Ultimately, Crockett's frontier persona would prove his greatest political asset, eventually carrying him all the way to Congress.     On May 9, 1873, as the Vienna Stock Exchange collapsed and thousands of speculators were wiped out in a single afternoon, young Salbert von Rothschild and two colleagues from the Schey and Goldschmidt banking families were nearly lynched on the floor of the exchange by infuriated stockjobbers and had to be rescued by police. That same evening, oblivious to the carnage a few hundred yards away, the Prince of Wales hosted a gala dinner at the Ministry of Finance, and the following night Emperor Franz Joseph served a state dinner for the assembled heirs to the royal thrones of Europe. Within months, the panic had crossed the Atlantic and destroyed Jay Cooke, the man who had single-handedly funded the Union's Civil War effort, shutting down the New York Stock Exchange for ten days. Today's guest is Liaquat Ahamed, author of 1873: The Rothschilds, the First Great Depression, and the Making of the Modern World. We discuss how the Rothschilds built their fortune smuggling gold across the English Channel during the Napoleonic Wars and became, relative to the size of the global economy, the richest family in history.     “Understand, therefore, that the Lord your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for a thousand generations and lavishes his unfailing love on those who love him and obey his commands. But he does not hesitate to punish and destroy those who reject him. Therefore, you must obey all these commands, decrees, and regulations I am giving you today.” (Deuteronomy 7:9–11 NLT) Our founding fathers framed a document that Thomas Jefferson drafted for the Second Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia. Congress adopted the document on July 4, 1776. We call it the Declaration of Independence. Among other things it says, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Pastor Chuck Smith once said that sometimes we forget that the Declaration of Independence, which declared independence from foreign tyranny, also declared our dependence on an eternal God. We see this in its closing words: “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.” Our forefathers believed that there is a God who guides the affairs of humankind. And they founded our nation on the teachings of the Bible. Thomas Jefferson, our third president, said, “The Bible is the cornerstone of liberty.” Andrew Jackson, our seventh president, called the Bible “the Rock upon which our republic rests.” And Abraham Lincoln, our 16th president, said of the Bible, “All the good the Saviour gave to the world was communicated through this book. But for it we could not know right from wrong. All things most desirable for man’s welfare, here and hereafter, are to be found portrayed in it.” Two hundred and fifty years after the founding of our nation, our need for God’s Word has never been greater. Deuteronomy 7:9–11 says, “Understand, therefore, that the Lord your God is indeed God.     Leon Black's congressional testimony encapsulated the broader Epstein scandal because it combined immense wealth, legal maneuvering, institutional deference, and carefully controlled cooperation. Despite paying Epstein at least $158 million for tax and estate-planning services and continuing their relationship after Epstein's 2008 conviction, Black was initially allowed to appear voluntarily rather than under subpoena. When questioning moved toward women, nondisclosure agreements, and other sensitive matters, he refused to answer and left the interview, forcing the committee to issue a subpoena afterward. That sequence reflected the same pattern that has defined the Epstein case for decades: authorities begin by treating powerful people cautiously, those people exploit that caution, and meaningful pressure is applied only after delay and public embarrassment.The fiasco also demonstrated why every significant witness in the Epstein investigation should be compelled to testify, produce relevant documents, and face serious consequences for lying or obstructing the inquiry. Congress should not permit wealthy associates to decide which subjects are private, irrelevant, or off-limits, particularly when financial arrangements, confidential agreements, and post-conviction relationships may help explain how Epstein maintained his influence. Black's return under subpoena gives the committee another opportunity to demand direct answers and test his claims against records, payments, communications, and other testimony.
