My weekly german newsletter can be booked here steady. I work as a keynote speaker, panelist and author. Feel free to contact me! Liljana Tomoviç is a professor from the University of Belgrade with decades of experience. As her research takes place primarily in the midst of nature, she has a very deep insight into the changes that climate change is already having on the country. Aleksandar Matković is a member of the "Green-Left Front", the main left-wing opposition party in the Serbian parliament, where he helps shape the party's new economic policy. As a researcher he turned into a political with questioning the dependency of his country regarding Chinese corporates and got death threats after questioning lithium mining in Serbia. Read his Open letter regarding Rio Tinto and the “mining colony that Serbia is turning into”. In this episode of my podcast, we talk about the very specific effects that the planned mining deal, which in Germany is primarily based on the lithium requirements of car manufacturers, will have on people in Serbia, from environmental destruction to displacement. We talk about state violence, which hundreds of thousands of people in the country refuse to be intimidated by because they are afraid of a future in which their country can no longer be worth living in because it has been exploited in a neo-colonialist manner. In July of this year, Belgrade gave the green light for lithium extraction, having temporarily halted it two years previously following pressure from environmentalists. Germany needs lithium, especially in the automotive industry. Germany consumes more metal than many of its neighbouring countries, a third of which is used by the automotive industry. This means that Germany's consumption of raw materials is far above a globally fair level. In the interview, we explain that instead of aggressively securing access to critical metals, it would be important to reduce the overall demand for raw materials, emphasises Reckordt. Above all, this would mean building smaller and fewer cars, initiating a turnaround in transport that reduces dependence on cars, recycling raw materials and drastically reducing energy consumption in industry. As a consequence, this would mean carrying out a real green transformation and actually reorganising the economy in a climate-neutral and ecological way instead of creating rebound effects and shifting environmental and human rights problems abroad. This does not go hand in hand with Germany's self-image as a growing export and leading automotive and industrial nation. For those of you who understand German, I also recommend the previous episode that I recorded with Hannah from Powershift. Here we shed light on the almost 100 per cent metal dependency of Germany (and the German automotive industry) on neo-colonial business relationships with countries in the Global South. Serbia Protests, Mining Project, and Environmental Concerns Aleksandar discussed the escalating protests in Serbia due to changing laws allowing mining operations. He shared his involvement in internationalizing the struggle, establishing an ecological organization, and signing a declaration of international solidarity. He also mentioned receiving death threats after criticizing the economic aspects of the mine. Katja added that a protest group member was sentenced to two years in jail, further intimidating protesters. Aleksandar discussed the potential lithium mining project in Serbia, highlighting its potential environmental and social impacts. Ljiljana emphasized the importance of the region's unique landscape for the survival of many populations in Serbia. Both agreed that the project poses a complex problem with various economic, social, and environmental risks. More details on my website: https://katja-diehl.de/.

Car manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen are developing artificially intelligent (AI) virtual assistants that can enhance the driving experience. Mercedes-Benz has introduced the MBUX virtual assistant, which can provide a hyper-personalized experience by making relevant suggestions to the driver. Volkswagen is incorporating Chat GPT into its IDA voice assistant, allowing drivers to have enriched conversations and control car features. However, some experts raise concerns about the focus on AI systems, arguing that automakers should prioritize styling and reliability. Privacy and the convenience of voice commands are also concerns. Despite these concerns, automakers believe virtual assistants can benefit consumers and are continuously evolving the technology. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tonyphoang/message
Fisker, a budding actor on the global electric automotive stage, revealed this week that they are temporarily suspending vehicle production. The pause is a tactic to deal with a pressing liquidity issue, triggered by a softer than expected market response to electric automobiles. They plan to secure a lifeline investment of $150 million to steer their enterprise through this challenging financial juncture. Fisker, whose operations are rooted in California, maintains a dedicated commitment towards crafting 'the world's most emotional and sustainable electric cars.' Even with this noble mission guiding their operations, Fisker's annual production yield barely exceeded a thousand units for electric vehicles on a global scale. Inclusive of carryover from the previous production year and including the current year models, the company holds an inventory of approximately 4,700 vehicles. The company remains confident that the rounded-off value of this vehicle pool, based on computed metrics as of mid-March 2024, surpasses $200 million. Joyrides from Fisker's assembly lines will hit a speed breaker for a period of six weeks, beginning the week of March 18, 2024. The company aims to fine-tune inventory logistics during this period and foresees it as a strategic moment to tie-up some crucial financing requisites. Unsettling insights from last month's reports by Reuters suggested that Fisker's future hangs in the balance. The concern stemmed from apparent signs indicating debatable financial solvency within the company. This led to considerable speculation about the brand's viability. The situation became tenser last week when the Wall Street Journal carried a report suggesting that Fisker had sought external consultation in preparation for a potential bankruptcy filing. This move was perceived as a direct reflection of the company's ongoing struggle. All of this comes at a time when the current administration, helmed by President Biden, declared it would persist with its focused deterrence of the conventional gas-based automotive sector. The administration proposed the implementation of some of the most rigorous pollution limits ever experienced by vehicle manufacturers. Reactions from media outlets such as the Washington Post highlighted the contentious aspect of these proposed measures. In their coverage, they underscored how this rule would compel car manufacturers to escalate their production and sales of electric vehicles whilst dramatically cutting down on carbon emissions from gas-fueled models. The EPA confidently defended its proposed pollution limitation standard, believed to be a potentially litigious issue. They argued that the regulation would successfully diminish carbon emissions by more than 7 billion tons. According to their analysis, this would translate into an annual windfall benefit of $100 billion for the country. This announcement met with instant and vehement opposition across multiple conservative factions, which expressed a fear that this strategy might inflict damage on the national automotive industry. The imposition of such limitations was perceived as a potential threat to an industry employing millions. In a strong-worded statement, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), a notable name from the conservative camp, took issue with the administration's preference for electric vehicles. For him, such a move undermines consumer freedom and reflects a shift away from traditional American practices and preferences. He contended that the needs of American households were being unnecessarily overlooked to cater to the demands of radical environmentalists. The Senator flagged his concern that these policies could negatively impact the job market in the automotive sector. His call was clear: it was high time the administration revisited such regulatory overstretch. In another similarly themed news report, it was noted that the Biden administration was proceeding with its plan to phase out gasoline-based cars in the US. The shift towards an electric future, while uncontroversially noble in its intent, remains a hot button issue and continues to draw ire from various quarters. However, the future of the industry hinges on a balance between sustainable practices and economic feasibility, with questions remaining about how these principles can coexist without compromising consumer choice or causing excessive disruption to established industry stakeholders. Parts made with forced labour in China may be being used in cars around the world, according to a new report by Human Rights Watch. It says it has found "credible evidence" that aluminium producers use workers from government-backed labour transfer programmes linked to the forced labour of Uighurs and other ethnic minorities. The report further details how the metal could then have entered the supply chains of global car companies. For more analysis, we speak to Jim Wormington, lead author of the report.
Last year was a record for electric vehicles in the U.S., with more than 1.2 million sold. That was 50 percent higher than in 2022, yet there are signs that demand for EV's appears to be slowing and may not be quite as intense as either automakers or the Biden administration had expected. AM radio has been a cornerstone of emergency communication, providing vital information during public emergencies and disasters. However, as electric vehicles gain popularity, major automobile manufacturers are gradually phasing out AM radio. Let's delve deeper into the critical role of AM radio in emergency communication, explore the reasons behind car manufacturers' reluctance to include it in electric vehicles, and expand on the ongoing debate surrounding the AM for Every Vehicle Act.The Importance of AM Radio in Emergency CommunicationAM radio has established its reputation as a reliable and indispensable medium for emergency communication, consistently delivering real-time updates and critical information to communities during times of crisis. One of the key strengths of AM radio lies in its extensive coverage area, which allows it to reach a wide audience across vast geographical regions. Unlike other communication services that may have limitations or face disruptions, AM radio operates on a long wavelength that enables its signals to travel long distances and penetrate obstacles such as buildings and rough terrain. As a result, even in remote or rural areas with limited infrastructure, AM radio can provide a lifeline of information to residents during emergencies.Another advantage of AM radio is the simplicity of its receivers. Unlike more complex communication technologies that require internet connectivity or smartphone usage, AM radios are widely accessible and easy to use. This simplicity is crucial during emergencies when power outages or disruptions may render advanced devices inoperable. In such situations, AM radios powered car batteries become invaluable tools, ensuring that individuals can receive essential updates and instructions regardless of the availability of electricity or internet access.Emergency managers and authorities rely heavily on AM radio to transmit alerts and instructions to the public. Critical information can be disseminated swiftly and efficiently through designated emergency broadcast stations, reaching a broad audience. AM radio acts as a unifying platform that bridges gaps in communication during disasters, enabling emergency managers to convey evacuation orders, weather warnings, public safety announcements, and other vital instructions. This direct communication channel is essential when other communication systems, such as cell phone networks or internet-based platforms, become overloaded or fail due to increased usage or infrastructure damage. Moreover, AM radio plays a crucial role in areas where internet access or smartphone usage is limited. This is especially significant for rural communities and underserved populations facing connectivity challenges. AM radio is a primary source of news, information, and emergency alerts in these regions. It ensures that individuals without reliable internet or smartphones can stay informed and make informed decisions during critical situations. Additionally, studies have shown that many AM radio users belong to the older demographic, who may be less likely to utilize internet-based communication methods. AM radio remains a trusted and familiar medium for these individuals, keeping them connected to their communities and providing important updates during emergencies. The reliability and effectiveness of AM radio in emergency communication cannot be overstated. Its extensive coverage, resilience in the face of disruptions, and simplicity of receivers make it an essential tool for transmitting real-time updates and critical information to communities during crises. As technology evolves, it is vital to recognize the continued importance of AM radio as a backup communication system, ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their access to advanced devices or connectivity, can stay informed and safe during emergencies.Car Manufacturers' Reluctance and ConcernsNumerous automobile manufacturers, including BMW, Mazda, Tesla, Volkswagen, Volvo, Polestar, and Rivian, have decided to remove AM radio from their electric vehicle models. These manufacturers argue that the interference caused by electric car batteries adversely affects AM radio transmissions. The complex electrical systems and high-frequency noise generated by electric motors can disrupt the reception of AM signals.Additionally, car manufacturers contend that alternative methods of disseminating emergency alerts, such as smartphone applications and internet-based platforms, can adequately replace the role of AM radio. They believe that advancements in technology have opened up new avenues for emergency communication, rendering the physical inclusion of AM radio in vehicles unnecessary.Legislation and the AM for Every Vehicle ActThe AM for Every Vehicle Act has garnered bipartisan support in Congress in response to the removal of AM radio from electric vehicles. The proposed legislation seeks to mandate the inclusion of AM radio in all new cars without imposing additional costs on consumers. Lawmakers backing the bill aim to preserve AM radio's critical emergency communication network, ensuring that individuals can access essential information during emergencies.Proponents of the AM for Every Vehicle Act argue that the interference concerns raised by car manufacturers can be addressed through technological advancements. They highlight the importance of maintaining a robust national emergency communication infrastructure, especially when other communication channels become compromised or unavailable.Debating the Inclusion of AM Radio in Electric VehiclesThe Alliance for Automotive Innovation, an industry trade group, opposes the inclusion of AM radio in electric vehicles, asserting that emergency alerts can be effectively delivered through various alternative channels. The group questions the necessity of physically including AM radio in vehicles, emphasizing that existing warning systems can adequately reach individuals without solely relying on this medium. However, proponents of the AM for Every Vehicle Act stress the necessity of preserving AM radio for public safety reasons. Lt. Col. Christopher DeMaise of the New Jersey State Police highlights the increasing frequency of severe weather events, cybercrimes, active shooter incidents, and terrorist threats, emphasizing the critical role of an effective 'alert and warning' system in safeguarding the public. While the automobile industry continues to phase out AM radio from electric vehicles due to concerns about interference, the AM for Every Vehicle Act has emerged as a bipartisan effort to mandate its inclusion. Advocates stress the indispensable role of AM radio in emergency communication, particularly during public emergencies and for underserved communities. Striking a balance between the evolving automotive landscape and the critical need for a robust emergency communication infrastructure requires careful consideration of technological advancements and the unique needs of various populations. As the debate surrounding the inclusion of AM radio in electric vehicles unfolds, it is essential to recognize the evolving landscape of automotive technology. Car manufacturers are constantly striving to improve the efficiency and performance of electric vehicles, which has led to the development of complex electrical systems and advanced battery technologies. While these advancements have undeniable benefits, they have also introduced challenges in terms of AM radio interference.Technological solutions can be explored to address car manufacturers' concerns. Researchers and engineers can work collaboratively to develop innovative approaches to mitigate the interference caused by electric car batteries. Shielding techniques, filtering mechanisms, and enhanced receiver designs could minimize the disruption of AM radio signals, allowing for their seamless integration into electric vehicles.Furthermore, advancements in digital broadcasting technology can be leveraged to enhance the compatibility of AM radio with electric vehicles. Digital AM broadcasting, such as HD Radio, offers improved sound quality and reduced susceptibility to interference. By promoting the adoption of digital AM radio standards, the automotive industry can ensure that electric vehicles remain compatible with emergency communication systems while meeting the demands of modern consumers. However, it is crucial to recognize that while alternative communication channels such as smartphone applications and internet-based platforms have gained popularity, they are not infallible. These digital systems can become overwhelmed during emergencies, especially in areas with limited connectivity or widespread power outages. With its broad coverage and simplicity, AM radio continues to serve as a reliable backup communication method that reaches a wide audience, including those using the internet or smartphones. The ongoing debate regarding including AM radio in electric vehicles revolves around striking a balance between technological advancements and the critical role that AM radio plays in emergency communication. While car manufacturers have expressed concerns about interference, addressing these challenges through technological solutions is imperative rather than completely phasing out AM radio. The AM for Every Vehicle Act reflects the bipartisan support for preserving the vital emergency communication network AM radio provides. By considering the unique needs of different populations, harnessing technological innovations, and ensuring a robust national emergency communication infrastructure, we can maintain the reliability of AM radio while embracing the future of electric vehicles.Supporters This is a public episode. Labor Market Friday's job report will be a very important indicator for how the job market is holding up with inflation concerns and rising interest rates, but today we got the data for the JOLTs report. In May the labor market remained strong as there were still 11.25 million job openings. This far outweighed those counted as unemployed as it stood at 5.95 million people. This means there are still about 1.9 openings per available worker. The quits rate also declined but it still stood at 4.27 million for the month of May. While both data points have fallen from recent record highs, overall, I still believe the labor market remains strong. Due to the strong labor market and no signs of excessive leverage, I believe the recession being discussed will be mild. Employment The employment numbers did not disappoint today, and they provide further evidence for an economy that I believe will be ok. The establishment survey showed payrolls grew 372,000 in the month of June which blew past the estimate of 250,000. The previous 2 months were revised lower by a total of 74,000 jobs, but overall, I would still say it was a good gain. The establishment survey is now just 524,000 jobs lower than pre-pandemic levels and if you look at the private sector it is actually 140,000 payrolls higher than February 2020. The household survey showed unemployed persons now stood at 5.9 million, which is just slightly higher than February 2020 when it was 5.7 million. Two areas that remain troubling are the labor force participation rate and wage inflation. The labor force participation rate still stands at 62.2% which is below the February 2020 rate of 63.4%. Looking at average hourly earnings we saw an increase of 5.4% over the last 12 months, but that is still well below the 8%+ inflation rates we have been seeing. Growth Stocks vs. Value Stocks Numbers are in for the first six months of 2022 and for the first half of the year growth stocks fell 25% compared with value stocks falling 12%. That is a gap of 13% which is the widest in 20 years. I believe the difference in the next six months will be reduced but still expect value to outperform growth stocks. Car Manufacturers Normally going into a recession or a slowdown, American car makers and their stocks get hit pretty hard. So far that appears to be the case with falling stock prices, but if one looks deeper investors should be less concerned this time around. In past recessions car makers were stuck with large inventories of vehicles that they had to discount dramatically to move the inventory. This then caused them to take large losses. That is not the case this time as the demand may not even be met in a slowing environment due to extremely low inventories. Another interesting point is that generally 40% of sales come from buyers with incomes under $50,000 who are hurt the most in a slowdown in the economy. Today that number has fallen to just 25%. It appears that two car manufacturers in the US could be drastically underpriced. Pfizer Vaccine I am pro-business and believe in letting market forces work, but I'm very disappointed with Pfizer‘s handling of the Covid vaccination. I'm not talking about the effectiveness or non-effectiveness. I'm talking about how they just raised their price to the US government by 27%. I think it is a shame that they would take advantage of not just the US government but also taxpayers who are paying for this. I'm also disappointed that the administration did not fight this and tell Pfizer the 27% increase is not justified. And don't forget how they have increased vaccinations all the way down to six-month-old babies which I think is uncalled for based on the minimal risk that kids face from Covid. S&P 500 Even with the major selloff we have seen this year, I still have concerns about the S&P 500. The top 5 companies still make up close to 22% of the entire index. Those companies are Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), Amazon (AMZN), Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL), and Tesla (TSLA). The major problem here is all these companies remain expensive as the average forward P/E for the group is over 30x. I also worry about the growth expectations for these companies. With Apple in particular I believe they are one bad iPhone cycle away from a major pullback in their stock. People like to ignore the fact the iPhone sales still make up over half of the company's revenue and if you add Mac sales to that those products account for about 60% of total sales. They have other areas of growth, but a decline in these product sales would outweigh the growth in other areas. I've questioned it before, but other than a nicer camera are the new iPhones really that much different? Could this be the year iPhone sales take a hit? Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said on a recent earnings call that he expected smartphone unit volume to decline by around 5% versus last year. Analysts were expecting growth around 5%. And yes, Apple is a customer of Micron. Be careful of these companies that still remain expensive, especially with many other great opportunities now available in the market. When it comes to cars, what happens in California doesn't stay in California. In fact, the most populated state in the US has a history of affecting changes in car culture and trends around the rest of the country (if not the world!) We speak to CA residents in person during this live recording of Talking Cars from the LA Auto Show, and discuss how issues like emissions regulations, fuel economy legislation, and alternative fuel adoption began here, and have had an impact around the rest of the world. ----------------------------------- Have a question for our experts?
