In this episode of NeedleXChange I interview Aaron Fein.Aaron Fein is a mixed media sculptor whose work plays with perceptions, both luminant and psychosocial. Inspired by the fading colours of American flags after 9/11, Fein embarked on a project to create white flags that represented grief and unity. He initially experimented with bleaching and sewing, but eventually discovered the power of machine embroidery. Over the course of several years, he created 193 white flags, each representing a different country. The project became a therapeutic process for Fein and allowed him to explore the possibilities of embroidery as an art form. He later expanded his work to include intricate geometric designs and installations. Courtney had the opportunity to sit with rebel therapist, Debbie Mediate, and explore the intersections, parallels, benefits, and compatibilities of Western psychotherapy and "woo" practices: in this case, specifically astrology and tarot. At the conclusion of this robust conversation, Debbie pulls out her deck and offers Courtney a tarot reading! You'll have to stay tuned to the postscript to find out the impact that reading had on Courtney's career explorations! From our guest: I have never had a sense of fitting in. I have always leaned into my love of adventure and rather impulsive nature. I am curious about most everything and love to explore my inner and outer worlds. Thus was the birth of my private practice, Rebel Therapy. My love of wisdom traditions and divination has been lifelong. What began as curiosity has, over the decades, become a deep knowledge and understanding of the power of tarot, astrology, and shamanic work to assist us with deepening our understanding of self. My own journey with these tools is an ever-present guide. I am, by education and training, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. My career has taken me to both the west and east coast and has included working on acute inpatient psychiatric units, in residential facilities for folks living with schizophrenia, as a member of a mobile crisis team, and most recently as a psychotherapist for several private practice groups, an outpatient mental health clinic, and my own private practice. With my own private practice, I have clinical expertise in traditional modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), trauma-informed work, solution-focused therapy, and psychodynamic therapy, all offered with compassion and warmth in a safe and empowering environment. My passion for the metaphysical combined with my expertise and love of insight therapy brings me to this offering and a change to meet you on your journey to gaining and trusting your inner wisdom. In other words, brands go through adolescence, and it can take some serious therapy, nurturing, and guidance to help them reach successful adulthood. She lays it all out in her recent book,  Teenage Wastebrand: How Your Brand Can Stop Struggling and Start Scaling, and in their discussion, she and Dan discuss some of the highlights, including the eight symptoms of brand adolescence, how to diagnose brand issues, the importance of solid values, and much more. Listen in and learn how to: Investigate the value of carving out a unique niche for a standout brand image. Recognize the potential hazards of ego-driven business practices and how to avoid them. Examine the relationship between well-defined values and a supportive company culture. Design a brand strategy anchored in purpose and value-driven principles. Excel in maintaining an authentic and dependable brand presence through effective messaging and actions. Here's what you can expect from the show: Corporations and brands are just like people which is why they all have life cycles.  How companies can correctly identify and diagnose their brand issues if they've stalled.  Understanding attitudes and behaviors and how they impact buyers.  Fear and misunderstanding of marketing and how it can limit business leaders and brand growth. Marketing is a risky investment because the ROI can often be ambiguous, but it's a risk worth taking. Business owners must learn how to parent their brands through the various stages of life.  How to identify the eight symptoms of brand adolescence. Being brave enough to have hard conversations with your brand about your brand.  Brands have life cycles, and so do customers.  Discipline is necessary to determine your niche.  The need to protect the integrity of your brand through the people you hire. The importance of making a list of values you want to be a part of your culture and your brand.  Notable Quotes “During a summer internship I learned more about what I did not want to do than what I did want to do.” – (10:02)- Evelyn. “When someone says, ‘I hate marketing', I'm not running from that, I'm digging a little bit deeper” – (13:20) – Evelyn.  “I started to try to find ways to explain marketing in non-marketing terms” – (14:15) - Evelyn. “You can't see things when you're too emotionally close” – (15:55) - Evelyn. “As my brand grows, I'm going to become more of a coach and less of a controller.” – (19:05) - Evelyn. “Identity crisis is the most common one (symptom) I see.” – (23:40) - Evelyn. “In order for a brand to get known and grow, it needs to be focused at least during the beginning.” – (37:15) - Evelyn. “Brands can fall out of favor very quickly due to their self-centered behavior being revealed” – (50:15) - Evelyn. “People bring their values to work, and you want to attract people who subscribe to the way you would like to serve your customers.” – (55:06) - Evelyn. “You cannot be crappy to your employees and great to your customers and not have that get out.” – (1:02:10) - Evelyn. Starr Associates Evelyn Starr | LinkedIn Teenage Wastebrand: How Your Brand Can Stop Struggling and Start Scaling Timestamped summary of this episode (Generated by Capsho): 00:00:00 - Introduction,  Dan Nestle introduces the podcast and talks about the importance of understanding the life cycle of brands. Dan shares his concerns as a parent and how it relates to building a successful brand. He introduces his guest, Evelyn Starr, a marketing leader and brand therapist, and author of the book "Teenage Waste Brand." 00:01:20 - Evelyn Starr's Background, Evelyn Starr talks about her background and how she started her career in market research. She worked for companies like Very Fine Products, Dunkin Donuts, and Hasbro. She shares how she started working with small and medium-sized companies to help them with their marketing. 00:08:45 - The Life Cycle of Brands, Dan Nestle asks Evelyn Starr how she got interested in helping brands in their teenage years. Evelyn shares that many business owners don't understand marketing and are fearful of investing in it. She explains how she helps them understand marketing in non-marketing terms. She talks about the different phases in the life cycle of brands and how they can face issues during their turbulent adolescence. 00:17:41 - Identifying Brand Issues, Evelyn Starr talks about how to identify brand issues and how to diagnose them. She talks about the importance of understanding the customer and their needs. She shares examples of how she has helped companies identify their brand issues and how they have overcome them. 00:25:18 - Branding in the Digital Age, Dan Nestle asks Evelyn Starr about branding in the digital age. Evelyn 00:15:00 - Identity Crisis, The first symptom of brand adolescence is an identity crisis. Like in human adolescence, the brand must determine who they want to be and how they want to be perceived. A brand purpose that transcends a particular product and brand attributes that resonate with customers must be determined. 00:23:35 - Symptom Not Stages, Evelyn Starr emphasizes that the symptoms are not sequential, but rather different characteristics of adolescent brands. Each brand may experience some or all eight symptoms at different times. 00:25:23 - Purpose and Attributes, The brand's purpose and attributes are key in resolving the identity crisis symptom. The brand must have a purpose that is transcendent and attributes that resonate with customers. Research and feedback from customers can help define these. 00:28:45 - Therapeutic Process, Similar to a therapeutic process, the brand must go through analyses of the why and what to solve the identity crisis. Exercises like stickies and whiteboards can help in brand discovery, purpose discovery, and attribute discovery. Evelyn Starr provides a step-by-step guide in her book. 00:29:55 - Dealing with Complexity, The conversation begins with Dan asking Evelyn how brands deal with complexity, specifically in a house of brands where there are multiple product brands under a corporate brand. Evelyn explains that each brand needs to know who they are before they can contribute, and the parent company needs to have a unifying purpose for putting the brands together. 00:35:30 - Finding a Niche, The topic of finding a niche comes up in relation to solving the symptom of "suffering from FOMO" or fear of missing out. Evelyn explains that in order for a brand to grow, it needs to be focused and known for something, at least in the beginning. Choosing a niche allows a brand to gain expertise and credibility, and finding a new niche can help a brand expand and grow. 00:39:17 - Fear and Innovation, Fear is a common obstacle for business owners who are afraid of leaving money on the table or missing out on opportunities. Evelyn discusses the importance of leaving fear behind and being open to new directions and innovations. She shares the example of Amazon, who started by focusing on one product (books) before expanding to other products. 00:41:49 - Box Three Solution, Dan shares his experience with directed innovation and the Box Three Solution, which involves finding new audiences, changes to the product, business model, or value chain. Evelyn notes that finding new niches can combat various symptoms of adolescence, including the need to assert independence, make new friends, or overcome fear of missing out. 00:46:06 - Finding Your Niche, Evelyn advises against copying someone else's business model and suggests drilling down further to find an untapped idea. She emphasizes the importance of doing research and discovering new things that align with your brand. 00:48:41 - Self-Centeredness, Evelyn discusses the risk of building a brand solely for profits and not serving the audience. She explains how this behavior can lead to mistrust, loss of productivity, and wasted resources. The solution is to revisit company values that align with serving the customer and the employees. 00:51:20 - The Importance of Company Values, Evelyn explains how values guide behavior and behaviors create culture. She emphasizes the importance of codifying values from the beginning and recruiting people who share those values. A strong company culture leads to a strong brand. 00:54:05 - Trust and Culture, Evelyn explains the connection between trust, culture, and brand. Self-centered behavior can damage a brand's reputation, making it hard to regain trust. A clear set of values that align with serving the customer and the employees can prevent this. 01:01:36 - The Employee Culture, Evelyn discusses how the employee culture is a vital part of the brand. She stresses that the employer brand and the customer-facing brand are all one and the same and that treating employees well is just as important as treating customers well. A strong employee culture leads to a strong brand. 01:02:22 - The Importance of Employee Experience, Businesses should prioritize the well-being of their employees as much as their customers and consumers. The kind of internal culture a company has affects its overall external brand reputation. 01:04:07 - Transparency in Branding, Social media has made it easier for people to share their opinions about a company's internal culture, making transparency in branding more important than ever. It's crucial for marketers and business leaders to recognize that employees are a core stakeholder and audience that must be treated with the utmost care. 01:06:08 - The Impact of Teenage Wastebrand, Evelyn Starr's book, 'Teenage Wastebrand,' highlights the signs of a company that is stuck in a state of adolescence, including a lack of purpose, values, and identity. These brands struggle to stand out in a crowded market and often do not resonate with their intended audience. 01:08:00 - Evolving Your Brand, Evelyn Starr's brand is evolving as she incorporates developmental editing of business books into her work as a consumer insights expert and brand therapist. She helps business owners make confident marketing decisions and aligns her purpose with theirs. 01:14:50 - Why You Should Read 'Teenage Wastebrand,' 'Teenage Wastebrand' is an easily accessible, relatable, and practical guidebook that helps businesses identify their purpose, values, and niche. The book also emphasizes the importance of employee well-being and how transparency in branding is necessary

How does discomfort drive the therapeutic process? Is it required to successfully navigate our uniquely difficult stations of life? This week, I am joined by Tessa Jacques, LMFT to discuss how therapeutic solutions are being harshly impacted by the instant gratification of the modern era. Join me as Tessa and I discuss the nuances of how modern culture creates a weakness in patients by discounting the need to face yourself on the quest to heal. Tessa pursued her undergraduate education in child development and spent several years serving underprivileged families and children in the Head Start program. She later decided to obtain her MA in Clinical Psychology specializing in Maternal Mental Health. Tessa has been working in private practice since 2016 helping new moms adjust to motherhood. Recently Tessa has noticed the mental health industry has been progressively leaning left, watching most clinicians follow suit. Tessa founded Motherlode Counseling in Auburn, CA in 2019 where she currently works with individuals and couples as well as supervising pre-licensed therapists and training them to build their own practices. Recently, Tessa has shifted her focus to advocating for clients and clinicians who do not feel served by this new trend on her Instagram @theuncensoredtherapist. “This disease does not discriminate and it’s really hard to get sober.” -Nicole Bifano Today, Ben and I are chatting to Nicole Bifano, a primary worker at Rock Recovery Center and an LCSW, about the therapeutic process, the steps of detoxification, and the details of AL-ANON membership. Why Nicole Chose to Work with Recovering Addicts Nicole felt called by God to work in the realm of addiction treatment. Working at a treatment center was her only option when she graduated. Although Nicole didn’t plan on working in an alcohol and drug rehab center, she fell in love with her job. “I was able to discover who I was in the process as I had an attachment to this disease since I grew up around it.”  Nicole’s Perspective on Counseling Addicts She realizes that it’s not about the substance; for addicts, it’s the underlying emotional imbalance that brings them into addiction. “For me, it’s about identifying with people on a human level.” Nicole looks to connect with those in recovery to show them that they are loved and cared for as human beings. “Connecting with people on their level gives you the ability to help them.” Breaking Through the Addictive Mindset Clients have a range of issues, and sometimes they are still in the party and drugging stage. By looking at their past life history and experiences, Nicole can get a good insight into the source of their addiction and work with them to move past their emotional grief. Many of her clients don’t feel loved or that they don’t belong, and addiction to drugs gave them a feeling of inclusion.  Listen in and find out the multiple facets of addiction, how Nicole facilitates the healing process, and how she guides her patients through the recovery process. My hypothesis is that if we deliberately put humility back into the system, we do two things. One, we take away the natural conflicting element of the therapeutic process, the natural elements of conflict. There are two humans. There are two egos. They're in a room, and because of the context, it becomes like tennis. It becomes like boxing. It becomes like some competitive sport. Nobody means for it to be that way. It's just that, whether you're the coach or the therapist or the client in this scenario, the dumb shaved monkeys that we are, we kind of lean towards playing dominance games, whether we want to or not. That's just the way it goes. So before you know it, you're playing ping pong over your depression, you're playing tennis over your anxiety. You're in a boxing match with your coach, with your therapist, over the dynamics of the grieving process, or whether you're doing the right kind of work to help you to grieve for the death and the loss of your last relationship, as an example of a common thing that people would see a coach or counselor for. So number one, the humility takes away from that dynamic. It reminds us consciously and with intent, "Look, this is just a conversation between two adults. It's not surgery. I'm not under general anesthetic. Nobody can cut the anxiety out of me." So it kind of reminds us that it's like a Socratic process. It's like philosophy. In fact, we already know it's known that you can trace the roots of psychology back to philosophy. But this dynamic of two people talking, I mean is that not the essence of a philosophical method? Is that not like the Socratic method? You're basically debating with the hope that you're going to have a positive outcome. So as well as taking away from this ego versus ego fight, it also reminds us that this is not magic and this is just a conversation between two consenting adults, where it is presumed that we have the same goal in mind, which is to feel better at the end of it. Right? The second thing that I think bringing this level of humility in is, it kind of moves the ego out of the way, and when I say ego in this context, obviously it is implicit. I'm not talking about the healthy ego. I'm talking about that side of the self that clings to dominance, that wants to be right, that wants to be in charge, that wants to be in control, that secretly loathes the therapeutic process, secretly loathes the humbling of having to come and ask another adult for help, where the part of life that the ego, one part of the ego is going to be going, "You should be able to do that." In Episode 29. Luke talks to music therapist and GIM practitioner/trainer Martin Lawes. Martin qualified as a music therapist in 1999. Since then his work has been in special needs education, in adult mental health (including eating disorders, acute and forensic psychiatry) and in palliative care. He is a BAMT registered supervisor and has been visiting lecturer on several of the music therapy MA trainings. Martin is additionally qualified in Guided Imagery and Music, GIM. He is a former chair of both the Education and Training Committee, and the board of the European Association of Music and Imagery, EAMI. Martin is also an approved GIM trainer and founder of the London based Integrative GIM Training Programme which is delivered by a team of experienced GIM trainers and researchers from the UK, Europe and the US. Martin’s aspiration is that GIM will gradually become as established in UK music therapy as it is in some other European countries, with therapists equipped to use a range of research-based GIM and simpler Music and Imagery, or MI methods, that complement their existing ways of working and extend what they have to offer clients. Martin has published a number of articles. One is about the evaluation of music therapy with children with autism. Others are about the application of contemporary psychoanalytic thinking to music therapy and about GIM. Martin currently has an article in press in the BJMT about the therapist’s use of reverie, or ‘dreaming in music’ as he calls it, in improvisation-based music therapy. Luke and Martin talk about the music experience which led Martin to train in music therapy, about GIM and MI, and about ‘dreaming in music’. Therapy is a powerful tool for anyone, and today we’ll focus on the role of therapy for someone who is struggling with addiction. My guest, Josiah, is a licensed therapist who has been in the addiction industry for around five years. He has a past history of addiction, so he deeply understands this topic from various angles. Early in our conversation, we’ll take a deep dive into why asking whether a therapist has struggled with addiction is the wrong question. This is a common question for addicts to ask, but we compare it to asking an oncologist whether she has ever had cancer before letting her treat yours. We’ll also explore the importance of vulnerability, what to expect when you start going to a therapist for the first time, and much more. Show Notes [01:23] Tom introduces today’s guest, Josiah, a licensed therapist. [01:59] Josiah tells listeners a bit about himself and explains how he got into therapy and the addiction industry. [03:15] What does Josiah say to the opinion that a therapist should have personal experience with addiction? [05:23] Josiah shares something else that he tells people who are concerned about their therapist having had an addiction problem. [07:18] We hear Josiah’s thoughts on the root behind the question of whether a therapist has a history of addiction. [11:18] Why would someone want to see a therapist? [14:37] Tom elaborates on the role of vulnerability in what Josiah has been talking about. [16:39] Outside of drug addiction and alcoholism, who should really see a therapist? [19:45] We learn about the #1 thing that Josiah tries to do in his therapy practice. [21:40] Tom points out that you need to get through the uncomfortable to have growth. [23:25] “What you put into therapy is what you’re going to get out of it,” Josiah explains. [25:20] What should someone expect if they’re walking into a therapist’s office for the first time? [28:20] The length of therapy is determined between the therapist and the client, Josiah points out. [29:35] Tom talks about people’s expectations of the length of therapy, and how it relates to holding onto control. [31:08] Josiah talks more about the potential expectations when you start therapy, and why they’re problematic. [33:55] How do you know when you’re done with therapy? [37:01] Josiah shares his final thoughts for listeners, pointing out that therapy isn’t about whether there’s something wrong with you. Links and Resources: Al-Anon

In a rebroadcast of episode two,  we explore the breadth and depth of emotions so listeners can use what we discuss to help enrich lives or help protect from or reduce harm.  We focus on the roles #emotion #credibility and #deception play in the workplace. In this episode we talk with SJ Lennie who is a DI at Greater Manchester Police who is taking a sabbitcal to complete her PHd at Manchester Metropolitan University.  Her area of research, emotional inauthenticity and the psychological impact of emotional labour of police officers.  Having been a police officer for 15 years with a successful career at Hampshire and Greater Manchester Police and a detective inspector. We talk about the impact that organisational rules and culture have on both the emotions that you are allowed to display and to feel.  This conversation boradens out into the coping mechanisms and strategies that police officers use to help navigate the emotional labour (the emotions they feel) and the emotional work (working with others emotions) that is required in their job.  Some examples of these coping mechanisms include; suppression, repression, alcohol and acting.  Interestingly, SJ's personal experience and her research is showing that the majority of strategies that are used are psychologically unhealthy for the officers. Finally we bring the conversation together to think about what we the listeners can learn and take from this into our daily lives or into our workplaces. We talk with each other about a variety of research papers and books and you can find links to them all here:   Goffman, E. You know that feeling you get when someone puts you down? How about when you feel like you're doing everything right but that one person tells you how you're doing it wrong?   In segment one, I read an email from someone who gives me some critical feedback about how I communicate my message over the airwaves. He also tells me something I'm doing blatantly wrong. I share my reaction and the emotions I went through, and what you yourself probably go through when someone points out something that you did wrong as well. Sometimes there is truth in what they say. It can hurt and help at the same time. And, more importantly, can we see a bit of ourselves in the critical person?   In segment two, I read a message from someone who has no idea how to start a therapeutic process. He isn't sure where to begin with his many challenges and isn't sure how anyone could even help him. I outline the steps to starting a journey of getting help for whatever issues you are dealing with, giving you questions to ask yourself and resources to utilize.   In segment three, what happens to you after going through a lot of emotional pain from the death of loved ones? One listener says it's like damage to your soul that can never be repaired. Is it repairable? How can you deal with a lot of death in your life? When does the grieving end? There are always ups and downs to grieving but hopefully after listening to this episode there will be more ups.   The soul, or spirit, or psyche, however you want to see it, can feel like it's missing something. It's time to rebuild what's missing. It's not replacing it, it's nurturing that part of you that needs it most.   Today's episode is sponsored by Casper Mattresses. Welcome to episode 68 of the Therapy Chat Podcast with host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C. This is the third episode in the integrative mental health series featuring Lisa Mitchell. She became a therapist 20 years ago — and for the first 10 years of her private practice, taught thousands of therapists how to integrate art into their work safely and effectively. As she walked along her teaching path, she made a surprising discovery. Most of the therapists she met already identified as “creative types” — but most were nervous about incorporating “creativity” into their work, with clients.  In the episode, Lisa talks about the work she does, working in her private practice in Sacramento, California. Her two niche categories of people she works with are teens and professional women, she helps them to work more with art to understand themselves better and to find experiences that help them resolve the issues going on in their lives. She also touches upon of the five stages of the creative process and how the therapist and client can embrace the vulnerable space of being curious, open and collaborative, helping to navigate the creative process together.  Resources http://www.innercanvas.com Creativity as Co-Therapist: The Practitioner's Guide to the Art of Psychotherapy (Book)  Visit Therapy Chat website at Http://therapychatpodcast.com and send host Laura Reagan a voice message letting her know what you think of Therapy Chat!
