For the 100th ride around this unhinged wheel of nightmares, Arthur and Steve decided subtlety can go cry in a corner. They show up fully transformed into Snagz and Mr. Sweets, stomping into the studio like two escaped fever dreams ready to break the internet. This episode goes live with all the chaos the Dark Carousel faithful expect. Mr. Sweets (Steve) comes in swinging his bat like he's conducting an orchestra of fear. Snagz (Arthur) looks like he crawled out of a meat locker, cackling like someone dared him to behave. Spoiler: he didn't.Then Arthur, in a moment of spectacular self-sabotage, hooks a TENS machine to “the boys.” It goes exactly how you think. He twitches, jerks, convulses, and basically Irish-step-dances in his chair while Steve tries not to pass out from laughing. The viewers get a live-action reminder that Arthur's pain threshold is questionable at best, nonexistent at worst.Between the costumes, the electric chaos, and the two of them roasting each other like it's a competitive sport, this episode isn't just a milestone. It's a full-blown circus riot.100 episodes. No filters. No brakes. No dignity. This carousel will never stop spinning.
New figures from the Residential Tenancies Board are stark: the number of eviction notices issued by landlords in the third quarter of this year increased by 35 per cent on the same period last year. This at a time when rents have never been higher. The reason given most frequently by landlords is that they are selling up. Why?New rent regulations which improve the rights of long-term tenants are set be introduced in March 2026. Could this be the reason landlords are getting out of the market? And why are small landlords more likely to want to exit the market than big institutional investors who dominate the private rental sector?Irish Times housing reporter Niamh Towey has talked to landlords and estate agents to get a clearer picture.Presented by Bernice Harrison. Irish consumers are being targeted by increasingly sophisticated online scams, according to a new set of case studies released by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC). The warning comes as Black Friday and Cyber Monday kick off the busiest shopping period of the year, creating prime opportunities for scammers to steal from unsuspecting shoppers. With recent research revealing that almost 40% surveyed expect to make a purchase in the Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales, the CCPC is advising consumers to be extra vigilant and to stop and think before rushing into making a purchase. The case studies, which date between November 2024 and August 2025, reveal losses ranging from €42 to €20,000 and highlight the wide range of methods used to scam consumers. These include fake websites, phishing emails, fraudulent job offers, rental accommodation scams, and investment fraud. The CCPC is warning consumers to be especially wary of ads on social media, as scammers are using convincing clones of trusted websites and fake local shops to trick shoppers. To stay safe, always purchase through the retailer's official website or app rather than clicking on the social media link. Stop, search and stay safe To help consumers shop safely during the peak shopping season, the CCPC advises following these three simple steps: Stop: Scammers often create urgency to pressure quick decisions. If something feels off or too good to be true, stop and think before engaging further. Search: Remember that logos, "about us" pages and imagery on websites can be fabricated. Always take a minute to check sites like Trustpilot or Reddit for independent reviews. Stay safe: Watch out for common red flags, including unusually large discounts - "up to 80% off", unfamiliar websites, recently created social media profiles, and all five-star reviews. Always use a credit card, debit card or trusted payment provider, rather than a direct bank transfer. Grainne Griffin, director of communications at the CCPC, said: "As the busiest shopping season of the year kicks off, it's important that consumers avoid rushing into online purchases and transactions. Online scams have become more and more sophisticated, using convincing images and stories and carefully tailoring their ads to seem like they're a trustworthy business. "For the sake of your finances and your safety, take care when shopping online. Don't let tactics like time-sensitive offers or countdown clocks pressure you into making a decision you might regret. "Do your research, take your time, and don't take risks, no matter how tempting the deal - you can lose an awful lot of money in just a few clicks. Always use a credit card, debit card or trusted payment provider like PayPal, rather than a direct bank transfer." What to do if you've been scammed when shopping online If you think you've been scammed, contact your bank or payment provider immediately. You may be able to initiate a chargeback and get your money back, and you may need to freeze your card to prevent further money being taken. An Garda Síochána are responsible for pursuing scam operators, so contact your local Garda office and report it. Renaissance English History Podcast: A Show About the Tudors
Today we're looking at the Tudor-era women who stepped into roles normally reserved for knights, from Grace O'Malley leading a fleet on the Irish coast to Bess of Hardwick managing the Shrewsbury power base during rebellion, Mary of Guise governing a kingdom at war, Elizabeth I claiming her authority at Tilbury, and more. They were never formally knighted, but their actions came remarkably close. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ireland has no shortage of stately manors, but as Irish Stew hosts Martin Nutty and John Lee learned, no other historic property has a legacy like Co. Offaly's Birr Castle Demesne, which for generations has been an incubator of breakthroughs in engineering and science. With local historian and educator Brian Kennedy as their guide, the podcasters share the story of the Victorian-era, steampunk-style construction of timber, iron, and stonework that was the world's largest telescope from 1845 to 1917. Built by William Parsons, the 3rd Earl of Rosse, “The Leviathan of Parsonstown” as it became known is a 20-foot-tall engineering marvel that enabled the Earl to map light-years distant nebulae with stunning accuracy that rivals modern Hubble telescope images.Brian points out that the Parsons family's 400-year legacy includes what's thought to be one of the world's earliest surviving suspension bridges on the grounds, Charles Parsons' invention of the steam turbine, and the work of photography pioneer Mary Wilmer Field, the 3rd Countess of Rosse. Her 1850s glass plate photographs are preserved in Ireland's Historic Science Centre at Birr, which not only tells the Birr science story in historical artifacts and interactive displays, but that of Ireland as well. And Birr is still writing that science story today as it hosts the Irish station of the Europe-wide LOFAR radio telescope network, which in 2018 observed for the first time a billion-year-old red-dwarf, flare star.Add botany and horticulture to the science mix with multi-generational botanical treasures on display across the expansive grounds including 17th-century box hedges (among the world's tallest), specimens from China and South America, and Victorian glasshouses under restoration.“There's something in bloom every day of the year, throughout the whole year of plants from right throughout the world.” Brian says. The conversation wraps with a discussion of the town's transformation from "Parsonstown" back to its original Irish name, its connection to St. Brendan's monastery, the charming town's rich Georgian heritage, and things to see and do “off the beaten craic” in Birr's environs. But for Brian, it all starts with the Birr Castle Demesne, “Come early in the morning because one day is just not enough to take in all that the castle has to offer,” he advises.Next week Irish Stew makes one more stop in Co. Ireland adopted a policy of neutrality in 1939 at the outbreak of World War II. Since then and even as a member of the EU, neutrality has been a hallmark of the nation's foreign policy. But in light of the Russian war in Ukraine and a vast transformation of the Irish economy with Big Pharma, High Tech and Big Data from the US will national security concerns force a step up in national defense spending ?

Allen covers the debate over Chinese wind turbines in Europe, from data security concerns and unfair subsidies to the risk of trading one energy dependency for another. Sign up now for Uptime Tech News, our weekly email update on all things wind technology. This episode is sponsored by Weather Guard Lightning Tech. Learn more about Weather Guard’s StrikeTape Wind Turbine LPS retrofit. Follow the show on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Linkedin and visit Weather Guard on the web. And subscribe to Rosemary Barnes’ YouTube channel here. Have a question we can answer on the show? Email us! Wind energy is one of Europe’s great strengths. Providing twenty percent of European electricity today. Over half by 2050. That’s the plan. Competitive. Homegrown. Quick to build. Almost every wind turbine spinning in Europe today was made in Europe. By European companies. Assembled in European factories. Hundreds of factories across the continent make components for wind turbines. Over Four hundred thousand Europeans punch the clock in wind energy. Every new turbine generates sixteen million euros of economic activity. And this week, proof of that investment. In Germany, the He Dreiht offshore wind farm just sent its first power into the grid. Nine hundred sixty megawatts. Germany’s largest offshore wind farm. VESTAS turbines standing one hundred forty-two meters tall. Sixty-four turbines total. All commissioned by summer 2026. NILS DE BAAR of VESTAS said the fifteen megawatt turbine sets new standards in offshore wind power. European technology. European manufacturing. European energy. In Ireland, more European investment. SSE and FUTURENERGY IRELAND tapped NORDEX to build the Wind Farm in County Donegal. Twelve turbines. Sixty megawatts. One hundred thirty-eight million dollars. Forty thousand Irish homes powered when those blades turn in 2027. And in Scotland and Italy, floating wind is consolidating. NADARA is acquiring BLUEFLOAT ENERGY’s stake in ten floating offshore projects. BROADSHORE. BELLROCK. SINCLAIR. SCARABEN. Nearly three gigawatts of floating wind now under single European ownership. Today’s wind farms save Europe one hundred billion cubic meters of gas imports every year. In Britain alone, consumers saved one hundred four billion pounds between 2010 and 2023. That’s after factoring in the cost of building the wind farms. Wind means lower energy bills. Wind means independence. But here comes the temptation. Chinese turbines are cheaper. Much cheaper. And in times of strained budgets and rising costs… That’s hard to ignore. GILES DICKSON is the CEO of WINDEUROPE. He says… Think about what you’re buying. The European Commission launched an inquiry last year. They suspect Chinese manufacturers offer prices and payment terms backed by unfair government subsidies. European manufacturers can’t legally offer the same deferred payment deals. OECD rules won’t allow it. Then there’s energy security. Europe just weaned itself off Russian gas. Painfully. Expensively. Three years later, high energy prices still drag on the economy. Does Europe want another dangerous dependency? This time on imported equipment instead of imported fuel? And as Giles points out – a modern wind turbine has hundreds of sensors. Hundreds. Gathering performance data. Monitoring operations. European law prohibits exporting that data to China. But Chinese law allows Beijing to require Chinese companies to send data home from overseas operations. There’s a contradiction. Someone’s going to break the law. And those sensors? They don’t just collect data. They can control equipment. The European Union and NATO are voicing concerns. The wind industry has invested over fourteen billion euros in new and expanded European factories in just the last two years. That’s commitment. That’s confidence. And the rest of the world is taking notice. In Japan, FAIRWIND just signed a strategic partnership with WIND ENERGY PARTNERS in YOKOHAMA. MATT CROSSAN, FAIRWIND’s Asia Pacific Director, said Japan’s wind sector is still young compared to Europe. But government support and investment are driving expansion. They want European expertise. European experience. European standards. Wind energy is the last strategic clean tech sector with a truly European footprint. The last one. Solar panels. Batteries. Electric vehicles. Those have already migrated elsewhere. But Wind remains. For now. Four hundred forty thousand workers. Two hundred fifty factories. Fourteen billion euros in new investment. One hundred billion cubic meters of gas imports avoided every year. Germany’s largest offshore wind farm now feeding the grid. Ireland building new capacity. Scotland consolidating floating wind. Japan seeking European partners. Europe can buy cheaper today. Or build stronger tomorrow. GILES DICKSON is sounding the alarm. But, will Europe listen? That's the wind industry news on the 1st of December 2025.
Imvizar, an Irish-based augmented reality firm specialising in spatial storytelling, has teamed up with Snap Inc., the company behind Snapchat and Spectacles, to bring a public Spectacles experience in Ireland, debuting at Dublin City Council Dublin Winter Lights in Merrion Square Park from 1-21 December. For three weeks only, visitors will have hands-on access to the fifth generation of Spectacles which are currently available to AR creators and developers through the Spectacles Developer Program. This experience brings emerging AR technology into a live environment in a way that feels intuitive, magical and rooted in story, offering a new medium of entertainment and a unique chance for the public to experience the future of storytelling. The partnership brings together Imvizar's spatial storytelling expertise and the power of Snap Inc.'s Spectacles to introduce a new immersive layer to one of Dublin's most popular Christmas time events. Imvizar's deep understanding of immersive design and real-world environments has enabled Spectacles to be showcased safely and meaningfully at scale. The experience was designed and developed by Imvizar using Spectacles, and supported by Dublin City Council's Smart City team, marking an innovative addition to the festival programme and positions the city as a global leader in immersive public festival experiences. See Dublin City Council Dublin Winter Lights through a new lens Inside a dedicated zone in Merrion Square Park, visitors aged 13+ are invited to try Spectacles and explore a new layer of magic brought to life through Imvizar's spatial storytelling. With Spectacles, participants step into a winter wonderland called The Light We Bright, a shared AR experience created by Imvizar that brings festive scenes directly into the park. Using simple gestures, visitors collect glowing stars that appear around them as if the environment is responding in real time. When enough stars are gathered, a Christmas tree forms in front of the group, followed by falling snow and constellations that swirl around their hands. Designed as a Connected Lens for groups of up to five people at a time, the activation transforms Merrion Square into an interactive digital layer that reacts to visitor movement and brings them closer to the magic of Christmas. Access is limited to participants aged 13 and over, in line with Spectacle's platform policies. Partnership with Spectacles Imvizar is a leading innovator in spatial storytelling, shaping how wearable AR can transform public spaces into living stories that unfold around the people who step into them. This partnership with Spectacles marks the company's first step in bringing spatial storytelling to wider public audiences through wearable AR, offering a glimpse of how this technology can add meaningful layers to shared experiences, starting here in Dublin. Michael Guerin, founder and CEO of Imvizar, said: "Spatial storytelling is at the centre of everything we do. We wanted to create a story that brings a real winter wonderland experience to people and moves them from simply watching to actively shaping the moment. Using AR glasses becomes less about technology and more about stepping into an immersive experience. Working with Dublin City Council and Snap on Ireland's first AR glasses experience has been a wonderful opportunity to introduce something new to Dublin City Council Dublin Winter Lights." Qi Pan, Director of Computer Vision Engineering, Spectacles, Snap Inc. said: "We are excited to team up with Imvizar and Dublin Smart City to turn Merrion Square Park into an AR winter wonderland. Augmented Reality is transforming how we experience and celebrate cultural moments - Spectacles, our AR glasses, will usher in new ways for people to interact with the world around us. In this experience, visitors will collect glowing stars to magically conjure a Christmas tree into existence through Spectacles with their friends and family during this festive season." N...
The scale and sophistication of fraudulent advertising and AI-generated scams on social media are growing rapidly, making it harder than ever for people to know what's real. New research from Visa in Ireland reveals that people who mistake fake AI-generated content for real are six times more likely to be tricked by scammers online than those who don't (73% vs. 12%). This highlights how digital misinformation directly increases vulnerability and underscores the importance of collective action to protect consumers and restore trust in digital platforms. In Ireland, Visa found that people who are affected by online scams typically lose €124.50 per incident (median amount), costing the Irish economy an estimated €71.8 million annually. The impact goes beyond financial loss, causing emotional distress, increased anxiety and reduced productivity. On average, victims of online scams spend around 8.9 days resolving the issue, which is 44% of the working month. The way people engage with content online plays a major role. Those who share a post without checking its accuracy first are five times more likely to be targeted and impacted by online scams compared to those who tend to take a moment to verify it first (35% vs. 6%). Every day online habits - such as skimming headlines, resharing without verifying and trusting AI-generated content - are creating new vulnerabilities that scammers are quick to exploit: 59% have believed online content was genuine, only to later discover it was an AI-generated fake Over a third (38%) rarely read beyond a headline before forming an opinion Almost a quarter (23%) have reshared a post without checking its accuracy The ripple effect of online scams As online scams grow more sophisticated and widespread, this shift in consumer behaviour is having a tangible impact on the wider economy. Almost half (42%) have changed how they shop online after being scammed, and one in two people (50%) targeted by online shopping scams say they now avoid shopping with smaller or unfamiliar brands. This is having a particularly significant impact on small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which account for 99.8% of Ireland's business population and depend heavily on consumer confidence to survive and grow. Stepping up the fight against fraud Visa is stepping up the fight against social media scams - combining decades of experience with cutting-edge technology and working closely with banks, retailers, and digital platforms to restore trust in online commerce. AI has been central to Visa's approach to fraud prevention. For over 30 years, the company has used AI-powered tools to help keep payments secure and stay ahead of evolving threats. In the last five years alone, Visa has invested $12 billion in technology, including building smart, AI-powered systems that detect suspicious behaviour in real time and stop scams before they reach people. Awareness is as critical as technology. With almost two in five (39%) people believing AI will make scams harder to spot on social media, Visa is taking proactive steps to close that gap. Tackling fraud requires a united front, and Visa is committed to collaborating across the ecosystem to set new standards for consumer protection. By working closely with banks, retailers and platforms to ensure consumers have the right advice at their fingertips, Visa is helping people recognise an AI-generated scam, understand how they work, and stay safe in an increasingly AI-driven digital world. Because the more informed people are, the harder it is for scammers to succeed. Visa is calling on all stakeholders - platforms, banks, retailers and policymakers - to work together to raise the bar for digital trust and consumer protection. Conor Langford, Visa Country Manager for Ireland said: "AI is transforming how we live, shop, work and connect, but it's also reshaping the landscape for fraud. Scammers are using the same technology that brings us innovation to deceive and exploit consumers, blurrin...

Áiteanna ar cíos: ardú 35 faoin gcéad ar an líon fógraí imeachta. There was a 35% increase in the number of eviction notices given by landlords to tenants in the third quarter of the year compared to the same period last year, according to new figures from the Residential Tenancies Board. Bhí ardú de 35 faoin gcéad ar an líon fógraí imeachta a thug tiarnaí talún do thionóntaí sa tríú ráithe den bhliain i gcomórtas leis an tréimhse chéanna anuraidh, de réir figiúirí nua ón mBord um Thionóntachtaí Cónaithe. 5,405 eviction notices were issued to tenants between July and September this year, and 61% of these notices were issued on the basis that the landlord intended to sell the property. Is 5,405 fógra imeachta a tugadh do thionóntaí idir Iúil agus Meán Fómhair i mbliana, agus is ar an mbonn go raibh rún ag an tiarna talún an mhaoin a dhíol a tugadh 61 faoin gcéad de na fógraí sin. It is believed that the significant increase in eviction notices is related to new rules that are due to be implemented next spring and are being frowned upon by landlords who only have one or two places to rent. Meastar go bhfuil baint ag an ardú suntasach atá tagtha ar fhógraí imeachta le rialacha nua atá le cur i bhfeidhm an t-earrach seo chugainn agus a bhfuil col leo ag tiarnaí talún nach bhfuil acu le ligean ar cíos ach áit nó dhó. As with these new rules, for example, a rent increase will be required to be equal to the increase in the rate of inflation, that is, or an annual increase of a maximum of 2%, whichever is lower. Mar leis na rialacha nua sin, cuir i gcás, ceanglófar ardú ar chíos den ardú ar ráta an bhoilsicthe, é sin nó ardú bliaintúil de 2 faoin gcéad ar a mhéid, pé acu is ísle. According to Rosemary Steen of the Residential Tenancies Board, while the increase in the number of eviction notices is a cause for concern, it is common for landlords to exit the rental sector. Dar le Rosemary Steen ón mBord um Thionóntachtaí Cónaithe cé gur údar imní an t-ardú ar an líon fógraí imeachta gur den ghnás é tiarnaí talún ag imeacht ón earnáil cíosa. Housing Minister James Browne said the new figures should take into account the increase in the number of tenancies despite the number of landlords falling. Dúirt an tAire Tithíochta James Browne nár mhór aird a thabhairt sna figiúirí nua ar an ardú atá tagtha ar an líon tionóntachtaí in ainneoin an líon tiarnaí talún a bheith ag ísliú. Ireland has become the first country in the world to introduce labels linking alcohol with cancer and liver disease. Some producers began re-labelling their products this year and they're already on sale in pubs and supermarkets across the country. The rest of the drinks industry was due to follow suit next year but the Irish government has decided to delay the compulsory introduction of these labels until 2028. They blame uncertainty with world trade, but critics believe it's the result of lobbying by the drinks industry which claims the labels are both excessive and fearmongering. Ireland has a complex relationship with drinking, with its pubs venerated in many parts of the world and huge brands such as Guinness and Jamesons major exports. But alcoholism has been a long running issue putting a strain on the Irish health service. While overall alcohol consumption in Ireland is falling, binge drinking and drinking amongst teenagers and young people is increasing. Are Irish people and the country as a whole developing a new relationship with drink, and if so, which direction will win out? Katie Flannery heads out with the drinkers and non-drinkers in Dublin to find out. This episode of The Documentary comes to you from Assignment, investigations and journeys into the heart of global events.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geI5r-tvCK8&t=1s Keith Bennett, an old friend and comrade of Harpal's, and leader of the "Friends of Socialist China" campaign, gives a moving message of condolence. This video was shot in January 2025 at Harpal Brar's memorial service in Bolivar Hall, London. It was a moving tribute and celebration of his life, held with his friends and family, representatives of Socialist nations and fraternal political organisations. Many comrades spoke in moving and generous terms, giving solidarity with his family and party, and paying tribute to his political contribution. We will share the messages of all the comrades who spoke at the service. Harpal Brar was the inspirer and founding Chairman on the Communist Party of Great Britain (Marxist-Leninist). He was a lecturer in Law, a barrister, a historian, a marxist scholar, theorist, thinker and teacher. Harpal was one of the foremost leaders of the British working class, and the Indian working class in Britain. He was a great leader of the world communist movement, holding aloft the torch of reason, of proletarian class consciousness and struggle in the dark days after the collapse of the USSR - when the imperialist bourgeoisie were riding high and proclaiming their rotten and parasitic system to be "the end of history". You can read his full obituary here: https://www.lalkar.org/article/4613/h... And find his books here: https://shop.thecommunists.org/produc... He was the editor of the paper of the Indian Workers' Association, and the anti-imperialist workers' journal LALKAR, which can be found here: https://www.lalkar.org Harpal played a role in many of the great liberation struggles of his time, from Zimbabwe and South Africa, Vietnam and Korea, Palestine and the Middle East to the great anti-imperialist cause of Irish reunification and national liberation. And of course he struggled tirelessly to solve the central question of the liberation of the working class from capitalist exploitation and imperialism. Harpal wrote extensively on the question of proletarian revolution and womens liberation. Harpal's criticism of the Labour Party as an imperialist party of Social Democracy is essential reading for all British workers. He wrote on Indian, Zimbabwean, Korean and Vietnamese national liberation, on bourgeois nationalism, black separatism and identity politics. He wrote of course extensively on the great revolutionary movements of the Soviet people and of China, and he wrote on the historical roots of Zionism and imperialism in the Middle East with specific reference to the cause of the Palestinian people for national liberation and self determination. Harpal was undoubtedly a great disciple of Marx and Lenin, and recognised that the Great Socialist October Revolution in Russia as a watershed of cultural enlightenment and freedom for Humanity. Harpal's critique of Trotskyism, his defence of the revolutionary teaching and leadership of Joseph Stalin, and his critique of Khrushchevism and revisionism that caused the downfall of Soviet Socialism is among the lasting theoretical contributions he bequeathed to the communist movement. We are grateful and moved by all of the tributes from his friends and comrades - that flowed to us even before we could speak to any but our closest comrades and family. To all of Harpal's comrades and loved ones: we are sorry for your loss too. We are united in our grief. And our determination to carry on his work. Which is all of our work. The Party was Harpal's wider family in every sense. And remains ours. If Harpal could say one thing to us it would be: “guard the party as you guard the apple of your eye.” He struggled to found and build it in the most difficult conjunction of circumstances, after the fall of the once mighty USSR. It is a great gift - the best of British - that he leaves us. A lutta continua!
