Fire, Fair, and Fame: A Du Quoin Disaster

Du Quoin, Illinois is having a rough week, and this one hits close to home.Massive downtown fire in Rafe's hometown of Du Quoin. Multiple businesses were destroyed, including Home Lumber Company, BJ's Garden Inn and other properties along the downtown business district. Making an already difficult situation even worse, the fire happened during the Du Quoin State Fair, one of the biggest economic weeks of the year for the small Southern Illinois community.Rafe talks about seeing the damage to a downtown that's already watched businesses disappear over the years, while Lern shares her own memories of growing up nearby and planning entire summers around the Du Quoin State Fair. Thankfully, the transcript reports no injuries or deaths, but the loss is still devastating for a town of roughly 6,000 people. So the crew sends some love south and encourages everybody heading to the fair to support Du Quoin however they can. Then, eventually, the daily comedy machine starts malfunctioning again. The conversation turns into a full Southern Illinois State Fair nostalgia session, complete with Wiz Khalifa, Russell Dickerson, demo derbies, Night Ranger and Rafe remembering the time he watched Joe Diffie put on what felt like a full stadium concert inside a tiny Budweiser beer tent. Rafe also officially declares the Du Quoin State Fair superior to the Illinois State Fair in Springfield. Complaints may be directed to somebody who cares. From there, September 3rd's collection of completely necessary national holidays introduces National Welsh Rarebit Day, which briefly causes confusion over whether anyone is eating a rabbit. They're not. It's cheese. That discovery leads directly to Worcestershire sauce, pork-steak marinades and the shocking revelation that Rafe doesn't own a grill. On Labor Day weekend. We don't make the rules, but we're pretty sure that's grounds for deportation from the Midwest.Luckily, Lern has an even worse idea. After talking with Tim Virgin, she introduces a potential reality-dating concept called Rock Hard Island. The premise involves eligible bachelors from St. Louis rock radio, women applying to date them and enough trash-TV energy to immediately attract hypothetical sponsors. There isn't actually an island involved, but that's apparently a minor logistical concern. Even more alarming: sales is interested.Nothing bad has ever happened after those three words. The crew also takes a trip through September 3rd history, covering everything from the beginning of World War II to Vince Lombardi, Iron Maiden's Powerslave, Prince's massive Warner Bros. deal, Charlie Sheen's 1995 marriage and the founding of eBay.Then Lern takes over for Crap on Celebrities with a packed entertainment rundown. There's a documentary about late Rush drummer Neil Peart featuring Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and fellow drummers including Stewart Copeland, Chad Smith and Danny Carey. Rush is also headed back to St. Louis, giving Moon another chance to see a band he thought he'd never get to experience after Peart's death. There's Beck news for local record-store fans, TV talk involving Chad Powers and The Gentlemen, a rundown of the upcoming Dancing with the Stars cast, and news involving Wheel of Fortune. The show also discusses an upcoming documentary about The Office and remembers Gloria Steinem and her enormous influence on American journalism and the women's movement. Then we arrive at one of those debates designed specifically to waste productive adults' time: the greatest movie and television villains ever.Darth Vader? Obviously.Annie Wilkes? Terrifying.Voldemort? Sure.Hannibal Lecter? Yep.The Joker? Somehow they almost forgot him.The crew runs through villains ranging from Cruella de Vil and Scar to Patrick Bateman, Magneto, John Doe and Dr. Evil, proving once again that this daily comedy show can turn almost any entertainment list into an argument. Finally, Moon breaks down which music genres are supposedly most popular in different states based on search trends, with pop leading the country, metal putting up an impressive fight and Sleep Token emerging as a heavily searched metal act. Then it's birthday time, which means any remaining professionalism is escorted from the building. We've got Charlie Sheen, King Scott's twin Shaun White, Kaia Gerber, Todd Lewis, Steve Jones and more before Rafe handles the final birthday honors and everybody briefly convinces themselves that Amber Lynn is dead. She isn't.Great work, team. It's a show that starts with genuine concern for a Southern Illinois community, takes a detour through State Fair memories, somehow invents a trashy St. Louis dating show, argues about fictional villains and ends with an accidental celebrity death announcement. In other words, another perfectly normal episode of daily comedy from The Rizzuto Show.Follow The Rizzuto Show → linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → 1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Why hasn’t The Sound of Music been remade? That question makes us ponder the rules that determine which Hollywood properties can be recycled indefinitely and which apparently must remain untouched. Movie scenes and celebrity anecdotes keep complicating the distinction between cultural treasure and something people simply like for no good reason. Someone made proposal that Dolly Parton needs to be a saint, a proposal that's problematic on it's own terms but doubly probIematic when the proposition comes from an atheist. If canonization worked by popular vote, celebrities would arrive with ready-made constituencies, because fame has a way of turning reputation into evidence of virtue. Popular celebrities are assigned virtues by their fans. The focus widens to another cultural achievement: convincing people to buy things that are readily available for free. Water, dirt, coffee, and other everyday products become examples of what happens when marketing convinces us to pay a premium price for bargain level items. By the time the Hollywood Walk of Fame enters the discussion, movies, sainthood, products, and celebrity status are all running on surprisingly similar rules. A classic film can become too revered to remake, Dolly Parton can accumulate saintly credentials through public affection, and water or dirt can acquire value through presentation—while Hollywood puts famous names into the sidewalk and lets everybody walk on them.

Hi there EICrocodiles! Today's bonus episode is dedicated to the myth, the legend… Jordan AKA The Pricey AKA Katie Price. In July, Louis Theroux's production company released a four-part documentary series offering a retrospective on the 30 years Price has spent in the public eye, and reflecting on the fallout of living a life seemingly dedicated to headline culture. For some she's a a national treasure, an icon of the 90s and 00s and a fixture of British culture. Others criticise her for a history of questionable behaviour. In this episode we dive into the picture painted of Katie Price in this docuseries, how she has bounced back after a series of traumas and scandals, and why our soft spot doesn't seem to want to go away. Was Katie Price the original Molly-Mae? Are we willing to set aside her scandals for entertainment value? Is this just a woman processing trauma? Oh hey ToastersWelcome to another episode of Amazon History Diving! This week we have huge news: Jamelia has bought a LOT of things on Amazon. Like, a LOT.295 orders in a single year, in fact. Spoiler alert there.Behind the stationery, fabric conditioner, photography equipment, rat poison, high-vis clothing and inexplicable metal detector, though, is the story of an extraordinary few years and an extraordinarily cool woman. This week, during a brilliantly candid rummage through another Amazon history, Jamelia (WHO IS A FAN OF THE SHOW) takes us from homeschooling and the terrifying intrusion of the tabloid press, through lockdown and an ever-changing collection of new hobbies, to the breakdown of her marriage while pregnant with her fourth daughter and the beginning of a completely new life in Dubai. Drama-rama, frankly.Along the way we discover why writing her own songs was one of the best decisions Jamelia ever made, why she once dressed like a construction worker simply because she had hired a skip, why her attempt to make all her baby's clothes resulted in precisely ZERO garments, and why one of her daughters has recently required a metal detector. It's funny, surprisingly moving and gloriously chaotic. Because of COURSE it is because it's My Mate Bought a Toaster!Welcome to the many, many, MANY Amazon eras of Jamelia.Don't forget to give us a big fat follow on all the socials please:

Happy Hump Day, yo! We got a ton of rain during the overnight which makes me wonder why I watered my lawn yesterday in the afternoon??? Derp. Anyway, speaking of water...we had a few news stories about water this morning. One was about the flooding at Zion National Park, and the other was about a private water line for a data center that leaked over 3 million gallons of water. Also in the news this morning, Tony Romo plead "no contest" to his DUI, more info on the deadly stabbing incident in NYC earlier this week, a 14 year-old girl who got pregnant by her own father, Dolly Parton's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is getting replaced after it was vandalized, and Bonnie Blue gave birth. In sports, the Brewers bounced back and got a 9-4 win over the Cubs last night, the Packers have NOT seen the footage in the Josh Jacobs case, the Vikings sign Kyle Van Noy to the practice squad, Keenan Allen should be on the field for the Colts in Week 1 after his recent DUI arrest, a look at the upcoming NCAAF schedule, and the Angels are finally getting sold to Stan Kroenke. We talked about what's on TV & streaming today/tonight. Plus, the guy who does the announcing on "Wheel of Fortune" is suspended, and a documentary about Matthew Perry is coming to Netflix in October. Brian recently found out some very interesting things about some of the people living in his neighborhood and is now wondering if he's gotta move. Elsewhere in sports, an updated on the college football running back who died after suffering a seizure on the sidelines, a coach from "Last Chance U" gets fired, a high school football team refused to participate in a pre-game handshake, an Arizona school district cancels it's entire season, and a wild brawl between youth football coaches in Pennsylvania. A principal of a school in Nepal reacted quickly and saved hundreds of lives from that recent flooding, and a class ring was found with a metal detector & made it's way back to the original owner! It's "One Gotta Go Wednesday" and this morning's edition dealt with some of the best sophomore albums of all time! Nirvana's "Nevermind". Led Zeppelin's "Led Zeppelin II". Alice in Chain's "Dirt". Or Motley Crue's "Shout At The Devil". Which one are you getting rid of? Would you say that Wisconsin is a "fun state"??? According to some new research, we aren't doing too bad compared to the rest of the nation. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a couple of guys who got arrested for making jokes about explosives at an airport, a Japanese man arrested for the massacre of a bunch of hamsters, the serial pooper in Utah got arrested finally, and the serial butt-sniffer in California also got arrested........again! Plus, someone named "Crooked Jess" decided to do something crooked. Go figure. And a dude from WI broke into a bar after-hours & stole some White Claws and vodka while rocking a Packer robe.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Keith Reza sits down with actress Karen Cliche for a fun, wide-ranging conversation that moves from horror movies and Hollywood stories to real-life fears, career pivots, family, and the strange things that stay with us from childhood. Karen talks about her new movie The Ice Cream Man and what it was like acting opposite Eli Roth while he was also directing. She shares how that creative dynamic worked on set, how they built believable parents for the film, and why grounding horror in recognizable family energy makes the chaos hit harder. The conversation also revisits Karen's work in Thanksgiving and Saw VI, including the physical demands of horror performances and how imagination plays a huge role in selling fear on screen. Beyond film, Karen opens up about life between Canada and Los Angeles, being in the process of applying for a U.S. work visa, her thoughts on fame at conventions, food, health-conscious pizza experiments, protecting kids from exploitation, and even a wild detour into pyramid theories. It's funny, candid, and packed with the kind of unexpected tangents that make Reza Rifts such an entertaining listen. ABC:LHS #090    We start with three ballpark Franks... ...Francis Richter, whose writing helped to make the game respectable; he is in the Baseball Hall of Hame. ...Frank Fleer, the man who ALMOST invented the pink gum that's accompanied baseball cards for nearly a century. ...Frank Bettger, who went from failure to success after he blew out his throwing arm in Chicago (prepared and presented by fellow guide Rich Wilhelm). ...Joseph Howard Berry, Jr., who is in two Halls of Fame but is nearly forgotten today because of an unfortunate nickname; yes, it's that bad. ...Thomas Mitchell, partial owner of the Phillies during some lean times, including the staggeringly bad 1930 season; on the bright side, he co-founded Jupiter Island, Florida. I will release an optional segment on September 5th about the rich history of baseball nicknames, and the problems with who does the naming.

Episode 247Olivia Jordan is the first and only woman from Oklahoma ever crowned Miss USA, and she has built an acting career across NCIS, Hawaii Five-0, Dollface and a run of Lifetime leads. She is also one of the most honest guests I have had about what pursuing a dream actually looks like. She set out 15 years ago wanting to be a series regular on a TV show. That has not happened yet. She is still going, and she can tell you exactly why.We talk about how she checks in with herself when the outside voices get loud, why the growth she can measure year over year is the real reward, and what it takes to stop living on someone else's timeline. She tells the small world story of how she found her way into Cody Mayo Studios here in Tulsa, which started with one of my own articles in a dentist's waiting room. She talks about her medallion on the Circle Cinema Walk of Fame, the place she calls the heart of Oklahoma film. And she shares how she is raising her daughter Lola with room for big feelings, using meditation and affirmations they have practiced since Lola was an infant, plus a reminder every mom needs about giving herself grace.Olivia is writing her first TEDx talk, "Your Pursuit Is Your Purpose," and the idea in it stayed with me all week. You are already doing what you are supposed to be doing, just by getting up every morning and moving forward. It is okay if you have not reached the dream job yet. You are moving.Follow Olivia on Instagram at @theoliviajordan. Before she became Lady London, Zaire Stewart was a fly toddler exploring New York City's unique beauty culture. At just three years old, she was being carted to Dominican hair salons, getting her hair washed and pressed by the same women she still visits today. Her mother kept her dapper in DKNY and Moschino as they traveled between the Bronx and New Jersey. Greatly influenced by the beauty and brilliance of the women in her family, an aunt with an interest in global politics and anti-apartheid messaging recommended her name; it's no wonder Lady London is such a cultural force. In 2018, Lady London developed an interest in music, built on a foundational love of literature from childhood to college. Lady London joined Naked Beauty to talk about how she discovered she had presence and how she wielded it into a nearly decade-long career and fanbase of more than a million people.During our conversation, we talked about how she learned to maintain her composure as a public figure and how her confidence can't be shaken by industry execs or online trolls. Lady London shares that her confidence was well earned, as it took her some time to accept that she could be beautiful and smart without downplaying one or the other. We get some tips on how to model that self-assurance during the Show & Tell portion of the show, when Lady London demonstrates how not to be baited. Of course, we learn all about her beauty rituals, tips, and favorite perfumes. We got other advice from Lady London, including how she mentors women coming into the industry behind her, and what she's learned from the hip-hop legend pouring into her. Andy Warhol said there was nothing behind the surface. The CIA, Valerie Solanas, and John Lennon all disagreed.Born in a two-room shack in Pittsburgh to Slovakian immigrants, Andy Warhol became the most famous and influential artist of the twentieth century. He invented Pop Art, redefined celebrity, predicted social media before the internet existed, and coined the phrase "fifteen minutes of fame" before anyone knew what to do with it. From Campbell's Soup Cans and the Factory to managing the Velvet Underground and founding Interview magazine, this is the complete story of the man behind the wig. We also cover the CIA's covert use of American art as a Cold War weapon, the 1968 shooting that changed him permanently, his complex relationship with the AIDS crisis, and why John Lennon once refused to open a hotel door because Warhol was on the other side of it with a camera.https://www.patreon.com/HistorysGreatestIdiotshttps://www.instagram.com/historysgreatestidiotshttps://buymeacoffee.com/historysgreatestidiotsArtist: Sarah Cheyhttps://www.fiverr.com/sarahchey

In this episode of Tall Boy Radio, host Beans sits down for an in-depth conversation with Mark Roberge, the driving force and drummer behind the powerhouse Boston alternative metal band, Prospect Hill. From childhood dreams to the stark realities of the modern music business, Mark shares the lessons learned over a twenty-year career, offering a masterclass in resilience, authentic fan connection, and what it truly takes to survive as an independent creator. The episode kicks off with a trip down memory lane, charting Prospect Hill's evolution from a group of school friends jamming in Massachusetts back in 1998 to a worldwide touring act. Mark gives listeners an inside look at the bond required to keep a band together through label deals, lineup shifts, and the grueling life of the road.Fans of the band will appreciate the deep dive into their discography, touching on how early fan-demanded hits like "Come Alive" broke into the Billboard Top 40 charts. The guys also discuss the powerful reimagining of their staple track "Victim," which featured Taproot's Stephen Richards. The conversation naturally flows into their hard-hitting, defiant single, "Blood in the Water." Mark breaks down the raw emotion behind the track—capturing that exact moment when the pressure builds and doubt creeps in, but you choose to fight harder instead of folding.Transitioning from the stage to the studio boardroom, Mark opens up about his role as an author. He breaks down the core philosophies found in his book, The Indie Artist's Compass.Designed specifically as a tactical roadmap for startup bands, the book shifts musicians away from chasing empty "vanity metrics" on social media and teaches them how to run their band like a lean entrepreneur. Beans and Mark discuss why modern bands need clear systems, a solid business strategy, and how the "FAME" framework can save independent artists years of costly, frustrating mistakes. To wrap up the episode, Mark explains how his real-world frustrations with broken industry systems led him to launch fanflowy.com.In an era where algorithms gatekeep content from an artist's own followers, Mark emphasizes the absolute necessity of direct-to-fan relationships. Listeners get a breakdown of how FanFlowy uses automation and multi-channel strategies to help creators capture, own, and nurture their audience—proving that a dedicated "backyard" fan base is the ultimate currency for long-term artistic survival.Whether you are a lifelong Prospect Hill fan, a musician looking to get your band off the ground, or a creator trying to decode audience growth, this episode of Tall Boy Radio delivers heavy-hitting inspiration and actionable advice.Find Prospect Hill on SpotifyProspect Hill | SpotifyFind Marks' business onlineHome - Make Our MusicProspect Hill Official WebsiteFind Mark on Instagram(4) Instagramtallboyradio.com

Send us Fan MailGeorge S. Boutwell played an important role across key moments of American history - including the Civil War, the Reconstruction period and later in his career - the Anti-Imperialist movement. You will hear the fascinating arc of his life - from humble beginnings in a Massachusetts farming family, to Governor of that that state, and then onto roles as a cabinet appointee through multiple presidents including Lincoln and Grant.I was delighted to interview Jeffrey Boutwell, who is a writer, historian, and science policy specialist living in Columbia, Maryland. He came to write the biography of Boutwell, a distant relative, after a 40-year career in journalism, government and international scientific research organizations. He has written and spoken widely on issues ranging from nuclear weapons arms control to Middle East peace to environmental degradation and conflict.Links of interest:Book - Boutwell: Radical Republican and Champion of Democracy (link here)Jeffrey Boutwell Website (link here) or www.jeffreyboutwell.comMuseum of American Finance (link here)There are other historically related episodes in this series as follows:Teddy Roosevelt and Henry Cabot Lodge - A Valuable Friendship.General Lew Wallace - Key Historical Figure of the 19th Century, Author and Civil War GeneralMy website link is here or www.kathleenlangone.com. https://www.voltairesghost.comInstagramBioVoltaire's GhostVoltaire's Ghost is a gothic rock trio from Western Colorado with a penchant for love, death, and the sounds in between. Comprised of Ruby Juhl on vocals, Joshua Eggstaff on drums, and Magnus on guitars and production, the band has been creating music together since 2023, touring throughout California, Texas, and Colorado and bringing their distinctive sound to the stages of renowned venues across the region.Following the success of their 2025 record Death Becomes You, Voltaire's Ghost earned a Semi Finalist placement in America's Next Top Hitmaker, sponsored by Rolling Stone, competing against more than 70,000 contestants. The recognition helped propel a run of singles that ultimately led to the band's 13 track album Black Petals Fallen.Recorded in Colorado and mixed in Los Angeles, Black Petals Fallen was engineered by Grammy nominated Joe Ayoub. The album captures the band's evolving sound while exploring its recurring themes of love, loss, darkness, and mortality. Its fourth single, “‘Till The Break of Day,” takes a softer and more romantic turn, offering a bittersweet slow dance that steps outside the album's predominantly gothic atmosphere. The song tells the story of two people destined to share only one night together, capturing the beauty and sadness of a love that cannot last. “‘Till The Break of Day” continues Voltaire's Ghost's fascination with the intersection of love and death, but approaches those themes with warmth and vulnerability. The song began years ago as a rough demo written by Magnus. When Ruby and Josh discovered the original recording, they immediately connected with its emotional potential. What started as a simple sketch gradually became a fully realized collaboration, with Ruby's expressive vocals and Josh's instinctive drumming transforming the original idea into something much more expansive.Magnus describes the evolution simply: “It went from a rough sketch to a beautiful painting.”Ruby preserved the original lyrics while bringing her own phrasing and emotional interpretation to the song. Josh found an immediate connection with the arrangement, recognizing an opening for drums that allowed him to shape the track naturally. “This one was easy to jump into and start playing,” he says. “It captured me right away. It's my favorite song on the album, even though it's a softer song.”The band describes “‘Till The Break of Day” as a song that has gradually become “more sweet than bitter.” At its heart, the track is about recognizing the rare people who feel like home from the moment we meet them and holding on to those connections, even when circumstances make them impossible to keep. It explores the timeless question of whether it is better to experience love and lose it or never experience it at all.“‘Till The Break of Day” is scheduled for release on August 14, while Black Petals Fallen is available for digital purchase on Bandcamp. A vinyl pre order is also available through the band's website.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/creator-to-creators-with-meosha-bean--4460322/support.

Dave Asprey and Gabby Reece Talk Testosterone Therapy, Scream Cream, Autism as a Superpower, Cancer Protocols, and Surviving Fame in This Double Interview Episode Mega-Episode time! Your hormones might be causing symptoms you've been blaming on aging, stress, or your heart. This double interview episode gives you a real look at biohacking from two different angles: cutting-edge longevity science and the lived experience of hormone optimization after 50. Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR Host Dave Asprey sits down with Gabby Reece, an American athletic icon, wellness entrepreneur, and one of the most influential voices in women's health, fitness, and performance. A former professional beach volleyball player who became Nike's first female spokesperson and shoe designer, Gabby set volleyball records at Florida State University that still stand today, and her signature Nike shoe line famously outsold Air Jordan during its release. She has since built a career at the intersection of performance and longevity, co-founding Hamilton House, Laird Superfood (NYSE: LSF), XPT, and HIGHX, and hosting both The Gabby Reece Show and the Proof of Practice podcast alongside leading voices in women's health and evidence-based performance. She is also a New York Times bestselling author. In this episode, Gabby turns the tables and interviews Dave herself, creating a rare two-way conversation between two people deeply immersed in human performance and biohacking. Dave and Gabby dig into how mitochondria function as quantum systems that shape everything from cognitive performance to spiritual perception, why autism can come with genuine neurological superpowers, and what actually happens in the body when hormone levels shift after 40. Gabby shares her personal protocol, including weekly testosterone injections, an estradiol patch, and a compounded hormone cream that most people have never heard of, and explains how correcting her hormones, not her thyroid, resolved a heart arrhythmia doctors initially missed. The conversation also covers Dave's approach to cancer protocols, why he avoids GLP-1 drugs despite their longevity benefits, the peptides he actually uses for mitochondrial renewal, and how cyclical ketosis, fasting, and a carnivore-leaning diet fit into a sustainable performance strategy. They also talk about AI's growing role in personalized longevity research, sleep optimization while traveling, and the supplement and functional medicine protocols Dave relies on daily. You'll Learn: Why Gabby's heart arrhythmia turned out to be a hormone problem, not a cardiac one, and how testosterone fixed it when nothing else worked What "scream cream" actually is, how it works through vasodilation, and why doctors quietly prescribe it during hormone replacement therapy How mitochondria function as quantum systems and why improving their function can sharpen intuition, focus, and perception Why Dave believes autism comes paired with real cognitive advantages once the physical burden of the condition is addressed What Dave would actually do if diagnosed with cancer, from antifungal protocols to high-power infrared light and early detection screening The peptides Dave uses for mitochondrial renewal, including SS31 and lesser-known Russian bioregulators like epitalon and pinealon Why Dave avoids GLP-1 drugs despite believing low doses carry real longevity benefits How cyclical ketosis, fasting windows, and a carnivore-leaning diet support sustainable long-term metabolism Why surrender, not control, was the hardest and most expensive lesson of Dave's career Gabby's advice for raising confident daughters and why she believes success is less about deserving it and more about how you steward it Thank you to our sponsors! - Beyond Wonderland Conference | Oct 13 - 14, 2026.
