More than a decade ago, the film Her imagined a love story between a human and an artificial intelligence. Today, it no longer feels like fiction. In this special live taping of Where Should We Begin? from the Vox Media Stage at SXSW, Esther Perel is joined by Academy Award–winning filmmaker Spike Jonze to explore what happens when technology captures our affection. Drawing on a recent therapy session on the podcast with a man in a romantic relationship with his AI companion, Esther brings the audience into a deeply human story—one that raises new questions about intimacy, attachment, the state of "love," and what it means to feel seen. What happens when the being that understands you best isn't a human being? As AI moves closer into our emotional lives, this conversation invites us to consider not just what technology can do, but what it awakens within us. Producer's Note: When our anonymous guests do a session with Esther for the podcast, it is an act of generosity for everyone who listens. These sessions are meant not only to support the people in the room with Esther, but all of us who learn from their stories. Our stories have many chapters, and what you hear is just one moment in someone's journey. So even though the sessions are anonymous, please remember that real people are behind them and they may be reading your comments. Also, please join me on Entre Nous, my new home on Substack for anyone who wants to live, love, and work with more connection and imagination. "Raising money off frothy numbers to sugarcoat the rotten apple is what built this town.” That's according to Duncan Park, the protagonist of "The Audacity," a new dark comedy from AMC about tech CEOs and their relationships with their families, therapists and enablers. Live from SXSW, Kara spoke with executive producer and showrunner Jonathan Glatzer ("Succession," "Bad Sisters," "Better Call Saul"), star Billy Magnussen, and executive producer Gina Mingacci ("Killing Eve," "Orphan Black"). The series follows Duncan, an ambitious, arrogant data-mining CEO determined to join Silicon Valley's billionaire elite, and holds up a mirror to the greed and ego shaping modern tech culture. They discuss how tech's obsession with disruption and data has come at the cost of privacy and real human connection. While "The Audacity" is a sharp satire, it also finds surprising humanity in even the most unlikable tech bros — and even made Kara feel empathy for them, despite her best intentions. Questions? For our latest episode, we are live at SXSW and our Founder and President, Jennifer Risi, caught up with Vox Media's Astead Herndon who is an editorial director and frequent host of outlet's Today, Explained podcast. Vivian sat down live at SXSW with California Governor Gavin Newsom for a candid conversation about why everything feels so expensive right now, how the government is and isn't showing up for everyday Americans, and what it will actually take to close the wealth gap. In this episode, you'll learn: How Governor Newsom's upbringing between two very different worlds — his mom working multiple jobs and his dad's connections to the Getty family — shaped the way he thinks about wealth, power, and opportunity, and what his experience as a small business owner taught him about the difference between running a company and running a government. The biggest financial obstacles standing between Americans and a better quality of life today, why generational wealth and the housing crisis sit at the center of the problem, and what policy changes could actually move the needle structurally. How to think about the role of government in your personal finances, what resources already exist that most people aren't taking advantage of, and what Governor Newsom believes is flying under the radar that every American should be paying attention to right now. What Governor Newsom would do if he could pass one economic policy tomorrow with zero opposition, whether AI will make inequality worse before it gets better, and — because Vivian had to ask — what's actually next for Gavin Newsom. In this episode of Business Brain, we get grounded by going back to basics—because even seasoned entrepreneurs forget how powerful the fundamentals can be. Inspired by the story of the Cornbread Mafia highlighted at SXSW, we explore how simple ideas, executed well, can scale into something massive. You're reminded that success isn't always about chasing the next shiny tactic—it's about mastering what already works and leaning into it to build your Charmed Life. We also dig into the importance of sweating the small stuff—yes, even something as simple as “tying your shoes.” That means documenting your processes, refining the details, and creating repeatable systems that keep your business running smoothly. In this episode of Business Brain, we reinforce that clarity comes from simplicity, and growth comes from consistency. When you focus on the basics and execute with intention, you create momentum that compounds over time. 00:00:00 Business Brain – The Entrepreneurs' Podcast #736 for Wednesday, March 18, 2026 March 18th: Awkward Moments Day 00:02:47 REVIEW: Cornbread Mafia @ SXSW Sponsor 00:11:16 SPONSOR: Fundera from NerdWallet – A free, easy-to-use platform that lets you compare real financing offers from trusted lenders — all in one place. In this solo episode, I get candid. I open up about losing my father in January, what grief looks like when you can't afford to stop moving, and the complicated truth about showing up anyway — to the meeting, to the festival, to the mic. I also dig into eight listener questions from the year-end survey, covering: how I select guests, whether I'm still producing, how independent producers can find financing outside traditional models, tips for batching scenes on a micro-budget shoot, how to pitch yourself for freelance producing opportunities, where to actually network, how to work festivals like Sundance and SXSW, and how to define and achieve your goals in a season of uncertainty. Raw, practical, and very real... Thanks for doing this life thing with me!
Filmmaker John Valley joins In the Room to share his journey from a small town in Iowa to premiering films at SXSW, and what it really takes to build a career in independent film.He breaks down the making of The Pizzagate Massacre, how the film went from festival rejection to viral controversy, and how self-distribution, SEO, and timing changed everything. The conversation also dives into his latest project, American Dollhouse, a psychological horror film, along with lessons on raising money, navigating the industry without connections, and creating work that actually gets seen. This episode is an honest look at indie filmmaking, creative risk, and what happens when you stop waiting for permission and make the film anyway.
One of the greatest to ever do it, Steven Spielberg was at SXSW talking about Disclosure Day and talked about why he decided to do a UFO movie 50 years after Close Encounters. After driving all the way from Las Vegas, they sit down at the São Paulo House to record a special live episode as the city fills with creators, entrepreneurs, and storytellers from around the world.Fresh off the road, the two catch up on the journey to Austin, the energy of SXSW, and what it means to be part of one of the biggest weeks in podcasting. Recorded live at the Fairmont Austin during SXSW, Joe Pardavila sits down with leadership advisor and author Tony Martignetti just moments after his first SXSW talk. The conversation explores the experience of speaking on one of the world's most influential stages and the deeper ideas behind Tony's upcoming book, Illuminating Hidden Brilliance.Tony has spent more than three decades working across biotech, high tech, and leadership development, helping individuals and organizations reconnect with what he calls their hidden brilliance. In this conversation, he explains why many leaders appear successful on the outside while feeling numb on the inside, and how reconnecting with forgotten parts of ourselves can restore creativity, purpose, and stronger leadership.Joe and Tony discuss the journey that led Tony from a career in finance and strategy to becoming a leadership coach and author. They explore the idea of “flashpoint” moments that reshape how people see themselves, the courage required to bring your full identity into your work, and why teams become more innovative when people share the passions they keep outside the office. The conversation also tackles practical leadership questions:• Why many successful leaders feel stuck or disengaged• How organizations overlook the potential inside their own teams• The role of compassionate accountability in strong leadership• Why culture emerges from behavior rather than slogans• How AI and new workplace dynamics might reshape how people contributeTony shares stories from his work with innovation teams, explains how personal passions can spark new ideas at work, and argues that organizations thrive when leaders create space for people to bring their full selves to the table. At its core, this episode asks a simple but powerful question: What brilliance are we leaving behind when we separate who we are from the work we do?Tony's new book, Illuminating Hidden Brilliance, arrives this fall and offers a roadmap for individuals and teams who want to reconnect with their deeper potential.
AI is reshaping industries and jobs faster than most of us can keep up. But futurist Amy Webb argues we have more control over what lies ahead than we might think. In today's episode, Jessi Hempel sits down with Amy, founder and CEO of the Future Today Strategy Group and one of the world's leading experts on strategic foresight. For nearly two decades, Amy's annual tech trends report has helped leaders understand what's coming next, and what to do about it. Amy and Jessi explore the concept of creative destruction—the economic force that disrupts old systems to make room for new ones—and what today's wave of AI-driven change means for workers, leaders, and organizations. Amy and Jessi discuss: What creative destruction really means, and why we should embrace it How AI and emerging technologies are transforming industries faster than many leaders expect How leaders can strategically prepare for trends and crises, rather than merely reacting to them Why organizations need to invest in foresight and long-term thinking How individuals can position themselves to adapt and thrive during rapid transformation Follow Amy Webb and Jessi Hempel on LinkedIn Learn more about The Future Today Strategy Group Watch Amy's 2026 SXSW talk We will be launching the Hello Monday book club soon. Micaela Wittman joins the sibs to talk Clairevoyant, the indie film that started it all for her. Micaela breaks down Claire, a well-meaning, slightly privileged, deeply flawed woman who keeps getting taken advantage of by the corrupt spiritual world around her (neutral color palettes bring you closer to god, apparently). They get into Earl's hilariously detached off-camera energy, 12 hours of improv, and why the film earns its compassion for a character. Plus, Micaela reflects on her character in the SXSW premiering Perfect — the grounded, no-nonsense counterweight to Kai (Ashley Moore)'s beautiful chaos. Director Juliane Dressner and star Miriam Shor join the sibs to talk My NDA, a film that cuts to the heart of how non-disclosure agreements are weaponized against the very people they claim to protect. They dig into the legal and human cost of signing away your voice — and why forcing someone to choose between justice and silence is no different than any other form of coercion. Johnny Mac delivers a play-by-play Oscars recap focused on Conan O'Brien's hosting and monologue, praising the show's production, the movie-referencing cold open, and specific jokes (including political bits, a rule-of-three example, and a serious statement about global artistry), plus notes on Matt Berry announcing from London and Jimmy Kimmel's cameo. He says he likes letting non-star winners speak and observes hosts tend to disappear later in the broadcast, then teases covering the second half on Tuesday. He reports Bert Kreischer's tour bus caught fire on I-94 after a tire blowout, with everyone safe but belongings lost. Directors Brea Grant, Chelsea Stardust, and Ed Dougherty join actors Rob Huebel, Barbara Crampton, and Christopher Rodriguez Marquette to talk Grind, a horror-satire about the soul-crushing, bathroom-break-denying, time-loop nightmare of gig economy labor. They dig into how horror lets you take something already happening in the world and make it bigger to make a point, why the billionaire villains still get to be human, and how a rotating room, a matte painter who worked on Return of the Jedi, and a free warehouse in K-Town add up to a high production value indie that punches way above its weight. SXSW legend, director Katie Aselton drops in to talk Their Town, the family project she made starring Ora Duplass and Chosen Jacobs. Katie and writer Marc Duplass set out to make a teen film that respects its audience — one where platonic relationships carry just as much weight as romantic ones, and where being truly seen by another person for the first time is the whole point. They dig into what it's like to work with young talent, how Chosen ended up writing and performing the film's closing song with Ora (recorded between takes), and the beautifully repeat collaboration with visionary DP Sara Whelden. Writer-actor Dalia Rooni, stars Medalion Rahimi and Layla Mohammidi, and director Lauren Noll talk Same Same But Different, a comedy about three Iranian women on a weekend trip to Cape Cod. They dig into the beauty and joy of portraying smart, funny, and complex women in this sharp and character-driven film that explores what it means to let identity be a beautiful piece of the puzzle rather than the whole conflict. Plus: Farsi, dialect coaches, aunties, nepotism, squatting, and drumming legend Jess Bowen auditioning for the role of hot girl. Follow all of Friday Night Movie's award-winning SXSW Coverage. My guests on this episode are part of a pilot for a potential new series called “Woodstockers”. The show will have its world premiere at SxSW beginning today, Saturday, March 14. On this episode is the show runner and cast members Corbin Bernsen (“LA Law”, “My Friends and Neighbors), director Oliver Bernsen and cast member, and very recent podcast guest, Stephen Tobolowsky (“Groundhog Day”, “Memento”). https://youtu.be/eIH0MpklhHQ In the summer of ’69, Lenny Baker and his best friend Calvin Reddick went to Woodstock. What they witnessed there changed their lives, so much so that they decided to never go home again. Armed with a vision of a new path forward, they built a life in upstate New York alongside Rebecca and Lizzy, two women they met at the festival and married soon after. Decades of willful detachment followed, but every trip has its comedown. Now, more than half a century later and with his marriage up in smoke, Lenny is forced to face a hard truth: the better world they once envisioned never quite arrived… and if it ever does, he won’t be around to see it. Calvin’s sudden death makes that painfully clear.
Brice Budke (President) and Zeek Earl (Executive Creative Director) run two Seattle studios: Shep, a video agency that works with tech companies like Amazon and Microsoft, and Packrat, a creative studio that specializes in miniature worlds, handmade sets, and retro creative projects. You might know Packrat's work from the epic and widely watched 2025 Seahawks schedule release video, which won a Gold Clio. They also made Prospect, an indie sci-fi film that premiered at SXSW in 2018 with Pedro Pascal and Sophie Thatcher. GeekWire met them last fall on the set of a stop-motion shoot for Kiro, an AI-powered agentic software development tool from Amazon Web Services. Check out the video they made from that shoot here. On this episode, Brice and Zeek discuss how AI is transforming their work — from photorealistic storyboarding to stop-motion animation filled in by AI-generated frames — and what still requires human creativity, taste, and intuition. Plus: the psychology of working with "infinite tools," why AI doesn't always save money, and the GeekWire Trivia Challenge. Director Millicent Hailes joins the sibs alongside stars Ashley Moore, Lío Mehiel, and Micaela Wittman to dig into their sun-soaked indie Perfect. The ensemble unpacks how a summer-camp shoot on the side of a California road gave birth to the film's lived-in community, why Kai (wave) and Sonny (sunshine) are names that were always destined to find each other, and what it means to reach your hand out to a stranger. They also get into the film's bold portrayal of Julia Fox as a pregnant person with full desires of her own. First, we have a few current events items that hit our skeptical radar -- and a Bigfoot bombshell drops at SXSW film festival! (For more on that, see Ben's just-released piece in Skeptical Inquirer online, "Documentary's Devastating Bigfoot Debunking." Then Leo Igwe joins us during his visit to the U.S., and he shares progress and challenges facing his organization, Advocacy 4 Alleged Witches. Leo is a stalwart skeptic and champion of rational thought, and his heroic work in Africa puts him in danger on many fronts. He lays out aspects of cultural and economic life in parts of Africa that make it difficult for victims to fight accusations of witchcraft. And he talks about how partnering with other organizations and simply continuing to fight for the right cause -- even without a clear path to success -- drives him day in, day out.

A divorced woman calls Esther to untangle a new love that brings both exhilaration and heartache. She is in a relationship with a married man whose marriage is ethically non-monogamous and finds herself caught between desire, jealousy and the longing to feel chosen. As the conversation unfolds, buried childhood wounds, attachment patterns, and an inherited inner critic rise to the surface. They explore how old stories shape present love and what it might mean to rewrite the story she tells herself about love. Esther Callings are a one time, 45-60 minute interventional phone call with Esther. They are edited for time, clarity, and anonymity. If you have a question you would like to talk through with Esther, send a voice memo to producer@estherperel.com.
