For more than 50 years, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has been categorizing institutions in a functional but basic way–by the highest degree the institution awards and the amount of research generated by the institution. Even as American higher education changed significantly from the early 1970s, the classifications remained the same. Until recently! In this episode we talk about the classifications, how they were used and why, and what led to the revised classifications that were just released.  Key Takeaways:The Carnegie Foundation partnered with the American Council on Education (ACE) to conduct the first major overhaul of the Carnegie Classifications for Higher Education in almost 50 years.Over the three-year process, the team engaged thousands of stakeholders across the higher education sector and other relevant experts about how best to provide more information about an institution through the classifications.  For the first time, the Carnegie Classifications bring in information about the student (not just the degree) through the new Student Access and Earnings category. The American Council on Education prefers a three-syllable callout (“EY SEA EE”) rather than a one-syllable word (“ace”) when referring to the organization in shorthand. Host:Doug McKennaUniversity Registrar, George Mason Universitycmckenn@gmu.edu   Guests:Mushtaq GunjaExecutive Director of the Carnegie Classification Systems & Senior Vice President American Council on Education References and Additional Information:Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education® Classification MethodologyAmerican Council on Education

From the very earliest days of the epidemic, women got infected with HIV and died from AIDS — just like men. But from the earliest days, this undeniable fact was largely ignored — by the public, the government and even the medical establishment. The consequences of this blindspot were profound. Many women didn't know they could get HIV. But in the late 1980s, something remarkable happened. At a maximum security prison in upstate New York, a group of women came together to fight the terror and stigma that was swirling in the prison as more and more women got sick with HIV and AIDS. Katrina Haslip was one of them. An observant Muslim and former sex worker, she helped found and create AIDS Counseling and Education (ACE), one of the country's first HIV and AIDS organizations for women. And when she got out of prison, she kept up the work: she joined forces with women activists on the outside to be seen, heard and treated with dignity. This is her story — and the story of scores of women like her who fought to change the very definition of AIDS. This episode title comes from a Gran Fury poster. This week, Matt speaks with real estate leader Walt Rakowich, former CEO of Prologis and author of the new book, Transfluence: How to Lead with Transformative Influence in Today's Climates of Change. In the interview, Walt tells his career story, interspersed with leadership lessons along the way. Walt's true crucible as a leader came first when he was President and COO of Prologis and he found himself unaligned with the style and decision making of the CEO, leading to Walt's resignation from the firm…and then rejoining the firm, just months later, to restructure and rebuild the business after a crash that he had essentially foreseen. In our conversation, Walt discusses these lessons in leadership but we certainly recommend that you take a deep dive into his philosophy and practice of servant leadership in Transfluence.Prologis is a NYSE company and a member of the S&P 500. Prologis is a leading provider of distribution facilities and services with over $50 billion in assets and operations in the Americas, Europe and Asia. Walt was Co-CEO of Prologis and member of the Board of Directors from June 2011 through December 2012. He was CEO of Prologis from November 2008 through June 2011. He was a member of the Prologis Board of Trustees from January 2005 through June 2011.Prior to becoming CEO, Walt was the President and Chief Operating Officer of Prologis from January 2005 through November 2008. He joined Prologis in 1994. From December 1998 to January 2005, he served as Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer for Prologis. Prior to this position, Walt was the Senior Vice President/Director of the company's Mid-Atlantic region where he was responsible for expanding the reach of Prologis to the leading logistics markets in the Midwest and Atlantic states.Prior to joining Prologis, Walt spent nine years as a partner and principal with real estate provider Trammell Crow Company in Los Angeles. Before that, he was a senior audit and tax consultant for Price Waterhouse in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Walt received his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and his B.S., with distinction, in Accounting from The Pennsylvania State University.Walt currently serves on the board of directors of Host Hotels & Resorts, where he is the company's audit committee chairman and member of the governance committee; Iron Mountain Inc., where he is chairman of the audit committee and member of the governance and investment committees; and Ventas Inc., where he is chairman of the audit committee. All three are companies listed in the S&P 500. He also serves on the advisory council of Gender Fair. He has served as a member of the executive committee and the board of governors for the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (NAREIT), the primary industry group for REITs in the United States.Walt was appointed to The Pennsylvania State University Board of Trustees in 2014 and serves as chairman of the university board's audit and risk committee. In 2010, the Penn State Alumni Association named Walt a Penn State Alumni Fellow, a lifetime designation and the highest award given by the association, recognizing outstanding professional achievement. He also has served on the real estate advisory boards of the Smeal College of Business at Penn State, The Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University and The Kellogg Graduate school of Management. In addition, he served on the Global Leadership Council at Colorado State University.Walt currently serves as chairman of the board of Colorado UpLift and is a member of the board of the Alliance for School Choice in Education (ACE) and of PIVOT, three non-profits focused on educating at risk children in the inner city.About TransfluenceWalt Rakowich brings a real-world perspective to leadership that's based on experience, not just theory. Walt was CEO of Prologis, the world's largest owner of industrial warehouses and a critical partner to companies distributing products throughout the global supply chain. The company was near bankruptcy when Walt took over at the height of the Great Recession. While leading Prologis back to prominence, and in the years since, Walt realized leaders today must lean into timeless values and principles, but with a fresh perspective on the new realities of our leadership climates. The modern leadership environment exists at the convergence of three distinct and dynamic climates: the climates of access, diversity, and acceleration. On their own or in the aggregate, these climates produce significant opportunities and tensions that will challenge leaders for generations. With a fundamental understanding of these climates, leaders develop a selfless approach that withstands the toughest storms.Transfluence shows leaders how they can have transformative influence by overcoming their fears and pride, building transparency into their leadership, developing a strong core of authentic values, and passionately pursuing a meaningful purpose. When leaders do this, they seize opportunities, embrace challenges, and make their organizations and communities greater than ever. Learn more or order Transfluence here.

In her subsequent years educating other advisers and consumers, she saw again and again that conventional wisdom about women and money was flawed: It's not women's finances that determine their self-worth. It's women's sense of self-worth that determines their finances. And like that, a new philosophy was born.   In 2020 Ande published her first book with ForbesBooks, Fin(anci)ally Free! 11 Conversations to Have With Yourself About Life, Money & Your Worth. Mr. Rakowich has made several appearances on CNBC, CNN, Fox, Bloomberg and National Public Radio and has been quoted in publications such as The Wall Street Journal, Institutional Investor and Forbes magazine, on behalf of the real estate industry and Prologis In this episode, we talk to Ande Frazier (Behavioral Finance Expert & Author) as we discuss what we learn from our parents can determine how we deal with money, why she lets her kids learn some money lessons on their own, and more. Purchase her book here **More on Ande** Ande Frazier CFP®, CLU, ChFC, RICP, BFA™, ChSNC, CDFA® is inspiring women to take control of their money by breaking down the emotional, behavioral and societal barriers that prevent them from building strong financial foundations. Ande began her more-than-27-year career as a financial adviser but quickly realized that traditional planning methods didn't account for how much emotions factor into financial decision making. Ande's book is a guide to help women feel secure in their futures, to integrate self-worth and net-worth across generations. Episode 149: Leslie Klein on Elite Athlete Transition from Sport

If 2020 was a normal year, we would've just said good-bye to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics--and many athletes would be making big decisions about their futures. Since many athletes retire after an Olympics, we wanted to look at how elite athletes transition out of competitive life. To help us understand this topic, we talked with Leslie Klein, an Olympian who most recently was the Director of Athlete Career and Education (ACE) at the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee until the COVID-19 pandemic eliminated her position. She told us about the efforts of Team USA and other National Olympic Committees to help their athletes plan for life beyond sport. In our visit to TKFLASTAN, we read Phil Andrews thoughts on leadership during COVID-19 and heard how Kikkan Randall plans comebacks. Also, Team Canada has released its Olympic kit (we definitely have some thoughts about this, which are hindered by Alison's attempt to be more positive), and the Hungarian Olympic Committee is now branding itself as Magyarock. Womxn 2 Womxn: A Gender Leadership Podcast

In this week's episode we're talking about money! Equal pay! We learned about the reality of the gender wage gap for women of color. We had the opportunity to chat with Dr. Gloria Thomas, Director of the Carolina Women's Center. Guest Bio Dr. Gloria D. Thomas joined the Carolina Women’s Center as director on August 1, 2016. Before then, she served as director of the Center for the Education of Women (CEW) at the University of Michigan for 7 ½ years, where she led the Center in broadening the focus of CEW’s constituency from primarily adult women to women and nontraditional students with a particular focus on students who are underserved at U-M. Under her leadership there, CEW received a grant from the Ford Foundation of more than $380,000 for the Michigan Partners Project aimed at advancing economic security and mobility for Michigan women living in poverty, particularly women of color in Detroit and Flint. Prior to returning to CEW, Dr. Thomas served in two associate director positions at the American Council on Education (ACE) from 2000-2008, including in the Office of Women in Higher Education, and in the ACE Fellows Program, both where the foci of her professional duties were leadership development and enhancing career success for women in academe. Before ACE, from 1995 – 1999, she worked at CEW during doctoral studies, conducting research and coordinating the Women of Color in the Academy Project, a support network for women of color faculty. After graduating from college, Dr. Thomas rose to the rank of associate dean of admissions and director of minority student recruitment at Swarthmore College, her alma mater, where she earned a B.A. in English and Black studies from Swarthmore College, an M.A. in English from Villanova University, and a Ph.D. in higher education from the University of Michigan.
