Kelson Williams is a regular 12-year-old - he loves Marvel and playing outside with his friends - but he's living with cerebral palsy. He has a medical support dog, Gus, but insurance wouldn't cover the $15,000 for Gus's training. So Kelson and his family turned to Help Hope Live, a nonprofit that helps fundraise for medical costs, and they raised so much that they are now working toward a stretch goal to get Kelson a new wheelchair. Racquel Williams talks with Kelson, his mother Stephanie, and Melanie Johnson, Client Services Coordinator at Help Hope Live. Then, on Shara in the City, we talk with a music legend - Rev. Joe Williams, the last living member of the gospel group The Dixie Hummingbirds. Shara Dae Howard visits him in North Philly to hear about how he got to sing with the group that he admired for years. Live from Terrificon, this panel reunites Ralph Macchio, Ann Nocenti, and John Romita Jr. to revisit one of Daredevil's most memorable creative periods. Ralph sets the stage with behind-the-scenes stories of the handoff from writer Denny O'Neil to Frank Miller, and ultimately to Ann Nocenti, charting the evolution of the Man Without Fear through shifting creative visions.Ann and John share how the grit, danger, and energy of New York City's real nightlife shaped their take on Matt Murdock's world, infusing it with street-level authenticity and vivid, flawed characters like Typhoid Mary and Shotgun. The conversation takes a wild detour as the trio recalls their “freaky” trip to Paris representing Marvel — a surreal adventure filled with culture shock, unexpected encounters, and a dash of chaos. It's a lively mix of comics history, personal anecdotes, and the creative alchemy that kept Daredevil swinging high.

Noah Millman: from finance to the culture industry

    Razib Khan's Unsupervised Learning

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 15, 2025 113:13

Today Razib talks to Noah Millman. Millman is an American screenwriter and filmmaker, as well as a political columnist and cultural critic based in Brooklyn, New York. He is the film and theater critic for Modern Age; previously he was a columnist for The Week (2015–2022) and a senior editor at The American Conservative (2012–2017). Millman writes the newsletter Gideon's Substack, and his work has also appeared in outlets such as The New York Times and Politico. He graduated from Yale University and initially worked on Wall Street for 16 years, starting in a hedge fund's mail room, before leaving after the financial crisis to pursue creative endeavors full-time. Millman has been a producer on seven films, and written three and directed three. His most recent film is Resentment, and he is working on a novel, Fables of a Jewish Century. Razib and Millman begin their conversation discussing their history as bloggers who began writing early in the first decade of the century, in the wake of George W. Bush's invasion of Iraq. Millman discusses his disillusionment with neoconservatism, and his evolution into a moderate, if heterodox, Democrat. They also discuss their positionality in a political commentary landscape that has radically shifted over the last twenty years, and what it's like to be strongly partisan. They discuss how their views of religion have changed, especially in the wake of the New Atheist movement after 9/11 and the emergence of psychedelic spirituality in the 2020s. Millman articulates his views as a Jew whose own theological commitments are minimal, stating that he believes that the “Hindus are right about God” but John Calvin was probably right about humans. In the second half of the discussion, they pivot to the arts, beginning with how film as a medium has developed over the last generation, from the high tide of independent films in 1999 and through the “comic book” movie heyday of the 2010s, and on finally to the reemergence of more classic movies like Tom Cruise's Top Gun: Maverick 2 and Brad Pitt's F1. Razib argues that the Marvel universe exhausted its creative possibilities, and the same content no longer compels the younger generations, especially in a 90-minute format. Millman addresses whether film as a medium has reached the end of the line as a mass medium, and how fan-culture and “stan” culture has transformed the experience of the arts. He also asserts that cultural fragmentation is driven by technology, as consumers have a much greater range of options in their choices than in the past. Millman observes that as top-down cultural dynamics have collapsed, shifts are now driven by bottom-up drives. He also argues that movies will ‌continue to be a major art form because filmmaking is now far cheaper than it was in the past, but he is not optimistic about the future of mass-market tent-pole films that can transcend myriad fan subcultures. Movie studios still do not know which films will become hits and which will flop, even the magic of Pixar and Marvel Studios are no longer a sure thing. In fact, Millman argues that fragmentation has masked the revival of art forms like the novel. As the gatekeepers are gone, many consume low art, with middle-aged people reading copious amounts of YA fiction. Millman argues that any aspiring artist needs to grapple with the competitive realities of the new attention economy. Technology has made it easier for anyone to create art because new tools are cheaper and self-publishing is now a real option for writers. However, all of this unleashed creativity is competing for the same amount of funding, support and a relatively fixed audience.

[School of Movies 2025] This film began life before James Gunn was abruptly fired overnight, by Marvel. It languished for years through the triumph of Endgame, then the Pandemic, and Gunn's hiring by DC to direct their Suicide Squad sequel. The man who came back to pick up the script had been changed, and while Superman (2025) shows the sheer optimistic joy he's capable of imbuing his projects with, this farewell to the Guardians is a dark, furious requiem of betrayal, loss, bitter conflict and ultimately redemption. In choosing to make it all about Rocket Raccoon, the secret weapon of the MCU was taken out of the picture. He is attacked by newcomer Adam Warlock on Knowhere home turf, in a failed act of corporate reclamation. His killswitch is triggered, leaving him in a coma and it is up to the Guardians to investigate the Doctor Moreau-inspired High Evolutionary, and find out how to bring Rocket back. This leaves him absent for much of the present-day movie, stuck reliving his tragic past, and the earliest friends he made. These tragic events would twist his future actions into those of anger and neurotic rejection of even his closest companions. It is unlike any other MCU film, deeply personal and imbued with such vociferous anger that it actually becomes a mess, half hanging onto what was originally intended, half channelling the mixed, spiking emotions of going back to deal with your monster, saying goodbye to your dear friends and moving on to other and better things. The world is better for the confluence of events that led us to getting our new Superman and a brighter future of the DC Universe, but it was Gunn who took the damage, and this film exemplifies that. As regular listeners will know, I spent seven years living in the greater Puget Sound area and despite having lived in eight different states, it's one of two places that will always be home to me. There's something about small Washington State towns that can feel delightfully out of time and there's no greater contrast to them than the technology centric hub that is Seattle crowned by its futuristic Space Needle. It elicits a range of complex emotions as a former local that the visitor will never understand primary among them is a clash between modern advancement and the struggle of smaller coastal communities to hold onto their ways of life and cultural identities. This was my personal filter going into reading The Stoneshore Register, a delightful new graphic novel from Dark Horse Comics and I have the perfect person to hang out to tell us all about it, first time guest G. The campaign follows reports that 14 dogs died in Albany in June after being left in a hot RV overnight. This year in the U.S. alone, at least 94 dogs and cats have died from heat-related causes, including at least 72 inside vehicles. On a 70-degree day, the temperature inside a parked car can soar to 99 degrees in 20 minutes. This week on Men of Steel, Case and Jmike are joined by writer and critic Jesse Fresco to dig into the early 2000s series Cla$$War. We unpack the political fury, superhero deconstruction, and lasting relevance of this overlooked gem from the Bush-era boom in gritty, socially charged comics. #MenOfSteelPod #Cla$$War #RobWilliams #SupermanAdjacent #JesseFresco #ComicsPodcast   Support us on Patreon! patreon.com/CertainPOVMedia   Men of Steel Full Episode Originally aired: August 15, 2025 Edited by Sophia Ricciardi Scored by Geoff Moonen   Certain Point Of View is a podcast network brining you all sorts of nerdy goodness! Writer Rob Williams influenced by Bill Hicks and Marvel's Miracle Man, blending humor with serious themes of government superhero programs. Characters feature a Superman-like hero and an Enola Gay team reflecting various archetypes, but backstory is minimal focusing more on action. The commentary emphasizes American superheroes as 'deterrents' entangled in corruption and drug operations rather than showcasing true class conflict. Artwork utilized innovative computer coloring for the early 2000s, with notable scenes praised for their intensity and execution. The series is linked to broader cultural events, including the Patriot Act and militarized entertainment, creating a lasting impact on the genre. Story arcs reveal escalating tensions, ending ambiguously without showing direct conflict or resolution in the finale. Hosts reflect on the comic's themes feeling 'adolescent' today, yet resonate with current events like rising political tensions and violence. Class War recommended alongside classics like The Authority and Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, highlighted for its unfinished nature and mystique. The discussion underscores a shift in superhero portrayals, questioning the effectiveness of traditional heroes in the current socio-political landscape.   Notes ️ Introduction and Setup (00:00 - 09:36) Discussion of Class War comic as political commentary on post-9/11 America, described as 'what if Superman was pissed off about 9/11'. Jesse Fresco returns after Jaguar Sharks podcast ended in January, currently working on a novel after crossing 200 pages. Class War intended as 12-issue series but only 6 issues published - first 3 in 2002, final 3 in 2004 by Com X publisher. Notable art style change between Trevor Harrison (issues 1-3) and Travel Foreman (issues 4-6), both considered high quality for indie publication. Historical Context and Influences (09:36 - 18:49) Comic written before 9/11 but published after, coincidentally capturing post-9/11 American sentiment perfectly. Received major attention from Wizard magazine and early comic websites despite being small indie publication. Writer Rob Williams heavily influenced by comedian Bill Hicks, directly copying Kennedy assassination joke in comic. Williams cited Marvel Man/Miracle Man as major influence, both featuring government superhero programs with Nazi scientist connections. ‍️ Character Analysis and Comic Structure (18:49 - 27:56) Superman-type character design with mostly white bodysuit, blue stripe, and star pattern - described as 'patriotic Apollo'. Minimal backstory provided beyond brief flashback showing protagonist's brother died of heroin overdose. Enola Gay superhero team includes The American, Heavyweight (Luke Cage-type), Icon (Wonder Woman analog), and Confusion (psychic character). ️ Political Commentary and Themes (27:56 - 38:02) Reveals American superheroes used as 'deterrents' rather than weapons, involved in drug trafficking operations. Despite title 'Class War,' actual class conflict rarely shown - more focused on government corruption than economic inequality. Problematic portrayal of Black character written by British creators, described as 'Mike Tyson as super soldier'. Art and Production Quality (38:02 - 48:12) Utilized cutting-edge computer coloring and gradients that were revolutionary for early 2000s comics. Heavyweight vs American battle particularly praised, featuring brutal jaw-punching scene later parodied by Garth Ennis. Com X publisher folded after initial run, Image Comics later acquired reprint rights. Cultural Impact and Comparisons (48:12 - 58:18) Frequently compared to Warren Ellis's Authority series despite Williams claiming unfamiliarity. Influenced Garth Ennis's The Boys, Warren Ellis's Black Summer, and Mark Millar's War Heroes. Part of broader cultural shift including 'freedom fries,' Patriot Act, and militarized entertainment. Story Structure Analysis (58:19 - 01:08:43) Issue 1 - Superman burns 'LIAR' into President's forehead; Issue 2 - Heavyweight fight; Issue 3 - Bridge episode; Issues 4-6 - Government conspiracy revelation. Series ends with American and Isaac preparing for civil war, never showing actual conflict or resolution. Heavyweight confirmed killed by shield weapon, Jefferson transforms into monster. ️ Modern Relevance Discussion (01:08:44 - 01:18:51) Comic feels 'adolescent' and 'naive' when read today, but captured appropriate anger for its time. Hosts discuss how recent events (CEO shooting, political tensions) make comic's themes more relevant. Question whether Superman-type heroes work in current political climate versus Punisher-style vigilantes. Conclusion and Recommendations (01:18:52 - 01:25:43) Recommended alongside The Authority, Garth Ennis's 303, and Superman/Batman: Public Enemies. Better remembered as unfinished work with mystique than potentially disappointing completion. Plugs for CPOV Media Patreon, Movie Struck podcast, and Discord community.

Jared riffs on Swift's internet tribalism, the romantic economics of dating her (hi, Travis Kelce), and even a snake-related bathroom demolition courtesy of Zoe Kravitz. Along the way, he skewers wild fan theories, Martha Stewart's Real Housewives shade, and Leonardo DiCaprio's so-called “mortified” pat-down. Add in Dua Lipa birthday buzz, a Vanity Fair shake-up, and one eyebrow-raising Kelly Clarkson ex subplot, and you've got an episode that's equal parts gossip, comedy, and “did he just say that?”

Natasha Romanoff. Daughter. Sister. Avenger.Natasha made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Iron Man 2 as a mysterious S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, quickly becoming a core member of the Avengers despite lacking superpowers. The character evolved from a supporting femme fatale into one of the MCU's most complex heroes; a former Russian child assassin grappling with her dark past while seeking redemption through heroic acts, and finally finding a family. Her journey culminated in the ultimate sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame, giving her life to obtain the Soul Stone and save the universe.Marvel had been talking about a solo Black Widow film for years since her 2010 debut, but it had never come to pass. It's not the first time a solo film had been talked about for Natasha Romanoff. Lions Gate held the rights to the character in the early 2000s, but that movie idea was scuppered due to the failure of other female-led action movies. Black Widow's solo film finally arrived in 2021, making it an eleven-year wait from her MCU introduction. The delay was attributed to Marvel's former leadership's reluctance to greenlight female-led superhero films, concerns about their commercial viability, as well as the planned Infinity Saga narrative needing to focus on introducing other characters, like Black Panther and Captain Marvel. Black Widow would give fans a much-needed backstory for Natasha, as well as introduce her sister, Yelena. The importance of both characters extends beyond individual heroism to representation. Natasha proved female characters could carry major action sequences and emotional weight in the MCU, while Yelena's introduction ensures the Black Widow legacy continues, representing a new generation of complex female heroes who can anchor future MCU stories.I would love to hear your thoughts on Black Widow (2021) !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast!
