In Part 1 of this series, we discussed how heavy and burdensome things can feel in the middle of the night when you are alone with your baby, struggling to function and feeling exhausted.  In Part 2, we ventured into what it's like when anxiety and intrusive thoughts pop up in the middle of the night. Today's focus is on the importance of taking care of YOU, even in the middle of the night. You could feel “touched out” and overwhelmed, forgetting that you need self-care, too. You need to actively and intentionally have a plan. Let's explore this topic further! Show Highlights: Your options in the middle of the night may be limited.  Think ahead and plan for water/snacks while taking care of the baby. Have them available nearby. Consider your personal comfort: blankets, socks, a sweater, or a small fan Plan for other options for music/noise besides doom-scrolling on your phone. After tending to the baby's needs, do some gentle stretches to help your neck, shoulders, and arms relax and release tension. “Are there small do-able things I can do to inject a little more self-care and attention into that hour or so in the middle of the night?” The magic in a slow, deep breath in and out to regulate your nervous system Feeling physically tired and “wired” at the same time Self-care is NOT selfish! Enlist your partner to help—before bedtime. (Dr. Kat shares tips about asking for help in the right way.) If you have that feeling of dread about the middle of the night, find one thing that brings you comfort and calm; add it into your middle-of-the-night practice. Consider using affirmations and meditation for grounding and self-compassion. If you know only one language, you live only once.” ―Czech proverb Did you know that 92% of students in Europe learn another language in school, and nearly a quarter of Canadians can hold a conversation in both English and French. Roughly one out of every two people on the planet knows at least two languages, and three out of four humans don't speak English. (source: ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) That may sound hyperbolic or pie-in-the-sky, but take a moment and consider what a democracy rests upon: civility, acceptance of differences, even if the majority rules, minority's rights are protected, along with a educated populous in vast fields of knowledge. These benefits, as we will talk about in more detail at the end of today's post, not only benefit the individual in the career and life pursuits, they also benefit the social and economic security of a democracy. "Growth in the number of people speaking languages in addition to English creates new opportunities for greater cross-cultural understanding, and integrates different ideas and perspectives in ways that will improve democratic discourse." —The Century Foundation As we get older, the argument is that it becomes more difficult to acquire a new language, and while that can be true, it depends more heavily upon the individual, their cognitive strength, the type of language they are learning (what Group level is it), as well as their awareness about what it takes to learn a new language. Yes, there will be challenges. Yes, you will be required to set aside your ego, and yes, it will take dedicated and consistent effort for at least 500 hours of learning to gain basic proficiency in a Grade I language (French and Spanish are included in this category). Will Doctor the sharpest golf mind in the game gets you ready with all his picks for the DP World Tour Championship Will Doctor returns on Pregame's Golf Preview Podcast to cover the DP World Tour India Championship at Delhi Golf Club, a short, tight thinker's course demanding accuracy and elite Bermuda putting. Rory McIlroy headlines the field at +550 after his Ryder Cup appearance, while Tommy Fleetwood, Ben Griffin, Victor Hovland, and Brian Harman follow on the odds board. Doctor candidly admits his recent slump—down 6.7 units after a rough run of misses in Japan and Spain—but aims to bounce back in India. He reviews poor picks like Eric Cole at the Bay Current, Michael Kim's top-ten miss, and Hideki Matsuyama's near miss on the Japanese leaderboard. Despite Christian Bezuidenhout's top-ten and some solid form from Patrick Reed and young star Angel Ayora, Doctor's recent cards have fallen short. In Spain, Marco Penge won, and Doctor's outrights in the DP and Korn Ferry Tour events all missed, dropping another 11 units. Shifting focus, he outlines Delhi's setup—tight fairways, strategic play, and little need for drivers—and identifies players with precise ball-striking and solid putting as keys to victory. McIlroy's length gives him an edge even with fewer drivers, but Doctor is cautious given Rory's layoff. Fleetwood at +675 is his top choice among favorites due to accuracy, sixth in strokes gained approach, and proven Bermuda success at East Lake. Griffin, despite a stellar season and two wins, has too long a layoff to back pre-tournament. Hovland, nursing a neck injury, is another fade despite elite approach stats, as Doctor avoids risk. Harman fits perfectly with his precision and prior success on Bermuda layouts but is also a pass due to recent inactivity. Doctor's first “pick to place” is Denmark's Jeff Winther top 20 at +260 for his accuracy and positive recent putting form, including a top-10 in India last year. His second placement pick is India's Anirban Lahiri top 10 at +260, praising Lahiri's form from LIV events and strong national open history despite criticizing LIV's limited fields. For outrights, Doctor backs Fleetwood to win at +675, Ayora at 30-1 after consecutive top-tens and improving putting, and Joel Girrbach at 120-1 as a sleeper with renewed iron play and putting confidence after a solo third in Madrid. During the violent Charlottesville protests of 2017, journalist and author P.E. Moskowitz was only a few feet away when Heather Heyer was killed by an attacking motorist. 16 years earlier, P.E. was in middle school Spanish class a couple blocks from the World Trade Center during the 9/11 attacks. The trauma contributed to panic attacks and, finally, a mental breakdown. As they got their life back together, P.E. began to question a lot of conventional wisdom. Were they mentally ill to have such a breakdown or were they responding appropriately to enormous trauma in a difficult world? Are we looking at potential cures when we should be looking at coping or better yet coming up with ways to stop the horrors from ever taking place? They also questioned the role of drugs in mental health treatment. In the book Breaking Awake: A Reporter's Search for a New Life, and a New World, Through Drugs and in this intriguing interview, P.E. explains how they look at drugs - both the prescription and street varieties - as tools that can be used positively or negatively, to help or harm.
