Advice columnist extraordinaire and author of the new book Not My Type: One Woman vs a President, E. Jean Carroll joins Sam to talk about why she decided to write her book in secret even going to the length to edit it over Signal. Because Sam grew up reading E. Jean’s column, E. Jean also pauses to take credit for all of Sam’s success. They talk about the unwritten rules of jury trials like why you’re not allowed to entertain the jury with interesting stories and why E. Jean says it almost killed her. E. Jean regales Sam with the details of recreating her signature 1996 bobbed hair so the jury would believe she was fuckable (her words!), and the evidence she wasn’t encouraged to submit. Then she tells Sam about the Hideous Men Tour she used to run, and the year she spent as a writer at SNL. They had a gas! Keep up with Samantha Bee @realsambee on Instagram and X. By 1985, The Replacements had seen and done a few things. They'd recorded a couple of records (see our review of Let It Be at 40) and been out on some tours. They'd made enough noise that they were signed to major label Sire and were ready to take on the world with bigger shows, music videos and tv appearances. But wait, were they? The boys were still drinking heavily thanks to Bob Stinson and Paul Westerberg's crippling stagefright. They still hated doing any kind of promotion, which they saw as selling out and not punk. And when they finally made it on Saturday Night Live in early 1986 to promote their 1985 classic, Tim, they were banned for life for Westerberg's use of the f word on live tv. However, Westerberg's poignant songwriting and raspy vocals were at the top of their game and Tim is considered a true masterpiece of the 1980s. It may not have even gone gold, but songs like Hold My LIfe, Kiss Me On The Bus and Dose of Thunder not only showed that they could arrange a quality pop song but could address issues that may be in juxtaposition from their hard rockin punk riffs. Swingin Party talks about how hard it is to be an introvert in forced social situations, Little Mascara is the tale of a girl with bad taste in men who loses nothing when her loser guy finally leaves her and Left Of The Dial captures life on the road between college towns for a band trying to make it. Originally, the album had a bad mix. However, thanks to a 2023 remix as part of a box set from Ed Stasium, these songs can now be heard clearly and loud the way they were always supposed to be heard. As Tim turns 40, we celebrate what is likely The Replacements greatest achievement and go track by track to show why everyone should be familiar with this 1985 gem. Over the course of eight years in the cast of ‘Saturday Night Live,' Beck Bennett performed comedy with more than 150 celebrity hosts. But no one—not even Donald Trump himself—was as difficult to work with as Elon Musk. In the 300th episode of The Last Laugh, Bennett looks back on his SNL audition, discusses what it was like to join the show with one of his oldest friends Kyle Mooney (with whom he just launched his own new podcast), and reveals exactly what made Musk a more “offensive” collaborator than Trump. He explains how he knows Vladimir Putin liked his shirtless impression a lot more than Trump liked Alec Baldwin's portrayal, how he knew it was finally time to leave the show, and how Lorne Michaels nearly talked him into staying. Finally, Bennett talks about the two very different movies he appears in this summer: voicing a cartoon dog in the raunchy Netflix movie ‘Fixed' and joining the DC cinematic universe as The Daily Planet's Steve Lombard in ‘Superman.'Follow Beck Bennett on Instagram @beckbennettFollow Matt Wilstein on Bluesky @mattwilstein Follow The Last Laugh on Instagram @lastlaughpodHighlights from this episode and others at The Daily Beast Hosted on Acast. Longtime Seattle Mariners fan and entertainment writer Mario Lanza returns to the Jack Vita Show to talk baseball and Survivor. The Mariners were active at the trade deadline, acquiring corner infielders Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suarez from the Arizona Diamondbacks. The club reaped the benefits immediately, winning 10 of its next 11 games, before hitting a snag. The M's proceeded to lose seven of their ensuing eight games. It's been a summer of high highs and low lows for the Mariners, but with just over a month remaining in the regular season, Seattle finds itself just 1.5 games back of the Houston Astros for first place in the American League West. Mario and Jack put the Mariners' season under the microscope, and attempt to predict how they see the club finishing the year. Hear why Jack believes the M's have the highest ceiling of any team in the American League. Later, they debate the merits of Cal Raleigh's season and his AL MVP candidacy. Mario's thoughts on the topic may surprise you! Along the way, they also touch on an extremely close NL West race between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres, as well as various news from around Major League Baseball. Later, Mario and Jack chat about Survivor 50, the final season of Mario's Survivor Historians Podcast, The Funny 115, Saturday Night Live, and plenty more! It's an episode you will NOT want to miss!
That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits
Nick shines a spotlight on the rare group of underage performers who were tapped to host Saturday Night Live. Christina Ricci, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sara Gilbert, Claire Danes, Miley Cyrus, the Olsen Twins, Fred Savage, and Macaulay Culkin all stepped onto the stage between the ages of 11 and 19, and their youthful energy shaped the sketches in some surprising ways. With behind-the-scenes stories and context, Nick breaks down how each of them handled the pressure. Some rose to the occasion with strong monologues and memorable sketches, while others—yes, the Olsen Twins—struggled to make an impact. From a college dorm mix-up to a Memorial Day barbeque gone off the rails, the episode revisits some of the most unusual material these young hosts ever had to deliver. A fun trivia note caps things off: all but one of these underage hosts only took on the job once, making their appearances even more of a fascinating footnote in SNL history. [Ep 138]

No Film School delves into the high-pressure, fast-paced world of sketch comedy editing on Saturday Night Live's historic 50th Anniversary special. The episode features returning guest Ryan Spears—four-time Emmy nominee and Film Unit editor at SNL—joined by longtime collaborators Daniel Garcia and Paul Del Gesso. Together, they share insider stories on crafting memorable montages, rediscovering archival gems, navigating the evolution from analog to digital workflows, and ultimately earning their first-ever team nomination for the anniversary special. In this episode, No Film School's GG Hawkins, and guests discuss… How the SNL editorial team collaborated on the 50th Anniversary special, blending archival material and creative reels into a unified piece. The rediscovery of forgotten gems—like Tom Hanks's softball clip—and deciding what made the final cut. Technical and generational shifts in editing: from film and DIY workflows to 4K raw editing, searchable transcripts, advanced VFX, and speedy turnaround. Adapting to new creative tools, such as APM's sound‑alike search and 3D animation techniques like the Cheeto character. Balancing fast cuts with breathing room—tailoring pacing to fit the tone, whether it's surreal whimsy or a more paced parody like White Lotus. Managing chaos: keeping cool under pressure during live edits, system failures, and last-minute creative changes. Advice for aspiring SNL editors: start as assistant editors, build a strong reel (even outside comedy), check your ego at the door, and learn the collaborative workflow. Memorable Quotes “It really was just this kind of like hot, like this sort of like melting pot of ideas…” “Tom Hanks is playing softball with these kids… he's playing the real version of Tom Hanks… super competitive.” “We've jumped to 4K and we're editing raw… now you're transcribing your sequences too… What a game changer.” “Every joke to the frame pretty much.” “It's a learned craft… some people could do it and some people can.” Guests Ryan Spears is a Film Unit editor at SNL and four time Emmy nominee for work including “I'm Just Pete”, “Mario Kart”, and “Murder Show”. He's also cut for the shows “The Amber Ruffin Show”, “Teenage Euthanasia”, the film “Citizen Weiner” and the Hulu standup “Matteo Lane: The Al Dente Special”. He's currently a commercial editor based in New York at The Den Editorial. Daniel Garcia – Daniel Garcia has been a video editor at SNL for 10 years. His work on the show includes editing weekly promos, pretapes such as PDD's “Hard Seltzer”, and the Emmy winning digital series Creating SNL. "Our mother was so aware of how important it was for us to treat each other well and she just led with such a loving graceful presence. She was the quintessential mom. She was just warm and loving and forgiving and nurturing. She taught us to love and be loved," reflects Amy."To be loving and kind to one another" Amy explains, "mom gave me the gift of solice and comfort. She was happy being in the shadows. In big gatherings ...Amy says mom gave her the gifts of curiosity and independence. She considers herself a late bloomer. Betty was happy that Amy was able to move 3000 miles away on her own terms and create and live your own dreams.Nancy shares a wonderful story of a mother's love for her daughter. Nancy was a punk rocker and was heckled by some local teens, but Betty went full on riot act and defended her daughter and her orange hair. Betty stood up for her daughter. She taught Nancy how to stand up for herself and not let anyone take advantage of you.According to my guests, their mother had a very quiet and kind demeanor yet the Harrington kids had a phrase regarding their mother "don't mess with my chickens." "What you should do, is....," was one of their mom's familiar phrases for Nancy and her siblings . Their mother had studied to be an art teacher, had children and she was a substitute teacher at her daughter's Catholic school. She taught her children all kinds of things without the help of the internet. It didn't exist back then, but she was a wonderful natural teacher. When Nancy and Amy's parents met, Betty and her family represented everything their father did not have. Their dad, one of nine children lost his mom as a baby and his father, my guest's grandfather, couldn't keep a stable household. My guest's parents were able to pass on the significance of a safe and loving family environment. And their mother became the shield that protected her children from any issues that would arise. The Passionistas Equality Summit happens annually focusing on marginalized women from their community. These women wanted someone who had their b ack. Launched the Passionistas Project Sisterhood in March 2024. Women can come and be themselves and lift themselves up. It's not just business networking, it's personal growth and social impact. Women don't need to show up with a business card and be all buttoned up and pretend everything.Amy says this is a story of a woman who put family before everything including herself. Taught her children how to love one another other and be good stewards in the world. The Harrington house was a place where any and all kids who needed a place where they felt safe were welcome. From the time I was little, we had friends who were gay, different ethnic backgrounds, the kids who's parents worked all night and had no dinner. we learned that our lives were richer because we knew all these people and their lives were richer because they were accepted, explains Amy. Our mother was a loving and caring human being, possibly the most loving and caring being you could possibly imagine. Nancy adds "she was someone who loved unconditionally and she gone too soon."Amy and Nancy feel that the common bond that holds their family together, the driving force in all of their lives was based on creativity. Both mom and dad were very creative. Had she been born in a different era, she would have been Indiana Jones. She also love the simple things in life including ice cream and cooking. Both my guests agree that their mother encouraged all her children "to dream big and go for it." She wanted her children to be themselves. Betty loved her children for who they were.*Women's Equality Day is Monday, August 25th. “Can you name 100 pop culture icons worthy of hosting SNL? No? Then buckle up.”In this riotous episode of The Ben and Skin Show, the crew dives headfirst into the glorious chaos of KT's annual SNL Fantasy Draft—a pop culture showdown where strategy, sabotage, and sheer absurdity collide. With 10 players, 10 rounds, and 100 picks, the stakes are high and the egos even higher.Jeff “Skin” Wade entrusted his draft board to Cray Tray while vacationing in Austin, only to return and discover that his “GM” went rogue in the Super Pick Round, selecting David Corenswet—a name Skin didn't even recognize. Meanwhile, Krystina Ray flexed her girl-power lineup with Anne Hathaway, Scarlett Johansson, and Mila Kunis, while KT defended the draft's complexity like it was a sacred ritual.

Matt is joined by Bloomberg's Lucas Shaw to discuss Netflix's surprise hit ‘KPop Demon Hunters,' which has become their second-most popular English-language film. Matt and Lucas discuss why Netflix did this despite its very clear view on movie theaters, whether the movie could have been a massive hit had it gone straight to theaters, and why AMC refused to show this movie (02:49). Back in May, Kirk joined pianists Adam Maness and Peter Martin of the You'll Hear It podcast to talk about what makes Tower of Power great. It was a very fun conversation, so he asked if he could run their episode in the Strong Songs feed. And here we are!Listen to You'll Hear It anywhere you find podcasts, and find both Adam and Peter (and many others) teaching jazz lessons at OpenStudio.com.ORIGINAL SHOW NOTESMay 19, 2025We hand the mic to Kirk Hamilton from the Strong Songs podcast to help us break down the groovy 1973 self-titled release: Tower of Power. We unpack what makes this Oakland funk outfit a generational institution – from David Garibaldi's precision drum fills and Rocco Prestia's machine-gun bass lines to what may be the tightest horn section of all time. We dig into standout tracks like “What Is Hip?” and “Soul Vaccination,” spotlight Lenny Pickett's wild ascent from TOP to SNL, and detail some funny production quirks (like why the drums are panned hard left). It's a full-course tour through funk, soul, and brass brilliance – with a healthy side of stank face.----LINKS-----
In this week's episode, both of our storytellers transform into someone they admire—one quite literally, the other more figuratively.Part 1: While juggling climate science studies and a budding comedy career, Rollie Williams finds an unexpected niche impersonating his environmental hero, Al Gore.Part 2: Scott Acton longs to follow in Hemingway's footsteps, but when his English teacher squashes his writing dreams, he reluctantly accepts his role as “the computer guy.”Rollie Williams is a Brooklyn-based comedian, video editor, and guy with both student debt and a Climate Science & Policy degree from Columbia University. He is the creator and host of the digital comedy series Climate Town. In the past few years, the channel has amassed 600,000 subscribers, several millions views, and a handful of awards. Rollie is also the co-creator and co-host of podcast The Climate Denier's Playbook. Formerly, Rollie performed a monthly comedy show 'An Inconvenient Talk Show' doing sketches and comedic deep dives by pairing comedians (SNL, The Daily Show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, etc) together with climate scientists (NASA, MIT, Harvard). When he's not doing climate stuff, Rollie plays an unhealthy amount of billiards and recently achieved his dream of commentating for the World Cup of Pool in England. Scott Acton is Professor and Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Virginia. He did his undergraduate studies at Virginia Tech and graduate studies at the University of Texas at Austin. Scott's laboratory is called VIVA – Virginia Image and Video Analysis. They work on image analysis problems from imaging for Alzheimer's disease to analyzing classroom videos for improving elementary math education. Scott also recently worked for the National Science Foundation as a program director for programs in signal processing and artificial intelligence. When he's not doing research at UVA, you will find him in the mountains on his purple mountain bike.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
