Ob im Naturschutz, in der Flüchtlingshilfe oder bei der freiwilligen Feuerwehr: Über ein Drittel der Menschen in Deutschland engagieren sich freiwillig für das Gemeinwohl. Das steht in der neuen Engagementstrategie des Bundes, die im Dezember 2024 veröffentlicht wurde. Dort steht aber auch, dass das Engagement sich verändert hat: Es ist spontaner geworden und weniger an Vereinsstrukturen gebunden, und zunehmend ist Digitalisierung ein Thema. Und zivilgesellschaftliches Engagement steht neuen Herausforderungen gegenüber: Es soll den gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalt stärken und zum Teil sollen freiwillig Engagierte auch einspringen, um den Staat zu entlasten, zum Beispiel bei der Daseinsvorsorge, also etwa bei der Unterstützung von Alten und Kranken. Ashley Varner of the Freedom Foundation on the financial boon to the Democrats; Looking around today, do we see evidence that the government fears the people? Why should they?Remember when Lois Lerner targeted Tea Party freedom activists as head of the IRS? She retired with a full pension and never bore any consequences for weaponizing the agency she led against ideological opponents.More recently, the Biden administration was fearless enough to pass the so-called “Inflation Reduction Act,” which included a provision for hiring 87,000 new IRS agents. To quote Jefferson again, in his complaints against the Crown, “He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.”They say the new agents will “mostly provide customer service,” and that we need to spend $80 billion in order to raise $200 billion in new revenue. Does anyone believe those claims?But there is another sinister feature of the move to bolster the most reviled of all bureaucracies. The IRS represents the single largest federal public sector union lobby, and 100% of its political contributions go to one party (guess which). Ashley Varner of the Freedom Foundation joins me this Sunday to discuss the perverse nature of public sector employee unions, which can lobby the government for direct pay raises – all at taxpayer expense. Varner will explain how the vicious cycle of political privilege is perpetuated by public sector unions and their boosters in government.The Freedom Foundation is a “Do Tank” based in Washington State that is leading a national movement of workers who are opting out of their union dues.We'll also discuss the unresolved IRS scandal of 2013, and the broader problem of public sector union influence – including the teachers union and their figurehead, Randi Weingarten. Finally, I'll talk about what the founders would have said about our current tax system, especially the Income Tax.

Blair Smith is Senior Director of the Center for Financial Markets at the Milken Institute, where he leads the Center's Access to Capital and strategic innovative financing initiatives to enhance economic and social impact.   Prior to joining Milken he was an adjunct professor at the Columbia Business School. He is the former Chief Investment Officer for the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone Development Corporation, a CDFI and was the Founder and CEO of Promethean AB Strategies LLC, a strategic consultancy focused on helping diverse led Asset Management firms achieve their goals. He is a member of the Real Estate Executive Council and is a 2019 Council of Urban Professionals (CUP) Finance Catalyst recipient. We start with Blair's upbringing which saw him split his time between Annapolis and Baltimore in Maryland  - a shift between big city and small town life.  He took what his friends describe as the "weedy path" into finance, starting out in journalism and ultimately moving in to impact investing.  We speak about the field of journalism and how it is evolving, and the lessons he learned there that he imported into his role in finance. How Vampire Bats Evolved To Drink Blood Vampire bats subsist solely on blood: In technical terms, they're what's called “obligate sanguivores.” And the three species of vampire bats are the only mammals to have ever evolved this particular diet. Living on blood is hard work. Blood is a low-calorie food with a lot of water volume, and very little of it is fat or carbohydrates. To survive this lifestyle, vampire bats have made numerous physical adaptations—stretchy stomachs, tricks to deal with high amounts of iron, even specialized social systems related to sharing food. But how, genetically, did they manage it? In bell jars and cabinet drawers and under glass display cases, colorful cicadas from species around the world participate in scenes of human-like activities—they read miniature books, arrange dried flowers, create textile art, converse with animal skulls, lounge on and in jelly jars, and more. It's all part of artist Jennifer Angus' exhibition “Magicicada,” an homage to our reliance on the insect world. I am very happy to introduce Daniel Ward this week, a fellow Bangor Alum and friend. We discuss different approaches to conservation - what works, what isn't and what direction could we go in. Change maker, big picture thinker and solution finder Dan is a forward thinking ecologist based in the UK. Dan has worked for the last decade across on the ground action, landscape scale projects and government policy and now works as a micro Think and Do Tank to drive the thinking and conversation around what successful conservation and ecosystems look like and how to get there. Over his time in conservation Dan has realised that conventional conservation thinking and models aren't working, and that large scale ecosystem restoration/rewilding, using nature based solutions and challenging shifting baselines is the way forwards. Dan is a systems thinker that helps people and organisations understand these big systems so that they can make decisions and choose sustainable solutions that help people and planet.
