Kris talks about the new podcast Can You Dig It? with narrator Chuck D of Public Enemy, along with both producers to discover the untold origins of Hip Hop.  The story is told through a blend of immersive reenactments, oral history and expert discussion, Can You Dig It? is as illuminating for hip-hop fans as it is for history buffs, as one of the great American stories.About the Can You Dig It? Podcast:How did hip-hop happen? To understand that, we have to go back to before the ‘birth' of the culture. It wasn't a given that the Bronx of the late 1960s and early 1970s would be the birthplace of an American art form. Urban renewal had left the borough neglected and in crisis. Gangs policed the streets, and winding up in the wrong territory could have serious consequences. But things were about to change. Can You Dig It? is an in-depth history of how positive community influences helped inspire the troubled youth to end the cycle of gang violence, as told by people who were there at the time. It's the inspiring true story of how local gang the Ghetto Brothers rejected calls for war in the aftermath of the murder of Black Benjie–a member who was trying to find common ground–and how gang leaders Yellow Benjy and Karate Charlie worked to broker a peace with rivals. The end result? A place where urban artistry could flourish into a global culture fifty years strong: hip-hop.Narrated by Public Enemy's Chuck D and told through a blend of immersive reenactments, oral history and expert discussion, Can You Dig It? is as illuminating for hip-hop fans as it is for history buffs, as one of the great American stories. It's a tribute not just to community action but to the unsung heroes who paved the way for greatness.©2023 PB and J Productions, LLC (P)2023 Audible Originals, LLC--Can You Dig It? is availible to listen to NOW on Audible Originals - CLICK HERE For more from Chuck D - Visit his website MrChuckD.comFor more from Producers Bryan Master & Pete Chelala - Visit their website PB&J Productions--About the Podcast: ‘TEXT PROSE AND ROCK N ROLL'- is the only podcast dedicated to the written account of musicians. She introduced the world to a new sound of rebellion, using her unconventional voice to sing about identity, consumerism, postmodernism, and everything she saw unfolding in late 1970s Britain, with a rare prescience. As the frontwoman of X-Ray Spex, the Anglo-Somali punk musician was also a key inspiration for the riot grrrl and Afropunk movements. But the late punk maverick didn't just leave behind an immense cultural footprint.Poly was survived by a daughter, Celeste Bell. Celeste became the unwitting guardian of her mother's legacy and her mother's demons. Misogyny, racism, and mental illness plagued Poly's life, while their lasting trauma scarred Celeste's childhood and the pair's relationship.Featuring unseen archive material and rare diary entries narrated by Oscar-nominee Ruth Negga, this documentary follows Celeste as she examines her mother's unopened artistic archive and traverses three continents to better understand Poly the icon and Poly the mother.--About the Podcast: ‘TEXT PROSE AND ROCK N ROLL'- is the only podcast dedicated to the written account of musicians. LINER NOTES: This week, Kris chats with Andy Murnane & Brotha D, and they discuss their  untold story of acclaimed New Zealand music label Dawn Raid Entertainment.About the film: Dawn Raid is the story of two Manukau Polytechnic students, Andy Murane and Tanielu Leaosavai'i (aka Brotha D) who turned a bootleg t-shirt business and Hip-Hop night at a local bar in Otara into the influential Dawn Raid Entertainment empire. From humble beginnings to fame and fortune, Andy, Brotha D and the Dawn Raid artists gave voice to a disenfranchised Pacific community, for which the violence of the dawn raids, twenty years previously, was still raw. But the bravado and contempt for the status quo that drove Andy and Brotha D to the top, was also the unravelling of their empire. Unpaid tax debts, rifts between artists, and a feeling of betrayal and failure underpinned the downfall of Dawn Raid Entertainment, though not before they had created an immeasurable musical legacy that would pave the way for future New Zealand artists to reach international audiences.  More from Dawn Raid: Learn more about the movie and watch the Trailer here.  and watch the film here. Watch the film on Apple iTunes. Dawn Raid on Social Media: @DawnRaidEntertainment@BrothaD274@Andy1979MGMT--About the Podcast: ‘TEXT PROSE AND ROCK N ROLL'- is the only podcast dedicated to the written account of musicians. LINER NOTES: Happy New Year! Welcome as we kick off another year of tracks of TPR... This week, Kris debuts 2022 with a conversation with author Dan Ozzi to talk about punk rock and his book, Sellout: The Major-Label Feeding Frenzy That Swept Punk, Emo, and Hardcore (1994–2007)About the book: A raucous history of punk, emo, and hardcore's growing pains during the commercial boom of the early 90s and mid-aughts, following eleven bands as they “sell out” and find mainstream fame, or break beneath the weight of it allPunk rock found itself at a crossroads in the mid-90's. After indie favorite Nirvana catapulted into the mainstream with its unexpected phenomenon, Nevermind, rebellion was suddenly en vogue. Looking to replicate the band's success, major record labels set their sights on the underground, and began courting punk's rising stars. But the DIY punk scene, which had long prided itself on its trademark authenticity and anti-establishment ethos, wasn't quite ready to let their homegrown acts go without a fight. The result was a schism: those who accepted the cash flow of the majors, and those who defiantly clung to their indie cred. In Sellout, seasoned music writer Dan Ozzi chronicles this embattled era in punk. Focusing on eleven prominent bands who made the jump from indie to major, Sellout charts the twists and turns of the last “gold rush” of the music industry, where some groups “sold out” and rose to surprise super stardom, while others buckled under mounting pressures. Sellout is both a gripping history of the music industry's evolution, and a punk rock lover's guide to the chaotic darlings of the post-grunge era, featuring original interviews and personal stories from members of modern punk's most (in)famous bandsFor more from Dan and SELLOUT - visit his website. --About the Podcast: ‘TEXT PROSE AND ROCK N ROLL'- is the only podcast dedicated to the written account of musicians. LINER NOTES: On this track, Kris sits down with classic, 70's LA based punk band, Backstage Pass, to discuss a new documentary short brought to you by Dr. Martens, Women in Punk LA. Check the documentary HERE. More about Backstage Pass: Backstage Pass was a mostly-female American punk-pop band from Los Angeles. The band was formed in 1976, and is known as one of the city's earliest punk bands. They are also recognized for helping to build and launch Hollywood's most iconic punk venue, The Masque.Marina Del Rey (Marina Muhlfriedel) started the band on a whim with bassist Joanna Spock Dean. Before they ever played a note, Backstage Pass was announced in Britain's “Melody Maker” and “Sounds” music newspapers, and in Rodney Bingenheimer's “Phonograph Record Magazine” column. Genny Body (Genny Schorr), Ché Zuro, and Barrakuda Majors (Holly Beth Vincent) were other key members of the group. There were several incarnations of the band, all comprised of female musicians, except for an assortment of male drummers. Drummer Rod “The Perve” Mitchell played with Backstage Pass longer than any other drummer. Mike Ruiz from Milk n' Cookies also performed in various lineups. The band spent its first months rehearsing at Cherokee Studios in a room with a one-way mirror, through which Alice Cooper, David Bowie and others would watch them try to figure out their instruments. Their relationship to Stiff Records founder Jake Riviera, Elvis Costello, and British punk band The Damned coaxed them out of the rehearsal room and onto the stage. They played extensively in Southern and Northern California on bills with Devo, The Mumps, Wall of Voodoo, The Nuns, Elvis Costello (opening his first US tour!), The Screamers, The Weirdos and others. Backstage Pass was often featured in seminal punk publications including “Backdoor Man,” “Slash Magazine,” “Flipside” and others, photographed by notable rock photographers including Jenny Lens, Brad Elterman, Donna Santisi and James Stark.--About the Podcast: ‘TEXT PROSE AND ROCK N ROLL'- is the only podcast dedicated to the written account of musicians. Her journey as an entrepreneur has helped her not only unmask this pursuit, but has shaped her sense of self, her definition of success, and the rules she lives by to make it manifest. In this episode you'll hear Rooshy talk about how emotionally detaching from business is essential for any entrepreneur, how she dealt with past burnout, and how she embraces presence in an industry hell bent on keeping our minds craving the future.--Connect with Rooshy:Website: https://aavrani.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/aavranihttps://www.instagram.com/rooshyroyTwitter:  https://twitter.com/aavrani--For more from Host Pooja Mottl: https://www.poojamottl.com/Podcast Producer: https://www.go-toproductions.com/Twitter: @PoojaMottl https://twitter.com/poojamottlInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/poojamottl/https://www.instagram.com/thecalmandfreepodcast/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/poojamottl/ Special thanks to:Kris Kosach for voiceover: https://www.sites.google.com/view/textproserocknroll/homeJessica Panian: for graphic design: https://www.jessicapanian.com/Sufi Kaur for social graphics

#59 - Three Minute Thursday: The "Me" Mentality

Her Mindset Community Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 7, 2021 3:57

Welcome to our new segment, "Three Minute Thursday"  (#3MinThursday) where I highlight a piece of wisdom I've come across from my own readings over the past week, or share with you an inspirational anecdote that can help you lead a more calm, free and full life.Today I'd like to offer you my thoughts on what I call the “Me Mentality". The Me Mentality happens when we live and act solely to feed and protect our own ego. And it may come as no surprise that most of us live with this mentality every day, and for some, all our lives. Here are some signs that you're living in a me mentality: When you're on a zoom call for work but thinking about whether the other person thinks what you're saying is smart; Someone criticizes your work or doesn't give you business making you stressed, angry, and vengeful; You fail to say hello to your UPS driver because you think you're too busy to take the time out. That's the me mentality. Now if we can extract the me from the way we live, life becomes so much richer, easier and pleasant. If our lives stop becoming all about us and instead about service to others or for a purpose beyond ourselves, anxieties and stress melts away. Extracting yourself from the Me Mentality can be as simple as working to be the best version of yourself so you can serve your kids and family better. If you're work is in the fields of law, finance, or marketing, it could be the goal of honing theories or making technological improvements to advance the efficacy of those fields beyond your tenure. If you've a teacher or a coach, its minimizing the suffering of your students or clients. If you're work in the C-Suite or head a nonprofit, if may be building a legacy that will help humanity for many generations to follow.Every morning, try to remind yourself about the Me Mentality, and make it a point to make what you do and what you think, not about yourself, but for others. You'll see that when you do this, you'll start smiling more, succeeding more, and loving life more. Remember, its not about YOU.--For more from Host Pooja Mottl:  www.PoojaMottl.comPodcast Producer: www.Go-ToProductions.comTwitter: @PoojaMottlInstagram: @TheCalmandFreePodcast and @PoojaMottl  LinkedIn: @PoojaMottlSpecial Thanks to Kris Kosach of the TPR Podcast for lending her VO for our Podcast Intro!

#58 - How Humans Manufacture Problems with Wisdom from Sadhguru

Her Mindset Community Podcast

Welcome back everybody. I was listening to a podcast with Tony Robbins and Sadhguru recently and I heard Sadhguru – who is an Indian spiritual master – compare the human existence with the existence of other animals. He gave a powerful example – he said when most animals have a full stomach, they feel satiated and at peace. They've solved their one essential problem: an empty stomach. But when we humans have full stomachs, we end up having hundreds of problems. The story here is that although Mother Nature has given humans a special capability over other animals – a remarkable cognitive capacity - we haven't yet learned to master this capability. We're actually so bad at utilizing our cognitive abilities that we end up creating undo suffering for ourselves. When are stomachs are full, we're safe, we're physically healthy, we have supportive relationships, contentment should be a breeze. Yet our monkey minds – jumping from thought to thought – bait us into manufacturing problems. We create assembly lines that even Henry Ford would admire, producing problem after problem in our minds. Judging situations, craving something in the future, shaming ourselves for something we did in the past, seeking pleasures to escape from the now, disgruntled with life due to our own perceptions.Sadhguru describes this as unnecessary human suffering caused by the freedom that Mother Nature has offered to us. That freedom is our uniquely powerful minds. This week, think about how this applies to you. How often are you full in your stomach but also full of manufactured problems? How many of these so-called problems do you actually, truly, have? We'll continue to delve into this incredibly important topic in future episodes so stay tuned... --For more from Host Pooja Mottl:  www.PoojaMottl.comPodcast Producer: www.Go-ToProductions.comTwitter: @PoojaMottlInstagram: @TheCalmandFreePodcast and @PoojaMottl  LinkedIn: @PoojaMottlSpecial Thanks to Kris Kosach of the TPR Podcast for lending her VO for our Podcast Intro!

Welcome to our new segment, "Three Minute Thursday"  (#3MinuteThursday) where I highlight a piece of wisdom I've come across from my own readings over the past week, or share with you an inspirational anecdote that can help you lead a more calm, free and full life.Today's episode provides reflections on how to deal with the past from teachings from spiritual guru Sadhguru and author of The Power of Now, Eckert Tolle.----Hi everyone, in this #3MinuteThursday episode I want to share some profound wisdom about how to treat the past from the Indian philosopher and teacher Sadhguru. So many of us identify with the past, especially if it makes us feel very good or feel bad – that is the nature of the monkey mind. But the past is dead. The past has passed, so to speak. It's gone.  Over and done.Especially when situations or people in our past begin to weigh us down in the now, that's when we have to stop and check ourselves. Sadhguru says it this way: When you keep the past alive, the living will slowly die.The idea here is that we should refrain from trying to fix the past lest we keep ourselves playing from our back foot today. The less our minds live in the past, the more free we are right now to flourish. Sadhguru says that in fact, the more unpleasant things happen in your life, the wiser you should become. I'll add on to this by saying that this happens because as we get more practice in managing our thoughts about the past, making sure to label them as over, the better we are at mastering life now...Listen to the episode for more.--For more from Host Pooja Mottl:  www.PoojaMottl.comPodcast Producer: www.Go-ToProductions.comTwitter: @PoojaMottlInstagram: @TheCalmandFreePodcast and @PoojaMottl  LinkedIn: @PoojaMottlSpecial Thanks to Kris Kosach of the TPR Podcast for lending her VO for our Podcast Intro!

Welcome to our new segment, "Three Minute Thursday"  (#3MinThursday) where I highlight a piece of wisdom I've come across from my own readings over the past week, or share with you an inspirational anecdote that can help you lead a more calm, free and full life.Today's episode provides three easy ways to practice presence:Ask yourself what is going on inside me right know? Am I feeling nervous or uneasy or tight? Try to get in touch with your emotions because emotions are merely reflections of the mind. And usually our minds are busy manufacturing problems. So when you can tap into your emotions, you are automatically practicing presence and you give your mind a chance to pause, rest and reset.Ask yourself, what thoughts am I producing in my head right now? I do this often when I'm driving. I observe where my mind is going (which is usually thinking about something I have to do or judging a situation) and I bring it back to the now – I notice the feeling in hands from the steering wheel, I pay attention to the license plate ahead of me and the scenery outside the window. By being the observer of your thoughts you can steer them back to the present.Use your five senses to bring you back to the here and now. I just talked about feeling the steering wheel with my hands as I'm driving. That's one example. I also like to immerse myself in the sounds around me – the rustling of the leaves or people talking. Often we move through life completely out of touch with the sounds around us. Try to feel the air moving through your nostrils or paying extra special attention to how each sip of your coffee tastes. By activating your senses you immerse yourself in the present, the only place in which you can live your best, most calm, most fulfilling life.--For more from Host Pooja Mottl:  www.PoojaMottl.comPodcast Producer: www.Go-ToProductions.comTwitter: @PoojaMottlInstagram: @TheCalmandFreePodcast and @PoojaMottl  LinkedIn: @PoojaMottlSpecial Thanks to Kris Kosach of the TPR Podcast for lending her VO for our Podcast Intro!

Welcome to our new segment, "Three Minute Thursdays" where I highlight a piece of wisdom I've come across from my own readings over the past week, or share with you an inspirational anecdote that can help you lead a more calm, free and full life. This week a very thoughtful, friend of mine, a mom like me with two young kids here in the bay area, shared an IG post from a company called Little Renegades that sells products to help children cultivate mindfulness. The post had a graphic on it which read “I want my kids to be happy” but “to be happy” was crossed out. In its place it read “to feel comfortable experiencing all kinds of emotions without judgement”.The post went on to say that we often times inadvertently emphasize happiness, not just with our kids, but with ourselves, not realizing that sustainable joy – long term joy doesn't come from chasing happiness. In Buddhist philosophy it is taught that happiness comes not from pursuing it, but instead from understanding that feelings - good and bad – come and go. That's simply the nature of our existence. Ups and downs come and go. Nothing stays. Nothing is permanent. So instead of asking your child “did you have a good day?” which wires their brains to think “good” is something to covet and bad is something to avoid, you can say “tell me about your day” which de-emphasizes the importance of the fleeting feeling of happiness and instead creates an opportunity for your child to freely accept and welcome the highs and lows of their day.By teaching ourselves and our kids that we aren't our feelings…and to accept people and experiences as they are without judgement...we lay out the best path to cultivating joy that actually does last.

Feelings come and go like ripples on the surface of the water. Be the stone that sits steady at the floor of the ocean.#2. Today remind yourself that it's not about you. What you do today is greater than YOU. Remind yourself about the bigger meaning in your life. (Wisdom from MLK Jr.)#3. Today be dispassionate. Live in the middle of aversion and craving. You're present, but distant; Caring, but unattached. If somebody says something to you, don't take it personally. If someone is struggling, be there, but don't let it absorb you. if something goes your way, great, if it doesn't, great too. Be the master of your emotions. (Wisdom from Patanjali's Yoga Sutras and Vedic philosophy)#4. Today live life with a smooth ease. Effort can be relaxed. If you can release tension you can unwind. And when you unwind you'll find that you can finally deliver the full power of your potential in the world. Ease allows for the best version of you to come through. (Wisdom from Sadhguru)#5. Today be present. The present is the only moment when you are fulling experiencing LIFE. You are now. Keep your mind where you are and you will find anxiety slip away and joy start sticking to you. Hi everyone – welcome back to the Calm & Free Podcast. On Fridays like this one I share a short, under 3 minute monologue with you where I highlight a piece of wisdom I've come across from my own readings or learnings this past week, or share with you an inspirational anecdote that can help you lead a more calm, free and full life. This week I want to spotlight the power inherent in TURNING OFF YOUR PHONE. On Wednesday I took a presence break, a block of 20 minutes where I stop everything I'm doing, calm my body, and give my mind the opportunity to connect with the present moment. I was lying on my hammock with my phone beside me and I picked it up and turned it off. The simple action of turning off my phone completely – not just silencing the ring – but shutting it down totally – gave me this almost immediate sensation of lightness. I was unreachable for the next 20 minutes and that made me feel free and happy. The noise of the world couldn't reach me. I was alone with myself in the stillness of the present moment.Turning off your phone – whether its for 5 min, a half hour, or hours on end can be one of the most healthy, essential things you can do to care for yourself. It helps you connect with the present – the only place where happiness resides. I'm going to do this more often, and I hope you'll give it a try too.--For more from Host Pooja Mottl:  www.PoojaMottl.comPodcast Producer: www.Go-ToProductions.comTwitter: @PoojaMottlInstagram: @TheCalmandFreePodcast and @PoojaMottl  LinkedIn: @PoojaMottlSpecial Thanks to Kris Kosach of the TPR Podcast for lending her VO for our Podcast Intro!

Welcome back to our last and final episode on Rest - a human superpower. In the last five episodes we've explored some of the biological and societal implications for our unhealthy relationship with rest, we've also practiced a meditation, celebrated Winnie the Pooh's love for "doing nothing" and talked out how our misgivings about rest link to burnout. This whole series has referred to rest as a human superpower – why?  When I first started meditating using some of the practices taught by humanitarian and spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, he often spoke about letting your mind expand. It took me many years to start to unravel this idea of expansion and be able to conceptualize it. Expansion is relaxation. It is ease. It is calm.Once you're able to expand the mind, you find ease, and when you find ease, you find joy.Yoga guru and best selling author Sadhguru, who recently sat down with Tony Robbins on his podcast, thinks of ease as the cornerstone of the good life. Without ease, he says, it is impossible to have lasting joy and happiness. Ease it everything. In fact, he says, ease and rest are the basis of activity. Someone who is constantly resting within herself or himself is capable of endless, dynamic activity. In other words, if you are at rest inside, you become a powerful force on the outside – able to unleash all of your greatness into the world and into life.So rest is a superpower – this is why we've talked about it this way throughout this entire series. Rest is a tool to make you great. To give you freedom. To enrich your life.So rest is something to cultivate and I'll leave it with all of you now to ponder and deliberate further about how you can add more ease and rest to your already beautiful existence. Love to all and see you next time.

Welcome back as we explore the human superpower of rest. In this episode we're going to dive into the idea of having a lazy day with nothing to do but rest. Now you will recall rest isn't sleep. Rest is our ability to power down the mind, get out of our analytical right brain, find stillness, and unplug our mind from the grind. Just like we need to rest our bodies, we need to rest our minds. A great way to rest our minds is by allowing time to unfold without a schedule or checking your watch. Have you ever lived just one lazy day without having anything planned? Here's how Thich Nhat Hanh beautifully describes a lazy day from his book How to Relax:“Most of us have very scheduled lives and very full calendars. But do we have enough lazy days in our calendar? A lazy day is a day for us to be without any scheduled activities. We just let the day unfold naturally, timelessly. On this day we have a chance to reestablish the balance in ourselves. When we have unscheduled time, we tend to get bored or cast about for something to do. A lazy day is a chance to train ourselves not to be afraid of doing nothing. You might think that not doing anything is a waste of time. But that's not true. Your time is first of all for you to be – to be alive, to be peace.”--For more from Host Pooja Mottl:  www.PoojaMottl.comPodcast Producer: www.Go-ToProductions.comTwitter: @PoojaMottlInstagram: @TheCalmandFreePodcast and @PoojaMottl  LinkedIn: @PoojaMottlSpecial Thanks to Kris Kosach of the TPR Podcast for lending her VO for our Podcast Intro!

August is a great month to unplug, relax and rest – for me it's a time to spend quality, undistracted moments with my children and my family, to unplug from work mode, to start tapping into my creative intuition, and find more time to manifest calm and stillness in my mind. Rest isn't sleep – much of it is about getting a reprieve from the logical, analytical, linear thinking that's the bread and butter of the left brain, what the majority of us are rewarded for in the modern world. Rest doesn't just enhance well-being, it prevents burnout – a condition that's reached almost pandemic levels.I wrote about how an avoidance of rest connects to burnout in a post published at Thrive Global. The gist of the article is that burnout doesn't come only from external forces like long hours mandated by office culture or work duties or little to no vacation hours, but also from an internal belief about our self-worth that we harbor deep within  our psyche – the belief that we're not enough. Not high enough on the totem pole of social hierarchy, not wealthy enough, not influential enough, not handsome enough, not promoted enough or any one of numerous "not enoughs".When the media is obsessed with promoting extremes as the economic divide increases, when technology enables an always on mentality, and when social media is driven by AI algorithms that want to spotlight mainly highlight reels, its no wonder why so many of us feel like we're never enough. And when we feel like we've got an uphill battle in the race to find enough external validation to fill up our empty enough-ness bucket, we do only what we've been almost puritanically conditioned to do: keep struggling and work even harder. And of course, the harder we work, the closer we get to the teetering edge of burnout. And this idea of enough-ness has reached seemingly pandemic levels which leads to a drop in happiness and anxiety and even more stress. In this episode we'll look into the many antidotes for enough-ness.--For more from Host Pooja Mottl:  www.PoojaMottl.comPodcast Producer: www.Go-ToProductions.comTwitter: @PoojaMottlInstagram: @TheCalmandFreePodcast and @PoojaMottl  LinkedIn: @PoojaMottlSpecial Thanks to Kris Kosach of the TPR Podcast for lending her VO for our Podcast Intro!

In the last episode, Episode #43, we looked at how rest is an innate, visceral part of being human and how we need to reset ourselves to be able to tap into our natural instincts of rest. Now we're going to experience rest with an easy mindfulness breathwork meditation that you can do anywhere. Nhat Hanh says that relaxation is essential for accessing the tranquility and joy that lead to increased personal well-being and that “If we can't rest, its because we haven't stopped running” – running the body and the mind. So in this mediation, we're going to calm both.

In this episode we'll get into why rest is an instinctual, innate part of being human. Animals naturally rest  -  lions spend the majority of their days lying around and resting. And when an animal is wounded, they look for a very quiet place and stay there for many days, letting their body heal itself. They don't think about their next meal. They fast. Animals have the wisdom of stopping and resting.  We humans also have this innate capacity to rest, but we've been conditioned to go-go-go, and this tendency continues to increase as the pace of technology increases.  So in order to get back to our instinctual primitive behavior of rest, we need to reset ourselves. We need to first use reason and intellectualize why rest is natural, which we are doing right now, and second we need to experience it on a soulful level by actually doing it more. And its not just the body that needs rest. When animals instinctually rest their bodies to heal, they are also resting their minds. They're not thinking of their next meal or anything else. They've simply checked-out.We know the body needs rest because we can see signs or we can feel that we're tired or sore. But even though the mind doesn't raise flags in the same way, it needs rest to heal too. As Nhat Hanh discusses it, in our consciousness there are wounds and sores, fogginess and burnout  – all from the thoughts, the memories, and so on. Our consciousness also needs to rest in order to restore itself, just like our body. He writes the following in his book, “How to Relax”: “When we get a cut on our finger we don't have to do anything except to clean it and to allow it the time to heal, because our body knows how to heal itself. The same thing is true with our consciousness; our consciousness knows how to heal itself if we know how to allow it to do so. “Resting the mind doesn't have to come solely through meditation and mindful breathing. You can rest the mind by unplugging from the grind for a few minutes, hours, or a few days or by taking a walk and staying present with the nature around you, or by spending time with someone you love – immersed in that time without distraction. Or by reading a book or by simply getting out of your left brain, the side of your brain that involves facts, linear thinking and logic, and more into your right brain which is connected to intuitive thinking, rhythm, imagination and art.In the end, what we're talking about here is that rest is inherent and inborn. We're set up naturally to rest more, we now just have to relearn how to make it manifest and prioritize it in our lives. Don't be afraid or embarrassed to just take a pillow and lie down for a few minute, or roll up your jacket and take a rest on the train or in the Uber. Rest is you. Rest is your birthright. Rest is your superpower.Reference Links:https://www.lionsroar.com/resting-in-the-river/--For more from Host Pooja Mottl:  www.PoojaMottl.comPodcast Producer: www.Go-ToProductions.comTwitter: @PoojaMottlInstagram: @TheCalmandFreePodcast and @PoojaMottl  LinkedIn: @PoojaMottlSpecial Thanks to Kris Kosach of the TPR Podcast for lending her VO for our Podcast Intro!

In his NYT best selling book, Sapiens, celebrated author Yuval Noah Harari explains how the unprecedented leap humans made to the top of the food chain over such a relatively short period in history created psychological consequences that we continue to experience today. While most top predators like lions and sharks had millions of years to cultivate calm and confidence, our poll volt to the top dog position happened only about 100,00 years ago, which has kept our psychology hardwired for anxiousness, always at the ready to stave off any threats to the stability of our position. Perhaps its this biological factor that has contributed to our habit of wanting to be always “on”. Buddhist monk and Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh calls this human tendency to be always on, “the habit energy of struggle”.Yet there's more to this habit than ancient Sapien history. In the United States, our need to be "always on" is amplified by the legendary American Dream, this idea that anyone has an equal opportunity to achieve prosperity and upward mobility simply by working hard. We assume that hard work will make us richer, particulary in the material sense. So the more we keep our nose to the grindstone, the more material wealth we'll obtain – the dream house, the dream job, the dream car, etc. And because the majority of us haven't yet got the memo that being materially successful doesn't equate to happiness, we've become workaholics, stuck in an endless cycle of working hard to obtain the next level of material riches, only to realize that there's always someone ahead of us, no matter if you're Warren Buffet or Mark Cuban. And so we continue ignorantly working towards that next goalpost.Yet There's something even more subtle that keeps us “always-on” and guilty of resting. And that's this idea that your job shouldn't be just a job, but a “calling”, and that calling is the centerpiece of your identity. In other words, as entrepreneurship  and tech innovation continue to enable more of us to make a living by doing what we love, we've adopted a mentality that the meaning of life can only be found tightly bundled in work. We've therefore  catapulted work to almost a godlike status and in doing so, we've normalized workaholism while simultaneously rejecting relaxation.  Now more than ever before, humans are defining themselves by the work they do, not by leisure time, hobby time, vacation time, or  family time. And interestingly this type of workaholism is best represented by folks at the highest rungs of the socio-economic ladder. As Atlantic writer Derek Thompson so deftly put it: The best-educated and highest-earning Americans, who can have whatever they want, have chosen the “office” for the same reason that devout Christians attend church on Sundays: It's where they feel most themselves.  So why rest when we feel most at ease when we're working? --For more from Host Pooja Mottl:  www.PoojaMottl.comPodcast Producer: www.Go-ToProductions.comTwitter: @PoojaMottlInstagram: @TheCalmandFreePodcast and @PoojaMottl  LinkedIn: @PoojaMottlSpecial Thanks to Kris Kosach of the TPR Podcast for lending her VO for our Podcast Intro!

Greg discusses their new punk rock manifesto, “Do What You Want”, the band's outlook on the state of the world, and the nearly fatal rock concert that was not widely covered by the media.  Excerpt from DO WHAT YOU WANT (Hatchette Book Group):“We started playing the show,” Greg recalled, “and a big hole opened up in front of me on the dance floor and bodies started falling into the hole.” The people who had been standing in front of the stage disappeared into the space where the floor had been.Bad Religion stopped playing and the people on the right side of the dance floor shouted in protest, unaware of what had hap- pened. But the screams of those who had fallen or were in danger of falling drowned them out. Liner Notes: Kris is honored to welcome her guest, music muse and Beatle ally, Jenny Boyd.  "Just be yourself." These were the worlds of George Harrison to his then sister-in-law, Jenny Boyd. And while the model turned rock wife, followed his advice, she had a rough go of it along the way. From being chased by Beatles fans enraged that she had access, to the Beatles' fateful trip to India; from San Francisco's peace-loving streets to the drug-fueled parties of the 70s and finally to her own path, Jenny's story is riveting, sad and wildly exciting. Join us for stories of her travels and observations of some of the most memorable moments in music history as they appear in her new memoire, Jennifer Juniper, a Journey Beyond the Muse. Jenny's book is available in paperback and Kindle edition. Visit Jenny on The Web  or follow her on Socials:Instagram @jenny_boydlevitt  - Facebook @JenniferJuniperauthor --We love to hear from you! Liner Notes: Welcome to the debut Track of Text, Prose & Rock N Roll! Kris is honored to welcome her first guest, longtime friend and former co-worker, Matt Pinfield! If you watched MTV in the mid 90's you know Matt Pinfield as the host of the seminal alternative music series, 120 Minutes. Matt knew everything about music because to hear him tell it - he's a music fan first and foremost. That hasn't changed. Matt is as genuine today as he was when Kris met him 25 years ago. So when it came time to choose the first guest for this podcast, Matt was the obvious choice. The night this podcast was recorded, it had been a long time since Kris & Matt had seen each other. They had so much to cover and little time to do it... what became of the Track was an honest and frank conversation about Matt's life in music, which he recently chronicled in his book, All These Things That I've Done: My Insane, Improbable Rock Life. Check out Matt's book, now available on paperback! Follow Matt on Socials: Instagram@MatthewPinfield - Twitter@MattPinfield...if you like what you hear, please subscribe, rate, comment, then tell a friend!Special Thanks to Glenn Pinfield, Austin Reading, Kristi Fuhrman, Jason Frankovitz, & Mike Bowman for contributing to this make this Track possible.--About the Podcast: ‘TEXT PROSE AND ROCK N ROLL'- is the only podcast dedicated to the written account of musicians.
