Annegret is a German American fiber artist who divides her time between Chapel Hill, a university town, and Kill Devil Hills, a town on the North Atlantic coast. Born in Germany and now residing in North Carolina, she lived in Ghana, France, Great Britain, and Australia before moving to the United States in 2001. Together with travels to countries as varied as Italy and India, these different cultural frameworks have shaped both her life and her art. The shores of the Albemarle Sound, near Kill Devil Hills on North Carolina's Outer Banks, have become the inspiration for her recent work which explores the fragile ecosystems of the seaboard, where the impacts of global warming, human expansion, and nature's resilience create a beautiful albeit precarious environment. Both the colors of the seashore and the use of earth pigments shape her palette, and photography serves as visual inspiration. Her journey as an artist started almost thirty years ago as a traditional, self-taught quilter. After taking numerous in-person and online workshops, she decided that it was necessary to acquire a more formal education. Between 2018 and 2020, she completed an advanced (Level 4) City and Guild accredited course with the School of Stitched Textiles, followed by its two-year Master Practitioner Course which emphasized design skills and artistic development. She is active in the Studio Art Quilts Associates – both in the European and Middle Eastern region and the one covering North Carolina and Virginia. Benjamin talks about dynamics in the band, creative process and routine, the healing properties of music and more.

Recently we spent two nights in the Sahara desert.  The desert is so mystical and vast that you feel ill-equipped to tie your mind around its endless borders and landscapes. So much of the desert fascinates.  Of course, we saw camels, real mirages, and sand.  What bent our minds were the thousands of other living things we saw in the desert – trees, grass, flowers, rare rocks, water, and people. We walked and watched an entire desert ecosystem quietly and subtly teeming; emerging then disappearing. Much of my faith background was informed and built around the experiences of people within desert settings whose metaphors have peppered my training and instruction.  What I actually saw with my eyes was something different. Owning a business is lonely.  You cannot (or probably should not) share everything, explain everything, or anticipate everything. Decisions are made of which may never feel reasonable.   A typical day may be spent with an owner's mind racing inefficiently from cash flow to employees, insurance to payroll, or receivables to project scheduling.  The end of the day is a scramble to find a short window of numbness to escape before the mind machine churns along.   And then there is life to think about. It is important to understand that there are varieties of loneliness and not all are poisonous.   German-American philosopher Paul Tillich helps us understand the subtly between the loneliness of isolation in contrast to the loneliness of solitude saying, “(Isolation) expresses the pain of being alone, and solitude expresses the glory of being alone" The first thing a lonely owner must identify is what desert of loneliness they find themselves in. As we walked through the desert and rode camels through the desert there was an ironic peace, almost a draw to stay.  There was a sense where I had just a shard of understanding as to how entire civilizations could both live and embrace life in the desert – it was quiet, calm, with limited distractions, and vast views for the mind to have space to think long and exponential thoughts.  There was space that was not available in my office, or around our conference table. The loneliness we feel may be the very loneliness that is needed through the healing salve of healthy solitude.  Sherry Turkle says, “(Solitude) is the time you become familiar and comfortable with yourself...Without solitude, we cannot construct a stable sense of self.” (Turkle pg.. 61) The human spirit NEEDS healthy alone time.  Time to unravel the crust and calcified lies we tell ourselves in the hurried distraction of a noisy day. Pablo Picasso said, “Without great solitude, no serious work is possible”.  Action and reaction may very well be the enemy of healthy solitude and will stunt the joy of healthy solitude. Isolation is the painful dark side of loneliness and can be manifested by a deep, enduring feeling of hopelessness.  Community will usually be needed for isolation but ill-equipped to receive if honesty and vulnerability are not included.  Community requires vulnerability over transparency and they are different. Lewis Wright articulates, “Transparency is an openness for observation, but not connection. You let folks know how you're doing, but keep them at arm's length so they can't affect you. Alternatively, vulnerability not only allows for observation, but intentionally opens up for connection (community).” The second way to combat loneliness is through connection and vulnerability with a person you trust and think wise.  Darren Hardy said, “Never ask for advice of someone with whom you wouldn't want to trade places.” The solution to isolation is not more isolation.  Embrace solitude in order to bring out your best thoughts, ideas, and insights. Hedge from isolation as an owner by connecting with a community of other owners. Send us a textHello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom!  Happy New Year everyone.  This is the first episode for our 2025 season!Today I want to introduce Emma Bentzen Koehler.  Emma Bentzen Koehler, was an entrepreneur and president of the San Antonio Brewing Association, was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on February 25, 1858 to her parents, Ulrich Friedrich Wilhelm Bentzen and Helene Henriette Sophie (Garrels) Bentzen.  Her parents emigrated from Hanover Germany to St. Louis during the late 1830s. Her mother died in 1860 from heart disease at the age of 48.  Her father would go on to marry Marianna Bertha Wiebe in 1862. During her childhood in St. Louis, she and her siblings participated in German-American cultural events and associations, including the turnverein movement. A Turnverein is a gymnastic or athletic club that originated in Germany in 1811. We cover van der Rohe's role in the Bauhaus movement, his difficulties with the Nazis, his escape from Germany, and his career in Chicago. Then, Dirk relates his memories of WWII in Germany and his cooperation with his grandfather on post-war buildings, including the New National Gallery in West Berlin as well as the IBM building and the Federal Center in Chicago. After a discussion about Helmut Jahn, another great German-American architect, Rolf and Dirk conclude with a heartfelt thank you to the people of Chicago for their generosity and kindness in accepting German immigrants throughout the years. In the second part of our conversation we delve into what a second Trump term will potentially mean for civil liberties in the United States and have a in-depth discussion about Trump's mass deportations plans for undocumented migrant/illegal immigrants. Back in August, Patrick wrote a piece for The Bulwark entitled "Trump Could Do a Mass Deportation. We've Done It Before.". We delve into the history of mass deportation plans than have been done in the past with a focus on Eisenhower as well as the crackdowns on German Americans during World War I. We'll also mention issues related to the internment camps of WWII and how they not only targeted Japanese American, but also German- and Italian Americans. Patrick will help us delve into the Alien Enemy Act which has been cited by Trump and his advisers already. Additionally, Patrick will comment on Kentucky Senator Rand Paul's criticisms of Trump wanting to use the U.S. military for mass deportations. Also discussed in the course of this conversation is neo-McCarthyism and the China Initiative of the first Trump Presidency, threats to civil liberties in a second Trump term, the expansion of Presidential/Executive Branch powers over the years and its consequences, the January 6th insurrection/riots, and much, much more.

Diversity has often been seen as the United States' defining strength – but today, some Americans see it as a threat. And this isn't new. When the United States entered World War I in April 1917, suspicion fell on German Americans. Anti-German sentiment led to the prohibition of teaching German in schools, the closure of many German-language newspapers, and persecution for speaking German in public or on the phone.

Introduction Welcome to a new series, “Footprints of History”. The Drawing Board, with whom I am partnering for the 3rd consecutive year, brings this series to you. The Drawing Board is an international architecture competition based in India where students can test their understanding and skills in shaping how communities live and thrive while preserving local heritage. TDB has been actively running an Architecture competition for undergraduate students since 2016. It is conceptualised by Mindspace Architects and Rohan Builders. This year, which is the 9th edition of the competition, the design brief revolves around redesigning the Pathu Thoon Lane in Madurai (Tamil Nadu, India) also known as "10 Pillar Street”. This site is somewhere between the Meenakshi Temple and Thirumalai Nayakar Place. The design challenge is to restore and integrate the lane's cultural heritage, emphasizing these 10 pillars. The submission deadline is 16th September 2024. Hans Brouwer. Hans, originally from Hong Kong, is a distinguished architect with a global footprint. He studied architecture in Switzerland and the University of Southern California, where he graduated top of his class. Hans spent his early career with Sir Norman Foster, contributing to landmark projects like the Century Tower in Tokyo and Commerzbank Headquarters in Frankfurt. In 1995, he founded HB Design, later relocating to Singapore, and expanded to regional offices in Phuket and Bangkok. An award-winning architect, Hans also teaches at the National University of Singapore and frequently speaks at industry events. Questions What do you see when you see the 10 Pillar Street - as an architect and as a tourist or history lover? Which aspects stand out for you? You have a strong emphasis on “the process”. You say this process is truly creative because the end is not known at the beginning. Can you unpack this for us? At HB Design, you emphasize the importance of context and site in shaping architectural outcomes. How do you balance the need for innovation with the preservation of cultural heritage in a project? You deeply engage with clients in the design process, how would you involve a community or stakeholders in a project like the restoration of Madurai's Pathu Thoon Lane? Assuming Designers or specialists are generally aware of the pros and cons of various solutions and living on tradeoffs. Given the expertise, what amount of community involvement is apt - because, if we go and ask people, they will want faster horses while the solution could be inventing a car. I am very curious to know about BIM - What is building information modeling? How does it help in the process and over all practice at HB Design? With BIM being such an integral part of HB Design's process, how do you see technology aiding in the preservation and restoration of culturally significant sites? Brad Kahlhamer is an artist of indigenous descent, adopted by German-American parents. Being a free spirit, a wanderer and a person with unquenchable curiosity, profoundly shaped his multidisciplinary work. Kahlhamer's art often incorporates themes and imagery from indigenous cultures of the Pacific Northwest and Southwest, aiming to modernize traditional forms and present them in a contemporary context. In the early 1990s, he used materials like inner tube rubber for sculptures and later transitioned to oil paintings, characterized by thick layers, song lyrics, and primitive figures. His integration of ledger drawings, viewed by him as America's first graphic novels, is a significant aspect of his work. Growing up in Arizona, Brad enjoyed a childhood filled with freedom and outdoor adventures, which later fueled his creative expression. Music was integral to his early life, and he pursued it alongside visual arts, deeply influenced by differents bands and musical styles from rock, beat and soul to punk. In the early 1980s, Kahlhamer moved to New York to immerse himself in the vibrant art scene. There, he worked at Topps Chewing Gum, where he met Art Spiegelman and became involved in the underground comic scene. Currently, Kahlhamer is working on the Nomadic Studio project, creating a series of 100 Moleskine notebooks filled with drawings and ideas. Kahlhamer's art uniquely fuses his personal history, and a wide array of cultural influences, making it both deeply personal and broadly resonant. His work spans various media, including monumental paintings, intricate sculptures, installations, and drawings, drawing inspiration from cartoons, pop art, graphic novels, indigenous art, and his prolific sketchbooks. Looking at the events this week at Columbia, MIT, NYU, and other elite US schools, they mirror much of the hate, horror and scale of The German American Bund. While some were there to genuinely support the civilians trapped in the ongoing conflict, there were others that openly supported Hamas' extremist actions. It was very ironic to see banners about women and LGBT+ groups support, when they are the most oppressed in the world that these people envision. What's even worse is that there were reasons to suspect that these protests were sponsored by people who don't want to get their own hands dirty. This particularly true with social media sites, who has become the de-facto source of information for the younger generation. There was even a brief period where young people were lauding a speech that Bin Laden made to justify 9/11. Never mind the atrocities he and his jihadist group committed in the US and international stage, he made a great speech! Totally justified. In the spring of 1917 the U.S. moved closer to entering the Great War. German submarines resumed attacks against American ships, and a secret German telegram urging Mexico to wage war on the U.S. came to light, enraging the public. As he prepared to lead the nation into the conflict, President Woodrow Wilson faced daunting challenges. He would have to transform the Army, reshape the economy and crack down on internal dissent. In the 1940s and 50s there was the great American comic book scare. Many serious adults warned that comic books were turning young people into illiterate, criminally violent, sexually deviant political extremists. There were several editorials in newspapers that argued as much. There were groups who organized literal comic book burnings. Local jurisdictions passed laws to limit the sale of comic books. There was even a televised congressional hearing on comic books by the United States Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency. This was a widespread phenomena that can't be laid at the feet of any one person. But there is one person who did more than anyone to legitimize this panic: Dr. Fredric Wertham. He was a well-credentialed German-American psychiatrist best known for his anti-comics book Seduction of the Innocent: The Influence of Comic Books on Today's Youth. The scientific worthlessness of Wertham's theories has been clear to historians of comic books and even some of his contemporaries. However, it wasn't until 2012, three decades after his death, that the full extent of the worthlessness of his anti-comic book work was revealed. After a historian was able to read his raw clinical notes for the first time, it was discovered that many claims in his book Seduction of the Innocent were wholly fabricated. His anti-comic book claims weren't merely the product of sloppy science, but lies and distortions. In this episode, I speak with my colleague, Agnes Mueller, who is a professor of German and Comparative Literature at the University of South Carolina, about why Thomas Mann's novella, Death in Venice, is a must-read during our ongoing pandemic. We talk about Modernism, Plato, and Nietzsche. We see the novella as exploring sickness, death, and eros, and we find similarities and continuities between the lovesickness that grips von Aschenbach and cholera that eventually kills him. We also ask whether Mann's novella is a rebuke of, or perhaps even a vindication of, Plato's ideal of erotic love. Either way, we agree that the novella is a deep engagement with Platonic ideas and is one of the best treatments of love in literature, period. I hope you enjoy our conversation. Agnes Mueller (M.A., LMU Munich, Germany, 1993, Ph.D., Vanderbilt U, 1997), a Professor, is an expert on recent and contemporary German literature. She is core faculty in Comparative Literature and affiliated with Women's and Gender Studies and with Jewish Studies. Her publications are on German-American relations, multicultural studies, gender issues in contemporary literature, German-Jewish studies, and Holocaust studies. Her 2004 anthology German Pop Culture: How “American” Is It? (U of Michigan P) is widely used for teaching and research. In addition to all levels of German language and culture, she regularly teaches advanced undergraduate and graduate classes, and has lectured in Germany, Canada, and the U.S. Her most recently published book is entitled The Inability to Love: Jews, Gender, and America in Recent German Literature now available in German translation as Die Unfaehigkeit zu lieben. She is currently at work on a new project, entitled Holocaust Migration: Jewish Fiction in Today's Germany. In it, she traces the ways in which challenges of living in a multi-ethnic society where past trauma is dispersed are negotiated. Jennifer A. Frey is an associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of South Carolina and fellow of the Institute for Human Ecology at the Catholic University of America. Prior to joining the philosophy faculty at USC, she was a Collegiate Assistant Professor of Humanities at the University of Chicago, where she was a member of the Society of Fellows in the Liberal Arts and an affiliated faculty in the philosophy department.  She earned her Ph.D. in philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh, and her B.A. in Philosophy and Medieval Studies (with Classics minor) at Indiana University-Bloomington.
