#111 Can Nicotine Improve Health? Surprising Science with Dr. Bryan Ardis

Know Better | Do Better

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 23, 2025 49:28

The one and only Dr. Bryan Ardis is here—and today, we're challenging one of the most controversial narratives in health: nicotine.  No, this isn't about lighting up a cigarette or vaping with fruity flavors. We're talking about nicotine as a nutrient—its natural presence in foods like tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants, and its surprising potential to boost immune function, sharpen cognition, and even help prevent chronic disease. From Parkinson's to insulin resistance and autoimmunity, Dr. Ardis explains how small, intentional doses of nicotine may support healing—and why pharmaceutical interests have kept this truth buried. But we don't stop there. Towards the end, we go even deeper, unpacking the use of venoms in medicine, what viruses really are, and what you need to know about the future of pharmaceuticals and genetic manipulation. In this episode, you'll learn: • Why nicotine is naturally found in plants—not just tobacco • How dietary nicotine may support brain health, inflammation, and the immune system • The truth about nicotine addiction, safe dosage, and FDA narratives  • How venoms are used in food, cosmetics, and medicine • The deeper connection between toxins, modern medicine, and genetic engineering This conversation is bold, evidence-packed, and guaranteed to make you think differently. If this episode challenged what you've been told—follow, subscribe, and leave a review.

This key-rrific episode of Join The Docs features the ever-curious Professor Jonathan Sackier flying solo, sitting down without his usual sidekick Doctor Nigel Guest who is taking his own medicine and having a holiday.. This time, he's joined by the legendary John Oates. Yes, you heard it right—John Oates, the moustached marvel from the iconic duo Hall & Oates. Not only is he in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but he's also a multi-talented musician, songwriter, and all-around cool guy. They sit down to talk all things music and medicine, with a hint of laughter. What sparks the conversation? Oates, dives straight into the nitty-gritty of his sixth solo album,  “Reunion." This isn't just any album. Inspired by a whirlwind of personal life events, "Reunion" is a rollercoaster of emotions, melodies, and collaborations with some of the music industry's finest. Oates regales us with tales of  jam sessions, spontaneous songwriting when the radar is alerted by life events - check out the story of a girl in cowboy boots and a pink tutu!At the heart of the episode, the emotional story behind the album's title track. Oates opens up about his ageing father, painting a vivid picture of a man who has seen it all and then some. The song is a poignant reflection on life's horizons, filled with realisations that hit harder than a double espresso on a Monday morning. Oates' storytelling is so vivid, you can almost see the twinkle in his father's eye and feel the weight of the years gone by.What's Oates' secret to maintaining his vocal health? John shares his secret weapons, gargling, humidity, yoga and not talking to our resident Professor!. And let's not forget the physical challenges he's faced—two rotator cuff surgeries, folks! Oates recounts the gruelling physical therapy sessions with a humour that makes you almost wish you were there, cheering him on from the sidelines. Hip Hop, Hooray!Wait a minuet!  Why is the healing power of music so important to Oates? To rap it up, Oates passionately discusses how strumming a guitar or belting out a tune can mend a broken spirit faster than any doctor-prescribed remedy. Oates means treble, emphasising the importance of physical therapy post-surgery, sharing anecdotes of his therapist who, according to Oates, has the hands of an angel and the motivational skills of a drill sergeant. He also tells us of the people he has  worked with, a veritable who's who of the music business. And talking of Who, his recent duet with Roger Daltrey was to help those living with teen cancer.—--DISCLAIMER: The views and opinions expressed on Join the Docs are those of Dr. Nigel Guest, Jonathan Sackier and other people on our show. Support today comes from Soul House Love, Charlottesville's Guide to Alternative Wellness. This Friday, Soul House Love is taking reservations for a New Moon Ceremony in a gorgeous outdoor location, with powerful guided meditations to cleanse your energy. Visit soulhouselove.com for more information and to reserve your spot.*There are more positive cases reported from the Fluvanna Women’s Correctional Facility today and the first cluster of cases has been reported at the University of Virginia. Of the 84 new cases reported in the Thomas Jefferson Health District today, 48 of those in Fluvanna County. Yesterday there were 41 new cases in Fluvanna. Testing has been conducted at the women’s prison this week, including all inmates and staff.  “The facility will conduct internal contact tracing for the women in the facility,” said Kathryn Goodman, spokeswoman for the TJHD. “Once the contact tracing on the inmates are completed, they share the information with TJHD. It would be a challenge for us to speak with the inmates so this is the best practice for these types of facilities. TJHD will conduct the contact tracing on staff as we do with any other cases.”There has been another COVID-19 death in Albemarle, for a total of 20 in the county and 63 in the district. There were 26 cases reported in Charlottesville. The Cavalier Daily reports there is an outbreak at a University of Virginia residence hall with testing revealing that five students tested positive. The 188 students in the Balz-Dobie dormitory have been told to quarantine while waiting for the results of tests that were conducted last night. It is unclear whether these cases are captured in the COVID-19 tracker, which was updated yesterday to add another five cases for a total of 378 total positive cases since August 17. The outbreak was also detected through monitoring of wastewater.  The Virginia Department of Health is reporting another 1,101 cases of COVID-19 today, and another 36 deaths. The higher-than-usual death rate stems from a data backlog according to officials. The statewide seven-day average for positive tests is at 6.7 percent today, down from 6.9 percent yesterday.   Before the news was announced, the Albemarle Supervisors were briefed by officials from the TJHD, including Ryan McKay. (download the presentation) “We’re certainly seeing increased number of cases among students,” McKay said. “We’re beginning to see some cases that are occurring on Grounds. Working with UVA, we meet with them on a daily basis to make sure we are communicating regularly, with transparency between what we’re seeing in terms of numbers, what they’re seeing, and then how we’re trying to support students.” McKay told Albemarle Supervisors that the area is moving towards more community transmission in urban areas. “And I think this is largely attributable to case counts that have been seen and positivity rates certainly in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County,” McKay said. “We are seeing increased numbers here in Charlottesville.”*The Virginia Senate has passed legislation requiring most utilities to develop debt repayment plans for those who have not been able to pay for electric, gas, or water service. The legislation sponsored by Senator Jennifer McClellan (D-9) was approved 24 to 12 with one abstention. (bill)*The Virginia Department of Historic Resources today will meet to consider nominations for two area properties to be listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. One is Jackson P. Burley High School on Rose Hill Drive.“Opened in 1951 as a joint high school for African-American students in both Charlottesville and Albemarle County, Burley graduated its last high school class in 1967,” reads the Burley nomination. “Burley is great, and that it continues to function as a school is I think fantastic and I can say as a coach in the city schools and at Charlottesville High School, I wish the student athletes would go over there and walk the halls at Burley and see the accomplishments of back in the fifties and early sixties,” said Jeff Werner, the city’s historic preservation planner. “It’s just an extraordinary place.”The other is River View Farm, which is now known as the Carr-Greer House at the Ivy Creek Natural Area. “River View Farm was established by Hugh Carr, born enslaved, with an initial down payment on land in 1870 near the confluence of Ivy Creek and the Rivanna River,” reads that nomination. “By the time of his death in 1914, Carr had amassed a farm totaling 108 acres, and was among the largest African American landowners in Albemarle County.” The State Review Board meets at 1 p.m. (agenda)*The Jefferson Madison Regional Library has announced it will reopen some library branches for limited hours by appointment, and that curbside service hours will be extended at the others. The in-person hours wil bel offered at rural branches in outlying counties. “JMRL has worked hard to be able to re-open some doors, and is looking forward to the opportunity to serve the people of Greene, Louisa, and Nelson inside library buildings again,” said JMRL director David Plunkett in a statement. “The Library knows that the people in these communities need access to the resources in their local libraries, and are glad to be able to offer these again on a limited and safe basis.” Beginning Monday, the limited in-person appointment services can be used for up to 45 minutes by five individuals at a time. This is a move to tier 3 service, down from tier 4. Additional curbside service will come to Northside and Crozet libraries beginning on September 28. Call for more information. Tanya Howell joins us today to educate us on the difference between CBD oil and Copaiba--both of which interact with the endocannabinoid system and could help with anxiety, insomnia, pain, and more. Listen in as we discuss: What's the difference between CBD oil and Copaiba oil? Both interact with the endocannabinoid system Cannabinoid recepters are found in the brain, organs, and tissues There are 2 types of cannabinoid recepters: CB1 and CB2 For CB2 specifically, research shows that substances that target the CB2 receptor of the endocannabinoid system may help with anxiety and depression. Cannabinoids include: Cannabidiol (CBD), THC, Beta-carlophylyne (BCP) BCP acts as a cannabinoid, and can interact with the CB2 receptors BCP is predominately found in Copaiba oil BCP is found in very high amounts in Copaiba - up to 60% CBD and THC only contain 5-35% of BCP CBD oil indirectly interacts with CB2 recepters Copaiba directly interacts with CB2 recepters Copaiba does not contain any trace amounts of THC, whereas CBD sometimes can (meaning you run the risk of failing a drug test) Copaiba helps with the nervous system, the brain, has a soothing effect on areas where you are experiencing inflammation, pain, or the skin. How to administer Copaiba including topically, internally, sublingually Ensure you get Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade from a reputable company that undergoes rigorous testing (Tanya recommends doTERRA) If you want to learn more about Copaiba or essential oils, reach out to Tanya on instagram at @heart.driven.healthmaker. He has been exploring it and practicing within it for most of his life. His private practice Wellness & Awakening is the fruition of this life's work. Wellness & Awakening at its core is not a Method, a Way nor a Technique. It is the setting and application of the highest moral and ethical standards in which a practitioner facilitates spiritual and alternative modalities of assistance to another’s Life and Wellness. From this Highest Standard comes an unparalleled level of service, facilitation, and effectiveness of my provided accommodations. His services and function are vast in their accommodations as he has taken these personalized journeys with countless Couples, Individuals, and Families. From guidance with a career change to personal loss and emotional trauma. From the beginning steps of spiritual awakening and self-realization to life’s deepest explorations and metaphysical awarenesses. After years of assisting others in any area and any stage of their life, Eddy attributes his ongoing success to a simple truth, that he has continued to uphold the vow of the authenticity and purity in which he facilitates his guidance of another and he has remained true to its deliverance in the most effective forms possible. TOP POINTS FROM THE EPISODE: “Personalized” Guidance of Life and Spiritual Wellness & Exploration. The purpose and significance of providing this personalized assistance to another through their own steps of their journey that are unique to only them opposed to the implementation of pre-existing methods, ways, systems, and techniques (external teachings). Advocating that our greatest answers and direction are already within us to see, not outside of us to find. 1. How we find our own “answers” and “life direction”. 2.  I sure love a good wellnessy cafe where I can order everything from avocado toast to chia pudding to a Reishi mushroom tea but what I love even more is a good story. Today's guests Jordan and Sam are long best friends and co-founders of Springbone a cafe I discovered just a couple weeks after moving to NYC and soon became a regular at. Springbone specializes in simple, natural food that blends taste and health with ease in every recipe. While I came in for the coconut milk soft-served I stayed because the founders Jordan and Sam were the nicest.  Being super new to the city, the two native New Yorkers flooded me with suggestions of places I'd like all over the city. We shared an interest in simple cooking that didn't sacrifice taste for health and I was curious on how they went from working in finance and real estate to starting their dream business . All my questions and more were answered on this week's episode. We had a tangental conversation as usual where we covered working with your best friend and tips on how to keep both the friendship and business strong as well as their advice for  being an entrepreneur in a field you aren’t an expert in. We discussed what health and wellness means to them, their thoughts on family, relationships, and spirituality. I loved talking to them and I'm so psyched to hang out with them more and hopefully you at our podcast meet-up at Springbone this week, RSVP here.  Notes from the Show:-Springbone's Website | Facebook  | Instagram-we're doing a pod listener meetup at Springbone on Nov. 30th, 2017 - join us!-also join me this Saturday (Dec. 2nd, 2017) for brunch at Divya’s Kitchen — I'm doing a LIVE podcast recording + get 20% off brunch and hang out with me after-my annual holiday gift guide is here-I pretty much love all the bowls, bone broths and ice creams at Springbone... but here are some of Sam and Jordan's personal favorite menu items: scrambled eggs, the rachL's Bowl (created by past pod guest racheL Mansfield), the Mexican Bowl & the Chili Bowl (seasonal)-they also sell amazing mushroom exlier drinks from Four Sigmatic (hear more about them in the episode with Tero)-aeropress for coffee-Podcasts: Tim Ferris, The Joe Rogan Experience, Ben Greenfield Fitness, The Model Health Show with Shawn Stevenson (also a past pod guest), How I Built This, 10% Happier with Dan Harris-Music: Sufjan Stevens-Movies: happythankyoumoreplease, The Godfather (part 1), The Diving Bell and The Butterfly, Forgetting Sarah Marshall-Books: Meditations by Marcus Aurelius & The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen-Audiobooks: Titan: The Life of John D. I stumbled across Minka Brooklyn soon after moving to New York. It was one of those very Brooklyn places I was very thrilled existed and couldn't wait to check out now that I lived in the city. Aki, the founder was kind, nurturing, and sweet right off the bat. She gave me a tour of the space and a full treatment of Reiki and flower essences, both of witch I had never experienced. I knew immediately I wanted to now more about Aki, her story and the genesis of her holistic healing wonderland, Minka.  We recorded this conversation a few weeks ago on a Sunday afternoon in her cozy office. We talked for hours on everything from holistic healing to her fascinating story of immigrating from Japan at 18, moving to New York, dealing with depression, motherhood, and entrepreneurship.  We get into so many topics including dabbling in lots of different things, healing tools for depression, wellness, connecting to your true purpose, tarot readings, activism, self-care, masculine/feminine energies, flower essences, reiki, and so much more. Her advice on relationships is some of the best I've heard and there are so many wise moments throughout this. I know you'll love her throughout this long meandering conversation.   Notes from the Show:-Aki Online | Facebook  | Twitter-find Aki's wellness space, Minka Brooklyn Online | Instagram | Facebook -the compound co-working space (the brother organization) masculine and feminine-DBT therapy (dialectical co-behavior therapy)-I mentioned going to Sqirl in L.A. — discovered this spot with Lynn Chen (past podcast guest)-Zodiac Lounge-Dropping Seeds herbal blends-Music: Jazzanova-Books: James Baldwin & Holistic Tarot-Podcast: On Being & Hidden Brain-Movies: Whale Rider & ElizabethCool Things to Check-Out:-LISTENER GIVEAWAY -- enter before November 15th, 2017 to win a package of some of my favorite things! I met Jamie last year through my best friend Simi who raved about her. We met when I was in town for my book launch and stayed in touch over the internet. When I moved to NYC I new Jamie was one of the people I was dying to get to know more and eventually record a podcast conversation with.  While we'd only hung out a handful of times, speaking to her felt like speaking to an old friend. The conversation flowed with ease and meandered into a million directions from intuitive eating to making big decisions, uncertainty that comes with them, self-care, body image, eating disorders, comparison,  self awareness, and career transitions. I caught up with Jamie in a really pivotal moment in her life, she's in a new romantic relationship and about to move away from the east coast for the first time. I can't get enough of Jamie, we had dinner last week and her chill energy, sound advice, and earnestness is magnetic. We recorded this in her Manhattan apartment a couple weeks ago, hope you love listening as much as I loved recording it.  Notes from the Show:-Jamie Mandell Online | Instagram | Facebook  | Twitter-we mention Ruby Warrington’s podcast episode-Intuitive Eating-Jamie's article on "How to Get It All...
