SpaceX's decision to bar Chinese mainland and Hong Kong investors from its $75 billion IPO underscores a growing global trend of technology decoupling, which Chinese companies must heed without altering their global outreach, said experts on Tuesday. Underwriters for SpaceX, the space exploration company founded by Elon Musk, said on Friday that they are instructed to reject any orders originating from the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong, according to people familiar with the matter. It means that mutual funds, private equities, sovereign funds, family offices and high-net-worth individuals from the two jurisdictions will all be blocked from this highly anticipated IPO, which would rank among the world's largest technology listings in history. Online access to the official website of SpaceX and its roadshow materials were inaccessible in the jurisdictions on Tuesday. SpaceX has cited the US International Traffic in Arms Regulations for making the decision, indicating national security concerns. But Dai Guanchun, a senior capital markets lawyer based in Beijing, said that there is no explicit restriction under US law. The subscription of shares does not pose any serious national security or technology leakage risks, he stressed. This reflects an excessive politicization of technological exchanges by the United States, disrupting the normal flow of international capital," he said. Chinese companies possess world-class innovation capabilities, and Chinese scientists play critical roles in nearly all areas of technological innovation. Excluding Chinese companies and Chinese capital is unjust, undermining long-standing international trust and collaboration," he added. But Dai stressed that this could be an unavoidable trend. Not just the US but probably Europe as well may impose excessive politicization on technology and capital exchanges. Against that backdrop, Chinese companies should not be conservative, but rather seek more cooperation in other markets, he added. Excluding investors from the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong from this IPO is using military export controls as a pretext. It is a selective capital isolation driven by geopolitical competition, as explained by Liu Chunsheng, an associate professor of international economics at the Central University of Finance and Economics. It is a typical case of capital decoupling in cutting-edge technology sectors. The military export control regulations used to restrict only the flow of technical hardware, but now companies are using it to block all related capital. The US side is expanding national security concerns to the capital market in strategic sectors such as aerospace and semiconductors. Investment rights are being divided by nationality, creating a so-called 'layered' and partial decoupling," said Liu. In the short run, this could lead to higher fundraising costs and fewer opportunities regarding commercial operations for US companies like SpaceX, as they will receive less Asian capital. If sustained for a longer term, it could impair the global capital supply, constraining the R&D expansion of capital-heavy aerospace projects, he said. decoupling /ˌdiːˈkʌplɪŋ/脱钩,分离underwriter /ˈʌndəraɪtə(r)/承销商jurisdiction /ˌdʒuərɪsˈdɪkʃn/管辖区域,辖区roadshow /ˈrəʊdʃəʊ/路演pretext /ˈpriːtekst/ 借口,托词geopolitical /ˌdʒiːəʊpəˈlɪtɪkl/地缘政治的

Pensions & Investments reported that several pension funds called SpaceX governance reckless ahead of a potential IPO. The funds cited concentrated control, limited transparency, and questions about board independence and risk oversight. They warned of forced buying pressures if index and benchmark mandates require purchasing shares after a listing. SpaceX has used company-led secondary tenders, with media reporting valuations above $180 billion in 2024. Underwriters and counsel typically address such concerns with detailed prospectus disclosures and governance structures, including independent directors and potential voting right sunsets. Insurance Mandates and AI Regulation Shift MSPs from Tool Support to Proof and Liability Management

Business of Tech

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 22, 2026 12:53

The dominant structural shift discussed in the episode is the movement from tools-based differentiation to a market defined by proof and liability. This shift is driven by the rising demand for continuous, auditable control over data location, access, and change—requirements increasingly codified by policy mandates, insurance underwriting, and regional AI governance. As illustrated by France's shift away from Windows to Linux across government ministries, enforced through formal governmental policy, the conversation is moving beyond technology preferences to mandated operational boundaries and verifiable compliance. The episode cites findings from ESET's 2026 SMB Cyber Readiness Index, reporting that 86% of US SMBs and 78% of Canadian SMBs carry cyber insurance, with over half of US-insured SMBs required to implement explicit security controls by insurers. Underwriters increasingly demand evidence of controls like MFA, immutable backups, and EDR—not just attestations—at renewal, underwriting, and post-incident. Public sector mandates, such as France's comprehensive push for sovereignty encompassing OS, collaboration, cloud, and AI platforms, are producing enforceable requirements that cascade to commercial contracts and the MSP channel. Supporting developments include Gartner's forecast that by 2027, 35% of countries will be locked into region-specific AI platforms. This is reinforced by channel research from Channel Insider and a survey of 333 MSPs by AvePoint and Omnia, both pointing to governance—not AI tooling—as the leading blocker for MSPs adopting new technologies. Microsoft's move toward metered AI billing and the proliferation of shadow data (with more than 80% of sensitive data potentially sitting outside formal controls, according to Palo Alto Networks research) further highlight how operational complexity and fragmented governance elevate risk for service providers. For MSPs and IT leaders, these trends increase contractual and operational exposure. Failure to recognize that the market is purchasing assurance rather than tool support will leave providers absorbing liabilities related to insurance control failures and unmetered operational costs, often under fixed-fee models that do not account for new governance demands. Providers are advised to immediately review contract language for obligations tied to security controls, reconsider pricing and scope in governance delivery, and prepare for insurer-driven requirements such as third-party access to telemetry or continuous control attestations. The takeaway is that defensible, auditable evidence—not stack management—will define margins, accountability, and long-term client relationships. 00:00 Sovereignty Squeeze 04:22 Spawl Blindspot 07:02 Proof Pays 09:35 Why Do We Care?  Supported by:  ScalePad CometBackup

Why 90% of AI Pilots Stall (And How to Escape Pilot Purgatory)

The Insurtech Leadership Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 5, 2026 32:05

Episode Overview How many insurance organizations have launched an AI pilot, watched it work in the lab, and then watched it quietly disappear in production? Today we're dismantling the myth that AI adoption is a technology problem—and making the case that it's a workflow problem. Guest Jake Sloan, VP of Global Insurance at Appian, is an operator first. He has run large-scale insurance operations, owned a $150M P&L, and delivered transformations that only happen when you understand how work actually moves—handoffs, exceptions, controls, and accountability. At Appian, he leads the insurance vertical for a process automation and low-code platform focused on claims, underwriting, and operational process orchestration. Key Topics • Pilot Purgatory: Why 90% of AI Projects Stall — Pilots work in controlled environments. Then reality hits: no data pipeline, no workflow integration, no governance, no frontline buy-in. Organizational alignment—not technology—is the breaking point. • The Orchestration Layer — Appian's core thesis: build an orchestration layer first. It sits between your legacy monolith and the next chapter. Additive, keeps work flowing during transformation, and creates the foundation where AI and automation actually stick. • Email as Infrastructure — Underwriters spend 40%+ of their day in inboxes. The AI mailbox use case embeds AI into a workflow that extracts data, routes work, makes decisions, and triggers actions. Underwriters gain 2–3 hours a day back. • Claims Velocity: Days to Hours — One global insurer went from 24–72 hours (FNOL to assignment) to minutes. Digital intake feeds orchestrated workflows. AI triages, categorizes severity, flags fraud risk. The adjuster gets a complete, pre-organized package. • Alignment = Culture, Not Just Tech — Appian's workshops put business, IT, data, and operations in one room to design the ideal state and work backward. Underwriters don't get replaced—they become superhuman. Admin work gets stripped away. • The Talent Problem Is a Workflow Problem — Entry-level insurance work is repetitive email categorization. When AI handles the mundane, these jobs become analytical and attractive again. The organizations winning reskill existing teams and position domain expertise as more valuable. • The 90-Day Deployment Mindset — Pick one workflow. Build the orchestration layer. Plug in AI. Show ROI in 90 days. Then iterate. Key Quotes -"When you go to scale it, it's like, well, we don't have the data pipeline. We don't have the workflow. We don't have the governance. We don't have the buy-in from the frontline team. And so it just stalls." -"It's not about the AI itself. It's about the workflow that the AI sits inside." -"We're not here to replace underwriters. We're here to make them superhuman." -"Get started. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good. Start with a use case, build the orchestration layer, plug AI into it, show value in 90 days." Glenn Jessome, President & CEO of Silver Tiger Metals (TSX.V:SLVR) (OTCQX:SLVTF), joins me for a candid and nuanced conversation on why the Company elected to take the recent financing instead of a larger debt package; while also still leveraging the debt term sheets in place for the combined surface and underground development of the El Tigre Silver-Gold Project in Sonora, Mexico.   We start off reviewing the reality that negotiating a debt deal is much more complex, with more restrictions and debt covenants, than most people realize.   The company has narrowed the 3 debt term providers down to just 2 now, and are they are still pursuing debt for the larger overall needs.   Glenn unpacks the sequence of events and his thought process on why they opted to go with the financing instead, and outlines the decision making process for those investors that were surprised, confused, or that had submitted questions about this transaction.   On Feb. 18, 2026 Silver Tiger Metals announced it had closed its previously announced bought deal offering of common shares of the Company with a syndicate of underwriters. An aggregate of 49,146,400 Shares at a price of C$1.17 per Share for gross proceeds to the Company of C$57,501,288 were sold, which includes the exercise in full of the Underwriters' over-allotment option. The Company intends to use the proceeds of the Offering to fund exploration and development expenditures at the Company's El Tigre Project in Mexico, as well as for working capital and general corporate purposes.   We also dive into all the construction activities already underway on the ground at El Tigre, and what criteria are being decided on in the background by the board and management team to be able to announce the official construction decision in March.     If you have any follow up questions for Glenn regarding Silver Tiger Metals, then please email them into me at Shad@kereport.com.   In full disclosure, Shad is a shareholder of Silver Tiger Metals at the time of this recording, and may choose to buy or sell shares at any time.   Click here to follow the latest news from Silver Tiger Metals   For more market commentary & interview summaries, subscribe to our Substacks:   The KE Report: https://kereport.substack.com/ Shad's resource market commentary: https://excelsiorprosperity.substack.com/     Investment disclaimer: This content is for informational and educational purposes only and does not constitute investment advice, an offer, or a solicitation to buy or sell any security. They were worried, not because AI made mistakes but because it didn't. When Lisa Bechtold's (who led AI governance at Zurich Insurance, now at Nestlé) team started implementing AI, they faced the classic dilemma: Move fast or move right. Lisa said: “We don't see governance as slowing innovation – we see it as enabling trust at speed.” ERGO Group worked with CamCom, a startup from India that uses computer vision to detect car damage from photos or drones. The tech was brilliant. The challenge? Integrating it into a multinational insurer's process. They didn't just hand over the product, they sat side by side – engineers, adjusters, compliance officers, even lawyers – to make it work. It took nearly a year to get from pilot to production and the result wasn't just faster claims; it was a new relationship model. The startup learned how corporates think. The corporate learned how startups move. That's the real win. After all the talk about data, systems, ethics, and pilots, what really matters is how humans evolve. AI won't replace people, but people who know how to use AI will replace people who don't. That's not a threat, it's an invitation. AI is already changing what we expect from talent. Claims adjusters now need to interpret AI outputs. Underwriters must question models. Leaders must learn to manage digital teammates. BEST MOMENTS  ‘Intelligent tool don't remove human judgment; they reveal it in higher resolution.'  ‘In this AI era, trust is the new currency.'‘Every AI dream dies in the shadow of bad data.'‘The irony is that the more intelligent our systems become, the more human our leadership must be. Empathy, creativity, ethics aren't data points, they're our differentiators.' ABOUT THE HOST Sabine is a corporate strategist turned entrepreneur. Jane's journey started on Wall Street at JP Morgan, followed by leadership roles in strategy and innovation at Marsh and MetLife. She then became part of the founding team at Unqork, where she helped scale the no-code pioneer into a global enterprise before co-founding Sixfold. Now, Jane is helping insurers harness AI to understand risk faster, more accurately, and with greater transparency. We'll talk about how Sixfold is transforming underwriting from an art into a science, what “responsible AI” really means in insurance, and how Jane's leadership philosophy—rooted in precision, empathy, and mentorship—is shaping an exciting InsurTech.

Send us a textWhat if your hen house burned tonight—would your plan hold? We sit down with Brett Cohrs, CRM and Senior Vice President at Palomar Insurance, to unpack what's really changing in poultry insurance and how leaders can turn risk management into a competitive edge. From rate softening for large layered property programs to tighter appetites for smaller growers, Brett explains why deductibles are climbing, which choices actually move premiums, and how to prepare your balance sheet for higher retention without jeopardizing growth. We get specific about fire risk in modern barns. Annual infrared scanning, true 100‑foot separation, and two‑hour fire doors in corridors and processing areas now sit at the center of underwriting scrutiny. Cage‑free has multiplied exposure: bigger single‑site values, more motors and controls, and dust acting as fine fuel. We talk through why control systems built to protect birds can unintentionally feed a blaze, and how purpose‑built barn technology can detect abnormal heat, trigger early response, and keep a local incident from becoming a total loss.Beyond property, Brett maps the risk terrain producers often overlook: product recall in decentralized models, employment practices liability as regulations shift, cyber exposures to connected controls, and the market shocks that turn a covered loss into a larger business interruption claim. He shares practical guidance for building a winning submission—accurate valuations, defensible BI calculations, documented maintenance, and clear contingencies for parts, graders, and egg sourcing—plus scenario exercises every manager should run before renewal. If you lead an egg or poultry operation, this conversation will help you decide where to invest first, which practices underwriters reward, and how to design a program that survives bad days and funds growth on good ones. I really enjoyed today's interview because is it packed full of eureka moments. Sometimes looking at a business from the outside it is hard to work out exactly what it does and how and why it does it. Visiting the website of a company of this sort tends to throw up more questions than it answers. And that's frustrating for a journalist as It's my job to make sense of these things For me cyber reinsurance underwriter Envelop Risk was one of those business – a bit of a black box that was hard to see into. I had known Jonathan Spry its CEO for about twenty years. Jonathan is very smart and has always operated at the high added value end of the Insurance value chain, where insurance and reinsurance blur into the capital markets, but in all that time I had never sat down and had a really long, researched conversation with him. And that's why this is such a satisfying interview. In the next forty-five minutes we dissect Envelop's augmented underwriting business model, looking at its Lloyd's and Bermuda platforms and its Machine-learning-powered approach to underwriting cyber risk. But this conversation goes way beyond and examines the future of underwriting itself in the global syndicated risk and capital markets, as well as outlining some of the new classes of business that will emerge in the coming decades. Envelop has an appetite way beyond Cyber and this is a really rewarding encounter with someone who understands our business in a more tech and capital savvy way than most of us. At the end of this conversation I felt like the person who has been allowed deep inside the black box and gets to see how it works and interrogate its way of thinking. Jonathan was on excellent form and was disarmingly open and accessible about Envelop's modus operandi. I feel enlightened for this experience and so will you NOTES:  GOFAI = Good Old-Fashioned AI LINKS: We thank our naming sponsor AdvantageGo: https://www.advantagego.com

Episode Info In this episode, I explore the paradox that is insurance. We buy risk from others, yet we are risk averse ourselves. Looking at the work of underwriters as compared to venture investors, you find that the skillset is actually nearly identical, but it's being deployed in opposite directions. I discuss that, why that might be, and what someone trying to bring innovation and change to insurance should keep in mind given this reality. Episode Highlights This episode is a unique and shorter installment with insights and reflections rather than our normal interview format. The focus is on exploring the concept of risk aversion within the insurance industry and comparing it to the venture capital world. Key Topics Discussed: Risk Aversion in Insurance:I see a paradox of risk aversion in an industry that essentially deals with buying and managing risk. Despite being in the business of risk, the insurance industry tends to be conservative and slow to change. Comparison with Venture Capital:A comparison is drawn between underwriters and venture capitalists, highlighting how both evaluate businesses but from different perspectives. While venture capitalists have a capped downside and potentially unlimited upside, underwriters face a capped upside and potentially unlimited downside. Analogies and Insights:I compare this to the Netflix show "Stranger Things" to describe the contrasting worlds of insurance and venture capital, likening them to the "Upside Down" and the real world. Economic Perspectives:Discussion on the economic frameworks within which underwriters and venture capitalists operate, emphasizing the differences in risk and reward dynamics. Personal Reflections:The episode includes personal anecdotes and reflections on the nature of risk, decision-making, and the psychological aspects of dealing with uncertainty. Conclusion: The episode concludes with a call to embrace conversations about risk and change, encouraging listeners to prepare for and adapt to new challenges in their professional environments. In the summer of 1798, in the town of Enniscorthy, a spark was lit that echoed across the centuries. Inspired by the ideals of liberty and self - determination that fueled the American and French Revolutions, ordinary Irish men and women rose up against British rule—hoping to shape a freer, more equal Ireland. The United Irishmen, a movement of Protestants and Catholics alike, dreamed of unity. But their rebellion was met with brutal force. The most haunting chapter came to a head on Vinegar Hill, where rebels made their last stand. Though the 1798 Rebellion was crushed, the spirit behind it lived on. It became a quiet current beneath Irish history, resurfacing again in 1916 during the Easter Rising—and carrying through to modern Ireland. Today's episode features songs and tunes inspired by the 1798 rebellion. These are songs of hope, defiance, heartbreak, and memory. This episode is not about blame.
