Savage shares about his transatlantic adventure taking us back to 1965 on the Spanish island of Majorca.  He recalls traveling through Europe as a student, sneaking first-class ham sandwiches, and a short-lived European romance. After the pair part ways in Paris, he continues alone to Spain and decides to remain there. Danger soon finds him in Majorca's expatriate bar scene. After receiving warnings from a local bar owner, Savage has a tense encounter with a former New York mob boss living in exile. After being followed and threatened, he decides it's time to end his European affair.

The Perils of the Northwest Coast. Guest Author: Hampton Sides. Cook mapped the coastline from Oregon to Alaska, enduring foul weather and perpetual fog. While the Spanish sought to arrest him for encroaching on their territory, Benjamin Franklin ordered American captains to protect Cook's scientific mission. The expedition spent a month repairing ships at Nootka Sound, interacting peacefully with the Mowachaht people. Cook meticulously charted the Alaskan coast, even navigating by the sound of walruses in low visibility. However, upon reaching the Bering Sea, he encountered the "ice blink" and an impenetrable wall of ice, proving the "open sea" theory wrong. The Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge was set aside to protect the fabled Okefenokee Swamp of Georgia and Florida. Tall cypress trees and Spanish moss give the swamp a prehistoric appearance. The Prothonotary Warbler is one of the most striking of the swamp's denizens. Having wintered in the West Indies, a male might return to the Okefenokee and establish a breeding territory. Because it lives down in the realm of trunks and branches rather than up in the leaves, the Prothonotary has adopted an unusual nesting habit for a warbler: it nests in natural crevices or old Downy Woodpecker holes! As our nation nears its 250th anniversary, we reflect on what was going on in the Bay Area at the time. In 1776 California was newly part of the Spanish colony that would later become Mexico. The summer of 1776 was also pivotal in San Francisco's history: construction started on the Presidio and Mission Dolores was founded five days before the Declaration of Independence was signed. Most of the local population consisted of indigenous people and some Mexican settlers. The people, ecosystems and coastline were dramatically different. We look back on the Bay Area in 1776. Full Text of Readings Friday of the Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 375 The Saint of the day is Blessed Raymond Lull Blessed Raymond Lull's Story Blessed Raymond Lull worked all his life to promote the missions and died a missionary to North Africa. Blessed Raymond Lull was born at Palma on the island of Mallorca in the Mediterranean Sea. He earned a position in the king's court there. One day a sermon inspired him to dedicate his life to working for the conversion of the Muslims in North Africa. He became a Secular Franciscan and founded a college where missionaries could learn the Arabic they would need in the missions. Retiring to solitude, he spent nine years as a hermit. During that time he wrote on all branches of knowledge, a work which earned him the title “Enlightened Doctor.” Blessed Raymond Lull then made many trips through Europe to interest popes, kings, and princes in establishing special colleges to prepare future missionaries. He achieved his goal in 1311, when the Council of Vienne ordered the creation of chairs of Hebrew, Arabic, and Chaldean at the universities of Bologna, Oxford, Paris, and Salamanca. At the age of 79, Raymond went to North Africa in 1314 to be a missionary himself. An angry crowd of Muslims stoned him in the city of Bougie. Genoese merchants took him back to Mallorca, where he died. Raymond was beatified in 1514 and his liturgical feast is celebrated on June 30. Reflection Raymond worked most of his life to help spread the gospel. Indifference on the part of some Christian leaders and opposition in North Africa did not turn him from his goal. Three hundred years later Raymond's work began to have an influence in the Americas. Harris Scruggs gives the Panama City offshore report, where bait has been easy to find but bottom fishing has been a grind because of rough weather, dolphin pressure, sharks, and fish moving around. He discusses red snapper, red grouper, scamp, mangrove snapper, king mackerel, and how anglers can improve their odds by carrying good live bait, scaling down tackle, using longer leaders when possible, and fishing less-pressured spots. Harris also covers the heavy sargassum offshore and explains how crews are still picking up wahoo by running smaller-profile jet heads and keeping trolling gear as clean as possible. Justin Reed closes with the Pensacola surf report, where rough weather and dirty water have changed the beach game. He explains how anglers can still find pompano, whiting, redfish, bluefish, ladyfish, and other surf species by using brighter colors, more scent, synthetic baits, sand fleas, and larger cut baits when catfish become a problem. Justin also breaks down how to scout after storms, what surf "structure" really means, why sandbars, troughs, holes, and rip currents matter, and why early mornings or night fishing can be the best way to beat the summer heat.
