GB2RS News Sunday the 25th of September 2022 The news headlines: RSGB Convention 2022 New RSGB EMF Calculator App Remote Examination Invigilators Wanted   The RSGB has published the draft programme for its annual Convention. There are over 50 lectures planned for the weekend so there should be something for everyone to enjoy. This is the Society's first hybrid event where some of the lectures will also be live-streamed. Further details of that live stream will be added to the RSGB Convention web page over the next few days. All three levels of UK amateur radio exams will be held at the RSGB Convention and the deadline for booking an exam slot has been extended to Sunday the 2nd of October. You won't be able to book exams on the day and you will need to take your own laptop. For links to the Convention programme and the online exam booking form, go to rsgb.org/convention. The deadline for booking Convention day or weekend tickets, accommodation or complete packages online is also the 2nd of October. The RSGB has issued a Trial Version 2 of its EMF Calculator App. This version removes the restriction on frequencies below 10MHz and the minimum separation of near field boundary. The app is being released as a trial version as the RSGB would welcome feedback from users. You can find the app and more information about the EMF work on the RSGB website at rsgb.org/emf. There will also be a presentation on the update at the RSGB Convention on Saturday and an EMF support clinic on Sunday morning. The next RSGB Tonight@8 webinar is on Monday the 3rd of October when Daimon Tilley, G4USI takes ‘HF on Holiday'. Remote invigilation and online examinations have been a huge success due to the efforts of the team of invigilators. Andy, G6PJZ has achieved the coveted Summits On The Air Mountain Goat award for reaching 1,000 activator points. Andy started collecting SOTA points in 2015. His Mountain Goat-qualifying activation took place from a summit in the English Lake District recently. The provisional results for the last IARU Region 1 50 and 70MHz CW and SSB contests are available. Congratulations to GM4ZUK who was placed first in the single operator 70MHz category and G0VHF/P who has been placed first in the multi-operator section. Now the Special Event News Today, the 25th, the South Eastern Amateur Radio Group, EI2WRC will be active from the Suir Valley Railway Station in County Waterford, Ireland for Railways On the Air. In celebration of the life of the late Queen Elizabeth II, members of the Marconi Amateur Radio Circle will be active as 9H6QE until the 14th of October. The main activity will be on the 20, 17, 15, 12 and 10m bands. QSL direct to 9H1MRC. Now the DX news Stephen, M0CYT will be active on Christmas Island between the 24th of September and the 1st of October. He will be operating on the 10 to 80m bands using SSB, FT8 and WSPR, most afternoons and evenings. He will be using the Christmas Island Amateur Radio Club callsign VK9XX. This week Vincent, K6VVK will be active as FO/K6VVK from French Polynesia. He will operate CW, SSB, FT8, and FT4 on the 160 to 6m bands. QSL via Logbook of The World. Nathan, 2E0HSV is a technician from Port Stanley's radio station and plans to be active this week as VP8AAE using SSB and various digital modes. He plans to activate some SOTA references along the east and west coast of The Falkland Islands. QSL via operator's instructions. Now the contest news The Practical Wireless 70MHz competition will take place today, the 25th, running from 1200 to 1600UTC. Using all modes, the exchange is signal strength, serial number and locator. Today, the 25th, the UK Microwave Group has its 5.7 and 10GHz contest. The contest will run from 0600 to 1800 UTC using all modes. The exchange is signal strength, serial number and locator. The worldwide RTTY Contest ends its 24-hour run at 2359 UTC today, the 25th of September. Operating will take place on the 80 to 10m bands where contest operation is permitted. The exchange is signal report and CQ zone. On Monday, the RSGB FT4 Contest will take place between 1900 to 2030UTC. Using the 80, 40 and 20m bands, the exchange is a signal report and four-character locator. On Tuesday, the RSGB SHF UK Activity Contest will take place from 1830 to 2130UTC using all modes on 2.3 to 10GHz. The exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. On Wednesday, the UKEICC 80m Contest will run from 2000 to 2100UTC. Using CW, the exchange is a six-character locator. On Saturday, the 1.2GHz Trophy and 2.3GHz Trophy both run from 1400 to 2200UTC. Using all modes in the respective bands, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. Next Sunday, the 2nd of October, the DX Contest takes place between 0600 and 1800UTC. Using CW and SSB on the 3.5 and 28MHz bands where contests are permitted, the exchange is signal report and serial number. The 77th Oceania DX Contest will start at 0600UTC on Saturday the 1st of October and will run for 24 hours. The exchange is a signal report and serial number. Next weekend the 432MHz to 245GHz Contest runs from 1400UTC on the 1st to 1400UTC on the 2nd of October. At the same time, the IARU 432MHz to 245GHz contest is also taking place. Using all modes, the exchange is the same for both contests, signal report, serial number and locator. The Worked All Britain DX Contest takes place on Sunday the 2nd of October from 0500 to 2300UTC. Entrants can pick any six-hour period to score points in the contest. The 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10m bands can be used. The exchange is report, serial number and Worked All Britain square, if applicable. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4DDK on Friday 23rd September 2022. Last week saw the solar flux index decline very slightly to 137. The good news is that we have had reasonably-settled geomagnetic conditions. The highest Kp index has been three, but it has often been at zero or one. This is good news as it means that the ionosphere has had a chance to develop. The MUF over a 3,000km path has often exceeded 28MHz, especially in the early afternoons. This will probably improve further as we head into late September and early October. The result is that some good DX has been available. J20EE in Djibouti, Africa has been workable on 10m CW, as has ZD7BG on St Helena. And ZL7/K5WE on Chatham Island is reported to have been “very easy” to work on 40m. The 4X6TU IBP beacon in Givatayim, Israel on 28.200MHz has been audible down to one watt recently, which is very encouraging. Numerous North American low-power beacons have also been audible, including the five-watt K5TLL on 28.298MHz in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. As we head into next week, the Sun will be dominated by active regions 3105 and 3107. Region 3015 is actually the remains of AR 3089. A cluster of sunspots in 3105 continue to turn into view off the southeast limb and for now, they remain mostly stable, however minor solar flares will be quite possible. NOAA predicts that the solar flux index may decline to the mid-120s next week. Geomagnetic conditions are predicted to remain calm, at least until the 29th when the Kp index is predicted to rise to five or even six. A single CME could soon disrupt the calm so don't expect the good conditions to last. And now the VHF and up propagation news. The weather has a noticeable autumn flavour to it lately and the coming week is continuing that theme. As this was being prepared on Wednesday evening, there is a hint of tropo over the southern half of the British Isles, but as soon as a cold front completes its journey south on Thursday, we enter a period of cooler north-westerly winds. This will bring rain and showers and means that for most of this weekend and next week, rain scatter is a good option for the GHz bands. Late in the week, and probably nearer next weekend, we find another high edging closer to Ireland and western Britain, perhaps bringing some patchy Tropo down the western side of the country. A further possibility is for meteor scatter and auroral propagation to present themselves as an option, but see the HF section earlier for the solar details and implications. The Kp index rising above five will be a useful guide for the chance of aurora. There are no major meteor showers in the coming week, although towards the end there may be some early Orionids shower reflections. This shower will peak between the 2nd and 7th of October. It is also worth watching for reflections during the daytime from the Sextantid meteor shower, which is active until the 9th of October. The peak is expected to be around the 27th of September. Good hunting! The Moon will be low in the sky throughout this week and as this coincides with the Moon getting closest to the Earth, path losses will be the lowest. With the equinox now past, the Sun will not appear above the Ecliptic again for another six months. This will make Sun-to-cold-sky noise measurements less easy. If you need to make these measurements, and there are a few EME operators who don't, now is probably a good time to do them before those horizon trees get in the way! And that's all from the propagation team this week.

Während dieser ausgedehnten Flugstunde widmet das Trio sich dem Problem der Faulheit beim Bedienen einer Computer-Tastatur. Was käme da gelegener als den hervorragenden und emsigen Herrn TextExpander die Arbeit für sich machen zu lassen. Unsere drei Piloten geben Einsteigertipps und tauschen sich aus über Tipps und Kniffe im Umgang mit der App. Aber zu allem Unglück wäre diese Episode fast das endgültige Ende des Übercasts geworden. Doch am Ende soll ein sportlicher Wettkampf in der nächsten Folge wieder alle Engel auf derselben Wolke tanzen lassen. Überbleibsel Andreas widmet sich noch einmal den akustischen Strömungen und hat sich in der letzten Woche gefragt: “Wie sieht’s eigentlich mit ‘deutscheren’ Alternativen aus?” Sein Bummelzug durchs Internet hat ihn irgendwie zu Grooveshark gebracht, die wiederum verweisen auf Simfy. Dazu fragt sich Andreas noch, ob die Telekom auch irgendwas eigenes in der pinken Hinterhand hat, und, ob Simfy oder Telekom überhaupt was taugen. Sven betrachtet den Service als Anwohner des “dritten Untergeschosses” was Streaming-Dienste angeht. Ob das so stimmt kann keiner wirklich sagen, die Redaktion verweist deshalb einfach mal auf die bestehende Statistik: Simfy gibt an über 20 Millionen Songs im Angebot zu haben, was durchaus an das Liedgut in den Angebotskatalogen der größeren Anbieter rankommt. Apropos Telekom. Sven ist heute ein klitzekleines bisschen in Meckerlaune und verkündet freimundig die “Bankrotterklärung” der deutschen Telekom… zumindest was Streaming-Dienste und Co. angeht, denn der rosa Riese hat gerade über die Hälfte der hauseigenen “Innovations”-Abteilung gekündigt und bekanntgegeben, dass nichts eigenes mehr gemacht wird, sondern verstärkt Kooperationen - wie auch aktuell mit Netflix - eingegangen werden. Überschallneuigkeiten Viel ist passiert. Die Zeit hat wieder ein paar Haare mehr auf den Zähnen bekommen. Einmal verbeugen bitte – die neuen Geräte und Updates sind da Um nicht aus dem Rhythmus zu kommen, was das Meckern und Kleckern angeht, fasst Pilot F. das Thema HASHTAG BENDGATE zusammen (Randnotiz: Wir sind modern beim Übercast, auch wenn die Flugmaschine alt ist, so kennen wir die vier Linien die die Herzen der Generation X höher schlagen lässt. Als Antipol der Alten schreiben wir das aus Protest aus… natürlich per Snippet). Er schüttelt den Kopf über die jugendlichen Bender und die Technikpresse, denn im Grunde sind keine 10 Leute davon betroffen. Die heiße Luft die durch die Presse hätte wohl auch ein Jahr lang gereicht, um die Perückensammlung der Redaktion trocken zu föhnen. Patrick als inoffizieller iPhone 6 Plus Tester verweist noch einmal auf die Seifenoper mit Apple und der Bildzeitung, welche nach ihrem sauber recherchierten Bentgate-Video von Apple keine Testgeräte und Event-Einladungen mehr bekommt. Um alles rund zu machen und zurechtzubiegen wird diese Neuigkeit offiziell von Berlin abgeschlossen, denn zu dem letzten Statement gibt’s auch noch das passende Webcomic aus der Hauptstadt: Link zum Bild: Comic von Vincent Kunert (aka lolnein.com) Ebenso dramatisch: Das iOS 8.0.1 ‘Updategate’, welches von uns zum Glück keiner miterlebt hat. Tipp hier von Sven, immer vor einem Update kurz die Twitter Timeline checken. Datenkraken-Alarm am Keyboard-ExtenSee… “ion” Diese Überschrift ist nicht nur der Platzhalter für die bisher schlechteste Tagline in den Show Notes, sondern auch die Überleitung zur nächsten fechnerischen Gewitterfront auf dem Radar: 3rd Party Keyboards in iOS 8 penetrieren/zerstören/betatschen eure Privatsphäre. Gut… der letzte Satz sollte zu 1/3 nach Bild klingen – mal will ja mit einer gewissen homogenität schreiben (siehe ↑). Zugegeben, ganz so heftig ist es nicht, aber man kann sich seine Gedanken machen und im besten Fall vor der Installation oder dem käuflichen Erwerb ja mal ein wenig nachbohren und recherchieren. So hat Sven sich aufgemacht und ein paar Datenschutzerklärungen der diversen Anbieter durchgelesen. Gerade bei Keyboards die versuchen euer Geschreibsel zu erraten werden oft Keylogger-Techniken angewandt und somit wandern die Daten an fremde Server weitergeben. Sven ist im Übrigen mit seinen Bedenken nicht alleine. Die Redaktion sieht’s jetzt salopp gesagt nicht ganz so drastisch, klar ist Vorsicht geboten, aber wenn das Keyboard der Knüller ist, kommt es auf das iPhone 2 und gut ist’s. Bei kritischen Passwort-Feldern werden die Drittanbieterkeyboards so oder so umgehend deaktiviert. Wer allerdings öfters nach “Kamelen in Netzstrümpfen” sucht, und wem genau das peinlich ist vor den ganzen digital-stalkenden Groß- und Kleinkonzernen, der darf noch einmal vor dem Gebrauch einer Extension fröhlich drauf losmeditieren, also forschen ob’s was zu beanstanden gibt am Objekt der Begierde. ♡♡♡ Unser Lieblings-Feature in iOS 8 ♡♡♡ Andreas sein Herzchen ist die Document Provider Integration für Dropbox, Box und Co. Es gibt zwar bisher kaum Anbieter, welche die Schnittstelle offiziell unterstützen, aber da wo es funktioniert sieht das ganze gut aus und macht Lust auf mehr – zum Beispiel bei Transmit oder bei Readdles Documents und PDF Expert app. Patrick als Ex-iPhone 5 Besitzer ist begeistert vom “Berühr-mich-sanft” Knopf seines neuen mobilen Handtelefons. Noch verzückter ist der Großgrundbesitzer einer 1920x1080 Pixel messenden digitalen Plantage von der neuen Touch ID Schnittstelle. Diese fordert nämlich nun öfters zum (ab)Segnen mit dem Daumen auf, da populäre Apps wie 1Password, Day One, Evernote und Screens (← Anmerkung Patrick: Es war Screens, nicht der Tumblr-Client) sich nun offiziell mit dem Segen von Apple um mehr Tuchfühlung bemühen dürfen. Lifehacker hat sogar noch ein paar Anwendungen mehr in Petto, welche die Geschichte bereits unterstützen. Touch ID und 1Password mögen sich auf Svens iPhone 6 nicht so oft wie er das gerne hätte. Es gibt wohl hier und da mal Probleme… und das trotz korrekter Einstellungen (Master-Passwort auf 30 Tage gesetzt = √). Andreas wittert da als passionierter Kritiker vor dem Herren seine Chance und erwähnt ganz am Rande mal die mangelnde Verschlüsselung beim zuvor von Sven hochgelobten Day One. Das alles hält Patrick nicht davon ab trotzdem Happy zu sein mit der Integration an sich. Das Parken von Email Entwürfen am unteren Bildschirmrand ist Svens ungeschlagener Favorit. Andreas gibt noch einen Tipp zum alten iOS zum besten, welchen sonst keiner hier kannte: Lange auf den “Neue Email” Knopf drücken und man bekommt automatisch seinen letzten Entwurf angezeigt. Die Redaktion hält sich da komplett raus, denn wer lieber Mail.app statt Dispatch nutzt, mit dem redet man ja am besten gar nicht…. Der Tipp von Andreas war so unbekannt, dass Sven nachschiebt, dass man eigentlich bei jeder neuen iOS Version mehr Sachen ausprobieren muss (fünffach tap, 10 Stunden halten, etc.), um so auch alle neuen Kniffe zu entdecken, die das nigelnagelneue OS so kann. Die Redaktion nimmt das zum Anlass, hiermit für die nächste Folge TEIL 2 unserer Lieblingsfeatures anzukündigen. Da das nun offiziell und unsterblich “auf der Linie” steht (sprich Online… den heute ist Tag der tollen Wortspiele), kann sich darum auch kein Pilot mehr drücken. Tschaka-Boom. NIXIE – Das Tor zur Hölle Patrick stöbert ja immer gerne nach Gadgets die es noch nicht gibt oder die neue Ideen zu Tage fördern. Heute im Programm, so unnötig es ist: Das erste tragbare Kamera die fliegen kann. NIXIE YouTube: Make It Wearable Finalists Wie schon angekündigt, hat Sven heute ein saures Hirse-Bonbon im Mund und mutmaßt, dass der Name wohl Programm ist. Und das hier fällt ihm auch noch aus der Lippe: Was ein grandioser SCHEIßDRECK! Sven Fechner Was der Hörer nicht weiß, an dieser Stelle wurde die Aufnahme unterbrochen, denn wüste Beleidigungen wurden aufgerufen und beide Piloten drohen dem jeweils Anderen an, aus dem Cockpit zu springen (ohne Fallschirm) und einen Podcast namens der ‘Uber-Ubercast’ beziehungsweise ‘Noch-Besser-Als-Der-Uber-Ubercast’ ins Leben zu rufen. Beide neuen Podcast sollen natürlich ebenfalls mit Andreas als Co-Pilot gesendet werden. Wutentbrannt wird gemeinsam die Entscheidung gefällt, das Projekt Ubercast umgehend einzustellen und nur noch diese Episode so halbwegs zu Ende zu bringen. Doch selbst dazu kommt es nicht, als Andreas einwirft, dass die Drone ja wenigsten thematisch zum Übercast passt, platzt Sven endgültig der Kragen. Er wirft Patrick an den Kopf, dass er seine Fluglizenz wohl im Lotto gewonnen hat und verlässt das Studio. Weit nach Mitternacht klingelt es in Berlin an Patricks Haustür und ein tränenüberströmter Andreas steht vor der Tür, welcher Patrick überzeugt, dass der Klügere nachzugeben hat, eben genau so wie es schon die Deutsche Nationalelf damals tat, als Nutella zum zwanzigsten Mal eine Sponsoringanfrage gestartet hat. Gemeinsam mit genügend Erdnussbutter und Schrippen ausgestattet schwingen sich beide auf das Tandem von Andreas und machen sich auf zurück ins Schwabenländle. Es ist mittlerweile 3:33 Uhr in der Früh und in der Villa Fechner wird Sturm geklopft an den Rollläden. Mit dicken aufgequollenen roten Augen, einer leeren Flasche Rotwein in der Linken, sowie einer fast leeren Flasche Port in der rechten Hand macht ihnen Sven auf. Alle drei Fallen sich um den Hals und beschließen das Der Übercast wieder fliegen muss. Happy End. … denkste… den an einem der Folgenden Tage postet Patrick unschuldig auf Twitter ein weiteres Fundstück, welches er sich als interessantes Automatisierungsutensil vorstellen könnte (… gerade auch als Bluetooth-Kopfhörer-Besitzer). Das ganze endet in folgendem Schlagabtausch: [View the story "Kollisionskurs – Teil 2"] Die Geweihe wurde also wieder gestoßen, am Ende hat man sich dann offline bei einem 8-stündigen Telefonat noch einmal ausgesprochen und wieder wiedervertragen², denn… am Folgetag soll die reguläre zuvor so harsch unterbrochene Aufnahme weitergeführt werden. Man einigt sich zähneknirschend, dass man ja Andreas nicht enttäuschen wolle. Muh! Fast eine Woche später darf Andreas also die letzte Neuigkeit des Fluges verkünden, und zwar dass der Markdown Editor Mou nun offen für Crowdfunding ist und so die Version 1.0 erreichen will. Da er so lange Zeit hatte sich eine grandiose Überleitung zu überlegen, ist diese auch entsprechend gut geworden. Respekt dafür (siehe Titel dieser Sektion). Wohin? TE SPACE SPACE => TextExpander »Schatz, wir müssen expandieren!« Nachdem Sven erklärt hat, was das Objekt der heutigen Begierde - TextExpander von Smile Software - so grundlegend macht, nämlich Textschnipsel die man eingibt zu manipulieren, korrigieren oder zu wahren Skriptfeuerwerken umgestalten, steigen wir mit einer kurzen Historie zu TextExpander und seinen deutschen (beziehungsweise schwäbischen) Wurzeln ein. Andreas verrät uns, dass “Textpander” ursprünglich von einem unserer Lieblingstüftler unter den Entwicklern stammt, und zwar Peter Maurer von ManyTricks. Wer lieber erst einmal direkte Hands-on time mit TextExpander verbringen will, der drückt nun auf Pause und klickt den Link oben an, lädt sich die Trial-Version runter und danach geht es bitte wieder zurück zum Übercast. Hit Play. Einstieg – Party auf der Snippetconvention [SNIP-CON] So, nun aber los (Timecode 00:24:00). Zum Einstieg auserkoren wurde die allseits beliebte Diskussion um die Snippet-Konventionen. Wie also starten wir unsere Snippets, ist es der doppelte Anfangsbuchstabe, ein Punkt, Komma, Semikolon oder gar der Vorname vom eigenen Opa? Andreas nutzt gerne .. am Ende als Auslöser. Das soll besonders bei Abkürzungen wie z.B. und bsp. sehr angenehm von der Hand rollen, da man lediglich noch einen Punkt zusätzlich nachschieben muss. Patrick holt weiter aus. Früher waren es bei ihm die Doppelbuchstaben am Anfang die alles regiert haben von eemail für die eigene Emailadresse über ddiv, um ein DIV-Element in HTML (…Krimskrams…) schneller zu erstellen. Für CSS und HTML hat er dann Punkt und Komma verwenden. Ab irgendeinem Punkt in seiner TextExpanderlaufbahn hat Patrick dann der App den Rücken zugekehrt und hat alles mit diesem Skript nach Keyboard Maestro exportiert. Da er das für die Show Notes vorab noch einmal recherchiert hat, dachte er Andreas wollte es ihm gleich tun (siehe Kommentarsektion im vorangegangenen Link), was aber wohl nicht der Fall war wie Andreas in der Show souverän erklärt. Das Experiment mit Keyboard Maestro fand jedoch ein jähes Ende, da der Maestro einfach nicht so zuverlässig expandieren kann wie TextExpander. Nichtsdestotrotz wird TextExpander hier und da noch in Einklang mit Keyboard Maestro benutzt… und mittlerweile wohl auch wieder in der Standalone Version. Seit Patricks Rückkehr zur App wurde an TextExpander geschraubt. Und das nicht zu knapp; nun geht auch sein Lieblings-Trigger SPACE SPACE am Ende des Snippets – das ging wohl vorher nicht… aber halt in Keyboard Maestro. Freude pur. Glückshormone wie beim Inhalieren von Kamillientee werden ausgeschüttet. Des weiteren sind bei den Piloten sinngemäße Abkürzungen geschätzt, zum Beispiel: uc SPACE SPACE für “Der Übercast” km SPACE SPACE für Keyboard Maestro of SPACE SPACE für OmniFocus me@ für die eigene Email Adresse hello@ für die Email Adresse von Patrick’s Blog site SPACE SPACE öffnet eine Fill-In-Popup List mit Patricks Webseiten, sozialen Accounts und Open-ID wwtumb für Andreas sein Tumblelog zett@zc für Andreas Firmenemailadresse lb.. für LaunchBar og.. für “Omni Group” und dann noch ähnliches für die sämtlichen anderen Produkte dieser klasse Firma Wenn wir schon beim Thema Email sind, so denkt sich Sven, kann er die Wogen des vorangegangenen Eklats glätten, indem er auf Patricks ”@@” Shortcut als Text Expander für Emails hinweist. Der funktioniert zwar nur mit Apples eigenem Texterweiterer, dafür aber auch überall ohne Keyboardextensions und “Bäumchen wechsel’ dich” Spiele auf der Tastatur. Ganz heißer Tipp. Auch Sven ist in seiner Lebenszeit durch etliche Kürzelklassen gegangen, da war alles dabei von Punkt, Komm, Strich bis hin zum ausgeschriebenen π. Doch neulich ist er dann über einen einfachen, fast schon viel zu offensichtlichen und doch gerade deshalb genialen Ansatz von Zach Holmquist gestoßen, welcher seine TextExpander Snippets wie “Klassen” wie in einigen Programmiersprachen üblich strukturiert, z.B. me.email me.adress char.apple char.command emoji.poop Zachs Ansatz dürfte selbst Gedächtnis-Grobmotorikern wie Patrick gefallen. Da er aber im Zwist mit Sven liegt, merkt er an, dass genau dieser Ansatz bei Entwicklern ein wenig für Aufruhr sorgte, da es dann zu unbeabsichtigten Ergebnissen beim Coding kommt. Gerade wenn man die Stabilität eines 30-stöckigen Wolkenkratzers einprogrammiert, sollte man die zachinspirierten Snippets deaktivieren. Andreas spielt wieder den Vermittler und weißt darauf hin, dass TextExpander per Hotkey auch eine Suche für Snippets aufrufen kann. Bei ihm ist der Shortcut ⌥F12, bei Sven ⌘⌥⌃+T und bei Patrick ⌘⌥⇧+T. Weitere Hotkeys nutzt keiner der drei Piloten. Allgemeines: Seine Snippets kann man syncen per Dropbox und man kann ebenfalls einstellen, ob man Snippet-Gruppen nur für eine bestimmte Anwendung aktivieren will, in einigen Apps nicht, doch lieber in allen oder oder oder…. Also einfach mal in die Einstellungen schauen und beispielsweise Coding Snippets nur im Code-Editor der Wahl zulassen, OmniFocus Snippets auch wirklich nur in OmniFocus und so weiter – alles je nach Bedarf und eigenem Gusto. Tipp: Zu diesem Thema empfehlen wir auch gerne den hauseigenen Blog von Smile Software, welcher sich diesem Thema auch schon gewidmet hat. Ebenso empfehlenswert ist der Newsletter, welcher im Vergleich zu anderen Firmen echt guten Inhalt/gute Tipps mitbringt. Des weiteren sollen die sehr guten und umfangreichen Hilfeseiten von Smile für TextExpander (in Englisch) nicht unerwähnt bleiben. Kritik auf Abwegen Es ist nicht alles Gold was glänzt. Bevor es nun ans Eingemachte geht - also die Laudatio anklingt - möchte Patrick noch einmal Kritikpunkte ansprechen, welche ihm bitterlichst aufstoßen. Ihm gefallen die vorhandenen Organisationsmöglichkeiten gar nicht gut. Sprich, ihm sind es zu wenige. Er könnte sich vorstellen, dass in dieser App Tags und Smart Folder Sinn machen könnten. Dadurch könnten Snippets auch in mehreren Gruppen zu Hause sein. Alternativ kämen für ihn noch Unterordner in Betracht, um mittels Überkategorien mehr Ordnung reinzubringen. Andreas stimmt zu, dass die UI nur eine bessere Listenansicht ist, dass war’s aber auch schon zum Thema Kritik, denn ihm ist da noch ein super Feature eingefallen, welches bisher noch keine Erwähnung fand und welches im speziellen für die Arbeit in Teams taugt: Snippet-Gruppen sind teilbar. Importiert werden diese gesharten Gruppen dann wie gewohnt, aber (z.B.) von der eigenen Dropbox-URL (also im Finder die Snippetgruppe anwählen und im Kontext sich einen Dropbox-Link generieren lassen. Diesen Link dann in TextExpander importieren). Somit kann dann ein Verwalter für das komplette Team die Snippetgruppe bereitstellen und jederzeit updaten. Da Patrick in der Show nicht die Sau rauslassen wollte, kommt hier noch etwas Senf auf den Keks. Anbei seine weiteren Kritikpunkte in einer formschönen Liste: Auf iOS: Textexpansion hat in anderen Anwendungen Apps immer gut funktioniert, aber in der eigenen TextExpander App war der Wechsel zwischen dem Notizblock und der Snippetverwaltung immer buggy/langsam – egal ob iPhone oder iPad. Es hat ewig gedauert bis gewisse Neuerungen kamen, z.B. die deutsche Autokorrektur, die “ignore on iOS” Funktion, das SPACE SPACE Kürzel am Ende von Snippets. Größter Kritikpunkt überhaupt, da es das beste Feature nach Patrick ist: Fill-in Popup Menu’s. Bei diesen kann leider kein Titel für Listeneinträge vergeben werden wie es unter Anderem bei Launch Center Pro möglich ist. Dort sieht man die vergebenen Name in einer Liste. Die App nutzt dabei folgende Syntax von der sich Smile gerne eine Scheibe abschneiden darf: [list:Telefon|Sven=110|Zettt=112|Ottmar=01906666] Die Verwaltung von Snippets wurde schon erwähnt, aber es wäre auch nett, wenn eine einfachere Deaktivierung von Snippet-Gruppen für einen schnellen Moduswechsel vorhanden wäre (z.B. von Schreiben auf Coden, auf Übersetzten, auf Matheformeln, etc.). Was würde besser in die Kritikersektion passen, als ein Konkurrenzprodukt zu TextExpander. Nichts. Deshalb sei an dieser Stelle der Typinator von Ergonis erwähnt (für den es leider keine iOS App mit der entsprechend ausgereiften API gibt). Basic-Snippets Zu aller erst einmal die “einfachen” TextExpander Snippets (Timecode 00:40:00). Dazu verlinken wir auch sofort auf dem direktesten Weg zu einer sehr übersichtlichen Einführung in eben diese Gefilde von Enrico Schlag (@iEnno_de). Weitere Anwendungsbeispiele bei denen wir immer wieder gerne auf TextExpander zurückgreifen: Email Adressen, Telefonnummern, … Web-Formulare ausfüllen (Wir raten dringend davon ab TextExpander Snippets zum ausfüllen von Logins, bzw. Passwörtern zu nutzen! Kauft euch 1Password dafür.) Sonderzeichen Datum- und Uhrzeiten Korrekturen, bzw. Ausschreibung von klassischen Abkürzungen wie “bzw.” Programmiersprachen-Snippets und Auto-Closing von Klammerpaaren oder Anführungszeichen Sven erinnert sich bei den Abkürzungen von Produktnamen an Shawn Blancs “A Quick Guide to Common Miscapitalizations of Tech Names” und Patrick empfiehlt ebenfalls den Download, sowie seine kleine Sammlung, die mit vielen anderen Goodies in unserer Downloadsammelung am Ende dieses Posts eine Heimat gefunden hat. Außerdem hat Sven noch sein eigenen Set für Email Signaturen: Email Signature pro Account Interne/Externe, bzw. formelle & informelle Signaturen Gruß Formeln (MfG) Des weiteren nutzt er TextExpander wie der Rest der Crew für Namen und andere peinliche Tippfehler, so auch um lange Fachausdrücke und andere Abkürzungen einmal komplett auszuschreiben. Tipp: Das ganze lässt sich auch gut temporär (Snippet-Gruppe ‘Temp’) nutzen, wenn man aktuell an einem Projekt arbeiten in dem diverse komplexe und lange Formulierungen genutzt werden. TextExpander und OmniFocus Selbstredend muss Sven auch oft genug delegierte Aufgaben nachverfolgen. Das macht er natürlich mit OmniFocus und TextExpander, denn simplicity is bliss. Ihr sollt erfahren, welche Programme von uns genutzt werden, und welche Regeln, was für Plugins und Workflows dahinterstecken. Sven schiebt nach, dass Inbox Zero nicht heißen muss, dass man 2x am Tag seine Inbox leerfegt. Das löst auch direkt schon ein Zögern bei Andreas aus, der seine Inbox noch nicht auch nur einmal unbedingt komplett blank haben muss. Was macht man mit Emails? archivieren oder löschen suchen reagieren schriftlich beantworten eine Tätigkeit ausführen und dann beantworten warten Eine beliebte Herangehensweise ist unter Anderem die 3-Ordner-Taktik, wo nur ein Archivordner benötigt wird, ein Ordner für pausierte Emails (z.B. warten auf eine Antwort) und ein zum dritten ein Aktionsordner der als Todo-Ordner fungiert. Patrick hat das eine Zeit lang ausprobiert, fand es aber nicht praktikabel, da ihm zum schnelleren und besseren Auffinden von Nachrichten noch Tags fehlen würden. Eine Suche nach Tags wäre wiederum nur auf dem Mac möglich, nicht auf iOS und nicht in Netz. Das will er nicht. Die Taktik kennt Sven auch, er hat aber mittlerweile die Ordnerstruktur weitestgehend durch Tags ersetzt. Überhaupt ist er kein großer Freund von archivieren und fragt kritisch in Runde ob das zwanghafte Archivieren jeglicher Emails überhaupt sein muss. Bei ihm hat sich ein zwei Wochen Grenze herauskristallisiert – länger hebt er die meisten Mails nicht auf. Passend zum Thema: Merlin Manns Inbox Zero Vortrag. Apple Mail Sven ist unser Mail.app Vertreter. Mit seinen Regeln, Plugins und Smartlisten versucht er uns Apples Lösung schmackhaft zu machen. CC und Mailinglisten unter Kontrolle halten: CC Regel um all Emails bei denen man cc ist in einen separaten Order zu schieben, es sei denn nicht Nachricht ist von hoher Priorität Link zum Bild: CC Regel Mailing Lists als gelesen markieren und in einen separaten Order schieben mit der Möglichkeit festgelegte Verteilerlisten von der Regel auszunehmen Link zum Bild: Mailing Listen Regel Die Regeln von Sven sind alle als serverseitige Exchange Regeln mit Microsoft Outlook für Mac implementiert; allerdings können sie in beinahe exaktem Umfang auch serverseitig bei GMail oder iCloud.com implementiert werden (wie auch lokal innerhalb von Mail.app). Das Lob kommt von Patrick an dieser Stelle, da Sven keine separaten Accounts eingerichtet hat, die ihn im Client dazu zwingen würden die Accounts ständig zu wechseln. Sven färbt alle Mails von Kunden grell-orange ein, damit er weiß was wichtig ist. Wir halten fest: Regeln ≥ separate Accounts. Die “unified Inbox” triumphiert. Bei der Yosemite Beta von Andreas läuft Mail.app zurzeit nicht so wirklich rund, aber er mag das Programm auch… so viel schon einmal vorweg. Andreas setzt für jedes Projekt einen Ordner auf und archiviert diese dann alljährlich lokal auf seiner Festplatte (und schafft so wieder mehr Raum in Email-Client). Plugins die Erste: UniversalMailer Behebt den lästigen Mail.app “Bug” durch den Nachrichten auf Windows Outlook standardmäßig in Times New Roman 16pt dargestellt werden egal in welcher Font man sie abgeschickt hat. Svens Workflow mit MailTags und Mail-Act-On Mail Act-On kostenlose Trial Version, dann 24.95 US$ Deferral Workflow mit Tickle Dates, Mail-Act-On Rules und Smart Mailboxes MailTags Integration OmniFocus Eingebaute Wiedervorlage (@Waiting, @Reply) Workflows mit MailTags und Mail-Act-On: Vollständiger Workflow zur Wiedervorlage von Emails als auch zum “Verschieben” von Nachrichten mit denen man sich noch nicht auseinander setzten kann oder will. Link zum Bild: Tickle on Friday Nicht bereit sich mit einer bestimmen Email in Deiner Inbox auseinanderzusetzen? Mehr Zeit zum Nachdenken von Nöten? Einfach um 2 Tage aufschieben. Link zum Bild: Defer Jegliche Art von Todo-Management im Email-Client selbst ist Andreas fremd, er schreibt wenn wirklich was zu tun ist brav seinen OmniFocus Task, erledigt die Aufgabe und antworten dann. Sven führt zu seiner Verteidigung an, dass er diesen Workflow insbesondere für Micromanagen von Konversationen nutzt die nicht unbedingt Top-Priority sind. Für alles wirklich wichtige nutzt er nach wie vor auch das heißgeliebte OmniFocus. Patrick denkt er kann Sven drankriegen, indem er ihn fragt, ob er auch einen Mac im Berufsleben nutzt, aber weit gefehlt… der Fechner hat/darf/will geschäftlich auch seinen Mac nutzen. Klar, so geht das natürlich alles blendend von der Hand. Anbei, da schon von serverseitigen Regeln gesprochen wird, hier eine kleine Zusammenfassung was mit iCloud Regeln so alles möglich bzw. nicht möglich ist: Limitierung auf max. 99 Regeln. Die Reihenfolge der Regeln ist wichtig. Keine IF/Any Konditionen. Also, einer Regel mehrere Konditionen zuweisen funktioniert in iCloud nicht. In OS X kann man mehreren Emailadressen eine Regeln zuweisen, in iCloud nicht. Apples eigenes Mail Programm kommt für Patrick nicht in Betracht, da es für ihn zu große Unterschiede zwischen den drei Versionen gibt. iCloud Mail ist die abgespeckteste Version geringe Konfigurationsmöglichkeiten bei den Regeln Smartfolders vom Mac werden nicht synchronisiert Mail auf iOS ist ein Mittelding Angewiesen auf die wenigen Regeln die in der iCloud möglich sind Zusatzfeatures wie Thread Notifications und den Today Ordner Smartfolders vom Mac werden nicht synchronisiert Mail auf OS X = super, alles da und erweiterbar Dazu kommt, dass er wie Sven hat er alle Regeln serverseitig angelegt, aber Mail spielt ihm manchmal einen Streich und dupliziert Emails willkürlich. So wurde seine einmonatige Testphase zur Showvorbereitung eine wahre Geduldsprobe. Die Leseempfehlung für schlauere Mailordner gibt’s auf dem Ur-Ur-Ur-43Folders-Blog. Plugins die Zweite: MailPluginFix Behebt das Problem von inkompatiblen Plugins nach einen Systemupdate. MsgFiler Alternative: MailActOn Andere Schmankerl: DockStar - Customize your Mail.app dock icon SpamSieve: Easy-to-use Mac spam filter for Apple Mail, Outlook, Entourage, Postbox, and more Und letzten Endes noch ein Repository mit sämtlichen Plug-ins und Tools: Apple Mail Plugins and Tools MailMate Obgleich Gmail lange Zeit für Patrick der König unter den Mailanbietern und Clients war (… und auch immer noch ist), hat er trotz dem fantastischen Spamfiltering und den Myriaden an Shortcuts seit Oktober 2013 Google den Rücken zugekehrt, um bei Uberspace dann mehr Kontrolle und mehr Privatssphäre zu haben. Altgediente Gmail Regeln Trotz des Absprungs von Gmail hier einmal die genutzten Regeln von Patrick, welche so auch bei Uberspace nachgebaut wurden. Falls ich mich ins BCC Feld eingetragen habe: Matches: from:(here|are|all|my|addresses) ==> Do this: Skip Inbox, Mark as read, Never send it to Spam, Never mark it as important Falls ich mir selbst eine Mail schreibe: Matches: from:(patrick+me@gmail.com) ==> Do this: Star it, Never send it to Spam Falls die Mail was mit einem meiner Arbeitsaccounts zu tun hat: Matches: to:(important|accounts|here) ==> Do this: Mark it as important Unwichtige Mails sofort archivieren: Matches: from:(@itunes.com|do_not_reply@apple.com|usw.) ==> Do this: Skip Inbox Noch unwichtigere Mails sofort archivieren und als gelesen markieren. Das ist praktisch für Mails die mehr einen Archiverungscharakter haben. Eine andere Idee wäre diese direkt per IFTTT nach Evernote zusenden oder diese mit IFTTT zusammenzufassen und in einer Notiz per “append” zu sammenln: Matches: subject:(Cronjob|usw.) ==> Do this: Skip Inbox, Mark as read, Never mark it as important Zu guter letzt hat Patrick noch ca. 50 Regel welche nach dem obigen Schema Mails in verschiedene Ordner sortieren (Design, Audio, Personal, Games, Family, Work, …). Viele Regeln sind doppelt bzw. haben das gleiche Ziel, aber er findet es gut Themengebiete z.B. für Design-Newsletter zu haben. Und noch was… die zwei Spezialadressen für das BBC-Feld: ACT-ON Matches: to:(patrick+acton@gmail.com) ==> Do this: Skip Inbox, Star it, Apply label "1: Act on", Never send it to Spam, Mark it as important HOLD Matches: to:(patrick+hold@gmail.com|patrick+waiting@gmail.com) ==> Do this: Skip Inbox, Star it, Apply label "2: Hold", Never send it to Spam, Mark it as important Patricks Uberspace Setup Patrick nutzt auf Uberspace eine Sammeladresse auf der alle meine Emails ankommen. Alles ist ausgerichtet darauf seine Inbox schnell mit Shortcuts und Swipes auf 0 zu bringen. Die Inbox ist somit der einzige Ort, an dem er was zu tun hat… bis auf das händische kontrollieren des Act-on und Hold Ordners. Eine weitere Besonderheit ist, die archivieren Option in allen Clients zieht jede Email in einen Unterordner vom Archiv. Dieser “Filer” Ordner sortiert dann nach vordefinierten Regel, wohin die Email abgelegt wird, greift keine von Patricks Regeln, so landet die Mail im normalen Archiv. Das ist sein Versuch die extrem guten GMail-Regeln für’s automatische sortieren zu ersetzten. Klappt im übrigen bestens. Das Ziel ist es jede Mail zu überfliegen und nicht ungelesene Mails in Unterordner anzusammeln. Auf iOS muss dann nur noch ins Archiv geswipt werden, oder halt in den Mülleimer. Ein Uberspace Setup ist, wie in der letzten Folge schon angedeutet, etwas ganz Anderes und fernab vom gängigen Einrichten von Emails angesiedelt . Es ist nicht für Jedermann und man muss viel in der Shell rumhüpfen bis es läuft. Bringt man aber das nötige Handwerkszeug mit, so kann man ein Mail-Setup sein eigen nennen, welches einem aus der Hand frisst. Im Grunde muss man sich noch nicht einmal so gut in der Shell auskennen, sondern einfach nur die ausführliche Dokumentation im Uberspace.de Wiki lesen. Uberspace hat zu jedem Feature ausführliche, benutzerfreundliche Anleitungen inklusive Beispiele. Jeder Entwickler weiß, wie schwer es ist eine gute und lückenlose Dokumention zu schreiben. Die Jungs von Uberspace haben das so was von raus. Sollte doch mal eine Frage offen sein, schreibt man eine Email und bekommt meist innerhalb von 6-8 Stunden eine Antwort. Servicetechnisch sind die Jungs Spitze. Bestandteile mail: spamassassin [Uberspace.de Wiki] Regelwerk (basierend auf regulären Ausdrücken) untersucht Mail Inhalte und bewertet diese. Überschreitet eine Email einen bestimmten Schwellenwert an Punkten => Spam. Das ganze ist natürlich erweiterbar. mail: maildrop [Uberspace.de Wiki] Sortiermaschine. Man kann hier regeln schreiben was in welchen Ordner geschickt werden soll, ob es an Spamassassin weitergereicht werden soll, etc. mail: dspam [Uberspace.de Wiki] Wer SpamSieve kennt, es ist im Prinzip dasselbe: Ein lernfähiges Filtern mit der Unterteilung von Nachrichten in Spam und Ham. Wenn ich eine Regel ändern/hinzufügen will öffne ich die Datei auf meinem shared host (dem Uberspace Server) in Sublime Text oder in Prompt/Coda auf iOS. Für den Interessierten Tüftler anbei zwei Links zu wirklich guten Tutorials: Maildrop Revisited Was man mit maildrop alles anstellen kann… Jetzt aber MailMate Patricks Grundvoraussetzungen an einen Emailclient sind, dass es keine reine Client-side Lösung sein darf. Das heißt, wenn ein wichtiges Kernfeature welches alles rund laufen lässt nur auf dem Mac funktioniert, so kommt die jeweilige App oder der Workflow für mich nicht in Frage. Dank der serverseitgen Regeln ist es ihm nun “eigentlich” egal welchen Client er verwendet. Auf iOS sollten Wischgesten für Spam und das Archiv unterstützt sein und auf OS X erlaubt er sich peu à peu MailMate besser kennen zu lernen. News: Thanks to listener Linda Hopkins, we learn from Amazon that Kindle samples are NOT designed to timeout.Tech Tip: How to put [20,000] 2,000 classics on your Kindle using MobileReference (thanks to Nick for suggesting this one) - 1.    Connect your Kindle to your computer with USB cable.2.    In your computer's web browser, go to MobileReference3.    In the main area of the web site, not the column on the left, scroll down to the section titled “Fiction Books.” 4.    In the last subcategory of that section, titled “Collection:”, click on “Classic Books Collection. Over 2,000 complete works. Only $19.99.”5.    For use on the Kindle, it doesn't seem to matter which platform you choose; I've just tested the “Desktop/Notebook/Tablet PC” platform, and that worked fine.  So in the row for “Desktop/Notebook/Tablet PC” platform, go over one column to the “Trial Version” column and click “Download Now.”6.    You will be asked to enter your email address, so do that and then click on the green “Download Application” button.7.    On the next screen, click on the live link which says “Click here to download: Best-Selling Classic Books Collection. Over 2000 complete works. FREE biographies and works in trial”8.    From here, what you see will depend on whether you are using a PC or Mac, but the essentials are the same as with any other download from the Internet that you do on your computer.  For the Mac, I see a dialog box saying, “You have chosen to open classicstrial103.zip” which is a zipped file containing numerous separate items.  I click on “OK” to open it with Stuffit Expander.  However your computer works, your goal is to be able to find a folder on your hard drive titled “ClassicsTrial”.  Mine shows up in a Downloads folder.9.    Open a window that shows you the “ClassicsTrial” folder you just downloaded, and then open that folder so you can see all the items in it, beginning with “AlexandreDumasDEMO.prc” and ending with “WilliamShakespeareDEMO.prc.”10.    Open another window that shows the Kindle icon, which you should see because your Kindle is attached to the computer by the USB cable.11.    Doubleclick the Kindle icon, so you can see five folders, including the one labeled “Documents.” 12.    Drag the “ClassicsTrial” folder into the “Documents” folder of your Kindle.   I just tried this on my MacBook Air, and it worked fine – I assume the same process will work on a PC, but if you run into trouble you might try selecting all the individual books in the “ClassicsTrial” folder and dragging them in one big bunch into the “Documents” folder. 13.    Once you have the “ClassicsTrial” contents in the Documents folder of your Kindle, safely eject the Kindle icon and then unplug the USB cable.14.    Checking on your Home screen, you'll now see about three added pages of demo versions of classic books.  15.    I'm pretty sure that once you sample some of the demo books, you'll want to spend the $19.99 to purchase the actual collection.  I'm going to do that now but make sure they go to my SD card, to keep my main Kindle.16.    The purchase process via Handango is routine, and you don't have to wait for a registration code.  The folder is called “ClassicsFull” . It's about 115 megabytes in size, so even with my speedy Comcast connection (31 megabits per second when I was doing the download last weekend) – it took a while for it all to load to my computer, and then another few minutes for it to load from the computer to the Kindle.17.    I've got a 1 GigaByte SD card in my Kindle.
