Margo is joined by independent filmmaker and writer Courtney Daniels to discuss the joys and challenges of creating outside the Hollywood studio system. Courtney shares her journey from writing spec scripts as a receptionist at Warner Brothers to producing her own feature films, including What Other Couples Do. She opens up about the power of not waiting for validation, making films on a budget, and turning her latest screenplay, A Blind Date in NYC, into a short novel. Together, they explore the freedom of independent creativity and why success comes from taking action rather than waiting to be chosen. Margo and Courtney discuss: The freedom of independent filmmaking outside Hollywood Why waiting for validation hinders creativity How Courtney made her first feature film on a shoestring budget Tips for affordable filmmaking and getting started with minimal resources Turning a screenplay into a book: A Blind Date in NYC Overcoming fear and embracing the creative process Film festivals as stepping stones for indie filmmakers Building daily creative habits to stay inspired The importance of manufacturing surprise in storytelling Connect with Courtney: https://courtneydanielsfilms.com/ https://www.instagram.com/courtneydanielstoyou/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/courtney-daniels-9abb0864 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQFenMHq7I8 https://www.amazon.com/What-Other-Couples-Michael-Friedman/dp/B00QLZRLKK https://www.amazon.com/Its-Not-You-Courtney-Daniels/dp/B0CJJZ9VTG Connect with Margo: www.windowsillchats.com www.instagram.com/windowsillchats www.patreon.com/inthewindowsill https://www.yourtantaustudio.com/thefoundry

This is the kick-off episode introducing the new season of the AIGA Design Podcast with our new theme, DESIGN + PERFORMANCE. The theme is open for designers to interpret it in their own unique ways, bringing individual perspectives to the table. In this episode, we explore how we approach design considering the nuances of performance in creative fields. Host Lee-Sean Huang interviews independent filmmaker Gary Jaffe about his professional journey and creative process. They delve into multiple interpretations of "performance" and its tangible and intangible roles in filmmaking. They discuss the decisions a film director makes (and doesn't make), emphasizing the importance of trusting the team you work with. They highlight the need to create space for individuals to fully perform their roles, allowing the team's collective skills to shine. For Gary, much like in business, a film carries its own vision. Setting clear goals for how the movie should look is essential, but embracing the unexpected reality is also a vital part of the creative process. As designers, everything we experience serves as inspiration for our work. Ensuring a clear reference point from the beginning helps keep the project on track and aligned with everyone involved. Gary believes that the way he presents himself reflects his creative identity and aligns with the style of work he produces. What about you? How do you perform design? Finnish-Australian filmmaker Saara Lamberg has crafted a filmography which features genre-defying, boundary pushing films like 2017's Innuendo, 2022's Westermarck Effect, and the docu-fiction film The Lies We Tell Ourselves, which received screenings at Perth's Revelation International Film Festival and the Sydney Underground Film Festival. Recorded in late 2023, I had the privilege to talk to Djinn in a noisy cafe in Sim Lim Square, before he rushed off flying back to LA- hence the aggressive background noise cancelling-sorry. We owe Djinn and all those involved with the Movie, Perth- for pioneering Singapore indie films in 2004, when it was a lot more difficult to write, produce, direct and distribute a feature film. A great person to chat with. Lots to share. In this episode, we're diving deep into the world of Singaporean filmmaker Djinn Ong, best known for his film Perth. Djinn takes us on a journey through his unconventional path into filmmaking, starting with his work at the Economic Development Board (EDB) to his experiences in the Hong Kong film industry and eventually into directing. From casting actors off the street to balance the constraints of low-budget filmmaking, Djinn shares candid stories about working with actors like Sunny Pang, working with Producer Juan Foo, his passion for telling authentic Singaporean stories, and the challenges of bringing independent films to life. Join us as Djinn reflects on his creative process, the evolving landscape of local cinema, and his thoughts on the future of filmmaking in Singapore and beyond. Filmmakers possess the unique ability to immerse us in the lived experiences of others and in so doing, promote kindness, compassion and empathy. Directors Tracy Droz Tragos and Charles Mudede join us to share their newest projects. Tracy's film is called Plan C and it follows a network of courageous women who are working to ensure access to pregnancy terminating medications. Charles directed Thin Skin, a powerful and funny look into the life of musician/comedian Ahamefule Oluo who has never met but lives in the shadow of his Nigerian father.Charles Mudede is a writer, cultural critic and filmmaker whose film is inspired by Oluo's stage play which began as a segment on This American Life. It's the story of a young, bi-racial man in search of himself while grappling with divorce, children, identity, purpose and the heartbreak of displeasing an absent father.Tracy Droz Tragos is an accomplished and award winning documentarian whose film, Plan C documents the heroic work of the women who comprise a grassroots effort to safeguard access to the two-drug treatment known as a medial abortion. The drugs are prescribed legally through telemedicine visits, however access to information about their availability is muzzled. Tracy's hope is that her film will raise awareness. We also discuss the doctors on the frontline, the supportive husbands, the social media shutdowns and messaging workarounds:… a mobile billboard, subway ads and QR code stickers in college restrooms. We then get into legal intrigues like individual state policies, Shield Laws and the Supreme Court's squeeze between two masters… the religious right and big pharma.Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending Alexandra Pelosi's The Insurrectionist Next Door on Max and Stephen Spielberg's Life on Our Planet on Netflix.Path Points of InterestTracy Droz TragosPlan C Plan C TrailerPlan C on FacebookPlan C on InstagramPlan C on TwitterThe Turnaway StudyThin Skin Thin Skin Screening InformationThink Skin TrailerThin Skin on FacebookCharles Mudede on WikipediaThe Wedding Crasher - This American LifeThe Insurrectionist Next DoorPelosi in The HouseLife on Our Planet - Netflix
Welcome back to the Independent Filmmaker's Guide. In today's episode we dive right into one of the later challenges along the filmmaking journey - getting your film in front of your potential audience. How to actually break through with ratings and reviews in key places. The landscape is always changing and tomorrow it may be different. In the meantime, these particular algorithms on streaming platforms hold a lot of sway as to what movies actually get "shelf space" in their store. With this in mind, we here at IFG share the great news that our indie horror film HERD (Steven Pierce, James Allerdyce, Matt Mundy) is now released in the US and in an increasing number of other territories around the world. But in order to take advantage of all of this potential exposure we ask our listeners directly for their support. As we often do with podcasts but rarely seem to do in film, we talk about the importance of not just watching indie films but rating and reviewing them as well.In that, we also tackle the pivotal role of indie filmmakers in shaping a vibrant film industry, especially in light of recent strikes against the AMPTP. More so, we extend an invitation to you - yes, you, our treasured listeners - to join this journey. By watching, rating, and reviewing HERD, you're not simply showing support; you're helping independent films prove their worth in a sea of studio-backed blockbusters. And in this digital era, your ratings and reviews directly impact a film's positioning and success. And a special shoutout to the wonderful people of Poplar Bluff, Missouri - as well as Doniphan and Van Buren...your support and graciousness to our cast and crew are at the center of what made shooting this film possible.Links mentioned in the show:to follow the herd, and see more information about the movie, visit HERD.filmWatch/Stream on AppleTV or PrimeUK DVD reviewUK DVD purchaseRate/Review on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDbIFG is created by Framework Productions, produced and hosted by Steven Pierce, James Allerdyce, and Matt Mundy. The conversation also explores the role of local churches in supporting and holding missionaries accountable, the universal applicability of biblical methods in diverse cultural settings, and practical steps for strengthening the bond between congregations and missionaries. Whether you're a pastor, missionary, or layperson passionate about the Great Commission, this conversation offers invaluable insights and a dose of inspiration for fulfilling the call to make disciples of all nations.
Welcome back to the Independent Filmmaker's GuideThe navigation of film distribution can be one of the more difficult parts of the filmmaker's process. From understanding deal memos, aligning expectations, to simply getting something you've undoubtedly spent so much time and effort on in front of, and sometimes literally in the hands of, your intended audience. These are just some of the things covered in today's valuable and personal episode with guest Malcolm Ingram - an acclaimed and decorated filmmaker and documentarian, as well as an ambassador of the now resurgent desire for physical media. Leveraging all these things, Ingram felt a personal pull to, most recently, start his own distribution company with a focus on this physical media Mercantile Instinct. And his first release is the film CLERK (yes, a look at the man and the stories behind the hit CLERKS). CLERK will feature both Blu-Ray as well as VHS and Blu-Ray - with wide release on September 26th. Jacke talks to legendary independent filmmaker John Sayles (Lone Star, Passion Fish) about his new novel Jamie MacGillivray: The Renegade's Journey, which tells a sweeping story of romance and revolution in eighteenth century Scotland and the New World. "Film director and novelist Sayles (Yellow Earth) follows in this strong outing the parallel stories of a Scottish rebel and a young Scottish woman pressed into servitude and sent to the Caribbean... he has a knack for bringing his many characters to life, and he makes palpable the raw violence of war and the uncompromising inequality of the period. It's a worthy epic." -- Publishers Weekly John Sayles is an American independent film director, screenwriter, actor, and novelist. He has twice been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, for Passion Fish (1992) and Lone Star (1996). He has written seven novels, the most recent being Yellow Earth (2020) and A Moment in the Sun (2011). Help support the show at patreon.com/literature or historyofliterature.com/donate.
