Summary:Have you ever noticed that it seems like these days everyone is a “#1 bestselling author?” If so, you've probably also wondered how this can be true. If it seems suspicious to you, you're right! Truth is, you can gain “bestseller status” without actually selling books. This is true because there are numerous ways to “game the system” and virtually every bestseller list is “gamable.” The unfortunate outcome is that bestseller status does not hold the gravitas it once did. The good news is bestseller status is only one component of a successful book, and you don't need to put energy and money into manufacturing phony bestseller status to knock it out of the park… In episode #135 of The Author's Corner, Robin reveals the truth behind the bestseller status that so many authors claim. She also discusses some of the ways people game the system, and shares some ideas about what author success looks like. Key takeaways:Why everyone seems to be a bestseller these daysHow Amazon changed the bestseller gameThe average number of books you have to sell to make a bestseller listWhy bestseller status doesn't mean as much anymoreStrategies that some people use to game the systemHow to determine if bestseller status is really important for youAnd more!Resources mentioned in this episode:New York Times Best Sellers listUSA TODAY's Best-selling BooklistAbout Robin Colucci:Robin Colucci is the principal founder of World Changing Books. WARNING!!!! This episode contains a couple spoilers for Across the Spiderverse, skip to 6:12 if you want to miss those.THAT IS ALL!!!!Apropos of nothing, here is how you play Solitaire according to bicyclecards.comThe PackVirtually all Solitaire games are played with one or more standard 52-card packs. Standard Solitaire uses one 52-card pack.Object of the GameThe first objective is to release and play into position certain cards to build up each foundation, in sequence and in suit, from the ace through the king. The ultimate objective is to build the whole pack onto the foundations, and if that can be done, the Solitaire game is won.Rank of CardsThe rank of cards in Solitaire games is: K (high), Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, A (low). The DealThere are four different types of piles in Solitaire:The Tableau: Seven piles that make up the main table. The Foundations: Four piles on which a whole suit or sequence must be built up. In most Solitaire games, the four aces are the bottom card or base of the foundations. The foundation piles are hearts, diamonds, spades, and clubs. The Stock (or “Hand”) Pile: If the entire pack is not laid out in a tableau at the beginning of a game, the remaining cards form the stock pile from which additional cards are brought into play according to the rules. The Talon (or “Waste”) Pile: Cards from the stock pile that have no place in the tableau or on foundations are laid face up in the waste pile.To form the tableau, seven piles need to be created. Starting from left to right, place the first card face up to make the first pile, deal one card face down for the next six piles. Starting again from left to right, place one card face up on the second pile and deal one card face down on piles three through seven. Starting again from left to right, place one card face up on the third pile and deal one card face down on piles four through seven. Continue this pattern until pile seven has one card facing up on top of a pile of six cards facing down. The remaining cards form the stock (or “hand”) pile and are placed above the tableau. When starting out, the foundations and waste pile do not have any cards. The PlayThe initial array may be changed by "building" - transferring cards among the face-up cards in the tableau. Certain cards of the tableau can be played at once, while others may not be played until certain blocking cards are removed. For example, of the seven cards facing up in the tableau, if one is a nine and another is a ten, you may transfer the nine to on top of the ten to begin building that pile in sequence. Since you have moved the nine from one of the seven piles, you have now unblocked a face down card; this card can be turned over and now is in play.As you transfer cards in the tableau and begin building sequences, if you uncover an ace, the ace should be placed in one of the foundation piles. The foundations get built by suit and in sequence from ace to king.Continue to transfer cards on top of each other in the tableau in sequence. If you can't move any more face up cards, you can utilize the stock pile by flipping over the first card. This card can be played in the foundations or tableau. If you cannot play the card in the tableau or the foundations piles, move the card to the waste pile and turn over another card in the stock pile.If a vacancy in the tableau is created by the removal of cards elsewhere it is called a “space”, and it is of major importance in manipulating the tableau. If a space is created, it can only be filled in with a king. Filling a space with a king could potentially unblock one of the face...

On April 13, 2022, in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Lawfare Editor in Chief Benjamin Wittes conducted his first “special military operation” at the Russian embassy in Washington, DC. It involved 14 theater stage lights that Wittes and other activists used to project images of the Ukrainian flag onto embassy walls. Since then, Wittes's special military operations have garnered increased attention and become more complex—technically and diplomatically. In his conversation with Katherine Pompilio, one of Lawfare's associate editors and this week's Chatter guest host, Wittes talks about the genesis of these special military operations, what it's like conducting international negotiations with Russian diplomats via the U.S. Secret Service, the international law of light protests, how a paper mache washing machine is involved in all of this, his career, his other projects, and more.Works mentioned in this episode:Ben's Substack Dog Shirt DailyThe video Defect and Repent: A Laser PoemThe video "It's Almost Like the Russians Don't Negotiate in Good Faith": A Video Parable. The video U.S. Ukrainian Activists Presents Umbrella BoyThe podcast #LiveFromUkraine: Katya Savchenko Survived Bucha—and Wrote About ItThe Washington Post article “Activists train spotlight of Ukrainian flag on Russian Embassy”The video of the spotlight cat and mouse gameThe work of Robin BellChatter is a production of Lawfare and Goat Rodeo. It's time to unleash our newly acquired weapons on the 3-5 Bears, who have been red hot on offense over their last two games, defeating the Patriots 33-14 and putting up 29-points against a very good Cowboys defense in a losing effort. “When you compare, you lose.” It's really as simple as that. Comparing adds nothing to your life or anyone else's because your experience is yours and yours alone. Not your parent's experience, not your teachers' experience, not your best friend's experience. So, what would it really look like to live out a life without comparing?Colin Cass, an Associate Certified Coach at Parent Coach Professionals, is a great example of what it looks like to stick to your own unique experience. Unlike many, Colin knew that he wanted to make a big difference at an early age. Growing up in a Therapeutic Young Adults Program allowed Colin to be exposed to the therapeutic world, getting a first hand look at what it would be like to work there himself. In fact, his first job was at a program and he hasn't let anything stop him from continuing down that path ever since. Now, you can find Colin living out his purpose as a Young Adult & Parent Coach. In this episode of Success is Subjective, Colin joins Joanna to share his journey growing up in a Therapy Program, to paving his own path and making his own name in the therapy world. In Colin's story you'll see that you don't need the best school or the biggest dream, to get to your own sense of success and purpose. Listen in to gain insight on how Colin managed to fully step into what he loves with little money and a vision. What You Will LearnWhat it was like growing up on a Therapeutic Program as a kidHow his environment helped him decipher what to do with his life at an early ageColin's first job at the therapeutic programHow helpful going to a smaller college was for ColinThere's no such thing as a traditional college experienceWhen Colin decided to start coaching Colin's time at College Excel for 6 years When Colin started at Parent Coach ProfessionalsThe comparison gameThe importance in allowing your child to experience discomfortConnect with Colin CassParent Coach ProfessionalsCall or text 541-610-8109 Email colincass753@gmail.com Connect with Joanna Lilley Success is Subjective WebsiteSuccess is Subjective PatreonLilley Consulting WebsiteLilley Consulting on Instagram Lilley Consulting on Facebook Success is Subjective on Apple PodcastSuccess is Subjective on Google PodcastSuccess is Subjective on AmazonSuccess is Subjective on Tune in RadioSponsored by: College AlternativeEmail joanna@successissubjective.org
What would happen if a current NBA coach ran players until they threw up or fell over in pre-season training camp? How would today's All-Stars react to a “no layups” policy that left them on the ground during drills? There'd be big trouble now, but back in the 90s, Pat Riley made New York Knicks practices look like Navy SEAL Hell Week, and opponents feared playing in Madison Square Garden. This toughness is not only traced back to Riley's upbringing in gritty Schenectady, but also to his own playing days for Kentucky and in the NBA. Then there was the roughing up that the Boston Celtics gave Riley's Lakers in their seesaw battle for mid-80s supremacy. All three came to bear when Riley left the Showtime Lakers and molded the Knicks into the toughest team in pro basketball history. Not merely tough guys, the Knicks made it to the Finals twice, pushed Jordan's Bulls to seven games, and had legendary rivalries with Reggie Miller's Indiana Pacers and Miami Heat. A decade before, it was the Celtics who ruled the East, with a combination of front-line toughness and the unparalleled skill of Larry Bird. When Bill Walton joined the team and was finally able to put in a full injury-free season, Bird, McHale, and co made it to the top of the NBA mountain one last time. Chris Herring and Dan Shaughnessy chronicled these eras in their fascinating books Blood in the Garden and Wish It Lasted Forever. In this episode, they share: How Kevin McHale clotheslining Kurt Rambis in the 1984 Finals galvanized Pat Riley's approachHow Larry Bird called MJ the greatest player he'd ever seen before he turned into the GOATThe time Larry Bird made a bet that he could bank a 3-point shot in during a gameThe conduit that connected the 80's Celtics with the 90's Knicks How Charles Oakley, Anthony Mason, Patrick Ewing and the 90s Knicks pushed Michael Jordan's Bulls to the brink and almost won an NBA championshipWhy the Knicks' failure to win a title in the 90s obscures how great they really wereThe theory that Doc Rivers provided to explain how Pat Riley contributed to John Starks going 2/18 in the 1994 NBA Finals game 7What direct player access did to enhance NBA reporting, and why it might be gone foreverRead the full stories of the 90s Knicks in Chris's book Blood in the Garden and follow him on Twitter. If you're a single mom, or even a single dad, it may feel like you're taking three steps forward and two steps back in whatever you set your hand to do. Maybe there's more month at the end of your money. Maybe you're overwhelmed with trying to do it all. Helpful vs harmful mindset work is a critical distinction to make for anyone interested in real change. Too many of the problems our society faces are framed as individual issues and placed on individuals to solve. First, this fails to address the real issues and instead perpetuates them. Second, it has developed a billion-dollar industry that feeds on itself. Mindset work IS powerful and CAN make a huge difference in your life. The key is to know the difference between individual thought patterns and systemic dynamics. When you stop accepting the blame for systemic issues you can more effectively create change in your life and in the systems you're a part of.In this episode of Unlimited, I explore how to spot harmful mindset stories and instead engage helpful mindset work. Some of what I talk about in this episode includes:The difference between what is and isn't mindsetOver-individualism and pathologizing stressThe false binary of empowered or victimizedReleasing the blame gameThe power of perception and accessing choice LINKS REFERENCED IN THIS EPISODE:You Were Born for This by Chani NicholasStolen Focus by Johann Hari Toxic Positivity EpisodeYou're More Than Your Personality Test EpisodeThe Faux Revolution of Mindfulness article Why Your Workplace Might Be Killing You article Other recommended episodes:No, You're Not Crazy EpisodeUnderstanding Your Stress Language EpisodeIf you found this episode helpful, please share it!You can tag me on social: @unlimitedcoachval Want to share your thoughts or have questions? You know as well as I do that leads are worth NOTHING if you can't convert! They cost money and you get nothing back. But Tristan Ahumada is an expert at connecting and conversion and in this episode, and he's here to take me through the steps he uses to not just convert, but convert RELIABLY from Facebook and Google pay-per-click ads. Most of us have a split of business where up to 80% of our business comes from repeats and referrals, but for Tristan, it's more like around 35%! His remaining business comes from converted online leads, and he does it WITHOUT buying leads from Realtor.com or Zillow. I asked him to lay out exactly how he does it, and the first thing we discussed was connecting with people and understanding personalities. If you haven't taken a DISC course, do it now! Understanding your leads' personalities is key to conversion, and Tristan and I look at a couple examples of how (and why) it works. Once we've got that down, it's time to talk specifics, and Tristan walks me through exactly what he does when a lead comes in. He covers everything, from how long it takes to call that lead, to how long it takes to follow up, and what to say. We even talk about how to deal when you're having an off day!Next, Tristan explains why he went cold turkey and stopped using both Realtor.com and Zillow for leads. When he decided to leave both sites, 66% of his business came from the two of them, and he had to make it up from somewhere! He talks me through where he made that business up.We finish off by talking about how to build trust with a client, once you've made that initial connection. We talk about the best way to communicate (Text? Facebook Messenger? E-mail?) and how you know when someone really trusts you. Finally, we talk about stories, and why telling a good, authentic story, will get a lead to pay more attention to you and engage more quickly.Today's Topics:Understanding personalities using the DISC methodWhy it's important for agents to tailor communications to their leads' personalitiesHow to incorporate different personality types into automated response systemsWhat to do when a lead comes in and you're off your gameThe worst way an agent can respond to a new leadTristan's tried and true method for following up on leadsWhy it's key to capture buyers when they're emotionalThe best methods of connecting with leadsWhy we pay more attention when someone tells us a storyConnect with Tristan Ahumada and the Lab Coat AgentsIf you're not already a member, have a look and join the Lab Coat Agents group on Facebook, the largest real estate agent group in the US.

Retailers dug deep and found their courage this year. Some were pushed as COVID-19 escalated while others took initiative early-on. Either way, none had to go it alone. Retailers' in-house capabilities and acquired assets are being augmented by a slew of third-party providers. The insular, less-is-more approaches of retail's past are being replaced by collective effort, expansive outreach, and dynamic decision-making. That's great news for suppliers and solution providers that play well with others and master the art of portfolio positioning. In this episode, Carol gives the rundown on the proliferation of portfolio approaches across retail and how to shift your strategy to take full advantage. In this episode you'll learn:Why winner-takes-all is a losing gameThe three pillars of portfolio positioningHow strugglers and strivers will accelerate acquisitionsWhy brand exclusives are so 2005
