HBS 035 Interview w_ Robbie Kaplan -Then Comes Marriage_ United States v. Windsor and the Defeat of DOMA Roberta A. "Robbie" Kaplan is an American lawyer. She is the founding partner of Kaplan & Company, LLP, a law firm dedicated to commercial litigation and public interest matters, and an adjunct professor of law at Columbia University Law School. Until July 2017, she was a partner in the Litigation Department of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison. Kaplan successfully argued before the Supreme Court of the United States on behalf of her client, Edith Windsor, in United States v. Windsor (2013). This resulted in a landmark decision that invalidated a section of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), thus requiring the federal government to recognize same-sex marriages. Windsor led to the 2015 Supreme Court ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges, which struck down all remaining state and federal laws against same-sex marriage across the United States. United States v. Windsor In 2009, Kaplan agreed to represent Edie Windsor pro bono. Windsor's wife, Thea Spyer, had died two years after they wed in Canada, leaving Windsor her sole heir. But because their marriage was not recognized under existing U. S. federal law, Windsor received an estate tax bill of $363,053. Windsor went to gay rights advocates seeking redress but could find no one to take her case. She was referred to Kaplan, who later recalled, "When I heard her story, it took me about five seconds, maybe less, to agree to represent her." Kaplan had been co-counsel on the unsuccessful bid for marriage equality in New York state in 2006. In a spirited exchange between Kaplan and Chief Justice John Roberts during oral arguments for the case, Roberts alleged that politicians were "falling all over themselves" to support her case. Kaplan responded, "The fact of the matter is, Mr. Chief Justice, is that no other group in recent history has been subjected to popular referenda to take away rights that have already been given or exclude those rights, the way gay people have." On June 26, 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a 5-4 decision declaring Section 3 of DOMA to be unconstitutional. Edith Windsor declared, "Robbie Kaplan said, as Martin Luther King said before her, there is no wrong time to seek justice." Roberta (Robbie) Kaplan, the founding partner at Kaplan & Company, LLP, one of the few women-led elite boutique litigation law firms has been described as a “powerhouse corporate litigator” and “pressure junkie” who “thrives on looking at the big picture” whether “in the gay-marriage legal fight or high-profile corporate scandals.”  She has been selected as one of “The 100 Most Influential Lawyers” in the United States, as a “Litigator of the Year” by The American Lawyer, and as a “Lawyer of the Year” by Above the Law. In addition to representing large institutional and corporate clients like Fitch Ratings, Airbnb, Columbia University and T-Mobile,  Robbie book “Then Comes Marriage: United States v. Windsor and the Defeat of DOMA” (W.W. Norton 2015),  was chosen by the L.A. Times and Ms. Magazine as one of the top 10 books of 2015.  In commenting on the book, President Bill Clinton called Robbie an “American hero.” Robbie has received numerous recognitions for her legal accomplishments and charitable activities, including the New York Law Journal Lifetime Achievement Award;  Financial Times Legal Innovator of the Year; the Columbia Law School Medal of Excellence; as well as an honorary doctorate from the Jewish Theological Seminary.   Kaplan wrote about United States v. He holds a BA in Radio-TV-Film from Howard University and an MFA from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts graduate film school. The Film Pops Three stories of African American men from different socio-economic backgrounds and regions engaged in the beautiful struggle of fatherhood. Pops is a documentary web series about African American men facing the toughest challenge of their lives: becoming good fathers. Pops addresses the reality and challenges of 21st-century parenthood for African American fathers. The media narrative of the deadbeat black father is generally accepted as a fact of life for African American children. Buried beneath these assumptions are the facts of black fatherhood that dispel some of those stereotypes. The web series follows the parenting experiences of Shaka Senghor, LaGuardia Cross, and the Stroman-Iniss family during the course of a year. Each father explores the universal themes of responsibility, nurturing and love. They differ in personalities, socioeconomic backgrounds, and struggles but share the collective experience of fatherhood. Their stories serve to reflect the reality of black fathers in America. Shot in verité documentary style rich with raw, intimate moments, each character reveals what fatherhood looks like in their world. Steven Peros is an American playwright, screenwriter, director, and television writer. He is the author of both the stage play and screenplay for The Cat's Meow, which was made into the 2002 Lionsgate film directed by Peter Bogdanovich and starring Kirsten Dunst, Eddie Izzard, Edward Herrmann, Carey Elwes, Jennifer Tilly, and Joanna Lumley. Additional Film Writing credits include his directorial debut, Footprints (2011), which was hailed as "One of the Ten Best Films So Far This Year" by Armond White, Chairman of the New York Film Critics Circle and was similarly praised by critics Kevin Thomas, F.X. Feeney, Mick LaSalle,and White during the film's initial release. He followed this with The Undying (2011), which he directed and co-wrote, and which starred Robin Weigert, Wes Studi, Jay O. Sanders, and Sybil Temtchine. As a playwright, The Cat's Meow had its world premiere in Los Angeles in 1997 and is published by Samuel French, Inc. It has been performed in four countries as of 2013. His earlier play, Karlaboy (1994) also premiered in Los Angeles where it received a Drama-Logue Award for Outstanding Achievement in Writing. It is also published by Samuel French.   The film takes place aboard publisher William Randolph Hearst's yacht on a weekend cruise celebrating Ince's 44th birthday on November 16, 1924. Among those in attendance are Hearst's longtime companion and film actress Marion Davies, fellow actor Charlie Chaplin, writer Elinor Glyn, columnist Louella Parsons, and actress Margaret Livingston. The celebration is cut short by an unusual death that would go on to become the subject of legendary Hollywood folklore. Natalie is the author of Queen Sugar, soon to be adapted for television by writer/director Ava DuVernay of “Selma” fame, and co-produced by Oprah Winfrey for OWN, Oprah’s television network. Dr. Sheril Antonio is an Associate Arts Professor in the department of Art and Public Policy and the Associate Dean of the Kanbar Institute of Film & Television. From 2008/9, she served as the chair of the Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music and was that department'€™s inaugural chair in 2003/4. She also served as chair of the Graduate Film Program in 2001/2 and for two years from 2013/15 the interim chair of the Goldberg Department of Dramatic Writing. Tina Mabry an American film writer and director from Tupelo, Mississippi. Following the release of her first feature film Mississippi Damned (2009), she was named one of '25 New Faces of Indie Film' by Filmmaker Magazine and among the 'Top Forty Under 40' by Advocate Magazine. Mabry was named a James Baldwin Fellow in Media by United States Artists. A native of Tupelo, Mississippi, Tina Mabry graduated from the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts with an MFA in Film Production in 2005. While participating in Film Independent’s (FIND) Project: Involve, Tina finished developing and writing her short film, BROOKLYN’S BRIDGE TO JORDAN, which she went on to direct. The film screened at more than fifty film festivals worldwide and won multiple Jury and Audience Awards as well as an award for Best Director. BROOKLYN’S BRIDGE TO JORDAN aired on Showtime Networks, BET J (now Centric), and was voted the #1 film on the season finale of LOGO’s The Click List 2: Best in Short Film. Shortly after graduating from USC, Tina co-wrote the feature screenplay ITTY BITTY TITTY COMMITTEE, which was directed by Jamie Babbit (BUT I’M A CHEERLEADER). The film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival (2007) and won Best Feature Narrative at the South by Southwest Film & Music Festival (2007). In 2008, Tina participated in the FIND’s Directors Lab with her feature film, MISSISSIPPI DAMNED; the film was later awarded the Kodak Film Grant. While playing on the festival circuit, MISSISSIPPI DAMNED garnered an impressive thirteen awards from participation in fifteen film festivals including awards for Best Feature Film and Best Screenplay at the Chicago International Film Festival (2009). The film premiered on Showtime Networks in February 2011. Tina was named among the “25 New Faces of Independent Film” in Filmmaker Magazine in July of 2009 and was recognized by Out Magazine as one of the most inspirational and outstanding people of 2009. She was featured in the Advocate magazine as part of their “Top Forty Under 40” issue, which features the top 40 individuals who are raising the bar in their respective fields. With over 300 nominated artists and only 50 selected artists, Tina was named the James Baldwin Fellow in Media by United States Artists, a national grant-making, and artist advocacy organization, in December of 2010. Tina’s latest feature, COUNTY LINE, was accepted into FIND’s 2010 Screenwriters Lab. In April 2011, the script participated in Tribeca All Access where it won the Tribeca All Access Creative Promise Award. COUNTY LINE also took part in FIND’s Fast Track, a film financing market, which was held during the Los Angeles Film Festival 2011. Concluding in June 2012, Tina participated in the Fox Writers Intensive, which is a highly selective writer’s initiative designed to introduce experienced writers with unique voices, backgrounds, life and professional experiences that reflect the diverse perspectives of FOX’s television and feature film audiences. Independent Television Service produced Tina’s latest short film, CROSSOVER, as part of their FUTURESTATES program; a series of independent mini-features showing visions of what life in America will be like in decades to come. Zak Piper is an Emmy-winning Documentary Producer who previously served as Director of Production at Kartemquin Films for more than a decade. Most recently, Zak produced Saving Mes Aynak, which follows an Afghan archaeologist as he and his team race to save a 2,000-year-old Buddhist archaeological site in Afghanistan from imminent demolition by a Chinese copper mine. The film premiered at IDFA in 2014 and is being represented by Autlook Film Sales for international distribution. Zak also produced the critically acclaimed film Life Itself, which premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and was an official selection of the 67th Cannes Film Festival. For this film, Zak received the Producers Guild of America award for Outstanding Producer of a Documentary Theatrical Motion Picture. Bythewood, a law-abiding Yank fan, boxed as a teenager and went to the High School of Performing Arts as a drama major. He received a BFA in theater from Marymount Manhattan College. After acting in a John Sayles film called, The Brother From Another Planet, he was inspired to write and direct. Bythewood formed a theater company with some friends called, The Tribe, which produced plays written and directed by Bythewood. Bythewood moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in screenwriting and became one of the first members of Disney's prestigious Writers Fellowship Program. From there, he was hired as a writer on the hit NBC comedy series, "A Different World" where he met his future wife, Gina Prince-Bythewood (a Dodgers fan). He went on to write and produce Dick Wolf's drama series "New York Undercover." After attending the Million Man March, Bythewood wrote the screenplay for Spike Lee's indie film, "Get On The Bus." Bythewood was also one of the film's investors. Bythewood made his feature film directorial debut on the acclaimed indie flick, "Dancing in September." It was acquired by HBO and became an HBO original movie. Bythewood has also written and directed "Biker Boyz," the documentary, "Daddy's Girl," the ESPN 30-for-30 documentary, "One Night In Vegas" and "Gun Hill," the two-hour pilot for BET. He also did the rewrites for the Fox Searchlight film, "Notorious" and was awarded written by credit along with the film's initial writer, Cheo Hodari Coker. Bythewood resides in southern California with his wife, filmmaker, Gina Prince-Bythewood Gina Prince-Bythewood (Film Director - an American film director and screenwriter. Night of the Living Dead is a 1968 black-and-white American independent horror film directed by George A. Romero, starring Duane Jones, Judith O’Dea, and Karl Hardman. John Russo is an American screenwriter and film director most commonly associated with the 1968 horror classic film Night of the Living Dead. As a screenwriter, his credits include Night of the Living Dead, The Majorettes, Midnight, and Santa Claws. The latter two, he also directed. He has performed small roles as an actor, most notably the first ghoul who was stabbed in the head in Night of the Living Dead, as well as cameos in There's Always Vanilla and House of Frankenstein 1997. John Russo is also the founder and one of the co-mentors along with Russell Steiner of the John Russo Movie Making Program at DuBois Business College in DuBois, Pennsylvania The film premiered on October 1, 1968, and was completed on a $114,000 budget. The film became a financial success, grossing $12 million domestically and $18 million internationally. Night of the Living Dead was heavily criticized at its release owing to explicit content, but eventually garnered critical acclaim and has been selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry as a film deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.” The film has entered the public domain due to an error by the distributor. The story follows characters Ben (Duane Jones), Barbara (Judith O’Dea), and five others trapped in a rural farmhouse in Pennsylvania which is attacked by unnamed “living dead” monsters which later became known in popular culture as zombies. Night of the Living Dead was the basis of five subsequent Living Dead films (1978–2010) also directed by Romero and has inspired remakes. Plot Summary of the Film Night of the Living Dead: Barbra (Judith O'Dea) and Johnny Blair (Russell Streiner) drive to rural Pennsylvania for an annual visit to their father's grave. This was their mother's request. Johnny teases, "They're coming to get you, Barbra," noticing Barbra's discomfort. She is then attacked by a strange man (Bill Hinzman). Johnny tries to rescue his sister, but the strange man throws him against a gravestone; Johnny strikes his head on the stone and dies. Barbra flees by car but crashes into a tree. She escapes on foot, with the stranger in pursuit, and later arrives at a farmhouse, where she discovers a woman's mangled corpse. She is confronted by strange menacing figures, running out of the house, like the man in the graveyard. Ben (Duane Jones) takes her into the house. Ben drives the monsters from the house and seals the doors and windows as Barbra slowly descends into shock and insanity. Ben and Barbra are unaware that the farmhouse has a cellar, housing an angry married couple Harry (Karl Hardman) and Helen Cooper (Marilyn Eastman), along with their daughter Karen (Kyra Schon). They sought refuge after a group of zombies overturned their car. Tom (Keith Wayne) and Judy (Judith Ridley), who are a teenage couple, arrived after hearing an emergency broadcast about a series of brutal murders. Karen has fallen seriously ill after being bitten by one of the zombies. They ventured upstairs when Ben turns on a radio while Barbra awakens from a stupor. Harry demands that everyone hide in the cellar, but Ben deems it a "deathtrap" and continues upstairs, to barricade the house with Tom's help. Radio reports explained that a wave of mass murder is sweeping across the eastern United States. The emergency broadcaster reports that the recently deceased have become reanimated and are consuming the flesh of the living, from the television Ben, finds. Experts, scientists, and the United States military fail to discover the cause though one scientist suspects radioactive contamination from a space probe. It returned from Venus and deliberately exploded in the Earth's atmospheres when the radiation was detected. Interview with Academy Winner Nicolas Cage (Unedited Version) Nicolas Cage is an American actor and producer. He has performed in leading roles in a variety of films, ranging from romantic comedies and dramas to science fiction and action films.In the early years of his career, Cage starred in films such as Valley Girl (1983), Racing with the Moon (1984), Birdy (1984), Peggy Sue Got Married (1986), Raising Arizona (1987), Moonstruck (1987), Vampire's Kiss (1989), Wild at Heart (1990), Honeymoon in Vegas (1992), and Red Rock West (1993).Cage received an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Award for his performance as an alcoholic Hollywood writer in Leaving Las Vegas (1995) before coming to the attention of wider audiences with mainstream films such as The Rock (1996), Face/Off (1997), Con Air (1997), City of Angels (1998), and National Treasure (2004). He earned his second Academy Award nomination for his performance as Charlie and Donald Kaufman in Adaptation (2002). In 2002, he directed the film Sonny, for which he was nominated for Grand Special Prize at Deauville Film Festival. Cage owns the production company Saturn Films and has produced films such as Shadow of the Vampire (2000) and The Life of David Gale (2003). Through his performances in The Weather Man (2005), Lord of War (2005), The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (2009), and Kick-Ass (2010) he earned critical acclaim. Films such as Ghost Rider (2007) and Knowing (2009) were box office successes. Cage has been strongly criticized in recent years for his choice of roles, some of which have been universally panned.[2][3] However, he recently starred in The Croods and Joe, both of which were warmly received by critics.Joe is a 2013 drama film directed by David Gordon Green and starring Nicolas Cage, Tye Sheridan and Ronnie Gene Blevins. It is an adaptation of Larry Brown's 1991 novel of the same name and premiered at the 2013 Venice Film Festival, with a subsequent screening at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.
