"I love for people to come when the pipes leak instead of when they burst." — Vonda TiedelWhy do so many couples wait years before finally seeking help? What actually happens in the therapy room, and what is the therapist really doing? Are there situations where couples therapy can do more harm than good?Couples therapy is one of the most misunderstood tools in marriage. People assume it means something's broken, that the therapist will pick a side, or that it's too late. None of that is true.In this episode, Kenna sits down with two trusted colleagues and fellow licensed marriage and family therapists, Ben Baker and Vonda Tiede, for an honest, behind-the-curtain conversation about what couples therapy actually looks like, who it's for, and what gets in the way of people starting sooner. They cover the myths that keep couples stuck, the difference between a disagreement and a full-blown fight, what "containment" really means in the therapy room, and the specific situations where couples therapy is actually contraindicated. They also share the one thing they each wish every couple knew before they ever walked through the door.Whether you're considering couples therapy, currently in it, or just curious what happens in that room, this episode will give you real answers, not vague reassurances.Chapters(00:00) - "Your marriage is my client"(00:28) - Welcome and guest introductions(02:14) - Highs and Hards(08:25) - Why couples therapy feels so mysterious(09:35) - How Ben and Vonda chose marriage and family therapy(14:01) - Individual therapy vs. couples therapy(18:38) - Myths and misconceptions therapists want to dispel(33:56) - When to come and when to wait(52:18) - The one thing each therapist wishes every couple knew(58:03) - Challenge by choice(01:00:27) - Closing prayerLinks and Resources:Martin Center for Integration - https://martincenterforintegration.comVonda Tiede, LMFT - https://www.vondatiede.com/Related episodes with Ben Baker: Men and Mental Health, Men in Relationships, Triangulation - https://martincenterforintegration.com/show-notes-70Related episodes with Vonda Tiede: Marital Intimacy, What Happens in Individual Therapy - https://martincenterforintegration.com/show-notes-21Support the showThank you for listening, and a very special thank you to our community of supporters!Join our email list and never miss an episode or an eventVisit us online at thiswholelifepodcast.com, and send us an email with your thoughts, questions, or ideas.Follow us on Instagram & FacebookInterested in more faith-filled mental health resources? "Being connected to your spouse in prayer, even when things are hard, maybe especially when things are hard, is one of the best ways to know that person." ~ Pat MilleaWhy do so many couples want to pray together but never actually do it?What do you do when you feel too vulnerable, too proud, or too far apart to pray?Is there a method that works, even for couples who have never prayed out loud together? In episode 100 of This Whole Life, Pat and Kenna Millea take on a topic that listeners have been asking for: how to actually pray together as a couple. Not in theory. Not with a polished formula. But honestly, practically, and in a way that fits real married life with kids, conflict, busy schedules, and the kind of exhaustion that makes even good intentions fall apart. They dig into why married prayer is so uniquely powerful, including what it means that no one knows your spouse like God does, and why that matters most when things are hard between you. They unpack the difference between rote prayer and spontaneous prayer, and why both have a place in a marriage. And they walk through a specific method of praying together, taught by a priest named Father Scott Traynor, that is accessible, intimate, and surprisingly doable, even for couples who feel completely out of their depth. Then, to mark the milestone of episode 100, they actually do it. Pat and Kenna pray the Traynor method together, on air, for real, in what may be the most vulnerable and honest moment the show has ever aired. This episode is for every couple who has wanted to pray together but did not know where to start.Chapters:(00:40) — Welcome and episode 100 celebration(01:47) — States trivia game(14:15) — Why married prayer matters(22:00) — The gifts of praying together as a couple(33:30) — Praying before conflict: the hardest and most humbling move(43:50) — Getting practical: how to start(46:50) — The Traynor Method explained(52:00) — Pat and Kenna pray the Traynor Method Links and Resources:The Parish as a School of Prayer by Father Scott TraynorSupport the showThank you for listening, and a very special thank you to our community of supporters!Visit us online at thiswholelifepodcast.com, and send us an email with your thoughts, questions, or ideas.Follow us on Instagram & FacebookInterested in more faith-filled mental health resources? Welcome back to Late Boomers! We're your hosts, Host Cathy Worthington and Merry Elkins. In this episode, we're thrilled to sit down with Tara Conahan, founder of Obsessionediquette.com, to unpack the world of Irish traditional music sessions and the universal lessons they offer about belonging, creativity, and venturing into new communities especially after 50.Whether you're a seasoned musician, a curious listener, or simply someone eager to embrace new experiences, this conversation is for you. Tara Connaghan joins us all the way from Donegal, Ireland, to share her wisdom on “session etiquette”—the unspoken social codes that help us connect and thrive, not only in music circles but everywhere in life.We dive into what makes music sessions in Ireland (and beyond) both inviting and intimidating, how newcomers can read a room and ease their anxiety, and why it's okay to be a beginner at any age. Tara Conahan highlights how etiquette isn't about rigid rules but about bringing positive, collaborative energy to any group setting. We also explore:The surprising origins and evolution of Irish music sessionsWhy it's normal to feel anxious joining an established group (and how to get past it)The role of elders in passing on music, wisdom, and confidenceListening as an underrated and essential way to participateHow to gracefully navigate awkward first encountersWhy real belonging means being valued and heardKey TakeawaysSession Etiquette is Universal: It applies not just to music, but to jobs, social circles, and any situation where you're joining something that existed before you (02:43).You're Not Alone in Feeling Anxious: Everyone from beginners to professionals faces uncertainty when entering new spaces. A little reconnaissance helps reduce the pressure (06:37).Reading the Room: Adjust your energy by thinking about how you'll affect others, not just how they'll affect you (10:12).Belonging is About Value: Authentic inclusion happens when everyone feels valued and heard (12:45).Start Small, Get Comfortable: Visit sessions a few times before joining in, and start with those that suit your skill level (18:10).It's Okay to Walk Away: If a group isn't welcoming, don't force it find a community where you feel genuine belonging (25:29).Music Connects Generations: Sessions can bring together everyone from young kids to elders, fostering intergenerational bonds and wisdom (21:35).Bring Music Into Your Life: Make a list of 10 songs or albums that shaped your life and revisit your own soundtrack (25:50).We invite you to reflect on your own life's soundtrack! Take a few minutes this week to list ten tracks, albums or genres that marked major chapters or memories for you. We're in our new "month of renewal" format. We're essentially exploring this question throughout the month... what if growth required less effort? This is an encore episode that helps us answer this question. Reminder that we'll be back with new episodes May 1, 2026. "Joyless urgency." Two words that probably just hit a little too close to home. In this episode, Henry Emmons, MD and Aimee Prasek, PhD dig into the Element of Fun — and why so many of us have so little of it. Drawing on the writing of Marilynne Robinson, the surprising decline of kids biking, and sobering research on social media's role in what researchers call problematic engagement, Henry and Aimee make a compelling case that fun isn't frivolous. It's foundational. And reclaiming it might be one of the most radical — and effective — things you can do right now. Aimee unpacks why those two words land so hard — and how Robinson's observation that this urgency serves "inscrutable ends that are utterly not our own" is the quiet crisis underneath hustle culture. [00:02:00] — The Question We're Too Busy to Answer We've all had that moment of clarity — what am I doing this for? — only to immediately rush past it into the next task. Aimee names the pattern: sometimes urgency is more comfortable than sitting with the possibility that all this striving might not actually be for us. [00:03:00] — Henry's Childhood Take on Boredom (Wisdom From the Old Wise Rat) Henry reflects on being a kid who dreaded boredom — and how that boredom turned out to be necessary. The inactivity between moments of play is what made the play so rich. Think of it like the pause between musical notes. [00:05:30] — Aimee's Dollar Ice Cream Cone Moment Aimee connects bike riding to early experiences of autonomy and confidence — biking to the corner store with a dollar felt like being a real adult. A sweet illustration of how unstructured play doubles as a training ground for real-world social skills, self-confidence, and approach behavior. [00:07:00] — Social Media and the Architecture of Joyless Urgency Here's where it gets science-y. Aimee connects the joyless urgency framework directly to how most social media platforms are designed — not to satisfy us, but to keep us in a loop of stimulation and momentary relief. The mechanics: activate anxiety, ease it briefly, activate again. Repeat. Sound familiar? [00:08:00] — Problematic Engagement: What the Research Says Aimee introduces the research concept of problematic engagement — used in studies on social media addiction and gambling — which describes the cycle of engaging with something that momentarily eases dis-ease but ultimately causes harm. Key finding: social anxiety is a primary driver, and these platforms are algorithmically built to exploit it. [00:09:30] — The Most Ironic Research Finding People who believe they have complete control over their social media use — who think they could stop at any time — actually show the most signs of problematic engagement. They're absorbing the most harm while feeling the least concerned about it. [00:10:00] — Dr. Samira Farivar Quote + What We're Up Against Aimee references research by Dr. Samira Farivar: "You can't action a problem you don't even know exists." The platform isn't incidental to the problem — it is the business model. We're not weak for falling into this loop. We're human, and the trap was engineered specifically for us. [00:11:30] — The Simple Truth About Adding More Fun Henry brings it home: adding more fun to life is theoretically simple. If we just slow down enough to let our awareness catch up, we'll almost naturally fill that space with something we enjoy. Kids don't need instructions for fun — and adults don't either, once we clear the noise. [00:13:00] — Listening to the Voice That Wants to Play Henry offers a quiet but urgent reminder: our inner wisdom needs to be heard. If we don't honor it, it either goes silent — or gets louder until we can't ignore it. The invitation is to pause, ask what am I doing?, and actually wait for an answer to surface. [00:14:00] — Play Is an Offensive Strategy Aimee closes the conversation with a reframe: fun and play aren't a retreat from the hard stuff in the world. They're a way of moving through it. Welcome to the Personal Development Trailblazers Podcast! In today's episode, we're talking about how to carry your grief well so you can move through it. Robert DelFave is a grief coach, podcaster, and author. He lost his dad at 15 and his mom at 26. For years, he carried that quietly—the way most people do—while building a career and a life that looked fine from the outside. What eventually changed everything was a conversation with someone who had actually been through real loss and didn't flinch. That moment became the foundation of everything he does now.Today, he runs DelFave Coaching, a one-on-one grief coaching practice built around the belief that grief isn't a problem to solve; it's something you learn to carry well. He is also finishing his first book, The Other Side of This, written specifically for grieving teenagers. He hosts the Unparented podcast and is building his practice alongside a full-time senior leadership role, which means everything he has built has been intentional, lean, and in the margins.Connect with Robert Here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/robertdelfavehttps://robertdelfave.com/Threads: @robertdelfavePodcast: Unparented — available on all major platformsGrab the freebie here: Not Alone (5-Day Audio Guide)https://robertdelfave.com/===================================If you enjoyed this episode, remember to hit the like button and subscribe. If you've ever sat in a meeting, been asked for your opinion, and immediately thought… "Who am I to speak up?" "They're going to find out I don't belong here." You're not alone. In this episode, we're talking about imposter syndrome — not just what it is, but what to actually do about it. Because I'm done with advice that sounds good but doesn't help you in real life… like on a Tuesday morning when you're about to walk into a client call and your confidence is nowhere to be found. This episode is packed with real, actionable steps you can start using today. Here's something to hold onto: 70% of people across every industry experience imposter syndrome. Maya Angelou felt it. Tom Hanks talked about it. Michelle Obama wrote about it. So if you've ever felt like you're one mistake away from being exposed — you're in very good company. And more importantly, there is a way through it. In This Episode, We Cover: • How to recognize imposter syndrome when it shows up • How to reframe the stories you're telling yourself • How to take action even when you don't feel ready • How to build confidence through consistent action • 12 practical steps to help you own your voice Resources: Are you a health coach in need of done-for-you content? Launch your podcast or get full podcast management services here: https://rachelafeldman.com/the-healthy-hustle-podcast-agency/ Tip #1: Name It Out Loud The next time that voice shows up, don't ignore it — name it. Say: "I'm experiencing imposter syndrome right now." When you label the emotion, you activate the rational part of your brain and shift from reaction to response. This isn't truth — it's a feeling. And feelings can be worked with. Tip #2: Remember You're Not Alone 70% of people experience this. That means the people sitting in your next Zoom call are likely feeling it too. You're not broken. You're growing. Tip #3: Keep a Win Journal Imposter syndrome has selective memory. It remembers your mistakes — and forgets your wins. Start tracking your wins weekly: • Solved a problem • Got a thank you message • Finished something hard This becomes your proof when your brain tries to tell you otherwise. Tip #4: Separate Feelings from Facts Ask yourself: Is this true… or does it just feel true? Your thoughts are convincing — but they're not always accurate. Challenge them. Tip #5: Embrace the Learning Curve Replace: "I don't belong here" With: "I haven't learned this yet." That one word changes everything. Discomfort doesn't mean you're in the wrong place — it means you're growing. Tip #6: Act First, Feel Confident Later Confidence doesn't come before action. It comes from action. Do it scared. Do it messy. Do it anyway. Tip #7: Share Before It's Perfect Perfectionism and imposter syndrome go hand in hand. Stop waiting for perfect. Share at 80%. Progress builds confidence — perfection delays it. Tip #8: Say Yes to One Stretch Opportunity Pick one thing this month that scares you. • Apply for something • Pitch yourself • Start the thing Growth happens when you stretch. Tip #9: Find a Mentor or Accountability Partner You don't have to do this alone. Mentors don't just give advice — they give permission. Accountability keeps you moving forward when doubt creeps in. Tip #10: Talk About It Imposter syndrome thrives in silence. Say it out loud. Most of the time, you'll hear: "Me too." Tip #11: Celebrate Others Without Comparing Someone else's success is not your failure. It's proof that it's possible. Practice celebrating others — it builds an abundance mindset. Tip #12: Create Your Evidence List Write down your top 5 real accomplishments. Keep them visible. When doubt shows up, read them out loud. Because the antidote to a lie is the truth. Final Thoughts You are not behind. You are not unqualified. You are not a fraud. You are growing. And everything you're feeling right now is part of becoming the person you're meant to be. If this episode resonated with you, share it with someone who needs it. And remember — you don't need to feel ready to take the next step. You just need to take it.
Feeling Like a Fraud, Homeschool Mom? Here's Why You're Not. Have you ever caught yourself thinking, “Am I really cut out for this?” Then you’re among the masses. Homeschooling is one of the most extraordinary things you can do for your kids, but it can also bring up a lot of self-doubt. You scroll past picture-perfect homeschool setups on Instagram or hear about families who are enacting their ideal Charlotte Mason schedule, and suddenly, you're questioning everything. So then, how to build confidence as a homeschool mom if these questions are your constant companions? Am I doing this right? Do I know enough? What if I'm not good enough? That voice? That's imposter syndrome creeping in. And I want you to know right now: you're not a fraud, and you are enough—just as you are. Let's unpack where that doubt comes from and how you can build confidence as a homeschool mom with authenticity, grace, and peace of mind. Prefer to listen? I recorded a full episode on this — press play above. What is Imposter Syndrome (and Why Does It Love Homeschool Moms)? Imposter syndrome is that feeling that you're a fraud like you're “winging it” and you don't really belong where you are. That voice says, “Who are you to be homeschooling? You're not a teacher. You don't know enough. You don't have the credentials.” It’s doubting your abilities, your expertise, and even your worth—all based on the idea that you don’t measure up. I hear this so often from homeschool moms—it’s a pervasive feeling, especially in the early years. And it was something Alicia, one of my coaching clients, really struggled with. Alicia's Story: Proof You're Not Alone. Alicia told me she'd use her last minutes of the day, replaying her kids' math lessons in her head, convinced she wasn't doing enough. “What if I'm ruining their education?” she asked through her wince. “What if I’m not setting them up the best I can for their adult life?” But what she couldn't see was how deeply her kids admired her determination. What she also couldn't see were their long-term stories unfolding and the lasting benefits they'd gain from this way of life. She also shared with me that she didn't feel capable of teaching her kids, particularly in areas like math and spelling. She told me, “I didn't think that I was able to teach my kids because I'm not great at math, and my spelling is a little bit off sometimes… so I don't want to teach because… I don't feel smart enough.” It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking that if we aren't capable of teaching every subject, we're not qualified to teach. But here’s the thing: certified teachers in the conventional education system aren’t trained to teach every subject. Yet, they are still expected to teach various classes they have no interest in and have to learn on the fly. https://youtu.be/Z-bVVjI467E?si=4HQ9vTewJ7UJE9Pi And that’s not all, when you spend enough time watching children really engage and learn, you’ll discover that your role in their education is more about facilitator and guide and less about direct teaching anyway. Being an effective homeschool mom is about being present, being flexible, and being a meaningful guide and facilitator for your kids. Alicia surprised me when she revealed this: “I got straight A's… all two years straight A's. I got one B and I cried.” Even though she had proven her academic success in school, she still questioned her ability to teach her own kids. This is a classic example of imposter syndrome at play. Her mind fixated on her perceived imperfections—like struggling with spelling—while completely disregarding all the evidence of her capability and success. Feeling the way Alicia did? Feeling the way Alicia did? You’re not doing it wrong — you just haven’t deschooled yet. The Deschool Your Homeschool Checklist is your free reset button. It’s a simple, practical guide to help you step back from school-y mindsets, reconnect with how your child actually learns, and create space for curiosity, calm, and connection — so you can build a homeschool that fits your real life, not a replica of the system you left behind. Download it free — the link is below. Yes, I’m Ready to Deschool 3 Powerful Shifts: How to Build Confidence as a Homeschool Mom When Alicia began to realize that her doubts were based on limiting beliefs, things began to shift. She had already achieved great things in her life—things like earning a spot in a coveted summer mentorship at a leading corporation. I asked her, “You earned this mentorship after you wrote an essay of your thoughts, and you also don't think you can homeschool?” She began to see it: she had the capacity. Alicia stopped focusing on her perceived weaknesses and leaned into the strengths that made her uniquely qualified to homeschool them. She embraced her role as a guide and supporter, letting go of the need to be all-knowledgable in every subject and researched various things alongside her kids. Instead of worrying about not being “smart enough” for math or spelling, Alicia shifted her perspective. She used resources that she enjoyed so she could learn too, showing them that education is a lifelong journey. Her willingness to admit when she didn't know something—and then work with her children to find the answers—created an environment of curiosity and mutual growth. More importantly, Alicia's newfound confidence gave her the ability to focus on her kids' individual needs. She became more present during their lessons, more patient with their struggles, and more intentional about fostering their strengths. By letting go of the fear of not measuring up, she modeled resilience and self-acceptance for her children, showing them the power of trusting in yourself and your abilities. That’s why building confidence as a homeschool mom isn’t about knowing everything or being perfect — it’s about trusting yourself, leaning into your strengths, and releasing the schooled mindset that’s been quietly running in the background. And that starts with one practical step. The Deschool Your Homeschool Action Plan gives you a clear, grounded path to do exactly that — move from second-guessing everything to building a homeschool that actually fits your family. No recreating school at home. No wondering if you’re doing it wrong. Just a real plan, built around how your child actually learns. It thrives when we focus on what we're not good at, rather than celebrating all that we bring to the table. The first step in overcoming it is acknowledging that you are already doing incredible things. So, let me ask you: What if you started to recognize that your unique perspective, the love and care you bring to homeschooling, and your commitment to your children’s growth are more valuable than any formal training? What if you gave yourself permission to say, “I am enough. I am capable. I don't need a piece of paper to prove my worth”? This episode is part of our 2025 series, The 1% Pivot — because small shifts in how you lead yourself create the biggest changes in your homeschool. You don't need anyone's approval but your own. "The love of Christ was the magnetic force that really drew us together."~ Debbie HerbeckWhat does it actually take to keep Christ at the center of a marriage through decades of real life? What do you do when one spouse is further ahead in faith than the other? How do you build a family culture that passes faith down to the next generation? In episode 98 of This Whole Life, Pat and Kenna welcome Peter and Debbie Herbeck, a couple with nearly 40 years of marriage, four children, and 12 grandchildren. Their story is anything but ordinary. Debbie grew up Jewish, came to faith at the University of Michigan, and paid a real price to follow Jesus. Peter came from a Catholic family shaped by both great love and the wounds of an alcoholic home. When they met, they were both already fully committed to the Lord individually, before they ever considered committing to each other. What followed was a marriage built not on ideal circumstances, but on a shared decision to put Jesus first, even when it was hard, messy, and costly. In this conversation, Peter and Debbie share the practical rhythms that kept their marriage rooted through busy seasons of parenting and ministry, what they say to couples where one spouse simply isn't on the same page in faith, and how they built a culture of honor in their home that their grandchildren are now carrying forward. This is the kind of wisdom that only comes from decades of saying yes to the Lord together.Peter Herbeck is the Vice President and Director of Missions for Renewal Ministries. Debbie Herbeck is the founder and executive director of Be Love Revolution and Pine Hills Girls Camp, and a speaker whose journey from Judaism to the Catholic faith has inspired thousands. Welcome to the Leading Edge in Emotionally Focused Therapy, hosted by Drs. James Hawkins, Ph.D., LPC, and Ryan Rana, Ph.D., LMFT, LPC—Renowned ICEEFT Therapists, Supervisors, and Trainers. We're thrilled to have you with us. We believe this podcast, a valuable resource, will empower you to push the boundaries in your work, helping individuals and couples connect more deeply with themselves and each other. In this episode of Push the Leading Edge, Dr. James Hawkins (Doc Hawk) and Dr. Ryan Rana unpack what it actually looks and feels like when a couple reaches the end of Stage 2 in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). They move beyond theory and manuals into the lived, embodied reality: couples who can stay in the emotional “fire,” face their deepest shame and pain, and still reach for each other. Using vivid metaphors—from Navy SEAL training, battle buddies, and swim buddies, to military deployments and “embrace the suck”—they illustrate how Stage 2 work transforms not just the relationship, but each partner's internal sense of self and safety. Top 10 Takeaways from This Episode End of Stage 2 = Installed Positive Cycle You know you're at the end of Stage 2 when couples can see, use, and stay in a positive cycle on their own. The negative cycle isn't “gone,” but they can repair it reliably and return to connection. It's Not About Trying, It's About Training Stage 2 is like military training: repeated, high‑pressure enactments (often ~30+ deep enactments across Stage 2) build automatic, embodied responses, not just cognitive insight. When the “bricks clack” (the trigger of the negative cycle), their bodies now know what to do. Caregiving System Comes Online A key marker of Stage 2 completion is that each partner's caregiving system is active and available. Partners start pre‑emptively making space for the other's pain, even before a clear signal is sent, and can say, in effect, “I know this might be hard for you, and I'm here.” “I Must Be Willing to Know Me to Be Known by You” Borrowing from Leanne Campbell, James highlights that clients must be willing to know themselves—all the versions of self—for true intimacy. By end of Stage 2, clients are less afraid of their inner world; they befriend previously shame-filled parts and bring them into the relationship. Both Partners Can Go Deep and Offer A.R.E. True Stage 2 completion means both partners can: Go deep into vulnerability without getting stuck in blame or avoidance Offer A.R.E. (Accessibility, Responsiveness, Engagement) as caregivers It's not enough for just one partner to do deep work; dyadic reciprocity is crucial. From “Fix Me” to “Be With Me” A major shift is from “please fix me or fix this” to “be with me in this.” Therapists should mark not only outcomes but effort and presence: “Look how you stayed with your partner for 30 minutes in the basement of their pain without trying to fix it.” Confidence and Relational Resilience Grow Couples leave Stage 2 with a felt sense of, “We can do this.” They have experiential proof that under pressure they can rappel into the basement of pain, stay present, and emerge together—building relational resilience, not just symptom relief. Secure Bonds Are Simple but Not Easy Secure bonds aren't conceptually complicated: Show up Stay present Respond vulnerably and reliably The hard part is slowing down when the body wants to speed up and remaining vulnerably present in discomfort, not learning 50 relationship tricks. Battle Buddies and Swim Buddies: You're Not Alone in the Fire End of Stage 2 means each partner has a “battle buddy” / “swim buddy” / “wingman”—someone who will go into the fire with them, not just cheer from a distance. You cannot become a battle buddy without fire; Stage 2 requires going into pain, not just building safety around it. Therapists Must Mark and Install Key Moments A big part of the therapist's role is to slow down, mark, and install these turning points: Naming the risk Naming the caregiving response Naming the resilience and mutual effort This helps clients encode and remember how they did it, so they can find their way back outside of the session. We aim to equip therapists with practical tools and encouragement for addressing relational distress. “The graces of My mercy are drawn by means of one vessel only, and that is — trust. The more a soul trusts, the more it will receive.” ~ Jesus, to St. Faustina- Why is it so hard to trust God?- What does it mean to say “yes” when life doesn't make sense?- How do we trust God in suffering, uncertainty, and silence? In episode 97 of This Whole Life, Kenna and Pat are joined by Sister Faustina Maria Pia, S.V. of the Sisters of Life to explore one of the most important and challenging aspects of the spiritual life: trust.Drawing from her personal story, Sister Faustina shares how a season of suffering and spiritual dryness led to a profound encounter with Jesus that changed everything. In that moment, she realized that trust is not about understanding our circumstances, but about entrusting ourselves to a Person.Together, they unpack the deeper meaning of trust, the fear of vulnerability, and the struggle to believe that we are truly loved. The conversation also explores how trust impacts our relationships, our prayer life, and our ability to live fully in the present moment.Whether you are in a season of clarity or confusion, this episode offers a powerful invitation to stop striving for control and begin surrendering to the love of God.Chapters (01:30) - Introduction and welcome (06:30) - Highs & Hards: life lately (10:30) - Introducing the topic of trust (18:45) - Sister Faustina's background and vocation story (27:30) - Encounter with Jesus in suffering (33:30) - Writing the Litany of Trust (40:00) - Why vulnerability and trust are difficult (48:00) - Trusting God vs trusting others (55:30) - Living in the present moment with God (01:01:30) - Challenge By Choice (01:03:00) - The Litany of Trust (prayer)Links and Resources:Litany of Trust – Sister Faustina Maria Piahttps://sistersoflife.org/litany-of-trust/Jesus, I Trust in You: A 30-Day Retreat with the Litany of Trusthttps://stpaulcenter.com/store/jesus-i-trust-in-you-a-30-day-personal-retreat-with-the-litany-of-trustSisters of Lifehttps://sistersoflife.org/This Whole Life Podcast Website https://thiswholelifepodcast.comSupport the showThank you for listening, and a very special thank you to our community of supporters!Visit us online at thiswholelifepodcast.com, and send us an email with your thoughts, questions, or ideas.Follow us on Instagram & FacebookInterested in more faith-filled mental health resources? I am nervous posting this podcast…as this was not the episode I planned to release. We spend our lives trying to stay put together and neat. Keeping our hurt hidden and our smiles big. This podcast shows a very different side of me. A side of Heidi that has real insecurities that run deep. A side of Heidi that feels pain and actually does care what others think about her even when she says she doesn't.While the strong Heidi is me…this is also me, and it's not easy to share.Today, you are witnessing a real life hormonal meltdown. What was supposed to be an informational conversation turned into something very different...an unfiltered conversation I'm still shocked I'm allowing the world to see.In this episode, I open up about the emotional toll of shifting hormones, irregular cycles, feeling overwhelmed by life, work, motherhood, pressure, aging, and the weight so many women silently carry. I also share why this episode was so hard for me to put out into the world...and why I decided to share it anyway. The truth is, the episodes that feel the hardest to release are often the ones that make the biggest impact. So if you've been feeling messy, emotional, stretched thin, less like yourself, or just plain alone in this season...this one is for you.And if you love someone who's walking through hormonal changes, this episode might help you understand her a little better too.You are not broken. You are not crazy. And you are definitely not alone. We talk about:What it feels like to hit your emotional limit The pressure of being the one who always has the answersHormones, perimenopause, and identity shifts no one prepares you forThe grief of feeling like your best years are behind youBeing judged as a woman and as a mother, no matter what you doThe gap between how life looks and how it actually feelsThis one is part life update, part emotional dump, part honest reminder that even the strong ones have days where they fall apart. And maybe that's not a bad thing.Want a community of women going through a similar phase as you? This week, authorities in New Mexico are continuing their investigation into the disappearance of retired U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. William "Neil" McCasland, and as the investigation enters its third week, officials say there have been no confirmed sightings of McCasland and few significant leads regarding his whereabouts. McCasland, 68, is a former commander of the Air Force Research Laboratory whose career placed him at the center of some of the U.S. military's most sensitive science and technology programs. However, it was the missing official's brief associations with the rock guitarist Tom DeLonge beginning in 2016 that led to widespread speculations within the UFO community about what McCasland may have known about some of America's most intriguing secrets. This week on The Micah Hanks Program, we examine what is currently known about McCasland's strange disappearance, as well as the significance of his past work in government involving oversight of America's most sensitive Special Access Programs. “Even in moments of human discouragement, the consciousness that I was fulfilling God's will in all that happened to me would serve to dispel all doubt and desolation.” ~ Fr. Walter CiszekHow can we trust God when life feels uncertain or painful? What does it really mean to surrender our will to God?How do we remain faithful when we face discouragement or suffering? In episode 96 of This Whole Life, Kenna, Pat, and Fr. Nathan conclude their Lenten book study on He Leadeth Me by Fr. Walter Ciszek. In this final installment, they reflect on the closing chapters of Ciszek's powerful spiritual memoir and the profound lessons he learned while enduring years of imprisonment and forced labor in the Soviet Union. The conversation explores the mystery of divine providence and what it means to trust that God is present even in suffering, confusion, and discouragement. Drawing from Ciszek's witness, they discuss surrendering control, discerning God's will in everyday life, and learning to see hardships not as meaningless suffering but as opportunities to grow in faith and dependence on God.With humor, honesty, and thoughtful reflection, the hosts unpack the wisdom of a man who discovered that true freedom does not come from escaping suffering, but from trusting completely in God's providence. Join the conversation as they wrap up this Lenten journey and reflect on how Fr. Ciszek's insights can transform the way we live our daily lives.Chapters00:00 – Opening Quote and Introduction01:30 – Wrapping up the Lenten book study07:15 – The theme of divine providence in He Leadeth Me18:40 – Trusting God during discouragement and suffering31:20 – Learning to surrender control to God's will43:50 – Freedom through dependence on God52:30 – Final reflections on Fr. “We were subjected to conditions that were deplorable, even subhuman, and yet I was delighted simply to be with people once again.” ~ Fr. Walter CiszekWhy do we long so deeply for human connection? They also reflect on the extraordinary lengths priests went to celebrate the Mass in secret and how Ciszek's faith transformed even the harsh realities of the labor camp into opportunities for grace. If you feel lonely even when you're not alone, this episode will help you understand why. In The Loneliness of Covert Narcissism: Why You Feel Invisible Even When You're Not Alone, we explore emotional invisibility, the quiet isolation that happens in covert narcissistic relationships, and why being truly seen can feel so rare—and so deeply relieving. Many survivors describe the loneliest place as sitting beside their partner, realizing they are not truly known. In this episode, we talk about why your words may have never landed, why small moments—like circular arguments, silent treatments, or everyday interactions—can leave you questioning your reality, and why hearing someone else say “I thought I was the only one” can bring such powerful relief.
