Confession time. I was the kid with the "I am me, I'm ok" poster taped up in my room. I was desperate to feel confident and ok, and yeah, it's embarrassing, but it helped. My mom, who was a lot like Stuart Smalley (if you remember that SNL skit, the guy who looks in the mirror and reminds himself he's good enough, smart enough, and gosh darn it, worthy), encouraged me to hang it up after a devastating seventh grade experience. My own personal Mean Girls encounter. I had just started at a new junior high, and it felt like every rule of friendship and belonging got flipped upside down overnight. Everyone I was friends with landed on the red team. I got placed on purple. I was shocked by how brutal girls I once called my besties could be. And while I found new friends eventually, something else took root first. A belief that I needed to change. That I needed to fix myself. That belief followed me for years. It played out in my first marriage, until I had a shocking awareness and awakening. There was never anything wrong with me. There was only the belief that I wasn't cool enough, smart enough, pretty enough, whatever word fits for you. It began as the original Netflix streamer, but today its biggest advantages are interface preference, ecosystem familiarity, and broad app support.Fire TV sticks and boxes make the most sense for people already deep in Amazon's ecosystem, especially if they use Prime Video and add-on channels heavily. The Fire TV Cube also gets praise as an easy “hotel-like” setup for guests, with strong voice-control features.Apple TV is the easiest recommendation for people already using iPhones, Macs, and iPads. Its ecosystem integration makes passwords, purchases, authentication, and playback smoother, and older Apple TVs can remain useful for years.Chromecast is gone as a hardware brand, replaced by the Google TV Streamer. The comedian Fred Armisen has a thing for sound: he's a former punk-rocker who gets a lot of comic mileage from doing accents, and he released an album of sound effects—a modern update of a novelty genre from his youth. “100 Sound Effects” came out last year, on the venerable indie label Drag City. The track titles are themselves little punch lines: “Guitar Tuned but Still Somehow Out of Tune,” “Supportive Booing at a Speech,” and “Terrified Audience at an Authoritarian Nation Official Event.” Armisen talked with the staff writer Michael Schulman about sound effects and the origins of his love for accents, and they went out to do some sound recording of their own on the summer streets of New York.    This segment was produced with assistance from John DeLore.  This segment originally aired on August 29, 2025.
