A listen back... Waaaay back... to a popular song from 1919. "All Quakers are Shoulder Shakers" .... sung by the "All Star Trio" and a second version played by the " Wendling, Kalmar and Leslie Cordes Orchestra.". Interesting to hear what was popular in music in 1919! Track will live in the "History of Radio" Playlist

Unvorstellbar? This week, we present an encore of our 2016 conversation with songwriter and musician Paul Simon. Simon has been the recipient of many honors and awards including 12 Grammy Awards, three of which (“Bridge Over Troubled Water”, “Still Crazy After All These Years” and “Graceland”) were albums of the year. In 2003 he was given a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for his work as half of the duo Simon and Garfunkel. He is in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Simon and Garfunkel and as a solo artist. He was a recipient of The Kennedy Center Honors in 2002 and was named as one of Time Magazine's “100 People Who Shape Our World” in 2006. In 2007, Mr. Simon was awarded the first annual Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. On June 6, 2016, Paul Simon came to the Nourse Theater in San Francisco for an on-stage conversation with Dave Eggers, after performing at the Greek Theater in Berkeley on June 3 and 4. His album “Stranger to Stranger” had been released that same week. Paul Simon's latest work, “Seven Psalms” came out in 2023.

This is the second of two special holiday bonus episodes of Broadway Nation. Just like the first, this is an audio version of a Broadway Nation Live! performance that was given in December of 2019 at the Vashon Center For The Performing Arts on Vashon Island, WA. If you prefer to watch a video of this performance you can stream it on their website at: vashoncenterforthearts.org In Part One we looked at how the Jewish-Russian immigrant songwriter, Irving Berlin -- in addition to being one of the prime inventors of the Broadway Musical -- also created an entirely new category of popular song: “the Christmas Standard”. In this episode we explore how Berlin was aided and abetted in that endeavor by the son of Irish and German immigrants from Washington State who became one of the most popular performers of all time -- Bing Crosby. Along with Judy Garland I call Bing one of Broadway's greatest stars who never appeared on Broadway. But first, we start off with Albert Evans' amazing in-depth analysis of the genius of Irving Berlin, and the inspiration and craft that is behind the most popular song of all time. As you will remember the last episode ended with me introducing Albert and asking him this question: “Why? Why, is White Christmas the most popular song of all time?” You won't want to miss his answer! This live show features musical performances by Cayman Ilika, Eric Ankrim, Chris DiStefano, and Albert Evans. Happy New Year! Become a PATRON of Broadway Nation! I want to thank our Broadway Nation Patron Club members, such as Larry Spinelli, whose generous support helps to make it possible for me to bring this podcast to you each week. In March, we reported how the previous week's chart topper "Apna Bana Le" from the movie 'Bhediya' went AWOL from the chart after Zee Music Company's catalogue was pulled off Spotify. Three weeks ago, the track re-entered the survey, indicating that the service and the label have renewed their licensing agreement. This week, "Apna Bana Le" is at #58, all the way up from #98 making it one of the biggest climbers. Its disappearance in March kicked off a discussion on whether #1 on charts truly means #1 in the country. In India's case, the answer is: not necessarily. We dive into why on this week's short.

This is a request that I decided to record and post this week. Shortly before his death in 1980, Lennon commented that "Although the lyrics don't resolve into any sense, they're good lines. They certainly work ... but if you read the whole song, it doesn't say anything" and added the song was "beautiful – and I never wished I'd written it". Still it has remained the fourth most successful song of all time in terms of royalties paid. I hope you enjoy it.

BlackFacts.com presents the black fact of the day for May 13.Stevie Wonder was born.He is an American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, a child prodigy who developed into one of the most creative musical figures of the late 20th century.Blind from birth and raised in inner-city Detroit, he was a skilled musician by age eight and made his recording debut at age 12.Although still only in his mid-20s, Wonder appeared to have mastered virtually every idiom of African-American popular music and to have synthesized them all into a language of his own.The best of his work formed a vital link between the classic rhythm-and-blues and soul performers of the 1950s and '60s and their less commercially constrained successors. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, and in 1999 he was awarded the Polar Music Prize for lifetime achievement by the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. In 2005 he received a Grammy Award for lifetime achievement. Four years later he was awarded the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from the Library of Congress, and he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014.Learn black history, teach black history at blackfacts.com

Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Mark Twain once said “Humor is mankind's greatest blessing.” If so, as the greatest humorist of his day, Twain himself blessed our country throughout much of his life. How appropriate then, to name our nation's highest award for comedy in his honor. Cappy McGarr co-created the John F. Kennedy Center's Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, which launched in 1998. Appointed to the Kennedy Center board of trustees by Bill Clinton in 1996 and Barack Obama in 2011, McGarr continues to serve as Executive Producer of the Mark Twain Prize and also helped established the Library of Congress' Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. His new book, The Man Who Made Mark Twain Famous: Stories from the Kennedy Center, the White House and Other Comedy Venues, recounts his history with the Mark Twain Prize and what he has learned about comedy—and our most famous comedians—along the way.
Often the funniest person in the room was actually put there by another, even funnier person. Cappy McGarr is an Emmy-nominated co-creator of the Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, and the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. He's one of the few people to be appointed by two different presidents to the Kennedy Center and he joins host Krys Boyd to discuss the creation of the Mark Twain Prize, share behind-the-scenes stories of comedy and politics, and chronicle a life spent in the arts. His book is called “The Man Who Made Mark Twain Famous: Stories from the Kennedy Center, the White House, and Other Comedy Venues.”

Down the Road on the Blue Ridge Music Trails of North Carolina
In a state known for its wealth of eerie legends, few mysteries are as enduring or as puzzling as the Brown Mountain Lights of western North Carolina where strange glowing orbs have been seen. When the early country music star Scotty Wiseman was growing up in the North Carolina mountains, his uncle told him one version of the legend. The lights were said to come from a lantern carried by the ghost of an enslaved man, searching for his master lost on the mountain. In the 1940s, Scotty wrote his song “Brown Mountain Light." The song took off when South Carolina singer Tommy Faile performed it on Arthur Smith's “Carolina Calling” show on Charlotte's WBTV.

Joe & Kristen welcome comedian/author Greg Behrendt (Walking the Room, He's Just Not That Into You) to the podcast. Somehow they get on a tear where they're really roasting The Moody Blues, as Joe begrudgingly tries to make a case for them. Things are capped off with a round of Identify the Popular Song in a Competitive Situation, this time with the 1001 Songs You Must Hear Before You Die.

The Nokia ringtone used to be heard more than a billion times per day, making it one of the most popular songs in the world. We tend to consider cellphone rings as somewhat antithetical to music. There is a whole subset of YouTube videos dedicated to the perverse thrill of watching a delicately beautiful musical moment ruined by the harsh cry of a default ringtone. In this episode, we zoom in on one of these annoying melodies to see if there's not some hidden musical craft present in the ubiquitous bleeps and bloops that envelop us. Later, Charlie shares a piece made solely of this sonic detritus, and a data scientist locates surprising musical patterns in a most unexpected source. He is currently the music director for Idina Menzel. His playing can be heard on film scores, television shows and commercials. He has been featured in a wide range of musical contexts from symphony orchestras to David Letterman's band. His songs have been recorded by Michael Franks, Phyllis Hyman, Vanessa Williams and The Four Tops, among others, and for his own solo CD. He owns Secret Road Studios, a versatile production environment, where he plays, writes, arranges and produces. The music from this podcast is all from Clifford's album Walkin' Into the Sun. It's available here: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/cliffordcarter His full-time professional career began at that time as he worked playing Miami clubs with local and national artists, among them Bobby Vinton, the Coasters and Motown's legendary Four Tops. An offer to tour with The Four Tops took him on the road for the first time. He spent a year with the Tops and recorded three albums with them. With friends Steve Jordan, Hiram Bullock and Will Lee, Carter formed the 24th Street Band in 1978. He was one of the principal songwriters in the band, which made three records, played regularly in New York City clubs and embarked on a successful series of tours in Japan. In 1990, Carter began a long association with singer/songwriter James Taylor as a member of his touring and recording band. Carter's long-time friend and colleague Don Grolnick was keyboardist and musical director for the band at the time, and after playing a supportive role to Grolnick as the second keyboardist, Carter became the sole keyboardist when Grolnick tragically passed away in 1996. He remained in the band through 2001, playing acoustic piano and electronic keyboards. He worked on numerous Taylor releases, including the 1997 Grammy-award-winning Pop Album of the Year, Hourglass. Carter recorded Walkin' Into the Sun, his only solo recording to date, which was released in 1993 and described as "one of the most engaging surprises of the year" by Jazziz Magazine and "a showcase for the keyboardist's excellent musicianship" by Jazz Times. The CD, a jazz/pop hybrid, features Carter's vocal and instrumental songs with a top supporting cast of musicians including Steve Rodby, Will Lee, Mark Egan, Bob Sheppard, Luis Conte and producer-guitarist Tim Weston. A favorite of Late Night with David Letterman bandleader Paul Shaffer, he has often sat in with the band to accompany the show's guest artists, and he's subbed for Shaffer as well. He has accompanied a variety of artists on television programs ranging from The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Saturday Night Live, The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Today Show, Regis and Kathy Lee, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, The Ellen DeGeneres Show and The View to Rosie O'Donnell's 1999 Christmas special and VH1's Storytellers and Live By Request. Among these artists are Al Green, Jewel, Christina Aguilera, the Black Crowes, Smokey Robinson, the B-52's, Rufus Wainwright, the Temptations, Little Richard, BB King, Lyle Lovett, Cher, LeAnn Rimes, Vanessa Williams, Michael McDonald and many others. Carter has played at star-studded music events such as the 1985 reopening of the Apollo Theater ("Motown at the Apollo"), tributes to artists including Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson and Chuck Berry at the Kennedy Center Honors, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Sting's Rainforest Benefit in New York City, and Oprah Winfrey's "A Bridge To Now" celebration honoring 25 legendary African-American women, the concert for the 1st Annual Gershwin Prize for Popular Song honoring Paul Simon, and Fashion Rocks at Radio City Music Hall. His keyboard work has contributed to numerous film scores including You've Got Mail, A Chorus Line, The Object of My Affection, The Muppets Take Manhattan, and the recent remake of Shaft. In 2006, Carter began working with legendary singer Art Garfunkel, and continues to perform regularly with him both at home and abroad. 2009 highlights include appearing at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Cleveland with Little Anthony and the Imperials and Bobby Womack, touring the United States with Art Garfunkel, concerts with Betty Buckley, performances of "Too Hot to Handel" with The Colorado Symphony Orchestra and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and recording a soon to be released CD with leader/drummer Chris Parker. Carter continues to participate in a variety of musical settings from clubs to concert halls around the world, to television appearances and recording sessions. All these of course are his hobby - his main job is to raise his three daughters with occasional time out to watch the river flow.
