets for $27000 they are really going hard. Jones was a Welsh actor, writer, comedian, screenwriter, film director and historian. He was a member of the Monty Python comedy team. After graduating from Oxford University with a degree in English, Jones and writing partner Michael Palin (whom he met at Oxford) wrote and performed for several high-profile British comedy programmes, including Do Not Adjust Your Set and The Frost Report, before creating Monty Python's Flying Circus with Cambridge graduates Eric Idle, John Cleese, Graham Chapman, and American animator/filmmaker Terry Gilliam. Jones was largely responsible for the programme's innovative, surreal structure, in which sketches flowed from one to the next without the use of punchlines. He made his directorial debut with the team's film, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which he co-directed with Gilliam, and also directed the subsequent Python films Life of Brian and The Meaning of Life.Jones co-created and co-wrote with Palin the anthology series Ripping Yarns. He also wrote an early draft of Jim Henson's 1986 film Labyrinth, though little of his work remained in the final cut. Jones was a well-respected medieval historian, having written several books and presented television documentaries about the period, as well as a prolific children's book author. In 2016, Jones received a Lifetime Achievement award at the BAFTA Cymru Awards for his outstanding contribution to television and film. Speaker: Professor Pamela Gilbert (University of Florida) The body brings together a number of vexing questions: it is ‘animal’ yet ‘human’; ‘natural’ yet the ultimate object of cultural inscription? The part of the body that most represents us to others is its surface: for Victorians, skin, especially of the face and hands, was an important medium through which to read character and selfhood, a membrane that both divided the inner and outer worlds and served as a medium for the projection and interpretation of interiority. In this talk, Gilbert discusses Charles Bell, Charles Darwin and Cesare Lombroso’s discussions of blushing and the emotions. She surveys examples from both literary and visual culture to show how Victorian perspectives on the skin aid our understanding of representations of the relation between selfhood, the material body and the emotions.
In the early twentieth century, Robert Hertz, a French anthropologist, and Cesare Lombroso, the Italian criminologist, debated the causes and consequences of left-handedness. According to Lombroso, left-handed individuals were more likely to be criminals. Hertz disagreed. For him, to restrict left-handedness was to suppress individual expression. In his book, On the Other Hand: Left Hand, Right Brain, Mental Disorder, and History (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2017), Howard I. Kushner explores the fascinating and circuitous history of left-handedness. By looking at a wide variety of scientific research, as well as the cultural meanings attached to left-handedness, Kushner breaks down the binary between nature and nurture that has characterized most explanations of what some researchers have called non-right-handedness. Ultimately Kushner argues that discrimination against left-handers can be read as a barometer for a given society's toleration of diversity. Learn more about your ad choices. International accepted anti-black stereotypes pervading Australian racial thinking and race relations at the turn of the nineteenth century were revitalized and even transfigured by Social Darwinism and Eugenics. In its new formulations, in terms of environmentalist theories of human evolution, or in terms of biological heredity, it painted a restricted conception of whiteness that systematized the exclusion from the body politic of Aborigines, who were considered as impeding a full physical and symbolical appropriation of the continent as white space, Chinese, who "invaded the country", and not-so-white southern Europeans and Mediterranean people who were now coming to the country. The present essay will try to explore some aspects of the idea of whiteness emerging from the influential role played in Australia by the international debate on race from the end of 19th century to the 1930s and the inheritance of oldest and strongly grounded prejudgments against Blacks and of imperial ideas on the inferiority (or non-humanness) of not-white races. In particular, it will investigate the influence exerted on the Australian intellectual and political establishment by the theories of the inferiority of Southern Italians and black races articulated by the Italian criminologist Cesare Lombroso in the 1890s. It will contextualize these influences in the scientific orientations and outcomes of the medical field-studies undertaken by some authoritative Australian doctors of the 1930s. Contextualization will allow me to seize Italian-Australian differences and similarities in scientific as well as ideological orientations on race. In my survey, thus, the focus on the theoretical interchange existing between few Italian authoritative fin-de siecle and Fascist raciologies and the peculiar Australian intertwining between environmentalist theories and eugenics will allow me to stress the transcontinental nature of late 19th and early 20th centuries racialised knowledge. Cultural dislocations will be taken in account showing how European, and strictly Italian, raciologies, transfigured and situated in the Australian cultural and political context of the Immigration Restriction Act (or White Australia Policy 1901), could have been predicated to a conception of the Australian political subject as "purely white".Gaia Giuliani's (University of Bologna) seminar delivered as part of the 2009 Institute for Social Research Lunchtime Lectures.
