Photo: Wikipedia Public DomainStory by: Gail NoblesLet's talk about a lovely song called "We'll Never Have to Say Goodbye Again," written by Jeffrey Comanor. This song came out in September 1976 as part of an album called "A Rumor in His Own Time." It's all about a sweet couple who have an amazing night together, and the singer wishes it would just go on forever—no goodbyes, just happiness. While Jeffrey's original version didn't get much attention, a big change happened when Clive Davis, the president of Arista Records, stumbled upon it just a few months later. He saw potential in it, and it was soon covered by a duo called Deardorff & Joseph in their first album with Arista. After Deardorff & Joseph went their separate ways, interestingly, the people managing them found new opportunities—you see, Marcia Day started managing Deardorff, while Susan Joseph took charge of Joseph.Fast forward to February 1978, and we have more covers of this enchanting tune! Maureen McGovern and the duo England Dan & John Ford Coley each released their versions. McGovern's cover didn't quite catch on, but England Dan & John Ford Coley hit the jackpot! Their rendition spent six weeks at the top of the Billboard US Easy Listening chart and made waves in Canada, too.I'm Gail Nobles. You're listening to Sound Flave.

Today's guest should probably do his own podcast. Welcome John Ford Coley to the show. He's a great storyteller with a lifetime of stories to share. He grew up outside of Dallas where he was classically trained on piano as a kid. He grew up on opera, show tunes, and church music. But rock and roll wormed its way into his soul and he struck a deal with his piano teacher to show him how to play popular songs. While John is most well known for his band England Dan and John Ford Coley and what is now known as yacht rock. But his early bands were a bit heavier. At one point, he even opened for Vanilla Fudge and Led Zeppelin. But that's when John and Dan started creating their softer music.  John talks about how he met his musical partner, Dan Seals, and how they got their monikers, England Dan and John Ford Coley. He reveals the greatest mistake he's ever made, the coincidence that got him in the studio to watch a Joni Mitchell session, and working with former podcast subject, Jim Gordon. After hits like I'd Really Love To See You Tonight, Sad To Belong, & We'll Never Have To Say Goodbye Again, the duo had run its course. John played in some other musical projects before getting into acting. His Godfather connections helped out there. He eventually left music all together. But he couldn't stay away forever. The emergence of yacht rock revitalized his career (except in The Philippeans, where he's basically royalty). He tours, playing his hits and telling stories. I've seen him live and it's a treat. England Dan and John Ford Coley could probably only exist in the 70s. Not the most exciting group name, and certainly one of the least exciting album covers we've ever seen. But, oh man - that song. Truth be told, Bill and Frank may not be the most exciting people you've seen, and maybe we can only exist in podcast land for this moment in time. We hope we can make the same impact that England Dan and John  Ford Coley did. JOHN FORD COLEY is a Grammy-nominated, multiplatinum-selling singer-songwriter, best known for being half of the '70s duo England Dan and John Ford Coley. Considered a mid-'70s phenomenon, and often misidentified in peoples' memories as a one-hit wonder, the duo actually charted six Top 40 singles, four or them Top Ten, in just four years. The duo had met at at school in Dallas, Texas where John forged a natural connection with Dan Seals and together they began covering several styles of music from rock and roll to country. Originally known as Colley & Wayland (Seal's middle name), the name didn't quite work and a change was needed as proposed by Jim Seals. "England Dan" was a reference to the fact that Dan, when The Beatles first hit America in 1964, had fixated on the Liverpool quartet and briefly affected an English accent. "Ford" was added to John Colley's name, and the spelling of his last name shortened to 'Coley' to assure its proper pronunciation. The duo eventually found the success they sought with the release of the chart topping hit, “Love to See You Tonight.” During this interview, John paints a vivid picture of what it was like to be a musician in California in the '70s. He says it was an exciting but tough and fickle business, although he, unlike some of his contemporaries, managed to keep it in perspective. Above all, it was a time of discovery and exploration, where many unexpected opportunities arose. Some of which provided England Dan and John Ford Coley with the chance to share the stage with artists like Carol King, Seals and Crofts and Three Dog Night. John chats about the ephemeral nature of the music business, and how quickly trends and styles can change. By the end of the 1970's, the duo was beset by new pressures from all sides. The perception was that, between the burgeoning disco boom and the undercurrent of punk rock (which always got a lot more press than it actually sold records), their continuing with the brand of harmony based, melodic pop/rock in which they specialised was a losing battle. After some near-disastrous sessions in Los Angeles, they salvaged but a single song - but that song proved to be their last Top Ten hit, 'Love is the Answer,' written by Todd Rundgren. The duo's world was turned upside down and they split up in 1980. John withdrew from performing after the break, although he did return the following year to cut an album with singers Leslie Bulkin and Kelly Bulkin on which Jim Seals' longtime partner Dash Crofts also did some singing. During the early '90s he re-appeared as a performing artist and a 'very best of' album was released. Today John Ford Coley remains busy and active as a songwriter, producer, and actor. England Dan sadly passed away in 2009 of mantle cell lymphoma. . This is John Ford Coley's story. The man is not only a superb musician. The stories he tells are hilarious. Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles and dozens of other women who say they were sexually assaulted by Larry Nassar are seeking more than $1 billion from the FBI for failing to stop the now convicted sports doctor. There's no dispute that FBI agents in 2015 knew that Nassar was accused of assaulting gymnasts. But the agents failed to act, leaving Nassar free to continue to target young women and girls for more than a year. Individual lawsuits could follow the tort claims filed Wednesday. Claimants include Biles, Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney, all Olympic gold medalists. An email seeking comment was sent to the FBI. In remarks to Congress last year, FBI Director Christopher Wray acknowledged major mistakes. The House panel investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol will open a prime-time hearing Thursday with a focus on far-right extremists who broke into the building that day. Those set to testify include a documentary filmmaker, Nick Quested, who recorded members of the far-right Proud Boys as they stormed the building. The committee is also expected to hear testimony from a U.S. Capitol Police officer, Caroline Edwards, who was seriously injured that day. In announcing the witnesses, the committee said it will present previously unseen material and provide the American people an initial summary of its findings. Moderna says its experimental COVID-19 vaccine that combines its original shot with protection against the omicron variant appears to work. COVID-19 vaccine makers are studying updated boosters that might be offered in the fall. San Francisco residents voted overwhelmingly to recall progressive District Attorney Chesa Boudin in a heated campaign that divided Democrats over crime, policing and public safety reform in the famously liberal city. Recall backers cheered the results as proof that San Franciscans wanted change in a chaotic DA's office. But Boudin remained defiant to supporters, saying the movement for justice would continue and blaming his loss on billionaire Republicans. Boudin was a first-time political candidate who narrowly won office in November 2019 as part of a national wave of progressive elections. The mayor will appoint his replacement, but Boudin could also run again in November. The NHL Eastern Conference Final between the Rangers and Lightning is now matched at two games apiece, the Yankees became the first major league baseball team to reach 40 wins, the Angels fire their manager, then lose their thirteenth straight game, and Tiger Woods says he is pulling out of next week's U.S. Open.  The son of an 86-year-old woman killed in the racist Buffalo mass shooting is calling on Congress to act against domestic terrorism. Garnell Whitfield, Jr., whose mother was the oldest of the 10 Buffalo victims, challenged senators at a hearing Tuesday. He told them: “What are you doing? You were elected to protect us.” The emotional testimony came against the backdrop of intensifying Senate negotiations on a gun safety bill. The proposals are gaining traction, but also raising concerns from Democrats and some advocacy groups who are pushing senators to do more, faster, to stem the tide of mass shootings across the nation. Academy Award–winning actor Matthew McConaughey offered an emotional call on Congress to “reach a higher ground” and pass gun control legislation. In a roughly 22-minute speech at the White House on Tuesday, McConaughey, a Uvalde, Texas, native, offered a full-throated exhortation for a gridlocked Congress to pass gun reforms that can save lives while not infringing on Second Amendment rights. McConaughey used his star power to make an argument for legislation in a fashion that the Biden administration has not been able to by offering a clear connection to the small Texas town and offering vivid detail of the sheer loss of the 19 children and two teachers gunned down in last month's mass shooting. An American woman who prosecutors say led an all-female battalion of Islamic State militants in Syria has pleaded guilty in a case that a prosecutor called a first-of-its-kind in the United States. Allison Fluke-Ekren broke down sobbing after admitting in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on Tuesday to conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. The charge carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence. Her guilty plea resolves a criminal case that came to light in January after Fluke-Ekren was brought to the U.S. to face accusations that she led an Islamic State unit of women and young girls and trained them in the use of automatic rifles, grenades and suicide belts. The United States and its Asian allies have flown dozens of fighter jets over waters surrounding the Korean Peninsula in a show of force as their diplomats discussed a coordinated response to a possibly imminent North Korean nuclear test. The flights came as U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman traveled to Seoul for discussions with South Korea and Japanese officials over the gathering North Korean threat and warned of a “swift and forceful” counter response if the North proceeds with a nuclear test explosion. While Washington has vowed to push for stronger sanctions if North Korea conducts a nuclear test, prospects for robust punitive measures are dim with a divided U.N. Security Council. Russia claims to have taken control of 97% of one of the two provinces that make up Ukraine's Donbas, bringing the Kremlin closer to its goal of fully capturing the eastern industrial heartland of coal mines and factories. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu says Moscow's forces hold nearly all of Luhansk province. And it appears that Russia now occupies roughly half of Donetsk province, according to Ukrainian officials and military analysts. Advanced DNA technology helped detectives link the cases of six women to a man accused of being the “pillowcase rapist” for a string of rapes back in the 1980s. Robert Koehler is currently jailed in Miami-Dade County, where he faces charges for assaulting a woman in the early '80s as well. Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony said Tuesday that Koehler may have committed 40 to 45 rapes, terrifying victims by breaking into their homes at night. He allegedly used a pillowcase or other fabric to cover his face — or their face — before assaulting them, tying them up and stealing items from their homes. Some cancer patients can safely skip radiation or chemotherapy after surgery. That's according to two new studies exploring shorter, gentler cancer care. Researchers are looking for ways to precisely predict which patients can avoid unneeded treatment to cut down on harmful side effects and unnecessary costs. One study used a blood test to determine which colon cancer patients could skip chemotherapy after surgery. The other study suggests some low-risk breast cancer patients can omit radiation after lumpectomy. The findings were discussed at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, which is wrapping up Tuesday in Chicago. The Department of Homeland Security says a looming Supreme Court decision on abortion, an increase of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border and the midterm elections are potential triggers for extremist violence over the next six months. DHS said Tuesday in the National Terrorism Advisory System bulletin that the U.S. was in a “heightened threat environment” already. It's the latest attempt by DHS to draw attention to the threat posed by domestic violent extremism. That's a shift from alerts about international terrorism that were a hallmark of DHS following its creation after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Jim Seals, who teamed with fellow musician “Dash” Crofts on such 1970s soft-rock hits as “Summer Breeze,” “Diamond Girl” and “We May Never Pass This Way Again,” has died at age 80. His death was announced Tuesday by several people including John Ford Coley, who had formed the ‘70s duo England Dan and John Ford Coley with Seals' older brother Dan. Seals and Darrell George “Dash” Crofts were Texas natives who had known each other since they were teenagers and had previously been in the Champs. They formed Seals and Crofts in the late 1960s. Target is canceling orders from suppliers, particularly for home goods and clothing, and it's slashing prices further to clear out amassed inventory ahead of the critical fall and holiday shopping seasons. The actions come after a pronounced spending shift by Americans, from investments in their homes to money spent on experience like travel, and nights out for dinner and other pre-pandemic routines. Shoppers are also focusing more on non-discretionary items like groceries as inflation makes them more selective. That's a change that arrived much faster than major retailers had anticipated. The speed at which Americans pivoted away from pandemic spending was laid bare in the most recent quarterly financial filings from a number of major retailers. Graeme McDowell says he accepts it is “incredibly polarizing” to join the Saudi-funded rebel golf tour. He even offered a reason why, citing the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. McDowell says, “Take the Khashoggi situation. We all agree that's reprehensible. Nobody is going to argue that fact.” The Saudi sovereign wealth fund is providing the hundreds of millions of dollars in sign-on fees and prize money that is enticing players away from the established tours and jeopardizing their participation in the majors and Ryder Cup. The head of the fund is accused of masterminding Khashoggi's murder. Authorities have announced a summer crackdown on crime in certain areas of Detroit. U.S. Attorney Dawn Ison says her prosecutors will focus on the city's 8th and 9th precincts and swiftly make decisions on charges. They'll work closely with Detroit police and federal agents. Ison says, “As temperatures rise, so does violence.” Ison says recent mass shootings in the U.S. are "horrible.” But she says urban violence still eclipses mass shootings. The condescension of older boyfriends, saying the quiet part out loud, sexual grift, calling the Seals family onto the (shag) carpet, vicarious embarrassment, and that time Sandy from Grease had too much tempranillo at the Christmas party and awked out big-time. What the Riff?!?
1976 - November: Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band “Night Moves”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 21, 2021 35:43

If Bob Seger sounds like he's experienced it all on his breakout album Night Moves, well, he kind of has.  Seger got his start in the music industry in 1961, and this album is his ninth studio album, though the first to credit the Silver Bullet Band on the album cover.  Many of the songs reflect on earlier times, successes and failures of the past, with a wistfulness.  Detroit native Robert Clark (aka Bob) Seger's music has been described as roots rock and heartland rock, and there are similarities between the blue collar sensibilities of Seger's music and others like Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp.  Segar had his first hit back in 1968 with "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man," but didn't follow up with hit singles afterwards.  He turned to working with backing bands, touring with Eric Clapton and joining with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section (who would play on four of the nine songs on Night Moves).  After forming the Silver Bullet Band in 1974 Segar began seeing some interest with singles like "Katmandu" and the release of the album "Live Bullet"  just prior to Night Moves.  However, Night Moves was the one that put him over the top where he would remain for the rest of the 70's and 80's.Many of the songs have a theme of remembering the past, including the title track.  Seger completed his "farewell tour" in 2019.  However, we still have an incredible catalogue of music available thanks to Bob Segar.  We hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane.  Night MovesSeger says his title track was inspired after watching the 1973 film, “American Graffiti,” and he realized HE had a story to tell about growing up, and an Italian girlfriend he had one summer. “Ain't it strange how the night moves?”  The change in seasons forms a metaphor for growing up - being young in the summertime, and looking back "with autumn closin' in."Rock and Roll Never Forgets“So you're a little bit older and a lot less bolder than you used to be…” Seger wrote this at the ripe old age of 31!  While only making it to number 41, this tribute to Rock & Roll and Chuck Berry has taken on a timelessness as a classic rock song.SunburstWe felt that the intro to this beautiful deep track has a similar sound and feel to “Dear Prudence” from the Beatles. There are two clear movements in the music from soft, to rocking, to soft again.  The song discusses an introverted performer on the stage, comparing him to entertainment in the Roman Colosseum.  Main StreetThe second single from the album,  Seger is again sharing a peek into his life growing up in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Anne Street was right off Main Street, and there was the pool hall and dancing girls with R&B bands playing on the weekends.  ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television series “The Muppet Show”)This variety show would draw in a number of A-list celebrities for an evening of entertainment with Kermit, Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, and the rest of the Muppets. STAFF PICKS:Tonight's The Night (Gonna Be Alright) by Rod StewartBrian features a seduction song from Rod Stewart, and it was actually banned by the BBC for the line "spread your wings and let me come inside."  Public demand eventually caused the ban to be lifted, and the song went to number 1 on both the UK and the US shortly thereafter.Jeans On by David DundasWayne brings us a song by British musician and actor David Dundas.  It was first featured as a television advertising jingle for Brutus Jeans, and the popularity of the commercial led to the recording of "Jeans On" as a full length song.  "It's the weekend, and I know that you're free so pull on your jeans and come on out with me."Nights Are Forever Without You by England Dan and John Ford ColeyBruce's staff pick is from Texas duo Dan Wayland (aka England Dan) Seals and John Edward (aka John Ford) Coley.  They originally had a hit with "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight," which was written by Parker McGee who also wrote "Nights Are Forever Without You."  Dan Seals would go on to a country career in the 1980's, scoring 11 number one country hits including "Meet Me In Montana."Blinded By The Light by Manfred Mann's Earth BandRob brings us  this hit originally written by Bruce Springsteen, but  finding fame through Manfred Mann's Earth Band.  Manfred Mann changed the lyrics slightly, and Springsteen has joked about confusion over the lyrics, claiming that “it was not until Manfred Mann rewrote the song to be about a feminine hygiene product that it became popular.”  This version hit number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Theme to the motion picture CarrieNothing like finishing out the podcast on a scary note!  The motion picture "Carrie" was released in November 1976.

This is the album that turned Fleetwood Mac into a household name.  Originally formed as a blues band in 1967, Fleetwood Mac had taken a turn to more pop-oriented music with their 10th and self-titled album in 1975.  This precursor to Rumors also saw the addition of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks to the band after the departure of guitarist Bob Welch.  The band toured and promoted that album heavily and their work paid off.  But it would be this eleventh album, Rumors, which would solidify their fame.  The title was suggested by John McVie because he saw that the band members were writing about each other through the music. The band was all the walking wounded at the time.  Drummer Mick Fleetwood was divorcing, bassist John McVie and keyboardist Christine McVie were separated, and vocalist/guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and vocalist Stevie Nicks were breaking up.  All this drama poured into their music. While not every song was released as a single, virtually every song on the album is familiar based upon its rotation on FM radio.  There is a timelessness about Fleetwood Mac, and we mention in this podcast how their popularity crossed generations. We hope you enjoy this exploration of one of the most successful albums of the 70's.  Don't StopThis song was written by Christine McVie and is sung by Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie.  It was the third single released from the album.  It is an optimistic look at things after Christine's separation from John McVie to whom she was married for 8 years.  Christine McVie was a session keyboardist when Fleetwood Mac first formed, and married John shortly thereafter.  Bill Clinton used this music as his theme song during his 1992 Presidential campaign, and persuaded the group to reform and perform this song at his inaugural ball.DreamsThe second single from the album would be the highest charting song, going to number 1.  Stevie Nicks wrote it, and handles lead vocals.  It is about all the drama the members were going through - divorce, separation, and break-ups.  The band was not all that impressed when they first heard it due to its simplicity in chord structure, but fortunately they decided to include it on the album after all.Gold Dust WomanStevie Nicks also wrote and sang this track, which was not released as a single, but received attention at the B-side to “You Make Loving Fun.”  Nicks has described it as about Los Angeles, a bad relationship, and, perhaps most fameously, as a metaphor for cocaine. The ChainClearly the heaviest track on the album, it is the only track on the album for which all five band members received songwriting credit.  This is another song in which the relationship struggles of the band are prominent.  It was a literal combination of older material, and the intro was spliced in from an old Buckingham Nicks song using a razor blade to cut and splice the tapes.  Stevie Nicks wrote most of the lyrics, and Buckingham sings lead. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from “Sanford and Son” by Quincy JonesThe comedy series starring Redd Foxx came to an end in February 1977. STAFF PICKS:“Undercover Angel” by Alan O'DayWayne brings us the best known song by singer-songwriter Alan O'Day, who had written songs previously for Helen Reddy and The Righteous Brothers.  He also relays a tragedy in his life where he won a Charlie's Angels poster that was never delivered!“The Things We Do For Love” by 10 ccBrian's staff pick features great harmonies and a story about a guy walking in the rain to his girlfriend's house.  "like walking in the rain and the snow when there's nowhere to go, and you're feelin' like a part of you is dying."“The First Cut is The Deepest” by Rod StewartRob's staff pick was originally written by Cat Stevens; but this rendition is one of the better known, as sung by “Rod the Mod” Stewart. The Scottish-born singer was known for a high sense of fashion...and football (the soccer type).“So Into You” by the Atlanta Rhythm SectionBruce features the first single released of ARS's album "A Rock and Roll Alternative."  This was their biggest hit off the album, and would kick off several years of success for the band running through this and the next two albums. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:“Nights Are Forever Without You” by Bob JamesThis instrumental take on the hit from England Dan and Jon Ford Coley is off jazz pianist Bob James' fourth album, BJ4, which was released in this month.

(A.) “It was hot outside.”(B.) “The angry sun glared down at me.”Which of those sentences do you feel was more interesting?Personification is a technique used by writers and speakers to excite the imaginations of their readers and listeners. Personification gives human attributes to non-human things. Twenty-five years ago I wrote, “As Edmund Hillary surveyed the horizon from the peak of Mount Everest, he monitored the time on a wristwatch that had been specifically designed to withstand the fury of the world's most angry mountain….” Later in that same ad, the jeweler says, “You'll find your Rolex waiting patiently for you to come and pick it up… at Justice Jewelers.” Here are some other examples of personification: “The shattered water made a misty din. Great waves looked over others coming in and thought of doing something to the shore that water never did to land before.” – Robert Frost, opening lines of Once By the Pacific  “Have you got a brook in your little heart Where bashful flowers blow, And blushing birds go down to drink, And shadows tremble so?” – Emily Dickinson, Have You Got A Brook In Your Little Heart? You may have noticed that both of those examples were by famous poets. This was neither an accident nor a coincidence. I have long believed that good poets are the best teachers of powerful ad writing. A poet can change what we think and feel, and do so in a brief, tight economy of words. Did I hear you say “songwriter”? What is a songwriter but a poet who also writes music? I consider personification to be part of a larger category called Magical Thinking, a type of writing characterized by elements of the fantastic – woven with a deadpan sense of presentation – into an otherwise true story.Magical thinking is best evidenced in a writing style known as Magical Realism, and it is best exemplified by Gabriel Garcia Marquez: “As soon as José Arcadio closed the bedroom door the sound of a pistol shot echoed through the house. A trickle of blood came out under the door, crossed the living room, went out into the street, continued on in a straight line across the uneven terraces, went down steps and climbed over curbs, passed along the Street of the Turks, turned a corner to the right and another to the left, made a right angle at the Buendía house, went in under the closed door, crossed through the parlor, hugging the walls so as not to stain the rugs, went on to the other living room, made a wide curve to avoid the dining-room table, went along the porch with the begonias, and passed without being seen under Amaranta's chair as she gave an arithmetic lesson to Aureliano José, and went through the pantry and came out in the kitchen, where Úrsula was getting ready to crack thirty-six eggs to make bread.” “'Holy Mother of God!' Úrsula shouted.” – Gabriel García Márquez, One Hundred Years of Solitude, ch. 7 But not everyone has the gene that allows for magical thinking.Consider this famous song by England Dan and John Ford Coley. Do you remember these lines? “I'm not talking 'bout movin' in and I don't want to change your life but there's a warm wind blowin' the stars around And I'd really love to see you tonight.” People who lack the magical thinking gene hear: “…but there's a warm wind blowing, the stars are out,
and I'd really love to see you tonight.” The value of magical thinking is that it stimulates the imagination and puts listeners in a frame of mind to consider new and different things. Magical thinking does not appeal to the linear, sequential, deductive-reasoning left hemispheres of our brains. It appeals to our right hemisphere, which does not separate fantasy from reality; that's the left brain's job. The realm of the right brain is a land of infinite possibilities, where anything and everything can happen. Film franchises such as The Hunger Games, Star Wars, Star Trek,...

Ahh the 70s. That period of burgeoning hard rock and soft, smooth sounds. Among the many artists filling the airwaves with ear candy were England Dan and John Ford Coley. The successful duo racked up half a dozen or so hits in the second half of the decade.  Songs like "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight" and "Nights are Forever Without You" provide touchpoints to simpler times, back when AM radio was king.  The pair even scored a hit with a TODD song!  But, like many 70’s duos, the partnership ended in the early 80s. The final nail in the coffin was a disagreement over one song; a song that Dan goes on to record solo for country radio.  In this conversation, JFC discusses the glory days, how Dan's death in 2009 affected him, how Yacht Rock has given him a new lease on life, and his latest album Eclectic. So, kick back, relax, put on your sailor hat and prepare to set sail with one of the titans of soft rock. All aboard! johnfordcoley.com

Randy Goodrum has a gift. And for over thirty years, he’s shared it with us all in the form of hit songs that are timeless. His compositions have been recorded by artists such as Anne Murray, England Dan and John Ford Coley, Toto, Chicago, Steve Perry, Al Jarreau, Johnny Lange, Steve Lukather and, well, this list goes on and on. Goodrum’s extensive work with Chet Atkins early on helped to open the door to opportunities that would blossom for the rest of his career. But his success has not been a consequence of luck. It took the classically trained pianist about ten years before a songwriting effort would be recorded. He’s achieved an elite status in the world of songwriters and his accomplishments are as heralded as such names as Burt Bacharach, Carole King, Paul Williams, Carol Bayer Sager, and Paul Simon. Inside MusiCast is pleased to welcome an icon in the music business, Randy Goodrum.
