We remember it was funny and had a great cast: Mandy Moore, Jena Malone, that kid from Almost Famous, that kid from Home Alone, and that hot mom who sold all that weed in that show. At a time when comedy movies were abundant and popular, Saved may have gone under the radar at the box office, but those who found it found a clever and funny film. This is the loosely biographical story of writer/director Cameron Crowe as a teenager, played here by Patrick Fugit in his first film role, as he tags along with a band as a 15 year old journalist for Rolling Stone. Brad Pitt and Christian Bale almost played Russell Hammond, the guitarist of a fictional band on the rise in "Almost Famous". Pitt said "nah" and our buddy Billy Crudup ended up with the role of a lifetime. In his 11th credit, Crudup plays the coolest person you'd ever meet, and someone so handsome everybody else in the band looks like a bag of trash. Horsemen seems to have gotten memory-holed immediately after the fest circuit (or...during production by much of the below-the-line talent?), and with good reason -- it's bafflingly poor, studded with visual clichés, its actors apparently undirected, its script evidently without access to a Bible despite basing its tortuously contrived serial-killer procedural plot on more than one book therein. It's got a grieving-family subplot that should have come to the foreground, and a couple of actors -- including Quaid! -- who could have carried that version of the movie, but the version we got is a disorganized Seven For Teens with a crumbly topping of dated kink-shaming. A lot of the cast is either straight-up wasted in this mess or doing more than they need to, but Quaid is actually not bad. Gleaming The Tube

2004's SAVED!, directed by Brian Donnelly (who also co-wrote the film) follows a teenaged girl played by Jena Malone who attends a Christian high school and, as part of an attempt to “cure” her boyfriend of his homosexuality, winds up pregnant and facing the ostracization of her classmates, most notably the self-righteous Hillary Fae, played by Mandy Moore. The film also stars Patrick Fugit, Martin Donovan, Eva Amuri, Macaulay Culkin and the always effervescent Mary Louise Parker. Kevin and Mike tackle the film's portrayal of religion, the way some people distort Christian messages to suit their own prejudices, the cast, the movie's status as a time capsule of mid-2000s culture, and the skateboarding antics of Patrick Fugit's rebellious Christian missionary. Hallelujah, it's a new Gleaming the Tube!

Book Vs Movie: “Almost Famous” Based on several articles by Cameron Crowe in Rolling Stone Vs the 2000 film  In 1973, writer Cameron Crowe was just your ordinary 16-year-old on the road with The Allman Brothers writing a cover story about the band's troubles and successes while going on the road. The resulting article came out in December 1973 and changed his life becoming a well-respected journalist who covered the biggest bands of the 70s including Led Zeppelin, The Who, and The Eagles all before he was old enough to have a driver's license.  Years later, he would spend a year undercover as a high school student at Clairmont High School in San Diego to write Fast Times at Ridgemont High  (it would become his first screenplay as well.) Later films of his include Say Anything, Jerry Maguire, and Singles but the film that most closely resembles his life is Almost Famous.  The story of William Miller (played by newcomer Patrick Fugit) a teenager who gets the assignment of his dreams--to write about the new band “Stillwater” for Rolling Stone magazine. Along the way, he befriends “Band-Aids” who are NOT groupies but rather muses for their favorite musicians. Led by 16-year-old Penny Lane (Kate Hudson in an Academy Award-nominated performance) she follows lead guitarist Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup) on the road and teaches William how to live life as if there were no tomorrow.  The movie is filled with rock-n-roll tropes such as greedy managers, awful promoters (Marc Maron's “lock the gates!” intro on the WTF podcast comes from this movie,) sex, drugs, and misogyny abound. There is also a great deal of heart and warmth here with Frances McDormand playing William's tough but loving mother. Zooey Deschanel plays his stewardess sister who is running away to find herself in the early 1970s.  The film was a big hit for all involved and the budget for the soundtrack (which includes more classic rock classics than can seem bearable) was reportedly $3 million. Crowe won an Academy Award for his screenplay and Hudson became the movie Rom-Com queen for the next 20 years.  There has been controversy, however, with THE ultimate groupie (no shame in her game!) Pamela Des Barres is NOT consulted even though she wrote the seminal work on fandom I'm With the Band. After some "backsliding," we use to rededicate ourselves to our podcast by discussing Susan's pick: 2004s "Saved!" starring Jenna Malone, Mandy Moore, Macaulay Culkin, Eva Amurri, Patrick Fugit, and Mary Louise Parker.   "Saved!" tells the story of Mary Cummings (Malone), a senior at a fundamental Christian school who learns her boyfriend is gay.  Believing that Jesus will restore her purity, Mary has sex with him in an attempt to rid him of his homosexuality. The plan doesn't work. Mary's boyfriend gets sent to a Christain rehabilitation center, and Mary ends up pregnant. Mary must deal with her shaken faith and hide her pregnancy to stay in school and avoid being bullied by her ex-friend, the uber pious Hillary-Faye (Moore.) Susan and Greg discuss the teen satire's themes of religion, faith, hypocrisy, and questioning of one's deeply held beliefs. They also disucss the performances of the cast and the much darker ending written initially for the film. As usual, Susan and Greg also talk about the one plot that took them out of the movie in "I Have Questions" and share their top three favorite scenes.

Almost Famous is a 2000 American comedy-drama film written and directed by Cameron Crowe and starring Billy Crudup, Frances McDormand, Kate Hudson, and Patrick Fugit. It tells the story of a teenage journalist writing for Rolling Stone in the early 1970s, his touring with the fictitious rock band Stillwater, and his efforts to get his first cover story published. The film is semi-autobiographical, as Crowe himself was a teenage writer for Rolling Stone. It is based on his experiences touring with rock bands Poco, the Allman Brothers Band, Led Zeppelin, Eagles, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Crowe has discussed how during this period he lost his virginity, fell in love, and met his musical heroes—these events represented in the film as happening to William Miller (Fugit), the boyish main character.

Almost Famous is one of the most charming and enjoyable pictures of the past 20 years, so it provides us with much fat to chew on in the 360th Ellises’ Analysis. Well, okay, only one Ellis loves it. The other Ellis is no fan of Cameron Crowe’s ultra-personal road movie about friendship, love and rock ‘n’ roll. A big part of the disagreement is that we’re split on the effectiveness of Kate Hudson’s work and especially about how she was written by Crowe, but only a paranoid Billy Crudup can deny that Patrick Fugit is lovable & delightful in his very first movie. Throw in some McDormand, some Hoffman, some Deschanel, some incredible music and some big laughs and you’ve got yourself a hit. Well, this movie wasn’t actually a hit (wasn’t even close) and the negative feelings of one of us might explain why. Anyway, it’s all happening, so settle in for a lengthy gab and also…you have a good day! Well, Actually: To be clear, Roger Ebert said in his review that he wanted to hug Almost Famous, not the documentary about him (Life Itself). Also, it’s The Wind by Cat Stevens that’s playing when Hudson is dancing alone after one of the concerts. Also also, Fugit (which apparently is pronounced “Few-gut”, not “Few-jit”) WAS indeed in Outcast. I may have mentioned back during Season 1 just how great Cinemax's 'Outcast' series, based on the Images Comics series by Robert Kirkman and Paul Azaceta, is! Well, I hope you listened because Season 2 is airing right now and it is just as great! To celebrate the show's return, I sat down with series star Patrick Fugit and showrunner Chris Black and talked about the uniqueness of this supernatural possession series. What went into crafting the specific tone? Did they have trouble portraying the level of darkness and violence necessary to getting the story right? And how did they pull off some of those incredible possession effects?
