#219 When Fame Enters the Courtroom with James Porfido

    A Voice and Beyond

What happens when a legal case becomes global entertainment? When a celebrity is accused of serious wrongdoing, the public rarely waits for a courtroom verdict before forming an opinion. News headlines, documentaries, podcasts, social media commentary and viral clips can shape a narrative long before all the available evidence has been examined. In this compelling episode of A Voice and Beyond, I speak with attorney and legal commentator James Porfido about the complex relationship between celebrity, media influence, public opinion and the justice system.Drawing on high-profile cases involving figures such as Michael Jackson and Sean "Diddy" Combs, James explores what happens when allegations are tried simultaneously in a courtroom and in the court of public opinion. Our conversation is not about declaring guilt or innocence. Instead, it examines how we consume stories about public figures, how easily allegation can be confused with proof and why critical thinking is essential when legal proceedings become part of popular culture. In this episode, we discuss:Why public opinion is not the same as a legal verdictThe difference between an allegation, evidence and proofHow celebrity status can influence the way legal cases are reportedMichael Jackson's legal history and the continuing debate surrounding his legacyThe complexity around cases involving Sean "Diddy" Combs and Jeffrey EpsteinWhether celebrity defendants can receive a genuinely fair trialHow confirmation bias affects the information we accept or rejectWhy due process matters, even when public emotions are intenseThe danger of confusing online popularity with credibilityHow audiences can become more responsible consumers of legal contentThis episode is ultimately a conversation about media literacy, justice and personal responsibility. It is a reminder that critical thinking does not mean dismissing allegations or refusing to believe those who come forward. It means holding space for seriousness and compassion while also respecting evidence, due process and the presumption of innocence.Find James Here:justicewithporfido.com/facebook.com/porfidolawinstagram.com/jamesporfido/linkedin.com/in/james-m-porfido-b007461a1/Book:Unequal Justice: The Search for Truth to Balance the Scalesxlibris.com/en/bookstore/bookdetails/861729-unequal-justiceFind Marisa online:Website: https://drmarisaleenaismith.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drmarisaleenaismith/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drmarisaleenaismith/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/marisa.lee.12YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@avoiceandbeyond3519/videosResources:MLN Coaching Program: https://drmarisaleenaismith.com/mentoring/Schedule a Free Clarity Call: https://calendly.com/info-56015/discovery Gratitude Journal: https://drmarisaleenaismith.com/product/in-gratitude-my-daily-self-journal/Download your eBook: Thriving in a Creative Industry: https://drmarisaleenaismith.com/product/ebook-thriving-in-a-creative-industry-dr-marisa-lee-naismith/Like this episode? Amy Shark doesn't know how ended up here. Before the ARIA Awards, the platinum records and sold-out tours, there were years of cover gigs, day jobs, rejected demos and wondering whether it was finally time to give up. She came within days of walking away from music altogether before one song, Adore, changed everything. In this episode of No Filter, Amy joins Kate Langbroek for a deeply personal conversation about the fifteen years it took to become an 'overnight success', why she believes the universe had other plans for her, and what fame actually looks like once you've achieved everything you thought you wanted. She talks about growing up on the Gold Coast with young parents, the grandmother who believed in her before anyone else did, falling in love with her husband and manager Shane, navigating marriage inside the music industry, and the burnout that left her feeling as though she had nothing left to give. Amy also reflects on finding joy in songwriting again, making her fourth album Soft Pop, and why she's finally learnt that success isn't about constantly chasing the next milestone. This is a conversation about perseverance, creativity, love, grief and what happens when the dream you've spent your whole life chasing finally comes true. Amy Shark's new album Soft Pop is out now. Oggi egli lancia un invito all’uomo: «O voi tutti assetati, venite all’acqua».

Twin City's Destiny Was Already WrittenPol's Armenian coffee reading takes center stage as we sit down with the incredibly talented twins of Twin City for one of the most emotional and surprisingly accurate coffee readings we've ever experienced. What begins as a fun tradition quickly turns into a deeply personal conversation when the coffee cup immediately reveals an unexpected "third person," leading us on a hilarious path of trying to figure out exactly who Pol' was seeing in the cup. As the reading unfolds, Pol uncovers something much deeper about Anjali's life. He sees someone who quietly carries the weight of everyone else's happiness while sacrificing pieces of her own. His message is clear: stop living for everyone else and start living authentically. The twins also open up about their creative journey, their upcoming debut album Fantasy Love, and the exciting direction of the music they're already creating afterward. Pol predicts their NEXT album has the potential to become their biggest breakthrough because it reflects empowerment and finding their own voices. We also discuss collaboration, songwriting, Bella Thorne's first awards dress designed by Pol, and why constructive criticism creates better art. The reading ends with the discovery of a giant letter "V" in the coffee cup, which Pol believes represents an important future opportunity they should embrace. The twins leave saying they feel completely "undressed" after revealing so much about themselves and admitting the reading was "scarily accurate." Between laughter, heartfelt advice and uncanny predictions, this episode proves why our Armenian Coffee Reading continues to amaze guests and listeners alike. A riveting new look at the parallel lives of Charles Manson and Roman Polanski reveals connections beyond the notorious Tate-LaBianca murders.Since the horrific murder of Sharon Tate in 1969, the names Charles Manson and Roman Polanski have been brutally linked. But new analysis of the parallel and intertwining stories of these two men reveals a connection that preceded that fateful day.Manson and Polanski shared remarkably similar, and similarly awful, childhoods. In their early years they both developed a hatred of the establishment and of authority—Manson, from being abused by relatives, school staff, and jailors, and Polanski from living under the Nazi regime and then Polish Communists in the 1950s.Manson was released from prison and promptly went to the wildest place in North America (San Francisco's Haight Ashbury) at around the same time as Polanski got out of communist Poland and headed for the wildest place in Europe (swinging London). Both men went overboard with the new freedom of the era. Their paths crossed in Hollywood in the late 1960s, where Polanski had wild success, Manson utter failure. Then on August 8, 1969, Manson orchestrated the murder of Polanski's wife, actress Sharon Tate, and her unborn son.Combining international celebrity biography, analysis of a high-profile murder, and in-depth consideration of the lasting legacy of the crime in Polanski's directorial work,Blood and Fame is a riveting investigation that will appeal to both film lovers and true crime readers alike.BLOOD AND FAME: The Intersecting Lives of Roman Polanski and Charles Manson—Peter Rowe.

Welcome back to UNDRESSED: THE INTERVIEW as we continue our unforgettable conversation with Valley Persian Style star Sky Askari. In Part 2, we go far beyond the headlines and dive into marriage, reality television, family, fame, and the unexpected challenges that come with opening your life to millions of viewers. From separate bedrooms and Cartier proposals to cast feuds and behind-the-scenes drama, Sky holds nothing back. We kick things off by addressing one of the biggest topics from Valley Persian Style: Sky and her husband's unconventional sleeping arrangement. Sky reveals that years of her husband's increasingly unbearable snoring led her to retreat to her own bedroom, joking that she prefers to think of herself as royalty with separate chambers. Of course, we compare notes on our own marriage, laughing about arguments, guest rooms, fireplaces, and why Patrik can never seem to escape Pol—even when he tries. The conversation quickly turns romantic as we revisit one of the most important moments of our lives: Pol's unforgettable proposal to Patrik. What began as plans for a private-jet engagement to Hawaii turned into something even more extravagant when production couldn't secure the permits in time. Refusing to stage a fake television moment, Pol made a phone call that resulted in one of Beverly Hills' most iconic streets shutting down. We relive the incredible story of closing Rodeo Drive, gathering dozens of friends at Cartier, and orchestrating a surprise proposal complete with diamonds, luxury shopping, Louis Vuitton bags, and SnowWhite90210 in attendance. As we walk through the emotional details, we share the hilariously unfiltered hot-mic moment when Patrik, stunned by the size of the ring, leaned down and asked Pol if he had sold one of the houses to pay for it. Beyond the glamour and extravagance, the conversation becomes a touching reflection on love, commitment, and the once-in-a-lifetime moments that define a relationship. From there, Sky opens up about how she found herself cast on Valley Persian Style. Contrary to what many viewers assumed, she reveals that she barely knew most of the cast members before filming and was introduced to the production team through her friendship with Tanin. Sky explains that while she had briefly crossed paths with Golnesa “GG” Gharachedaghi years earlier, she had no real friendships with Shahs of Sunset veterans like Mercedes “MJ” Javid, Reza Farahan, Tommy Feight, or Adam Neely before stepping into the spotlight. As first-time reality stars ourselves, we ask Sky what it was like to suddenly expose her private life to cameras. She admits that despite being an open person, she has always fiercely protected her family, her children, and her inner circle. Sky shares that appearing on television forced her to confront emotions and insecurities she had spent years avoiding, ultimately teaching her lessons she hopes to pass on to her children. The conversation becomes even more candid as we discuss the darker side of reality television. Sky reflects on the toxicity of season one and admits that what began as entertainment eventually became deeply personal. She reveals that she struggled with how quickly friendships unraveled, how cast members continued discussing her on podcasts and in interviews, and how painful it was to feel targeted by people she once trusted. Despite everything, Sky insists that she has no regrets because the experience forced her to grow and better understand herself. We also explore the unique pressures of ensemble reality television and whether drama is organic or strategically amplified for the cameras. Sky explains that while she believes emotions are real, conflicts often become magnified once filming begins. She opens up about the tension between authenticity and performance and admits that there were moments she refused to recreate scenes because the emotions behind them were simply too raw. As parents and public figures, we dive into the importance of protecting children from fame and preserving some sense of normalcy. Sky explains why she intentionally limits her children's involvement on the show and how carefully she navigates balancing public life with private life. Of course, no conversation would be complete without addressing one of the season's most controversial moments: the infamous dog-oil incident. Sky finally tells her side of the story, insisting that rubbing skincare oil onto her beloved dogs was never intended as an insult but as a compliment to the product itself. She reveals that producers left out crucial details from the scene, including her questions about preservatives, ingredients, and shelf life—questions she believes would have completely changed viewers' perception of the situation. Sky also reveals that many of her favorite moments never made the final cut, including a visit to Warner Bros. with producer Ali Afshar to discuss incorporating pieces from her jewelry collection into future film projects. Moments like those, she says, better reflect who she truly is beyond the drama audiences see on television. As our conversation comes to a close, Sky looks ahead to season two with a completely different perspective. While she admits that she initially considered walking away, she ultimately chose to return stronger, wiser, and more confident. This time, she says, she is no longer interested in over-explaining herself or proving anything to anyone. Instead, she plans to stand her ground, represent her family and culture proudly, and let her actions speak for themselves. From separate bedrooms and spectacular proposals to reality-TV betrayals, family values, luxury lifestyles, and Hollywood politics, Part 2 of our conversation with Sky Askari proves that there is always far more happening behind the scenes than viewers ever imagine. Jason Whitlock breaks down what the Lionel Messi-Lamine Yamal World Cup moment reveals about legacy, mentorship, and the scarcity mindset eating black American culture from the inside — and why Tom Brady's Logan Paul stunt falls well below the Jordan standard. Lamine Yamal — the baby Lionel Messi bathed in a 2007 charity calendar — beat Messi at the World Cup final, leading Spain past Argentina 1-0. Messi blessed his successor publicly, competed to beat him, lost gracefully, and walked away bigger than the trophy. That's the Jordan standard: You build what comes after you, even when it costs you the crown. Michael Jordan never gave LeBron James that grace. And Tom Brady?
