This is the final episode of the Let's Think Digital podcast in its current form. I've been thinking a lot about transitions recently. Last month, I had the honour of being asked to serve as Vice President of Learning and Leadership at the Institute of Governance. The IOG is a not-for-profit, non-partisan organization that I've worked with for a number of years that does important work to advance good public governance. Its mission is needed now more than ever as governments are under increased expectations to modernize and evolve to meet the moment. I'm excited to take on this challenge and bring my work from Think Digital under IOG's banner. With this change, it seemed like the right time to think about the future of this podcast as well. It has been a really amazing experience hosting the podcast these past three seasons and I'm very proud of what we've been able to produce and share with our broader community through it. The goal was always to help spark greater awareness and more conversations about what it means to have a modern, effective government in a digital world. I feel like we've been able to help move this discussion forward. I'm also heartened that increasingly others are raising these issues and adding their voices to the mix. However for me personally, this felt like the right time to bring this particular iteration of the podcast to a close for now.So on this final episode, I wanted to share my thoughts about transitions. Not just for me personally, but also about the transition that institutions and society are facing in this current moment of uncertainty and change we are all in. And of course, I wanted to take the time to thank all of you for joining us on this journey over the last few years. It's been an absolute joy and pleasure to bring you these conversations and I'm so grateful for our growing audience of thousands of people from across Canada and dozens of countries around the world. Please stay subscribed and engaged, as I do hope that we will continue to be able to bring you content and perspective from time to time from myself and our colleagues in the digital government ecosystem. Finally my sincere thanks to our team and everyone who has contributed to building and producing Let's Think Digital over the past few years. In particular I want to thank our producer (and my friend) Wayne Chu, as without his hard work and dedication none of this would have happened. My sincerest thanks again, and as always, let's keep thinking digital!-Ryan Androsoff, Host of Let's Think DigitalWatch on YouTubehttps://youtu.be/bSuHinHC4Ps?si=Apa0EuQcQudH-isbRelated LinksRyan on CBC Radio's The Current with Matt Galloway talking about Estonia's digital transformation and lessons for CanadaRyan on Derek Alton's Civic Punks talking about why Canada has declined in international rankings around digital governmentRyan on the GovMaker podcast with Nick Scott and Jason Pearman talking about his career journey and advice on how to innovate in governmentKathryn May's The Functionary newsletter
International assistance and aid can help bring people out of poverty, build peace and security, and drive economic prosperity. For Canada, it's also a major source of its soft power globally. In fact, Global Affairs Canada delivers around $15 billion dollars a year in international assistance, of which approximately $6 billion is delivered through what is known in the federal government as “Grants and Contributions” to non-governmental agencies, charities, and other partners around the world. And while the amount and form of international aid given by Canada can sometimes be a divisive political topic and a difficult policy challenge, it's fair to say that everyone wants to see those international assistance dollars used as effectively as possible. So why are we talking about international aid and assistance on Let's Think Digital? There's a really interesting digital transformation project happening right now at Global Affairs Canada. This multi-year initiative, being undertaken in partnership with the public interest tech non-profit, Code for Canada, is hoping to transform how Global Affairs administers its Grants and Contributions programs. The goal is to completely modernize what have traditionally been outdated, siloed, manual processes, leading to more effective international assistance programs. It's a pretty interesting project that has aspects of many common challenges we see in government digital transformation. To tell us all about it, we spoke to Brandon Lee, Director General of the Grants and Contributions Transformation Initiative at Global Affairs Canada, and Dorothy Eng, CEO of Code for Canada and friend of the podcast. We spoke to them last November on site at the FWD50 Conference in Ottawa.Watch on YouTubehttps://youtu.be/J8R0zES1COE?si=lFMGqzMU99MQA7HqRelated LinksGlobal Affairs Canada Grants and Contributions Transformation InitiativeRisk Appetite Hackathon ReportCode for CanadaChapters00:00 Introduction02:01 Brandon Lee and Dorothy Eng03:37 Challenges in Grants and Contributions09:43 Code for Canada's Role in the Transformation15:37 Implementing Agile in Government23:36 Expected Outcomes and Success Metrics29:45 Digital Diplomacy and Broader Impacts32:43 Conclusion and Closing Remarks
Live on location from the FWD50 conference! In the most recent United Nations e-government rankings Canada has dropped from a high of #3 in 2010 down to #47. We are stalled out while other countries pass us by. There is a real question from many in public service about whether senior leaders have the necessary digital era competencies to get us back to the top of the rankings again. That's why the team at Think Digital ran a workshop at this year's FWD50 conference called "What I Wish My Boss Knew About Digital" to spark discussion and reflection on what it will take to build up the digital competencies of the public service. On today's episode, Ryan kicks-off the conversation with this year's FWD50 hosts, Alistair Croll and Hillary Hartley, about what they were hearing on the conference floor. They talk about how Canada's decline in global e-government rankings is a pervasive theme for participants, and also the importance of events like FWD50 to reenergize those working to spark change. Ryan then has a conversation with Meghan and Nick from the Think Digital team for a debrief on what they heard at the workshop, including the continued importance of getting senior leaders to understand foundational aspects of the technologies that impact so much of our lives in today's world. Let's Think Digital is back for Season Three! We've heard from experts and leaders in digital modernization about how new technologies have the potential to redefine the way government works in the modern era. From new technologies like artificial intelligence and virtual reality to policy issues like procurement and incentivizing innovation. And we talked about how it seems like we're stuck in the mud when it comes to digital government in Canada. There's a reason why we've fallen from third in the United Nations global e-government ranking to 47th. We heard about projects stalling, innovation labs shuttered, and low morale and burnout all across the public sector. So on this, our third season of Let's Think Digital, we're going to talk about how we get unstuck. How do we get past the seemingly intractable bureaucracy? And what does success really look like? Season Three of Let's Think Digital. Coming out later this Fall. In this fifth installment in our ongoing Digital Dangers series, we confront one of the most troubling topics in the digital age: pornography. Although pornographic material has been around for literally thousands of years, never before in human history has it been so widely disseminated and easily accessible. The pornography industry, which generates tens of billions of dollars in annual revenue, profits off the addictive nature of this imagery while preying on the young. While Catholics are likely familiar with the grave moral issues surrounding this, they may not be fully aware of the psychological, emotional, and spiritual damage that this inflicts. Further, addiction to pornography can have long-lasting social effects, including breaking apart marriages, inhibiting interpersonal relationships, and standing as an impediment to religious or priestly vocations.View on YouTube >>Support the SSPX Podcast with 1-time or Monthly Donation >>Digital Dangers Full Series: https://sspxpodcast.com/digital-dangers/View all our episodes, including the Crisis in the Church Series >>Subscribe to the SSPX YouTube channel here >> SSPX News Website: https://fsspx.news/enVisit the US District website: https://sspx.org/enWhat is the SSPX Podcast? The SSPX Podcast is produced by Angelus Press, which has as its mission the fortification of traditional Catholics so that they can defend the Faith, and reaching out to those who have not yet found Tradition. If you haven't heard of FWD50, you should! It's one of the premiere conferences on digital modernization in government and exists to help answer one vital question: How do we use technology to make society better for all? Many of this season's podcast conversations were recorded on location at the conference in Ottawa last November. On this episode of Let's Think Digital you are going to get an opportunity to hear directly from some of the participants in last year's conference. We had set-up a Speakers' Corner booth where we invited anyone at FWD50 who wanted to share their views on what their hope for the future of digital government is and what they think is stopping us from getting there. We kick-off this episode with a wonderful conversation with two of the key founders and organizers of FWD50, Alistair Croll and Rebecca Croll. They talk about what it's like to organize the conference, highlights from the 2023 event, and give us a sneak peek of what they have in store for the 2024 edition and why you should go.Make sure to fill out the 2024 FWD50 content survey and help shape the agenda!Learn more about FWD50 at: https://www.fwd50.com Finally a big thanks to Amy Kirtay, Andy Best, Amanda Bernardo, Liz Christie, Charles Finley, Dea De Jarisco, Roy Nader, Derek Alton, Urooj Qureshi, Pascale Elvas, James Duncan, Jeff Outram, and Lewis Eisen for appearing on the podcast as part of our Speakers' Corner segment!Watch on YouTubehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHlB3ujyh6EChapters00:04 Introduction01:27 Alistair Croll and Rebecca Croll30:50 Who are you and why are you at FWD50?33:23 What is your vision for government in 2030?36:55 What are the barriers to get there?40:58 Conclusion
As digital technologies become increasingly embedded in the fabric of the built environment, there are real questions about whether our cities, where 8 out of 10 North Americans live, are truly ready to be digital or smart cities. Do we have the right levels of transparency for citizens to know what data is being collected, how, and for what purpose? And are governments ready to use data and technology to improve and modernize our public institutions? This week, we talk to two amazing guests about these questions.First up is Jacqueline Lu. She is the President and Co-Founder of Helpful Places, a social impact enterprise that is working to ensure that places we live and work in, and the technologies within them, are helpful and empowering for people and their communities. In this segment, we talk to Jacqueline about her contention that, with all of the digital technologies we are surrounded by, we are already living inside a computer. We also get into Helpful Place's project called the Digital Trust for Places & Routines standard, which is meant to increase the transparency, legibility and accountability of digital technology in the built environment. Our second conversation is with John Houweling. John is the Director of Data, Analytics and Visualization for York Region in the Greater Toronto Area. John shares his insights from a fascinating career focused on data both in the public and private sectors and his his insights on the importance of data to fuel the digital revolution. We also talk about the digital maturity model that Think Digital has developed with York Region that help public sector organizations better understand what they need to do to make sure they have the capacity to operate effectively in a modern digital world.Watch on YouTubehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNuJ_1kx_jYRelated LinksBlog Post: Think Digital Digital Maturity Assessment ModelHelpful PlacesDigital Trust for Places and Routines StandardYork Region "Putting Data to Work"Chapters00:04 Introduction03:09 Interview with Jacqueline Lu04:57 The Impact of Digital Technology on Public Spaces07:38 The Role of Trust in Technology Adoption12:57 The Digital Trust for Places and Routines Standard16:02 The Importance of Transparency and Trust in Technology21:34 Government Adoption of Technology is a Trust Issue26:44 Interview with John Houweling29:17 John's Journey and Transition into Government33:36 Data Sharing and Collaboration36:52 Digital Academy and Training40:24 Digital Maturity and Benchmarking44:38 Adopting Digital Standards48:37 Conclusion and Final Thoughts from Ryan
Can government do the things that it says it is going to do? One of the hardest things that public servants have to do is implement and it gets to the heart of a state's capacity to deliver. In the digital era, that means being able to deliver digitally. And when we think about state capacity in this context, it often seems that we find our institutions coming up short.State capacity is something that this week's guest has thought a lot about. On this episode we talk about the human factors that can prevent and enable digital government innovation. We start with Alistair Croll, Founder and Content Chair of FWD50, and the results of their 2023 Digital Government Content Survey. There's some really interesting results about what digital government practitioners are seeing as priorities, and the challenges they face in pushing through innovation within their organizations. We then talk with Nilufer Erdebil, Founder and CEO of Spring2 Innovation and an Associate at Think Digital, who talks about her new book, "Future Proofing by Design". She talks about the importance of design thinking, not just as a methodology, but as a way of approaching problem solving in government that can make your life, the lives of citizens, and even your boss' life, easier.Related LinksFWD50 2023 Digital Government Content Survey ResultsFuture Proofing by Design, by Nilufer ErdebilWatch the Video Version of the Episodehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXVsrNi_al8

Unlike in the private sector, governments don't choose their users. That's why even more important in the public sector to make sure that technology and digital transformation efforts work for everyone. It doesn't matter how innovative or efficient digital technology can be for public institutions if the implementation of those actively exclude people from accessing and benefiting from public services and assets. That's why principles like accessibility, sustainability and openness are so important when we think about digital transformation.Joining Ryan to talk about this is Mike Gifford, an Associate with Think Digital, and a Senior Strategist at CivicActions, a technology consultancy that helps government deliver better public services through modern technology and design.Watch the Video Version of the Episodehttps://youtu.be/rmO5T7zQtU4

Let's Think Digital is a new podcast about what it takes to use digital technologies to transform our world to improve peoples' lives. Hosted by Ryan Androsoff, Founder of Think Digital, and an incredible community of digital innovators from all walks of life, this podcast goes beyond the hype of founder culture. Our focus isn't just user counts, funding rounds and quarterly profits. Instead we're going to talk about why systems resist change, and how transformation is just as much about people and culture as it is about tech stacks. You'll hear a wide range of topics, from the link between procurement and digital government, to the impact of new technologies like the metaverse. From equity, inclusion and ethical responsibilities for tech, to why governments can't be run like businesses, particularly when it comes to providing digital services to citizens. We're eager to talk about the political and philosophical ramifications of technology and what it means for the future of government. Our goal is to help you to learn about how digital is impacting our world, to ask better questions, and to be able to call bullshit when you need to! Learn more at https://www.letsthinkdigital.ca!

Welcome to episode number 13, um, of the Hybrid Ministry podcast. I am your host, as always, Nick Clason. And, um, bad news, Matt is in Spain, and, um, he just started a new job. And so I was talking to him last week on the phone and he has to figure out his computer situation. Doesn't even know if he is gonna have one or not. So listen, there may be some changes on the horizon. He may be back. Maybe I'll figure something out. Um, maybe not, but that's okay. Um, and I'll just be honest. Um, my moving truck came in today, Oh my word. It has been 10 days of sleeping on an air mattress. And I don't know if you've seen that TikTok about corn. It's such a beautiful thing. Uh, but if you go follow me on TikTok at Clason, nick, it's c l a s o n, no Y in there. Nick Clason (01:00): Um, I just posted TikTok about how my bed is the most beautiful thing, not corn. Sorry kid. Oh man. It's so good to sleep on a, on a regular mattress again. Uh, actually I haven't even done that yet. I am recording before I go to bed. Um, all that being said, probably gonna be a pretty short pod. Uh, but I wanted to talk a little bit about this idea. Um, and I just wanna brand it. Say, um, let's try to think digital, um, why we're not gonna think digital because of digital for digital's sake, right? But what I wanna do with thinking digital is, first of all, couple of ideas. Number one, uh, when things are made digital, it's just easier, right? And so, you know, I think there's sometimes this notion in church of the fact of like, if you're gonna follow Jesus, it's gonna be hard. Nick Clason (01:55): So we're not gonna make it easy on you, so suck it up. And if you wanna send up to serve, we're not gonna give it to you in two clicks. You gotta go talk to Carl, who's the head usher and get on Carl's Excel spreadsheet, right? Or whatever the case may be. But digital is just so much easier. Um, I'll give you an example. Talking about my moving company. Um, they took my stuff 10 days ago or so in Chicago and, um, no one was super clear with me about what the process was gonna be. So, uh, the next day I just called the company. I was like, Hey, so how do we like schedule this? They're like, Oh, we'll call you. And that was it. And I just, uh, there was some stuff and moving companies are never like the most upright, forthright. So there was just some stuff that like concerned me a little bit. Nick Clason (02:51): And so, uh, I wasn't, I was not okay with that being the only answer. And so I wanted to continue. I stayed on 'em, I stayed hot on their tail. Uh, but it was a pain in the, But let me tell you what, like, uh, they did not have an infrastructure for somebody who was interested in knowing the whereabouts of the contents of their house. Uh, their, their infrastructure was when we're ready to bring you your things, we will tell you. But until then we got nothing for you. Um, compare that to Amazon, Who has an updated ETA delivery? Lets, you know when the item is 10 stops away from your house and you can track it on the, on the map. Like, uh, what I was thinking I should have done, you know, after, of course everything's loaded and I'm here in Texas just waiting for my stuff to arrive. Nick Clason (03:48): So I was like, Man, I should have put some sort of find my iPhone or GPS tracking device or something on the truck just so I can know where the contents of my house were sitting. You know, like that, that has just been interesting to me. And you know, I don't think that this moving company has any desire to, uh, to change their ways, you know? But I was reaching out, I was thinking about reaching out to 'em and just saying, Hey, you know, if you had some sort of tracking system or whatever, like that would've made a my life a lot easier, but b, yours as well. Cause I wouldn't have called you 36 times trying to figure out where everything was. So think digital. How can you make it easier? How can you give, uh, an how can, how can you give a, uh, user experience one that's just a little bit easier? Nick Clason (04:39): So think about someone at your church wants to sign up to serve. Can they find that information on your website? If they want to attend your church, can they find that information on your website? If they want to join a small group, do they have to ask somebody what in the world the name of this small group means? Because it's some acronym that you created 36 years ago that no one even really remembers anymore, but everyone just calls it the Frog Group. And you're like, Oh yeah, what's that mean? Like, fuck yo. Yeah. Fully rely on God. Yeah, Carl named it that 10 years ago, right? I don't know what my vendetta is against Kyle, Kyle, Carl, but what, like, do you have something, um, that's clear and that makes it easier for the person? Because the fact is, like, as things get more difficult, uh, people just tend to give up. So keep that in mind. And you're like, Well, that's not committed. Yeah, it's also just human psychology. And so it's not that people aren't committed, but, but make it, make it like, make it accessible for people. Make them be able to attach to it. Nick Clason (05:48): All right? Another idea, um, I had on thinking digital is, is this, um, again, tales from a moving company. Um, the customer service of this moving company was awful, right? So the movers, um, in Chicago were fine. The movers in Dallas, uh, they were super kind and so, so much better than the movers that I had in Chicago. Um, the guy who sold me, uh, the truck and everything, great guy. Um, but also like, not total, not sure if he was totally truthful. And then, but the person in between, they put me in, in touch with, uh, George. So George sold me on the moving company and everything like that. They put me in touch with George's manager. Her name is Pauline. And, um, I don't know if I've ever met somebody who is, uh, seems so annoyed with human contact in my entire life. Nick Clason (06:48): And I'm not trying to be mean, and I'm not trying to be like a, an an awful Christian, right? But like, she had no desire to talk to me. Like her company held the contents of my entire life. And I was just calling to say, Hey Pauline, how's things going? Any idea on the eta my truck? Again, mind you, they have no way to let me know that. Like, they just give me a window and say that's when it's gonna be. So I'm just supposed to be okay with that, right? Meanwhile, everyone I'm talking to is like, that's taking forever. That's crazy. Why is this so long? And then I'm talking to them and they're like, No, it's not, it's not that long. Like, you just feel like it's long. It's really not that big a deal. Like what? What? Right? You know? So it's like I call her and I just felt like I was annoying her. Nick Clason (07:36): She's like, Hello. Um, and so be kind to people like figure out the best way in which you can, um, make people's lives easier. Like how, how is your interaction with that person going to make their life easier? And then let's think about how you can do that digitally. Because the fact of the matter is, if you're a church, you're probably only only interacting with someone on a Sunday morning or maybe a Wednesday night or some midweek type of deal. How can you also bring that level of customer service? How can you bring that level of joy and satisfaction to your digital channels, to your social media so that the people that are following you, so the people that are engaging with you, are seeing the joy that Jesus has brought into your life. And you're exuding that not only in your in-person interactions, but also in your digital interactions. Nick Clason (08:26): See, that stuff matters. And I'll just tell you, as somebody who's been on the other side of a not so joyful person and company, um, it has made my experience with this company terrible. I I will never use them again. And quite honestly, this is like the third move I've made that's been significant, where I've had to load up a truck and all that stuff, and honestly, they probably did the best job of any moving company I've ever done, uh, as far as like the actual loading and the actual wrapping of a furniture and all those types of things. But the reality is I'll never go with them again. Why customer service? They made me feel terrible and they made me feel stupid the entire way through. Last thing, be clear. Be clear with what's going on. Again, um, tales from a moving company. So, uh, this guy George, he, he books me, uh, for, um, a, you know, a price. Nick Clason (09:22): And he says, I'm overestimating based on what you're telling me. So you're probably gonna pay less. Guy walks in Chicago, and he's like, uh, it's actually gonna be $3,000 more than, um, what George told you on the phone. Like, hold on a minute, right? Like, that's a lot of money. And uh, of course in reading the reviews, it sounded like this was standard practice for this company. Um, but, but then, right? Like I said, then they drove away. And it wasn't until later that night or the next day, we were dawned on me, I was like, Wait a minute. I don't know how to schedule pick up. I don't know when to expect my truck. Like, I, I have no idea, right? Like, I just, there's no clarity on the process, right? And so think about if someone wants to volunteer in your ministry, are you clear on what the steps are, right? Nick Clason (10:17): Like I'm a youth pastor, and so to volunteer in youth ministry, in most cases, and in most churches, it's gonna be, uh, quite, quite cumbersome to be honest with you, because we're gonna be running back around checks and we're gonna be probably checking references, and we're probably gonna be having you do some sort of, uh, training, um, that, you know, some video training on, you know, sexual abuse or, uh, mandated reporting or the child protective services laws in your state, or whatever the case may, right? Like it takes a lot to get you into a position of influence and into the same room with a bunch of teenagers, rightfully so, as it should, right? But be clear, if someone's like, I wanna volunteer youth ministry, great, you're on the team, and then they get home and they have 37 emails from you, from your admin, from the screening company, from whatever, and you're calling references, and they didn't give chance to give those references a head up heads up. Nick Clason (11:17): Like, just be clear. And, and even if it's right, like if this company, this moving company would've told me like, Hey, it's gonna be seven to 17 days for transit from Chicago to Texas. While that's a long time, and I'm not a fan of that, Like I would've known it and I wouldn't have been freaking out quite as much wondering where in the world my things are because there was no one laid it out for me. There was no clarity. I had to go seek it out. And by the time I got to the end of the line, I got to a customer service representative who didn't really want to talk to any customers. And so if they would've laid that out, I wouldn't have had to a slug through so many phone calls, you know, call the company, press one for this, two for that, and getting myself worked up or myself frustrated all the way along the way. Nick Clason (12:06): So, so just be clear, right? So number one, think digital. Number two, be nice, be kind to people. And number three, be clear and lay things out. Again, like I said, um, you got the brunt of my frustration of unloading, unpacking, moving truck, but we're here, we're settled. And, uh, listen, like, say whatever you want, think whatever you want, but I've been able to keep these suckers rolling out every Thursday morning consistently. And so that's been a feat in and of itself. Like I said, now that things are hopefully settling down a little bit, uh, we'll be able to maybe line up schedule with Matt. If not, that's fine. I'm gonna keep, uh, solo pod in it and just, uh, do my best Colin Cowherd impression. Uh, but excited to be continuing on this journey with you. Uh, in the couple weeks, I wanna let you know how our digital initiative stuff are going. Nick Clason (13:00): We had a website conversation with our communications people last week, um, here in Texas at our church to create a more hub style, uh, website. Um, and then this week, um, so I'm like five of six, six tos in. Um, I've gone head first into a three day TikTok posting strategy. So it's a lot of forethought and planning, but, uh, this is now the second time I've done it, and so I found it to be quite a bit easier. And so, um, while it may seem daunting at first, once you kind of get your bearings a little bit, um, you'll, you'll be a little, you know, you'll be a little bit better. And then last, uh, listen, I mean, there's nothing to be proud of. And, um, I'm shooting right now on a same Sun Galaxy S nine phone, terrible quality. I just, uh, pre-ordered the brand new, uh, Google Pixel Pro seven, so it's like the best camera right there on the market, either between that or the newest iPhone. Nick Clason (13:57): So, um, it's weird, I'm an Apple guy for everything, but for phones, I'm, I'm the same or I'm a Android person. So when you do Google Pixel, um, and uh, check out the new phone quality on that. Uh, but if you wanna go check out what we're posting on TikTok, we're at first Colville students, um, on TikTok and Instagram, posting the exact same content both on reels there on Instagram and on TikTok. So, like I said, we're just getting started with that this week. Um, and it's gonna be a lot of me on there. I'm gonna try and diversify it with my team here in the coming weeks, but just wanted to get things up and rolling, uh, there on TikTok. So, hey, thanks for hanging out. Appreciate it. Uh, love to hear from you guys. We're hybridministry.xyz online. We're also @hybridministry on Twitter. And, uh, we'll talk to you next time. See you guys.

Dies zeigt Jan Fode, Head of Events in IBM DACH.
MMB Online Acum două săptămâni s-a întâmplat . For those who may not know, I used to be a pastor before launching Think Digital, but I was really interested in social media and digital marketing. I found myself coming up with excuses everyday as to why I cant launch my digital product. I felt that people may think that I am a fraud, no business experience, no team, and my biggest excuse of all - there are a million people who are talking about digital marketing. Finally, I have a friend who shifted my way of thinking about digital products, and I eventually stopped making excuses. Show Notes [01:44] The conversation that changed the way I think about digital products There are hundred of thousands of books getting published everyday Pick any topic you want into Google and there are hundreds of thousands of books every topic You have experiences, relationships, and a particular way of seeing teaching a particular topic [03:25] The three shifts in concepts that completely changed my family's life Digitizing my mind - What I knew. Digitizing my skills - What I did. Digitizing my systems - How I did it. I launched my course in July 2013, and by the end of the year, we had 100 students in our first course. [05:00] The hurdle in creating digital products Why would anybody listen to me? It's not always a problem of skill. Throughout the years, I saw people who knew less skills that I did but makes more money. Stop making excuses. Start building the digital product that you want to make. I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about how to get new clients right now. I’ve also been thinking about how I will have to change my business and plan for the next several months or year or two, even though so many things are unknown during this pandemic. First, here are some reminders about how to be a rock star for your clients. This is about your personality, attitude and ability to be helpful. What you should always do, but especially right now: Respond quickly. I know this isn’t always possible. There are exceptions. But when a client emails you, especially if you’re already working on an assignment for them, get back to them quickly—as in that same day if possible. Don’t leave them hanging. Don’t ghost clients. This should be obvious, but I’ve had freelancers working for me who did not only respond quickly, they just didn’t respond at all. For days. On a deadline. And I never hired those people again. Meet your deadlines. If you are having trouble with your deadline, reach out to your client as soon as possible. The worst thing is to reach out the day of and say you can’t meet the deadline. You just sound like you procrastinated. Instead, contact your client several days before your deadline, apologize and ask for an extension. Do the little things. For writers, that might mean suggesting headlines and subheads and creating a list of all sources with contact information for fast fact-checking. Don’t overshare. Clients don’t have the time or mental energy to hear all about your troubles. They just want their project on time and done right. Be helpful. Be polite. Now, I want to share four ideas to consider as you pivot and work to earn more money and gain new clients: Think digital FIRST. And think digital for EVERYTHING. I know some of you might have video chat/Zoom fatigue, but we have to be all digital most of the time. We don’t have a choice. This is the world we live in now. Whether you are already providing services digitally (writing, website design, etc.) or not, you have to think digital for everything right now. On one end of the spectrum are courses and webinars. What skills can you teach online right now? Aim to make money, but this is also about expanding your network and showcasing yourself as an expert—which can then lead to new work. But you can also start smaller, perhaps with Instagram videos or Facebook Live sessions. What are you an expert in that people want to know more about? Join an online practice group, accountability group or Facebook groups. In short, expand your support network. But this is not just about networking. It’s about gathering with people in your industry—or an adjacent industry—to share best practices and ideas about how everyone is pivoting right now. And the people in these groups can also commiserate with you as we all struggle through this. Be a part of the conversation. It can be helpful to talk to friends and commiserate with other freelancers right now, but it’s also important to be a part of the larger conversation as an expert in your field. Pose questions on LinkedIn. Answer questions in Facebook groups. Take part in tweet chats, such as #FreelanceChat every Thursday at 12 p.m. Eastern time. You can also consider being a guest on a podcast—or even starting your own. Write a guest blog post. Be strategic about all this: Who are you trying to reach? Is there a way to reach your potential clients? How can you get out front and center in your industry? Be really helpful. Ask nearly everyone you know: How can I help with your work? What are you struggling with in your position? What does your organization need? Maybe they won’t have work for you right now, but I bet they remember you for asking. Maybe they can offer you a smaller project or you can charge a bit less than you normally would. Or if you can’t help or they need a service you don’t provide, you can refer them to a freelancer who might be able to. If you take nothing else out of this episode, I highly encourage you to think digital first. Think digital for everything. What new and creative ways can you pivot into providing digital services and content for your audience? Acum suntem ok, s-a făcut lumină. Justin Wise is “The Business Pastor,” teaching faith-based people how to keep and use their faith to grow their businesses and profits. As a former pastor, and the founder of the digital marketing consultancy Think Digital, Justin knows you can build massive success, all while maintaining and using your faith in the process. He’s spoken to thousands of people about integrating faith and business at conferences such as Infusionsoft’s ICON conference and the Digital Media Summit.
Justin started Think Digital with the belief that marketing your business online didn't need to be so damn difficult. Or scary. Or confusing. If you have the right guide, it's actually pretty simple.
What happens when you start a business, it seems pretty successful from the outside, but is it sucking your soul away? What do you do when your clients start to act more like pirates? Entrepreneurship is full of a lot of peaks and valleys. Getting through those valleys can be downright brutal. On our most recent podcast episode, we have a candid conversation with Justin Wise, who built a very successful digital marketing company from scratch, watched it implode, and found the wherewithal to start rebuilding again. Justin Wise studied to be a pastor, but found the digital communication part of that life to be more suited to him than having the title “pastor.” He went on to start what would become a very successful digital marketing company called Think Digital. The company went through a phase where things were, to put it mildly, not going well. Justin does not hold back in describing the challenges of this time. Some colorful and downright icky analogies are used. But that's just effective communication, folks! Having things fall apart is an entrepreneur's worst nightmare. How do you come back from setbacks like this? How do you keep your faith intact? How does your family weather those storms? For some solid answers and some great inspiration, our conversation with Justin will not disappoint. what you will learn in this episode: How to build a business from your existing network How to sell off aspects of your company and when that makes sense Why protecting status is a barrier to risk-taking The crucial role of supportive family and mentors to business success How to monetize your expertise Why communication with your management team is so important How to pick up the pieces when a business dies Building systems and processes so clients don't walk all over you How to find a financial path forward without losing your soul Why people of faith should be more willing than others to take risks rather than play it safe

Warren Knight isn't your traditional entrepreneur (whatever that is). He began as a hip hop dancer, and quite simply saw the opportunities that presented themselves at each step and grabbed them with both hands. Today he helps companies around the world transform themselves into digital organisations. His book Think #Digital First came out of those conversations. First published in 2015, it's now in its second edition, but what's even more interesting to EBBC listeners is the way that Warren has created 'micro-niche' editions to serve specific market sectors. This is a great example here of creating a book that's completely tuned to its readers' needs: 'I wanted to tell my story... all of these stories of closing doors, turning over 30 million dollars. All of those stories that I needed to put down in a book, but it needed to have a purpose and a goal... I was doing a lot of coaching, working with businesses. And the thing that they kept saying was, "Oh, Warren, I know I really need to be thinking digital first with what I'm doing, with my business. I have a great offline business but how can I take it online?" So their thinking needs to shift. "We've got a good business and we know what we do well, but my thinking needs to be about what we can do from an online perspective." And I came out of having a meeting and I went, "That's it." I'd written it down three times in three different meetings. I went, "That's the title of the book.... I now know what my purpose is, I know where it needs to start. And now I know where it needs to finish."'

Brand Identity is at the core of every business, especially as it resonates with the values of the leader behind the company. Krysta Masciale is the CEO and Brand Strategist of BIG DEAL BRANDING. She is best known for her honesty and practical approach to helping audiences recalibrate and take action steps towards building a compelling brand. Her work has ranged from small creative businesses to multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical companies. She has given talks to NGO and University audiences in Dubai, China, and India while speaking domestically at communities like Pepperdine University, Yellow, Identity Conference, and Think Digital. Her belief is that strategy and design go hand-in-hand. Clarity, team unity, a meaningful brand experience, and a robust bottom line is achievable when the two are fully integrated. Krysta has a Masters in Organizational Leadership. She’s a midwest native living in Los Angeles with her husband and son. Your brand identity keeps you from prostituting yourself. Brand Identity is often spoken of in terms of how you want your prospects and ideal clients to perceive of your business or brand. And that s not a bad place to start. But it s becoming more and more apparent that as often happens, businesses are not actually who they portray themselves to be. Krysta Masciale has spent her business career striving to bring her personal values into alignment with her business brand identity because she believes that none of her clients or customers will really want what she has to offer if the two aren t aligned. She s tired of being a poser, tired of foisting an image on unsuspecting clients who think they are getting one thing but are actually getting something different. And she s tired of seeing business owners or CEOs who don t realize that the inconsistency between their values and brand identity even exists Alignment between values and brand identity is often overlooked. As a business begins, the founders are often very clear, at least in their own minds, about what their business stands for in terms of values. But as success and the rat race of business take their toll those values can tend to shift into the background, becoming less of the compelling reason than they once were. When this happens the business and its leaders can run on fumes for many years – a raging success in the marketplace perhaps, but with a growing inner tension that takes them close to the breaking point. Krysta Masciale helps leaders assess the consistency of their image as it relates to their core values and bring them into alignment for the benefit of the company, its team members, and the people it serves. You ll enjoy hearing the authentic, straightforward way Krysta addresses these issues, so be sure you listen. 3 steps to assess the values alignment within your life and business. When personal values and the activities that fill our lives become misaligned it s difficult to notice and even harder to assess and correct. That s why it s helpful to have an outside set of eyes looking in on the issues and speaking the truth about what is discovered. Krysta Masciale and her business, Big Deal Branding serve business leaders in exactly that way, even providing individual coaching for 3-month stints to help bring values and actions into alignment once again – and the results of the recalibration is remarkable to see. You can hear the stories of how the reintegration of values and brand identity make a powerful difference and get Krysta’s 3 step process for addressing your own values-brand inconsistencies, on this episode of Converge. The benefits of honest life and business can t be underestimated. By now, you’ve hopefully begun to create your own content. But, how do you share your content on social media? Justin Wise, Owner and Founder of ThinkDigital.co, shares with us the system he uses both in his own business and for his clients. At Think Digital Justin focuses on a three-prong approach to digital marketing for his clients: Education, outsourcing, and social ad placement. When creating a content and social strategy for your business, we discuss the hierarchy of messaging for marketing. We start first with Purpose. Without purpose, your clients don’t care. They want to know that their business with you matters. Second, we focus on Persona. Who are you speaking to? In Justin’s example, two gyms with identical purpose will have very different strategies based upon the personas that occupy their business. Third, we focus on process. How is your day and week blocked off to prioritize sharing your purpose to your personas? Lastly, this strategy ends in revelation of your product. That “Get Started” call-to-action; the actual workout itself. Justin leaves us with an excellent tactic we can use today. We give you a blog post title prompt with a step-by-step process to maximize your leads to members. Remember: Your future members need significantly more contact points than you think before they’re ready to commit to your product. You need to be front of mind when they’re ready. In this episode we chat with author, speaker, founder and the very “legit” Mr. Justin Wise, CEO of ThinkDigital. The core of the conversation revolves around purpose. Justin talks about the path to success for ThinkDigital was paved with purpose. Many small business owners and entrepreneurs don’t invest the time in creating clarity of purpose. And Justin believes that a cornerstone of success in digital marketing and social is “a deep-seated connection to a common purpose” between an audience and a business. Once your purpose is clear it’s much simpler to engage on social. As a social media maven, Justin talks about engagement as the ultimate differentiator. He’s going-for-broke on engagement across all channels--not just social media.
