I am having a cold, so my voice and breathing might sound a little different.    I take my notebook with me and I write a little diary about my life as a mom to a girl who just started school. There are many emotions involved for all of us and I also write about who I want to be as a mom and how I want to meet my growing child through the different stages of her life. With compassion and understanding. I want her to alway feel safe coming home, nomatter her days experiences and I want her to feel accepted and loved although she might have acted in a way that is not in line with our values. Love first - talk after.    I was very rebellious myself as a youth and I believe that we would all have a better experience if I was met with more understanding and less punishment. I might have done many of the same things, but maybe my image of myself would be more loving and I would heal faster, from the many hurts youth can bring, into adulthood…    I am not blaming anyone, I love my dad, and I know he did his very best and acted the best he could with the advice he would get from the world on parenting.  am just being aware of me having a different opportunity to approach parenthood differently as the world has changed and the ideas of what is good parenting has changed.    Well. After I write the episode I read it slowly. However, You will listen to the reading before the writing as I will organize them in that order, and in the end I put the pencil down and we can fall asleep together as I continue to record as I close my eyes and travel into the subconscious world of dreams. You might hear Jonas, Eirs dad in the far background, from time to time , as he is sitting downstairs talking.   Now, if you are not already in a good position, readjust yourself to be as comfortable as you can in this moment, If there are any outside sounds, please just ignore them as you soon will focus only on my voice and feel so very relaxed. Give yourself permission to fall asleep at any point during this episode, and know that it is also ok if it takes a little longer. If you havent closed your eyes, Slowly just close them now and allow the muscles around your eyes relax too. Let your face relax… your mouth and jaw. Take a few deep breaths in and out from your nose, and feel the breath traveling all the way down to your stomach, and giving you a sense of release as you let the breath back out. Good. En stor forandring skjer i livet og det er at jeg nå er mamma til en skolejente! Det har forresten gått veldig bra. Det var mye usikkerhet om hvordan det skulle gå, for alle; Jonas, meg og ikke minst for Eir som skulle begynne på skolen. Hun var nervøs og utilpass med det første og det kan jeg godt forstå. Jeg var også det, men jeg viste henne bare godt humør og forståelse. Jeg husker ikke veldig mye fra min første dag på skolen, men jeg husker veldig godt det øyeblikket navnene våre ble ropt opp og vi skulle gå til de ulike lærerne. Jeg syns læreren min så skummel ut. Men om jeg deretter bare gledelig gikk til skolen de påløpende dagene, det husker jeg ikke. Det er jo nesten tredve år siden nå! For min datter er det blandede følelser; om morgenen vil hun ikke at jeg skal gå og om ettermiddagen vil hun fortsatt være der. Det er jo et veldig godt tegn på at hun har kost seg i løpet av dagen Som forelder med hele hjertet investert i dette lille mennesket, så er det en lettelse. Selv om jeg ikke sitter hjemme og tvinner tomler mens hun er på skolen så tenker jeg på henne mye og ofte. Vi snakker også mye om hvordan vi kan bidra til hennes trivsel,trygghet og læring, både vi voksne sammen, men også med henne. Seksåringen vår!    Hun er virkelig lyset mitt og jeg er så veldig nysgjerrig på henne… hennes hode og tanker og hvordan hun utvikler seg fra dag til dag. Hvem hun kommer til å etablere sterke relasjoner til i årene som kommer og hvordan vår rolle som foreldre vil oppleves gjennom de ulike stadiene av livet hennes. Jeg har et sterkt ønske om å være hennes klippe. At hun vet at hun alltid kan komme til meg uten skam, og med det mener jeg at jeg ønsker å være en mamma med få fordomme. Jeg ønsker å støtte henne og vise henne tillit samt forståelse når hun handler uharmonisk med våre verdier Hun skal aldri være redd fo å komme hjem eller bli gjort arr av eller trenge å skamme seg. Det betyr ikke at jeg ikke vil at vi skal ha regler eller verdier i fokus.    Jeg vil prøve å møte henne slik som jeg ville og fortsatt vil bli møtt og snakket til. Og så vil jeg at hun skal ønske å ha med seg venner og kjærester hjem. Jeg vil være her for henne og hennes flokk! Og så vet jeg at dette blir en reise hvor jeg må være veldig bevisst meg selv og at jeg kommer til å snakke og handle uharmonisk med mine verdier og ønsker og da vil jeg gjerne at jeg husker å vise meg selv den samme empatien, forståelsen og tilgivelsen som jeg ønsker å ha lett tilgjengelig for Eir.   Ok my friend. Pero dado el tiempo que dedico al proyecto, el año pasado decidí que tenía que sacar rendimiento directo.Cuando ganas dinero con lo que te gusta, corres el riesgo de que el dinero pase a ser una de las motivaciones principales.En definitiva, BIMlevel tiene que ser semanal para que el impacto y el beneficio cuadren.Quiero tener tiempo libre, primero para no hacer nada, y luego para hacer otras cosas que también llevan mucho tiempo:Formarme en nuevos campos.Meterme en nuevos proyectos personales.Meterme en nuevos proyectos profesionales. Falta de motivación Soy una persona inquieta, curiosa, necesito estar metido siempre en cosas nuevas.Llevo con el podcast casi 4 años. Nunca he llegado a los 3 años en ninguna empresa. Me acabo de comprar mi primera vivienda, de segunda mano, a reformar.Reforma integral, toda la tabiquería interior va fuera.Me he encargado yo mismo (junto con mi mujer) del nuevo diseño y por supuesto todo en Revit.Quitando el trabajo colaborativo, trabajo con vínculos y supervisión, y el uso de masas y formas orgánicas, creo que he necesitado usar todas las herramientas "avanzadas" de Revit para hacer este mini proyecto (107 m²).Hubo una época que se escuchaba mucho que el BIM era para proyectos grandes, pero que para una unifamiliar era "matar moscas a cañonazos".No me imagino haciendo este proyecto en AutoCAD.Puede que no hagan falta CDEs, EIRs, BEPs, niveles de información, ISOs... Pero trabajar con Revit (si lo dominas) puede marcar al diferencia incluso en proyectos de reforma y obra nueva de unifamiliares, y seguro que para proyectos de decoración importantes, también.Vamos a hacer un repaso a todo el proceso, comentando el uso de cada herramienta. Estado actual y las fases No, he usado escaneado láser para un reforma, en la que, además casi todo es a demoler.Estuve tentado a usar la cámara lidar del Iphone 13 de mi suegro, y luego pasar la malla por Recap, pero no tengo tanto tiempo libre.Una foto de un plano con cotas del antiguo propietario enviada por whatsapp.Metes la foto en Revit, la escalas como puedes, y vas "calcando".Luego, cuando ya tuvimos las llaves, medidor láser BOSCH GLM 50 C para comprobar medidas.La herramienta fases me permite modelar todo lo que es estado actual como en una "capa" independiente.Pero también me permite seleccionar que elementos son a demoler y cuales se quedan.Esto es muy útil para montar planos de demolición:Elementos a demoler en rojo. los que se quedan en su color normal.Y también para obtener las mediciones de todas las partidas de demolición y una estimación de volumen de residuos y acarreo de escombros. Configuración de fases Hay que crear sólo dos fases: Estado inicial y estado reformado.Es un error muy habitual crear una fase de demoliciones.Las fases son para estados "terminados" no para tareas.Tendríamos duplicidad de medición si demolemos carpinterías y luego ponemos otras nuevas.El la fase demolición "tapiaría" el hueco, y en la fase estado final lo volvería a "demoler".Es muy recomendable crear filtros de fase, para ver que en las vistas puedas ver lo que necesitas en cada momento.Definitivo: muéstrame sólo lo nuevo y lo existente que no derribo.Demolición: muéstrame sólo lo derribado con colores rojos y lo existente que se queda con colores normales.Superpuestos: muéstrame lo existente que se queda con colores normales, lo nuevo en azul y lo derribado en rojo.Muy útil para comprobaciones y para hacer una idea del tamaño de los espacios nuevos, conociendo los antiguos.Son dos pestañas, en filtros creas estos filtros, y en modificaciones de gráficos eliges para cada caso si es rojo, azul verde... Trucos de modelado para demoler elementos Modelar ya "partidos", los elementos que no vas a modelar completamente.Un muro de 10 m, vas a demoler 4, dibujas uno de 4 y uno de 6m. O lo dibujas del tirón y usas la herramienta "Dividir elemento" antes de demoler.Si hay sitios donde vas a demoler alicatados pero vas a dejar el muro:El alicatado a demoler dibújalo aparte.Si vas a poner un alicatado nuevo, dibuja el muro existente ya con el alicatado nuevo. Probando ideas y las opciones de diseño Una vez tienes todo el estado actual perfectamente definido y demolido, pones la vista con el filtro de vista "definitivo", empiezas a dibujar y se te ocurren varias ideas, en mi caso:El baños más anchos pero menos armario en el dormitorio 1 y menos superficie en el dormitorio 2. o al revés.Separación entre inodoro y plato de ducha con muro hasta el techo o hasta 1 metro.Ganó el muro de un metro. Distintas distribuciones del Salón-Comedor-Solana.Solana más grande y algo menos de salón, o más estrecha con la secadora encima de la lavadora.La cocina...18 opciones (ganó la 14, pero con un especiero de 15 cm en vez de 20 cm)Cerrada, abierta, con isla grande, con isla pequeña, sin isla, con torre horno-micro, en un lado, en otro,...Porque era para mí. A un cliente le enseñas 3 o 4 opciones y ya. Recomendaciones con Opciones de diseño https://ivanguerra.com/085-revit-etapa-inicial/https://ivanguerra.com/061-rendimiento-revit/Las opciones, aunque desactivadas consumen tantos recursos como si fueran una parte más del modelo.En una reforma de 107 m² me lo puedo permitir.Muy potente para analizar alternativas, pero también para enseñarle varios "3D" a un cliente.La configuración es muy sencilla: Gestionar>Opciones de diseño>Nuevo conjunto.Luego en la vista, en al barra inferior seleccionas en qué opción quieres dibujar.También funciona para tablas.A la hora de montar un plano, duplicas vista y en VV dejas una opción fijada.Hay que crear tantos conjuntos como problema a analizar. En mi ejemplo creé 3:Posibles bañosOpción 1, 2, 3...Posibles cocinasOpción 1, 2, 3...Posibles solanasOpción 1, 2, 3...Me permite seguir avanzando en el diseño de cada zona por separado y también mezclar opciones de distintos problemas: cocina 3 con solana 2. Patrocinador: Meca BIM Volvemos enseguida para hablar de nuestro patrocinador: MECA BIM y sus servicios de outsourcing BIM. ¿Eres el BIM manager de una promotora, una constructora, un fabricante, una empresa del sector hotelero, retail, etc, entonces seguramente tengas un departamento muy pequeño (si no estás sólo), y habrá ciertos momentos en lo que necesitas crear un montón de familias, o auditar muchos modelos… Pues si ves que no das abasto, aquí puedes contar con la oficina técnica de MECA BIM, un equipo de expertos en modelado de cualquier disciplina, pero también en labores de coordinación, configuración y gestión de CDEs, elaboración de requisitos BIM y BEPs, plantillas… Y recuerda que, además, tienen unos precios imbatibles por el simple hecho de que en Argentina los costes son menores a los de Europa. Así que no te lo pienses, si necesitas outsourcing BIM, MECA BIM tiene la mejor relación calidad/precio del mercado. Entra en su web, que te la dejo en las notas del programa, y contacta con ellos. Enlace: https://mecarq.com/bim/ Colocando luminarias, IFC y Dialux Con la distribución clara, toca decidir dónde y en qué cantidad poner luminarias, y también los interruptores, enchufes, etc.Aunque Revit tiene plugins propios y de terceros para hacer análisis de iluminación, necesitaría tener las familias de luminarias bien configuradas con sus archivos IES y demás.Una solución muy conocida, potente y gratuita es DIALUX (no confundir con Dalux, el CDE/herramienta móvil para la obra).https://www.dialux.com/Todos los fabricantes tienen su catálogos ya creados para este software.Yo sabía que existía, pero no lo había usando nunca.Un par de vídeos en youtube y listo. Que se note que somos expertos en SW.Puedes importar IFC 2x3. Exporto desde Revit a este formato sin mayor problema, detecta incluso los espacios en Dialux.Dejo una vista 3D con el nombre de Dialux, para ir exportando distintas opciones.Te ahorras todo el trabajo de modelado.En Dialux hago 4 cosas:Cambiar colores de algunas superficies que en Revit no tenía configuradas y se veían en gris.Una pared gris rebota mucha menos luz que una blanca.Colocar las luminarias que quieres.Tiene un asistente que te hace una propuesta de distribución de luminarias y luego vas moviendo.Elegir las superficies de análisis y los lux objetivo.Darle al botón analizar, mover luminarias, y repetir. Puedo optimizar el número y ubicación de las luminarias para tener más iluminación en las zonas de trabajo de la cocina y baños, y menos en la zona de la televisión, por ejemploAdemás, de regalo, Dialux me ha servido para enseñar unos 3D muy chulos, sin ningún esfuerzo. Midiendo y el uso de piezas Llega la hora de montar planos y también sacar mediciones.De los planos no hay mucho que comentar:Apenas 10 planos, uso de filtros de fase y filtros de vista para poner algunas cosas con colores como los alicatados, y alguna vista en 3D para que se entendiera mejor algún detalle, etc.En este caso, no usé ningún plugin de exportación de presupuestos, entre otras cosas porque no tengo licencia.Además, sólo había 26 partidas que no fueran 1 unidad.Hice tablas de Revit y pase los datos a mano, también como forma de revisar.Lo más relevante es la tabiquería seca y los acabados.Tabiquería seca:Para la tabiquería seca si que modelé muros con panel normal e hidrofugo según tocara, y también dividiendo por tipos según montante cada 600 o 400 mm.Creé piezas, lo que me permitió tener por separado:m² y m de cada tipo de tabiquería según perfiles y distancia de montantes.m² de placas normales m² de placas hidrófugasAcabados:Crear tipos de muro distintos según el alicatado no tiene sentido, ni siquiera en un proyecto tan pequeño.Una vez tenía las piezas creadas, usé el parámetro comentario para indicar que modelo de alicatado era cada uno.Idem con los suelos, aunque aquí no usé piezas, sino que cada suelo era independiente.Para la pintura no modelé nada, simplemente seleccione:Todas las piezas de las placas que no llevaban luego alicatado.Las piezas de los muros existentesLas piezas de los falsos techos y cierres de falso techo.Todo en una única tabla de piezas.Para filtrarlas rápido en la tabla, cree un parámetro de para las piezas de Si/No.Duplicando la tabla anterior y filtrando por material, dejé las superficies de los muros y techos existentes que se quedan, para sacar la medición de "lijado". Conclusiones Revit puede ser tan útil en proyectos pequeños y reformas como en proyectos grandes.Las herramientas más avanzadas de Revit, tienen ese apellido porque no son las primeras que se aprender a usar, pero fases, opciones de diseño, exportar a IFC o el uso de piezas, también son muy útiles en estos pequeños proyectos. ¿Quieres escuchar otro episodio? Exporto desde Revit a este formato sin mayor problema, detecta incluso los espacios en Dialux.Dejo una vista 3D con el nombre de Dialux, para ir exportando distintas opciones.Te ahorras todo el trabajo de modelado.En Dialux hago 4 cosas:Cambiar colores de algunas superficies que en Revit no tenía configuradas y se veían en gris.Una pared gris rebota mucha menos luz que una blanca.Colocar las luminarias que quieres.Tiene un asistente que te hace una propuesta de distribución de luminarias y luego vas moviendo.Elegir las superficies de análisis y los lux objetivo.Darle al botón analizar, mover luminarias, y repetir. Puedo optimizar el número y ubicación de las luminarias para tener más iluminación en las zonas de trabajo de la cocina y baños, y menos en la zona de la televisión, por ejemploAdemás, de regalo, Dialux me ha servido para enseñar unos 3D muy chulos, sin ningún esfuerzo. Midiendo y el uso de piezas Llega la hora de montar planos y también sacar mediciones.De los planos no hay mucho que comentar:Apenas 10 planos, uso de filtros de fase y filtros de vista para poner algunas cosas con colores como los alicatados, y alguna vista en 3D para que se entendiera mejor algún detalle, etc.En este caso, no usé ningún plugin de exportación de presupuestos, entre otras cosas porque no tengo licencia.Además, sólo había 26 partidas que no fueran 1 unidad.Hice tablas de Revit y pase los datos a mano, también como forma de revisar.Lo más relevante es la tabiquería seca y los acabados.Tabiquería seca:Para la tabiquería seca si que modelé muros con panel normal e hidrofugo según tocara, y también dividiendo por tipos según montante cada 600 o 400 mm.Creé piezas, lo que me permitió tener por separado:m² y m de cada tipo de tabiquería según perfiles y distancia de montantes.m² de placas normales m² de placas hidrófugasAcabados:Crear tipos de muro distintos según el alicatado no tiene sentido, ni siquiera en un proyecto tan pequeño.Una vez tenía las piezas creadas, usé el parámetro comentario para indicar que modelo de alicatado era cada uno.Idem con los suelos, aunque aquí no usé piezas, sino que cada suelo era independiente.Para la pintura no modelé nada, simplemente seleccione:Todas las piezas de las placas que no llevaban luego alicatado.Las piezas de los muros existentesLas piezas de los falsos techos y cierres de falso techo.Todo en una única tabla de piezas.Para filtrarlas rápido en la tabla, cree un parámetro de para las piezas de Si/No.Duplicando la tabla anterior y filtrando por material, dejé las superficies de los muros y techos existentes que se quedan, para sacar la medición de "lijado". Conclusiones Revit puede ser tan útil en proyectos pequeños y reformas como en proyectos grandes.Las herramientas más avanzadas de Revit, tienen ese apellido porque no son las primeras que se aprender a usar, pero fases, opciones de diseño, exportar a IFC o el uso de piezas, también son muy útiles en estos pequeños proyectos. ¿Quieres escuchar otro episodio? Se presentó MAMBA en el EUBIM 2019 Qué es MAMBA Software de Mediciones y Presupuesto desarrollado por BIMmate en UTE con PrecioCentro.Web de BIMMateWeb de Precio CentroWeb de MAMBA3 Partes:Plugin para Revit con la que podemos hacer mediciones y presupuestos sin salir de Revit para nada.Aplicación de escritorio Mediciones y presupuestos completa para medir modelos IFC.App tanto para Android como para iOS, para tener el modelo y las mediciones en cualquier lugar, y poder certificar a pie de obra. Puedes configurar cómo se va a medir cada elemento.Van a sacar una biblioteca de familias ya configuradas.Esta configuración no se basa en parámetros que rellenamos. Seguramente usen el almacenamiento extensible Revit.Si no tienes o no quieres configurar las familias. puedes crear reglas de medición a nivel de proyecto.Estás reglas de pueden guardar y reutilizar en otros proyectos.Si un elemento tiene configuración, prevalece sobre las reglas a nivel de proyecto.No hay que exportar nada. Mediciones y presupuesto se hacen dentro de Revit. Una vez tienes estás configuraciones y/o reglas, las mediciones se generan automáticamente.Si el modelo cambia, las mediciones cambian en tiempo real, como una tabla de Revit. Podemos exportar a bc3, el motor del software está basado en bc3.También tiene un formato propio 4 veces más rápido y diez veces más pequeño que el bc3, y que soporta más datos.Podemos exportar a presupuesto, base de precios y certificación, a Word, Excel y RTF.La plantilla de Word o Excel la crea el usuario en el propio Word o Excel, y la exportación se adapta automáticamente a esa plantilla.Todo esto se puede hacer prácticamente igual con ifc en la aplicación de escritorio. Saldrá en otoño y si podrá alquilar por meses o años. Preguntas a José María Abellan ¿Exporta instantáneo, rápido o como presto? No hay exportación desde Revit al software de presupuestos. Revit ES el software de presupuesto. Lo de mediciones con un sólo clic, ¿es después de meter algún código como mínimo en cada objeto del modelo no? Sí. Los elementos del modelo pueden contener información inteligente sobre la medición, pero no en forma de parámetros. Si esto es así, y sólo en Autodesk Revit, la medición puede generarse autónomamente a partir de ella. Pero, adicionalmente, la información sobre la medición puede contenerse en reglas a nivel de documento, de modo que se pueda generar una medición automática de los elementos del modelo AUNQUE éstos no dispongan de información al respecto. Ello permite trabajar con una biblioteca de objetos preparada para medirse o con objetos que no. ¿Para que funcione "automático" es necesario familias específicas de BIMmate/PrecioCentro? No. Aunque, con el lanzamiento, vamos a publicar una biblioteca de objetos inteligentes para Revit con la información de medición ya incrustada, también va a disponer el usuario de la capacidad de incrustar él mismo la información de medición que quiera en el objeto que desee. Incluso si no lo hace y se encuentra en un modelo con elementos con información sobre medición y elementos sin ella, siempre podrá generar la medición automáticamente a partir de una serie de 'reglas' que controlan el proceso y que pueden exportarse de un modelo a otro. Por ejemplo, puede un usuario tener reglas para un chalet, para un hospital, para un hospital en Andalucía, o lo que sea, cargar en un proyecto las que quiera y medir con ellas. Si, al medir, se detecta un elemento con reglas propias, entonces se usa la información contenida en éste; si no es así, se usa el criterio de la regla, que se define a nivel de documento. En el fondo no es distinto a cómo Revit gestiona la visualización de los elementos: si a nivel individual en una vista se altera, se usa esa especificación de usuario; si no hay nada allí, se usa la configuración de la vista; si no hay nada allí se sube hasta la definición general de categorías. ¿Exporta a bc3?¿A qué otros formatos? El motor que hemos desarrollado se basa en el formato BC3, por lo que obviamente tiene una compatibilidad extraordinaria con BC3. Es capaz de leer cualquier formato BC3 desde la versión 1995 hasta la 2016. Además es capaz de exportar a cualquier versión de BC3, aunque, si se han creado paramétricos con versión 2012 o posterior con más de 4 parámetros (que admiten hasta 10), hemos tenido que caparlos para mantener la compatibilidad. Lamentablemente, BC3 no admite mucha información que hemos añadido, por lo que hemos creado un formato propio que es unas 4 veces más rápido que BC3 y que ocupa la décima parte. Cuando se genera información con nuestro formato se guarda, obviamente, toda ella, pero, al exportar, sólo se guarda la información compatible con BC3 de la versión que se haya seleccionado. ¿Genera un documento de word con el presupuesto? El documento creado (presupuesto, base de precios o certificación) puede guardarse en formato WORD, EXCEL o RTF. Además, detestamos la necesidad de crear plantillas en interfaces complejas. Directamente leemos el formato del documento de WORD que el usuario quiera y creamos el contenido siguiendo el patrón que el usuario haya determinado en el propio WORD. Es decir, la plantilla se crea en WORD o EXCEL, que es el software final en el que acabará la exportación, algo, por otra parte, totalmente lógico. Fecha de salida prevista y forma de comercialización? La solución se lanzará en otoño de este año en lo que a MAMBA library, MAMBA desktop y MAMBA revit se refiere. Antes de final de año lanzaremos MAMBA android y MAMBA ios. Entendemos el software como SAAS, por lo que usaremos el mismo sistema de licenciamiento que Autodesk. We all hear stories of highly lucrative angel and venture capital investments. But without an existing portfolio and a Rolodex full of Silicon Valley contacts it can be hard to identify the right opportunities. So what are the telltale signs of a founder or company that is destined to succeed? Or the warning signals of one that isn’t? And how do you meet them in the first place? To find out we spoke to Tristan Pollock who, after successful exits from his two previous companies -- Social Earth and Storefront -- has made the move into the venture capital world. Tristan is the entrepreneur in residence and venture partner at 500 Startups. 500 Startups is the world’s most active venture firm based in San Francisco with nodes and investments across the globe, with nearly 2,000 investments in their portfolio since starting out six years ago. In this episode we talk about Tristan’s successful exits from his two companies, Social Wealth and Storefront; his transition to venture capitalist and advisor to startup businesses; and what green and red flags he looks for when evaluating new investment opportunities. Entrepreneur in residence This is a title we’re seeing more often in the venture capital world, says Tristan. Typically, the entrepreneur in residence (EIR) will be brought in on a salary or stipend to assist the firm with their portfolio and in evaluating new potential investments. Usually, the firm will also be investing in the EIR’s next company. This is all a part of the 500 Startups program but in addition, their EIRs will spend time with their accelerator program, advising younger founders and companies on a weekly basis. The 500 Startups accelerator program Through this four month program, Tristan predominantly helps startups in three main areas: Growth For the first two to three months, the focus is on trying every growth experiment possible and on testing and iterating on every available acquisition channel. Storytelling In the last month or two, the focus shifts to how the startups are pitching their companies. This can be a challenge for founders at first because they are so deep in the weeds of their product that it can be difficult to take a step back and simplify their story. Investors need to be able to quickly understand what is interesting about them and what differentiates them from other companies. It’s also important to be able to communicate the problem or pain that a product solves. People need to feel a pain, says Tristan, in order to adopt a new product -- as an investor, or as an end user. Fund raising As part of the program, founders will be introduced to the investor network in San Francisco and coached through the process of finding funding. Bootstrapped vs. venture funded Tristan has experienced both forms of entrepreneurship. His first successful company, Social Earth, was self-funded. Whereas Storefront, his following venture, was backed by 500 Startups and went through their accelerator program. There is no one-size-fits-all route. Some founders want to maintain control of their companies and stay true to their vision for the product.   Others feel that there are skills that they need or a network they need to build, which they can only get access to through an incubator or accelerator program. Tristan describes the 500 Startups accelerator program as an important part of getting him and his company up to ‘San Francisco’ speed, as he calls it. Tristan Pollock’s entrepreneurial story Tristan is a Minnesota kid. He and his co-founder Erik Eliason bootstrapped their first business, Social Earth, with no outside funding and without an existing network. Before Huffington Post’s ‘Impact’ section, there was a huge gap in reporting positive news around the solutions affecting social change. Around the same time, social entrepreneurship, purpose before profit, and the ‘triple bottom line’ were becoming widely recognized terms. They launched Social Earth, a content business, which grew organically and became the leading source of news in the social impact niche and a strong brand, allowing them to be their own bosses and work on a project they really cared about. Three years in, they were approached by a number of potential buyers and sold the company to 3BL Media, which gave them the funds to transition into their next company, Storefront. After taking a break, the co-founders got back together. While walking the streets in Minneapolis and speaking to friends and family, they noticed a trend of vacant storefronts. It turned out that 10% of stores in the US are sitting empty. At the same time, the pop-up retail trend was growing. Many small businesses who couldn’t commit to five-year leases, were looking for short term rentals to hold art exhibitions, launch a fashion brand, etc. Triston and Erik saw an opportunity to create a marketplace to bring these two needs together. In the summer of 2012, they tested the idea in their local area as a basic MVP (Minimum Viable Product) while interviewing for AngelPad, a San Francisco accelerator. They were accepted into the program and at three days notice moved over to California and spent 10 weeks sleeping their four person team in a one bedroom apartment, hacking the first version of Storefront together. After the accelerator program, they reached demo day where they had the opportunity to pitch their new product to investors in just three minutes. Through networking at the event and setting up meetings, they went through a period of five investor pitches per day and were able to close a round of $1.6million in March 2012. They successfully sold the company in 2016 to a French company called Oui Open who was expanding globally and wanted access to the US. After this experience, Tristan wanted an opportunity to give back to the entrepreneurial community, and so came to join 500 Startups. Identifying early stage startups for investment With financial projections and limited quantifiable information, it’s more of an art than a science at the early stage. Tristan talks us through the flags he looks for. Chief among them at this point is to look at the founders and core team. One of the first and most obvious signs is previous experience and past successes. If a founder has proved that they have what it takes to execute by grinding it out on something they care about, then you can feel more confident about their next venture. Listen in to the interview for more. Red flags Tristan relies on pattern recognition to identify warning signs of an inexperienced or untrustworthy founder. Things like: Being very salesy in meetings; A combative relationship with their co-founder - perhaps they haven’t been working together very long; or A know-it-all character that isn’t easily coachable or is closed off to feedback. Instead, he would prefer to see a strong sense of empathy from a founder that can empower people and inspire diverse teams. Investing in startups for the first time 500 Startups offers a course through Stanford called VC Unlocked, which can be a good starting point. Outside of that, it’s important to start building a network around VCs and founders that you trust to get introductions to potential opportunities. When you’re starting out as an angel you will need to piggyback on other people because your check size is smaller. You’ll want to get in on opportunities early with founders that have some of the positive signals mentioned above. You may not invest in the first opportunities you are exposed to, but they will give you a valuable learning experience. In many cases, investing in startups is similar to investing in real estate. You may want to have 25-50 investments in your portfolio to increase your odds of one of them bringing a positive return. It’s important to appreciate the passion, grit, and resilience that founders need to display in order to create their companies and so fostering a relationship of respect between investors and founders is key.
