Ever wondered what it's like to be Santa Claus beyond the holiday season? In this episode of The Business Ownership Podcast - Christmas Special I interviewed Santa Ed Taylor. In 2013, Santa Ed became a Brand Ambassador for Hello Santa, a video visit app. As their Brand Ambassador, he made appearances on the Today Show, QVC, Tube-A-Thon, and many other TV and internet shows and events. His appearance with Rob Dyrdek on his MTV show "Ridiculousness" in 2013 put him on the map nationally as a Santa Claus actor. Appearing with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg in a trailer for Daddy's Home 2 also helped. Booking national commercials for Kohl's, Band-Aid, Reddi Wip, Overstock, and Chrysler, and an award-winning regional commercial for Meijer's cemented it; Santa Ed was a bonafide Santa actor. In the Chrysler commercial, Santa Ed played a sales manager who looked an awful lot like Santa Claus. He gets recognized for that one often. Santa Ed loves it when someone asks, "Were you the Santa in that car commercial, the one wearing a tie?"Santa Ed has had many amazing experiences since then, such as appearing on the Jimmy Kimmel Show, the Steve Harvey Show, Nickelodeon, and much more. He has also attended many celebrity and company parties, such as those for Facebook, Pinterest, JibJab, Nickelodeon, Mattel Toys, the Lakers, the Rams, and others. Santa Ed has been featured in TV shows, commercials, and even a music video with Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton. In 2015, Santa Ed started a Santa School, now called the Worldwide Santa Claus Network. In this final bonus Walled Culture podcast episode - recorded mid-2022 and kept under wraps as a special 1st anniversary episode, we welcome Fred von Lohmann, former Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and Google copyright counsel. Our conversation starts with recalling how he got intrigued by copyright, crediting John Perry Barlow, and explaining how he was at the right juncture to become a tech enthusiast. Fred talks about his role at EFF during what was a unique time from a copyright perspective, characterised by pivotal court cases in the 2000s. He looks back at the impact and effects of the rights holders' battle against peer-to-peer (P2P) technology. Their fierce resistance against anything related to P2P, in his view, crippled the potential transition towards a decentralised Internet back then. He did see one silver lining from the aftermath: the P2P revolution opened music fans' eyes to what could be, pressuring the music industry to start meeting consumers' demand. Fred highlights the Digital Millennium Copyright Act's (DMCA) (invisible) role in shaping our daily lives. On the one hand, the DMCA gave a legal justification to rights holders' control over technology beyond the copyright realm by providing legal protections for Digital Rights Management (DRM). This has impacted various types of content, be it (now old-school) DVDs, eBooks or games. On the other, the DMCA boosted the Internet's success through the safe harbour regime, offering a shelter from the ‘open sea' with hurricanes of lawsuits. The latter troubled rights holders, leading Fred to discuss the emergence of (imperfect) copyright filters. In this context, he touches upon Google's Content ID, rights holder abuses, and the EU Copyright Directive's questionable filtering obligations. He puts forward a crucial, yet unanswered, question in this debate: “how do you build filters that are fair to users and also don't constrict creativity too much?” Finally, Fred briefly shares his insights on how copyright intersects with competition and innovation, especially in the context of software interfaces. In his closing remarks, he echoes some of Cory Doctorow's wisdom, as he emphasises the need to think about copyright's impact on fans and innovators.

Is it Trump's inaugural day or the beginning of the end? It's Mom's 76th birthday so I sent her a silly JibJab card of her in a loincloth singing Hear Me Roar, by Katy Perry and I cried.   All day I've had this oppressive weight on my chest that feels like the days leading up to a hurricane, when I can't take a deep breath without feeling the impending doom, or in the days following 9/11 when it just felt like every news story was going to announce the end of life as we know it.   All day the headlines have been talking about how within an hour of taking office Trump had deleted all official reference to climate change.  Our Director of Outreach, Jen, had been trying to locate all the new Environmental Committee members who deal with protecting animals or the environment and was told, across the board, that the new appointees don't intend to have a person in that role.   I just don't know what kind of world this may become if our leaders are not inclined to protect the very infrastructure that supports all life on this planet.   Then there was just the insult to injury issues such as the attorney for Kenny Hetrick getting all nasty with me and demanding that I comply with her Ohio county order requiring that I let that man and his minions come onto our grounds.   Ms. x,   I am easily accessible via our website.  Anyone can find my email or cell phone number there, for that matter.  People so rarely spell my name right that I typically use Cat@BigCatRescue.org instead, so it's a little obnoxious that you are making so much of nothing.   As for the Hetricks visiting, I am not convinced that your local order has any authority over the way I do business.  I've seen the conditions the Hetricks kept these cats in and my opinion of them is that they are publicity hounds with no interest in the wellbeing of the cats.   There is no release form that I feel would adequately protect me from a slip and fall type "accident" that the Hetrick's might file, just to keep their names in the press.  Under my USDA license, no member of the public is allowed behind the barricade, so I couldn't let them close to the cats, even if I were inclined to do so.   For the cats,   Carole Baskin, CEO of Big Cat Rescue   "Judge me by the enemies I have made."  - Franklin D. On this 245th episode of "Marketing Today," host Alan Hart speaks with Mauro Gatti, the chief creative officer at JibJab. Gatti is driven by his love for creativity and a desire to use that creativity to make the world a better place for all living beings that call this planet home. We start our conversation by diving into Gatti's life growing up in Northern Italy, an area full of workaholics, where he began working in his uncle's butcher shop as a 10-year-old boy. Though he grew up in a small town, Gatti believes that "the best part of Italy is the drive between different cities because there are so many different gems" and "driving around is a great way to discover the real soul of Italy." Gatti then discusses his meteoric rise in the creative advertising industry that took him from creating artwork for CDs in Italy to his current position as the chief creative officer for JibJab in Los Angeles, California. "We all have a gift. Maradona had that gift, Michael Angelo had that gift," and Gatti's gift is being a creative person. JibJab believes that "creativity can inspire and mobilize people," an important concept in a year that has brought the world to a halt. Gatti also discusses The Happy Broadcast project in which he does his best to promote the good things that are happening in the world while media outlets seem only to promote the bad. "The challenge is not to erase the past; it's just to create a new present!"   Highlights from this week's "Marketing Today": Mauro grew up in a small town out in the country in Northern Italy, a very different place than what most people think of Italy. 1:55 Growing up in an area where everyone was a workaholic, Mauro's dad taught him how to make a living at only 10-years-old. 3:00 Alan knows first-hand that Italy looks very different depending on where you are, having proposed to his wife there. 5:52 Mauro believes that the most amazing part of Italy is the drive between cities because you get to see everything that is not mainstream. 7:10 Besides a short time when he wanted to be a doctor, Mauro has always been passionate about commercial design and creativity. 9:08 At the age of 15, Mauro created some illustrations for CDs, which was his first creative position. 10:30 When most advertising agencies in Europe were still using the same old methods, Mauro saw an opportunity to start a digital advertising agency. 11:23 With the creation of the first iPhone, Mauro's digital agency became one of Italy's first to create apps. 12:27 After spending his entire life in Italy, Mauro decided to move to California to lead Story Bots' digital expansion. 13:48 The creators of Story Bot asked Mauro to work on JibJab before selling the company to Catapult, where he stayed on as Chief Creative Officer. 14:58 A variety of different projects provide Mauro with an outlet to express his creativity. 18:09 Though it will always be remembered for the dancing elves, JibJab tries to offer consumers a way to connect and share happiness with loved ones. 19:02 JibJab believes that there is nothing better than making someone you love happy. 21:20 Today, JibJab tries to create content that provides laughter in a year that has seemingly halted life for many people. 22:17 Happiness is very subjective, differing in how it shows itself or how it is defined from person to person. 26:01 Mauro sees happiness in his work and how it allows him to use his creativity to bring happiness to others. 26:55 Every company around the world has had its culture tested this year, with most not working in the office. 29:24 Mauro does not believe in motivation, but rather he believes in sharing a vision with his team. 30:18 At JibJab, creators have the freedom to do whatever they want within the rules they work under. 32:00 A couple of years ago, Mauro decided to start The Happy Broadcast project because of the anxiety that he was getting from the news. 34:13 Digging deep to find the good news in the world, Mauro creates basic illustrations to go with them and then posts. 36:40 The Happy Broadcast doesn't just help other people; it helps Mauro stay positive in his world. 39:47 Mauro has experienced self-doubts and challenges related to learning about the market when creating children's books. 41:08 Finding a way to continue after his many failures have shaped Mauro into the person that he is today. 45:48 Looking back, Mauro wishes he would have cared more about the journey than the result. 48:17 Mauro suggests that everyone follows the Human Society because of his love of animals. 55:18 After decades of working with marketers, Mauro believes that honesty is the best way to promote a product. 57:29   Resources Mentioned: JibJab Mauro Gatti - https://maurogatti.com/ Northern Italy Vegan Ask the Story Bots on Netflix | Emmy Award Catapult buys JibJab Dancing Elves Year in Review Video Go Vote Video Quarantine Birthday Song The Happy Broadcast - https://maurogatti.com/thb | Instagram Books Mauro has published Italian Flour No One Likes a Fart (book) How the Other Half Lives (book) Humane Society (cause) Beauty 2 the Streetz (cause)   Subscribe to the podcast: Listen in iTunes (link: http://apple.co/2dbdAhV) Listen in Google Podcasts (link: http://bit.ly/2Rc2kVa) Listen in Spotify (Link: http://spoti.fi/2mCUGnC ) Connect with the Guest: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gattimauro https://twitter.com/maurogatti https://twitter.com/JibJab Connect with Marketing Today and Alan Hart: http://twitter.com/abhart https://www.linkedin.com/in/alanhart http://twitter.com/themktgtoday https://www.facebook.com/themktgtoday/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/marketing-today-with-alan-hart/   Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/marketingtoday See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In one of the more creative prospecting moves I've seen in a while, Carolyn Dorricott decided to create an infomercial for her prospects. It's absolute gold. JibJab’s CEO on Strong Brands and Floppy Jaws

For Episode 21 I spoke with someone who's been an animated head more times than he can probably count: Paul Hanges is CEO of JibJab, which is famous for its personalized e-cards and satire animations that lets your head be the star! If you haven’t heard of JibJab you may have had YOUR head in the sand; they’re the OG of digital branded content. It was born in 1999 to brothers Evan and Gregg Spiridellis, perhaps best recalled from their 2004 glory days of being featured on everything from The Tonight Show to ABC News for then viral political satire, “This Land.” Hanges, who was promoted from COO 18 months ago, says they’re proud of being dubbed the “original online cockroach” for their longevity and survival of dot-com and economy busts. In our conversation he explains why JibJab is still hot more than 20 years since its inception. They’re even having something of a renaissance with the resurrection of their trademark Year in Review video after a six-year pause. (But how could you NOT do a recap of a year like 2020? For Chief Creative Officer Mauro Gatti and lyricist Scott Emmons it probably almost wrote itself! And I’m proud to offer my big head/floppy jaw cut here for your amusement by way of example!) Hanges also explains the appeal of low-tech animation and their trademark “big heads and floppy jaws,” how they survive as a subscription model and why they walk away from brand dollars if not aligned with their mission – “to make billions of people happy by allowing them to be funny, wherever they're having that conversation.” Here are the highlights – but do hear all Hanges has to say in this very “animated” conversation: How it all started – yes in the proverbial garage Why, in a world of “deep fakes and augmentation” the appeal of JibJab is the personalization and NOT to replace reality. “We want to provide utility to help people say happy birthday or anniversary or other big moments.” How personal micro networks add up to eyeballs at scale – and 1.3 million paying subscribers; How they’ll leverage the rights to hits like “Old Town” or Mamma Mia the musical, but why they’ll walk away from 95% ofbranded opportunities; Why politics and JibJab do not always make good bedfellows, but why they participated in the Facebook ad boycott in July to stand up to divisiveness; How (self-plug here) they balance “brand+demand,” -- as we promote in The Continuum; The big data opportunity they’re sitting on to be a personalized service for people and how they’ve had to be nimble and “pivot” in their production and platform access. And of course, for the last episode of 2020 we have to offer Hanges’ words of wisdom from the past full year as CEO to other new CEOs...and how to embrace your strengths and those of others as well. “I take a step back and look and say, ‘we have a very strong operating team that's working towards a goal of making billions of people happy.’ ...And I've been really proud to say I can lead this company with that mission.” Personally, I could not have wrapped up my first year of Insider Interviews podcasts (AND my “It’s Quite a Living” personal podcast) with a better message than to “head” into 2021 with the inspiration of a JibJab to find the humor and spread the joy throughout this holiday season and into 2021.  Thank you all for listening and hopefully sharing this podcast. I value your feedback and support. And if I can help you create content that spreads joy or opens revenue doors please visit Moss Appeal or write to me at podcasts@mossappeal.com. Happy New Year!

As you'd expect of assets of the Russian state, the verdict is disdainful. The boys also look at the viral satire of the 2000s that provided a precedent for this contemporaneous work - Chris Morris' Bushwhacked, JibJab.com's 'Good To Be In DC' and 'Bomb Saddam' videos, Jolyon Rubenstein's more recent 'The Real Housewives of ISIS' sketch, and the "rathergood.com" website set up by 'Tonight...' co-creator Joel Veitch. JibJab CEO Gregg Spiridellis talks with Recode’s Kara Swisher and Chorus CEO Dick Costolo about how the company has adapted to the ever-changing internet over the past two decades. JibJab was on the verge of shutting down when it released “This Land,” an animated viral video sensation that parodied the 2004 U.S. Presidential race between George W. Bush and John Kerry. JibJab later moved into personalized greeting cards and apps for messaging platforms, which Spiridellis says is a low-risk way to make comedy scale. He says it’s harder than ever to justify the production costs of “mass funny” digital videos, because creators are now competing against the entire history of comedy, available for free on YouTube. They are both writer/actor/comedians with many amazing credits to each of their names ("Jimmy Kimmel Live," "The Sarah Silverman Program," "Tom Goes To The Mayor," "Two Broke Girls," to name a few). Steve and Scott are old friends who first met taking classes at the legendary improv company, Groundlings. They talk about what it was like to be in Groundlings, and what it was like to get "kicked out" of Groundlings and how that ultimately led them to their careers. We also talk about other topics from Steve Martin to "Three's Company" to getting paid to watch TV. STEVE AGEE'S BIO STEVE AGEE is an actor, writer and comedian whose comedy career began with stand-up and taking classes at The Groundlings. A Way with Words — language, linguistics, and callers from all over

[This episode first aired May 10, 2008.]We all misspeak from time to time, but how about when we mangle words on purpose? Do you ever say 'fambly' instead of family, 'perazackly' for exactly, or 'coinkydink' for coincidence? When Grant recently wrote a newspaper column about saying things wrong on purpose, the response was enormous. Why is it that many people find such wordplay hard to resist? We consider this question and share their own favorite examples.A Pennsylvania minister is curious about a phrase her family uses: 'by way of Robin Hood's barn' or 'around Robin Hood's barn,' meaning a long, circuitous route. How do you pronounce the architectural term 'beaux arts'? (Yep, Grant accidentally left of the final S when he spelled the term on the air.) Is it pronounced 'boh-ZART,' 'boh-ART,' 'boh-ZAR,' or 'boh-ZARTS'? We settle a dispute between a New Jersey woman and her nephew. Martha shares the winners of a contest for Best Book Titles of the Year. Or would that be Oddest Book Titles of the Year?Quiz Guy John Chaneski presents a puzzle in which we remove the first letter of a phrase to yield another with a different meaning. Try one: originally it was a boxing film starring Robert De Niro. Now it describes a head of cattle that's perhaps getting on in years.A Wisconsin woman is trying to remember 'a term for paths in the grass created by pedestrians taking shortcuts.' Grant has an answer for her, straight from the jargon of urban planning professionals. The caller also wants 'recommendations for a good thesaurus.' The hosts' response may surprise you.A caller is curious about a slang term she hears from her friends in the military. The word is 'Jody,' and it means someone who steals a soldier's girlfriend. Grant tells the colorful story behind this bit of military slang, as well as the songs it inspired. Here's a sample of Jody calls from the Vietnam war and from the Korean War.Grant and Martha share more intentional mispronunciations, including 'tar-ZHAY' instead of Target. This week's Slang This! contestant is not just any word nerd. She's Dorothea Gillim, creator of the animated PBS series WordGirl. Dorothea tries to guess the meaning of the odd terms 'pelican crossing' and 'zanjero.' The new season of WordGirl starts Monday, May 26th, and airs Mondays through Fridays. What is 'janky'? A Chattanooga caller uses it describe something inferior or bad. A Wisconsin man wonders about the use of the term 'big box store' to denote the stores of big retail chains like Wal-Mart. Is 'big box' a reference to the size and shape of the stores, or the fact that they sell huge appliances that come in, well, big boxes? Here's a silly song from JibJab about bix box stores.A Pittsburgh man is bothered by people who would say someone wrote an 'outraged letter.' Can a letter really be angry and indignant or is it really the writer who's upset? Martha answers his question and seizes the opportunity to talk about the four-syllable word, 'hypallage.'--Get your language question answered on the air! A talking chimp arriving in e-mail inboxes speaks in its sender's voice through a telephone connection or recites a pre-recorded joke for the boss. Burger King's ad campaign offers a ”subservient chicken” site where viewers can type in commands to a person in a chicken suit with red garters. JibJab is developing a new site called JokeBox where consumers and corporations can post and share funny videos or jokes online. These are among the latest viral marketing campaigns that blend advertisement and interactive entertainment across informal consumer networks. The convergence may be inevitable say Wharton faculty and others but it remains unclear whether such an approach is sustainable and measurable and whether it will actually generate new business.
