Nicholas Frank and William Sarradet discuss recent books and publications about art, made by artists, or unexpectedly connected to art. “Did you know that Frederic Remington was a writer? He was possibly more well-known, in his time, as a writer. There was a particular form of adventure journalism that he took on as a profession, and his illustrations for his writings were probably his best-known art at the time.” See related readings here: https://glasstire.com/2026/02/21/art-dirt-what-were-reading/ Today's podcast is sponsored in part by the Thin Line Fest, which returns to downtown Denton March 18 to 22, bringing together documentary film, world-class photography, and live music in one immersive, multiday experience. This year's festival includes artists Byrd Williams IV, Arthur Fields, and Angilee Wilkerson, alongside work by 80 other photographers across five galleries. The film program features documentaries from major festivals, including "American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez," which won the Audience Award at Sundance, and "Black Zombie," which premieres at this year's SXSW. It also features live musical performances by artists like Luna Luna and the Greyhounds, plus many more acts across intimate venues in Denton's walkable downtown. Register for free at thinline.us. Today's podcast is also sponsored by Del Mar College, which is presenting the "60th CAIN National" exhibition. This year's show was juried by Tabitha Whitley, a Brooklyn-based painter and printmaker. The show features 55 works of art from artists across 18 states. Del Mar College purchased five artworks from the exhibition for its permanent collection. See the exhibition Mondays through Fridays from now until April 17, 2026. Learn more by visiting delmar.edu/gallery.
Hackathons are back in the Portland tech community — and they're coming back with an AI-shaped vengeance. On February 28, you've got two legit options: the OpenClaw Global Unhackathon with AI Tinkers Portland (a no-prizes, heads-down “ship code” session built around OpenClaw/Clawbot energy), and a Claude Code hackathon hosted by AJ Green + the AI Collective with Anthropic in the mix. Plus: Scott Hanselman's delightfully retro Tiny Tool Town is giving big GeoCities/webring vibes for all your vibe-coded creations, and Brittany Alec drops a brutally honest, necessary post about the emotional tension developers are feeling in the AI era. And in “secrets,” I talk founder pitches, a Eugene fireside chat, and why I'm getting back to basics: writing the blog, promoting what you're building, and letting the other half-assed “maybe I should run everything” ideas take a seat.TIMESTAMPS0:00 Hackathons are back (why this matters in Portland)1:15 OpenClaw Global “Unhackathon” (AI Tinkers Portland)3:05 The Clawbot → “Moltbot” → OpenClaw naming drama recap5:05 What the OpenClaw event actually is (heads-down shipping, no demos/prizes)9:05 Claude Code Hackathon (Anthropic / AI Collective w/ AJ Green)12:40 Scott Hanselman's Tiny Tool Town (showcase of vibe-coded tiny tools)14:50 Developer Brittany Ellich's honest post on AI + dev anxiety16:10 SecretsLINKSOpenClaw Global Unhackathon (AI Tinkerers Portland) https://www.meetup.com/ai-tinkerers-portland-or/Claude Code Meetup Portlandhttps://luma.com/u55aqt1t Tiny Tool Townhttps://www.tinytooltown.com/ Hanselminutes https://hanselminutes.com/ Vibes DIYhttps://vibes.diy/Brittany Ellich's post you highlighted about the dev emotional tension in the AI era https://brittanyellich.com/living-in-the-inflection-point Overcommitted Podcast https://overcommitted.dev/ FIND RICK TUROCZY ON THE INTERNET AT…- https://patreon.com/turoczy- https://linkedin.com/in/turoczy- Portland Oregon startup news on Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/portland-oregon-startup-news-silicon-florist/id1711294699- Portland Oregon startup news Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/2cmLDH8wrPdNMS2qtTnhcy?si=H627wrGOTvStxxKWRlRGLQ- Startup Stories on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/1Tk7bbzaNYowGouI9ucKC3- Startup Stories on Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/startup-stories-with-silicon-florist/id1849468494- The Long Con on Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-long-con/id1810923457- The Long Con on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/48oglyT5JNKxVH5lnWTYKA- https://bsky.app/profile/turoczy.bsky.social- https://siliconflorist.substack.com/- https://pdxslack.comABOUT SILICON FLORIST ----------For nearly two decades, Rick Turoczy has published Silicon Florist, a blog, newsletter, and podcast that covers entrepreneurs, founders, startups, entrepreneurship, tech, news, and events in the Portland, Oregon, startup community. Can an algorithm truly care for a patient? As we move further into 2026, the healthcare industry is being flooded with AI tools promising to automate everything from charting to triage. But there's a massive problem: most of these tools are being built by engineers who have never spent a 12-hour shift on a med-surg floor. In this high-stakes conversation, Rebecca Love, RN, joins us to explain why the "Nursing Voice" is the most valuable asset in the 2026 tech landscape. We discuss the recent surge in ambient clinical scribes and the ethical "black boxes" of agentic AI—and why tech giants are destined to fail if they don't put nurses at the center of the development loop. This episode is a banger! Please like, follow and SUBSCRIBE! What You'll Learn in This Episode: The Missing Link in Innovation: Why tech companies are struggling to achieve ROI because they lack the "frontline intuition" only a nurse provides. The 2026 AI Reality Check: A look at the current trends, from Google's Nurse Handoff tools to the 18% error rate recently found in some AI-generated discharge summaries. Ethics of the "Black Box": How nurses serve as the ultimate "Human-in-the-Loop" to prevent algorithmic bias and hallucinations from reaching the patient. Why Big Tech Can't "Do It Right" Alone: The specific clinical nuances—like reading a patient's non-verbal cues or navigating family dynamics—that cannot be coded into a Large Language Model (LLM). On Weds, February 18th Live Episode #651 of the New Media Show, Rob Greenlee, Host, 2017 Podcast Hall of Famer and CEO of Trust Factor Lab at https://RobGreenlee.com, and James Cridland, Editor, https://Podnews.net and 2026 Podcast Hall of Famer discuss Apple's announcement of a new and improved video podcast experience in the Apple Podcasts app and what it changes technically and strategically heading into 2026. They explain how video was previously active in Apple Podcasts but was hidden and poorly presented in the iOS apps, and how this new updated experience makes video playback front and center, with a “turn video off” option that keeps the audio track playing. The episode breaks down Apple's preferred move to HLS-based on-demand video delivery (via a separate, proprietary API HLS video streaming pass-through submission from approved hosting partners) while still supporting legacy MP4 video via RSS. They cover HLS basics (chunked delivery, adaptive quality, reduced bandwidth, and hosting costs), improved seeking/scrubbing versus progressive MP4 playback, and new measurement implications (better insight into drop-off and ad viewing). A major focus is monetization: Apple plans to enable dynamic ad insertion for HLS video and charge a per-impression fee, positioning Apple to take revenue without operating an ad business. The conversation notes early launch partners (Acast, Art19, Omny Studio, Simplecast), questions about specs and rollout timing (an app update is likely by the end of March; dynamic ad features later in the year), and the risk of platform fragmentation as distribution shifts from open RSS to proprietary APIs. James and Rob discuss alternate enclosures (Podcasting 2.0) as an open path to wider app support, reference iHeart's stated support for video via RSS alternate enclosures, and highlight creator concerns about losing separate audio edits when video replaces the audio feed during playback. They also touch on device support (not initially on Apple TV; CarPlay doesn't show video; Vision Pro support) and briefly discuss future RSS innovation ideas like comments, payments, transcripts, and location tags, plus a short note on upcoming podcast events (Podcast Show London, Podcast Movement New York, Podcast Movement at SXSW). Hello friends! Singer-songwriter, Scott Strickland returns to the show for episode 1545 part 2! Scott just got back into town from a tour out west and hasn't been on the show in a couple of years, so I invited him on to catch up and got much more than either of us expected. That's why it's a two-parter. Go to scottstricklandband.com for tour dates, music, merch and more. We have a great conversation in part 2 about recommitting to music, the positives and negatives of playing "money shows", his faith and work with the church, playing SXSW and some horror stories, his non-profit, Black Artists Rock, the crazy political climate in America, and much more. I had a great time catching up with Scott! I'm sure you will too. Let's get down! Tomorrow's Valentine's Day, but Oregon Venture Fund just gave founders the real love language: clarity. OVF published a new AI startup rubric — stage-by-stage expectations from pre-seed to Series A — covering what they actually look for in product, traction, team, go-to-market, and yes… revenue (because “it's AI” isn't a business model). I break down how to use it to stop wasting shots, pitch when you're truly ready, and avoid the quiet “circle back” purgatory. Then we swing to angels: Angel Oregon 2026 is live with timelines for Tech, CPG, and Life/Bioscience. Bootstrappers, you're not left out: MicroConf US is coming to Portland (tickets aren't cheap, but the value might be). And finally, the doom-and-gloom headlines—why they matter, what they miss, and the part nobody should forget: startups still drive net new job growth. In this episode of TIF Voices, we gather in the wake of Selena y Los Dinos, Isabel Castro's documentary portrait of Selena Quintanilla and her family band, to reflect on what it means to witness Selena's story told through her own image, voice, and archival history. Recorded shortly after the film's Texas festival screenings, this conversation captures our immediate emotional responses as Tejanas in Film watching the documentary in community. We discuss the electric atmosphere of the SXSW screenings, the presence of the Quintanilla family in the audience, and the distinctly communal experience of grieving, celebrating, and remembering together in a theater. The film's use of never-before-seen home videos and interviews allows Selena to emerge not just as an icon, but as a funny, ambitious, young Tejana navigating family, fame, language, and identity in real time. Our conversation explores how the documentary expands Selena's legacy beyond scripted portrayals, highlighting her Texas twang, Tex-Mex cultural specificity, and role as an early symbol of Latina female empowerment. We talk about the emotional weight of hearing her speak for herself, the tenderness of family dynamics, and the way this film functions as a new chapter in a decades-long process of collective grief for Texas Latinas and fans across generations. This is an episode about memory, representation, and what it means to finally see Selena in her own words.
Intelligence is emerging from sand and less than 1% of the population seems to care! Physicist and science communicator Dr. Petr Lebedev joins the podcast following his SXSW talk to explore the rapid advancement of AI and how it's dramatically shifting the global status quo. From completing a PhD in physics and writing for Veritasium, to leading science communication at Palisade Research, Petr steps in to bring some clarity to the weird, wild, and worrying sides of AI. Did you know that no one truly understands how large language models actually work? We go deep on misaligned systems, humanoid and dog robots, and why many experts believe AI could pose a serious global risk. Is AI our greatest tool? Or something we're slowly losing control of? This conversation is big, so we've split it into three parts. Part two drops next week.
Oregon isn't building the next Silicon Valley. Get the inside scoop on SXSW EDU 2026 as Mike Palmer sits down with Kayla Meyers from SXSW EDU to preview what's heading to Austin this March. From a reimagined city-wide footprint to the biggest podcast stage lineup yet, we're breaking down why this year is a must-attend for anyone in the education ecosystem. Kayla shares her journey from museum curator to the mastermind behind the conference's "impeccable vibes," offering a deep dive into the trends shaping the 2026 program. What we covered:
One of the biggest cultural events on the planet, South by Southwest, will be coming up soon in Austin, Texas (beginning on March 12). More info: https://sxsw.com.This video showcases how SXSW became so big, by using its own marketing playbook. So what exactly is SXSW? And how did it get so big? With an attendance of just 700 people, SXSW started back in 1987 with a goal to help creative people achieve their goals. Fast forward to 2019, and that number had exploded to over 417,000 people from 106 countries. So, what is this gathering really all about? It's not just one event. South by Southwest, or SXSW, is really built on three core pillars: Ideas, culture, and connections.IdeasSXSW is essentially a pop-up university featuring 5,000 speakers spread over 2,000 sessions — all spread across 20 different programming tracks.CultureThen you have the second pillar, which is really the cultural heart of SXSW. It's where it all started, the legendary film and music festivals. SXSW is a global stage for discovery. In 2019 alone, there were 133 feature films and almost 2,000 performing acts from 62 countries.ConnectionsSXSW hosts more than 350 official parties and networking events. This is the glue that holds the whole shebang together, where a random chat or a line for a taco can turn into a million-dollar deal.PeopleWho are the hundreds of thousands of attendees that make this whole thing tick?SXSW features almost a perfect 50-50 split between male and female attendees with 62% of attendees between the ages of 26 and 44. They make up a who's who of people in creative and innovation industries, including marketing and advertising, film and TV, books and music, technology and media.Almost 60% are there to find new business. 42% want to connect with their clients. This is why brands like Mercedes-Benz, Uber Eats, and McDonald's show up in a huge way.The big question: What's the next big idea that's will come out of this wild gathering in Texas?Book Marketing Success is a reader-supported publication. "If you're submitting unfinished, you should have a title card at the very beginning that says exactly where you're at." "We're looking for that director's vision, the fingerprint on it." After a brief hiatus for Sundance we are back to get you caught up on this week's physical media. Erik Childress and Peter Sobczynski look at a pair of enjoyable larks in the careers of John Woo and Jonathan Demme. There is the fun hangout movie that was just celebrated at the film festival where it had its premiere as well as one of the early Rolling Stones concert films. SXSW premiered one of the great twisted films about capitalistic depravity and Arrow does it justice here. There is also some twisted Dario Argento and a kid trying to hook up with Nicole Kidman. But this week is full of original films that were eventually remade including a western written by Elmore Leonard, the film which won William Hurt his Oscar, a Clark Gable film that he made twice, a dynamite thriller on a train, Charles Bronson as a cultured killer. Not but last least a classic rom-com that was remade that the guys have some very different opinions about.2:16 - Criterion (3:10 to Yuma (1957) (4K), Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985) (4K), House Party (4K), Birth (4K))31:44 - Warner Archive (Red Dust, The Narrow Margin)41:10 - Shout (Once a Thief (4K))51:14 - Vinegar Syndrome (Married to the Mob 4K, The Stendhal Syndrome 4K)1:09:33 - Arrow (Cheap Thrills)1:17:37 - Universal (Fifty Shades Trilogy 4K, Marry Me (4K))1:29:52 - Kino (Hold That Blonde, The Mechanic 4K, Sabrina (1995), The Hi-Lo Country, Let's Spend the Night Together 4K)2:09:35 – New Theatrical Titles On Blu-ray (Hung Up On a Dream: The Zombies, Blue Moon, The Thing with Feathers)2:11:41 – New Blu-ray Announcements!CLICK ON THE FILMS TO RENT OR PURCHASE AND HELP OUT THE MOVIE MADNESS PODCASTUSE COUPON “MOVIEMADNESS” TO GET 10% OFF ALL DUBBY PRODUCTSSIGN UP FOR AUDIBLEBe sure to check outErik's Weekly Box Office Column – At Rotten TomatoesCritics' Classics Series – At Elk Grove Cinema in Elk Grove Village, ILChicago Screening Schedule - All the films coming to theaters and streamingPhysical Media Schedule - Click & Buy upcoming titles for your library.(Direct purchases help the Movie Madness podcast with a few pennies.)Erik's Linktree - Where you can follow Erik and his work anywhere and everywhere. The Movie Madness Podcast has been recognized by Million Podcasts as one of the Top 100 Best Movie Review Podcasts as well as in the Top 60 Film Festival Podcasts and Top 100 Cinephile Podcasts. Colatura makes music that lives in the in-between: sometimes dreamy, sometimes heavy, and laced with fuzzy guitars, undeniable hooks, and raw storytelling. Long a fixture in the Brooklyn scene, the band relocated to Pittsburgh in 2024 and now splits their time between both cities.Colatura's new EP 'If I'm Being Honest' came out August 1st via Easy Does It Records. Produced by Nixon Boyd (Hollerado, Dizzy), the EP plays like a series of late-night confessionals - introspective, nostalgic, aching, and ultimately cathartic. It marks a new chapter for the band, expanding on the melodic, dreamy indie rock of their 2022 debut LP 'And Then I'll Be Happy' and their 2024 A/B side 'Do You Miss Her' / 'Suffer Dude', which was produced by Aron Kobayashi Ritch (Momma, Kills Birds, Been Stellar).Colatura's music has earned praise from outlets such as FLOOD, Brooklyn Vegan, Under The Radar, Austin Town Hall, The Alternative, and Atwood Magazine, and landed spots on Spotify editorials such as All New Rock and Fresh Finds Rock, as well as regular radio rotation at stations like KEXP and WYEP, where they also performed a live set this past February. Described live as “like sunshine streaming out of an amp with the volume set at nine,” Colatura has shared a stage with bands such as DEHD, Slow Pulp, Mamalarky, Nation of Language, Toledo, Pom Pom Squad, Jessica Lea Mayfield, and will be supporting Blondshell this November. With official showcases at SXSW, Capitol Hill Block Party, NXNE, New Colossus, WYEP's Summer Music Festival, and Pittsburgh's Millvale and Northside Music Festivals under their belt, Colatura is carving out their place in the indie rock landscape. Following the EP, the band hit the road for a US headline tour and has a European tour slotted for this fall. Thanks for listening!!! To make good creative work, you'll inevitably do a lot of bad work along the way. So building a thriving creative practice relies on showing up and doing the work consistently, whether you feel inspired or not. And we can get trapped into thinking that if only we had the perfect space, or the best pen, or right notebook, it would all be easier. This is a preview of a premium episode. To listen to the full interview, visit: https://designbetterpodcast.com/p/austin-kleon But our guest today, Austin Kleon, has built a remarkable creative practice around a deceptively simple toolkit: index cards, newspapers, scissors, and glue. He's the bestselling author of Steal Like an Artist, Show Your Work, Keep Going, and Don't Call it Art. What makes Austin's approach so valuable is how he's translated these ideas into a sustainable daily practice that's lasted over a decade. In our conversation, Austin shares why he starts every day writing in his diary before he picks up the phone, how constraints (time, space and materials) actually unlock creativity rather than limiting it, and why the path to doing your best digital work might start with picking up a pen. If you've ever struggled to maintain a creative practice, felt overwhelmed by tools and options, or wondered how to keep going when the work feels hard, this episode is for you. Bio Austin Kleon is the New York Times bestselling author of a trilogy of illustrated books about creativity in the digital age: Steal Like An Artist, Show Your Work!, and Keep Going. He's also the author of Newspaper Blackout, a collection of poems made by redacting the newspaper with a permanent marker. His books have sold over two million copies and have been translated into over 30 languages. He's been featured on NPR's Morning Edition, PBS Newshour, and in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. New York Magazine called his work “brilliant,” The Atlantic called him “positively one of the most interesting people on the Internet,” and The New Yorker said his poems “resurrect the newspaper when everybody else is declaring it dead.” He speaks for organizations such as Pixar, Google, Netflix, SXSW, TEDx, Dropbox, Adobe, and The Economist. In previous lives, he worked as a librarian, a web designer, and an advertising copywriter. He lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife and sons. Visit him online at www.austinkleon.com
