Being in administration doesn't automatically make you a leader. Being a leader doesn't always mean you're in administration. An administrative position doesn't necessarily mean a position of leadership and this can be key in how you communicate with your team and those who report to you. Being able to remain humble and continue to focus on your team and developing their human capital will be a game changer in how you interact with staff and the people you serve. We discuss some of the ideas around how you refer to yourself and your interaction with your team. About Donya Ball Dr. Donya Ball is a leader, author, and national keynote speaker. She currently serves as a superintendent of schools in California and, for over two decades, has been a change-maker in public education. Dr. Ball is a professor of both educational administration and teacher education. She is passionate about studying, writing, and speaking on overcoming leadership hardships. Her first book of the leadership series, Adjusting the Sails: Weathering the Storms of Administrative Leadership, was published in 2022. Her second book, Against the Wind: Leadership at 36,000 Feet will be released this January. What You'll Find in this Episode with Donya Ball Donya starts with a story about her experiences working through various positions and the fact that we tend to talk a lot about “the stuff,” but there isn't enough “real talk” in books. She wanted her work to get to the real talk. We call that “real talk for real leaders.” Listen to Donya's thoughts on why we're so reactionary in educational leadership. She has unique ideas about writing and conveying her message, particularly how she combines her love for reality TV and what needs to be in books for school leaders. One “sail” we talked about adjusting is the negative reviews in books. Joe tells the story of how TheSchoolHouse302 was born because it relates to Donya's take about the need for “real talk.” One inspiration for her book is the need to discuss career rejection; it happens, but not enough of us are actually talking about it. Don't miss her story about her dad who was born in Iran and how he had to establish a new life. We all need to become fighters! Donya talks about the need for branding…our perception of ourselves is not always in alignment with the public perception of us. Listen to her describe how branding is an obstacle and how we need to do an assessment of our social media accounts. What message are we sending to our school community? Donya says that we need to embrace the crises when they occur, not shield ourselves and others from them. Don't miss her analogy for the three types of leadership strategies with social media. Dismissive Passive Engaged Donya tells us to follow Roni Habib at eqschools.com for inspiration and aspiration in the space of leadership and personal well-being. Great leaders ask this question daily: “Are my people taken care of?” This transcends resources, facilities, pay, etc. She wants to know if those she leads truly feel taken care of. Don't miss what she says about “raw, authentic, heartfelt conversations.” Donya wants to master the art of patience. Joe says that TJ is not a person to ask for help in this area. She talked about growing as a leader and why it's imperative to surround yourself with people who are different from you--political leaders, community leaders, thought leaders in various fields. She delivered a great call-to-action: We need to get outside of our comfort zones when it comes to bringing people into our circle. She recommends Blindspots: Hidden Biases of Good People for school leaders who want to uncover their own biases and move past them. Donya admits that she used to think about short-term results and getting quick wins on accountability metrics, but she's shifting her thinking to more long-term approaches to teaching, learning, and leading that have a lasting impact on the world. Episode Description: Her father's legacy of kindness has profoundly impacted the life and work of Pamela Ballard. Pamela is the Chief Executive Officer of the Community Service Council (CSC) in Tulsa, OK. After 80 years, Pamela is the first female to hold the position of CEO with the CSC. The driving motivator of the CSC is “Improving Oklahomans' Lives through Research, Planning, and Action.” Pamela brings 31 years of management experience from the non-profit and banking sectors to her role and the mission of the CSC. The CSC serves the marginalized through numerous programs and resources focusing on particular demographics and the needs within those communities. The CSC offers veterans' services, a fatherhood initiative, services to mothers and children, a childcare resource center, and the 211 non-emergency 24/7 call line for those who need help with rent, utilities, food, diapers, etc. Arguably, the most important thing that Pamela brings to the CSC is her faith and the spiritual legacy of her father. For Pamela, a life lived in the service of others has been a lifelong journey shaped by the impact of her father who is a minister. He demonstrates what a life devoted to and marked by Christ and his love for us and others ought to look like. Life is simultaneously adventurous and challenging, particularly in the non-profit sector. In the midst of all the needs that the CSC exists to meet, the importance of kindness and the impact that can have cannot be overstated. As Christians, we need to keep in the forefront of our lives and callings the centrality of loving God, loving ourselves, and loving others. As Pamela says, “you can't love from an empty vessel.” When we get these things right, we can leave behind a legacy of kindness to our families, friends, work and faith communities. In this conversation, you will hear: The impact and importance of a Christ-centered legacy of kindness. Our speech and actions can have either positive or negative effects at home and in the workplace. The importance of developing leaders. Making hard calls to consistently walk in integrity and be in line with our mission. The transformative power of giving as we invest in God's work in the world. How pie-baking contests and other creative events can be the means for raising awareness and fundraising. The greatest opportunity that non-profits, and particularly faith-based entities have is to show love in kindness. Welcome ladies to The Real Estate InvestHER Show takes a deep dive into how to reach one's full potential with our special guest Nada Lena Nasserdeen. Nada is a highly experienced college professor and former education corporation executive. She has a Master's degree in Administrative Leadership and has traveled the world as a singer and motivational speaker, appearing on TEDx Talks, The Female Quotient, and more. Nada has mentored nearly 50,000 individuals on self-empowerment, career strategy, and soft skills through her company, Rise Up For You. She has also worked with Fortune 500 companies and small businesses and has been recognized as a 40 under 40 professional and Women of Influence for Entrepreneurship. Through her five-step process and discussing building a relationship with oneself, Nada explains why potential is often ignored due to our negative thoughts and lack of confidence and the importance of tapping into personal potential and the six pillars of life: self-worth, career, romantic life, health, relationships, and money. Nada shares her story of going through many life challenges, from being a performer to an executive to losing everything after getting married. Ultimately, she learned that it is not the quantity or technical skill of what you do but the depth of experience that matters. This conversation explores the idea that living with the intention of dying empty – having done everything one wanted to do in life – is the most effective way to reach full potential. With advice on how to create more urgency within oneself and focus on personal growth rather than trying to please others, this episode encourages listeners to take time for self-reflection and identify people who will help them reach their goals by committing to themselves. Join us for this inspiring conversation about finding self-love and faith even in difficult moments so you can build a life you are proud of! Keep trying. Keep going.” (19:47 - 19:54)· “You make the career; the career doesn't make you”. (20:32 - 20:35)· “To tap into your potential, write down what you want, why you want it, how you going to get there, who is going to be there with you, and what are your non-negotiables right now. Check it out. In today's episode, our guest is Nada Lena, founder and CEO of Rise Up For You, Leadership and Career Confidence Coach, #1 Best Selling Author, and a 2x TEDx Motivational Speaker. With over 10 years of experience as a college professor and former top executive for an education corporation, Nada understands the importance of fusing education, empowerment, and leadership as she works with her clients and speaks to audiences worldwide. She has toured the world as a singer, has a Master's degree in Administrative Leadership, and has coached and mentored close to 50,000 individuals around the world on self-empowerment, career strategy, and soft skills. And today, she is going to share with us how she rises after a dilemma and helped other people to be successful. [4:58] Why should we listen to you? I have a great balance of experience, hard work when it comes to schooling education. I think life experience and what we call street smarts are really important. I also think that showing discipline around a certain topic, and competency is important. And there's a combination of both. [06:09] When was the time you're stumbling? I used to be a performer. I used to tour around the world as a singer. I did that for about eight years. And when I got doing that got done doing that, I came back to California. I became an executive. And then I resigned and I let go of all that stuff because I got married, and I moved out of the country. And within two weeks of being married, my husband said he wanted a divorce. All I have is $100. And I just it was embarrassing and shameful. [08:07] The second thing is leadership. I was a performer and an executive, with no idea about entrepreneurship, nothing about building a business. And with $100 I came back, and I just started building because I understood that I could figure out anything. So I might have lost everything externally. But I still had my health, I still had my mom, and my two brothers, and I still had my mind, and you can do a hell of a lot with all of that. [10:50] Where do you think that strength came from? The number one thing is confidence. Confidence is important. Our company is constantly researching this 82% of professionals today struggle from confidence. They say it's their number one challenge on 82% of the workforce. They're saying that their number one challenge is confidence or confidence related. The second thing is gratitude and having a belief in something beyond yourself. When you have that you're able to recognize when things are out of your control. There are some things in life that you just can't control. You need to be able to bounce back and bounce forward. [12:42] What do you think that you learn those moments? The biggest thing I've learned, and I wrote my whole book about it is “what is success?” It's not just about making money and buying your dream home. All the things that bring positivity within yourself to are also important. The big moment for me while I was doing this was recognizing that success is not what society paints it to be sometimes, and you have to dig deep to figure out what it means for you. [14:49] How did you stay that path? It comes down to confidence. You have to value your voice more than other people's voices. It does come back to that tenacity. [16:40] Why it was important for you to have a clear mind? I believe that we're all put on this planet to elevate the human condition to elevate humanity. But we cannot do that unless we start within first. And that's why I wrote the book rise it for you. I think it's important that we all can provide value to other people. But the most common mistake that we make is that we try to do that without doing it for ourselves first. And then we end up pouring from an empty bucket. [18:31] What do you see becomes like the biggest initial hurdle for people? There are two things: The first one is accurate self-assessment. If you can't see it within yourself, then it's hard for you to make that shift. And sometimes people don't understand that you can't see their verbiage or their thoughts. [19:36] The second challenge is taking the action, experience, and then education. Those things can be unstoppable when you take action. The second biggest challenge is making the shift and changing the behavior so that you can create the transformation within yourself and other people. [20:38] Who is your typical client base? We have two divisions in our company. We have a corporate division, we work with small, medium, and large businesses that are struggling with company culture, and really need to help with their teams and their leaders and just enhancing culture on a people development level. Another half of our clients are working professionals that are leaders or business owners that are trying to move that needle and they don't know-how [21:41 ]Where have you found a mistake where you need to rise? It's empathy. I have to recognize that everybody has their journey. You have to be careful to understand that not everyone's motivated the same. Empathy has always been something for me that I have to work on. It doesn't come naturally for me. [23:45] How do you address struggle in real-time? I have an amazing tribe around me. And I have them assess me. I give them what I call a 24 point assessment, we use it on our clients. So the things that we give our clients. I'm constantly being assessed and getting feedback from other people. And I let them keep it anonymous if they want. [25:45] What promise did God make to the world when He created you? You really can reach your full potential. And it starts with you. And it starts with confidence. And I think that's what my gift is when I came to this planet. When the COVID-19 pandemic began and schools around the world started moving classes online, it was an incredibly disruptive experience for many. Students at every age level found themselves having to adapt to a new way of learning, and the same was true for teachers, some of whom had never taught online before. Now, nearly a year later, online instruction remains the norm for many. So how are we doing? Are students succeeding in the new learning environment? Will online classes be as taught as frequently when the pandemic ends? On this edition of UWM Today we are going to try to answer those questions as we talk to one of the national leaders in online education — Simone Conceição. Conceição is professor and chair of UWM’s School of Education’s Department of Administrative Leadership. She has spent the past three decades researching how technology can transform the classroom experience.

A big problem today in schools is how they can be so different in their approach to IEP teams and their approach to inclusion. How are the Administrators, the Principals, and the Directors of Special Education addressing their programs? What are their philosophies on inclusion and special education, and how are they setting the stage for their teachers? How are we going to reform the education system that seems to have so many problems? Amanda and Vickie discuss all these questions and more with today’s guest, Dr. Jackie Wilson, from the Delaware Department of Education. Dr. Wilson discusses her 40-year career in education, her position as the Director of the Delaware Academy for School Leadership, and the Special Education Administrative Leadership (SEAL) Program, an innovative way to train those administrators who are in charge of Special Education programs at the local level. Dr. Wilson was integral to the development of the program and her passion for the children it affects is apparent. She will be invited back at year-end to discuss the results of the program and how neighboring states might benefit from creating and implementing similar training. Show Highlights: Dr. Wilson shares the history and an overview of The Special Education Administrative Leadership (SEAL) Program. In developing SEAL, her department looked for ways to work with current policy to leverage it and to not see policy as a barrier to doing good work. If it was a barrier, then it needed to be changed. There were two strong partners in the development of the SEAL Program: The Center for Disability Studies, experts in Special Education. The Department of Education, the regulators. This program is accepting applications now to begin classes in the Fall. The 18-month program will lead to Delaware Certification as a Special Education Director. For this year, there will be no charge. For next year, the charge will be about half of what it would be to go get a Master’s or Doctorate for this program. It’s important to design a set of competencies about what you want people to know and to be able to demonstrate at the end of training. We need to build a group of Directors who understand they must educate their Principals, who are those leading the Special Education support with their teachers. Dr. Wilson addresses the benefits of early intervention. A parent should be an advocate, a collaborator and feel like they’re a part of the IEP team. The “Professional Learning Network” is where 10 school teams in Delaware come together and network, and discuss what works and what doesn’t. The Directors in the SEAL program will be learning the law but they will also be learning instruction and how kids, particularly children with learning disabilities, learn. Dr. Wilson offers suggestions for those who want to model this program in their own state. Links/Resources: Thank you for listening! Ready For Takeoff - Turn Your Aviation Passion Into A Career
Caroline Johnson was born and raised in Colorado Springs, CO, with her older brother, Craig and parents Marty and Nancy. Her childhood was full of skiing, hiking, biking and an array of team sports to burn her relentless energy. In high school she caught the travel bug and studied abroad in Germany, thriving in the foreign culture and absorbing as much of the experience as she could. After graduation, she traded the mountains and her skis, for the bay and a sailboat, as she embarked on the adventure of a lifetime in the Navy. She began her military career at the United States Naval Academy in 2005, bristling against the strict rules and regimented life but loving the challenge and the friends she met along the way. Upon graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Economics in 2009, she joined the elite Naval Aviation community and began flight school in Pensacola, FL. In 2011, she was awarded her wings of gold and designated a Naval Flight Officer, more specifically an F/A-18 Weapons Systems Officer. Finishing at the top of her class she was awarded the Paul F. Lawrence award as the #1 strike fighter graduate and also recognized as the overall Top Graduate. Caroline flew F/A-18 Super Hornets as a member of VFA-213 the World Famous Fighting Blacklions and she embarked on the USS George H.W. Bush, deploying for 9 months in 2014. On her historic deployment, Caroline and the Blacklions flew in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Inherent Resolve seeing action in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria. Her squadron employed the first weapons on ISIS in Iraq, conducted the first ever US strikes into Syria, and Caroline was the first woman to neutralize ISIS from an F/A-18. At the Blacklions, Caroline completed her SFWT level II, III, and IV qualifications, she earned her Combat Mission Commander designation, and she also graduated with honors from the University of Oklahoma with a Master of Arts in Administrative Leadership. During her final tour on active duty, Caroline returned to the United States Naval Academy, where she taught leadership and recruited the next generation of aviators as the Aviation Operations Officer. Currently in the Navy Reserves, Caroline continues her service as an advisor and liaison officer.
