On this episode of The Jason Cavness Experience I talk to Rene Capella - HCDE & Ethics @ the University of Washington • Google DSC Lead & Founder • WTM Ambassador • Software Engineer We talk about the following and other items Her love of learning Ethics in tech Philosophy Women Tech Makers Building Community Rene's Bio Originally from Cincinnati, a coal miner's granddaughter. If you've seen or read Hilbilly Eligy, you know the context of my youth. I studied Philosophy at Miami University for 3 years: not for a career goal (which is probably why I didn't stick around) but because I just loved learning. I couldn't afford my last year there, so I was "auditing" classes (essentially just walking in and listening for free). While there I tutored and was an Assistant Editor on the Journal of Nietzsche studies. It's relevant because it laid the foundation for my focus on ethics in tech now. On a "where's the most educated city in the U.S." Google, I left Ohio for Seattle in 2011. I putzed around, grew a family, and learned to program while parenting and managing restaurants. in 2017 I did a BootCamp at General Assembly and became a Software Engineer at DispatchBot 3 months after graduation. I love the empowerment of learning to program. I love the empowerment of engineering generally. It wasn't a skill I knew was available to me for the first 3 decades of my life. So finding it has really been an amazing rush of application and exercise. After learning the ropes, leading a software team, and earning a certificate in Project Management, I realized I wanted to dedicate my brain and energy to Product Management. Tristan Harris' Center for Humane Technology was a major inspiration. I didn't like just making features on demand: I wanted to build technology that was designed well. So I left my lead role and now I'm attending the University of Washington for HCDE and Ethics. In the time leading up to being accepted (HCDE is capacity constrained, and I needed a lot of prereqs), I attended North Seattle College. While there I founded the Google Developer Student Club on campus. We were the most active club in all of the U.S. and Canada completing over 150 events. 35 were national or global. The rest catered to our local community of 400+ people, making us the largest student club on campus (and possibly ever). Rene's Social Media Rene's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/amandarenecapella/ Rene's Github: https://github.com/renecapella Rene's Advice I think as far as something I want to impart, is not that you just have to let go and understand that what other people think of you does not matter and you need to be empathetic. For other individuals' interests, check in and check in often. But ultimately, you can't control them. It's something we do with social media and with our personal brand. We want to control people's thoughts. But just let go of that. BIO:Originally from the Calgary area, Stuart McAllister has been living with his wife Carie and four children in El Salvador for the past 11 years. They are passionate about seeing lives changed, both in the local Salvadoran people as well as in the thousands of Canadians and Americans that have come to partner with Shelter Canada. Since 2011, Stuart and Carie have been working to develop a team of Salvadorans with the hope of seeing them know and follow Christ as they carry the organization's mission forward. Despite the uncertainty of the world around us all, they trust that God is doing a powerful work in this small, impoverished nation, and are excited to be able to partner in whatever ways they can. Stuart entered his current role as CEO of Shelter Canada in 2020.SHELTER CANADA: Shelter was born in 2001, after a series of earthquakes left hundreds of thousands of people in El Salvador without a safe home.A small group of friends from Alberta felt compelled to help, so they flew down for one week and built three homes for three different families. While this number may seem small, in light of the few hundred thousand families living in unsafe conditions in the country, it was what formed the vision and mission of Shelter Canada today.Since then, the organization has grown to employ over 36 local Salvadorans and has built over 4,000 homes for families in need in El Salvador. But we don't just build houses, we also build hope. Our mission is to spread the gospel will providing homes for every Salvadoran in need. And in the process, we strive to build people up and teach them valuable skills so they can pour back into their own communitiesResources:https://www.sheltercanada.ca/Social Links:https://www.facebook.com/ShelterCanada/

Today Al chats with the writer/creator of Aztec Warrior God, David Towner. https://youtu.be/TfTj1VWFd8U www.aztecwarriorgod.com https://www.facebook.com/aztecwarriorgod About Aztec Warrior God: The Project Aztec Warrior God is an exciting, action-filled superhero franchise created with modern audiences in mind. The story is crafted to appeal to broad, multicultural audiences with strong messages of equality, tolerance, racial and social harmony, environmental responsibility and compassion. While the characters are traditional superheroes, capable of using their powers for destruction, they practice restraint, diplomacy and seek intellectual solutions to problems before resorting to violence. The franchise features indigenous characters from every region of the world and a female-centric, ensemble cast, with 8 of the 13 ensemble characters being women. The Series Facing imminent extinction during the final day of Hernan Cortes' assault on Tenochtitlan (August 13th, 1521), many surviving Tenochca withdraw into a designated region of the underworld (Mictlan) which was gifted by the god Huitzilopochtli, to re-build, re-populate and thrive without interference from the outside world. The gods subsequently granted 13 warriors and designated intellectuals, superpowers and immortality in order to ensure strict cultural preservation and maximum potential for advancement. Their immortality is preserved by a well-guarded water source known as the “Healing Waters” AKA fountain of youth. Over the next five hundred years, the intellectuals integrate themselves into various cultures around the world to develop an understanding of technology, cultural development and languages to ensure their prosperity during the 1000-year integration, always returning to their civilization in the underworld and sharing their teachings with their peers. Their intellectual and technological knowledge rival any country on earth. However, they remain true to their culture and live as they did in the 16th century. One designated warrior, Amoxtli, later nicknamed “Aztec” by society, has been granted powers of superhuman strength and shapeshifting, which he has spent nearly 500 years developing. He will emerge on earth on the 500th anniversary of their transition to Mictlan to fulfill his destiny. On August 13th, 2021, he will enter the world and find opportunities to help create a more stable, peaceful and sustainable planet, using his powers and knowledge. Amoxtli and his group are aided by warriors from the spirit world who have been hand-selected by the Spirit World Tribal Council (AKA "The Council"); Danuwoa (Cherokee) and Ahiga (Navajo) who appear periodically to serve as earthly guides as well as regional guides from Hindu, Zulu, and Taino cultures. About Emergence (First Chapter): On the 500th anniversary of the fall of their empire (August 13th, 2021), the immortals emerge to discover a world that has been crippled by a Lassa virus pandemic. Upon discovering that the virus was created in a lab by a Russian Oligarch named Adrian Volkov, who is also manipulating and selling vaccines to the highest bidder, they decide to negotiate with him to help distribute vaccines to the most devastated countries. When Volkov makes it clear that he has no interest in supporting their cause, the warriors decide that his organization must be destroyed. Bio: Originally from Alaska (Chugiak-Eagle River), David Towner is an American Entrepreneur, Comedian, Writer and Filmmaker. Towner is most known for his quirky feature film, Our Scripted Life, which was released in 2020 and was downloaded half a million times in the first three months after being released. The film was the public introduction to Towner's character Roscoe Turner, a hillbilly from Kentucky who offers his own brand of unsolicited wisdom. Towner is also the Creator and Head Writer for the graphic novel series, Aztec Warrior God, which has gained millions of fans around the world. He is married to model Brandi Mendoza. Today Al chats with the illustrators of Aztec Warrior God by David Towner, the very talented, Andrea and Diego Lopez Mata. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37j-bFd39zc www.aztecwarriorgod.com https://www.facebook.com/aztecwarriorgod About Aztec Warrior God: The Project Aztec Warrior God is an exciting, action-filled superhero franchise created with modern audiences in mind. There are over 30K high schools, which means there are 30+ valedictorians, class presidents, team captains, etc. While the average acceptance rate to colleges across the country is over 60%, if your child has a "dream college" on their mind, you won't want to miss this episode. How will s/he stand out among a pool of thousands? Be Present. Be Open. Be Uncomfortable. Today, our guest, Ross Mankuta, offers his tips, tales, and lessons on how teaching your child to be present, be open-minded, and be willing to explore and be uncomfortable is the best preparation for the college admission process. And if YOU, as the Parent, can find a way to teach your child to do all of that, well, my friends, you are raising a courageous doer and college-bound teen! As the Director of College Counseling, Ross discusses Early Action, Early Decision, and the reality of applying to highly competitive institutions. Ross also offers surprising tales of two of his most memorable students and applicants, and explains what made each one so compelling in the admission process. Ross truly puts the Community in his school, Milken Community School. HIGHLIGHTS from this episode: IF YOU DO NOTHING ELSE, JUMP TO MINUTE 30 AND LISTEN FOR 15 MINUTES. I asked Ross to share a tale about a student that stands out from his entire career. Ross gives a detail description about two students who stood out in the application with their PQs. They found their "coolness" factor and leverage that in the application process. One is a C/B average student in school, but wins a top award while in the middle of application season. The other becomes known in the admission office as "Train Boy" because of application to USC's Policy, Planning, and Development School. Both applicants use their passions to guide their journey to college. They didn't do what they thought they "should" do, but rather, what they wanted to do. You are in for a treat. Take the 15 minutes!! I promise you, it will be worth it. Bio: Originally from Long Island, NY, Ross D. Mankuta earned his Bachelors and Master's degrees from the George Washington University (GW). After spending time working in politics in both the House of Representatives and The White House, Ross made the transition to the world of higher education by working in the Undergraduate Admission Office at GW. After two years at GW and two more at the University of Southern California (USC), Ross came to Milken Community Schools to join its College Counseling & Academic Planning office. During his time at Milken Ross also served as an assistant coach to the baseball team as well as worked to assist the admission office by conducting interviews and sitting on the admission committee. In 2018 Ross was on the steering committee for Milken's CAIS/WASC accreditation process. This past summer, Ross took on added responsibility and was named Milken's Director of College Counseling, Alumni Relations, & Strategic Partnerships. While Deb's apparent resemblance to Amy Schumer (at least according to the random lady in the grocery store and Ed Schwartzman) doesn't make her funny, Deb and Amy do share a love for the Comedy Attic. In fact, Amy Schumer named the Comedy Attic one of the top 10 comedy clubs in the nation. And Deb agrees. The business of making people laugh isn't easy, but over the last 10 years, Jared & Dayna Thompson have built a Midwestern comedy mecca for fans and comedians alike. Not only does the Comedy Attic book some of the top names in comedy, they've helped their fair share of local comedians hone their chops. Community is also important to them. So much so, that they donate the proceeds from their yearly anniversary show and have raised over $45,000 for local charities over the last ten years! With six professional shows and an open mic weekly, there are plenty of chances to laugh loud and enjoy one of the best comedy clubs in the United States, right here in downtown Bloomington. In our Facebook Follow segment we encourage listeners to be a part of the Bloomington food truck scene by following Top Shotta Jerk Chicken and Cuisine. A sweet story and a spicy (not too spicy) chicken. Can't get any better than that! And in our REAL-List segment, debunks a popular myth about mortgages - that you should avoid lenders who sell your mortgage after closing. BIO: Originally from Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, Jared Thompson moved to Bloomington in 2003 with his future wife, Dayna. They opened the Comedy Attic in 2008. Not long after, the couple welcomed their son Max into the world, followed by their daughter Margaret a few years later. Jared is a lifelong IU fan, but nothing (outside his love for his children) tops his love for the Chicago Cubs, even if it causes him severe emotional distress. Greg McKeown, author of the New York Times Bestseller “Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less” and founder of McKeown Inc, joins Jim and Jan on a discussion on essentialism, priorities, and the belief that doing less is actually doing more. Greg explains what essentialism is, how we can open up the conversation in our own lives and find out what our priorities should be as a daily discipline to gain clarity. He speaks of his experiences in helping leaders and executives get clarity so their organization operates with intent rather than reacting to matters deemed as urgent from outside forces. Key Takeaways [2:58] The essential priority for Greg is tuning in to his internal clarity. Our clarity is often drowned out in societal demands, the need to feel as though we are doing more, and appearances we try to keep up on social media. [7:48] Most people know intellectually that they don’t need to be doing what they are, but emotionally it doesn’t feel true. The decision for Greg to move towards what he does want to do and let go of he doesn’t, let him to the process of discovering the four stage pattern of essentialism. [9:01] The four stage pattern that Greg discovered when working in Silicon Valley in organizations and individuals: Clarity, Success, Options and Chaos. [11:38] Planning isn’t something to be crammed in, it’s the essential work. The essentialist believes only a few things matter, and it changes the course of your life completely on what you pursue and how you spend your time. [14:45] Practices such as meditation, praying, journaling and getting enough rest are helpful to increase space to identify what is actually essential. [20:02] Greg encourages people to make decisions less based upon if something is good, rather if it’s one of the most important things. Anything below 90% essential should at least be questioned. [23:02] Two examples of non essential things Greg traded that made a profound impact on his life - trading out Facebook scrolling for calling his grandfather, and cutting out sugar. [31:29] The first step towards essentialism is to have the conversation and identifying that there are non essential practices at play. Next is the work towards cutting out what is non essential and shifting towards a mindset that supports the practices and choices that go along with essentialism. [36:30] Greg talks about the paradox of success on a societal level, and what it takes to maintain the social complexity in our time now. [40:12] Greg shares a tangible daily practice on how we can get to the very first 6 meaningful items and cross off the other obligations go. [50:57] The things that matter most that are important and essential are hardly ever urgent. LinkedIn: @GregMcKeown Website: GregMcKeown.com Twitter: @GregoryMcKeown Quotable Quotes For me, it’s about clarity. To be able to hear, recognize and obey that voice of clarity that’s often drowned out. The right answer is often to not to do something. Strategy is what you say no to. The most essential work is to protect our ability to discern what is essential. The essentialist believes almost everything is non essential, and only a few things really matter. Ask yourself, “what should I stop doing?” Clarity equals success If you are lost and admit you are lost, the intent changes. That top and most important item rarely gets done at all. For how long will this matter? Bio Originally from London, England, Greg McKeown is the author of the New York Times bestseller, “Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less” and the founder of McKeown, Inc, a company with a mission to teach Essentialism to millions of people around the world. Their clients include Adobe, Apple, Airbnb, Cisco, Google, Facebook, Pixar, Salesforce.com, Symantec, Twitter, VMware and Yahoo!. It’s a compound found in both cannabis and hemp, but it is not the psychoactive chemical that can get you high (that’s THC). It does not heal or cure any kind of chronic illness, but it can be beneficial for individuals suffering from chronic illnesses and chronic pain. This is because CBD oil products react with the CB1 and CB2 receptors in your endocannabinoid system, which in turn helps that system in its efforts to regulate properly and achieve homeostasis.
