More and more people across the world are struggling with burnout. According to a Future Forum survey of over 10,000 workers from February 2023, as many as 42% of workers experience it, an all-time high. When signs of exhaustion emerge, the ideal solution is, of course, total rest, but it's often a luxury that few can afford. An alternative for preventing burnout is what's known as the "42% rule." The rule was introduced in 2019 in a book authored by two identical twins from the USA: Amelia and Emily Nagoski. The book was entitled "Burnout: The secret to solving the stress cycle" and it was based on the sisters' personal experiences.  How does it work? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Work-Life Balance Is a Myth? This CEO Explains Why

Work-Life Balance Is a Myth? This CEO Explains Why Aslak de Silva introduces his “Tetris-ing your life together” concept, challenging the traditional notion of #worklife balance. Rather than striving for perfect daily equilibrium, he emphasizes actively managing one's calendar to strategically block out time for different life priorities—family, friends, work, training, and personal development. This approach to what is having a work-life balance moves beyond mythical perfection, acknowledging that not everything can happen simultaneously but can be thoughtfully arranged to fit together over time. The goal is achieving fulfillment by ensuring all valued aspects of life receive attention through flexible, adaptive planning as life evolves. The Power of Presence in Leadership and Life The discussion shifts to being more present in the moment, drawing from Aslak de Silva's martial arts background. What does it mean to be more present means fully engaging in the current moment, whether being a more present parent or in professional interactions. Aslak de Silva shares anecdotes—his daughter learning to ride a bike and his wife's text on a train—illustrating how being present and mindful strengthens connections and significantly impacts others' feelings. In leadership, being present in a relationship with team members allows genuine support, encouragement, and obstacle removal, creating a strong sense of care. Being present meditation and martial arts training demonstrate that this mindful engagement is a developable skill requiring consistent practice. Cultivating Daily Discipline and Self-Leadership Tim Staton and Aslak de Silva explore developing discipline and habits, especially for those without military or martial arts backgrounds. Discipline and good habits are framed not as innate traits but as muscles strengthened through small, consistent actions. Aslak de Silva suggests starting with achievable daily practices—a healthy breakfast or short exercise—and gradually building upon them. The core principle is that “discipline beats motivation,” meaning consistent action, even when unmotivated, yields greater results than waiting for inspiration. This internal journey of self-leadership, managing one's well-being and habits, directly influences leadership effectiveness and supports #being more present and #being mindful and present in all aspects of life. The Evolution of Black Belt Leadership Aslak de Silva explains the genesis of his book, “Black Belt Leadership,” synthesizing his 15-20 years in martial arts with his CEO career. He recognized that the developmental journey in martial arts, marked by different colored belts, paralleled the continuous growth required in leadership, prompting him to document his learnings. The book explores how martial arts principles—resilience, focus, and continuous improvement—apply to leadership. Aslak de Silva also shares how artificial intelligence (AI) assisted him in structuring scattered ideas, maintaining consistent tone, and organizing content into 20 actionable lessons, making the writing process more efficient. Embracing Imperfection and Developing Leadership Instincts A key takeaway from both martial arts and leadership is accepting imperfection. Aslak de Silva emphasizes that even the best fighters make mistakes, and leaders will inevitably face challenges and failures. The goal is not perfection but continuous calibration, learning from both successes and missteps. This requires boldness to try new approaches and self-awareness to understand one's strengths and weaknesses. Aslak de Silva highlights that knowing one's weaknesses allows for building a complementary team, ensuring all project aspects are handled effectively. The conversation concludes by touching upon leadership instincts and the idea that some people might fear success due to potential sacrifices involved, underscoring the importance of commitment and effort from day one to achieve one's full potential.   Connect with Tim: Website: timstatingtheobvious.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/timstatingtheobvious YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHfDcITKUdniO8R3RP0lvdw Instagram: @TimStating TikTok: @timstatingtheobvious LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tim-staton-04b41a271/ SKOOL Community: https://www.skool.com/timstatingtheobvious-9537/about?ref=de9c7e65d8ba4eeabc1a8eea413c125b Enroll in the Leadership Course: https://themanyhatsofleadership.learnworlds.com/course/the-edge-mindset   Connect with Aslak de Silva LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/aslakdesilva/ Book: https://www.amazon.com/Black-Belt-Leadership-Lessons-Boardroom/dp/952880490X

What if building a business that supports your life actually isn't about hustle…but about resilience, systems, and intention? In this episode of The Aspiring Solopreneur, Carly and Joe sit down with Mike Lynch, creator, RV-lifer, automation strategist, and founder of Flywheel Factory, for a refreshingly honest conversation about what solopreneurship really looks like behind the scenes.Mike shares the truth most people won't say out loud: it's harder than you think, it takes longer than you expect, and the path rarely looks the way you planned. But it's also where creativity, freedom, and momentum can finally meet. You'll hear how Mike and his family design RV travel around work (not the other way around), how he uses AI and automation to protect his creative energy instead of replacing it, and why building a “flywheel mindset” matters more than just staying busy. This is a grounded, practical, and motivating episode for solopreneurs who want to build smarter systems, reclaim their time, and design a business that truly supports their life.Episode FAQsHow can solopreneurs use AI and automation without losing their personal voice?Solopreneurs can use tools like Custom GPTs, content workflows, and automation platforms (like Make or Zapier) to streamline their work while still sounding like themselves. The key is starting with your own ideas and experiences first, then using AI to refine, organize, and scale your content, not replace your thinking. What's the best way for overwhelmed solopreneurs to get started with automation? The best place to start is identifying one repetitive, frustrating task in your business and breaking it into smaller steps. From there, tools like Custom GPTs or simple automations can help eliminate bottlenecks. How can solopreneurs design a business that supports their lifestyle instead of causing burnout? It starts with defining non-negotiables (family time, flexibility, travel, health) and then building systems around those priorities.

If you've ever felt torn between being fully present and fully committed, this episode is for you. When you're building something meaningful, the idea of work life balance sounds nice, but it rarely reflects reality. The business doesn't shut off. The responsibilities don't pause. And trying to perfectly separate the two often creates more tension than peace. In this episode, we talk about why integration matters more than balance. Why entrepreneurs don't need a clean line between work and life, but a better way to weave the people they care about into the journey. We share how communication, expectations, and alignment have played a bigger role than any schedule or system ever could. We get honest about what it looks like to build while people are depending on you. How resentment builds when the vision isn't shared. Why different seasons demand different levels of focus. And how being present isn't about doing less, but about being intentional with what you're doing and why. This conversation is for anyone trying to grow without losing themselves or the people they're building for. Your brain is not broken and your mind is not a mess. You're not failing as a mom. You're not falling behind as an executive. We need to restore your hormones. I'm Dr. Betty Murray, and in this powerful episode, I sit down with Dr. Romie Mushtaq, neurologist, Chief Wellness Officer for a company of 14,000 people, and bestselling author of The Busy Brain Cure, to expose the workplace crisis that's destroying women's careers and health. Dr. Romie shares her own story of burnout: 120-hour work weeks as one of less than 5% of female brain doctors in academic medicine, researching women's hormones while her own brain cells felt "on fire," chest pain dismissed as "just stress," and life-saving surgery in 2010 that woke her up to what medical school never taught her. But this conversation goes far deeper than one woman's story. We unpack the shocking data showing women in their 40s, 50s, and 60s are being forced out of the workforce at a rate 15 times higher than men, not because they're failing, but because their perimenopause and menopause symptoms are being dismissed, misdiagnosed, and weaponized against them. You'll Discover: ●     Why women ages 40-60 are being laid off or taking involuntary leave at rates 15 times higher than men ●     Dr. Romie's burnout journey in academic medicine ●     The "hormones are a symphony" framework ●     Why 70-80% of women with mental health symptoms due to stress actually have thyroid as the root cause, with difficulty focusing being the only presenting symptom (mistaken for ADHD or anxiety), while weight fluctuations, dry skin, and irregular cycles come later ●     The truth about perimenopause symptoms ●     Why "authentic leadership" is BS in corporate America ●     The functional medicine gatekeeping crisis: complex gut health diet protocols for busy traveling executives who spend $3,000-$10,000 without getting help, told to "earn your hormones," when brain fog/anxiety sufferers need low-hanging fruit first (progesterone, thyroid) to feel better THEN add lifestyle changes ●     Why no supplement will replace thyroid hormone: if a doctor is selling you supplements instead of prescription medication, run. ●     Stress eating vs comfort food distinction ●     Business dinner survival tactics PLUS, Dr. Romie's "glow up" secret: lost weight, skin glowing, looks younger than 50, wasn't Botox (though she covers gray hair every 3 weeks), was thyroid, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone restoration, started thyroid at 38-39 years old and had regular menstrual cycle for first time in her life This episode is for women in their 40s-60s experiencing brain fog at work, executives who can't focus in meetings, anyone told their symptoms are "just stress," or women considering quitting their jobs because they think they're failing. Watch now and discover why you don't need to quit, you need your hormones restored.   Connect with Dr. Romie Mushtaq Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drromie/ The Busy Brain Cure by Dr. Romie Mushtaq (bestselling book with 8-week protocol) https://drromie.com/book/   Connect with Dr. Betty Murray: Betty Murray Website: https://www.bettymurray.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drbettymurray/ Links: ●     The Fierce Female Method for Longevity (Dr. Betty's book): https://fierce.hormoneshelp.com/ ●     Menrva Telemedicine: https://gethormonesnow.com/ ●     FREE Hormone Quiz: https://bit.ly/3wNJOec ●     Living Well Dallas: https://www.livingwelldallas.com/ ●     Hormone Reset: https://hormonereset.net/ More from the Podcast: Subscribe to #MenopauseMastery → https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwONPdSvb2-YYY74VhD-XBw Apple Podcasts → https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/menopause-mastery/id1607369247 Spotify → https://open.spotify.com/show/0tNsjm32CZNXSgSFEwS3uH Thank you for listening to Menopause Mastery. What actually happens when generosity, influence, and habits collide in your business development work? That's the question I dive into in this second conversation with my friend Todd Sattersten, publisher of Bard Press and author of The 100 Best Books for Work & Life. We pick up exactly where Part One left off, right at the intersection of relationships, vulnerability, and connecting with others in a way that actually moves your work forward. From the surprising science behind why "givers" rise to the top (and sometimes sink to the bottom), to the behind-the-scenes mechanics of hospitality and how we make people feel in every interaction, this episode pushes far past surface-level tactics. In this conversation, I explore the nuance in generosity, the structures behind positive influence, and six books that can fundamentally reshape how you implement, focus, and stay consistent. We dig into the practical edges of reciprocity, the real reason some professionals burn out while others thrive, and why habits ultimately drive identity and long-term success. If you've ever wondered why some people seem to glide forward with clarity while others stall out, this episode reveals the less obvious patterns hiding underneath.   Topics We Cover in This Episode:  The subtle mistake that drains value from your "help" without you realizing it How hospitality reshapes the way clients experience your work The six psychological levers that quietly shape every business interaction A habit-building framework that works even when motivation doesn't How to create focus in a world that constantly tries to distract you The identity-level shift that fuels long-term growth The surprising reason goals alone can actually limit your success If you want to deepen your relationships, sharpen your focus, and build the habits that fuel long-term success, this is an episode you'll want to sit with, not just listen to once.   Resources Mentioned: Order your copy of Give to Grow Get the Supplemental materials for Give to Grow Get a copy of your GrowBIG Playbook today! https://teachhoops.com/ The "three-legged stool" of a high school coach's life—career, coaching, and family—is notoriously wobbly. In this episode, we address the silent struggle that drives many great coaches out of the profession: the overwhelming guilt of trying to be everything to everyone. We discuss the reality of the "invisible hours"—the film study at the dinner table, the mental absence even when you are physically present, and the strain that a four-month season places on spouses and children. We move beyond the cliché of "balance"—which often implies everything is equal—and focus instead on "work-life integration" and setting boundaries. We share practical strategies for protecting your family time, such as establishing "no-phone zones," scheduling date nights with the same rigidity as practice times, and finding creative ways to involve your children in the program so they don't view the team as their competition for your love. We also discuss the vital importance of having a transparent, pre-season conversation with your spouse to manage expectations before the chaos begins. Finally, we look at the long-term perspective. We argue that you cannot be an effective leader for your players if your home life is falling apart. We explore the concept of quality over quantity and why "leaving work at the gym" is the single best thing you can do for your mental health. This episode is a survival guide for keeping your marriage healthy and your relationship with your kids strong, all while chasing a championship. Welcome back to Truth, Lies & Work. Today we're doing something a little different for the Christmas break. We're sharing an episode from our friend Jeremy Cline's podcast Change Work Life, where Al joined him to reflect on Jeremy's first year as a full-time coach. This conversation marks Jeremy's 200th episode, and instead of interviewing someone else, he turns the spotlight on himself. It's a rare, honest look at what actually happens when you leave a stable career after 20 years and try to build something new from scratch. No glossy “quit and make six figures” narrative — just the real, messy middle that most founders and coaches quietly go through. Al and Jeremy dig into the emotional, financial and identity shifts that come with starting your own business, what surprised Jeremy the most, and why meaningful conversations — not logos or websites — became the backbone of his first year. If you're thinking of going out on your own, supporting someone who is, or you're simply curious about what a year of reinvention looks like behind the scenes, this is the perfect listen for the quieter days of December.

We're sold the idea that balance means doing everything perfectly at the same time being productive at work, fully present at home, on top of the holidays, and magically finding space to grow a business or podcast without missing a beat. But that version of “balance” is the very thing keeping so many entrepreneurs and podcasters stuck in guilt, overwhelm, and the constant feeling of never being enough. In this episode, Olivia breaks down the lie behind traditional work–life balance and reveals why your real power comes from presence, intentionality, and the courage to release perfection. Through honest stories and the hard lessons learned while building her business, she shares how she went from 12-hour days to a seasonally adaptive, strategy-first approach without sacrificing results. If you've ever said “I don't have time,” waited for the perfect moment to start, or felt torn between your priorities, this conversation will shift how you see productivity, balance, and growth. Olivia unpacks why clarity matters more than control, why perfectionism stalls progress, and how redefining balance allows you to launch, build, and sustain your podcast or business with far less pressure and far more impact. You'll walk away with a new understanding of what balance actually looks like not equal time, but intentional time and the presence to show up where it matters most.Want to start your own podcast, grow your show, or get featured as a guest? Let's map it out together. Together, we explore why purpose matters more than you think, why progress—not perfection—is what keeps us motivated, and how the strongest relationships (both personal and professional) can radically improve your success. We also break down lessons from books on goals, growth, habits, vulnerability, and the surprising science behind becoming your best self. This conversation skims across decades of research, the best thinkers in the world, and hundreds of lessons that can transform your trajectory. If you've ever wondered what to prioritize, where to focus, or how to build a career and life you actually love, you'll hear ideas you can implement today—along with the stories, examples, and science that make them stick. Topics We Cover in This Episode:    The surprising way Todd chose the "100 best" books—and why categories came after the insights The core belief every high performer needs before any real growth can happen A mindset shift from one of the world's most famous researchers that proves anyone can improve The daily and weekly habits scientifically shown to increase happiness, productivity, and clarity Why three layers of your social network influence you far more than you realize The uncomfortable—but essential—truth Brene Brown uncovered about connection and professional success A story of how following intuitive energy (instead of logic) can redirect an entire career The one type of progress that dramatically increases motivation—and how to track it in under 15 minutes   If this episode sparks something in you—an idea, a curiosity, or even the sense that it's time for a shift—I'd love for you to dive into Part 2 where we continue the conversation with generosity, influence, habits, and implementation. And if Todd's insights resonated, check out The 100 Best Books for Work & Life and start building your own roadmap for growth.
