We trade different markets, but we both share the same philosophy, and it's going to help you massively. Andrew Mitchem Let's get into that more right now. My trading chat with Diana Perkins. Andrew Mitchem Hey traders, Andrew here at The Forex Trading Coach with video and podcast number 608. For 40 minutes you're going to get absolute gold with my interview with Diana Perkins. Let's start straight away. Everybody, it's Andrew Mitchem here at The Forex Trading Coach. Absolutely thrilled today to be joined by Diana Perkins from Trading with Diana. Welcome along, Diana. Nice to see you so much. Diana Perkins, CPA And thank you for having me. Andrew & Diana trade different markets but share a common philosophy. Andrew Mitchem Awesome. Well, look, we got put together because I think someone thought that we would have a great education and insight to help people, because although we do slightly different things, I think our philosophy of trading and helping people is something that will align really well for people watching and listening to this. So maybe first of all, Diana, if you could introduce yourself, who you are and what you do. Diana Perkins, CPA Absolutely, and I agree with the person who connected us. I'm really excited for this conversation. So, Diana Perkins, I'm the founder of Trading with Diana, which is an educational platform where I teach everyday people how to trade the market with confidence. I do this through workshops, personalized coaching, and newsletters, and it's honestly the best part of my day. I spent a good part of my career trading and mentoring and coaching others in the space, and recently launched my own business so I can do this full time. Andrew Mitchem Awesome, awesome. So, when you coach people, what kind of markets do you generally look at? What do you help them with? Diana Perkins, CPA Yeah, it's typically the US equity market and we're focused on stocks, ETFs, you know, some index funds and, for a small subset—although it's growing—options trading, which I don't normally market. But I did used to be a professional options trader. I love it. There's so much that you can do with stock options. So focus in those areas. But it's really all market conditions, which brings up—I actually just spoke with a trader this morning about that—just looking almost, you know, the last nine months in review, but all different market conditions across all different sectors. It's really a flexible approach. And you'll hear me say that investing, it's very individual. Andrew Mitchem You know, I was reading your background about how you started when you were young with charging—I think it was the inter...

How the U.S. Supreme Court Is Drastically Reshaping American Democracy

Democracy Decoded

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 25, 2025 42:42

The U.S. Supreme Court has vastly reshaped American democracy — rolling back voting rights, enabling secret money in politics and expanding presidential power. These decisions have a real impact on all Americans by making it harder for citizens to exercise their freedom to vote, easier for wealthy interests to sway elections and more difficult to hold leaders accountable. In this episode, host Simone Leeper speaks with law professor and co-host of the Strict Scrutiny Podcast Leah Litman, Campaign Legal Center Senior Vice President Bruce V. Spiva and Campaign Legal Center Campaign Finance Senior Counsel David Kolker. Together, they unpack the real-world impact of landmark Supreme Court decisions — from voting rights cases like Shelby County v. Holder and Brnovich v. DNC to campaign finance rulings like Citizens United — and explore what reforms could restore balance, accountability and trust in the Court.Timestamps:(00:05) — What do Americans really think about the Supreme Court?(02:18) — Why does the Supreme Court's power matter for democracy?(07:01) — How did Shelby County v. Holder weaken voting rights?(16:39) — What was the impact of Brnovich v. DNC?(23:39) — How has the Supreme Court reshaped campaign finance?(29:24) — Why did Citizens United open the floodgates for money in politics?(32:37) — How have super PACs changed elections?(34:02) — How have wealthy special interests reshaped U.S. elections?(35:44) — What does presidential immunity mean for accountability?(37:30) — How do lifetime seats protect the Supreme Court from accountability?(39:22) — What role can Congress play in restoring trust and democracy?Host and Guests:Simone Leeper litigates a wide range of redistricting-related cases at Campaign Legal Center, challenging gerrymanders and advocating for election systems that guarantee all voters an equal opportunity to influence our democracy. Prior to arriving at CLC, Simone was a law clerk in the office of Senator Ed Markey and at the Library of Congress, Office of General Counsel. She received her J.D. cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center in 2019 and a bachelor's degree in political science from Columbia University in 2016.Leah Litman is a professor of law at the University of Michigan and a former Supreme Court clerk. He is an attorney and community leader who has spent his over 30-year career fighting for civil rights and civil liberties, voting rights, consumer protection, and antitrust enforcement.Over the past three decades, he has tried cases and argued appeals in courtrooms across the country, including arguing against vote suppression in the United States Supreme Court in 2021. In 2022, in his first run for public office, Bruce mounted a competitive run in the primary election for Washington, D.C. Attorney General. In addition to founding his own law firm where he practiced for eleven years, Bruce has held several leadership and management positions as a partner at two national law firms. Most recently, Bruce served as the Managing Partner of the D.C. Office and on the firm-wide Executive Committee of Perkins Coie LLP, where he also had an active election law practice. He first-chaired twelve voting rights and redistricting trials across the country, and argued numerous voting rights appeals in U.S. circuit courts and state supreme courts during his tenure at Perkins. David Kolker is Campaign Finance Senior Counsel at Campaign Legal Center. He focuses on both short- and long-term strategies to improve campaign finance laws across the country, and precedent interpreting those laws. David has spent decades litigating cases in both the public and private sectors. He worked for nearly 20 years at the Federal Election Commission, where he litigated cases on federal campaign finance law and for several years led the agency's Litigation Division. He represented the government in dozens of oral arguments, including the government's defense in SpeechNow.org v. FEC before the D.C. Circuit sitting en banc. He litigated many cases decided by the Supreme Court, including the landmark cases of McConnell v. FEC and Citizens United v. FEC. David joined CLC from the Federal Communications Commission, where he served as the deputy bureau chief, Enforcement Bureau. He previously was a partner at the law firm Spiegel and McDiarmid in Washington. Early in his career, David worked as a trial attorney in the Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice. Links:The Supreme Court Needs to Start Standing Up for Democracy – CLCThe Supreme Court's Role in Undermining American Democracy  – CLCSupreme Court's Impact on Voting Rights Is a Threat to Democracy  – CLCWhy the Current U.S. Supreme Court Is a Threat to Our Democracy  – CLCU.S. Supreme Court Reinstates Illegal Virginia Voter Purge at the Eleventh Hour – CLCWhat Does the U.S. Supreme Court's Recent Arizona Decision Mean for Voters? – CLCAlito Flags the Fatal Flaw of the Supreme Court Ethics Code – CLCU.S. Supreme Court Reinstates Illegal Virginia Voter Purge at the Eleventh Hour – CLCImproving Ethics Standards at the Supreme Court – CLCSupreme Court tossed out heart of Voting Rights Act a decade ago, prompting wave of new voting rules – The HillU.S. Supreme Court Significantly Limits Restraints on Unconstitutional Presidential Actions – CLCCampaign Legal Center Responds to SCOTUS Ruling Limiting Court Restraints on Unconstitutional Presidential Actions – CLCProtecting the Promise of American Citizenship – CLCBringing the Fight for Fair Voting Maps to the U.S. Supreme Court – CLCThe Supreme Court Must Uphold Fair Voting Maps for Fair Representation – CLCAbout CLC:Democracy Decoded is a production of Campaign Legal Center, a nonpartisan nonprofit organization dedicated to solving the wide range of challenges facing American democracy. Spring Flower: A Journey Through Generational Trauma, War, and Hope with Dr. Richard Perkins-HsungEpisode Description:In this profoundly moving episode of Linda's Corner: Inspiration for a Better Life, we sit down with Dr. Richard Perkins-Hsung—university professor, son of immigrants, and the devoted compiler of his late mother Jean's extraordinary memoir, Spring Flower. Together, we explore the deep impact of the immigrant experience and generational trauma, as seen through the lens of Jean's powerful life story.Jean was born into extreme poverty in China, where girls were considered worthless, and female infants were often abandoned. Her own mother endured the ancient, brutal custom of foot binding, breaking and reshaping feet to meet cultural ideals. As an infant, Jean survived one of the deadliest natural disasters of the 20th century when the Yangtze River flooded, killing millions through drowning, famine, and disease.Miraculously, Jean was adopted by compassionate American missionaries who devoted their lives to serving the Chinese people. From there, Jean's journey would span Japanese occupation during World War II, a fateful encounter with Mahatma Gandhi, the terror of the Communist Revolution, and a dramatic escape to the United States—all while leaving behind a husband and daughter.Through Jean's story, we see history come alive—her resilience, sacrifice, and determination shaped not only her son Richard's childhood but also the generational narrative passed down through trauma and healing. In this episode, you'll hear about:The devastating culture of gender inequality in early 20th-century ChinaJean's survival through the Yangtze River flood and WWIIHer inspiring American missionary adoptive parents and their humanitarian workLife under Mao's Communist Revolution and the personal cost of political upheavalJean's heartbreaking separation from her husband and daughterRichard's journey as an immigrant boy in America and how his mother's legacy shaped himThe importance of understanding ancestral stories to find personal healing and identityThe creation of Spring Flower, Jean's posthumous memoir, honoring her voice and lifeDr. Richard Perkins-Hsung offers deep insights into how historical trauma becomes generational, and how retelling these stories with compassion can become a tool for healing.Connect with Dr. Richard Perkins-Hsung:

Kimberly shares how DEI was often treated as a branding campaign rather than systemic change, why psychological safety is inseparable from operational safety, and how silence in the cockpit or boardroom leads to risk. She explains why inclusion should be embedded into pilot training as a required competency, why emotional intelligence belongs alongside technical skill, and how leaders can shift from “I-frame” individual fixes to “S-frame” system solutions. They discuss how DEI rollbacks reveal which organizations were truly committed, why allyship must extend to all—including men in positions of power—and the fatigue marginalized groups feel carrying the burden of proof. Kimberly closes with practical “micro-allyship” actions and advice for young women in aviation: don't conform or gaslight, strive to be an ally, and use small, consistent acts of inclusion to reshape the system itself. This episode contains sensitive topics, including addiction and pornography. Listener discretion is advised.Chaos often feels like it's pulling us in a thousand directions. But what if, at its core, it was actually a master class — an invitation to learn discernment and return to our inner truth? In this week's episode of A Psychic's Story, spiritual teacher and content creator Taylor Perkins joins Nichole to share his personal journey of awakening and the lessons he's learned about navigating illusion and reclaiming power.Taylor opens up about growing up in a strict religious household and the cognitive dissonance that shaped his early years. He recounts the powerful moment as a teenager when he felt consumed by divine love — a turning point that awakened him to the reality that Source energy has always been within.Taylor and Nichole also explore:Reality as a mirror — how our beliefs, energy, and patterns reflect back to us in the physical world.Chaos as curriculum — why contrast and confusion are essential for spiritual evolution and why discernment matters more now than ever.Breaking loops — understanding repetitive patterns in our lives and how to shift them with awareness and compassion.Expansion over perfection — why striving for flawlessness keeps us stuck, and how embracing expansion allows for real freedom and growth.Integration — remembering that the answers aren't outside of us. The spiritual path is about self-sourcing truth and reclaiming sovereignty.Taylor's message is that discernment is not just a skill — it's a way of remembering who you truly are in the middle of a chaotic world. You can reach Taylor by following him on Instagram @iamtaylorperkins or on TikTok @mrcultdaddyIf you or someone you love is struggling with addiction, know you're not alone. Judge Dwight D. Moore's “Probation” — Now a Baby Is Dead? | The Emmanuel Haro Case True Crimers—this one is hard. Tonight we break down the rapid-fire timeline in the Emmanuel Haro case and ask the question no one wants to confront: how did a man with a documented history of horrific child abuse end up with probation—and how did we get from there to a deceased infant and murder charges for both parents? Host Jake walks through the week-by-week chronology: the Aug. 14 “parking-lot attack” and fake abduction story; early inconsistencies flagged by investigators; search warrants at the Haro home; Aug. 22 arrests; the big press conference and a contested narrative about a supposed jailhouse admission; and the Sept. 4 arraignment with not-guilty pleas and a Sept. 17 preliminary hearing on the calendar. We unpack the jurisdiction tangle (San Bernardino vs. Riverside), why venue matters, and how prosecutors can still hold a defendant on a probation violation while they build the homicide case. We also put a spotlight on the 2018 infant-abuse case that ended in a 2023 probation outcome under visiting Judge Dwight D. Moore—after a plea to child cruelty and a suspended prison term. What does “suspended” actually mean? Why do some judges accept these pleas? And how does a later violation revive that time, stackable with any new sentence? Legal analysis dives into the debated “Perkins operation”—the undercover-cellmate tactic that's legal under Illinois v. Perkins—and what counts as a “confession” vs. a statement. We explore the charging posture against Rebecca Haro (murder vs. potential accessory after the fact), how digital evidence, forensic interviews with other children, and blood evidence could reshape the case, and why the death penalty is off the table in practice in California (gubernatorial moratorium), even if it exists in statute. Bottom line: Justice is slow, but it moves. This episode is fact-driven, emotionally grounded, and focused on accountability without graphic language. Critical Role isn't using Daggerheart for Campaign 4! There are a lot of good business reasons for that, but there's still an element of poor planning there that's hard to overlook. WotC's new Unearthed Arcana is an air raid siren telling us that they're planning a Dark Sun release, likely in 2026. This is a huge change from perceived sentiments a couple of years ago that the setting was "too problematic" to get a 5E conversion. Creativity doesn't come easy. It is often an act of resistance against chaos and other de-personalizing forces. In this episode, author Mitali Perkins joins Mark Labberton to discuss her latest book Just Making: A Guide for Compassionate Creatives. Known for her acclaimed novels for young readers—including You Bring the Distant Near and Rickshaw Girl—Perkins reflects on the creative life as both a gift and a struggle, marked by tenderness and tenacity. With candour about rejection, moments of mortification, and the relentless call to keep making, Perkins offers encouragement for artists who want their work to be both beautiful and just. Episode Highlights “I was very, very close myself to giving up on the creative life.” “Any time we're bringing order from chaos, there's going to be pushback—and it's diabolical pushback.” “Stories widened my heart, they widened my mind, they gave me a sense of calling that I was not just here for myself.” “We can't put on our faith like lace and bows; it has to be in the bones of the story.” “When I feel that embarrassment, that mortification, if I can just stay and do something physical to honour my work, goodness comes pouring back.” “To not write it, after hearing your passion to combat this foe of our age, would be exactly what the diabolical enemy wants us to do.” Helpful Links and Resources Just Making: A Guide for Compassionate Creatives by Mitali Perkins *You Bring the Distant Near* by Mitali Perkins (National Book Award finalist) Rickshaw Girl (adapted into a film) *Steeped in Stories: Timeless Children's Novels to Refresh Our Tired Souls* by Mitali Perkins The Dangerous Act of Worship by Mark Labberton Kiva Microloans About Mitali Perkins Mitali Perkins writes novels for young readers that cross borders and break down walls. She speaks widely at schools, libraries, and conferences. More at mitaliperkins.com. Show Notes Perkins describes the heart of Just Making as born from nearly giving up on the creative life during the pandemic. Creativity, tenderness, and tenacity “I was very, very close myself to giving up on the creative life.” Just Making: a survival guide for writers and artists facing rejection, discouragement, and the sense that their work doesn't matter The struggles of the creative life Perkins speaks candidly about rejection, failed manuscripts, and the long twelve-year gap between her first and second published books. “You end up looking at the exterior packaging—my career looks amazing on social media—but inside it's pride, vainglory, rejections, bad reviews.” Practices such as finding “third spaces” and championing one's own work sustain her through rejection. Childhood, immigration, and storytelling Born in Kolkata, India, Perkins immigrated to New York at age seven. She calls herself a “feral reader,” devouring fourteen hundred novels in four years as a child “Stories widened my heart, they widened my mind, they gave me a sense of calling that I was not just here for myself.” Obstacles and motivation during her upbringing as the daughter of refugees Encountering faith through story Growing up in a Hindu home and finding coming to Christ in college Through reading the Gospels and C.S. Lewis, she encountered Jesus as “the true story behind all the stories.” Conversion and baptism while a student at Stanford Writing, justice, and flourishing “We can't put on our faith like lace and bows; it has to be in the bones of the story.” Fiction that tackles themes of poverty, gender, courage, and flourishing Justice is defined not only as righting wrongs but fostering shalom—wholeness and human flourishing. Publishing industry and perseverance Perkins recounts the twelve-year struggle to publish her second book, revising manuscripts dozens of times. “It was twelve years between my first book and my second book.” Tenacity grounded in prayer and a sense of God's invitation: “I've got the heavy yoke; will you walk with me?” Moments of humiliation Perkins shares a public humiliation at a book signing where no one lined up for her book. Choosing not to leave, she pulled out her manuscript and began editing “When I feel that embarrassment, that mortification, if I can just stay and do something physical to honor my work, goodness comes pouring back.” How Rickshaw Girl was published and adapted into a film Coaching for creatives Perkins counsels Mark Labberton on his unfinished book about fear “To not write it, after hearing your passion to combat this foe of our age, would be exactly what the diabolical enemy wants us to do.” How to embrace imperfection and see writing as part of a larger communal conversation Community and the impact of children's literature Direct engagement with children in classrooms and libraries How young readers form friendships with her characters and are inspired toward justice How books like Rickshaw Girl and her forthcoming The Golden Necklace connect global justice issues with young readers' imaginations Production Credits Conversing is produced and distributed in partnership with Comment magazine and Fuller Seminary.

Today, Americans are facing an affordability crisis. We're here after years of union busting, lax antitrust enforcement and corporate takeover of our democracy and now, fascism and oligarchy reigning over our society. So this Labor Day, I want to tell you about a woman whose courage, vision, and persistence transformed America and the American workplace: a woman who truly knew the meaning of affording your life, Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins. When President Franklin Roosevelt appointed her in 1933, Perkins became the first woman in U.S. history to serve in the Cabinet. But she was more than a symbol—she was a reformer, a fighter, and the architect of many of the protections we now take for granted. She came into office at the height of the Great Depression, when millions of Americans were out of work, when wages were low, hours were long, and protections were almost nonexistent. Frances Perkins had already seen the consequences of unsafe working conditions firsthand. As a young woman, she had watched the flames of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in 1911, when 146 garment workers—mostly immigrant women—died because they were locked inside a burning building. That tragedy seared into her the determination to make workers' lives safer, fairer, and more dignified. As Secretary of Labor, Perkins set out an ambitious agenda—and she achieved it. She helped design and implement the Social Security Act of 1935, which for the first time gave Americans a system of old-age pensions, unemployment insurance, and aid to families in need. She championed the Fair Labor Standards Act, which established the minimum wage, the 40-hour work week, and restrictions on child labor. She was instrumental in creating the Civilian Conservation Corps and Public Works Administration, which gave jobs to millions. Her guiding principle was simple but powerful: that the government has a responsibility to protect workers from exploitation and to ensure that prosperity is shared, not hoarded.Frances Perkins knew these reforms would not come easily. She faced resistance not only from business interests but also from members of Congress and even some within the Roosevelt administration. Yet she persisted. With intelligence, patience, and moral conviction, she turned ideas that seemed radical into law.Her legacy lives with us every day. When you receive a paycheck that honors overtime pay, when you see a child in school instead of working in a factory, when you know that your retirement is backed by Social Security—those are the reforms of Frances Perkins. She once said, “The people are what matter to government, and a government should aim to give all the people under its jurisdiction the best possible life.”This Labor Day, remember Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins, a true Affording Your Life visionary.
