I have two guests on this week's Sewers of Paris, both of them connected to a secret society of mutants. JP Karliak is the voice of Morph on X-Men ‘97, among many other roles; and Anthony Oliveira is a writer of many Marvel comics, among many other books. I spoke to them both about why the X-Men hold particular importance for them — part of my research for a new video about the 2000 X-Men films. That video goes live this Sunday, August 31, 2025, and it'll feature excerpts from my conversations with Anthony and JP. But I wanted to make my full conversations with them available for you to listen to here. This week on Casual Nerds, Hollywood served up more drama than an actual script. • Avengers: Doomsday – Rumors say RDJ and Ryan Reynolds went full diva slap-fight, and Marvel's solution was possibly: “Bet, you two don't play together anymore.” • Weapons – Marketed as horror, served as thriller, garnished with awkward laughs. Half the crowd called it movie of the year, the other half wanted refunds. • Stephen King – Turns out childhood trauma makes for a hell of a career move. The Long Walk and The Life of Chuck are next up on the adaptation conveyor belt. • Batman 2 – Robin might get shoved in to make the DCU fit, but we're not buying it. Gunn's vision vs. studio meddling = chaos incoming. • MCU Gossip – Tramell Tillman joins Spider-Man, Florence Pugh might be back with her widow's bite, and Jonathan Majors is apparently still on Marvel's Christmas card list. Well, it's been quite a ride, but all good things, and even all mediocre things, must come to an end. Our four week series on the American Song Contest comes to a close, and it's actually got some decent stuff... and also some regrettable stuff too. But that's the ASC in a nutshell, so we talk ways to improve it if they ever attempt something so fool-hardy again. In this special crossover episode of Men of Steel, we kick off a two-part team-up with the Long Live the Legion podcast! We're diving into “Foundations,” the early 2000s arc from The Legion—with special guests Jim and Jay from LLtL and the artist of the arc himself, Chris Batista! Together, we explore Superman's legacy in the 31st century, the evolving identity of the Legion, and what it was like illustrating this future-forward storyline. Part 2 continues on Long Live the Legion—don't miss it! Overview Case Aiken introduces crossover episode, featuring Jmike Folson, Jim Fetters, Jay McKiernan, and Chris Batista discussing the Legion of Superheroes 'Foundations' arc, celebrating its 45th anniversary. The plot centers on Darkseid snatching people from time to harness dark matter, with the Legion uncovering Superboy during the investigation. DNA (Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning) established as the core writing team; their earlier success with Marvel's cosmic stories enhances credibility. Chris Batista expresses concern over technology portrayal, advocating for a more advanced depiction of the Legion compared to Justice League. The Legion World headquarters is praised for its futuristic elements like replicated home worlds and teleportation gates. Despite rising sales and positive fan response, the series faced cancellation, causing frustration as issue 25 became the second-best selling of the series with a 25% readership increase. Character designs for the Servants of Darkness were mostly created by Chris Batista, with a conscious effort to maintain Kirby's aesthetic. Superboy's dual role as both Legion member and connection to Titans was anticipated, reflecting long-time fan expectations for character involvement. Kid Quantum is recognized as the first female leader of color in the Legion, showcasing character dynamics and development alongside Cosmic Boy. The evolution of Superboy's design aimed to match Teen Titans appearances, highlighting editorial influence on character aesthetics. Notes ️ Podcast Introduction and Setup (00:00 - 02:09) Case Aiken introduces the Men of Steel podcast crossover episode with Long Live the Legion podcast, featuring co-host Jmike Folson and guests Jim Fetters, Jay McKiernan, and artist Chris Batista. Discussion focuses on Legion of Superheroes 'Foundations' arc, specifically issue 25 which serves as both story continuation and 45th anniversary celebration. Chris Batista reveals behind-the-scenes details about working as lead artist on the arc, noting DC doesn't produce this Legion continuity anymore so he can speak freely. Story Overview and Context (02:09 - 09:54) Jmike Folson summarizes the Foundations plot: people being snatched from time by Darkseid to steal dark matter for restarting Apokolips, with Legion discovering Superboy during investigation of warp phantoms. DNA (Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning) established as the writing team, with connections drawn to their later successful Marvel cosmic work including Guardians of the Galaxy. Legion Lost miniseries and Legion Worlds established crucial backstory, with 25 issues of world-building leading to this commemorative arc. ️ Technology and World-Building Discussion (09:54 - 16:05) Chris Batista expresses frustration with Paul Levitz rejecting advanced technology concepts for Legion, arguing they should appear far more advanced than Justice League. Legion World headquarters praised as major advancement - a planet with replicated home worlds and teleportation gates, making Legion feel appropriately futuristic. Discussion of how DNA run embraced technological advancement while previous runs kept Legion at similar tech level to 20th century heroes. Character Design and Development (01:01:03 - 01:24:10) Chris reveals Servants of Darkness designs were largely his creation except for Orion, with specific mentions of including Firestorm, White Martian, Lobo, Green Lantern, and Big Barda. Orion design intentionally modeled after Destroyer from Thor, maintaining Kirby aesthetic while creating intimidating servant appearance. Invisible Kid and Brainiac 5 romantic moment revealed as editor Steve Wacker's spontaneous addition 'just to mess with fans' - became lasting fan discussion point. Publishing History and Cancellation (01:24:16 - 01:59:06) Series cancellation explained as sudden higher-up decision despite rising sales and positive fan response to Superboy addition. Issue 25 was second-best selling of entire series with 25% increase in readership, making cancellation timing particularly frustrating. Original plans included Superboy remaining in both Legion and Titans simultaneously, with extensive story arcs planned for Element Lad return and Lightning Lad separation. Artist Collaboration and Creative Process (20:40 - 01:19:06) Chris describes working relationship with DNA as collaborative, with writers trusting him to design new characters like Legion cadets and including Easter eggs like Kent Shakespeare and Polar Boy. Multiple pencillers used for issue 25 to handle commemorative scope, with each artist assigned specific character groups to avoid overlap. Coloring technology evolution discussed, with modern computer coloring providing more tools but potentially reducing creative necessity of older 64-color process limitations. ⏳ Superman Connection and Time Travel Elements (34:02 - 01:54:06) Clark Kent and 90s Superboy both featured as characters pulled from time, with Clark becoming servant of darkness while Superboy joins Legion. Superboy wears classic costume with Legion belt buckle addition, fulfilling long-time fan expectations while serving story purposes. Time dilation plot involves universe getting smaller and past being erased, though hosts acknowledge the temporal mechanics don't fully make sense. Character Relationships and Dynamics (46:03 - 01:30:24) Mech (Lightning Lord) rehabilitation storyline discussed as more complex than typical villain treatment, showing struggle between evil nature and love for siblings. Kid Quantum established as Legion's first female leader of color, with organic romantic relationship with Cosmic Boy developing throughout arc. Livewire/Element Lad fusion creates extremely powerful character combining lightning abilities with matter transmutation in crystalline body. Technical and Production Details (01:36:23 - 01:51:38) Secret Files issue placement in continuity questioned due to timeline inconsistencies with main story events. Chris notes Superboy's physical design evolution throughout arc as editorial mandated size increases to match Teen Titans appearance. Force field technology and advanced Legion equipment discussed as properly futuristic elements that should distinguish team from contemporary heroes.

The world is getting less funny. Not just out there in the geopolitical hellscape of every day life, but at the movie theater as well. While comedy films once dominated the box office, in recent years there's been a sharp drop-off in theatrical comedies. The communal experience of sitting in a room with people and sharing one of the most fundamental human emotions has quietly evaporated, and been replaced by vague joke-shaped gestures at humor in your average Marvel movie. That all might be about to change thanks to the whopping success of the new Naked Gun movie. The brilliantly-stupid, unabashed comedy is a canary in the coal mine, proving that audiences still want to get together and laugh in a dark room together. This week, Adam talks with The Naked Gun writers, Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, about movies, comedy, and comedy movies. Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesTrammell Tillman, the break-out star of Severance who plays Seth Milchick on the Apple+ show, will be part of the Spider-Man: Brand New Day cast. Variety got the scoop on the Emmy-nominated actor joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but no details on who he's playing were announced. Move over Marvel and DC…Archie is here to take us by storm? In an interesting move from filmmakers Phil Lord and Chritopher Miller, Universal is fronting an Archie adaptation for the big screen. Comics legend Tom King is writing the screenplay and former 20th Century Studios President of Production Emma Watts is producing. King made the leap from page to screen recently in the DCU, penning Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow and the Lanterns series, but is well-known for his comics in Marvel, DC, and beyond. The CW show Riverdale adapted the Archie comics in its own unique way and plot details for this film are unknown. Universal also produced a version of the Archie characters in Josie and the Pussycats in 2001. Though we sing the praises for AppleTV+ loudly and frequently on this show, we've also often touted it as being one of the more inexpensive streaming services. Alas, all good things come to an end, as the streamer announced its cost jumped from $9.99 to $12.99 effective August 21. The annual rate of $99.99 has not changed yet. As of now, AppleTV+ stands alone as the only streamer that doesn't have an ad-supported option. Dafne Keen and Saara Chaudry have joined the third season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. For the first time in a long time, Gobbledygeek dips its beak back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They've done so for a very special film: Jake Schreier's Thunderbolts*, a return to the MCU's past glories with a tale of outcasts looking for something to believe in. Yelena Belova, the Winter Soldier, U.S. Agent, Red Guardian, Ghost, and Taskmaster come together to form a new kind of Avengers team; one formed under the auspices of none other than Elaine Benes. Paul, Arlo, and Eric–our own band of lovable misfits–discuss Florence Pugh's killer performance, the lovable David Harbour, what Thunderbolts* does differently than most recent MCU films, and much, much more. NEXT: we enter VAL-halla for a second Val Kilmer double feature. This time, it's 1986's Tony Scott pro-war classic Top Gun and 1988's Ron Howard (???) Lord of the Rings rip-off, Willow. Welcome to Episode 221. We are looking at the Fantastic Four: First Steps. It is the 37th film of the MCU. This is the 1st film of Phase Six. 1960s vibes held in a parallel universe, Earth-828. This is not the primary one, which is MCU Earth-199999. After the Fox debacle, this is the F4s introduction to the multiverse and the MCU. We have fun reviewing this film as we wind down summer. Disney Turned All Their Boy Brands Into Girl Brands and Doesn’t Know How To Fix Them This week on the podcast, Alien: Earth episode 3, and how Disney got rid of half the audience of their acquired brands (Marvel and Star Wars). Episode Index Intro: 0:07 K-Pop Demon Hunters: 3:00 Disney’s Boy Problems: 9:00 Alien Earth: 40:36 Disney's Boy Trouble: Studio Seeks Original IP to Win Back Gen-Z Men Amid Marvel, Lucasfilm Struggles https://variety.com/2025/film/news/disney-marvel-lucasfilm-gen-z-1236494681/ Leadership at Walt Disney Studios has been pressing Hollywood creatives in recent months, multiple sources tell Variety, for movies that will bring young men back to the brand in a meaningful way. “Young men” is defined here by sources as ages 13-28, aka Gen Z. Alien: Earth (FX/Hulu) Episode 3 – “Metamorphosis” Summary: Nibs questions Curly about why the hybrids are all named after Peter Pan characters and why Marcy gets to be Wendy. Kavalier orders the specimens be brought to Neverland Island for study, despite objections from Kirsh and Dame Sylvia. Morrow finds Smee and Slightly guarding the Xenomorph eggs and interrogates them, suspicious of their childlike behavior. He downloads the specimen data from the Maginot and plants a device on Slightly before escaping. Meanwhile, Wendy and Hermit fight the Xenomorph with a meat hook, and Wendy kills it, although both sustain serious injuries. Returning to the island, Hermit undergoes surgery, and the Sylvias tend to Wendy. Kavalier inspects the specimens until Kirsh removes him for his own protection. Atom Eins questions Smee and Slightly about their encounter with Morrow. Having escaped into New Siam, Morrow calls Yutani and insists on retrieving the specimens despite being ordered to return home. Curly confronts Kavalier about his favoritism towards Wendy, believing herself to be the best hybrid. Morrow contacts Slightly via the embedded device, convincing him to be his friend. Kirsh, Tootles, and Curly dissect a facehugger and introduce its larvae to Hermit’s lung, removed during surgery. Wendy awakens, seemingly intercepting signals from the Xenomorph eggs, which cause her pain. She ultimately collapses in the laboratory containing the eggs. Strap in for chaos—Johnny Spoiler kicks things off with a wild Frontier Airlines story that plays out like a sitcom at 30,000 feet. Then it's on to this week's Home Video Headlines: Nicolas Cage circling HBO's True Detective Season 5, horror legends teaming for Spawn of the Living Dead, and the unexpected rise of Bone Lake. The main feature? 1976's Drive-In Massacre—a cult slasher where a sword-wielding killer stalks couples at a California drive-in. Johnny breaks down the bizarre production history, no-permit shoots, and why the ending still frustrates horror fans. Plus, favorite moments (yes, including Germy the circus geek), fan questions about Marvel crossovers, and a staff pick spotlight on Amityville Dollhouse. If you love slasher movies, cult horror, and offbeat movie news, this episode delivers. Stick around for ratings, laughs, and a reminder that sometimes the scariest part of a drive-in isn't the movie on the screen—it's what's waiting in the dark.Try Paramount Plus FREE for 7 days https://paramountplus.qflm.net/Ry9G3v

At 30, Stephanie Szostak made the bold decision to pursue acting – despite the long odds of success and the skeptics who questioned the move.
