Guests: Greg Loiacano – vocals, guitar Michael Urbano – drums Vicki Randle – percussionIn this episode of Only in the Green Room, we sit down with Greg Loiacono & Stingray, a Bay Area super-group built on deep respect, serious groove, and a whole lot of joy. What started as a solo recording session for Greg Loiacano quickly turned into something much bigger when drummer Michael Urbano stepped in—and the chemistry was instant. Add longtime collaborator and powerhouse percussionist Vicki Randle, and Stingray was born. The trio talks about the unspoken language that defines their music: listening more than talking, playing for the song, and letting structure and feel guide everything. Influenced by classic soul, R&B, funk, and rock—from Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye to Sly Stone and beyond—Stingray's sound feels timeless but alive in the moment. We dig into:How the band formed organically (and accidentally)Why joy and laughter are non-negotiable onstageThe rare magic of musicians who truly listen to one anotherPlaying parts instead of overplayingBalancing Stingray with busy touring and recording schedulesRecording at the legendary 2200 Studios and feeling the weight of Bay Area music historyWhat's next: new singles, more shows, and getting back into the studioWith lineup support from Tom Ayer's, Kofi Brown, and Danny Eisenberg, Stingray is prioritizing what matters most—great songs, great vibes, and genuine connection. If you've ever wondered what it looks like when seasoned musicians stop chasing “projects” and start chasing feeling, this conversation says it all.New singles out now:Come Back HomeI Hope We Get to DanceRecorded backstage, moments after finishing their November 2025 set at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, California —because the best conversations always happen only in the green room.Greg Loiacono. Founder of Stingray, is best known as a gritty rock and soul man of legendy San Francisco rock band, The Mother Hips and his collaborations with Chris RobinsonVicki Randle has recorded and/or toured with Aretha Franklin, Mavis Staples, George Benson, Lionel Richie, Kenny Loggins, Celine Dion, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Branford Marsalis, Jeffrey Osborne, Laura Nyro and Lyle Mays. She appeared in the HBO documentary Mavis!. She became the first female permanent member of the Tonight Show Band with Branford Marsalis, starting in May 1992 and continuing through May 2009.Michael Urbano  toured extensively with John Hiatt (1995–1999), as one of Hiatt's "Nashville Queens" that included bassist Davey Faragher (Elvis Costello) and guitarist David Immergluck (Counting Crows). He also spent time as a drummer Smash Mouth. Before Smash Mouth, Urbano had played drums with The Spent Poets, The Kinetics, Deathray, Third Eye Blind, John Hiatt, Black Lab, Cracker, Paul Westerberg, Red House Painters, Willy DeVille, Camper Van Beethoven, and Sheryl Crow.[2]https://gregloiacono.com/

Jazz, in particular, has played a central role in this lineage. From John Coltrane's “Alabama,” to Max Roach and Abbey Lincoln's We Insist! Freedom Now Suite, from Nina Simone's “Mississippi Goddamn” to Charles Mingus' “Fables of Faubus,” jazz has always spoken truth to power. That tradition continues today, ascontemporary jazz musicians compose artistic eulogies for Oscar Grant III, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, Sandra Bland, and George Floyd; celebrate the nation's first Black president; and reaffirm that “Black Is Beautiful,” more than 60 years after the phrase became a unifying call within the Black PowerMovement. Jazz also chronicled the life and journey of Dr. King in real time, beginning with his emergence as a young preacher and activist in the early 1950s, and has continued to honor his legacy in the decades since his life was cut short. On thisspecial episode of Milestones, we explore the role jazz played inadvancing King's philosophy and celebrating his extraordinary impact as one of the most consequential leaders in American history with NEA Jazz Master and four-time GRAMMY-winning artist and educator Terri Lyne Carrington, GRAMMY-winning bassist and vocalist Ben Williams, and GRAMMY-nominated pianist and curator Orrin Evans. Together, with host Angélika Beener, they reflect on pieces like Herbie Hancock's 1969 “I Have a Dream,” and more, examining their cultural impact and role in the musical evolution of jazz. Hip-hop historians T.L. Cross and WBGO's own Stevan Smith also join the conversation, shedding new light on “King Holiday,” the 1986 hip-hop and R&B anthem that united an ensemble of rising stars—from New Edition and Run-DMC to Whitney Houston and Stephanie Mills. With the late Dexter Scott King at the helm, Kurtis Blow was tasked with assembling a collective to create an anthem for thenext generation – one that would honor Dr. King's legacy and serve as the soundtrack for the inaugural MLK holiday celebration, 40 years ago. The iconic scholar, author, global thought leader and visionary Dr. Angela Davis joins as a very special guest, offering remarkable insights on this milestone anniversary.

Med de båda sistnämnda och Shorter gjorde hon det prisade albumet ”Both sides now” (2000).Här får ni också höra musik ur hennes ikoniska album ”Blue” från 1971.Källor:Joni Mitchells officiella hemsida https://jonimitchell.com/”Joni on Joni; interviews and encounters” redaktör Susan Whitall (Chicago Review Press, 2020) ”Joni Mitchell in her own words; conversations with Malka Marom” (ECW Press, 2014)Kontakta Jazzradion - och följ oss i sociala medier!

#135 - Jazz & Beat Culture: A Symbiotic Relationship

Tell Us How You Really FeelThe needle drops and the room changes—horns breathe, drums loosen, and a sampler starts talking back. We dive into the living thread between jazz and beat culture, from Congo Square and brass bands to dusty chops, off-grid drums, and the global scenes building tomorrow's standards today. The journey moves through the roots—rebellion, soul, spiritual release—into the eras of big band glory, commercial decline, and the underground that kept the flame alive until hip-hop cracked open the vault and let the swing back out.We explore how producers like DJ Premier, Pete Rock, J Dilla, Madlib, and Nujabes reintroduced jazz aesthetics to a new generation, turning horn riffs, Rhodes chords, and brushed cymbals into modern language. Along the way, we spotlight the cities and crews shaping the current wave: London's Yussef Dayes, Kamaal Williams, and Shabaka Hutchings; LA's Kamasi Washington and Terrace Martin; global innovators from Italy, Austria, Japan, and beyond. Labels and collectives like Jazz Is Dead bridge elders and explorers, proving the tradition evolves best when it's shared.Between records, we trade stories and facts that link technique to technology—Miles facing the band for deeper communication, Coltrane's relentless practice, Raymond Scott's early electronic machines, and how big band sessions birthed mic placement and room capture approaches that shaped modern studios and DAWs. Herbie Hancock reminds us that jazz is conversation: musicians, audience, and energy in constant exchange. Beat culture carries that forward—looping, bending, and improvising with machines as instruments. Ride with us, discover new artists and essential beat tapes, and feel the continuity: jazz never died; it reincarnated in the pads.If you felt the groove, subscribe, rate, and share with a friend. Drop a comment with your favorite jazz-sampled track and hit our Linktree to buy a tee shirt or buy us a coffee. Let's keep the lineage loud. - - Die gespielten Titel: Interpret:in: Titel (Album / Label) - Jimmy Smith: I Got a Woman (Jimmy Smith and the Trio: Salle Pleyel - May 28, 1965 / Trema) - Shirley Horn: I'm Old Fashioned (A Lazy Afternoon / Steeple Chase) - Herbie Hancock: Ostinato (Suite for Angela) (Mwandishi / Warnder Bros.) - Miles Davis: One and One (On the Corner / Columbia) - João Gilberto, Stan Getz: Eu Vim da Bahia (Stan Getz: The Best of Two Worlds. feat. His collaborations span icons like Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, James Brown, and Sting. He's the leader of multiple acclaimed bands including the Christian McBride Big Band, Inside Straight, and New Jawn. He also serves as the host of NPR's Jazz Night in America and was the Artistic Director of the Newport Jazz Festival for a decade. His story is incredible, and we're setting the stage here with Part 1, The Early Years. Growing up in Philadelphia, Christian was surrounded by greatness. His high school classmates included Questlove, Black Thought, Joey DeFrancesco, and Kurt Rosenwinkel, just to name a few. In this episode, we talk about those formative years, the Philly music scene, and how he broke into the spotlight with Wynton Marsalis and Freddie Hubbard, along with the wild story of his rare opportunity to play for Miles Davis. We also get into his professional mentality, early lessons on leadership, and what it took to earn respect from legends while still a teenager. Christian is an amazing storyteller, and this conversation is full of history, heart, and laughs. We had the best time recording this one, so I hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Lets go! We start the episode with a chat about artists that drastically changed their sound over the years – from the Beatles to Cher to Alanis to Herbie Hancock to Bob Dylan to Fleetwood Mac to Beyonce. Speaking of artists that changed their sound, how about the Bee Gees? They started out as a folky pop band and changed their sound to R&B in the mid ‘70s to out and out disco by 1977. We have an excellent 1989 Brad Giffen interview with Barry Gibb as he talks about the groups desire to keep going in spite of the backlash they faced after Saturday Night Fever. It cast a long shadow on them, but they endured by writing hit songs for other artists. Then, we have a really fun chat with Jason Mraz from 2012 and 2014. You get a real sense of who he is - an almost old school hippy vibe that’s really endearing. Plus, some audio from the late ‘70s/early ‘80s with the great George Benson – a jazz giant who had lots of commercial success. He has some great insights as well. And then we chat with one of Christopher’s favourite people – Ian Thomas – who has had a whole string of hit records that Canadians know and love – and some of those songs were covered by the likes of Santana, Manfred Mann and America. Ian is one of the newest inductees into the Canadian songwriters Hall Of Fame – which is coming up on Fri, Oct 17 at the Meridian Centre in Toronto. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster. Episode Overview In this episode of The Design Vault, hosts Albert Shum and Thamer Abanami are joined by legendary producer Dan the Automator Nakamura (Gorillaz, Deltron 3030, Dr. Octagon) to explore the Technics SL-1200 MK2 — the direct drive DJ turntable that evolved from an audiophile product into a central instrument for hip hop, house, and techno DJs and producers. From Konosuke Matsushita's long-term “250-year philosophy” to Grand Wizard Theodore's scratching breakthrough, this is the story of how Japanese engineering precision met street creativity to create one of the most influential musical instruments of the late 20th century. Dan shares personal stories of witnessing a young Qbert and Mix Master Mike before fame, why the 1200 is often called the “Porsche 911 of turntables,” and how the constraints of early sampling technology shaped hip hop's signature sound. F**k'd up world, ain't it Untitled Beatle People? Like all rational weirdos, we're fed up with the fascism that (as of this writing) has removed Jimmy Kimmel from the airwaves. We stand with a fellow comic and avowed Beatles/Letterman stan, and against both censorship and emotionally crippled, diabolical jag bags. Fortunately… we have the perfect antidote to the state of the world, as we go back through the mists of time (cue “The Long & Winding Road” from “Tripping The Live Fantastic”)…to a time they call the 60's (…more magic piano blues noodling…) and welcome a die-hard, O.G. Beatles fan and Chicago legend, “Beatle” Fred Ciba! From being at the Beatles historic Chicago shows to shopping at the Apple Boutique and visiting the original Cavern Club, Fred experienced it all, in real time. Join us as Fred provides a fascinating glimpse into the exhilaration of Beatlemania, as heard on Chicago's bygone, legendary rock radio stations like WLS, WIND, and WCFL. Fred also puts up with a fair amount of unnecessary, and, arguably, outright disrespectful nonsense from T.J. (YA SHOCKED?) as the Gab Two also ask:

His virtuosic technique quickly drew international attention, leading to collaborations with legends like Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Haden, and Herbie Hancock. In his conversation with WFYI's Kyle Long, Rubalcaba discusses his connection to Dizzy Gillespie and his latest album, “A Tribute to Benny Moré and Nat King Cole.”

Jonathan Gould's Burning Down The House explores their affluent background, the root of their ambition and the springboard of the New York scene of the late ‘70s (he was a regular at CBGB). Along with … ... the romanticised image of CBGB and the reality … their black music roots: “the same instrumentation as Booker T & the MGs” … the influence of the Modern Lovers: “Jonathan Richman and Byrne were both oddballs, appealing but peculiar” … how the economy of New York's real estate let them rent a 2,000 square foot loft for $289 a month … bands from affluent backgrounds take greater commercial risks: “there was always a Plan B” … the art-school drop-out lineage that began John Lennon and Keith Richards … how different they were from the CBGBs acts, a band that sang verses in French and “didn't dress like the New York Dolls” … the band's dynamic, Chris and Tina “effectively one person” ... did Byrne really make Tina Weymouth “re-audition”? … the success of the Tom Tom Club and the tension that caused … Byrne's invention of his own “white choreography” … Stop Making Sense, as big a part of their legacy as any album … and why there can never be a reunion Mentioned in dispatches: Brian Eno, Adrian Belew, Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, Johnny Ramone and Fela Kuti. Today we're going on an aquatic journey with Herbie Hancock's Maiden Voyage. Herbie calls the title track the best tune he's ever written.  We dive deep into the music to explore what makes this tune, and this album, great. The roots of Maiden Voyage date back in 1963, when Herbie began hearing rumors that Miles Davis wanted to hear him play. He didn't believe it at first -- Miles was at the height of his celebrity by this point. But soon he got a call. He went over to Miles's house and played with him, George Coleman, Tony Williams and Ron Carter for three days. On the third day, Miles asks the group to come to studio to record Seven Steps to Heaven. Herbie says, "Does that mean I'm in the band?" Miles says, "You're making the record, mother f**cker!" After two years playing in what many call the one of the greatest jazz ensembles of all time, Herbie would release Maiden Voyage in 1965. Along with George, Tony and Ron, plus saxophonist Freddie Hubbard. Although it is one of his simplest tunes -- with a rhythm inspired by a cologne commercial -- Maiden Voyage would become a favorite and a standard among jazz musicians. In this episode, you'll hear:- Adam and Peter pick apart the greatest moments from the album, including some perfect solos- The story of the commercial roots of this jazz standard- Where the record got its aquatic theme- Why a great song starts with a great bassline (just ask Ron Carter)- How this record could have been even better ... if it weren't for that piano sound- Where we land on Van Gelder Sound controversy-----Keyboards? Albums we haven't covered. "Boomer" talk. We know you have opinions about this show. Help us make You'll Hear It better by sharing your feedback with us and answering a short survey.
