    Everything Everywhere Daily History Podcast

In 1428, a young girl from the village of Domrémy, France, audaciously set out to meet the heir apparent to the French throne, the Dauphin, and told him what he had to do to defeat the English occupying her country.  She claimed that she was told what to do by God.  Against all odds, the Dauphin took her advice, and it worked. After a series of military victories, the Dauphin was crowned king, and the young girl went on to become one of the greatest heroes in French history.  Learn more about Joan of Arc, her incredible story, and how it changed French history on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily. It's a short treatment – nine weeks – and an even shorter read – fifteen pages – and so the story of this English governess haunted by phantom smells often goes neglected. But as Abby and Patrick explain, her case marks a key shift in Freud's clinical practice (away from hypnosis) and a succinct demonstration of his core therapeutic techniques. Lucy R's case also suggests something profound about the interlocking relationships between memories and repression, and between the history of symptoms and the course of treatment. Plus: noses, a rare novel about Lucy's nose, and tantalizing connections to Henry James's novella The Turn of the Screw about the haunting (or madness) of an English governess.Have you noticed that Freud is back? Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl is the stirring autobiography of Harriet Jacobs, a mother and fugitive, detailing her harrowing escape from enslavement, seven years hiding in an attic crawl space, and the racism she faced in freedom. Forgotten for decades after its original, 19th century publication, Jacobs' story was so harrowing and so brave it was thought to be fiction. Only through the research of historian Jean Fagan Yellin in the 1980s was it proven, once and for all, to be a brilliant and compelling work of nonfiction. Incidents is routinely cited by historians and fiction writers alike as one of the most influential texts of our time and our history. In this latest edition published by W.W. Norton (2025), Jacobs' characters come alive for a new generation of readers, and re-readers, this time contextualized with a new introduction and explanatory notes by Evie Shockley. They discuss the transition challenges from middle school to high school, how AI serves as a supportive tool for teachers, and the value of personalized learning approaches. Stephanie shares her firsthand experiences using AI to boost student engagement and improve learning outcomes, while addressing the limitations of standardized teaching methods. The conversation concludes with actionable advice for educators on effectively implementing AI in both their classrooms and daily routines. Educators should prioritize teaching appropriate AI usage to students. Standardized education frameworks can successfully coexist with individualized teaching approaches. AI tools reduce teacher workload and minimize decision fatigue. Teachers should share their AI success stories to promote wider adoption. Effective AI implementation enhances both student engagement and learning outcomes. Educators benefit from experimenting with AI in their personal lives before classroom implementation. So why do we still believe we can innovate our way out of collapse? In this sobering and deeply philosophical conversation, Roy Scranton—former soldier, literary scholar, and author of Impasse: Climate Change and the Limits of Progress—joins Will to explore why our faith in progress may be our greatest liability. Drawing from his experience in Iraq and his study of civilizational decline, Scranton dismantles the optimistic narratives that shape American culture, from techno-utopianism to climate heroism. They discuss everything from American exceptionalism and carbon optimism to moral psychology, Jonathan Haidt's “elephant and rider,” and the ethical case for pessimism. Scranton argues that rather than trying to save the world, we should focus on how to live meaningfully in a collapsing one—with compassion, honesty, and courage.Whether you're a climate realist, a techno-optimist, or just anxious about the future, this episode will stretch your mind.

He grew up in Barbados and moved to the United States of America as a young adult. Neville Goddard was perhaps the last century's most intellectually substantive and charismatic purveyor of the philosophy generally called New Thought. He wrote more than ten books under the solitary pen name Neville, and was a popular speaker on metaphysical themes from the late 1930s until his death in 1972.Possessed of a self-educated and uncommonly sharp intellect, Neville espoused a spiritual vision that was bold and total: Everything you see and experience, including other people, is the result of your own thoughts and emotional states. Each of us dreams into existence an infinitude of realities and outcomes. When you realize this, Neville taught, you will discover yourself to be a slumbering branch of the Creator clothed in human form, and at the helm of limitless possibilities.Neville's thought system influenced a wide range of spiritual thinkers and writers, from bestselling author Dr. Joseph Murphy to Rhonda Byrne and Wayne Dyer.He has inspired and continues to inspire millions of readers around the world.* * *SOCIALS:• Neville Goddard Newsletter• Neville Goddard Telegram• Neville Goddard Instagram• Neville Goddard Threads• Neville Goddard Twitter• Neville Goddard YouTube* * *ABOUT THE COURSEUnlock God Mode is a transformative 30-day course designed to accelerate your journey towards greater wealth, love, and success through a deeper understanding and manipulation of your reality.  Comprising of 30 audio lessons, this course unfolds as a self-paced, introspective expedition into reality creation, aiding you in elevating your consciousness to what's referred to as the God Mode. Throughout this journey, practical tools will be provided daily to help enrich your life with more love, money, and success by altering your mental models and perceptions. This course combines theory and hands-on experience to create a unique deep dive into manifestation, consciousness, and reality creation. Patrick answers pressing questions from listeners, ranging from whether Judas’ betrayal had to happen for Christ’s crucifixion to practical struggles like being distracted by phones at Mass or how to approach a parent remarried outside the Church. He mixes clear Church teaching with plainspoken encouragement, reminding callers about God’s timeless perspective, the meaning behind Catholic discipline, and how to find spiritual focus even amid modern distractions. Forgiveness, confession, feast days, and the placement of statues at church come up, each explored with real-life examples and a dash of humor. Alex - Was Judas betrayal required for the fulfillment of the prophecies? (00:49) Elizabeth - I sometimes go to a Spanish mass, and don't understand anything. I don't even know if it's a valid mass for me. Is it still valid? (06:37) Eva - Some churches give out 'The Word Among Us” for Mass readings or the USCCB Website and she could follow it in English. (15:13) Elena (email) – Is it okay to ask for an anointment of the sick just in case something happened on my flight? (18:49) Adam (email) - Can we eat meat today on the Feast of the Assumption of Mary? (23:34) Juan - What does he think about Churches that, instead of having the crucifix in the center behind the altar, they have an image or statue of Mary? Why not Jesus on the side? (27:39) Christina - Do Christians forgive but not forget? (33:15) Mary - Could you explain how are we supposed to talk to our parents who are taking the Eucharist even though they are married outside the Church? Steven Acroyd is a jealous man—jealous, and prone to sudden, violent anger. He works in a remote country house under the quiet rule of an elderly master, brooding, watching, waiting. One night, he listens at a window and hears something about his fiancée that pushes him too far. He does something terrible, then tries to get away with it. Some ghosts come bearing messages, but this one brings a stranger message than most. Publication Details The Victim was first published in Uncanny Stories by May Sinclair in 1923. The collection reflects Sinclair's deep interest in spiritualism and the metaphysics of consciousness. Author Biography May Sinclair (1863–1946) was a British novelist, philosopher and suffragist, best known today for pioneering stream-of-consciousness technique and for her fusion of idealist metaphysics with modernist fiction. She was one of the first critics to praise T. S. Eliot and to write seriously about Freud and mystical experience in English literature. ⭐ Join my Patreon ⭐ https://patreon.com/barcud Go here for a library of ad-free stories, a monthly members only story and early access to the regular stories I put out.  You can choose to have ghost stories only, or detective stories or classic literature, or all of them for either $5 or $10 a month.  Many hundreds of hours of stories. Since the early 2000s, one type of shop has quietly become a regular feature on British high streets: the Polski sklep – or Polish shop.Known for their smoked sausages, sour pickles, and wide selection of herbal teas, these shops offer more than just food. With Polish people now the largest non-British nationality in the UK, and Polish the next most spoken language after English and Welsh, they also reflect a broader story of migration and community. Jaega Wise explores what makes these stores worth visiting for everyone, not just Poles, and how they're adapting to the challenges facing the high street. To find out more, Jaega visits Peterborough – a city she once lived in and remembers for its vibrant Polish community. There, she explores the busy Europol supermarket and a popular home-style restaurant, Pierogarnia. In Walthamstow, she meets cultural historian and second-generation Pole Dr Kasia Tomasiewicz, who explains the background behind the herbal teas and how they connect her to her ancestors. And back in Hackney, Jaega makes pierogi at home with food writer Zuza Zak, using a mix of Polish and British ingredients. She also hears from Dr Kathy Burrell, Professor of Migration Geographies at the University of Liverpool. Producer: Eliza Lomas

The Theological Metaphors of Marx (Duke UP, 2024) by Enrique Dussel – A Conversation with Camilo Pérez-Bustillo and Eduardo Mendieta In The Theological Metaphors of Marx, Enrique Dussel provides a groundbreaking combination of Marxology, theology, and ethical theory. Dussel shows that Marx unveils the theology of capitalism in his critique of commodity fetishization. Capitalism constitutes an idolatry of the commodity that undergirds the capitalist expropriation of labor. Dussel examines Marx's early writings on religion and fetishism and proceeds through what Dussel refers to as the four major drafts of Capital, ultimately situating Marx's philosophical, economic, ethical, and historical insights in relation to the theological problems of his time. Dussel notes a shift in Marx's underlying theological schema from a political critique of the state to an economic critique of the commodity fetish as the Devil, or anti-God, of modernity. Marx's thought, impact, and influence cannot be fully understood without Dussel's historic reinterpretation of the theological origins and implications of Marx's critiques of political economy and politics. Enrique Dussel (1934–2023) was Emeritus Professor, Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana-Iztapalapa, and the author of many books, including Twenty Theses on Politics and Ethics of Liberation: In the Age of Globalization and Exclusion, both also published by Duke University Press.Camilo Pérez-Bustillo is coauthor of Human Rights, Hegemony, and Utopia in Latin America.Eduardo Mendieta is Professor of Philosophy and Latina/o Studies at Pennsylvania State University. Hello Colorado Rapids fans. This weekend the club will be retiring Marcelo Balboa's #17 jersey. It's just the fifth jersey number retirement in MLS history and the second one for Colorado (Pablo Mastroeni's #25 was retired July 4, 2021). Shortly after the end of the 2022 MLS season, we interviewed Celo. This was after the Altitude TV contract had expired. MLS was in the middle of setting up MLS Season Pass on Apple TV. Teams were saying goodbye to their local broadcast partners. Celo was in limbo. He was happy and at peace, amid the uncertainty. Here's that interview again. We discuss him growing up in Southern California and transitioning from college soccer to the fledgling semi-professional game in America. The Colorado Foxes come up. We talk bicycle kicks, his rehab to make the USMNT for the 1994 World Cup, and that wild Copa America. He gets real about his struggles academically, with injuries, and in his personal life. He's got some good stories about his time at Club Leon (Marcelo Balboa Clasico Champions, you'll never sing that!). Then we discuss his legendary Colorado Rapids moments: That phone call with Phil Anschutz, the first goal in Rapids history, the 1997 MLS Cup Final, the 1999 U.S. Open Cup Final, getting traded to the MetroStars, and more. We touch on what he's done since retiring, working with the Rapids Academy, doing soccer media in English y Espanol, y mas! Congratulations Celo. Thank you for everything. Legend, now and always.

Six Al Jazeera journalists have been killed in targeted strikes by Israel recently and much of the world is up in arms. On Thursday, television host Piers Morgan invited two journalists to discuss the issues and their very different takes. Jotam Confino is based in Israel and writes extensively for international media, primarily in Europe and the U.K. His commentary on this issue on social media and elsewhere has attracted significant attention and among those who took note is Piers Morgan. He invited Confino onto Uncensored last Thursday. Morgan hosts what is probably the most watched English language program dealing with current events. Confino is furious that these six journalists who worked for Al-Jazeera are being lionized as truth warriors, when they are nothing more than craven propaganda shills, in his view. Presenting a very different perspective is Jamal Elshayyal, a long-time Al-Jazeera newsman. Based on his defense of Al Jazeera editorial conduct as well as the work of his colleagues, Confino questions why he even considers himself a journalist. And Confino came to this standoff prepared. He studied the social media posts of many Al-Jazeera journalists. Elshayyal relies more upon eyerolls and dismissive expressions.Did Israel kill journalists?
