The US government is worried there might not be enough trained workers to fill the needs of the CHIPS act. President Biden has announced a Workforce Partner Alliance (WFPA) to ensure the gap for skilled workers will be closed as soon as possible. WFPA is designed to reward providers with grants of between $500,000 and $2 million to provide the training for these new chip facilities. Is this something that we can count on? Or will it turn into another boondoggle like ITT Tech? This and more on this week's Rundown. Today we're talking with former student veterans who testified before the US Dept. of Education in Washington DC, regarding for-profit colleges that failed to provide the useful degrees they promised, all while burning through the GI Bill funding they earned and even their private student loans. We start with Air Force veteran Stephanie Pollay who shared her experience getting a degree from ITT Tech, the $200K debt she incurred, and the harsh reality she faced after trying to apply it to the real world. We also hear from Navy veteran Angela McMillen, who describes how her college merged with Ashford University, and although she paid for post graduate studies intended for a PhD in Clinical Psychology Research, the school was never accredited. Marine Corps vet Will Hubbard describes what Veteran Education Success is doing in DC to ensure proper oversight and laws to protect student veterans from for profit schools targeting military vets and other low-income students. Patreon-only preshow: Do people have to cite their sources at ITT Tech? Steven says no. Steven got some Marvel Studios blind bag LEGO, gave a Patreon member one of his 80s Storm minifigs. Ben waxes poetic on the joys of opening trading cards, and rails against collecting things that are “maybe” worth money. Was 90s collectible culture a manifestation of the side-hustle? How cool is it to make indie films? This episode contains: Morning podcasting is a very different vibe than evening podcasting. Twitter is dead, long live notes. Will these notes be a novel? If you're interested in reading a novel about bounty hunting, touch base with Steven. Bounty hunters are cool. How do they work? Cowboy Bebop live action is good, but if you've seen the anime, don't watch it! It's terrible compared to the anime. What a trip!: Psychedelic Therapy May Be Coming To A VR Headset Near You. Hallucinogenic drugs may have positive effects in fighting depression, PTSD and substance use disorders. What if psychedelic drug-based therapy didn't require drugs at all? A small study published in March 2023 found that those who spent time using a VR program called Psyrreal, which attempts to mimic the hallucinogenic experience in virtual reality, had significant decreases in depressive symptoms two weeks after treatment. Ben tried the VR program Psyrreal, as a 45 minute experience, and felt a distinct connection to all things. What an incredible experience, only using visual and auditory sensations. You can try it too, for free, if you have a VR headset and a computer capable of running it. https://www.inverse.com/health/psychedelic-therapy-in-virtual-reality Psyrreal VR: https://psyrreal.mozellosite.com/ Be Naked Like a Mole Rat: Longevity gene from naked mole rats extends lifespan of mice. We need to live longer. In a groundbreaking endeavor, researchers at the University of Rochester have successfully transferred a longevity gene from naked mole rats to mice, resulting in improved health and an extension of the mouse's lifespan. Naked mole rats, known for their long lifespans and exceptional resistance to age-related diseases, have long captured the attention of the scientific community. By introducing a specific gene responsible for enhanced cellular repair and protection into mice, researchers at Rochester have opened exciting possibilities for unlocking the secrets of aging and extending human lifespan. Did you know that naked mole rats live up to 41 years?!?! The researchers previously discovered that HMW-HA is one mechanism responsible for naked mole rats' unusual resistance to cancer. Compared to mice and humans, naked mole rats have about ten times more HMW-HA in their bodies. After good results adding HMW-HA in mice, we're almost ready to test on humans. Would this break society? Almost certainly, but it probably will break it for the better! We dream about societal impacts from genetic modification. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2023/08/230823165402.htm Patreon-only midshow: Star Trek Lower Decks season 3 is now free on Youtube and a few other places, in prep for season 4. Ben describes Psyrreal in greater depth. Steven's kids love Ralph Breaks The Internet. Disney Dreamlight Valley is a gateway to all the Disney. Ben and his kid loved Ron's Gone Wrong, even though it's similar to Next Gen. Science Fiction: Starfield: https://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/starfield Ben can't play yet because he's cheap. Steven says SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY. Steven waxes poetic about his new galactic-sized timesink. The music in Starfield is the best part. Except for paying 500 credits for lemonade. 10/10 game of the year. Secret Little Haven: https://ristar.itch.io/secret-little-haven Ben was captivated by a visual novel that replicates using an operating system circa May 12, 1999. You take the role of Alex, a young trans girl that discovers herself through fandom, chats, and the early internet. It takes about an hour and a half. It helped Ben contextualize the challenge of being your authentic self, from a Trans perspective. You can also get it on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/827290/Secret_Little_Haven/ We chat about episode three of Ahsoka, which really opened things up a bit in terms of characterization. The journey has began. Could Star Wars have a story with the scope of Foundation? Steven doubts it. The Flash is now on Max. Ben says watch it! It's a movie that has nothing to lose. You'll like it, especially if you know about Eric Stoltz in Back to the Future. Is it time for a Batman Beyond project with Michael Keaton? We cast the project with a bunch of previous Batmen.

When Wayne got fired from Applebees for a new hand tattoo, he didn't know that less than a decade later he'd be naming a new part of the brain. In Part I of our two part series with the founder of Statespace we hear about why being obsessed with video games and training as an MMA fighter prepared him to start a video game analytics company as a young Neuroscience postdoc at NYU. Wayne's story starts in high school where he taught himself how to code for fun, but the rest of his path to being a tech founder is anything but usual. Growing up in a small town in Ohio he originally didn't set his eyes on college, instead working various jobs in sales, customer service, and management. By the time he went back to school towards his 30s, starting with ITT Tech and a community college, he realized he could capitalize on his computer science knowledge. This episode details how he went from that small community college to getting a PhD in neuroscience at NYU, and how he came up with the idea for his startup, a product that uses neuroscience to help people get better at video games. In Part II, we'll discuss how he raised capital and grew his business to hundreds of thousands of users in his first year. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This episode of the [... and Landlord] Podcast tells my story of being on a cruise, reading the book Rich Dad / Poor Dad, and finding my first property a few months later, to add... and Landlord - to my other titles of Husband, Father and Entrepreneur (Realtor would come later that same year). It was March / April of 2015 and I was on a 7 day cruise to Bonaire, Grand Turk (and other destinations) with my wife and son (at the time age 7), along with two other couples who are close friends and their 2 young children each (11 people in all). To read, I brought along the book Rich Dad / Poor Dad... It changed my life! Despite having a great time with my family and great friends, this book had me really wanting the cruise to be over sooner than later, so that I could get off the boat and start looking for my first rental property - as the book (along with my prior interest in being a Landlord) had me passionately wanting to do. Finally, I had found something that put into words what I had somehow felt all along - that going to school, getting a job and working for someone else (to make them rich), buying stocks / mutual funds and saving for retirement in a IRA / 401K was NOT going to give me the life (or retirement) that I desired. You see, I had been self-employed by my own Web Hosting business (also offering Domain Names & SSL Certificates) for almost 13 years (since 2002) when I came across this book. And while I first had the mind to do so, I had long since decided that I was not meant for college, instead getting a degree in Electronic Engineering Technology from ITT Tech, as it seemed the cheapest and fastest way of getting a decent job that I would only need for long enough to start my own business and quit. ---------- Read the full blog post on how my Landlord Story began at: https://www.andlandlord.com/blog

We were joined in the studio today by Dr. Chris Coutts, Fauquier Campus Provost & Brandy Boies, Director of Marketing and Outreach from Lord Fairfax Community College to talk about the about their Knowledge 2 Work program and the benefit it will have to those affected by the ITT closure and subsequent bankruptcy filing. We discussed the circumstances surrounding their closure and the difficulty they will have in transferring credits to another college or university. LFCC offers their Knowledge 2 Work program as a perfect solution since it's a Competency Based Education program that allows students to translate their skills, knowledge and work experience to "credits" so to speak. This applies not only to former ITT Tech students but anyone looking to advance their education. For more details about their program, visit their website: http://www.lfcc.edu/river
ITT Tech’s bankruptcy could mark the beginning of the end for for-profit colleges and universities. Colleges and universities that are designed to make a profit could soon be a thing of the past, as federal regulators have begun zeroing in on the industry’s habit of exploiting students. The last example of this is ITT Tech, which recently filed for bankruptcy after losing access to federally backed student loans. In this episode of Industry Focus: Financials, The Motley Fool’s Gaby Lapera and John Maxfield discuss the latest developments in the for-profit education space.

April decided to return to school In 2009 to study Criminal Justice at ITT Tech, while she continued her writing. After becoming the president of a chapter in her school, she graduated in 2010 with highest honors. Synopsis Last winter, on a frigid afternoon I got a chance to sit down with 2 of my favorite Iowa locals, Kevin and Kenneth to talk about the tenuous relationship between QA and Information Security. Earlier in the day I had given a workshop on software security testing (of the web variety) to a ViViT user group, and with that topic and their questions/concerns fresh in my mind I settled down for a 30 minute conversation with Kevin and Kenneth ... we essentially continued the conversation from Episode 3 (please give that a listen if you haven't yet to get a background). Some of the questions we tackled included "Which team within the software development or security organization is best positioned to test the security of applications?", and "Can Information Security ever really thoroughly test an application without the full context?" ...and much more. Give this episode a listen! Guests Kevin Riggins - @kriggins - Kevin is a veteran of the Information Security community with many years experience in vast IT systems and a quality, development and systems background as well. Kenneth Johnson - @patories - Kenneth has been in the Information Security field for the last six years, with five of those years working as an IT Analyst for Principal Financial Group. He graduated in 2007 with a BS degree in Information Systems Security from ITT Tech, and he is currently attending Iowa State to pursue a Ph.D in Information Assurance, with a specialization in Digital Forensics, Incident Response and Malware Analysis.
We will not try to kill The Metal as we take on Tim Schafer's Brutal Legend on the Xbox 360 live from CC Gaming in Kennesaw, GA! We play both singleplayer and then attempt the multiplayer, but we wind up going back to the story. There are LOTS of story spoilers from the first few hours of the game here, so be warned! We also talk with ITT Tech Kennesaw about their new gaming club and the events they have going on there, as well as discuss our new relationship with the Entertainment Consumers Association.
