That's what Maximiliano wants to know. You may have found axolotls in the lush caves of Minecraft, but in real life, they live in the lakes and canals of Xochimilco, near Mexico City. But the species is slowly disappearing from its native habitat. Axolotl veterinarian Horacio Mena takes us on a journey to Xochimilco to find out what scientists are doing to save these adorable amphibians. Linguistic research has its highs and lows: from staging a traditional wedding to learn about ceremonial words to having your efforts to found a village school disrupted by civil war. Linguistic research can also be about highs and lows: in this case, looking at how high and low tones in Babanki words affect their meaning. In this episode, your host Lauren Gawne gets enthusiastic about the highs and lows of fieldwork in Babanki with Dr. Pius Akumbu, who's a linguist from Babanki, Cameroon, and a Director of Research in African Linguistics at CNRS in the LLACAN Lab (the Languages and Cultures of Africa Lab) in Paris, France. We talk about Professor Akumbu's documentation work on a wide variety of topics from the relationship of Babanki to other Grassfields and Bantu languages, what happens when words have a mysterious extra tone that is only produced under the right circumstances (floating tones), to that time he staged a false wedding to document traditional wedding ceremonial language – and led to a real couple opting for a traditional-style wedding of their own. We also talk about the process of founding a school in his home village to ensure that children have access to primary education in their own language. OREGON IS A state with more than its share of buried-treasure legends. But the one that gets the most attention, and until fairly recently attracted by far the most treasure hunters, is the lost Spanish gold of Neahkahnie Mountain. Like most buried-treasure stories, it's a near certainty that nothing is there. But unlike most treasure stories, it seems likely that something real once was. The story of the lost Spanish gold has been passed down and around through Natives and fur traders and later augmented for maximum drama by professional storytellers at Ben Holladay's Seaside House resort. It's even been riffed on (sort of) to create one of the most beloved blockbuster movies of all time — I am, of course, referring to “The Goonies.” Today, there really isn't an official version of the story. But, this is as close as I can come to summarizing the most common version: Sometime in the 1700s, a sailing ship put into Nehalem Bay.... (Nehalem Bay, Tillamook County; 1600s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/2507a1008d-spanish-gold-of-neahkahnie-702.085.html)

In a groundbreaking conversation about childhood development, author David Epstein reveals why pushing kids into early specialization might be doing more harm than good. His book "Range," now adapted for young readers, challenges traditional thinking about success and personal growth. Epstein argues that children benefit tremendously from exploring multiple interests rather than narrowing their focus too quickly. Drawing from research across sports, science, and personal development, he demonstrates that a broad range of experiences creates a more robust foundation for future success. The discussion highlights a critical problem in modern parenting: the intense pressure to excel in specific activities from an incredibly young age. Whether it's travel sports teams for seven-year-olds or hyper-structured academic programs, these approaches can actually limit a child's potential rather than enhance it. We also speak with Brazilian-American author Anna Sequeira about her new children's book "Vera la Valente is Scared," which explores the nuanced concept of bravery through the story of a young girl confronting her fear of roller coasters. Drawing from her personal experiences as a multilingual educator and mother, Sequeira shares how the book teaches children that true courage isn't about fearlessness, but about understanding and respecting one's own limits. With a background in writing both in Portuguese and Spanish, Anna emphasizes the importance of cultural representation, language learning, and helping children feel proud of their heritage, all while weaving humor, imagination, and gentle life lessons into her storytelling. Tune in here to this Friday edition of the Brett Winterble Show! Today, we're joined by RNC Hispanic Communications Director Jaime Florez to discuss Hispanic Heritage Month and how President Trump’s policies are positively impacting the Hispanic community. Florez begins by praising President Trump for his efforts to curb illegal immigration, specifically addressing those crossing the border unlawfully. He notes that, in some cases, up to 70 percent of migrants did not speak Spanish, suggesting that many were coming from regions outside Central America or Mexico. According to Florez, these individuals were competing for jobs that Hispanic Americans have held for the past forty to fifty years. Toward the end of the conversation, Florez emphasizes that Hispanic immigrants who are in the United States legally take pride in celebrating their heritage—and, in doing so, contribute to that cultural richness for the country. He adds that legal Hispanic immigrants are also committed to defending America’s future. Florez believes that those who have gone through the legal immigration process often possess a deeper appreciation and love for the United States, sometimes even more so than those who may take that love for granted. Join us as we trace the codex's incredible journey across three continents and explore how this accidental colonial record has become a powerful, and controversial, tool for reclaiming Filipino identity today.

How do new ideas and beliefs take root when they cross cultural and linguistic borders? In seventeenth-century Taiwan, both Dutch and Spanish missionaries tried to replace Indigenous gods, practices, and laws with their own Christian traditions. Christopher Joby's Christian Mission in Seventeenth-Century Taiwan: A Reception History of Texts, Beliefs, and Practices (Brill, 2025) explores this moment in history through a new lens: reception. Rather than focusing only on what missionaries brought, he looks at how Indigenous communities responded. Central to the story are experiments in translation and text-making, including ministers creating prayers and catechisms in local languages, and the invention of new scripts.  The legacy of these efforts stretched far beyond the seventeenth century, too. Some texts continued to shape religious practice in Taiwan after the Dutch were expelled in 1662, while others circulated in Europe, informing how outsiders imagined the island. By tracing these journeys, Joby shows how Taiwan's early missions were not just local episodes but part of a much larger global history of translation, improvisation, and exchange. This book will be of particular interest to scholars of early modern Taiwan, the history of Christian missions, and the global circulation of texts and ideas. And if you are interested in learning more about his work, you can listen to Joby's earlier appearance on the New Books Network to talk about an earlier book, The Dutch Language in Japan (1600-1900), here.  Learn more about your ad choices.
