Free Roaming Predator /// Part 1 /// 939 Part 1 of 2    www.TrueCrimeGarage.com In 2006, the Greenville, South Carolina Police Department announced that they had connected one of their unsolved homicides from 1990 to two unsolved homicides that had occurred hundreds of miles away in Missouri. This meant that investigators were not dealing with isolated, unrelated crimes. They were dealing with a linked series. Events connected by a single source, a single method, a single offender who traveled. Yet, the announcement came with a crucial limitation: they did not know the identity of the killer. But they knew the nature of the threat.   Beer of the Week - Way Bird Hazy IPA from Half Acre Beer Company Garage Grade - 4 and a half bottle caps out of 5    More True Crime Garage can be found on Patreon and Apple subscriptions with our show - Off The Record.  Catch dozens of episodes of Off The Record plus a couple of Bonus episodes and our first 50 when you sign up today.    True Crime Garage merchandise is available on our website's store page.     Follow the show on X and Insta @TrueCrimeGarage / Follow Nic on X @TCGNIC / Follow The Captain on X @TCGCaptain    Thanks for listening and thanks for telling a friend.  Be good, be kind, and don't litter!  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Liquid Assets: A Beverage Industry Podcast
Beer boys solve a big mystery: Why is the on-premise so resilient?

Liquid Assets: A Beverage Industry Podcast

For more than a year, alcohol sales in the on-premise (restaurants, bars, stadiums, and hotels) have outperformed sales in the off-premise (grocery, convenience, and liquor stores). On the surface, this trend contradicts many of our explanations for the industry's struggles. If people are broke, why are they spending money in the channel where alcohol costs the most? If people are spending more time alone, why are they drinking in venues driven by socialization? A mystery this big requires more intellectual firepower than RaboResearch alone can provide. So we invited two PhDs and an economist on the show to help us figure it out. Our guests: Bart Watson, President & CEO, Brewers Association Andrew Heritage, Chief Economist, Beer Institute Lester Jones, Chief Economist, National Beer Wholesalers Association Relevant time stamps:  Why are on-premise sales outperforming off-premise sales? Round 1: 7:42 – The K-shaped economy is widening the gap between on-premise and off-premise sales: Middle/lower-income consumers feel squeezed and cut back more during at-home (off-premise) occasions, while protecting meaningful social occasions (on-premise). Higher-income consumers continue spending, widening the gap. 16:04 – Rising wealth is leading to an overall increase in on-premise spending: The US is getting richer over time; historically that drives more spending "away from home." As incomes rise, consumers shift toward experiences like bars/restaurants. 24:01 – Post-Covid socialization is normalizing: People want to reconnect after Covid. Younger consumers especially over-index in out-of-home alcohol spend, supporting on-premise demand through social experiences. 32:54 – Health and wellness trends are driving people to cut back on banal, at-home occasions: Consumers drink less overall, especially at home, but keep social drinking occasions. Alcohol becomes more "occasion-based," benefiting on-premise while hurting off-premise volumes. 42:02 – Inflation in the on-premise is massively outpacing off-premise: On-premise prices are rising faster than off-premise. Even if behavior doesn't change much, higher pricing inflates on-premise performance in dollar terms. Round 2:  45:18 – Travel and experiences are rebounding: Increased travel drives on-premise consumption (restaurants, bars, concessions). Social and vacation contexts strengthen on-premise relative to at-home drinking. 47:24 – The on-premise has more innovation, driving increases in productivity: Restaurants and bars have innovated (tech, formats, efficiency) post-Covid, improving service and experience. Better venues lead to stronger performance versus relatively static off-premise retail. 52:10 – There are more women in the workforce: More women in the workforce = more income + stronger social consumption patterns. Women may drink less, but have more money to spend per serving, suggesting they may be a driver of on-premise strength. 57:48 – Staying at home is more stimulating than it used to be: Consumers don't have to drink because they're bored. Competing activities (cannabis, online gaming, etc.) replace at-home drinking occasions – especially for younger males – more than on-premise drinking occasions. 1:03:02 – Several final factors may also be contributing to the on-premise performance gap: With the last pick of the draft, Bourcard mops up some of the final potential factors behind the on-premise performance gap, including young adults living with their parents, the decline of underage drinking, and GLP-1 drugs reducing the desire for casual drinking while leaving social occasions intact. Mark and Mat record live during the Rays vs. Royals Wednesday night game, the fourth and final game of a tough homestand series that Tampa Bay lost three games to one. The score at wrap-up is 5-3 in favor of the Rays heading into the final out of the ninth.Topics CoveredRays June Struggles The guys break down a rough June for Tampa Bay, noting the team has been burning through its early-season buffer. Mat walks through the slugging numbers for the month, where league average sits at .400. Only four Rays batters are above that mark in June: Ryan Vilade (.581), Junior Caminero (.461), Yandy Diaz (.453), and Cedric Mullins (.407). Jonathan Aranda and several others are well below .300, pointing to a lineup in a collective funk.Player HighlightsChandler Simpson makes a strong catch after an earlier error and bounces back with a single at the plateJohnny DeLuca returns and brings energy back to the outfieldJunior Caminero continues to lead All-Star voting at third base and is discussed as a possible Home Run Derby participantRoster Moves The Rays DFA Dom Keegan to acquire right-handed pitcher Chris Roycroft from the Cardinals. Mat profiles Roycroft as a Kyle Snyder-type project at 6'8", comparing his pitch mix to Manuel Rodriguez and his build and arm angle to former Ray Aaron Slegers. Mat notes the Rays may look to add a changeup to Roycroft's repertoire and suggests Keegan could be traded to a team needing first base depth, with the Mets mentioned as a possible destination.Trade Deadline Talk: Byron Buxton Mat makes the case for the Rays pursuing Twins outfielder Byron Buxton. Key points:Buxton is signed at $15 million per year through 2028He has stayed healthy the last two seasonsA package of Cedric Mullins and Jacob Melton could be the framework of a dealAdding Buxton alongside Caminero, Diaz, and Aranda would give Tampa a genuinely fearsome lineupJacob Melton is currently excelling in AAA and is expected to be called up or used as trade bait in early July.Pitching Depth Discussion of starter innings limits and how the Rays are managing their rotation. The Giants are dangling arms including Robbie Ray, though Mat suspects the Rays will prioritize lineup help over adding a starter. Brian Baker is discussed as a more confident and committed closer Minor League Notes The Bowling Green Hot Rods are 51 and 19.  The Rays have 15 hitters with an OPS above .800 and more than 100 at bats across their minor league system this season, with only six of those above Double-A.FIFA World Cup Mark and Mat take a detour to discuss the World Cup taking place across the US. Mat talks about attending games in Vancouver with Canadian military personnel, eating barbecue around the clock. They note that the lower alcohol content in American beer has European and Canadian fans drinking more than usual and draining Boston breweries. All three host nations (US, Mexico, Canada) advance out of the group stage. Mat reflects on never seeing Canadian men's soccer at this level in his lifetime, with the team ranked in the top 30 globally.Women's Baseball Mark reminds listeners that the Women's Pro Baseball League launches in August in Springfield, Illinois - https://www.womensprobaseballleague.com/ Women's Baseball Classic group stage takes place in Rockford, Illinois in approximately one month. - https://www.iwbc.org/worldcup/ Local Recognition The Rays recognize the University of Tampa Spartans for their NCAA Division II baseball three-peat and St. Leo's women's softball team for their Division II championship. Mark also mentions a recent conversation with Genelle Helen Garverick about the history of women's softball in the area dating back to the 1940s & 1950's.Remember to like and subscribe to BaseballBiz On Deck. The enzyme converts the precursors in barley to free thiols that smell and taste like passionfruit and grapefruit. It's super clean. No off-flavors like burnt rubber or other sulfurous notes. I am so excited to welcome back to the B.rad Podcast, Cynthia Monteleone, my good friend and sprinting mentor coach to numerous Olympic and world champion masters track and field athletes, and a former world champion herself in the 400 meters for women aged 45 and over! Our last show was dedicated to discussing the dangers of chronic endurance training and the wide-ranging physiological benefits of sprinting. This conversation is focused on another hugely important topic: recovery. The workout is the signal. The recovery is where the adaptation occurs. You’re going to learn how Cynthia became a world champion in sprinting while taking four days off per week to recover, why cortisol is not the enemy, and the difference between the productive stress of training and the chronic stress that can interfere with health, hormones, and performance. We also get into sprinting for longevity, chasing youth versus chasing longevity, and the simple recovery habits that matter most: sleep, walking, sunlight, spending time with family, and creating space where your body and nervous system can rebuild. TIMESTAMPS: The body doesn't know whether the stress comes from sprinting, scrolling, financial pressure, or a difficult conversation. It simply responds to stress. [03:37] Cynthia publishes a free newsletter with educational information on various topics such as the importance of recovery. [05:51] There is a difference between chasing youth and chasing longevity. [08:44] The problem of taking outside hormone replacements is common. [12:23] There are natural ways to get around some symptoms like those that hit women in midlife. Men often aromatize testosterone into estrogen, thus the spare tire. [18:10] Cynthia uses a metabolic pinch to analyze what is going on in a client's body. This is based in Chinese medicine. [21:04] The workout is the signal and the recovery is where the adaptation occurs. [22:03] There's a lot of misunderstanding and misinterpretation about what cortisol does in the body. Learn to use Eustress in a positive way. [24:07] Beer creates this enzyme aromatase that changes the testosterone to estrogen. [33:27] If anyone wants to track their longevity potential and their overall wellness and vitality, test your sex hormones frequently. The more calories burned, more classes attended, more miles run, still creates worse results, especially for the menopausal female [34:80] Aging with a broken body is not the best quality of life. [39:04] How can someone become a champion and win the medal but take tremendous amount of recovery time? Don't you have to train every day? [43:18] Walking after meals is such a great habit to adopt. [47:27] Walking in those barefoot shoes basically strengthens your foot. [50:17] Getting the right amount of sleep is essential for all your endeavors. [56:86] Find joy in what you are doing. Decompress, let go of stress. These are very important for recovery and longevity. [01:03:11] Some people think if you have a good diet, you don't need supplements. Some are based in ancestral medicine. [01:03:47] LINKS: Brad Kearns.com BradNutrition.com - 20% OFF Your First Order! Meanwhile, in Wisconsin, Minocqua Brewing Co. just had $25,000 worth of beer seized by state officials in a tax dispute the brewery's outspoken owner claims is political payback from the governor, and now there's a lawsuit to match. On the science side, a new study throws a wrench into "gluten-free" beer claims, revealing some labeled options in Germany still carry detectable gluten residue that standard tests miss entirely. That's bad news if you're brewing or buying gluten-free and assuming zero risk. Then we head to Boston, where Scottish World Cup fans have reportedly drained planes, bars, and entire beer store fridges dry ahead of their opener against Haiti. Sam Adams needed an emergency resupply to keep up.Plus: Tilray's plans to pour SweetWater, 10 Barrel, Terrapin, and other craft brands through BrewDog's UK taps, and the most baffling beer collab of the year: Heinz and Heineken's official six pack featuring five beers and one bottle of ketchup.
