Exit on your terms. In this episode of the She Leads Podcast, Kelly Parker shares how she built Send Ribbon, a bootstrapped corporate gifting company acquired by UrbanStems, by focusing on one overlooked opportunity: solving real pain points for real buyers. With just $5,000 and no outside funding, Kelly launched her business at 27 after years inside high growth companies like Indeed, WeWork, and DoorDash. From healthcare realities to diversified income strategies, Kelly shares practical advice for building sustainable companies that align with your life, not just your ambition.Today, through her advisory platform launchgrowexit, Kelly supports female founders who want to launch, grow, and eventually exit their companies with clarity and confidence. If you are building a business, thinking about long term value, or questioning the hustle culture narrative, this episode offers a grounded roadmap for turning customer insight into a high value company.Chapters: 00:56
This one's gonna hurt. And that's okay, pain is part of life. We all feel it, so let's give it the grace of our attention. You may have heard the phrase, “sore spot” or “trigger point” in reference to both metaphorical pain, and physical pain. Does your pain belong to a spot? Is that spot a circle, or more angular, or square? Does it have a third dimension? Is one sore spot connected to another?Pain is the impossible, words never touch what we feel, not really. By approaching pain in a new language of shape, colour, texture, dimensions, there is room for something new: curiosity. Instead of fixating on solution to the pain, or avoiding it altogether, we make a third option by offering our attention without a goal.Just to notice it with our drawing eye.=Watch on YouTube: =If you want to practice in sync with others, join my live Drawing Health class every Saturday on Zoom. "Procurement is what you make of it. It can be a bargain basement function at some firms, but it's also becoming more strategic. We have to take a more holistic, integrated view of things and try to understand the big business problems we can help solve and then offer a business solution, not just a procurement solution." – Amit Saronwala, VP, Global Indirect Supply Management, Medtronic Procurement leaders in healthcare are feeling the heat: innovation cycles are tightening, supplier bases are vast, and new pressures on cost and cash flow are here to stay. So how do you build more agile, high-performing procurement teams without adding complexity or burning out your people? In this episode, Philip Ideson speaks with Amit Saronwala, VP of Global Indirect Supply Management at Medtronic, and Jeremy Lappin, CEO of Candex. Amit draws from his clinical experience and deep commercial expertise to share how Medtronic is recasting procurement's role by focusing on smarter supplier segmentation, business-centric metrics, and technology that makes friction disappear. Jeremy adds perspective from supporting global procurement teams at scale, revealing where automation and analytics can create breathing room for strategic work. This conversation takes a candid look at how one of healthcare's biggest names is making indirect procurement a critical lever for business value and what it takes to bring suppliers and stakeholders on the journey. In this episode, Amit and Jeremy discuss how procurement can: Set a clear line for strategic vs. transactional suppliers… and stick to it Speak "business" (not just "procurement") to increase influence with stakeholders Automate low-risk, high-volume purchases to free up valuable talent Choose tools that require little or no change management for smoother adoption Redefine procurement's core skillset for the next five years Links: Amit Saronwala on LinkedIn Jeremy Lappin on LinkedIn Subscribe to This Week in Procurement Subscribe to Art of Procurement on YouTube
In this episode of HAYVN Hubcast, host Nancy Sheed speaks with Christine Jurzenski and Erica Schultz, co-founders of Cranel, about their journey building a women-centered health company rooted in prevention, education, and product efficacy. Normalizing taboo conversations in women's healthChristine Jurzenski and Erica Schultz are on a mission to remove stigma around UTIs, gut health, and vaginal health—areas many women experience but rarely discuss openly. A company born from personal pain pointsCranel started as a solution to recurrent UTIs after the founders experienced the frustrating cycle of antibiotics, side effects, and limited preventative options. Non-traditional founders who learned fastWith backgrounds in finance and law, they built Cranel by taking “micro steps”—researching clinical evidence, cold-calling experts, and learning manufacturing and e-commerce from scratch. COVID pushed them into DTC—and it workedThe pandemic forced Cranel to launch as a direct-to-consumer brand, allowing them to maintain margins, educate customers, and build strong relationships with their community. Lean scaling with smart delegationCranel is still run by the two founders full-time with a network of contractors. They believe in mastering processes before outsourcing and leveraging modern tools and AI to scale efficiently. Expanding from a hero product to a platformThe brand has grown beyond cranberry juice with the launch of a probiotic/prebiotic product to support gut and vaginal microbiome health, signaling a broader women's health platform strategy. Navigating the supplement and regulatory gray zoneThey discussed the challenges of operating in the supplement space, balancing science-backed messaging with regulatory constraints, and advocating for better education around antibiotic overuse and resistance. The power of community and pitchingWinning the HAYVN Hatch pitch competition reinforced the value of female founder communities, mentorship, and the strength of a co-founder partnership. Christine and Erica's journey with Cranel illustrates how personal frustration can spark meaningful innovation. By combining evidence-based product development, direct-to-consumer education, and a mission to destigmatize women's health, they're building more than a brand—they're building a movement. Their story highlights the power of curiosity, persistence, and community in turning a side hustle into a growing health platform designed by women, for women.

Are you spending time chasing agencies that don't have money—or don't have a reason to buy from you? In this episode, Eric Coffie breaks down how federal spending actually works (appropriations + continuing resolutions) and why understanding where funding is flowing matters more than ever for small businesses. He explains the reality behind "fast" solicitations (2–3 week turnarounds), how Q1 spending pressure creates urgency, and why positioning before opportunities drop is the real advantage. Eric then walks through 8 agency pain points that create immediate opportunity—especially for businesses that can speak directly to mission needs instead of using generic "we do IT / we do construction" language. You'll hear how to use the NDAA and agency research to craft agency-specific capability statements, where to look beyond SAM.gov (IDIQs/task orders), and a practical 4-week action plan to build your target list, align your offerings to real problems, and start getting responses from the right buyers. Key Takeaways: No funding = no new contracts. Track appropriations/CR realities so you know where to focus your limited time and budget. Agencies are struggling to find qualified small businesses and match capabilities to needs—this is your opening to stand out fast. In this episode of The 20/20 Podcast, Dr. Harbir Sian sits down with MaryAnn Klassen, a long-time leader in the eye care industry whose career has closely mirrored — and influenced — some of optometry's most significant clinical shifts over the past four decades.MaryAnn takes listeners through her journey from the early days of contact lenses, when extended-wear lenses first disrupted traditional practice models, to the evolution of AMD management, and ultimately to today's rapidly expanding understanding of dry eye disease. Having worked with major industry players such as CIBA Vision, Novartis Ophthalmics, and Bausch + Lomb, she offers a rare, behind-the-scenes perspective on how optometrists adapt to change — and what it takes for new ideas to gain traction in a profession that values evidence and patient safety above all else. The conversation then turns to MaryAnn's entrepreneurial leap: the creation of the Meivertor, a patented medical device designed to make upper eyelid eversion easier, safer, and more efficient. Sparked by a real clinical frustration she experienced firsthand, MaryAnn shares how the idea moved from a simple observation to a globally patented product now used in practices around the world. She walks through the realities of device development, including prototyping, patenting, workflow challenges, and the often-overlooked importance of technician confidence and training.Beyond the device itself, this episode explores bigger themes — innovation in optometry, behavior change in clinics, empowerment of staff, and the mindset required to build something meaningful while still working full-time. It's a candid, insightful conversation that blends clinical relevance with business wisdom and personal reflection.Key TakeawaysOptometry evolves when evidence supports change — history proves it repeatedlyThe upper eyelid contains critical diagnostic information that is often overlookedSmall workflow improvements can create outsized clinical and efficiency gainsEmpowering technicians improves diagnostics, confidence, and job satisfactionSuccessful innovation requires persistence, clarity, and hard work — not luckMemorable Quotes“Optometry continually has to evolve — and it does when the evidence supports the shift.”“There has to be a single-handed solution to this problem.”“The upper lids matter.”“If you give optometrists a legitimate reason and support it clinically, they will adopt it.”“I don't believe in luck. • Interessen Targeting verliert an Bedeutung, Creative Signale gewinnen.
Today we have a special episode breaking down how investors are using AI. This is a question I get from many of you, and while there is no shortage of content on the implications of AI, I know there's an appetite to learn more about tangible use cases, how to make sure you're getting the most out of these tools, how to think about advancements in the technology, and ensuring that you're keeping pace with the innovation curve. So my guest today is David Plon, Founder of Portrait Analytics. Now, David and Portrait have been partners of Business Breakdowns since last year, but I specifically asked David to do this episode because, one, he is really front and center to how investors are using and applying AI. But two, and maybe more importantly, he and his team come with a background in investing. So while the conversation doesn't really focus on Portrait, you'll hear references to what he and his team are building and how they've shaped it for investors, you'll very much understand when you hear David talk that he is someone who understands the pain points of an investor. I think everyone will find something in this episode that will benefit them in their day to day, and I would love to hear the feedback. In this 200th episode, I focus on the real pain points retirees face and the importance of planning ahead. Drawing from years of conversations with clients and listeners, today's discussion highlights how assumptions about retirement often don't match reality, especially when it comes to taxes, lifestyle choices, and healthcare. Taxes remain one of the biggest surprises, as many retirees discover they're not in a lower bracket after all. Withdrawals from 401ks, IRAs, and pensions are taxed as ordinary income, and Social Security can also be partially taxable. At the same time, couples must navigate differing views on lifestyle and legacy, whether to enjoy their savings fully or prioritize leaving an inheritance, making estate planning documents and open conversations essential. Healthcare and cash management round out the episode's themes. Medicare rules change frequently, and waiting until the last minute can lead to costly mistakes, while keeping too much money in low‑interest accounts or idle cash can erode value against inflation. The takeaway is clear: thoughtful, proactive planning across taxes, legacy, healthcare, and investments is the key to building a secure and successful retirement. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... (00:00) Intro. (04:34) Cost of Relocating in Retirement. (12:57) Retirement Saving Loan Strategies. (16:16) Taxes in Retirement. (24:04) Market Expectations and Strategies. (24:04) Cash management. (29:35) Healthcare Planning After Retirement. Planning Ahead for Taxes in Retirement Retirement planning often surprises people when it comes to taxes. Many assume they'll be in a lower bracket once they stop working, but withdrawals from 401ks, IRAs, and pensions are taxed as ordinary income, and Social Security can also be partially taxable. That's why it's so important to build a tax‑efficient withdrawal strategy ahead of time, rather than relying on assumptions that may not hold true. Lifestyle and Legacy: Defining Your Retirement Goals Another key theme is lifestyle and legacy. When planning for your retirement it is important to recognize what your goals are. Your goals drive your decisions for how you want to set up your retirement. Will you be relocating? Will you be giving away your money? Some retirees want to enjoy their savings fully, while others prioritize leaving an inheritance, even if it means sacrificing their own comfort. Couples often have different views on this, which makes open conversations and proper estate planning documents essential. Without wills, trusts, or powers of attorney, families can face costly probate battles and emotional strain, so addressing legacy goals early helps prevent conflict later. From Cash Reserves to Medicare: Proactive Steps for Peace of Mind Emergencies and healthcare planning is another area where retirees need to be proactive. It may be unreasonable to have large amounts of money in cash or low interest yielding accounts. Having a liquid emergency fund is essential but you may benefit from having your money growing for you. Additionally, Medicare rules change frequently, and waiting until the last minute can lead to expensive mistakes. The podcast highlights how comparing options, even for something as simple as prescriptions, can save thousands of dollars. Preparing ahead for coverage, understanding what's included, and exploring alternatives ensure retirees aren't blindsided by unexpected expenses and can maintain peace of mind in this new stage of life. Banks today have a great number of customer experience pain points. There's the trust factor to consider, on whether customers feel their bank actually care about them and their financial struggles. But there's also the fact that customers expect a seamless experience across multiple channels, whether that's in the branch, mobile or at the branch. In today's episode of the Bank Customer Experience podcast, Brian McEvoy, chief retail banking officer at Webster Five, joined Bradley Cooper to discuss how banks can navigate these customer pain points. He said during the podcast that "people process technology in unison." In other words, the various platforms have to work together. It's not enough to have a fancy mobile app that doesn't integrate well with your other bank platforms or doesn't integrate with third party apps.McEvoy added that the hardest part for banks is: "How do you make a frictionless experience for the customer?" This is a particularly big problem as customers have far less patience for any frustration in the experience."If there's any pain point in the experience, our tolerance and patience is less than it used to be."So how do banks address this? McEvoy pointed to a few important elements:Refocus branches to have a custom experience for guests.Use AI to automate simpler tasks.Use a mobile-first strategy to ensure all your bank's features are accessible.During the discussion, McEvoy addressed several subtopics such as:Identifying pain points.Making a good branch experience.Keeping the personal touch while also using AI.Listen to the full discussion above.

How to Build Meaningful Customer Relationships by Investing in Employee and Customer Experience Shep interviews Lance Gruner, CX expert, keynote speaker, and author. He talks about the intersection of AI and customer experience, the importance of leadership accountability, and key insights from his new book, 10 Things They Hate About YOU: A CX Playbook for Leaders. This episode of Amazing Business Radio with Shep Hyken answers the following questions and more: How does artificial intelligence impact customer service interactions? Why is it important for business leaders to personally experience their own customer journey? Should companies be concerned about AI replacing human customer service agents? How can businesses leverage AI to make customer service agents more effective? Why do broken processes cause customers to leave, and how can businesses address them? Top Takeaways: One of the fastest ways to lose customers is to have processes that don't work as they should. Leaders need to understand what customers go through every day. The best way to do this is to "walk the property," which means experiencing the company's products or services just like a customer would. By seeing things from the customer's point of view, leaders can spot problems and understand where things fall short. Artificial intelligence is changing customer service. It can make agents smarter by helping them access relevant information faster and deliver more personalized responses. However, it is important to remember that AI is just a tool, not a cure-all. It is only as good as its programming and the system that it is added into. Make using self-service easy and inviting. When introducing new technology or self-service options, don't just point customers in the right direction. Lead them there and show them how it works. If a customer needs help, solve their problem first, then take a moment to teach them how they could do it themselves next time. Customer relationships are built on trust. When companies fail to deliver on promises, like missing deliveries or not solving problems, customers stop believing that the company will take care of them. Long-term loyalty is built on consistency, transparency, and trust. Investing in training for team members pays off because it leads to better service and happier customers. Make sure they are well-versed with your current processes before adding new steps and technology into their workflow. Small details send big messages about how much a company cares about its customers' experience. Companies that pay attention to every touchpoint, no matter how minor, such as a friendly gesture or easy-to-find information on a website, earn their customers' respect and trust. Plus, Lance shares a few of the 10 things they may hate about you and your brand. Tune in! Quote: "When done right, using AI can improve speed and accuracy, help with personalization, and give employees more time to focus on high-value work." Jay Goninan unpacks Wrenchway's annual Voice of Technician survey with 4,700+ responses, revealing a concerning drop in satisfaction, but also a roadmap for improvement. Key Insights: Technician Sentiment: 50% wouldn't recommend their shop, with negativity dominating social media. Career Development: Technicians want visible growth paths, certifications, and new specialized roles like ADAS or EV diagnostics. Compensation: Pay remains the top frustration. Shops need profitability strategies and flexible pay plans (61% prefer hourly/salary with bonus). Culture & Tools: Proper equipment, work-life balance, and intentional team-building are critical to retention. Professionalism: Shifting language from “mechanic” to “specialist/technologist” elevates the industry's perception. Leadership & Communication: Shop owners must ask “why,” listen to technicians, and implement meaningful change.
