We hear from someone who never truly believed in ghosts… until one cold Oklahoma afternoon changed everything. What began as a quiet day with a Goosebumps book and a Walkman turned into months of eerie sightings, silent stares, and one final confrontation that brought it all to an end—or so they thought. Was it the spirit of a long-lost farmer? A remnant of something older? Or something else entirely? Two Oklahoma residents, Paul Grice and Cora Twombly—members of the fringe group God's Misfits—are cooperating with authorities in a disturbing murder case involving the March 2024 killings of Veronica Butler and Jilian Kelley. Testimony reveals that the victims were lured to a trailer under false pretenses and murdered in a religiously motivated plot led by Tifany Adams, the children's grandmother, amid a custody dispute. Grice admitted Adams asked him to kill Butler and used Bible verses to justify the act, while Twombly described her role in destroying evidence. The women's bodies were later found in an underground freezer, and both defendants now face lengthy sentences under plea deals as the case heads toward trial. This week's reading was A Thousand and One Nights, also known as The Arabian Nights. The backstory (very, very briefly) was that a king, upon finding his queen to be unfaithful, executed her, and declared himself done with women, sort of. Every night, a new woman was brought to be his queen. Every morning he had his vizier execute the poor unfortunate girl. One day the vizier's own daughter Scheherazade asked to be married to the king. After many days of begging, the vizier finally gave in to the girl's request.Once in the king's bedchamber, her sister (it's kind of complicated) asked for a story. Scheherazade spun a tale but ended it at a cliffhanger. The king, wanting to hear the end of the story, decided to let her live and bring her back for a second night. With stories that included Sinbad, Ali Baba and Aladdin, Scheherazade lived a thousand and one (and more) nights. The actual stories are collected from around the 8th century until the 13th, from Persia and India predominantly. They were translated into English around the 17th century. I'd imagine that the exotic stories captivated European audiences! For me, the experience of reading the stories was similar to reading Grimm's Fairy Tales. The stories are fun, and very interesting—I loved some of them, especially the seven voyages of Sinbad. But when I say they didn't leave a mark, I just don't think I'll take a lot from this week's reading. I didn't find any of them to demonstrate particular lessons, to teach virtues or make some kind of grand statement about the human condition. They were really fun, and I will definitely keep this book around because it is terrific bedtime reading. That's not a terrible thing to say about a book.A year ago I read the wonderful Everything Sad is Untrue by Daniel Nayeri, about a little Iranian boy who emigrates to Oklahoma with his mom and brother. There are vignettes in which the author directly references these stories, related as a way for him to hold onto his Persian heritage. I do think I'll go back and reread that one, just because I really loved it and would like to be able to know it a little better. Now that I've read Arabian Nights, that should be easy.LINKDaniel Nayeri, author of Everything Sad is UntrueTed Gioia/The Honest Broker's 12-Month Immersive Humanities Course (paywalled!)My Amazon Book List (NOT an affiliate link)CONNECTTo read more of my writing, visit my Substack - https://www.cheryldrury.substack.com.Follow me on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/cldrury/ LISTENSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/5GpySInw1e8IqNQvXow7Lv?si=9ebd5508daa245bdApple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/crack-the-book/id1749793321 Captivate - https://crackthebook.captivate.fm

Your Parenting Mojo - Respectful, research-based parenting ideas to help kids thrive
This is the third in our series of episodes on Jonathan Haidt's book The Anxious Generation. In Part 1, we looked at the evidence for the teen 'mental health crisis.' In Part 2, we reviewed the evidence for whether social media is causing the so-called 'teen mental health crisis. In this episode, we begin looking at what to do about the effects of phones on kids - starting with school cell phone bans. Phone bans are spreading like wildfire across America, with 21 states either studying or already enforcing restrictions, up from none just a few years ago. But before you advocate for - or against - a ban at your child's school, you need to hear what the research actually reveals. This episode examines real studies from Denmark, England, and Hungary, plus the eye-opening results from schools using those tamper-proof Yonder pouches that promise to solve everything. You'll discover why the "golden age" of unsupervised childhood play that experts want us to return to wasn't actually golden for most kids. More importantly, you'll learn what's really driving students to their phones: unmet needs for choice, agency, and genuine connection. Through a fascinating deep-dive into one teacher's blog post about his school's phone ban, you'll see how current approaches may be missing the point entirely, and what students themselves say would actually help them engage more in school. Which states are banning cell phones in schools? 21 states are currently studying or have already enforced cell phone bans, including Florida, Louisiana, Virginia, Indiana, Oklahoma, North Dakota, and New York. Are cell phone bans in schools effective for improving academic performance? Research shows mixed results with only tiny improvements on test scores, and most studies don't control for other factors that could explain the changes. Does banning phones in school improve students' mental health? Studies from multiple countries found no significant improvements in student anxiety, depression, or overall wellbeing from cell phone restrictions. Are cell phone bans in schools a good idea? The evidence suggests that school cell phone bans address symptoms rather than root causes - students turn to phones because their needs for autonomy and connection aren't being met. What happens when schools try to enforce cell phones being banned in schools? Students find creative workarounds: stabbing through security pouches, buying unlock magnets, bringing decoy phones, and creating underground phone-sharing economies. Why do students want their phones during school hours? Research shows students use phones to meet basic psychological needs for choice, agency, and genuine connection that traditional classrooms often fail to provide. What you'll learn in this episode The real data on school cell phone ban effectiveness - examining studies from Denmark, England, Hungary, and the U.S. that reveal surprising results about academic and mental health outcomes Which states are leading the cell phone ban movement - a breakdown of the 21 states implementing or studying restrictions, from Florida's pioneering ban to New York's upcoming policies...
Oklahoma's Superintendent Ryan Walters faces a lawsuit over new, controversially enacted education standards that inject Christian nationalist dogma and conspiracy theories into public school curricula. These changes, lacking transparency, bundle divisive religious content with popular but unfunded mandates, exemplifying a "shit-filled M&M" approach to policy. This blatant religious overreach is part of a broader Christian nationalist strategy to indoctrinate children, undermine secular education, and solidify power by marginalizing other faiths and non-believers. It highlights hypocrisy and poses significant challenges for teachers and the separation of church and state.**News Source:Oklahoma Sued Over School Standards, By Hemant Mehta for The Friendly Atheist, July 2, 2025

The message was delivered on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Randy Lewis, Assistant Minister. DESCRIPTION If you could whisper one truth to your younger self, what would it be? Would you tell them how to avoid heartbreak, or remind them they were always enough? In a world rewriting reality faster than we can keep up, how do we stay grounded without giving in to fear? History shows us that even unfinished work matters. Maybe the real time machine we need isn't a DeLorean, but the kind that brings us fully alive, here and now.
