Carnival of Lies ////// Part 4 Part 4 of 4    www.TrueCrimeGarage.com May 25th is National Missing Children's Day. President Ronald Reagan proclaimed May 25, 1983 as the first National Missing Children's Day. He established the annual observance to bring national awareness to child safety and encourage communities to prioritize protection efforts. The date was chosen to mark the sad anniversary of the disappearance of Etan Patz, a six-year-old who vanished from a New York City street corner on May 25, 1979. Twelve years after Etan Patz disappeared and on National Missing Children's Day 1991, a five-year-old boy named Timothy Wiltsey vanished from a Carnival in Sayreville, New Jersey. This week in observance of National Missing Children's Day, we take a look at a case that will never leave the hearts and minds of many. Welcome to episode 249 of Grasp the Bible. In this episode, we will examine the topic of the God who sees the overlooked.  Key takeaways:   God does not wait for the worthy to come to Him. He pursues the fleeing. Hagar was running from something with no plan for where to go, and God ran toward her. Divine questions are rarely for God's information. “Where have you come from and where are you going?” was an invitation for Hagar to face her situation honestly and receive a way forward. God names the suffering before He names the promise. He acknowledged Hagar's affliction before He spoke of her future. He does not skip over pain to get to blessing. The name Ishmael means “God hears.” Every time Hagar spoke her son's name she rehearsed the testimony that her cry had been heard. God builds memorials of grace into ordinary life. The invisible suffering of the powerless is fully visible to God. What happens behind closed doors with no witnesses is not hidden from El Roi. He is keeping account. Hagar is the only person in all of Scripture to give God a name. This honor was not given to Abraham, Moses, or David — it was given to a foreign slave woman. God's deepest revelations often come to the least expected people. God's pattern throughout Scripture is consistent: He reveals Himself to shepherds, fishermen, a murderer, an adulteress, a teenager. In His kingdom, the last are precisely the ones He seeks first.  Quotable:   You're not too marginalized, too broken, or too insignificant for His attention. The same God who left heaven to find a runaway slave in the wilderness is the God who sees you completely — right now, exactly where you are.  Application:   If you are running from pain without a destination — recognize that God is not trying to drag you back to what hurt you. He pursues the fleeing not to condemn their escape but to redirect their steps. Bring Him your honest answer to the question He asked Hagar: Where are you going?  If you are suffering in silence — your unseen struggles are fully visible to God. Chronic pain no one asks about. Financial stress you hide. Grief you carry alone. Caregiving exhaustion you never talk about. El Roi is not indifferent to what no one else can see. He is witnessing every moment and keeping account.  If you feel marginalized — by age, economics, health, race, or social standing — you are precisely the kind of person God loves to encounter. Do not let your circumstances make you doubt your worth to Him. He does not reserve His presence for the powerful and prominent.  Build your own memorial — Hagar named the well Beer-lahai-roi so the encounter would not be forgotten. When God meets you in a wilderness moment, write it down. Name it. Return to it. Let it become the evidence you rehearse when the next hard season comes.  Connect with us:   Website:  https://springbaptist.org  Facebook:   https://www.facebook.com/SBCKleinCampus (Klein Campus) https://www.facebook.com/SpringBaptist (Spring Campus)  Need us to pray for you? Egyptian print media has historically functioned as a cultural barometer, shifting from the early official bulletins of the 20th century into a relentless and aggressive form of capitalism on steroids. Professor Bahia Shehab discusses her book, "A Trade in Dreams: A Century of Egyptian Print Advertising", unpacking how visual culture has been both a witness to and a victim of political upheaval. Her research illuminates a century where advertising functioned as legalized psychological operations, deeply embedded in the daily life of Cairo. By dissecting the visual language of the past, she provides a necessary framework for understanding the mono-culture and flattening of aesthetic diversity in the modern era.   00:00 Introduction 01:32 Invention of the Egyptian Press 04:00 The Business Model of Early Advertising 05:50 Motivations for Researching Advertising History 08:20 Discoveries in Beauty Standards and Race 09:55 Sequential Chronology and Political Tectonic Shifts 12:13 Napoleon, Egyptomania, and Early Visual Communication 17:14 1920s–1940s: Agriculture and the Tobacco Export Industry 20:00 Professionalization and Multinational Ad Agencies 22:31 Hybrid Aesthetics: International vs. Local Design 27:21 The Nasser Era: Socialism and Nationalized Media 30:57 The Sadat Era: Peace Treaties and the Open Door Policy 32:33 Influential Figures and the Silencing of Female Voices 37:01 Domination of the Soap Industry 48:58 The 1940s: The Golden Age of Egyptian Advertising 57:04 Egypt's Leading Role in Regional Advertising 59:08 Book Tour and Future Perspectives   Bahia Shehab is a multidisciplinary artist, designer, political activist and historian whose work focuses on the interaction and intersection of modern identity and ancient cultural heritage. Her imaginative combination of calligraphy and Islamic art history produced cutting edge, beautiful, impactful street art during the Arab Spring and continues to inform her work as an educator and designer. Having always been concerned with identity and preserving cultural heritage, she investigates art history to reinterpret contemporary Arab politics, feminist discourse and social issues. Her culturally oriented work enables her to use history as a means to better understand the present and find solutions for the future. She believes that art may be employed for the purposes of social change and has explored this phenomenon through her artwork, which focuses on socially charged themes such as the Arab identity and women's rights. Her research is largely concerned with understanding the Arabic letters and has been preoccupied with Arabic calligraphy in much of her work. Her work has been displayed in exhibitions around the world and she has received several awards and recognition for her achievements.   Connect with Bahia Shehab

On this day, 1 June 1981, just over 700 production workers at the Schlitz Brewing Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, walked out on strike after contract negotiations broke down, when workers were offered far inferior settlements to Miller workers in the same town. Schlitz had been struggling financially since the late 1970s, partly due to a change to the recipe which was made to save money but was deeply unpopular. The workers kept up their walkout until the end of September until bosses retaliated by closing the plant, sacking all employees. The company was then sold.More information, sources and map: https://stories.workingclasshistory.com/article/8098/schlitz-workers-strikeOur work is only possible because of support from you, our listeners on patreon. We saved the best (or worst) for last. Battlefield Earth has a reputation for being one of the most god-awful movies ever made, and we have to admit, it's definitely a possibility. We talk about the things that others have probably talked about before, including the ridiculous Psychlo designs, the terrible plot, multitude of Dutch angles, and we also dive into Scientology a little bit (and how stupid it is, yes we mean that as an insult). We're also drinking Other Half Brewing x Junior's collaboration, the Strawberry Dream double dry-hopped IPA with oat cream and strawberries.Approximate timeline0:00-11:00 Intro11:00-18:00 Beer talk18:00-end Battlefield EarthThat does it for this year's Difficult Films, but we'll be back in a couple weeks with more standard coverage!

Crowhill and Pigweed drink and review a Sweet Baby Jesus chocolate peanut butter porter and discuss a question that's challenged churches and society for centuries. Should religion and politics mix?Using a collection of social issue position papers published by the United Methodist Church as a starting point, the conversation explores the history of Methodism, from John Wesley's "heart strangely warmed" experience and the Holy Club at Oxford to the circuit riders who helped spread the movement across the American frontier. Along the way, they examine how Methodism became deeply associated with social reform, including efforts against slavery, drunkenness, and other social ills. The discussion then turns to modern political issues, including immigration, worker justice, climate change, the death penalty, abortion, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Crowhill and Pigweed consider how churches apply biblical principles to contemporary policy debates, where the line between moral teaching and political advocacy should be drawn, and whether clergy are always equipped to speak authoritatively on complex public issues.A recurring theme is the idea that movements formed in crisis often institutionalize a crisis mentality. If a religious movement was born by confronting genuine social problems, does it eventually develop a habit of searching for the next great cause? And does that tendency sometimes lead churches to exaggerate modern problems by comparing them to historic struggles such as slavery, Jim Crow, or the civil rights movement? It's a wide-ranging conversation about faith, public life, church authority, social reform, and the challenges of living out religious convictions in a deeply political age. Plus, as always, there's a beer review to get things started.

Carnival of Lies ////// Part 2 Part 2 of 4    www.TrueCrimeGarage.com May 25th is National Missing Children's Day. This is the unsolved case of Timothy “Timmy” Wiltsey.  To learn more about National Missing Children's Day and/or the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children go to MissingKids.org   Beer of the Week - Jet Boat Citra Hazy IPA by Harbor Brewing Company Garage Grade - 4 and a quarter bottle caps out of 5    More True Crime Garage can be found on Patreon and Apple subscriptions with our show - Off The Record.  Catch dozens of episodes of Off The Record plus a couple of Bonus episodes and our first 50 when you sign up today.    True Crime Garage merchandise is available on our website's store page.     Follow the show on X and Insta @TrueCrimeGarage / Follow Nic on X @TCGNIC / Follow The Captain on X @TCGCaptain    Thanks for listening and thanks for telling a friend.  Be good, be kind, and don't litter!  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. What starts as a review of Hathaway's Heroes IPA from Dogfish Head Craft Brewery quickly turns into a time capsule of hockey playoff anxiety, craft beer nostalgia, cigar festivals, brewing science, and one surreal story about unknowingly hanging out with Sam Calagione years before realizing who he was. Recorded during intermission of a Flyers vs. Penguins playoff game — immediately after Garnet Hathaway scores — this may be the most emotionally compromised beer review I've ever done. Inside the episode: A full BJCP-style breakdown of Hathaway's Heroes IPA Live playoff energy and Flyers fandom chaos Stories from early-2000s cigar festivals and discovering Dogfish Head A nostalgic dive into the lost brewing TV series Brew Masters Brewing talk about stalled fermentations, oxygenation, specialty malts, and resin-heavy IPAs A review that openly admits the score may have been influenced by hockey emotions This episode is part beer review, part brewing rabbit hole, part sports panic attack — and somehow it all works. If you love Dogfish Head, craft beer history, brewing process talk, or hearing someone try to professionally judge a beer while distracted by playoff hockey, this one's for you.
