Creating Culture, Connection & Change for Teams How important is company culture in a productive workplace and what steps can you take to promote a healthy company culture? Our world has experienced and undergone times of transformational change that requires all of us to step outside of our past routines, look within and identify deep and meaningful ways to evolve and grow within the new corporate normal that stands before us. Melissa Lopez stepped in as CEO of Positive Adventures in February 2020, less than a month before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down much of the world and created an incredible challenge for Positive Adventures (as a team-building and group-based experiential education company) to survive. With her background expertise in both the digital space as well as her executive leadership skills, Melissa was able to successfully pivot the company's team building programs into the virtual space, and within less than two months, Positive Adventures was successfully offering virtual team building and training programs on a global basis to corporations and schools that were struggling with the challenges of remote-based teams and groups successfully connecting and effectively communicating with one another, as well as maintaining cultural integrity within the organizations. Our episode on #PoisedforExit today will inspire any listener, regardless of whether you own a business. Melissa Johnston, a long time business banking executive, tells the story of how she made the leap from being a loyal, job-loving employee to co-founding a bank holding company. Melissa grew up on a farm in southern Minnesota with a love for math. She pursued a degree in Math, and found she loved the finance classes she took, then added an emphasis in Economics. All of this generated an interest in working in the banking industry; she's been a banker ever since. During the pandemic she took the opportunity to read some books. One of them changed her life forever. The book called "Untamed" by Glennon Doyle, really challenged her to look introspectively on what she was capable of doing in her life as compared to what she was currently doing. She realized she had a lot more to do and offer the world, beyond her role as a banker, and desired to take more risks that would stretch her capabilities and make more impact in the world. She met her current partners prior to reading the book and decided it was worth taking their previous conversation further. Fast forward, she is now a co-founder of Entrepreneurs Bancshares, Inc, which is a holding company for the bank they anticipate launching in early 2022. Launching a bank, obtaining a Charter and everything that goes with it has been more daunting than she ever imagined. But, if you knew what you were getting yourself into when you decided to open your own business, would you have done it? Many of us might say 'no' to that question and she did too. Yet, she knows that the massive effort will be worth it.Entrepreneurs Bancshares, Inc plans to cater to small-medium size privately held businesses. Their vision is to build lasting relationships that take in the whole picture of the business; becoming trusted advisers and not just bankers. Many banks only focus on what pertains to them as lender and banker to the owner, but this bank plans to expand the knowledge they have about the customer, so they understand more about the work they do, and can anticipate their needs in advance. Being proactive in today's world is essential and Entrepreneurs Bancshares understands that, so they plan to hire people with the same  mindset. It's all about relationships, according to Melissa. We wish Melissa, her partners and her entire team the best of success! For more on her exciting journey, listen to the episode here.Find Melissa here and find Julie here. Thank you to our Sponsors! The company's founder, Joel Spira, in 1959, invented the first solid state lighting dimmer that could replace a light switch in a standard residential wallbox. That invention now resides in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC, due in part to the efforts and enthusiasm that today's guest has brought to her various communications roles at Lutron over the past 23 years. Mr. Spira is no longer with us, but today's Lutron engineers and business leaders continue to evolve and innovate, and Melissa Andresko plays a key role in promoting the company's accomplishments as they happen, often linking the company's past with its present. Welcome back to an all-new season of We Are The Stigma!! Melissa & Cody kick off this season with the best-selling Canadian Author, Elaine Alec, and it gets beautifully powerful!! Elaine Alec (she/her) is an author, political advisor, women’s advocate, and spiritual thought leader, and teacher and is a direct descendant of hereditary chiefs, Pelkamulaxw and Soorimpt. The trio discusses the power of self-love, recovery from addiction, healing your trauma wounds, the idea of cultivating safe spaces, and what it’s like to chase your dreams. Though the most educational and eye-opening part of this interview is when we learn of #MMIWG -Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls, who have become victims of what is known as The Highway of Tears. Melissa & Cody left this conversation with a deeper understanding of their privilege, with this knowledge of a very real - and very dark - reality of the genocide of indigenous peoples that is still happening today.  However, their hearts on fire knowing beautiful souls are doing real work in a world that, at times, can feel seemingly hopeless. Melissa's website is www.fullcirclepelvichealth.com Did you know that pelvic floor health is vital for our urinary health, all over balance and so much more? As a women's health advocate for over 30 years and a board certified women's health clinical specialist, Melissa has been helping women of all ages from menses to menopause and beyond manage their pelvic health, recover from childbirth or surgery and regain bladder/bowel control while they get back to their optimal level of fitness/function. Her obsession with women's health began when she taught her first exercise class for women at 18 years old. Years later, during her 1st pregnancy, she experienced her own pelvic health issues. Back then, it felt like she was navigating a stormy ocean with a sailboat, completely alone with no one really knowing how to help. It took over 2 years to recover fully. With her second baby, childbirth was not so good to her pelvic floor. She realized that she was in the same boat with an even more difficult recovery ahead. Gratefully, she learned about women's physical therapy and became whole again. Immediately, she vowed to advocate for pelvic health. An autobiographical essay on solitude, walking, the natural world, and emotions by the novelist and nature writer Melissa Harrison. Melissa reflects on what solitude has meant to her - and to others - from her childhood and early adult years to the recent period of lockdown in the summer of 2020. Recorded outside in the Suffolk countryside, this essay explores Melissa's feelings about living on her own and how she finds her most honest self through solitude in nature. She also reflects on what is has meant for women to be on their own in the past and the present. Today on the show Jodi interviews Melissa Anzman, author of The Employee Experience Solution (2020). Here are some highlights from their conversation: Jodi and Melissa talked about how Melissa had the idea for this book in her head for a long time and believed the message she wants to share belongs in a book. She previously published two other books that sell well at speaking engagements, so she realized having a book on the same topic that she speaks about would be smart. Melissa calls herself a “pantster” (as in, someone who likes to write without an outline or plan), so she disliked the idea of outlining. She loved writing certain sections of the book and admitted that, while working from an outline sometimes made writing feel more like an obligation than a creative outlet, the end result was so much better. Though she just released the book a couple weeks ago, Melissa shared that she’s excited about the networking and community the book has opened up for her already. She’s also leveraged a light upsell (a $97 product) and earned more speaking opportunities. Melissa shared some advice for aspiring author-entrepreneurs from both a tactical and a strategic standpoint. Tactically, she advised to make a deadline and honor it, which often means finding someone (an editor, a writing partner, a friend) to hold you accountable. Strategically, Melissa encouraged others to be sure their book topic dovetails with what you want to be known for. A book is an easy way for people to learn about you and your ideas, so it should fit into your “business toolkit.” Melissa also encouraged other author-entrepreneurs to remember that a book is a long game when it comes to marketing. Also: She doesn’t recommend launching a book while traveling. Because she co-owns a book review website, Melissa regularly reads six to eight books a week and can’t pick a favorite. For business, she rereads Essentialism by Greg McKeown every year. Listen here or on your favorite podcast player, and let me know what you think! When Melissa Fabello talks, sex is bound to come up. It’s her job. As a sexuality scholar and body acceptance activist, Melissa sees so clearly that diet culture, body image, and sexuality intersect in ways that contribute to bodies experiencing oppression. One example is the lack of permission to bring our body pleasure and enjoy our sexual selves. From our basic human need to experience touch as a form of connection, to getting a nice massage, to the “Big O” when we struggle with our body image we are also likely to struggle with allowing ourselves to express desires and to feel pleasure through our bodies. This is not a chat about “here’s what you need to do to have a normal sex life.” In fact, Melissa offers a very interesting answer to this reader question at the end of the show. This conversation will help you understand that girls and women aren’t allowed to experience sexuality in positive ways and that impacts our body image. We discuss the “power dynamics” of subject vs object in our society and, perhaps more important, how you can have a conversation with your partner (or yourself!) in a safe, kind way that can help you grow your body confidence with your clothes on and clothes off. --- Get to know Melissa Melissa A. Fabello is a feminist writer, sexuality scholar, and body acceptance activist whose work focuses on the intersection of sexuality and eating disorders, striving toward eliminating size stigma, and bringing a more radical lens to the mainstream body positivity conversation. She currently works as the Managing Editor of Everyday Feminism, the largest independent feminist media site in the world with an audience of several million. She is also a doctoral candidate in Human Sexuality Studies at Widener University, where her research focus is how women with anorexia nervosa make meaning of their experiences with sensuality.
