Thirsty Forest Animals [00:25] "Nape" Southeast of Saturn: Michigan Shoegaze/Dream Pop/Space Rock Third Man Records TMR-629 2020 All of this, yes. When I lived in NYC in the 90s, so many of my friends were from Michigan that it's amazing some stayed around to develop these sounds. Fauna [05:26] "To Ecstasy" Southeast of Saturn, Vol. 2: Midwest Shoegaze/Dream Pop/Space Rock Third Man Records TMR-750 2022 I also knew a lot of folks from Minneapolis, where Fauna hail from. This track is from their 1992 release Everafter. Glen Campbell [09:23] "Southern Nights" Southern Nights Capitol SO-11601 1977 Glen takes an excellent turn with Allen Toussaint's "Southern Nights" (https://youtu.be/mCscZ2tPFmI?si=0lfs02BFzVpS3aIf) originally recorded in 1975. Glen heard that version and was reminded of his childhood in Arkansas. This single made it to number 1 on the charts, and the album made it as high as 22 on the Billboard 200. You can see Glen playing one of his weirdo Ovation electric 12-strings here on The Midnight Special (https://youtu.be/A8VgyiMAJ9k?si=qdJzW9C6zMMHfQ70). Hawkwind [12:24] "Sonic Attack" Space Ritual United Artists Records UA-LA120-H2 1973 Epically epic space jams with interspersed spoken words as exampled here with "Sonic Attack" written by Michael Moorcock and recited by James Calvert. The sleeve art by Barney Bubbles is a thing of majesty. If space jams are your thing and you've never heard this album, seek it out. Amazingly, this album briefly dented the Billboard 200, making it to number 179. The album jacket is quite a work of art. If you'd like to see the full artwork, join me over on Patreon for video liner notes (https://patreon.com/youroldpalwill). Depeche Mode [17:24] "Dreaming of Me" Speak & Spell Sire SRK 3642 1981 What a difference a decade makes (as compared to Hawkwind)? The debut album by the boys from Basildon, and the only one recorded with Vince Clark (before he moved on to Yaz and subsequently Erasure). This album also just cracked the Billboard 200 here in the US, making it to number 192. This single did actually make it into the US Billboard dance charts, going as high as 47. The English Beat [21:01] "Sooner or Later" Special Beat Service I.R.S. Records SP 75069 1982 (1987 reissue) Everyday someone is born who has never heard "Sooner or Later". Perhaps you are one of those people who has never heard "Sooner or Later". If so, enjoy! This guitar sounds (and this video (https://youtu.be/c-7lBq0zuSM?si=18igG60AbOt239Kf)) have been permentantly etched into my musical brain thanks to the early days of MTV. John Zorn [24:36] "Hico Killer - Long Mile to Houston" Spillane Elektra Nonesuch 9-79172-1 1987 Gritty road story from master blues musician Albert Collins, tinged with Zorn & Co's trademark oddballness. Con Funk Shun [29:19] "Juicy" Spirit of Love Mercury SRM-13806 1980 The Bay Area's very own Con Funk Shun. If you've got a funk/soul album with a track called "Juicy" you know you've got to listen to it. Or at least, I do. Written by the band's guitarist and vocalist Michael Vernon Cooper. The Wonderland Singers [34:07] "Bats in the Belfry" Spooky Halloween Wonderland Records LP-293 1974 They just don't make organ music like they used to, and probably for good reason. At least the cover art is cool. Ustalost [35:20] "III" The Spoor of Vipers Gilead Media RELIC82 2017 Some blackened heaviness from this solo project by Will Skarstad of Yellow Eyes. For those of you who appreciate this style of music, seek out A Wandering Path: The Story of Gilead Media (https://youtu.be/gTZ1HcDtW-U?si=_ann3_mOUWXm2pCq) on a streaming service near you. Missing Persons [40:49] "Bad Streets" Spring Session M Capitol Records ST-12228 1982 This album made a strong impression on my when it came out and I still find myself thinking about it. For this episode's selection, I took a look at the track listings and immediately heard this song in my head. The album made it to number 42 on the Hot 100 and generated 4 singles: "Words (https://youtu.be/IasCZL072fQ?si=VO4X1DpThnxhHYup)", "Desitnation Unknown (https://youtu.be/1WDly1Oc_P4?si=5j2wgoC34DdwEtoU)", "Windows (https://youtu.be/v0vdk3YOvMM?si=31AgmgVzkx6cUeou)", and "Walking in L.A. (https://youtu.be/80WyBxo0Hto?si=DjM4k640jKUOTkhV)". Graham Parker and the Rumour [44:30] "Local Girls" Squeezing Out the Sparks Arista AB 4223 1979 Another heavy rotation video (https://youtu.be/taXvBivGcMo?si=wUPJk-7GLYH8XtUu) from the early days of MTV, despite being made in 1979. The album attempts to explore English suburbia. The album cover features some great typography by Gerard Huerta. Amazing Rhythm Aces [49:48] "Third Rate Romance" Stacked Deck ABC Records ABCD-913 1975 Some fun country-inflected rock from these Memphis gents, sounding almost perfectly mid-70s in a good way. The album reached 11 on the country charts and 120 on the Billboard 200. This single also hit 11 on the country charts and 14 on the pop chart. The band even made an appearance on the second season of Austic City Limits (https://youtu.be/pLz6nIvqB2c?si=nFcMK2tAEEfFjI8n). Love Barry "Byrd" Burton's finger pickin on this. Sly and the Family Stone [53:11] "You Can Make It if You Try" Stand! Epic BN 26456 1969 The mighty Sly Stone and family take a funky turn at this song originally recorded by Gene Allison (https://youtu.be/xiPI7d1y2Co?si=bo1XG2515eGJoYnn) and also covered by the Rolling Stones (https://youtu.be/jz4VO_NiY24?si=1OhUnqa0lAa5JEwM). Fans of Primal Scream will also recognize the tail end of the track that precedes this album closer. Jacksons [56:49] "Blame It on the Boogie" Star Fire Ronco R 3200 1980 As seen on TV! 18 original hits by 18 original artists! A compilation of hits, mostly from 1979. In honor of the late Tito Jackson, I had to go with this uptempo Jacksons single from 1978. Wet Willie [01:00:00] "Keep on Smilin'" Star Trackin' '76 Ronco R 1976-2 1976 As seen on TV! 20 original hits by 20 original artists! While 8 year old me would have been extremely excited about the "Theme from S.W.A.T.", I decided to go with Mobile AL's own Wet Willie. I could have also gone with Abba's "Waterloo" but loyal listeners already know how much I love Abba. Music behind the DJ: "Charade" by Charlie Barnet and his Orchestra
First, Celestia recounts the Skeptic Track at Dragon Con, and Ben discusses a rabbit hole he went down after receiving a press release on some alleged new Champ footage. Then we welcome back folklorist Mark Norman, who discusses black dog folklore (also the title of one of his books), specifically the Barguest or Shuck. Spectral canines can be hellhounds, guardians or neutral entities, and have a surprisingly long history -- as long as humans have been in the company of dogs, one might suppose. Norman discusses the difference between a typical ghost and a "folk ghost," and goes into the very first recorded "haunted house" in ancient Greece and how it led to ghosts being envisioned with chains. From the Hound of the Baskervilles and Sirius Black/Padfoot in the Harry Potter series to a metaphorical black dog representing depression, we look into what's connected to this folklore and what isn't.

Tony and Laurie talk about an official-but-unofficial update on the status of Strange New Worlds season 3 and speculate about what else Paramount+ may be about to announce. They discuss Seth MacFarlane’s comment about being “cautiously optimistic” for an Orville renewal and have some good news for fans of Eaglemoss Hero Collector ships going back on sale. Pivoting to Picard, they take a look at recent posts and comments from Michelle Forbes and Terry Matalas about bringing Ro Laren back in last week’s show, then dive into their review of episode 6, “The Bounty,” where they relished all the reunions, especially from LeVar Burton and Brent Spiner, who make their first appearances of the season, and try to put together where all the story points are headed next. They wrap up with a fun moment courtesy of the German Defense Minister's TNG ringtone, and Laurie plays us off with a tune from Brent Spiner's album Ol' Yellow Eyes is Back featuring backup vocals from his TNG costars.

Narrated by the author, Surrender is an intimate, immersive listening experience, telling stories from Bono's early days in Dublin, to joining a band and playing sold out stadiums around the world with U2, plus his more than 20 years of activism. From moments of classic U2 hits to snippets by The Clash, Patti Smith, Verdi, Johnny Cash and Mozart, Surrender also exclusively features clips of newly recorded re imagined versions of U2 songs including ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday', ‘With Or Without You', ‘One', ‘Beautiful Day' and more, glimpsed for the first time on Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story.

She had the whole basement to herself, which was nice, in a way, because the basement was so large. Not long after moving into her new bedroom, she started seeing a ghostly, female, entity. While it would unnerve her, when she would see that female entity, her paranormal experiences were just beginning. A mysterious wave of acute hepatitis in children is currently under investigation spanning 43 states as well as international borders. These cases are unique in that typical causes for liver injury such as viral Hepatitis A-E have not been found. Though the causal pathway for liver injury is unknown, association with a certain virus of cold-causing daycare fame has been demonstrated in more than half of patients: adenovirus, particularly F type 41. Worldwide most children have fully recovered though around 10% have needed liver transplants and the vast majority have been hospitalized. Today's case explores a 4-year-old who presented to our clinic with scleral icterus and hepatomegaly.View the transcript here:https://www.childrensmn.org/for-health-professionals/talking-pediatrics-podcast/talking-pediatrics-hepatitis-adenovirus-boy-yellow-eyes-9-16-22/

One of my favorite parts about talking to musicians is getting to the heart of why they make the creative and musical decisions that are then committed to tape or performed live. Why did they choose to write their lyrics in a certain manner? Why did they record their live album in a historic water tower? How will they reimagine older material for an upcoming performance? The thread among many of these conversations is that they are reflections musicians share on what they've done or will do. This week's conversation with Will and Sam Skarstad - collaborators, brothers and founding members of New York black metal band Yellow Eyes - shares a rare moment of these decisions happening in real time. The two took a break from intensive writing sessions to share observations of how their creative process is unfolding, how they feel about field recordings which have played an important part in creating ambiance and sense of place in past albums, and what they imagine for the follow up to 2019's Rare Field Ceiling. Tune in for this great yet chilling episode. Be sure to follow us on social media, rate the show and contact us if you would like to be on the show! Sleep paralysis - a feeling of being conscious but unable to move. It occurs when a person passes between stages of wakefulness and sleep. During these transitions, you may be unable to move or speak for a few seconds up to a few minutes. Lucid Dreaming- A lucid dream is a type of dream where the dreamer becomes aware that they are dreaming. During a lucid dream, the dreamer may gain some amount of control over the dream characters, narrative, or environment; however, this is not actually necessary for a dream to be described as lucid. Astral Projection- is a term used in esotericism to describe an intentional out-of-body experience that assumes the existence of a soul called an "astral body" that is separate from the physical body and capable of traveling outside it throughout the universe. John Ringo brings fighting to life. He is the creator of the Posleen Wars series, which has become a New York Times best-selling series with more than one million copies in print. The series contains A Hymn Before Battle, Gust Front, When the Devil Dances, Hell's Faire, and Eye of the Storm. In addition, Ringo has penned the Council War series. Adding another dimension to his skills, Ringo created nationally best-selling techno-thriller novels about Mike Harmon (Ghost, Kildar, Choosers of the Slain, Unto the Breach, A Deeper Blue, and, with Ryan Sear, Tiger by the Tail). His techno-thriller The Last Centurion was also a national bestseller. A more playful twist on the future is found in novels of the Looking-Glass series: Into the Looking Glass, Vorpal Blade, Manxome Foe, and Claws That Catch, the last three in collaboration with Travis S. Taylor. His audience was further enhanced with four collaborations with fellow New York Times best-selling author David Weber: March Upcountry, March to the Sea, March to the Stars, and We Few. There are an additional seven collaborations from the Posleen series: The Hero, written with Michael Z. Williamson, Watch on the Rhine, Yellow Eyes, and The Tuloriad, all written with Tom Kratman, and the New York Times bestseller Cally's War and its sequels Sister Time and Honor of the Clan, all with Julie Cochrane. His science-based zombie apocalypse Black Tide Rising series includes Under a Graveyard Sky, To Sail a Darkling Sea, Islands of Rage and Hope, and Strands of Sorrow. A veteran of the 82nd Airborne, Ringo brings firsthand knowledge of military operations to his fiction. Mohit is a gem. He uses his music business, marketing, entrepreneurship and patient experience to advocate for equity in the healthcare system. A system he knows all too well. Mohit lived with Biliary Atresia, a rare disease that affects the bile ducts with no known cause. It’s no joke. About 85% of patients die before they are 2 years old. Mohit spent about 70% of the first eleven years of life in hospital. He experienced medical racism. He had a hard time making/maintaining friends his own age. And at a very young age received a liver transplant. Mohit has been through it all and we’re elated to have him be a part of our community.

Holding it together as the rainy season gets underway in Vancouver with some blistering new black metal tracks from the likes of Yellow Eyes, Liturgy, Constellatia and Abigail Williams. We'll blast some local favourites like Black Mountain, storc, Sand Witch, Hexripper and Syrinx and also revisit some of the year's best death metal with Blood Incantation, Tomb Mold and Diocletian. The legendary Death Angel is playing the Rickshaw on Monday, so we'll dig a classic track from them out of The Graveyard. We'll also be getting hyped the the Vth Circle album release party tonight at The Front in New West, and also do some pre-partying for Alestorm tonight at the Rickshaw. Tune in for this and lots more earth-shaking riffage and skull-shattering drum destruction as the frigid rain purifies a miserable and dying world.
Have you ever been confronted with unexplained glowing eyes? Did you wonder where they came from, and why they were watching you? Today we hear the true ghost story of a woman in a dorm, confronted by unexplained glowing eyes! They write “ I turned the TV on to illuminate my room since I usually keep it dark; I block out the window, so the streetlight doesn't annoy me, and because anyone can walk up to my window and look in, I'm at street level. But I felt like I needed to be able to see the whole room. I didn't even sleep with my back to the rest of the room. But eventually, I fell asleep, trying to ignore the presence — the staring of Yellow Eyes. Like I said before, I don't sleep very well, and I woke up around 4 AM. I went to roll over to have my back to the room when I heard a deep growl. I'm not sure if it was my imagination from a half-asleep brain, but I'm 80 percent sure it was real. I was feeling grumpy that I woke up to that and I basically told it "Not now" and went back to sleep.” To hear more about this real ghost story, subscribe and listen to our podcast, Real Ghost Stories Online wherever you download podcasts! This is a long one but a good one and chock full of entertainment (and that's what she said but she was talking about this podcast episode, not what your dirty mind was thinking). In this bumper issue of the DTABM podcast, the lads break their silence about the new Enslaved album. They talk to the repugnant Bobby Liebling about taking the punishment for his crimes and some of his cellmates. There are discussions about "Big 4"s for multiple metal genres and dream heavy music festival line ups wherein the guys strike upon Manilla Road's influence not only on heavy metal but also on stationary. There are Skype/phone calls from listening weighing in with their opinions on the topics discussed on the podcast. And, of course, there are plenty of awful jokes but there are even more great metal tracks. It's finale time again kiddos! This week Steph & Ally are talking about the two-part season two finale of Supernatural ‘All Hell Breaks Loose Parts One & Two’. Steph makes the mistake of plying Ally with booze while they watched the emotional episodes together. Tears were definitely shed. We learn a lot about Yellow Eyes and his plan for Sammy (and kids like him). In Part Two, Dean makes the ultimate sacrifice for his little brother. We’re on the last two episodes before the finale! This week Ally & Steph are talking about season two episodes ‘Folsom Prison Blues’ and ‘What Is And What Should Never Be’. In episode 19 the boys get arrested, on purpose, to work a case in a county jail where inmates have been dropping dead after the opening of an old cell-block. Episode 20 is a different beast altogether. We deal with a djinn, who gives Dean a glimpse of what his life could have been if Mary had never been killed by Yellow Eyes, but things aren’t as they seem. Uh–Oh ATA Listeners! Cass has gone and poisoned the water hole leading to one of the best episodes of Supernatural that we've seen since Season 5. Yeah, I know at the end of last season Nico and I were ready to consider the show about the Winchester Brothers hunting the things that go bump in the night dead to rights but this week veteran Supernatural writer Ben Edlund picked us up in the Impala and took us on a thrill ride filled with eweey gooey shotgun shattering Leviathans, hallucinations of Lucifer and a shocking cliffhanger that will make you scream All Hell Breaks Loose Part 2 again. So as a result of Sam and Dean getting their mojo back, we've got a special treat for you, a discussion on Supernatural where Nico and I finally get to show you just how excited we can get about the show like in the old days before we started recording this podcast and the Brothers were hunting Yellow Eyes. However, just because our Supernatural (we're not worthy of Ben Edlund) Discussion is the main highlight for this week's episode don't count out our other sections because as promised we provided you with reviews of Doctor Who, Castle, the excellent Season Finale of Alphas, Person of Interest and Fringe that are totally worth listening to especially when it comes to crackpot theories about future episodes. Plus we have our Funniest Moments sections for Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory and Community that will show you why it's worth taking 30 minutes to watch each of these sitcoms.
