WBS: Happy Pride. #365 -- The gang is at it again. Brimstone is joined by his wing-man Alex DaPonte as they chat about the car humper from My Strange Addiction, and how he is now sleeping with a different vehicle, how a famous dog from social media was stolen, and then sold to a restaurant for meat. They chat about it being Pride Month, George Lucas' new museum opening in LA, and how the Mandolorian and Grogu was not too impressed. They discuss the Pride flag changing over the years, John Lithgow winning the Best Actor Award at 80 and how a huge overhaul is coming to Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress. Brim explains what gets Within Brim's Skin.

This week, we're spending time with Melvin James Kaminsky, better known to the universe as comedy icon and director Mel Brooks! After lampooning westerns, monster movies, and world history, Brooks turned his signature sense of humor to the cinematic sci-fi outings of Star Wars, Alien, 2001, and Planet of the Apes. With an all-star cast including Rick Moranis, John Candy, Joan Rivers, Bill Pullman, and Daphne Zuniga, the film was born from a gentleman's agreement between Brooks and Star Wars creator George Lucas. In return for certain concessions (rule number one: no merchandising) from Brooks, Lucas agreed to handle some of the more technical aspects of the film through his special effects company, Industrial Light & Magic. The result was a cult hit, almost as beloved as the properties it parodies. With a long-promised sequel finally on the way in 2027 (colon The New One, not colon The Search for More Money), we're visiting a galaxy very, very, very, very far away to see if the Schwartz is still with Spaceballs!   For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com    You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Cathy and Todd continue their summer blockbusters series with Raiders of the Lost Ark, the George Lucas and Steven Spielberg collaboration born from a beach conversation in Hawaii, diving into the film’s origins, iconic casting (Tom Selleck almost got the role), and the chaotic Tunisia shoot where nearly the entire cast and crew got food poisoning. They rank history’s oddest movie titles, wrestle with the film’s deeply uncomfortable Marion subplot, and close out with why Raiders still holds up as a masterclass in humble heroism and why Indy wins in the end by simply closing his eyes.

It's hard to believe it's been so long since the last Star Wars movie hit theatres. After years of announcements, failed projects, and even a change in leadership at Lucasfilm, the first movie in nearly a decade is a follow-up to the first ever live action Star Wars show. Maybe that's fitting for a new era, under new management. The film itself is a fast paced, action-packed, adventure that hails back to the old serials that George Lucas loved. While it is certainly a fun time at the movies, with exciting set-pieces, characters inclusions from across the lore, all of which set on planets with diverse biomes (i.e. some of the things Star Wars does best). Unfortunately, the movie lacks compelling stakes, character depth (where's Din's arc?), much of any plot to speak of, or even a sense of real "importance" - and while that may be a bit intangible, it prompts the question: why was THIS movie the first to bring Star Wars back to feature films in almost a decade? Julian and Rachel try to answer that question and dive deep into all the nerdy details.

150 David Dozoretz - Pre-vis Pioneer, VFX Supervisor and Director

The Filmumentaries Podcast

In this episode I chat with visual effects supervisor, second unit director and digital pre-visualisation pioneer David Dozoretz about a career that traces the entire arc of how modern filmmaking shifted from analogue to digital — and how, somewhere in the middle of that shift, pre-vis went from a curious side experiment to a fundamental part of how films get planned and shot. David talks about growing up in Phoenix, falling in love with cinema the day his sister snuck him into the projection booth at the Cine Capri during The Empire Strikes Back asteroid sequence, and how a chance encounter with a Lucasfilm coffee-table book in a university bookstore set him on the path to ILM. He arrived at ILM in 1991 as an intern, became known as "the computer nerd in the art department and the art nerd in the computer department," and ended up bridging the gap between the two as digital began to take over.We get into his first feature — the original Jurassic Park — his year-long apprenticeship in the legendary ILM art department alongside Doug Chiang, Ty Ellingson, Harley Jessup, Mark Moore and Stefan Dechant, and the time he had to split a $1,400 piece of 3D software into two $700 purchase orders to get round ILM's general-manager sign-off threshold. It's a small story but it tells you everything about the era — digital tools were arriving faster than the institutions running things knew what to do with them.A big part of the conversation focuses on the early years of digital pre-visualisation. David did the first major digital previs sequence in mainstream cinema — the train and helicopter sequence in Brian De Palma's Mission: Impossible, the work John Knoll asked him to do that's now credited as one of the reasons the sequence got greenlit. From there he went on to spend four years working with George Lucas on The Phantom Menace, building the entire pod race in previs (a 25-minute version that almost no one has ever seen got whittled down to the 9-and-a-half-minute final), establishing his now-famous three rules of previs (no textures, no motion blur, no shadows) and then immediately having to break all three of them to convey the sense of speed and floating in the pod race itself. There are some lovely George Lucas stories too, including the time George walked into the editing room and reacted to David's droid-factory post-vis with "honestly, I was a little worried about that one — looks like it's gonna work," and the moment when George trailed off mid-sentence trying to describe a desert landscape and David — a 21-year-old kid — finished the thought with "John Ford?", which David thinks is the moment Lucas decided he could trust him. Later in the conversation we move into David's own company, Persistence of Vision, and his work on Titan A.E., Behind Enemy Lines, JJ Abrams' Mission: Impossible III, the 2009 Star Trek reboot (including the previs realisation that Vulcan being orange meant the costumes — originally designed to evoke 70s NASA — had to be completely redesigned) and Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D, where David served as second unit director on the first digital stereoscopic film and the production was effectively beta-testing the cameras Jim Cameron was building for Avatar. We finish on Zafari, David's 52-episode children's animated series rendered almost entirely in Unreal Engine — one of the earliest large-scale uses of real-time rendering in mainstream animation, which saved 30% of the production budget — and on a wider conversation about AI, the future of filmmaking, the importance of human authenticity, and David's lovely closing thought: study the art and history of cinema, study the drawing, not just the pencil. The tools will keep changing. The language won't. The Kibbe and Friends crew is back with another automotive movie deep dive, this time connecting the dots between American Graffiti, Dazed and Confused, and the entire cruising culture that shaped generations of car people. Rob, Corndog, and Bernie dig into why American Graffiti still works over 50 years later, from the unforgettable cars and soundtrack to the feeling of freedom and youth that George Lucas somehow bottled perfectly on film. Along the way, the guys break down the similarities between John Milner and Wooderson, revisit some of the greatest cruising scenes ever put on screen, and reflect on why movies like these continue to resonate with anyone who grew up around cars, parking lots, drive-ins, and late-night bench racing with friends. There's also plenty of the usual K&F chaos mixed in with movie trivia, George Lucas facts, Days of Thunder references, and more random automotive pop culture rabbit trails than should probably fit into one episode. If you've ever spent a summer night cruising with nowhere to go, this episode is going to feel familiar in all the best ways. This episode opens with the usual comfortable chaos: a fumbled intro that Daniel immediately clocks as "off-syncopation," a brief tribute to a listener-written birthday song that threads back to Daniel's old World of Warcraft podcast, and the unexpected reappearance of former co-host Jean in his inbox ahead of an Orlando conference visit. From there the show settles into personal-journal mode — Adam's Mother's Day recap features a chocolate pie that survived a second-degree burn from a saucepan handle (the second week running that a metal object has wronged him), while a side discussion of the TV show The Pitt leads Daniel into a candid, sobering reflection on his mother's Alzheimer's and what he's already told his partner Zach to do if the same thing ever happens to him.The show's recurring segments land in the second half. The Contact segment surfaces a voicemail from loyal listener Tony in Illinois and a text reporting the death of Jason Collins, the first openly gay NBA player. The News Game has Daniel going 4-for-5 on the New York Times quiz — correctly nailing YMCA as Trump's Beijing banquet song and the mid-2010s as the start of declining student test scores — before snagging a bonus point in the Disney Trivial Pursuit lightning round by pulling "Edgar Bergen" out of thin air under the wire. Celebrity Birthdays covered George Lucas (82, fresh museum at Skywalker Ranch) and Stevie Wonder (76), with the segment capping on Stephen Colbert's impending final week, which prompts a recommendation to seek out his recent David Letterman interview on YouTube. The back third weaves in a tech segment on OpenAI's Codex Desktop: Daniel is an enthusiastic evangelist, citing his own custom Linux clock widget as a proof-of-concept, while Adam has hit a permissions wall trying to automate his podcast show-prep workflow on Mac. A sidebar on the Little Fatty Cast and its chronic audio ducking problem rounds out the runtime before a deliberately early wrap — the hosts are actively trying to trim episode length, partly, Daniel deadpans, so as not to cannibalize Tony's Level 13 after-show content.Email: Contact@MixMinusPodcast.comVoice/SMS: 707-613-3284

It's a strange life. Cybernetics, genetics, lasers and all those things... I guess I'll never understand any of that stuff. This week on Film Junk we're looking back at the directorial debut of one Mr. George Lucas, a dystopian sci-fi thriller that feels like it should have a much bigger cult following than it does. THX 1138 was ahead of its time in many ways and still looks visually stunning today. Was this movie simply too bleak for the masses? Does it feel like it was directed by the same guy who made Star Wars? Are the Special Edition changes a problem? Do we all want to live in a future with personal masturbation machines? Take your sedation, buy and be happy with this week's Film Junk Podcast.

Bring Me The Axe! Horror Podcast

On the podcast no one can hear you scream. This week we're taking a look at the horror movie hingepoint in 1979, Alien. Before Star Wars there wasn't a studio on earth that wanted to make an expensive science fiction movie and after Star Wars they couldn't find enough scripts to get expensive science fiction movies into production. Alien was one of the first ones to come out of the gate that wasn't a cheap ripoff of George Lucas's masterpiece. It was worlds apart from the recent space movie hits. It featured no highly competent astronauts traveling to Jupiter and no dashing heroes in star fighters, wielding light sabers. Instead, Ridley Scott delivered a quiet, slow-moving horror movie featuring blue collar characters just trying to get by on a commercial tow vessel. At the same time, they delivered one of the most suspenseful horror movies with one of the strongest casts and one of the most iconic monster designs by world-class artists. It is truly one of the greatest horror movies of all time. Alien sees the crew of the Nostromo rerouted to a planet nearby where a crashed alien vessel sends out a radio signal that they interpret as a distress call. By the time the ship's computer figures out that it's not a distress call but a warning it's too late and the ship's XO finds himself with a horrifying alien creature stuck to his face, laying its egg inside him. When the egg hatches by exploding out of his chest it unleashes the perfect killing machine, a biomechanical alien that stalks the ship's crew and kills them off one by one. A Note from James:Today on The James Altucher Show, I'm excited to welcome back one of my favorite guests, David Epstein.David is the bestselling author of Range, which completely changed how I think about my own jack-of-all-trades life. In his new book, Inside the Box: How Constraints Make Us Better, David flips the usual idea of creativity on its head. We're always told that creativity comes from total freedom: the blank page, the blank canvas, unlimited resources. But David shows that the opposite is often true. Constraints can make us more creative, more focused, and better at solving problems. We talk about why General Magic had unlimited talent and money but still fell apart, while Pixar thrived by using strict story rules. We talk about Dr. Seuss writing Green Eggs and Ham with only 50 words, Bach boxing himself into fugues, Duke Ellington working inside the limits of early recording technology, and how the periodic table came out of a textbook deadline. This conversation gave me a new way to think about my own writing, podcasting, and creative process. So if you ever feel stuck, blocked, or overwhelmed by too many options, this episode is for you.Episode Description:James talks with David Epstein about a counterintuitive idea: creativity often improves when freedom is limited. David's new book, Inside the Box: How Constraints Make Us Better, argues that blank-slate freedom can push people toward obvious, repetitive solutions, while the right constraints force the brain to search for something new.The conversation moves across business, science, music, writing, sports, and education. David explains why General Magic had nearly unlimited resources and still failed to build a useful product, why Pixar's storytelling rules helped it create hit after hit, and why Dr. Seuss became more original by writing inside strict word limits. James connects the idea to writing, podcasting, public speaking, genre fiction, and the hero's journey. What makes the episode useful is that it gives creators and learners a practical reframe. If you're stuck, the answer may not be more freedom. It may be a better box. What You'll Learn:Why total freedom often leads to less original work. How constraints force creativity by blocking the most convenient solution. Why Pixar succeeded with storytelling rules while General Magic struggled with too much freedom. How Dr. Seuss used strict word limits to transform children's books. Why Bach, Duke Ellington, jazz, genre fiction, and the hero's journey all show the creative power of structure. How to use specific questions, projects, and “brain first, tool second” learning to improve creativity and education. Why later specialization can produce better long-term results than picking a lane too early.Timestamped Chapters:[02:00] Why blocking the easiest solution can spark creativity[02:49] A Note from James: David Epstein returns[04:09] Remembering in-person interviews vs. Zoom interviews[04:23] Memory, mnemonics, and what we forget over time[06:34] How Range helped James rethink being a generalist[08:23] The core idea of Inside the Box[09:07] Why the blank slate often fails[10:01] General Magic and the problem of too much freedom[12:05] Pixar as the opposite model[13:17] The three-pitches rule and small-team story development[14:21] The hero's journey as a storytelling constraint[15:25] George Lucas, Neil Gaiman, and inherited story structures[16:19] How David structured Inside the Box[17:06] The real story behind the periodic table[18:00] Why the Mendeleev dream story is probably false[19:09] Bach, Duke Ellington, and musical constraint[20:12] Bach as a “constraint zealot”[21:43] Dr. Seuss and the word-limit breakthrough[23:13] Beginner Books and the rules that changed children's literature[25:20] Practical constraints for writers, painters, and creators[25:45] Specific curiosity and idea linking[27:41] How David uses a master thought list[29:45] How specific questions powered David's earlier books[31:00] Roger Federer, Tiger Woods, and delayed specialization[33:00] Why generalists often win later[34:01] Why chess and golf are poor models for most learning[36:31] How parents can use constraints to help kids learn[37:15] The constraints-led approach to coaching[38:30] Swim coaching and letting learners find their own solution[39:15] Teaching astronomy through specific projects[40:37] The generation effect: why guessing improves learning[42:00] “Brain first, tool second” in the age of AI[43:26] Why developing brains benefit from analog difficulty[44:18] Early specialization in the UK vs. broader sampling[45:00] Why later specializers can win long-term[46:21] James on applying constraints to writing and podcasting[47:32] Jazz, grammar, and improvisation inside limits[48:01] Genre fiction and creativity within rules[49:21] Why originality became linked to total freedom[50:14] Communicating with an audience through familiar forms[51:13] Stoner, plot, and literary constraint[53:04] James suggests a constraints workbook[54:24] Writing on the subway and using life's limits[55:04] Closing thoughts on Inside the BoxAdditional Resources:David Epstein's official websiteInside the Box: How Constraints Make Us Better official book pageInside the Box on AmazonRange: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World official book pageRange on AmazonDavid Epstein's Range Widely newsletter. In this episode of The Jonathan Wier Show, Jonathan and co-host Cody Akins tackle the upcoming NFL schedule release (Thursday, May 14th at 7 PM CT) and debate which team they want the Chiefs to open against. Cody wants the Jets for an easy motivational win, but Jonathan argues for the Seahawks — repossess their banner on banner night and give Kenneth Walker his revenge game. The conversation pivots to a bigger problem: the NFL is becoming the world's biggest mall. With games now scattered across Netflix, Peacock, Prime, Paramount+, YouTube, and Netflix again, Jonathan argues the league is sacrificing its big-box-store accessibility for greed. He doesn't mind games on different days — but the fragmentation across paid services is going to cost them casual fans. The guys then debate the Star Fox 64 remake for Switch 2. Cody is genuinely excited (and hopeful it signals an Ocarina of Time remake for Zelda's 40th anniversary). Jonathan sees it as another nostalgia trap — Nintendo knows aging millennials will buy it no matter how much they complain, the same playbook George Lucas ran with the Star Wars Special Editions in the '90s. They close on tech policy: Utah trying to ban VPNs (unenforceable and ignores how cellular IPs work), and Meta rolling out AI age verification because kids are bypassing checks with mustaches, hats, haircuts, and makeup. Jonathan's takeaway — parents need to stop delegating parenting to the government. Talk to your kids. Block sites on your router. Do the work.

The calendar has flipped to a new month, but it's not just any month. After six-and-a-half years, this month will finally see the return of Star Wars to movie theaters with The Mandalorian and Grogu. We're bracing ourselves for all the action by fueling up with fast food tie-ins, soaking up poster art, and breaking down Jon Favreau interviews.  We say farewell to the legendary Star Wars Insider Magazine as its final issue is now appearing in subscribers' mailboxes, we compare Ezra Bridger's and Devon Izara's similarities and differences, and wonder if the current creators of Star Wars are leaning on George Lucas's influences too much.  Plus, will Gina Carano return to Star Wars? And, somehow…Oscar Isaac has returned.
