In an era when most Americans have put so much of their lives online, it's easy to be complacent about online privacy. We've been told that as long as we have nothing to hide, we have nothing to fear. But in fact, an increasingly powerful surveillance state is a major threat to individual liberty and to the country as a whole. Matt Kibbe sits down with Naomi Brockwell, founder and president of the Ludlow Institute, to talk about why privacy still matters and to outline several ways that ordinary people can easily safeguard their digital data. This is important, because once the government knows everything about you, it can use that information to silence criticism and stifle dissent. Even those who approve of the current administration have to imagine that at some point, someone else is going to be in power, someone who might want to crack down on all the freedoms we hold dear. Without privacy, it becomes almost impossible to push back against oppressive regimes.

Topics range from Hollywood's output to fundamental Constitutional issues like the separation of church and state. The intelligence world is evolving rapidly. Former CIA officer Andrew Bustamante explains Cold War tech, Ukraine strategy, and global conflicts. [Pt. 1/2]Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1220What We Discuss with Andrew Bustamante:Number stations are still active intelligence tools. These mysterious shortwave radio broadcasts transmitting sequences of numbers remain a viable covert communication method. Using one-time pad encryption, they allow intelligence services to send untraceable messages to operatives worldwide. The receiver is nearly impossible to identify since anyone with a cheap shortwave radio could be listening, making this Cold War technology still relevant in the digital age.World War III may already be underway. According to Andrew, there are currently 161 active conflict zones globally, most involving multiple countries supporting different sides through proxy warfare. This represents a fundamentally different kind of world war — not the massive conventional battles of WWII, but an interconnected web of conflicts where nations profit economically from supporting wars without direct engagement.Russia is winning in Ukraine. Despite Western support, Russia continues to control 17-18% of Ukrainian territory and maintains consistent progress. Putin's long-term messaging strategy has been remarkably effective, and with decreasing US support, Ukraine faces an increasingly difficult position. The conflict may ultimately result in a divided nation, with reconstruction contracts becoming the real prize for both Western and Russian interests.Leaving the CIA is designed to be nearly impossible. The Agency provides zero transition assistance and maintains operatives in "leave without pay" status rather than terminating them, making it easy to return but extremely difficult to move forward. Covert officers face resume gaps they cannot explain, fake work histories that don't check out, and a cover rollback process that can take years — all designed to make former officers fail and return.International experience creates unique opportunities and safety nets. Whether it's obtaining dual citizenship for your children, understanding how to navigate corrupt systems (like ducking into upscale hotels owned by powerful people when police hassle you), or recognizing that Americans abroad often receive preferential treatment, global exposure provides tangible advantages. Part two will explore more about modern espionage, global conflict, and what it means for the rest of us.And much more...And if you're still game to support us, please leave a review here — even one sentence helps! In this special 100th episode, Tom and co-host Drew dive deep into today's most pressing issues—from the chaos of government shutdowns and the relentless battle over healthcare, to the power of propaganda in mainstream media and the economic forces shaping our society. They break down the realities behind headline-grabbing policies, exposing how both sides of the political spectrum spin the narrative and why it's critical to do your own research before forming opinions. You'll hear Tom's unfiltered take on the dangers of “revolutionary empathy,” inspired by Eric Weinstein's insights, and how shifts in empathy and radical polarization are fueling a climate ripe for violence and unrest. The conversation also explores the harsh truths of wealth inequality, the illusion of economic progress, and why the stock market's highs aren't translating to a better life for most Americans. Drew brings in sharp counterpoints and timely clips—touching on everything from mass media censorship to the controversial culture wars playing out in children's entertainment and on social platforms. Plus, there's a candid look at the escalation of global conflicts, particularly in Ukraine, and how warfare is evolving in ways that stretch far beyond the battlefield. Through it all, Tom emphasizes the importance of personal empowerment: how individuals can still win—economically and mentally—despite a society seemingly stacked against them. Buckle up for an intense, eye-opening, and occasionally hilarious episode packed with actionable advice, hard truths, and a call to cut through the noise in pursuit of real understanding. America saw a significant reverse-migration in the 1800s and 1900s, with 20–50% of Italian immigrants returning to Italy as ritornati and tens of thousands of Americans, including ideologues and workers, moving to Germany, Italy, and the USSR in the 1930s seeking political or economic opportunities. Some of these American expatriates were drawn to revolutionary movements in Europe and Asia, blending idealism with political activism Today’s guest is David Mayers, author of Seekers and Partisans: Americans Abroad in the Crisis Years, 1935–1941. We discuss alienated Americans who went abroad during the interwar years in search of a new home and/or to further deeply personal causes. They include John Robinson, a black aviator who in 1935 led the Ethiopian air force against the Italian invasion; Agnes Smedley, who joined the Chinese communists during the Sino-Japanese war; Helen Keller, an advocate of the seeing- and hearing-impaired; Ezra Pound, a lauded poet who championed Mussolini; and Anna Louise Strong, drawn to Stalin's USSR.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today's Headlines: President Trump marked the second anniversary of Hamas' October 7th attack by telling reporters he thinks there's a “really good chance” Israel and Hamas will finalize their ceasefire deal “within days.” Illinois and the city of Chicago sued to block Trump's move to federalize the National Guard, but a judge has so far declined to stop him, giving the administration until tomorrow night to respond. That's in contrast with a Trump-appointed judge in Oregon who blocked similar deployments in Portland, calling Trump's rationale “untethered from reality.” Stephen Miller responded by accusing the court of a “left-wing legal insurrection.” Meanwhile, ICE is reportedly gearing up to expand its surveillance powers — buying tools to track people via phone data and social media to help target deportations. And the administration plans to slash refugee admissions from 125,000 to just 7,500 this year, prioritizing (checks notes) white South Africans for resettlement. The White House is also cooking up a rule that would make it harder for older Americans to qualify for Social Security disability benefits by raising the age threshold from 50 to 60 — a move that could cut off payments for hundreds of thousands of people. And in Trump's ongoing campaign against his perceived enemies, the FBI is reportedly planning a “showy” arrest of former director James Comey — complete with tactical gear and cameras — after suspending an agent who refused to take part. Meanwhile, a top prosecutor in Virginia is reportedly resisting pressure to charge New York AG Letitia James with mortgage fraud, because, in her words, there's “no probable cause.” In other news, the Supreme Court rejected Ghislaine Maxwell's appeal of her sex trafficking conviction so back to the country club prison it is. Finally, a major Cambridge study found autism likely represents multiple distinct conditions, not one single disorder. From his brief but explosive tenure inside the Trump White House in 2017 to his career on Wall Street and success as co-host of ‘The Rest Is Politics US' podcast, Scaramucci has never been one to hold back — sometimes at great personal cost. In conversation with Emily Maitlis he explored the biggest questions facing America and the world today.  Is Trump an existential threat to democracy or can the US Constitution withstand his authoritarian impulses? Does his ‘America First' approach make war more or less likely? Does Vladimir Putin hold leverage over Trump, or is his detachment from Europe's troubles with Russia a calculated move to prioritise the greater threat from China? And are his opponents once again underestimating him — could the 77 million Americans who re-elected him be right that he will, in the end, make America great again? Scaramucci, with his trademark wit and unfiltered honesty, offered a rare insider's perspective on the chaos and consequences of the Trump era. --- If you'd like to become a Member and get access to all our full ad free conversations, plus all of our Members-only content, just visit intelligencesquared.com/membership to find out more. Then, on Monday, Sept. 29, exactly one week after going public, Osadebe and Heenan were fired in what the Federal Unionist Network describes as “a stunning act of illegal retaliation.” In this urgent followup interview, we speak once again with Osadebe and Heenan about the conditions of their firing, and what this attack on whistleblowers means for the future of government transparency and the future of HUD itself. Guests: Paul Osadebe is a shop steward for the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) – Local 476, a member of the Federal Unionists Network, and, until recently, an attorney working in the federal government. When “follow the science” became a political slogan, when riots were called “mostly peaceful,” and when hypocrisy became too blatant to ignore, millions of Americans finally saw through the façade. Now, the cultural backlash is here. From comedians reclaiming free speech to parents standing up in schools, the silent majority has become un-silent — and the woke scolds are losing their grip. The culture they thought they owned is turning on them. This isn't just about mocking the absurdity. It's about rebuilding. Because the death of the woke scolds isn't the end — it's the beginning of something better: a culture rooted in truth, courage, and moral confidence. Today is Tuesday, October 7th and Happy Birthday to John Mellencamp I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia Fox Theatre continues Coca-Cola Film Series with screening of 'The Phantom of the Opera' Iconic Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli reflects on 30 years of music ahead of Gwinnett concert Gwinnett honors Jimmy Carter's life on his 101st birthday All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! Break 1: Kia MOG STORY 1: Fox Theatre continues Coca-Cola Film Series with screening of 'The Phantom of the Opera' The Fox Theatre is bringing a little magic—and a lot of nostalgia—to its Coca-Cola Film Series with a special screening of the 1925 silent classic The Phantom of the Opera on Oct. 29. Here’s the twist: the film will be accompanied live by organist Ken Double on the Mighty Mo, the Fox’s legendary 1929 Möller pipe organ. If you’ve never heard it, you’re in for a treat—it’s massive, intricate, and honestly, a masterpiece in itself. But that’s not all. Expect Phantom-inspired photo ops, a peek into the Fox’s own history with the film, and, for Marquee Club guests, custom watercolor portraits by Lexi Brite’s team. Exclusive, artsy, and unforgettable. Tickets? Head to foxtheatre.org. STORY 2: Iconic Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli reflects on 30 years of music ahead of Gwinnett concert For over three decades, Andrea Bocelli has been enchanting audiences worldwide with his voice—one that feels like it was made to stir souls. At 67, the legendary tenor from Italy, has sold over 90 million albums, but it’s his live performances that truly leave people breathless. On Saturday, Oct. 11, Bocelli will bring his magic to Gas South Arena in Duluth, performing a mix of operatic arias, crossover hits, and selections from his album A Family Christmas. With Maestro Steven Mercurio conducting and surprises promised, it’s a night not to miss. STORY 3: Gwinnett honors Jimmy Carter's life on his 101st birthday Even though former President Jimmy Carter wasn’t there in person last Wednesday, Tiffany Parks felt his presence everywhere. As volunteers hammered and sawed away at what will soon be her new home in Lilburn, she couldn’t help but think of the man who championed Habitat for Humanity for decades. “This is special—for him, his family, his legacy,” Parks said. Wednesday would’ve been Carter’s 101st birthday, and Gwinnett County honored him in every way imaginable: a Habitat build, a mural at Best Friend Park, blue lights on Jimmy Carter Boulevard, and heartfelt tributes. “He showed the world that everyone deserves a home,” said Habitat’s Eric Miller. STORY 5: EXPLORING GWINNETT'S HISTORY: Your Parcel ID and the 1820 Land Lottery Ever wonder where your property’s parcel ID comes from? Turns out, it’s not random—it’s rooted in history, all the way back to Georgia’s 1820 Land Lottery. Back then, the state divided up land taken from Native Americans through treaties and forced removal, creating opportunities for white settlers to claim plots. Gwinnett County, established in 1818, was part of this process. Surveyors carved the county into districts and 250-acre lots. The first digit of your parcel ID? That’s your lottery district. The next three? Your original land lot. The last three? Your slice of that lot today. Curious who won your land? Visit the Gwinnett Historical Society in Lawrenceville! We’ll be right back. Break: LILBURN DAZE STORY 6: The Lights Fest coming to Lanier Islands Resort On Oct. 25, the night sky over Lake Lanier will come alive with thousands of glowing lanterns as The Lights Fest makes its Atlanta-area debut at Lanier Islands Resort. Picture it: a lakeside evening filled with music, dancing, and the quiet magic of lanterns drifting into the dark. Hosted at PineIsle, the event invites people to release biodegradable lanterns—simple rice paper, bamboo, and string—symbolizing hope, remembrance, or just letting go. Some come to honor loved ones, others to dream, and some just to soak in the beauty. A portion of proceeds supports the Georgia Mountain Food Bank. Want to stay the night? Lanier Islands is offering a special package with tickets and accommodations. Details at lanierislands.com. STORY 7: Georgia Tech Switching to Under Armour from Adidas for Uniforms, Apparel Big news for Georgia Tech fans: starting July 1, 2026, Under Armour will officially take over as the Yellow Jackets’ provider for uniforms, apparel, footwear, and accessories. Yep, the same brand outfitting Notre Dame, Maryland, and Wisconsin is coming to Atlanta. This partnership isn’t just about gear—it’s about innovation. Under Armour’s investment includes NIL opportunities for student-athletes and even hands-on roles in product design. Fans? Expect more Tech merch hitting stores soon. Fun fact: Georgia Tech was Under Armour’s first collegiate client back in 1996. Now, nearly 30 years later, they’re reuniting. Full-circle moment, right? Stay tuned for uniform reveals! We’ll have closing comments after this. Break 4: Ingles Markets Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today’s Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. "At long last, Mr. President.”—Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill This is the story of the second year of WWII and the United States' response.  As the war enters its second full year, things are looking dire for Britain: Germany has forced France into submission, the Blitz is in full swing, and the cash-strapped nation is running out of money to pay for US aid. Lend-Lease, or H.R. 1776, is the proposed solution; it'll allow Franklin to transfer munitions to “any country whose defense the President deems vital to the defense of the US.” But there is stiff opposition. Is the language too dictatorial? Does it make entering the war unavoidable? As Americans discuss the bill across the country, famed aviator Charles “Lucky Lindy” Lindbergh will argue against it, while recently defeated 1940 presidential candidate Wendell Willkie will argue for it. Nor are they the only ones disagreeing: workers are striking in record numbers. Building an “arsenal of democracy” means labor and business will have to settle their differences. Meanwhile, as FDR and Winston Churchill secretly meet for the first time in the frigid climes of the northern Atlantic, the Army and Navy are drilling down to brass tacks—what would it really mean if America enters the war? How many men would the nation need in uniform? Could American production cope with wartime demands? Pragmatic American leaders are preparing and planning just in case, mostly with their eyes on Germany … but increasingly on Japan. Relations are eroding swiftly. Perhaps Uncle Sam's greatest immediate threat isn't across the Atlantic but the Pacific … ____ Connect with us on HTDSpodcast.com and go deep into episode bibliographies and book recommendations join discussions in our Facebook community get news and discounts from The HTDS Gazette  come see a live show get HTDS merch or become an HTDS premium member for bonus episodes and other perks.
